Neither of us stayed to see it sell but Chuck was told it went for 5K.? NOT coincidently, the seller has the same address as the auction house!? I guess if he can make a quick grand, more power to him.? But if the sale time was manipulated so that the heat drove all the buyers away, I say Shame!? This unit was supposed to be number 4 ( I wrote it down) but didn't come up until way later It is still a nice car, a?small scrape on the lower right rear door was the only physical problem I saw. I saw that car at the auction preview this morning.? Very nice condition overall, and the nicest dash I have seen in 20 years.? The NADA book was $5800 with the premium for mileage and condition bumping it up over 12K.? Seeing that target, I did not wait around to see what it went for.? I will sell my 79 for $4500.? Just as nice, except for the dash. Re: [MBZ] a/c hose seal?
Luther, Like Jim said, Local hose repair shop.? Tubes n Hoses did mine.? They will cut your fittings off, add a new swage piece, and crimp them to new hose.? About $40. Jim in Phoenix During the diagnosis of my '86 SDL's a/c system, I had the mechanic add dye to the system. While removing the freon, the mechanic and I looked the system over for dye leaks. The only one we found was on the large black rubber hose that goes from the compressor to the condenser. The leak was where the rubber goes into the fitting right by the radiator and above the drier. This hose is less than 2' long, but cannot be purchased on it's own. All of the large black suction hose must be purchased as a unit and Rusty quoted me around $600 g. So, is there a sealant that might be applied to the hose/fitting area that would stop the leak? (??) when driving on level ground it will cruse at the normal 75mph but acceleration is slow and the rpm doesn't go above 2500, it shifts OK both up and down. However going up hills it looses all power and when pushed to 3000 rpm it actually loses speed! It does not kick into turbo mode and continue to accelerate - but the overdrive kick down is working. Re: [MBZ] Turbo Rack Damper Theory/ maybe lubrication?
Lack of lubrication could cause sluggishness in the pump too. My 79 has an external oil line to lubricate the Fuel Injection pump. Don't know if all 617 diesels have this but it comes off the left side of the timing chain bulge on the block and goes via a plastic line to the IP. There is a restricting orifice at the source connector and I have always been afraid something will plug it up. It came with a number of different sealing washers and some instructions that do not apply to this application. Rusty included another set of sealing washers. On some makes, A low brake fluid level will turn off the ABS and give you a light. If the reservoir has two chambers, check to make sure the fluid level is good in both chambers. Brake fluid levels drop naturally as pad and shoes wear. Sometimes the light will come on when the fluid is cold but then go out as the brakes heat up, expanding the fluid. My 98 ML has the 5 speed with the empty dipstick tube. It also has the drain plug on the torque converter, and I was able to drain almost 7 quarts when I changed to Mobil 1 ATF at about 123k. To see if the accumulator (on the trans) is causing this, disconnect the vacuum line going to the accumulator.? Road test.? Each shift should come with a bang as you are simulating WOT.? If this is this true, you can adjust shift firmness to your liking. Curt, Can't help you on the wheel coordination as my fix, now going on 12 years, is to just get a drop of super glue on the tip of a toothpick and apply it to the shaft and gear hub that is loose. Re: [MBZ] PHX CL- Frying Pan into the Fire
Boy, that is a lot of car for the money, about 22 cents/lb!? you get twice as many CV joints, and driveshafts, and an expensive and troublesome transfer case.? It probably has had the transfer case replaced by now.? Audi once found that full time 4wd actually improved MPG (something about driving a tire made it roll easier), but I wouldn't hang your hat on that little item.? More substantial, full time 4wd is supposed to improve handling, especially in the rain and snow (what is that stuff?). On the positive side, my 94 Bravada, with full time 4wd, just passed 190,000 miles and has never needed any work on the drive train.? My 98 ML320 had the transfer case repaced by the PO at just over 100K, and recently I had to repace the front driveshaft due to a bad CV joint. I also had a leaking pinion seal on the front differential (yea, you get two of those ,too!) but that was an easy job with the driveshaft out.? ML just passing 157000 miles. Probably, your biggest worry might be rebuilding the rear suspension so look for work history in that area.? Look for cheap, off brand stuff, like cheap tires, cheap battery, etc., to indicate the mentality of the PO's. It was still starving for water, and when I removed the now emptied basket again, the water flow went back to normal. I inspected the basket and found that the risers on the bottom of the basket were broken off causing it to sit too low and too close to the suction pipe blocking the water flow! I drilled two 1/4 holes (one in each side of the bottom of the basket), and installed two bolts with nuts and tightened them leaving the 1/2 of the excess bolt sticking through the bottom. It worked! Re: [MBZ] Timing chain problem/ my comment
