control and the track pad, but i believe you can just do control

Re: Right clicking links on a web page?

what would be a good compromise as it works well with the save as
features is if when clicking the link safari would prompt you as to
where you want to save it. Then after the first file it changes the
default to the folder you used in your last save as. probably
wouldn't be too hard to do for them. take care, max

I really don't like comparing Apples and Oranges here but at least
this can be done in FireFox in my windows VM and that's what I've
had to resort to several times just because Safari and VO don't play

How about using TextEdit in plain text mode (select Make Plain Text

Another option (not free, but fairly cheap from the Apps Store) would
be Smultron:

You've also got vim and emacs in your Terminal.

What is so frustrating about this is that the mobile site was so

Adobe discontinues mobile Flash Player

Sylvie Barak

11/9/2011 3:51 PM EST

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Adobe Systems Inc. announced Wednesday
(Nov. 9) it will restructure its operations, a move which will
result in layoffs for some 750 employees and the discontinuation
of Flash Player for mobile devices. The upcoming release of
Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook will be
the last update to the software.

In a shocking 180-degree twist, Adobe said in a blog post it
would no longer be working to adapt Flash Player for mobile to
new browsers, OS versions or different device configurations,
and that it would instead focus on building applications for
mobile and investment in HTML5 - long considered a rival standard.

“HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in
some cases exclusively,” wrote Danny Winokur, vice president and
GM of Adobe’s interactive development team, adding that this now
made HTML5 superior in terms of creating and deploying content
in the browser across mobile platforms.

“We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key
players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple,
Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to
advance their mobile browsers,” he added.

Winokur said Adobe would now urge developers to continue
packaging native apps with Adobe AIR instead.

“The announcement to no longer develop Flash Players for mobile
devices is an admission by Adobe not so much about the
superiority of HTML5, but more about HTML5 momentum and the
incredible amount of resources it takes Adobe to maintain the
Flash player for so many different chips sets and mobile OSes
that change generations two to three times per year,” said
analyst Jack Gold of Gold Associates.

Indeed, in the mobile space where OS versions and chips change
so quickly, Gold says Flash for mobile has been a “resource
nightmare” for Adobe. “We could have seen this coming,” he added.

The war of words over whether Flash was right for mobile has
been raging for years now, with Steve Jobs and the Apple Inc.
camp firmly

story. lol that was my one real question how would seri and voiceover
get along. now that I've heard this, i won't fight it if one of my
family wants to give me one for christmas. take care, max

Hi Guys.
I could not resist telling you guys this story told to me by a blind
friend of mine. He was laughing so much about this, that he just had
to call me up and tell me all about it. This will just go to show
you just how much we have come forward with accessibility, thanks to
Steve and all his folks.

This friend was having difficulty with his old phone, and he was
thinking about getting an iPhone. I think he eventually will when
his current contract runs out in a few months. He thought it was
time because he thought his current phone was dead. He asked the
salesman at Sprint to show him the new Siri iPhone. The man, with
all the confidence of someone who thought he knew what he was doing
blurted out: I don't think it will work for a blind person. It's
got a flat screen.

After making this incredibly uninformed statement, he handed the
iPhone to my friend at his request. Luckily, he had some experience
with iPhones from his sighted iPhone using friends; he's never seen
mine. He said to the guy: just let me show you something here.

