Yep, it actually happened. Guy named Trace in Lewisville, TX. Not sure
when he disappeared from the list, but he ended up rebuilding that
engine. Even he admitted that it was a pretty freakish incident,
though.

[MBZ] Well I did it again

2007-06-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
This time, I buy a 94 E420. HOLY COW what a machine. It gives a whole
new meaning to a 124. I have had quite a few 124's, even bought a 94
E320 back when it was about a year old. The E420 is WAY more powerful,
smoother, more classy. It was fully dealer maintained with full
books/records. Has 5 of the newer style wheels on it I believe from a
SLK or a 210. Also included were the set of 5 original wheels. I kind
of like the new style wheels on there. Will get some pics for those who
care. Sad part of the whole deal is that I STOLE it for less than
luther sold his SD for. I cant believe the guy sold it that cheap. I
could turn around and sell it for 8k today.

Re: [MBZ] Antique dual Petrol / Diesel engine

2007-06-21 Thread Loren Faeth
Yep The International MD tractors used the first engine in the link
as did the TD 6, TD 9 TD14 and TD 18 crawler tractors of the time.
During the 40s the TD-18 was the world's biggest crawler
tractor. Yep, the biggest Cat was not built by Caterpillar, but by IH.

The WWII Deuce and a half was dual fuel. gas, diesel or kerosene. I
think they needed gas to start. I think the army had dual fuel up
until the 70s at least.

Our original IH H (1939) was dual fuel. Started on gasoline then
ran on kerosene. At the time, kerosene was cheaper than gasoline.

There are not many truly new ideas. Mostly people who study history
find a neglected idea and recycle it. Even comedy. If you take away
the foul language, most current comedy was done by Red Skelton or the
3 stooges who stole it from Laurel and Hardy or Charlie Chaplin who
sole it from various burlesque performers who stole it from the
riverboat entertainers/minstrel shows who stole it form the court
jesters of old.

I don't think he said he paid $500. However, if you have cash on hand
and can make a decision on the spot (no let me have my mechanic check
it out, let me get back to you after I run a carfax, etc.) you can
sometimes get a spectacular deal from a seller who just wants to be
rid of the car for some reason.

I sold a VW Jetta for less than I could have simply because I wanted
it off my insurance, out of my driveway, and somebody showed up with
cash ready to pay on the spot.

Re: [MBZ] 190D status

2007-06-21 Thread Jim Cathey
More injector pump sealing. I pulled the rear plate and made a new
paper gasket for it. Then I pulled out the idle regulator and found
that its O-ring looked good, especially since I didn't have another
one! (The HF O-ring kit doesn't go that big.) I don't think it would
be too hard to replace on the car if I had to. I did dump all the oil
out of it, I don't think it's supposed to fill up like it was.
(Sitting it on its back will do that.) Finally I tipped the IP up on
its nose and removed the bottom plate that covers the cam. It has a
weird tapered wedge ring type of seal, and it was starting to look a
little tired. I believe Casey said that on the 603 motors the big oil
filter O-ring is a decent substitute. OK, but the 602, with one less
cylinder, requires a smaller seal. I took one of the big O-rings and
cut out about an inch with a razor blade, using a bias cut. I then
glued the ends together with cyanoacrylate glue. (I have heard about
this technique before, but this is the first time I have used it so
far as I can remember.) The 'new and improved' O-ring fit into place
over the 'bump' on the cover, I put the glue joint next to a mounting
screw so that it would get a good tight pinch. I eased the cover into
place and tightened down the screws. The cover tightened down all the
way, the O-ring should have gotten well wedged into its tapered seat.
We shall see if this works! I saved the old seal just in case, though
if this leaks I think I should just try to buy a new seal. I finished
up just as I ran out of time. It's just about time to start putting
this pig back together!

It seemed like I should record the pump's plate info for future
(parts-ordering?) reference:

[MBZ] Voltage

2007-06-21 Thread Levi Smith
Just curious if anyone else has taken much look at their voltages. I picked
up a cigarette lighter voltage meter at Wal-mart for like $15 that I'm
intending to use in some solar tinkering, but I decided to leave it in my
83' 300D while it's not doing anything else. This has proved interesting.

Now, first off I don't know what's suppose to be in the car. The dual-belt
alternator that was in the car when I got it died a few weeks ago, but the
car came with a working (wasn't sure till I got it on the car) used
alternator that I believe said 55amp Bosch on it, but it was a single pulley
until I figured out the right combination of spacers and nuts and the pulley
from the other one to get it to use that dual pulley.

