[mou-net] Bob Janssen
As previously posted, Bob Janssen recently died in late October, but there has been some uncertainty as to the date, time, and location of the memorial/funeral service. It will be held at Lakewood Cemetery in Mpls on Monday, November 13, at the “Historic Chapel” (aka the Memorial Chapel?), and it will start at 10:00 am. [mou-net] Becky Lystig memorial
Mark Lystig asked me to post the following on his behalf. As many of you know, Becky Lystig and Mark were very active in the MOU for decades as they served in a variety of roles. As Mark notes below, Becky died last December and invites you all to her memorial gathering on April 30. (Kim Eckert, Duluth) Becky Lystig, a member for many years and volunteer for the MOU, died on December 3, 2022. There will be an informal memorial gathering in her honor between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, 2023, No at the Wood Lake Nature Center (6710 Lake Shore Drive, Richfield). Please come if you are able, and remember to bring your hiking shoes and binoculars so that you can walk the boardwalk and look for migrants either before or after the gathering. -Mark Lystig General information and guidelines for posting: https://moumn.org/listservice.html Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html During the pandemic, the MOU encourages you to stay safe, practice social distancing, and continue to bird responsibly.
[mou-net] Bob Ekblad
I just learned that Bob Ekblad of Byron MN, long-time MOU member and a former MOU president, died this week. I had known him for decades and he was always one of my favorites to bird with and talk to. He is survived by his wife Diane Anderson. More details on a memorial service will hopefully be posted here as they become available. Since rarities seen in Duluth often do not appear on this listserv, note that an Ivory Gull was seen today at dawn at Canal Park. [mou-net] Harlequin Duck and Red-throated Loons still in Duluth
A sub-adult male Harlequin was seen this morning on the bay side of Park Point at both 19th street just north of Hearding Island and at the 43rd street bus turn around just north of the recreation area. This is presumably the same individual which had been seen last week and previously. Five Red-thr Loons also present on the lake side of Park Point south of the 12th street access. This species had also been seen by others at Park Point several times earlier this month. And a probable group of Whimbrels was seen distantly and very briefly on the sand bar on the back side of Hearding Island but they disappeared before a positive ID could be made. This species has also been reported in Duluth a few times earlier in May. [mou-net] Wilson’s Plover update
Just got a call from Linda Sparling who found the plover again about 2:30 at the original spot on the beach by the dune bridges at Park Point just north of Sky Harbor Airport. It seems to appear and disappear unpredictably but always at or near the same place. This suggests it spends much of the time hidden in the nearby dune grass. Birders are asked however not to walk through this fragile habitat - just wait until it reappears on the beach. -Kim Eckert, Duluth Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html During the pandemic, the MOU encourages you to stay safe, practice social distancing, and continue to bird responsibly.

[mou-net] Royal Tern location?
Adding to John’s earlier post about the tern at Interstate Island in Duluth that strictly MN listers should note. The ID continues to look good but the left tip of the island where all the sightings have been appears to be in Wisconsin. At least that’s what the Google maps app on my phone shows. Perhaps another mapping source on another device shows something different. At least the bird does not need to fly very far over the island to be in MN and that has happened. [mou-net] Barn Owl taken to raptor center
Just received a call from Linda Sparling that the owl in Sax-Zim along CR 7 is now on its way to The Raptor Center in St. Paul. It was noted to be in obvious bad shape and not flying well so it was picked up and is now en route to St. Paul. It was described as still alive but just barely so. The assumption is that it was starving, resulting in its diurnal hunting activity which is uncharacteristic of this species. By the way, this owl was apparently first seen on January 1 and reported to the Sax-Zim welcome center but I was told yesterday that the ID on Jan 1 was tentative and unconfirmed. It is roaming along a 40-block stretch of shoreline between Brighton beach and around the 2300 block of Water St so it can be hard to locate. [mou-net] Duluth Tufted Duck update
To elaborate on John Richardson’s recent posting: The channel between elevators B and C would be accessed from Helberg Dr which turns off Garfield Ave and goes south to the UPS building. Be sure you do not trespass into posted areas here by the railroad tracks, grain elevators and other private property in the Port Terminal area. So the duck now seems to be moving around a larger area than before which explains why some birders looking in and around Canal Park may have missed it on some recent days. Updates would still be appreciated since birders are still coming this week to look for it. [mou-net] Possible/probable Tufted Duck in Duluth
Female-plumaged bird found in shipping channel in Canal Park 15 minutes ago. Looked like female Greater Scaup with horizontal inch-long tuft at hindcrown. First thought tuft was set of disheveled crown feathers but didn’t appear so the more I watched it for ten minutes. But had no scope or camera with me and ship went through and flushed everything. 100-plus goldeneye also there but this duck mostly outside the flock. Don’t know which way it flew. Will update if bird is relocated with a positive ID. -Kim Eckert, Duluth Sent from my iPhone Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Slaty-backed Gull still in Grand Portage