Luckily they were so uninformed that they hadn't messed with the
defaults on the Siri iPhone. So, my friend pressed the home key
three times, and when it came up he said into it: show me the
weather in Miami, Florida. It did, and VoiceOver started reading
it. The salesman, pretty much in shock, said: I will never say a
thing like that again. That shows me.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: Apple is Awsome wasFor sale: iPhone 4

2011-10-21 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
this happened to me on my macbook a few months back. I took it in to
have the keyboard repaired. Its over three years old. I expected to
have to pay for it or at least pay a minimum charge. Not only was it
free, they replaced the liaminent making the computer look like a
brand new unit on the outside. And my brother, who was one of the
first iphone users under a t t said he had them replace his three or
four times no questions asked. good luck to you, max

I would definitely take it in to the apple store if you have one
near by. I have just had my iPhone 4 replaced at no charge. I do
not have Apple care either. I had dropped my phone on concrete and
the screen was completely shattered. The Apple rep said that it
would normally be $179 to replace the phone but as I had not had any
physical damage to the phone previously they would cover it under
the normal 12 meh warrantee. I have heard on some of the tech
podcasts that apple have a semi unofficial :we're Awsome policy.
Supposedly one of the criteria is that you don't lie to them. You
just bring in the phone or whatever and tell them exactly what
happened cause they'll know anyway. I guess this is more relevant
with things like water damage then it is for dropping. There would
be other criteria as well of course but I have heard lots of stories
from friends etc about how Apple have gone above and beyond what
they would have to. This has been with things like mine which were
obviously user damage. With something like an ear piece not working
properly, I would be extremely surprised if it cost you anything at
all to get fixed. You would probably find that they would just take
your old phone and go e you a new one. You could then look at
selling the new iPhone 4 on eBay and using the money on a new iPhone
4S. I am just waiting to see how much the new iPhones are going to
be on my works staff plan before deciding what to do.

yes, but the seri feature is only available if you have internet

Re: iPhone 4s and Siri

2011-10-05 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
my brother has tried to ease my worries about the data usage by
reminding me that the iphone is very good at switching from your
cellular network to wifi when one is available. I'm still concerned.

On Oct 5, 2011, at 2:26 PM, Chris Blouch wrote:

Interesting. So it's like the Dragon iOS approach where they encode
an audio snippet, send it off and the real work is done on some
cloud processor? So what was all the claims about using the new A5
chip and being 4S only because of compute requirements? Maybe it's
just compute intensive to quickly encode the audio snippet.

That said, spoken word audio is pretty small. 64 or 128kbs is only 8
or 16 K per second. A typical command is probably only 5 seconds or
80K at the higher data rate. So just 1MB would handle about 12
transactions. So a 200MB a month plan would handle some 2500 Siri
commands. Twice that or more if they are able to compress 64kpbs or
lower and/or if the commands are less than 5 seconds.

All that said, there is a brewing storm over mobile data caps
because all the new cloud, sync, mobile innovation is going to hit a
wall soon. While I got grandfathered in on an unlimited plan for my
iPhone, my wife has the paltry 200MB plan on hers and we've already
been dinged once for $15 when she went over. Caps on home cable/dsl
plans are much more liberal but today's expansive pipe is tomorrow's
soda straw. It's a cycle that's happened a dozen times or so and I
do recall the days when 300 baud modems were 'fast' and who would
need anything faster? Then it was 1200, then 2400, then 9600, then
14.4, then 28.8 then 56kpb then 128, 256, 512, 1Mbps and today it's
multiple Mbps. Difference is that back then when you bought a
256kbps DSL connection it was expected that you could use it all you
want. Today you can get 25Mbps or higher but there is a cap. What
good will new faster 4G networks be when you can consume your entire
plan allotment in a day? This will start to get ugly soon.

BTW, I love the bit where it says the audio captcha is to test whether

There are 2 things I can think of to try. First try control
clicking and try quick look after which you might be able to save it
out as whatever you want. Another option is to try control clicking
and then open with. When opening these files with TextEdit, there
may be jibberish at the top and bottom of the page that you might
have to erase out. Hope this helps and maybe others have ideas too.