I also checked it's readings compared to a volt meter on the battery and it
seems to average around .2V less than the battery is seeing.
But what I've seen is that basically with nothing on (except a fuel pump) I
think it might make it to 14v given enough time. It stays near that level
with the radio on (though I can definitely see it kick on and I should note
that it has some crappy amp the PO left in there drawing power). The gauge
reads to hundredths of a volt so I can see it when I turn the fuel pump or
basically anything on.
Turning headlights on is usually ok an keeps it above 13.2V usually. (and
I'm basing most of these while running, not at idle)
The big sucker is the blower and worse yet with AC on. Basically, it just
can't keep up. If I have max AC on and I'm cruising the highway I can
probably hold around 12.8V. If it actually gets things to a semi-cool state
and the fan slows a bit I can clear 13V. Now, with headlights and AC on?
That's like 12V. Now, come to idle with those on? You're dropping into the
11V range for sure.

So, I guess my question is, is this normal for an old alternator on an old
car? To my knowledge, your voltage is *supposed* to be at least 13.2V. I'm
wondering if that actually occurs with a new/rebuilt alternator, or if these
old beasts just don't quite keep up no matter what...

You're about a volt low for these days. I think 14.4 is about normal,
the old-time voltage was 13.8. Anything less is deficit spending!
My 190D has a 70A alternator, but unless you're running AC, max
blower, and all the lights just about anything you have should
keep the voltage up.

Try a new brush pack/regulator. Or the used one from your
old alternator, assuming that bad brushes wasn't what took
it out in the first place.

Yeah, that's why I was saying that it was reading about .2v lower than the
battery was seeing(via my fairly decent regular voltmeter). Though I'd more
likely attribute that to losses in the wiring between the battery and the

Re: [MBZ] Voltage

2007-06-21 Thread Scott Ritchey
I used one of these (from Autozone) for a while.

Couple observations: The plug-in volt meter was not accurate, especially
when hot (e.g. parked in sun) when it would read almost one volt high.
Second, the voltage at the lighter will be low because of the IR drop
through the fuses, wires, and ignition switch. The fact that the headlights
don't greatly effect tour reading indicates you are seeing IR drop, mostly.

So it's a slick, EZ to use tool that worked OK when cool and with minimal
load on the circuits. If you are concerned, recommend you run some temp
wires from a voltmeter inside the cabin direct to the battery. Then check
it under various conditions.

The recommendation to get a new brush-regulator is a good one. The new ones
put out a bit more voltage for the new batteries. Even better (and more
costly) bet a Bosch reman from Rusty. They are as good as new.

Subject: [MBZ] Voltage

When you're at 11v you're pulling from the battery and if you do that for any
extended amount of time or if you leave it drawn you'll ruin the battery.

Seems like you should replace the alternator (or the regulator first and then
the alternator if need be) now or replace the alternator AND battery soon.

There is a plastic sliding deal inside the top bracket that you can use
to (un)tension the thing via a bolt that if I recall is on the top

sorta like the alternator tensioner but is not too visible Otherwise
use a pry bar suitably arranged to tension it back after loosening all
the bolts (which will allow installation of the new belt).

[MBZ] Injector Spewing Fuel

2007-06-21 Thread Robert Rentfro
So.I button everything up from the A/C belt ordeal to schlep youngest
daughter to get hur har did and when I get to the hair joint about 1.25
miles away I smell fuel. Don't think too much of it. When she's done, we are
backing out and I see a goodly puddle 'neath the car. When I get home I look
and right beneath where the fuel lines go into the injector it is wicked
wet. Looks like the fuel lines. When running, you can see it seeping quickly
from the short fuel line. Guess I have to replace them.

How much line do I need to replace them all? Do they just push on? No
clamps, right? I've never replaced any fuel lines is all these years of MB
diesel ownership.

What was the able-to-stand-up-to-bio brand of fuel line called?

Buy a meter of the cloth covered line from Rusty or
your local MB dealer. This is metric tubing, so don't
try and cheat with something that's not - you'll
regret it.

Be careful with the very last piece that plugs the
last injector line. It has a little metal slug in
it to plug the line. You don't want to lose this.