Archer, It is very hard to get the timing out of wack between the crankshaft and the injection pump! This, because the chain is held in contact with the IP timing gear with a screw ( that you can see penetrating the housing bulge on the driver's side), and the very small clearance where the chain goes around the crank gear. The camshaft can easily be put back in time by matching up the timing marks on the crank and the cam when you get the new chain in. As mentioned, if the cam is more than two teeth off you will experience valve contact with a piston. Not to worry, just back the cam up two teeth and you should be able to continue. NOTE: I used a bungee cord fastened overhead to pull the old chain out. Just stretch and rehook every foot or so. Therefore, pull both both ends of the chain tight and continue with the install of the new chain. You have at least a 95% chance of success. When you get both ends of the new chain visible you can hook both ends together over the cam gear. If you are able to turn the engine, get it to the TDC mark on the crankshaft. Then verfiy the timing marks have lined up on the camshaft. You may have to remove the cam gear to correct this, hopefully it is out only 1 or two teeth. With both sets of the factory timing marks aligned, at TDC, and the tensioner reinstalled, you should be able check for mechanical interference by turning the engine over manually through at least two revolutions. both sets of timing marks should now line up each TWO revolutions. ALways rotate the engine in a direction that would tighten the crankshaft nut! Start it up! At 95, I would expect about 40 psi at the suction and maybe 250 high side at idle with the electric fan on. Your evaporator temperature cannot go below the equivalent temperature for any given pressure. Looking at the R134 suction gauge you would observe that for 60PSI, you could only attain 63 degrees, minimum, which might feel nice but is not gonna cut it. Ideally, you want just enough freon in there to hold a steady suction pressure, at speed, just above the cutoff point. too much freon just occupies condenser space and makes it less efficient, resulting in a higher head pressure and higher suction pressure as well. However, I have little or no experience or exposure to these kinds of vehicles, so I would be interested in what those who have had direct experience think about various models and brands. Heck, I haven't even had a chance to look at Edmunds or anywhere else to see what companies are making in this type of vehicle. The requirements are pretty broad: Nissan and Toyota make dead reliable crew cabs in a small size, also the Chevy Colorado, The Ford Ranger, and the Dodge Dakota, which is the only one I know has a V8 option. All these trucks are pretty heavy and will get 14-16 city and maybe low 20s on the highway. Of course, Dodge has a full sized diesel pickup, Cummins powered, which many report over 20 MPG unloaded. There is a fair amount of space behind the seats without going to extended or crew cab options. Depending on what you haul, You should consider a car like the Toyota Prius Hybrid which has 4 doors and a Hatchback over a 17 cubic foot trunk. Used ones still have most of their 10 year drive train warranty left. Lots of choices out there! Re: [MBZ] car cover
I use Covercraft covers with the Evolution 4 material here in Phoenix. They have an elastic in the perimeter which lasts about 2 years and the covers last about 4. They are designed to let moisture out, but not in and the inner liner is very soft and does not seem to scratch the paint, tho no cover should be put on a dirty car. I highly recommend a water proof ground tarp under the car as moisture coming up out of the ground, or concrete, will cause surface rust on the frame, etc. Wolf also uses Evolution 4 in their better covers but I have not had one for years. You can often pick up a cover on Ebay for less than half the selling price which is about $160 at Checker. _Wolf Universal Fit Car Cover, For Cars 16'- 1 to 17'_ (http://cgi.ebay.com/Wolf-Universal-Fit-Car-Cover-For-Cars-16-1-to-17_W0QQitemZ280233107613QQihZ018 QQcategoryZ50073QQcmdZViewItem)this one is $90. If you are feeding a leaker, you likely need to add some oil too, or your compressor will lock up. They also have it with stop leak or with UV dye for leak detection. Re: [MBZ] What Tires to Buy?