Also, I've seen several mentions of using web kit. What is it? Is
it a plug in for Safari or a separate web browser. How do I know if
I already have it? When my kids want to put a youTube video in full

mac user needs help with his website

2011-03-13 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hello group; I know this is somewhat off topic, but I'm hoping the
mac users who operate their own websites will help me out where other
lists have failed me. I'm wanting to create a rotating banner for my
website to show one advertisement each time a page loads or is
refreshed. I'm hoping for free and very simple. I understand that it
will probably involve modifying a java or php script. I'm ok with
putting my data in someone else's form, but that's the limit of my
skills. No money in the budget for a webmaster and still have trust
issues even if it wasn't a matter of money. but I will give one of
the spaces in the rotation to whomever can help me solve this
problem. My site is www.midwaymarketplace.com if you want to check
out the site or its rankings. I really hope someone here can help
me. I'm hoping that if I put some sample ads up or a this space for
sale here i might be able to generate enough income to start doing
some other things like conferences, trade shows, or advertising
myself. Thanks in advance for any help. and i hope the moderator
will excuse me. If you have to put me on monitored or something,
that's fine; but i didn't know who else to ask. take care, Max

Re: The inaccessibility of Flash with VO

2011-03-05 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hello; ON my site i sell people's amusement equipment. Given
differences in bandwidth and internet speed outside the u s, many will
send me you tube videos. I have taken to stripping the video and
converting it to mp4 so that it can be viewed on all the i devices.
My brother gives me grief because he thinks i should just embed the
youtube video. Problem is when i do that using my mac i lose the
audio. and trust me no ride is better without the music and screaming
or laughing customers in the background. a shame we have to have the
problems with flash, but even if it goes away; it will go away very
slowly. take care, Max

On Mar 5, 2011, at 3:23 PM, Mike Arrigo wrote:

Thi depends on what sites you need to use. I use youtube, and though

flash content, and at this point, using windows is the only option.
Let's hope that html 5 catches on, if it does, flash will hopefully
be replaced with it.

On Mar 5, 2011, at 2:49 PM, Eric Brinkman wrote:

how big of a problem people find the lack of Flash support with VO to

unlabeled buttons in Flash players to be annoying with Jaws. But
there is so much flash content on the web that total inaccessibility
on the Mac almost seems like a serious limitation. Should I consider
putting Windows on my Mac just to have Flash support with a
screen-reader? How do others feel about the flash inaccessibility?

believe it to be completely free and in order. If you go to
http://www.keepvid.com, you will find that you can enter the URL of
the YouTube video in the edit box and press the download button. A
page will then appear that includes the name of the video and
various formats in which to download it. MP4 is among the formats
available. These videos can be successfully tagged and imported into
iTunes (or vice versa). This bypasses the potentially arduous
process of obtaining the video and then converting it. As far as I
can remember, very little fiddling is required, if any. I hope this
provides additional options for the download of YouTube videos.

solve my safari instability problem

Hi list; for the last few days my computer has been acting very weird
opening webpage links that i didn't click having the cursor bounce
around while entering text. I thought it was the most recent software
updates, but there really wasn't anything in there to cause the
problems i was having. when speaking to my brother this morning he
diagnosed my problem. it was a bad keyboard. We verified this by
hooking up an external keyboard to it. he says it might be cured by a
good cleaning, so I was wondering how you would do that. he told me
he'd use a vacume with the small brush attachment. he says if that
doesn't fix it, then he'll replace the keyboard for me. well, its so
nice to have a cooperative macbook again. take care, max

off topic kindle question

bought be the latest version of the kindle. I've been doing some
reading, and I'm starting to get encouraged. It has a query keyboard
and the website says it has text to speech and spoken navigation. You
have to get a sighted person to turn it on, but it says it has it. I
have it charging right now and am looking forward to trying it. I
hope it does work as it has a browser in addition to the kindle
features. who knows this puppy may eventually replace my laptop.
doubt it, but it would be cool if it did. will let you know what
happens. take care, Max

Ok you can remove items from the rooter to leave the ones you want!
Open vo utility vo+f8 and interact with the categories table and
arrow to the web heading!

stop interacting and scroll until rooter includes menu button!
vo+space on that and you can check or uncheck items you do or do not
want!