Still present this morning as reported elsewhere by others. Note that after I found it yesterday I noted the mantle color seemed on the pale side for a Slaty-backed and the legs not as bright or deep pink. As always with large gulls out of range, the possibility of a hybrid could be considered. [mou-net] Eur Tree Sparrow, Whimbrel, probable Arctic Tern - Lake Co
Those in town now for Hawk Weekend might want to check Knife River and Two Harbors. This morning Jim Lind and I saw a Whimbrel land on Knife Island which flew off after a few minutes. A short time later an adult tern flew around over the lake for several minutes near the island. It appeared to be an Arctic Tern in all respects but it never came in quite close enough for a positive ID. We then went to the main cemetery along Hwy 61 in Two Harbors where Jim spotted a Eur Tree Sparrow near the dirt piles in the SE corner of the cemetery. We lost sight of it after a few minutes but it may still be in that area. Also present here were two early Bohemian Waxwings. [mou-net] Eur Tree Sparrow in Duluth
As a consolation prize assuming the Sage Thrasher is gone, the sparrow was seen again this morning in the alley between 3rd and 4th Ave East, between 1st and 2nd Streets. [mou-net] Sage Thrasher update
Since there has been nothing posted on this listserv since 9:30 this morning about the thrasher found by Clinton Nienhaus and others at Park Point in Duluth, here's an update. It continued to be seen all day along the hiking path/road beyond the Sky Harbor airport buildings. My understanding is that most of the afternoon sightings have been 0.4 mi down this path/road near the short boardwalk that goes left off the road and into the woods. Here there is a fence and closed gate across the road, and the thrasher was actively foraging along both sides of the road about 50 yards beyond the gate when I saw it at 5:45 pm. I'm posting this because it has not been reported yet on mounet and it's possible some visiting birders could be in Duluth this weekend who'd be interested. I believe this is only the third St Louis Co record, with the two previous collared-doves in Duluth disappearing shortly after being seen. [mou-net] Morris sewage ponds Purple Martins; Swift Co Blue Grosbeak
The Minn Birding Weekends group found a minimum of 4,000 Purple Martins this morning concentrated on the utility wires at the Morris sewage ponds. This was a careful and conservative estimate based on some us doing counts in increments of 100. Also here was a great study of all 4 regular peeps: White-rumped (a rarity in fall), Baird's, Semipalmated, Least. They were literally side-by-side for several minutes only about 25-30 feet away in excellent light. Also during the past few days in the counties in the Morris area were a total of 15 shorebird species (no concentrations or large mudflats found - N Ottawa impoundment in Grant Co was disappointing), E Screech-Owl on 270 St just W of Stevens CR 7, Olive-sided Flycatcher at Bonanza Grove in Big Stone Co, but relatively few migrant passerines (e.g., only 10 warbler species in 3 days). We were unable to relocate the ibis I saw in Traverse Co on Thursday. But some of us did see the Blue Grosbeak(s) today in Swift Co on 200th Ave SW, 0.4 mi N of Hwy 59. [mou-net] No Calliope in Duluth
The bird at Park Point is now probably gone. Arrived at 9:30 and talked to birders who have been here since early this morning and there have been no sightings since yesterday evening. Today's clearing weather may have prompted its apparent departure. But hopefully it will reappear and that news would then be updated here. Speaking of updates, there has been nothing recently on mounet about the Baird's Sparrow report in Douglas Co. The last update I saw was on Tuesday morning when the bird was seen but not heard, and its distinctive song is the best way to confirm the ID of this relatively nondescript species. I heard secondhand that it was heard later on Tuesday morning, but that there apparently were no sightings yesterday. These included an estimated 2800 Gr White-fronted Geese, at least 10 Ross's Geese mixed in with 100 or so Snows, 240 Tundra Swans, along with a wide variety of puddle ducks. To reach Miedd Lake WMA from Hanley Falls, go 6 mi W on CR 18, 2 mi S on CR 8, then jog a bit W and then S to the east side of the WMA. [mou-net] Ivory Gull present Saturday
This update is because no one else posted anything on mou-net since Friday morning and because I received a few inquiries. The Ivory Gull was still at Canal Park in Duluth yesterday as usual despite the colder temperatures. It will probably reappear today around 8:00 am as on previous days and be seen off and on all day until around 3:30 or so. As most visiting birders are aware, a Gyrfalcon is still present as well around the Peavey grain elevator in Superior, but to my knowledge it has not been reported on the Duluth side of the harbor. Most sightings seem to be between late morning and around 3:30. But I've heard of at least one trespassing incident, so birders need to stay along the public road and not park where they might Sent from my iPhone Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
Re: [mou-net] Ivory Gull present Saturday
Sorry. Previous posting got cut off. Birders are asked to stay on the road, not park where they might block traffic or any driveways, and to obviously stay off any posted private property. [mou-net] Ivory Gull apparently gone
Unfortunately I would have to agree with Jeremy that there were apparently no sightings of the gull at Canal Park today. I spoke as well with birders who all reported that no one they talked to was aware of it being seen on Sunday. Unless it reappears in the coming days, it appears that Saturday, January 9, was its last day of occurrence. [mou-net] Ivory Gull still here Friday
Present since around 8am and still looking for food at 9am when I left. But I saw no fish left on the breakwall sidewalk so if anyone is going down there consider bringing some.