Fisrt of all, Michelin has a $60 rebate on a set of four that ends on 5/31. I would buy them. They always balance with minimal wweights, and they roll round. On a cost per mile, you can justify a Michelin! This one of the few tires I would buy in an S speed rating, such as the Michelin X. Whatever tire you buy, get the H rating, not so much for the 130MPH speed rating, but because the stiffer sidewall affords better handling in a crash avoidance situation. I am of the opinion that Kuhmos are Not built with the same quality of materials as your premium brands. I had a set on my 95 Mustang and lost 3 of them due to road damage in less than 6 months. And the roads are not that bad in Phoenix! I must say the set then lasted 4 years without a repeat incident. I had a set of H rated Falkens (ZIEX)on my 79 300SD, because I had the 6 1/2 Bundts and wanted to use a 225/60X14 tire. They worked well but at 4 years, 3 of them blew out, two of them on my way to Starfest, Las Vegas. Phoenix is a tough climate for rubber anything and I would put a 5 year life on ANY brand tire, regardless of how much tread remained! Re: [MBZ] was diesel, now Motorcycles for Bob/NOT!
Bob, Riding a motorcycle in 100 degree plus weather is like riding in an oven! Proper safety gear makes it even more uncomfortable. YOU WILL NOT LIKE IT! That said, you would want four cylinders for smoothness, and enough power to push a full sized wind screen for comfort. The Honda 750 Goldwings are reliable and will go 100,000 miles. a smallish two cylinder will die in a year! All the big bike manufacturers make something similar. Rent or borrow a bike for a few days in june/july and get this idea out of your system. Get a used turbodiesel VW TDI and you will average in the 40's with AC and 4 walls around you. The Toyota dealers are rebating on new Prius hybrids, as production has caught up with demand. Your Commute is not ideal fior the Prius, but it should also get mileage in the 40's. I think the drivetrain has a 10 year warranty, and there are some tax credits available too. Re: [MBZ] trans RR shade-tree style
Luther, Harbor Freight sells a tranny handling adapter (about $30) which replaces the 5 inch saddle on your standard floor jack.? If you are thinking one man job, this will make the difference.? Unfortunately, it adds about 5 inches to the height you need to clear the frame.?? Worth it tho.? It straps the tranny down and tilts to permit angling the trans into place.? I just resealed my son's Dodge Caravan, by myself, and I am 69.? I did saw off about a 3 inch strip on the adapter to let it fit more easily in the space available.? Mine is available if you live close. For height, in front, I filled two std cement blocks, two pices of 3/4 plywood?which then I set my jack stands on.? In the back, the two jackstands were sufficient. Letting the engine/ trans assembly drop in the rear (keeping close watch for firewall clearance and cable strain) will make it easier to get at those honkin' big hex bolts, best reached with about 20 inches of extentions and a 1/2 breaker bar.? Clean the hex sockets (10mm) thoroughly with a brake cleaner, you don't want to round one of these and have it slip!? When they break loose, you will swear you broke something!? Heavy gloves will cushion the hands but watch your elbow.? Finally, get as much of the trans fluid out before you start, as it will run out the tailshaft when you pull the driveshaft. Good luck! Jim in Phoenix I'm thinking I need about 2' of clearance under the engine to squeeze the tranny in and out. Gerry,? There are no match marks at the flex discs to worry about.? I am concerned that your noisy differential was not the differential, but merely a weak differential support mount.? Thanks, Gerry '83 300D and 240D -- From: LWB250 [EMAIL PROTECTED] I had a 250LWB, which is a 123 chassis that's been stretched (by the factory) for use as a taxi. This particular chassis, due to the length, has a three piece drive shaft, meaning two flex disk, two center bearings, and three sections. I don't recall what precipitated the problem, but it developed (or may have had it when I got it) vibration at certain speeds. I found a bum center bearing and carrier and replaced it. No joy. I replaced the second center bearing and carrier. Still no relief. I RR'ed it, checked the marks, reassembled, nada. This took place over the course of several months. By the final time I RR'ed the whole thing (I was getting really good at it!) I found what I suspected was a bad U joint. Knowing that the process for replacing MB U joints was a very specialized one, I went to my local drive shaft repair house and talked to them about it. Heck, there's nothing special about that - we do it all the time! They had to ship it to their Miami location, since the shop here in Tampa didn't have a balancer