OK, now it's clear. The A pillar and windshield top frame are different in the cabriolet - thicker and stronger to compensate for lack of a metal roof in case of a rollover accident. [MBZ] 560 SL. Sigh, it never ends...
The windshield wipers on Jill's 560SL are very loose, but linked tightly together indicating it's the motor linkage that's on its way out, that's what's kept this car grounded this very rainy Spring. Also, until this week the weather has been cold and wet and generally lousy, almost no top-down weather, especially for the less-than-hardy like my wife, so I haven't been inspired to work on this car. (I haven't even taken the hardtop off of _my_ car yet!) Anyway, we need the car so today I started pulling out the interior; I'd better hurry as the days are already getting shorter! I can't count the number of times I've done this particular operation on a 107 now, and it's getting old... Mirror, visors, top-rail trim, A-pillar trim. Glove box liner, console surround, ACC panel, stereo. One of the ACC panel's mounting ears was tearing off again, I used cyanoacrylate glue to re-secure it. We'll see. The console surround's rear locating pin was tearing off again, more glue there. Pull off light switch knob, 24mm wrench for light switch hex nut, unscrew parking brake knob. The parking brake knob split, as is so common with age. I pulled out the metal insert and wiped on a bit of Shoe Goo and re-inserted it, then used a small MB hose clamp to squeeze it back together as it dried. We'll see, I've generally had poor luck repairing these. 10mm socket on long extension for the two knee bolster bolts, T27 torx screwdriver for the airbag, large Allen socket for the steering wheel. Three screws hold in the driver's-side under-dash panel, I removed it and the light so I could put it in the trunk. Three tiny Philips screws removed the plastic retainer for the steering wheel brushes, then I could pull out the instrument cluster. It unplugs readily, just beware of flashing the clock power lead against ground! (I do it nearly every time and usually blow the fuse. I did it this time too, but the fuse somehow survived.) With the instrument cluster out I grabbed the wiper and wiggled it, I could see that the intermediate pivot point between the motor and the arms was coming loose from the car body. A missing bolt? Not sure, and I was out of time to continue. I suspect that this wiper problem could be dealt with without removing the dash, but there are other problems under there too. I plan to continue with dash removal. But another day, now it's time for breakfast... -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Keeps hands, feet etc out of the path of the spray. Be sure to winterize if you live where it gets cold enough to matter. I have 2 of them. My first is/was a Campbell Hausfeld unit - 4 HP Briggs - vertical shaft 1600PSI. Works OK. Really could use a bit more umph if you want to remove grease from an engine or that sort of thing. Has an adjustable wand so you don't swap the individual heads on and off. Wand broke after a couple of years and was expensive to replace. It is now out at the lake. Second one is a bit bigger but a Chinese clone of some sort. More pressure - 2250 or 2400 PSI or some such claim. Horizontal shaft and pump. Individual nozzles rather than adjustable. I like it better. Neither one was expensive. You could easily pay twice as much as I paid for either of these, especially if you want a genuine Honda engine etc. Not really worth it in my opinion unless you really plan to work it hard. Re: [MBZ] pressure washers
Don't knock Sears. I bought a 6.5 HP Sears pressure washer on sale probably 6-7 years ago. Other than a cracked fuel cap, it has worked flawlessly. Briggs Stratton engine, good runner, plenty of power. The real benchmark of a good pressure washer is nothing more than power. Get the most powerful unit you can afford. I say this based on living in Florida, where ownership of a pressure washer is almost mandatory. My pressure washer, using the proper nozzle, will easily cut through a 4x4. I would avoid the electric models, as they are woefully underpowered. I have had several pressure washers. Agree totally an electric is hardly accecptable. I had a great power washer from wal mart. It was a briggs and straton engine 2500psi 3gal which never gave me a problem. It got stolen, I then moved up to a honda 2800psi and 2.5 gallon. I have had several problems with the honda engine that were never a problem with the Briggs. If I were doing it again, I would definately consider the Briggs (cheaper, a little louder, less problematic). I think the brand I had was excel. The honda was purchased from Home Depot. I do like have an additional hose such that the washer does not have to be moved as much. I try to run all of the gas out of the power washer to keep it from clogging up the carb. -Original Message- From: Howard Ginsberg mbkindof...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Wed, Jun 22, 2011 4:24 pm Subject: Re: [MBZ] pressure washers What are you interested in pressure washing? -Howard On Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 4:49 PM, glenn brown g_010...@hotmail.com wrote: What do you guys know about pressure washers? Re: [MBZ] pressure washers
All good points about bigger is better if you want to really peel paint with it. I presently have a Honda powered [8 hp] one that puts out 3500 psi at the tip. It has the quick disconnect tip set which I find very handy since it allows lots of variation in the washers use. I also purchased a separate attachment for it that uses water pressure to blast sand. Previous sand blasters I've had used air pressure and were always over tasking the compressors. At 3500 PSI water pressure , not the case. Talk about power cleaning !!! Down to bare metal in seconds. Obviously, do not use it on sheet metal parts. In the past year of use, no problems with the engine or wash pump. I suggest that for winter storage you want to use a product called Staybil in the gas tank which keeps the fuel from turning to varnish, and make sure the hoses and pump are drained of water if you are above the freeze line. Bigger cost more money, so the question to be answered is what do I really want to use it for... a smaller unit with 2000 PSI pressure will do a nice job if you are only washing your car of hosing off the deck, but if you run mud bogs and have sea gulls on the deck you will need more volume and pressure, thus more cost. My feeling is that if you have a convertible and you live in the Pacific Northwest you are obligated to put the top down whenever it's not raining, no matter how cold it is. That's what scarves and tweed driving caps are for. ;) The Inland Empire (one of many, it appears) isn't really what one would consider the Pacific Northwet, no matter what it says on the map on USA Today. The East side of the Cascade mountains is a desert. The far east strips of WA/OR start to wet up a bit again. Re: [MBZ] AC BLOWS ICE COLD
Lucky Rich. My '82 SD was blowing just fine as far as cold 134a A/C goes. Bought it in '95. Some 3 years ago that went south. I recharged the thing. Lasted 6 months (mostly through the winter). Couldn't find the leak and left it allone. At the beginning this month I couldn't leave it alone any longer. Found the problem -- Compressor seal. 1 new compressor $ 250 1 new drier/receiver $ 30 1 new Exp. Device $ 20 4 cans R134a @ $10/ After all that, pressures not quite right (300/barely 35), duct air not more than 25 F below ambient (~100). A bystander mentioned that The fan there on the radiator is not running. New Aux fan $ 100 (aftermarket). Now, after nearly $ 500 -- no A/C. Latest culprit: R134a conversion L/P valve insert ($ 0,25). And the S/M says: check for leaks!! Just like Marshall and the fuses. It's the small things that can kill 'ya. Re: [MBZ] pressure washers
Depends on what you plan to do and how often you use it. for electric, buy Karcher only. Never snears or campbell housefeld. they melt with a very low duty cycle. Electric is good for occasional use. Serves my purposes. But with the karcher, I got the rotating head. that makes all the difference. I never use the other stuff, and without the rotating head, I would probably agee the electric are now useful. But with it, the karcher does all i need. I used it to peel paint off a house before painting. It does not strip paint, but does peel anything loose and any dirt/chalk. I despise briggs engines, and I will put up with some annoyance to use an electric motor that runs when you flip the switch (like a Diesel) rather than futzing with a stupid Briggs trying to get it to run. Now put a one cyl Diesel on, and I will be happy. On 22/06/2011 5:29 PM, G Mann wrote: All good points about bigger is better if you want to really peel paint with it. And skin.