[MBZ] Coolant route Merecedes 300D Turbo

2007-06-21 Thread Michael Esh
Hi Everyone,
I am looking the schematic for the coolant system for my 1984 300D Turbo and
the lines for the heater don't matchup with what is on the car.

Schematic is laid out like this:
Starting with drivers side hose coming from the block it goes through a
regulating valve(is this the monovalve) and then to the heat exchanger and from
there to the hose off the coolant pump bypass line on the passenger side of the
engine.

My system goes like this:
Starting with drivers side hose coming from the block it goes through the heat
exchanger then through the mono valve, then through the electric pump then to
the a hose off the coolant pump bypass line on the passenger side.

So basically my monovalve is between the heat exchanger and the coolant pump
and the schematic has the monovalve between the block and the heat exchanger.

Does it make a difference? I just got this car and have not used the heat yet.

Re: [MBZ] Injector Spewing Fuel

2007-06-21 Thread Allan Streib
I did this repair recently on my 300D. Removing the old lines can be
a little difficult, it may help to slit them slightly with a razor
knife, but don't go so deep that you scratch the nipples. Twisting
may help, try to pull them straight off so nothing gets bent.
Also recommended was angle-tipped needle nose pliers; I don't have any
and I did the job without.
The new lines just push on. Don't cut them overly long; the meter is
enough to replace them all but won't leave much left over. Use the
old pieces as a guide.

[MBZ] Another tower controller error

2007-06-21 Thread RELNGSON
NTSB Identification: OPS07IA005A
14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation
Incident occurred Sunday, June 17, 2007 in Teterboro, NJ
Aircraft: Piaggio Industrie P180, registration: N152SL
Injuries: 3 Uninjured.

This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors.
Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been
completed.

On June 17, 2007, at 1320 EDT (1720 UTC), a runway incursion occurred at
Teterboro Airport (TEB), New Jersey involving Avantair (VRN) flight 152, a
P180,
and N6026K, an SR22.

AT 1319:02, the pilot of VRN152, an IFR departure, advised the tower
controller that they were ready to depart from runway 24. The tower controller
responded, 'Avantair one five two, runway 24, cleared for takeoff.'

At 1319:42, the pilot of N6026K, a VFR departure, advised the tower
controller that he was 'ready to go [on runway 19] at [taxiway] bravo.' The
tower
controller responded, 'Cirrus two six kilo left turn northeast bound maintain
at or
below one thousand runway 19 at bravo cleared for takeoff.'

The pilot of VRN152 saw N6026K on departure roll and applied maximum braking,
experienced two blown tires on the main gear, as N6026K rolled past, through
the intersection 50 feet in front. VRN152 stopped in the intersection. The
tower controller stated that he did not see the incursion, so he did not cancel
either takeoff clearance.

There were 3 people in the tower cab; the tower/controller-in charge and two
developmental controllers who were working clearance delivery, one controller
was on break. The two developmental controllers were faced away from the front
of the cab and did not see the event.

The incident occurred during day VFR conditions (clear sky with 10 miles
visibility).

son had the front and rear glass replaced on my 300SD just before I bought
it from him [crack in the rear, 23 years of normal wear in the front].
Free, and SC regulations would not even allow the insurance company to note
it in his policy. Many / most? places require insurance to cover such
things.

We put a PPG windshield in our 1987 300SDL when we had it and it worked out
okay. Have the installer be careful of the two rivets on the top corners of
the roof that hold the molding down. I think they're aluminum and oxidize.
When they remove the molding the rivet that holds the molding clip on snaps.

2007-06-21 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
You shouldnt have to pay more than about $250 to have the windshield
replaced, labor and all. I wouldnt see why you would need any new
moulding. You do not have to buy the MB glass.

Roger Conlon wrote:

 $505 for windshield from Mercedes
$377.20 for six pieces of molding
 $100-$120 for install.

Do I need the Mercedes glass or should I go with a PPG glass, and is it
 necessary for new molding?
I have $100 deductible on my insurance but you can bet I'll pay for it in
the long run if I go
 all original Benz stuff.

My '83 300SD has a leak at the upper right corner of the windshield. I
anticipate needing a new gasket there as well as the rear glass since water
also leaks into the trunk. Does anything need to be done with the
aerodynamic trim on each side of the windshield? I want to have this

Buy a meter of the cloth covered line from Rusty or
your local MB dealer. This is metric tubing, so don't
try and cheat with something that's not - you'll
regret it.