that could handle the length of my shaft. No additional charge to do this, just a couple of days and it was back. I get the shaft in pieces, load it up, take it home and lay it out on the garage floor for reassembly. Guess what? They didn't put match marks on the pieces. Damn. I called them up and was assured that it didn't matter, as they had balanced it as separate sections as well as a complete shaft. What? They also said that if I installed it and it still had vibration to bring it back, they would rebalance it, and send it back with match marks. That's ultimately what happened. A real PITA, but after nearly two years I didn't have this horrendous vibration around 10 mph that sounded like it was going to tear open the floor just above the second center bearing. The rear mounting bracket appears to be held to the back cover with four of the cover bolts.? the ouput flanges look very similar in 6 bolt pattern and size.? The distance between the flanges also looks close. I have photos if anyone wants to pursue this further. Sometimes it jumps [like an air bubble] and sometimes it climbs and goes back down slowly. Tomorrow the cluster will be pulled and the resistance on the wire checked, as well as the vacuum lines. Any other thoughts ? Bill, Probably a corroded connection. Start by unplugging the connector at the driver's side of the cylinder head, and watch the gauge. There are two senders in the 2-3 cylinder area of the head i believe. Push the connector on and off a few times and see if the temperature reading becomes more accurate. A little known connection on the back of the glow plug relay is next. The wiring harness for the temperature sender is the same one that contains the wiring for the glow plugs. So the glow plug relay becomes a connection point for your sender. Same drill--unplug it and replug it a few times to remove the tarnish on the contacts that Mercedes silver is famous for. Do not sand the contacts! If these two points have not fixed the problem, NOW you can pay someone to remove the instrument cluster, which also has a circular push on connector on the back. Re: [MBZ] Hesitation Causes in 190D
I would definitely consider this a fuel problem, either water in the fuel, or dirty filters.??A dirty?cannister filter can restrict total fuel flow in a way that limits engine power, and this would be most obvious while climbing a hill.? Change both filters and consider cleaning the fuel tank suction strainer. A remote possibility is a clogged vent line on the fuel tank.? Driving the car up the same hill with tank cap removed would be a good test for that. Jim in Phoenix -Original Message- From: Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Tue, 8 Apr 2008 3:02 am Subject: [MBZ] Hesitation Causes in 190D It's not too bad, but going up the hill near our house with a relatively cold 87 190D NA, I shifted down to 2 (the thing will not shift down itself) and felt some light hesitation that came and went as we climbed the hill. Wonder if this is more likely to be engine or tranny? I'm still too new to the klatta klub to know if a diesel can act this way. As for the tranny: Recently, I checked the fluid and found it barely on the stick. Due to how difficult it is to get a reading on the stick, and thinking its being probably a quart and a half low would allow me to gingerly drive it to the store, I tried to climb our steep but short hill leading out of our home. I felt significant loss of power in a sort of on-and-off fashion. Cringing, I surmised this to be tranny slipping. I shifted to neutral and coasted back down the hill into my garage. So, can low tranny fluid cause this sort of slipping? By the way, the tranny leaks at a fairly significant pace - hence its low-ness. Re: [MBZ] loose 300SDL pistons
Kaleb, MB diesels are designed to run a very tight piston fit, less than 0.002.? You would be hard pressed to feel, let alone see, 0.002 movement.? Overheating, or very high mileage would be the likely causes of piston slop.? I think you should replace the engine with your spare. Cracks between the valve seats are quite common and usually do not leak water.? A sign that water was?leaking into?a cylinder would be a steam cleaned look. Jim in Phoenix -Original Message- From: Kaleb C. Striplin [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: mercedes Mailing List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Sun, 6 Apr 2008 3:55 pm Subject: [MBZ] loose 300SDL pistons So I have this 300SDL I picked up a while back. The guy who had it bought it from a list member from another list. Drove it back somewhere in the NE back to OK. Anyway, he says IIRC after a while of driving he couldnt keep oil in it. Not sure where it was going but thats what he said. It broke down and he had ot have it towed back to OK. Took it to a local shop and I know