Todays electrolytics aren't as bad as yester-years. Tantalum caps are good, but not the end-all either. They're more exppensive to put on the board, so they drive cost up. If it's worth the extra? I'm not sure to be honest. The lower ESR is always good, as well as the thermal stability, so for high performance setups with limited airflow it could be an advantage. Their failure mode is quite interesting as well, they either slowly decrease in value, or explode. They're used to detonate some explosives believe it or not. Or you can have bootleg 'lytics made with the wrong ingredients that fail within a matter of weeks of being made. This happened to Apple and a number of other computer manufacturers back in 2005-6. IMacs had bad MBs and power supplies as a result. I have picked up several of these machines, and after replacing the failed (swollen) caps with new, all is well. Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down
Recently, my 3-4 yr old emachine motherboard went bad. Symptom was apparent spontaneous sleep mode that required unplug before it would restart. When I took off the case side and put a big fan blowing in room air, the machine would run OK for many hours: thermal problem confirmed. I found a used motherboard on the net ($80 delivered) and that was the fix. But I got impatient during troubleshooting and bought a new cheap Dell dual core for $350 which is VERY much faster. So the repaired emachine is now my spare. The main downside was transitioning from the windows 2000 interface to the Windows 7 interface (classic view helped). Also some old 16 bit software won't run on the 64 bit W7. Otherwise, W7 looks like an improvement even if this old dog had to learn some new tricks. So, IMO you probably have a bad motherboard, fixable for about $100. On the other hand, a new machine may be a better plan, particularly if it's your main workstation. But first be sure your software will run on the new OS. Scott -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] OT computer still shuts down
You can always replace the PS fan, they're usually easy to get at. I had to reverse the flow of my PSU fan to suit my case arrangement. Bit of a custom case, has a huge nidec Beta V fan blowing the hot air out of what used to be a decorative top vent. Needed the PSU to suck in air so that it didn't fight that fan (some interesting beat frequencies were being produced otherwise...). Yes, it's filtered. Mobil claims that the loss of CF is because its an obsolete standard and that the 15w50 still meets the CF standard even though its not on the bottle. I put it in my 240D a few thousand miles ago and it hasn't blown up yet ;) M1 5w40 ALWAYS had CI-4 on the bottle and met with approval on the list. I have yet to see anybody give convincing proof (like analysis) that it doesn't have zinc levels that are adequate. Basically my contention is I understand where you're coming from but you haven't offered ANY proof. I haven't either but I'm not contending that things have changed. -Curt Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2011 18:47:27 -0500 From: Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: Re: [MBZ] lubromoly oil Message-ID: a06240891ca6f5e3f3ebe@[10.10.100.225] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii ; format=flowed I just checked my stock of M1 and it is SL/CF. I know most of the new M1 stuff carries no Cx designation, because it is not suited for Diesels of any sort. Therefore the M1 Diesel Truck was brought out that is formulated for 2007 up Deetriot pickup Diesels. I think it was the time before last that the M1 thread ran that the lack of Zinc and phosphorous was discussed in depth. In the years since 2007, we have seen CG-4, CH-4, CI-4 and now CJ-4 designations. That should be some clue that the 2007 engines have caused a huge disruption in the motor oil business. At the same time, the ULSD has lost the lubricity required for older Diesel engines. A B5 blend for Diesel fuel provides the lost lubricity, and at least 5% of it is made in the USA. Re: [MBZ] 300SD wanted in POS brown
Dieselhead wrote: It was lame, but not for the reason you cite. It was lame because the implication was that an MB would have floated longer. That was the LAST thing Teddy wanted. His objective was to eliminate the problem quickly by drowning. For that he needed a car that sinks like a rock. The truth will never be known, but he probably held her down until she drowned. If he knew MJK was in the car. One analysis of the story concludes that MJK got tired of the orgy at the Kennedy cottage, and crawled into the back seat of the biggest car there to get some sleep. Then Ted and one of the other young ladies decided to leave for a private party, and Ted missed the turn onto the bridge. So, as far as Ted knows, his car and his sex object's purse are on the bottom of the pond. They walk back to the cottage, and Ted gets somebody else to take credit for the car in the pond, probably his driver or the girl who left her purse there when she swam out. Ted then