It's a US bank. They need to have security, obviously, and it needs to
be effective in this day and age, not just some red-faced retired
sergeant major. I don't blame them for having effective security, but
they need to get their facts right and not try to intimidate people
who are going about their lawful business.

I think I might keep a copy of this in my camera bag:
http://www.sirimo.co.uk/ukpr.php

it summarises the law as it applies to UK photographers. The page
includes a link to the equivalents for the US and Australia. In a
security-guard-who-thinks-he-knows-the-law situation you could give
him a copy, offer your name and address, and tell him that if he wants
to take the matter further he should contact your lawyers (Theriault,
Grabbit Runn of Toronto).

one started walking towards me:

http://www.web-options.com/Bouncer.jpg

The usual argument ensued:

Bouncer (East European accent): You are not allowed to photograph this
building
Me: This is a public place, I can photograph whatever I like
Bouncer: It is against the law
Me: Are you a lawyer?
Bouncer: No. It is what I have been told. Are you a lawyer?
Me: Yes. Tell whoever told you that that they are wrong
Bouncer: This is what I have been told
Me: You've been told wrong

But I never got the shot I wanted.

It really pisses me off when people do that. Anyway, the bank I work
for is bigger than the bank he works for, so there.

You obviously did the safe thing by not taking the shot you wanted,
but I've always wondered what would happen in those situations if one
continued shooting and the bouncer roughed you up, tried to take your
camera, in any way assaulted or battered you.

I suppose a law suit would be in the offing.

That being said, I'd prefer to be unhurt and poor to being black and
blue (or worse) with monies in pocket. Best not to argue with such
 people...

If you want to press it, the obvious answer is to return with twenty or
thirty colleagues and carry on shooting. Especially the laying on of
hands bit. One lawsuit the bank will not be bothered about; twenty or
thirty, with masses of photographic evidence, will be a different matter.

Still, I like the shot you got...

here is, whenever someone somewhere in the world tweezes out an

p.s. I tweeze the occasional eyebrow ever since my barber started

The first time I went to Shaftesbury a few years ago I deliberately
didn't go to Gold Hill - it's such a photographic cliché. This time,
though, I thought I'd better get it over and done with. Luckily I was
about 30 minutes too late to get the best light, so I took the
mandatory shot and had done with it. It is a very lovely spot though,
and St. James at the foot of the hill is very, very beautiful.

That first advert reminds me of my mother and her sisters and brother.
There are 5 of them, brought up in a Bradford terrace in the 30s by
their widowed mother - real urban poverty in those days. One of the
stories they reminisce about is being given a farthing once, so they
bought a stick of liqourice between the 5 of them and all had a lick.

Lixury!

Here's a slightly better quality version of the Ridley Scott advert,
showing the light a bit better:

The only body that I'm aware of that had large differences in
behavior, beyond the scope of the usual release notes that accompany
the firmware upgrade, was the *ist DS. If you download the manual for
the *ist DS2, its instruction are a better match to the latest fw
upgrade available for the DS body.

There are small notes that accompany each firmware update. I've not
found any reason to need anything deeper for the K10D's updates.

(The Panasonic L1 recently got a fw v2 update that is extensive
enough that they put out a five page PDF addendum...)

Bill -

That's where we diverge in our methodology. The unfortunate truth is
that if you don't have a chain of command, you really don't have an
effective military. So, yes, we do have heroes - everyone who puts
their all on the line at the will of their commander is a hero in my
book. No more so nor less now than when your father fought.

The problem lies with the politicians (and the commander-in-chief, no
matter what name you give him/her is *still* a politician) that make the
policy to put the military into action. And with the populace who let
themselves be led down the primrose path to where we are now under the
guise of protecting us from something (which in reality didn't exist).

We're not a fascist state yet, but if we become one it won't be because
of military initiative, it will be from politicians ignoring the
constitution and the people being apathetic enough to let them do it.

K10D in the rain

2007-06-23 Thread Frits Wüthrich
A few weeks ago my daughter's hockey team played in a tournement in Amsterdam.
During the second match the rain came down during this match, and I kept on
shooting. After this match I was in the clubhouse, with the soaking K10D in
my hands, and another father was looking in dispair at my K10D. I told him
the camera could deal with the rain, he was impressed. He showed his Canon
DSLR, which was dry and didn't leave his bag because of the rain.
I am very happy with my K10D.

that if you don't have a chain of command, you really don't have an
effective military. So, yes, we do have heroes - everyone who puts
their all on the line at the will of their commander is a hero in my
book. No more so nor less now than when your father fought.

I guess the difference is that my father never saw himself as a hero. He was
sent off to do a job, he did it competently (he was an artillery spotter),
and he came home and got on with life. He didn't want to be put on a plinthe
for his efforts, he just didn't ever want to pick up a gun, ever again.
He did a job that needed doing, but he never felt good about the number of
deaths he caused during his stint, and he never lost sight of the fact that
the people he killed were people.

We don't have the long love affair with our military.

If you do it will be a combination of apathy, a political arm willing take
advantage of said apathy, and a military arm willing to do the bidding of
the politicians, not because it is the right thing to do, but because they
are following orders, blindly and without concience.