they ran a compression test on it but Im not sure what the numbers where. They pulled the head and I think they said it was warped. They also said the engine needs to be rebuilt because you could move one of the pistons back and forth in its bore. The head is sitting on the engine but not installed. Today I looked at it for a minute and the head does have a couple of cracks between a couple of cylinders valves. #1 piston is at TDC and I can move it back and forth very slightly. I cant tell you how much but its a little loose. #6 is also at TDC or close to it, and I can move it a little but its quite a bit tighter than #1. The others I cant move, they are down in their bore. So the question is, should this piston be able to be moved at all? Given this info and what the PO says happened, would I be better off just yanking the engine and dropping in another? That is what I am leaning towards. -- Kaleb C. Instead, I would look for one of those permanent pipe repair clamps that would fit around the tail shaft. If you get a stainless steel one you could have a new mount welded to it, or perhaps bolt through it with a couple carriage bolts. Home Depot, or a plumbing specialist should have a clamp big enough. I would fix it to minimize stress on the tail shaft housing, which will break next. Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 155 K miles **Planning your summer road trip? TransAdapt and Kennedy are two big makers of custom transmission adapters. You can put the six speed from the 93 and up Camaro and Firebird behind most popular engines including the Hemi and the Northstar. Kennedy supplies their adapters with a suitable fywheel as well. They have a huge choice of adapters for most engines to the VW/Porsche pattern transmissions for the dune buggy crowd. Prices run 500 and up. I bet if Kennedy had an order for 10 or so they would whip one up! Now then, if you want to talk transmissions, check out Mendeola. They make a sequential shifting 5 speed good for 800 HP in an off road truck application. The trans pattern is VW, but as mentioned above, lots of adapters available. The testing value for the brake booster is 0.75 to 0.80 bar. using 30 Hg as one bar would put you right at 22-23Hg Gas engines typically idle at 18-20 Hg, and drop well below that at WOT. That's why the brake booster, and the other systems, have check valves and reservoirs to save some of that good vacuum. I have seen more than one vacuum pump on my 79 300SD pull 20 at idle. This within a few seconds of start up. All the AC and brakes will work fine down to 10-12 or so. I believe you have an intermittent failure at the vacuum pump. A sticking check valve (my guess)or a cracked diaphragm. Chuck's (80 300SD) problem was intermittent and then became worse until he had them change the vacuum pump. Frys runs several ads a week and the one on Friday is 8 pages big, viewable on line. Noted tonight is a 1TB internal hard drive for $199.95 by Maxtor. order # 5524820. Or a 500 GB external drive for 114.99, by Western Digital. order # 5530040. The one Terabyte hard drive caught my eye because I used to be Chief Engineer of a computer facility for a major insurance company. I remember taking tours through our facility and speeling about our 2.3 Terabyte network, a 16,000 square foot room with spinning hard drives (multiple discs the size of a dinner plate), and main frames, consuming 600 KW of conditioned, uninteruptible power! Another 400 KW was consumed to provide cooling for said room! Hardware value--about 60 million dollars!! The staff to program and coordinate these resources approached 200. Now you can lay down $200 and plug this drive into your home PC! Incredible! Memories--- Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 155 K miles **Create a Home Theater Like the Pros. Re: [MBZ] CL V12 Coupe/hulk/BMW850i
Someone mentioned the 600 V12 coupe weighed about the same as a 1 bedroom condo..Probably so--but I know the Benz, with the double glass, would be more quiet than the condo! I always said a car enthusiast should own at least one V12 in his life time. Too that end, I bought a set of shop manuals for the Jag XJS V12 about 20 years ago. Never happened yet!! If I ever get a V12, it WON'T be a Jag. The Benz V12 made my wallet twitch. My absolute favorite V12 car has got to be the BMW 850i. There was one on Ebay not long ago. It may have been relisted. Re: [MBZ] Well .... looks like I'm a Mercedes owner :)
You should be able to get a deep socket on the crank from below without pulling the radiator.? 27 mm/1 1/16 socket fit a lot?of cars in this era. If it does not turn easily, I would pull the spark plugs again, add a big squirt of oil to?each cylinder, and then turn the engine over with the plugs removed. Good luck! Re: [MBZ] limited slip in 560SEL into 300SD/Won't interchange!