hides in a hotel on the mainland to sleep it off. When MJK's body was found in the car, whoever was supposed to take credit for dunking the car was not willing to take credit for drowning Mary Jo, so Ted had to come up with a new story on the spot and stick to it for the rest of his life, no matter how unbelievable it might be. The part I like about this story is that it explains two things that neither the official version nor the commonly accepted version explain. What was Ted doing hiding in a hotel miles away, and what was some other girl's purse doing in the car while MJK's purse was in the cottage? To believe Ted's story, he and Mary Jo left the party early, taking the biggest car there, leaving the other eight people to drive back in a Valiant. Then, after losing both the car and MJK, he swam to the mainland to catch up on his sleep. It works well enough for me. I switch to using a virtual machine when my dual boot XP developed a bizarre boot problem. I had been fiddling with the guest OS concept for a while and used that as the kick I needed to actually do it. VirtualBox does seem to do much better with generous amounts of RAM, so don't skimp. 2k installs of most sw seems essentially as far as most need. Later jazz seems just so much marketing of worthless computer frilly junk. There is a number of software title I have to use that require a minimum of XP now. So I run XP as a guest when I must use them. MUCH better experience overall than dual boot. Partly because I don't have to have a fully usable (for me) environment in MS Win. Mitch, I like this lady's story of what happened. It's sorta like was there a shooter on the grassy knoll in Dallas. It's easy to make a story with the facts as you want them to be. Did Officer Look really run Kennedy's car off the road causing the accident? How did officer Look see into the back seat of a car backing up with both backup lights and taillights on shining into his face? And it goes on and on. I like the TV series Castle, but I don't think those writers could come up with good of a story. Why Mary feels the need to protect a Kennedy after so many years is a puzzle in itself. Maybe she knows more than the story tells. How could Mary Jo stay asleep in the back seat after it ran off the road per Officer Look and being bounced around...unless she was already dead and the attempted coverup was afoot. Women at these types of parties sometimes die from various causes, and leaving her in the water so long could help to wash away evidence. I don't buy this story any more than I bought Ted's at the time. But it does make for interesting reading. And Joan was really supportive of Ted in his presidential run. Re: [MBZ] A triplet of cheap 300SDs in Portland which may take off in 2nd!
All the auto Mercs I have had or dealt with, take off in 2nd, from memory mao's 240D took off in 2nd but then again my memory isahmmnh.well I forgot what I was going to say, what was the topic of discussion again? However this is not to say that some take off in 1st but as far as I recall 1st gear is supposed to be used when driving up steep grades or pulling a trailer. According to the owners manual for the petrol 124's, they should start in 2nd under moderate acceleration, when the gear selector is in 3 or D. As a side note, cars that have a S (standard) or E (economy) selector switch (very rare on Oz Benzes), they will always take off in 2nd if E is selected. Basically the Economy/Standard switch varies the length of the control cable going to the gear box. Which I think is one of those things that is a waste of time, as you get the same effect with how much pressure you put on the accelerator pedal. Guess it's one of those ahh look other car makers have an economy switch, we better have one too situations. Hendrik who selects 1st when on a hill Max Dillon wrote: Yes, I'm quite sure. Re: [MBZ] 603 filter change, cranking forever
Make sure the glow plugs are working. Glow again when it starts to sputter. Typically it will run on a few cylinders, stopping if you let off the starter, then gradually hit more and more and eventually run by itself. You won't overheat the starter if it's firing on a couple cylinders, it's not working very hard. Is there white smoke rolling out the exhaust? Should be if there is fuel delivery. You can try bypassing the fuel preheater -- switch the suction line directly to the lift pump. Replace the hoses if not new. You can also check for air leaks by removing the return line from the steel line and putting it in a can partially filled with fuel and have someone crank the engine -- if you get lots of bubbles, you have an air leak on the suction side. You may have a weak starter. They usually croak on a 603 by locking up solid, but it could be cranking slow. Minimum is 100 rprn, you should have better than that. Won't start otherwise, and you can crank til the end of time with a slow starter and nothing will happen. [MBZ] OT Politics