1. When I open mail, it tells me 1 row added or 5 rows added over
and over until all my mail is downloaded. Please tell me I can
turn that off!

2. Is there a key sequence I can use to add let's say one address
from an email to my addressbook? For example, if I want to add
macvisionaries, but not the sender from whom the message appears,
how do I do that? My husband took the mouse and put it on the to
field, which was macvisionar...@gmail.com and then he clicked the
triangle to the right which brought up a menu o choices which
included copy address and add to addressbook. How do I do that
using vo?

3. I'm reading a message and decide to keep it, but I don't want to
move it; I want to leave it in my inbox for now. How do I close it
and be returned to my inbox list of messages? Right now I do cmd-w
then cmd-1 to reopen the inbox; I have to believe there is a better
way!

4. I've read the message and from within it, I press backspace to
delete it. This takes me back to my list of messages in the inbox,
but I hear all this verbiage about inbox table one row selected
before I hear from whom the next message was sent or its subject.
Can I make that stop?

5. I am desperate for help in fining attachments; vo tells me there
is one, but I can't seem to find it. I've done all sorts of
itterations of turning long headers on, interacting with toolbar,
interacting with message text, and the list goes on! It just
escapes me!

6. I know what the attachment is and decide to save it. I go to
file and save attachment and when the filename dialogue box comes
up, it doesn't read the name of the file. Is there a way to hear
that?

Ok, those are my questions and I know they are many and basic.
However, I would be so grateful for any insight people can give me.

anywhere (I'm running all up-to-date Snow Leopard and apps); where
might it be? The computer gets a bit warm when it's trying to run
with the lid shut...

hello; the process of sleep on a mac is much different than with a
windows computer. it takes literally only seconds to be back to full

new real player and converter

2010-08-28 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hello group; Has anyone else tried the new versin of real player for
the mac? I recently had some problems with my old version, so i
removed it and downloaded the newest one. with that you also get a
program called real converter. I was disapointed because it wouldn't
let me convert from og to mp3, but something it does claim to do that
you all might be interested in is converting videos from youtube and
other online sites like youtube to regular video or even just audio.
don't know if it works because I don't have any youtube files to play
with, but thought I'd mention it since I've heard some discussion
about this problem on the list. I'm sure it does a lot more. let me
know. thanks, max

Jaws is more or less the standard in terms of you'll run in to

Window-eyes is another great option. I haven't used it but many

What I would do if I were you is take that Mac, set yourself up a

Read the
manual / ask questions and you should be able to bootstrap
yourself. You
may need help creating the VM for Windows I had a help desk not
sure your

situation although there is a podcast that details this process.
I like Jaws myself but I have heard Window-eyes can be more
stable and
leaner on resources. Costs differ, JFW is probably the most
expensive.
Window-eyes comes with an option where you can pay for the
software in

installments which is a fantastic feature on a budget.

Hope that helps.

I realise the question might sound strange and even off-topic,
but I really
want to hear this advice from fellow Mac and VO Users. When I
last used
Windows I was able to get by with a screen magnifier and didn't

already
moved to the Mac full time so VO was the natural choice. Now I'm
being
required to start using Windows again, along with Office 2007 and
Internet

invest my
time and money to learn, or if one of them is more like VO than
the others.

I will be running either XP or Windows 7 under Fusion.

Please send your replies directly to me off-list as this probably
isn't a
thread

Jaws is more or less the standard in terms of you'll run in to
that more

than others.

Window-eyes is another great option. I haven't used it but
many many people

think very highly of it.

What I would do if I were you is take that Mac, set yourself up
a virtual
machine and try the demo copies of all the options you listed.
Read the
manual / ask questions and you should be able to bootstrap
yourself. You
may need help creating the VM for Windows I had a help desk not
sure your

situation although there is a podcast that details this process.
I like Jaws myself but I have heard Window-eyes can be more
stable and
leaner on resources. Costs differ, JFW is probably the most
expensive.
Window-eyes comes with an option where you can pay for the
software in

installments which is a fantastic feature on a budget.