Be careful with the very last piece that plugs the
last injector line. It has a little metal slug in
it to plug the line. You don't want to lose this.

Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL windshield replacement

The drip rail trim is swaged (pressed) on to a
weldment that comes out of the body. You can take it
off, but I guarantee you, you'll never get it back on
the way it went, or to even stay on permanently. On
top of that, if you don't have the driver tool to
drive it back on, or can't fabricate one, forget it.
Not to mention that even with the tool it's a tricky
job and seriously endangers the car finish if you're
not careful.

DO NOT buy anything buy OEM (MB) window seals.
Without going into a lengthy dissertation, non-OEM
seals are often poorly made, however, it's an
attribute that won't manifest itself for several
years. Consider the cost amortized over the life of
the car and it's easy to take.

leaked in the torrential rains we've been getting - even at highway

can't tell they touched it.
I think this windshield is glued in instead of using a gasket?

Glass - $98.52

[MBZ] Mog Ride

2007-06-21 Thread Dan Weeks
With a few recent posts about Mogs, I thought I'd add my impressions
after my first ride in a Mog last week, 100 miles or so through the
Sierra Madres in Mexico. I rode a '58 former NATO troop carrier that
an outfitter takes touristas like myself for rides in. Had an '00 2
liter 6 cyl 75 hp gas engine in it, a replacement for the original
diesel. Vehicle was in excellent shape. Was overkill for the dirt
road cruising and occasional stream fording we did--my Vanagon could
have taken the same route (much faster!), tho a car could not have.
Max speed for that rig was 48 mph, which we never saw--hit 40 a
couple times, but any grade slowed us down very quickly, due to the
weight of the vehicle--we were very lightly loaded.

They are very large, heavy machines. Very wide-ratio transmissions,
with two crawler gears and 4 road gears. There is no doubt they will
go through anything at all, but the widely spaced gears, and in this
one's case, a high-revving OHC six and a very clunky shifter that
prevented quick gear changes meant that there was no chance you could
upshift on a grade of any steepness, and much of the ride was done
with the engine bumping up against the rev limiter. Impressed me that
it would be not nearly as fun to drive as my brother's 1942
International KB7--that's also also heavy and underpowered, but with
a low-compression, slow-turning, tourquey stroker of a six and ten
close-ratio gears, there's always plenty of tourque on tap and the
perfect ratio for whatever you want to do. Engine braking was also
awkward due to the wide gears.

But the ride was quite comfortable, considering, due to the huge
tires, and in spite of its great height, was quite stable. They said
they could ford 5' of water, due to sealed engine, snorkle, etc.
However, the battery went dead, and we all (6 of us) had to push
start it once. That was a kick.

So, that's all I know about Mogs. Street-legal tractor pretty well
sums it up, and I have no doubt they're a blast at doing real serious
off-roading, or playing with the various cranes, side-dump boxes, and
all the other toys you can get on one. But as a truck--nah. That's
kind of missing the point, I think, like using a stock MBZ diesel for
drag racing. Can be done, but why?

Re: [MBZ] '79 450SEL with fuel problems

2007-06-21 Thread BillR
That's what I need to know. I am just looking for something for my daughter
to drive until I can buy the 300 SEL from Donald. Here is the owner's reply
to my questions:

Hey, Bill,
The update wasn't referring to the engine. That was an information update
for the ad. The engine is the original. The fuel system problem is from the
gas going stale.
The car sat in a shop for a couple of years. I have no idea what the gas
mileage was like, but it probably wasn't all that good with that huge V8.
When I keep a steady feed going into the air valve, it runs good and sounds
good. As for a history, I can only vouch for the past 3 years. I bought it
to fix up for myself, but am moving up north and can't take it w/ me. By the
looks of the car, it had a pretty easy life and was just parked and
forgotten. The interior is in good condition. No rips or tears. Just needs
to be cleaned. The floor mats and carpet also look good. It needs a paint
job, but the body is straight. Now, it has a flat tire, but shouldn't be any
problem to move. Come out and take a look, Bill, I think you will like it
for $750 cash. If interested, give me a call @ 904 619-9859. Thanks,
Metal Mike

Thoughts everyone?

Thanks - Bill

Fuel pump is shot, or the air flow meter flap is stuck, it has no fuel
delivery (could just be a fuel pump relay, too). Might be a big vac

At least it's not blowing huge black smoke clouds, that means a new