Mitch is correct. the 420 and 560 V8s used a physically larger differential. The diesels, 6s, and the 380 small V8 used the small differential. Different flange sizes are just one of the problems. So you must restrict your posi search to 380 or smaller engined 126 cars.. Jim in Phoenix In a message dated 3/11/2008 7:37:47 P.M. I can't remember if he was trying to put LSD or ASC in his W124, or was just looking for a different ratio. **It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money Finance. Re: [MBZ] 1983 300SD Shifting questions
Kevin, Marshall would remind us all that the fuel, boost, and vacuum,?systems must be right before ANY linkage adjustments are made.?? This because wider throttle openings would be necessary if the engine is not producing the correct power. A 0 to 60 time under 15 seconds would be a good starting point. Jim in Phoenix Thanks, Jim. That's what I thought, and the throttle linkage setup sounds like the most sensible place to start. I think that this tranny (722.3xx?) also has a control cable for shift timing. Now that spring is on its way, it'll be much more pleasant to crawl under there and see what's up. -Original Message- From: Kevin Kraly [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thu, 6 Mar 2008 2:03 am Subject: Re: [MBZ] 1983 300SD Shifting questions Thanks, Jim. Re: [MBZ] OT, Toyota problem
In a message dated 3/4/2008 9:00:30 A.M. US Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: 1995 pickup, V6. It starts quickly, then dies when the switch returns to the run position. I can even increase RPMs while the starter is engaged. I can remember the old days when while cranking, the coil got 12 volts, then ran with 6 volts. Do these new fangled chines do that? Harry, You are correct, suh! There used to be an extra contact on GM solenoids that put 12 volts directly to the coil for easier starting. Not necessary any more with electronic ignitions. HOWEVER: there is a fuel pump relay that would normally get it's signal from the engine computer management, and if the ECM does not see that the engine is turning over, it shuts off after a 2 second priming period. You could put 12 volts directly to the fuel pump( I think there is a test point on the under hood service jack where you can read fuel pump voltage directly) and see if the engine remains running. I have not done this, but I think you can put power to the fuel pump via the very same test point. A new crank position sensor would be the fix. If it is not the wires--see next paragraph. Seems to me there was a service bulletin on that era Toyota which said that the wiring harness was designed a little snug and that engine motion would cause wire breakage, especially with weak motor mounts. Might it be as soon as the engine catches, it tilts over a little, causing the broken wire to separate? Open the hood and watch for engine movement while starting the car. You might even brace it with a piece of wood. Or if there was one of those cheap anti theft systems installed (dealer rip off) it might be interrupting the engine ignition. I like the first scenario best! Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 264 K miles 98 ML 320, 153 K miles **It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms, and advice on AOL Money Finance. Re: [MBZ] ATF Level Question
Brian, the whole open area in the transmission will physically only hold about 2 1/2 quarts.? since your leak is probably at the torque converter seal, air is getting in where the oil is leaking out.? This lets the torque converter drain down into the trans case, which it normally doesn't accomplish for some time.? The torque converter holds about 2 1/2 quarts so about half of that could find it's way back to the trans case fairly quickly! Given the above scenario is true, you could actually be aggravating (feeding) the leak by filling the trans to the full mark, which doesn't leave enough space??for the oil to drain down.? The level in the trans case would?get high enough that it leaks out the tq seal, even with the engine off!? Is that the case?? Does the oil continue to drip, long after the engine is shut off? I am sorry to answer your question with more questions, but here is one more.? Have you checked the vacuum line to the transmission modulator for signs of oil?? a cracked modulator diaphragm can let trans fluid get sucked into the engine, agravating your fluid loss. Marshall (RIP) has many times said to never fill in the oil to more than halfway between the add and the full lines.? He was mainly talking about engine oil, but I have seen automatic transmissions, filled to the correct hot level, blow oil out the vent on a hard run up a long hill, or more likely, due to aeration of the fluid, caused by something as simple as a loose filter.? We are, after all, dealing? with a well used transmission, and quirky things can happen. I would start by never adding more than 1/2 quart when the dipstick gets down to the add mark.? Lucas makes an additive for automatics which may swell that leaking seal.?? Try to observe the drip rate with fluid at different levels, with the engine off. Finally, never park with the front of the car down hill! Jim in Phoenx -Original Message- From: Zoltan Finks [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Sent: Thu, 28 Feb 2008 5:46 am Subject: [MBZ] ATF Level Question Just checked the ATF earlier this evening on the 87 190D and found once again that the stick is dry. I assure you this pains me. But I'm learning just how often I have to add fluid to the leaky tranny. Heaven forefend the wife would ever check it. And I pulled the dipstick again a few minutes ago with engine off and cooled down. I found that the fluid level is just a bit above the full line. This all makes sense, but it reminded me of when I was dealing with the seller out in California. He, a plastic surgeon (so not a totally stupid man) was so sure that the trans fluid should be checked with the engine off. And when I showed him that the dipstick was dry with engine running, he said yes, that's how it should be. When you shut it off and check it, the level is right. I proceeded to show him in the manual where it states that the trans fluid should be checked with engine running and trans in park. Question is: If the fluid level is just above the full line (the highest of the two marks on the dipstick) with the engine off and cool, how low is the transmission on fluid? The reason I ask this is that it is very difficult to achieve a clear reading on that dipstick. One side will have something approaching a clear reading, and the other side will have fluid running half way up the stick. I suppose checking the dipstick after adding fluid contributes to this problem, but even when I don't do that, it's still really hard to get a clear reading.
