I have never felt the need to have a gun, but I respect the rights of those who do as long as they act responsibly with them, which I believe is about 99% of the (legal) owners. We had guns in the house as a kid, but we all had to take a gun safety course when we were fairly young, maybe 10-12 years old if memory serves me correctly. OK fair enough, you may replace 'assault rifle' with... Assault rifle _is_ an industry-recognized term, and with rare exceptions in the USA _nobody_ can have one. The banners coined the term assault weapon to apply to anything sufficiently 'scary' by their lights, and started using it heavily hoping that nobody would know the difference. (And easy enough to change the definition behind the scenes, to encompass more and more.) Either term is probably passe, in their lights. I expect them to start using machine gun (because they are _all_ machines, or at least machined), or, more likely, murder tubes. Re: [MBZ] OT GUN definition and They took their ball and when home
Sorry, respectfully I must not agree. The long description used below still ratchets the rhetoric to inflammatory rather than fact. The device is simply a rifle, nothing more, nothing less. To use any other descriptive term for it engages in fear mongering, which, in it's self is a continuation of the method of assault, which I must protest. In a more perfect world, the simple facts would be stated. Intelligent, capable of using logic and facts people would draw their own conclusions, and the points of failure by society in dealing with these miscreants which not only allowed them to carry out their evil acts, but supported them, would be recognized. In a wise clear thinking society, actions would then be taken that contained such individuals in such a way as to prevent harm to others. The underlying issues in each of these assaults by individuals who used a gun, if the true facts are looked at clearly, show a pattern of repeated failures, by society, to: 1. Recognize a dangerous individual. 2. Take firm and appropriate action immediately. 3. Remove that individual to a safe place for humane treatment. 4. Use a Catch and Release approach, rather than a Hold and Protect approach. To simply repeat 24/7 on mass media channels, inflammatory and inaccurate rhetoric about evil guns frankly scares and assaults people. I protest because it masks the facts. If the same work effort was devoted to recognizing the true points of failure that lead to these events the world would be a better place with more time to devote to our beloved Mercedes Diesels. I have yet to find even one case, in one court, where a device , ie a rifle, has met the legal standard of Mens Rea. Mens Rea [see Blacks Law Dictionary] requires two things, the Intent, and the Act. Please produce for me a device that by it's own volition, meets those qualifiers. A man may assault another with a rock, club, or gun.. but the rock, club, or gun are incapable of that act of assault by themselves. To be progressively mislead into the improper use of such inflammatory language, by those who at the same time loudly assault verbally themselves is in large part responsible for the volatile rhetoric we have, on both sides of the issue. Great ideas, but this is a VERY imperfect world. Very few of the people meeting the criteria that the recent evil doers meet actually commit violence. You catch and hold way too many to catch too few, and still don't know who is dangerous and who isn't. I suspect that it is true that the widespread availability of guns increases the use of them in cases where the lack of one would deter some acts. However, we're still talking relatively small numbers. If you want to get upset about senseless deaths, go after road rage and drunken driving. I'm far more scared of idiots with cars than idiots with guns. I don't see anything in the constitution that says you have a right to exceed the posted speed limits or drive under the influence of any drug, unlike the right to bear arms. It disgusts me that thousands of non-white children are killed every year by armed violence and not a peep is heard about it. We (US government) kill dozens of children with drone strikes in foreign countries and there isn't even a blurb on the news. Nineteen lily white kids from an affluent suburb get killed and it's a national tragedy. Media spin, faux compassion, lies, and more lies. All men are created equal. Re: [MBZ] OT GUN definition and They took their ball and when home
This discussion takes me back to the 1930s when few ordinary city dwellers could afford guns and the debate was about knives. Some wanted to make it a crime to carry a pocket knife and others didn't. A compromise was finally reached that permitted the carrying of pocket knives with blades no longer than 4 inches since a 4 inch blade (supposedly) couldn't reach the heart. That law may still be on the books in some cities. (Straight razors were also popular bar fighting tools, but you couldn't stab anyone with a razor and they were unhandy to carry around.) During the 1950s the first cheap, mass produced gun that nearly anyone could afford became available. It was known as the Saturday Night Special and those of us in the medical field hated them because, firing 22 shorts from a short barrel gun, the bullets buried themselves in a victims body and often caused internal bleeding. There were few Friday/Saturday nights that a surgeon wasn't digging around in a victims body trying to find a bullet and tie off the bleeder. Some weekends they would exhaust nearly the entire supply at the blood bank. Gerry From: OK Don okd...