No, I don't think that class warfare is the way out of this mess, and I think taxing (penalizing) the most productive members of society to redistribute their wealth is a sure way to prolong it (and morally wrong as well). If Warren voluntarily put his money where his mouth is, stroked a check to our Treasury for few hundred million, I'd be impressed but I still would not agree. As I see it, liberals have tried a variation of tax and spend by spending first and putting off the tax part as long as possible. Now that chicken has come home to roost. Tea Party wants to behead, pluck and eat that chicken (and eat all its eggs to make sure no more chickens are coming later on), and I trend to agree. I'm sure your shocked to hear those words from me... Max -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Re: [MBZ] OT Politics
We need a true change, as the current political system, above even the town level in some instances, is so far out of touch with the voting public that elected them as to throw serious doubt on the actual democracy of our entire government. That congressional apointees can go fully against campaign promises with narry a slap on the wrist, vote how they please, and ignore the principles that they produced to get elected, is a clear indication that there is a fundamental flaw in our governmental model. Sadly, the old everyone votes for everything policy will never be feasable to ennact, so we must therefore hope that we can obtaine, through some means, stricter guidlines towards following through on campaign promises (within reason of course). It's sad when our representatives (not every rep, but most) fall so out of touch with the base of people who elected them. One of the faults we must deal with I guess... Re: [MBZ] 603 filter change, cranking forever
Once you have fuel at #6, the bleeding is done. From there on, it is let the nozzles fill up, and then they should deliver fuel. A diesel needs fuel, air to compress, and compression to run when hot. on prechamber engines, when cold, they need heat. In order to get enough compression, the starter has to turn fast enough. It is still possible that a leak is allowing air into the fuel. (Check for bubbles as in a prior post.) It is possible that the glow relay went bad, or the fuse is bad but looks ok. That would take out the required heat. (check for voltage at the glow plugs.) Air obstruction. (check for obstructions between air intake and the crossover pipe after the turbo.) (don't drop a socket in the turbo) Several things can lead to poor compression. rust forming on valves and seats, (or cylinder walls) during the dormancy. wear/age, slow turning starter. Take the other suggestions posted today, organize them under fuel, air, compression, and heat and go through the list. There is a reason. We just don't know yet what it is. I think air leakage in fuel lines, no voltage to the GPs, and rust are most likely problems. Someone a year or so ago had a leak after changing filters, and it turned out to be an oring on the fuel filter big bolt letting air into the system. In the future, before working on a dormant engine, start it up first, and let it run a few hours, then change filters and fluids. That way, rust can be cleaned up, and you will have proven the starter/battery system is ok. On Mon, Aug 8, 2011 at 7:05 PM, Dieselhead 126die...@gmail.com wrote: As for Alex, 1. crack the inj. lines at the injectors. 2. crack the return banjo fitting at the filter, or slip off the small line form the nozzles. 3. crank until you get fuel at the return line. 4. close the return lines 5. crank until you get fuel at the nozzles. 6. when you get fuel at the injectors, close the lines. 7. Crank it again. If you don't get fuel at step 3, then search for air leaks in the fuel lines. It is usually deteriorated rubber hose, but can be rust too. Well, I have followed steps 1-7 three times. Each time I get fuel at steps 3 and 6. Each time I've cranked the car until the battery ran down three or four times, putting it on the charger overnight between tries. Still no start. It will sound like three or four cylinders are firing irregularly, but never quite enough to turn under its own power. The battery is fresh and I can hear that it's turning plenty fast enough when first cranked. So that makes a total of about a dozen serious attempts at starting since changing the filters. At this point I feel like I'm just killing the starter. I don't see any sign of leaky lines. How would I test for air leaks too small to see easily? I thought of the glow plugs, but they are only a few years old (replaced when the #16 head blew). Resistance at the GP relay connector is 0.5 ohm between the terminal and ground for all six terminals. I don't have a VOM with a wide enough DC amp range to test the current draw, but I know that at least some current is being pulled by the fact that the interior lights dim and the pitch of the key-in buzzer goes lower when the key is in glow position (and the idiot light comes on steady). Help! I am about ready to push this car off a cliff (if I could get it started to drive it close enough).