Hope that helps.

I realise the question might sound strange and even off-topic,
but I really
want to hear this advice from fellow Mac and VO Users. When I

Windows I was able to get by with a screen magnifier and didn't

2010-08-16 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
hello; how is your email displayed? I'm asking because I can't get
the go to top or go to end working either. I like to keep my active
emails in my inbox, so sometimes i have over a hundred messages in
there. so, what i do sometimes is when in the list press a letter
like a for the top or w for the bottom. this isn't perfect, but often
it will get me close enough to where i want to be to save a lot of
time. another thing i like to do before checking mail is to note the
name of the sender for the last message in the list so i can enter
those characters to get back there. Of course, sometimes i have more
than one email from the same contact and have to do it several times.
Hope this helps until you can work out the preferred way to do it.
thanks and take care, max

From the finder I point to mail.app and press command+o -- among
other things vo says that I'm in my in-box and row 582 of 3,832 has
keyboard focus. The up and down arrow keys appear to traverse my
folders so I tab into the in-box. VO reads the header of an old
message and again announces my position in the table. I then press
VO+end and move up four messages to 586/3832. If I attempt to
interact, VO says interact with text and VO+end has no discernible
affect on the focus. I tried all this before posting, but should
have said so
The one thing I had not tried was kevin's suggestion. When I press
VO+shift+J followed by VO+downArrow it moves me up four more to 590,
which is still a long long way from the bottom.

Besides cleaning up the clutter in my in-box and defining a few
filters, any/all suggestions would be appreciated since I am stuck
on what seems like it should be a simple problem.

Press VO-Shift-J to start the jump. Then, press VO-down arrow.

an alternative (and much cheaper one) you could download
iTreadmill for your iPhone. Personally I like the Nike+ system
better as I do not need to keep the phone in my pocket or even
touch it once I have started my workout. Depending on what
workout you choose, the coach gives you regular feedback on your
progress.

Out of interest, which treadmill did you get? I have got the York
T302 which enables me to use the built in speakers for the iPhone
and the buttons are easy to feel and remember. Each press of the
speed + or - buttons increases or decreases by 0.2 km, so its easy
to work out how many presses I will need to hit a good walking
pace of 6 km per an hour. Prior to the Nike+ I used the built in
timer on the iPhone so I knew how long I had been walking for,
well that was if I was not using the phone to play music or
podcasts.

Very easy to use, I like the calorie target mode. You get
regular prompted updates to tell you how you are doing and if
you are getting close to your target. This saves you having to
look/press the screen to find out what is going on. You then
get a summary of everything at the end of your workout.

So far I am very happy with my purchases.

Nice thought, but it didn't show up in the list of running apps.

Hi,

Try hitting command option escape, that will bring you to the apps
that are open. It will force which ever one you want to quit. See
if Dropbox is listed there. That is what I tried to do.

Hi:
I can't uninstall it b/c the window is open, which I cannot see to
close. Hmm.

Hi all,

I installed Dropbox, but it took a while. This window was
problematic for me as well. I had to reinstall it and just kept
hitting tab. For some reason, VO doesn't recognize it till you
hit tab. I hope that helps. I have Dropbox running, and managed
to install it without sighted assistance. But this window is
tricky.

I'd suggest reinstallign the app totally so you can see the
message in the install box. You cannot see this window as it is
not accessibal with vo. I've contacted supp...@dropbox.com over
and over again with no results and no responce that they will
look in to it.

Take care.

Hi guys:
Someone sighted says there is a welcome to drop box screen on
my MBP, and it is asking for user name, password. However, I
cannot get vo to navigate to that window. What am I supposed to
do to access it?