@gmail.com Great ideas, but this is a VERY imperfect world. I have noticed that the radiator in my old 300D appears to be held in place by rubber doughnut type things similar to the exhaust hangers. Mine look a bit the worse for wear. Cracks etc so I should likely get some new ones. Has anyone had one of these fail/ Did it cause much harm? Are they special items or are they small exhaust hangers? The rad hoses seem to hold the rad in place reasonably well so I wonder if the rad would move back into the fan if the rubber thing let go. Not an immediate issue as I am not driving the car these cold winter days anyway but something I should not forget when spring rolls around. We are not short of snow right now. It could be worse I suppose and may soon be but there is probably close to a foot on my lawn right now. It starts out as more but sort of settles over time. We had a bit of a storm last weekend and the city has ploughed the roads. Unfortunately, they left me with about 8 feet of hard packed snow in my front sidewalk. Some knee deep and the rest ankle deep. Had to use the ice chipper to break out chunks so I could shovel it away. If one shovels immediately after the plough goes through it is easier. If one waits a bit, then it becomes pretty solid. The plough went through in the night some time so we did not shovel right away. By dinner time the next evening, it was a lot like concrete. I spent many an evening shoveling snow -- hard to keep up in the early part of the winter there when it snows nearly every day. By the end of winter, snow in my back yard at Kincheloe, where it had accumulated naturally, was 4 feet deep; 12 feet deep in front yard where it been thrown by ploughs in street and driveway. My 2 sons learned to ski in front yard - side step (what's it called, don't remember) up pile in front yard, ski down it and across driveway, up pile on other side, down it and across neighbor's driveway and up on top of his front yard pile - repeat in reverse, etc. Wilton - Original Message - From: Peter Frederick psf...@earthlink.net To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2013 6:26 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] ON TOPIC rubber doodads that hold the rad in place SNOW Reminds me of living in Sault Ste. Re: [MBZ] ON TOPIC rubber doodads that hold the rad in place SNOW
Two words: Snow blower? I had one in Wisconsin that could throw snow into the next county. Yeah, it sucks to have to come home from work, all ready to put your feet up and take it easy, and put the snowmobile suit or Carharts on to go out and run the snow blower, but it's got to be done or you'll have a frozen mess the next day in many cases. Funny car story: When we lived in Wisconsin our kids were small, like 1 and 5. Mom wanted a minivan something awful and we really couldn't afford the outrageously expensive and popular Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler models of the time. I had driven a Ford Aerostar on a couple of jobs when traveling, and really liked it. No reason to pay attention to the fact that it was rear wheel drive, the kiss of death in snow country for such vehicles. Right. So we get a really nice used Aerostar. So I come home from work one day, stopping to pick up the kids at day care as I did every evening. My oldest son promptly crawls into the car seat in the back of my 1979 300TD and pipes up, Mom says if you want a van you can get your own damn van! Hmm. Not a good sign. I pull up to our house and see what appears to be the remains of a small nuclear device with tires having detonated in our front yard. Mind you, I said front yard, NOT driveway. Turns out, Mom would never back into the garage so she could just drive out in the morning. Call me sexist, but I have yet to find a time when I could get her to back a car into the garage. Anyway, think about backing a very light in the rear minivan onto a solid sheet of ice, having to make an immediate 90 degree turn to head down the driveway to the street. Slow going? Why give it more gas, of course! Get those wheels spying to the point of tire failure, if you like. Does the van move backwards in a straight line under these conditions? Of course not. It yaws to one side, sliding off of the pavement into the frozen lawn. OK, now we're spinning tires in the front lawn and going nowhere. So spin some more! Toss cups of kitty litter under the tires, right? Spin some more!! Move forward - no - back - no- forward! Whatever So you can easily picture this light in the rear Ford Aerostar doing doughnuts in the snow without gaining any sort of traction onto the driveway or street. At some point she was able to extricate the van and move on, no doubt without a fair amount of expletives and colorful language, which, without a doubt, was the source of my cherubic son spouting out Mom's constructive criticism of my vehicular choices. Two weeks later she had a Chevy S10 4 door 4x4. It was in the best interest of my safety and that of my lawn. [MBZ] OT GUN They went home - Much Bigger

Whole episode is quite disgusting. It is a cascading series of episodes, I'm posit. We gotta figure out what the gig is, and then circumvent it. I would also include as part of these episodes the constant haranguing about the rich get richer. The episodes continue, the plan is being implemented, and the most likely we are told in control is probably incorrect. We are smarter than this - we can figure this out. Re: [MBZ] OT GUN They took their ball and when home
Point: the deranged killer, not his weapon, be it a gun or fire or a bomb, is wholly responsible for the act. He would have acted no matter what laws were on the books. He would have found something to use, a nation cannot outlaw and eliminate everything and anything that could be used to kill. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '95 E300, '87 300TD, '73 Balboa 20 Andrew Strasfogel astrasfo...@gmail.com wrote: Not sure what your point is. [MBZ] Timing chain link
I'm finally replacing the timing chain on my 240D tomorrow. The chain came with a master link which is not a split link. When I attach the new chain to the old and peen on the link, turn the chain, then don't I have to grind off new link to separate old chain from new? Then don't I need a new link to attach the two ends of the new chain? How do I do this with only one link.?
