Re: OT - Camera Store X100s and X20 Hands On Field Test

I watched that. I like the design of those cameras. The xpro is kind of
really sexy in a way, BUT I really don't like the xtrans sensor.

What don't you like about it? Its colour? its size? Or is there
something technical about it that you don't like?

The k-5 is better in certain ways and better at high iso too. There are also
still problems with lightroom and quite honestly I do not like that fuji
over reports iso by a half stop to make their camera look better in
comparisons. The k-5 IIs comparisons I've seen show that they both resolve
similar levels of detail, but I believe the IIs edges it out and is almost
comparable to the 5dmk2 in terms of resolving power.

No weather proofing or shake reduction either. Bummer. I know the longer
lenses feature IS, but my k-5 has it with every lens I mount.

Fine. If that's important to you, then it's not the camera for you. If
you want something that's small, light and takes a wide range of old
MF lenses then, in my opinion the X-Pro 1 is a great candidate.

I think I still vastly prefer a dslr ovf to a rangefinder too.

Last time I looked it wasn't a rangefinder. Just checked; it still
isn't. It's an autofocus mirrorless with a superb optical viewfinder
and the option of a pretty good OVF too.

Different strokes. Nice street camera though if they ever get the af to
dslr like speeds.

AF speed is fine for me. And anyway, it's still possible to set a
hyperfocal distance and shoot happily all day without worrying. That's
what I've been Doing with my MF Pentax 28 2.8 and I'm quite happy with
it.

I still shoot iSO 400 film, and in terms of exposure values, it's virtually

Of course it's important to note that Tri-X at a stop or even 1.5 stops
underexposed can still yield a pretty good image, since we're working with a
negative. With the positive of a digital camera, we need to be pretty much
right on. It's more like shooting transparency film.

Re: FILM SLR ISO / ASA vs DSLR ISO

2013-03-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Do a test with your cameras.

Use an incident light meter to shoot a grayscale, a color swatch, and
a tri-tone test target on ASA 400 slide film, setting the exposure
100% manually. Set the camera to meter and set the exposure
automatically too. Then do the same thing with your digital camera,
setting it to produce 'normal' or 'standard' JPEG output.

Differences on the incident light meter exposures will tell you how
the ISO calibration differs.
Differences on the camera metering tells you how the metering
calibrations differ.

The results should look the same on the incident meter exposures and
will likely differ on the cameras' meter exposures. Most digital
camera meters are calibrated to protect from highlight saturation by
underexposure as digital sensors 'hard clip' at saturation. Film has a
softer roll-off at the point of blocking up highlights, even slide
film.

Once you understand how the characteristics of your digital and film
cameras' metering calibration differ, the rest should be mostly
obvious.

Travel planning time …

2013-03-15 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hallo y'all Pentaxians,

Getting close to the mark ... I'm traveling to the UK and will be there for
three weeks, arriving March 28 and departing for home on April 16. I've a
wedding to attend and other events to deal with in London area until April 3
already (some part of which possibly April 1-2 might include a visit to the
Tate Modern), and after that I'll meander one way or another to visit friends
on the Isle of Man.

Anyone available for visiting, etc? Shoot a note to my personal email and
let's see if we can work something out.

thanks!

I agree with Jack: that's very purple. But it's a pretty purple, at least.

More bothersome to me is the distractingly tilted horizon. And I'd
have lowered the horizon so it isn't almost centered.

Ignoring all that it's a gorgeous sunset, Dan. I could really use one
of those right about now.

Re: PESO: Reading at the Beach

2013-03-15 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I understand your disappointment, Bob.

I was on the grass over the beach waiting to photograph yet another
Maui Sunset (a daily ritual on the Valley Isle). I noticed this
person ignoring the setting sun,and ignoring the sunset watchers. At
first, I could not tell whether the reader was a man or woman, because
of the attire and the hat. That was one of the things that drew my
attention. When some noisy children ran by, the reader looked up, and
I could see he was a man.

Look, even in Maui, not everyone is buff and sexy. They even permit
old dudes like me on the beach, provided we wear board shorts instead
of Speedos. G

I intended this as a slice of life image, in my beach photography
series. This year, iPads and Kindles far outnumbered books of real
paper, making him even more of an outlier, and an individual.

I'll try to find more images of pretty young women for future postings.

OT Q: pen for signing on inkjet paper?

2013-03-15 Thread Bruce Walker
Advice solicited: I want to sign a print I'm selling, discretely on
the front below the image (ie in the white border). So I need a grey
or silver fine-point pen that will write indelibly on Epson Satin
Photographic 240 GSM inkjet paper.

I bought a silver Pilot Super Color Extra Fine pen yesterday and
tested on some scraps, but even after 18 hours of drying it easily
smears. I really like the look of it -- not too contrasty and bold
like a black pen would be.

Would some pencil work? I'm sure a Sharpie would work for the
indelible part, but they have too fat a tip, and I don't think grey is
available.

Seems such a simple thing: sign a print. Sigh.

What do you do?

FYI, Sharpies are available with quite fine tips; I use one to sign
the backs of credit cards. It's either Ultra Fine or Extra Fine.
The one that's simply called Fine isn't.

I can't speak to their use on photographs specifically (e.g. archival concerns).

I read that article the other day. A nice read. I've always seen
photography as a mountain I am climbing. I use that thought often.
I've come a long way in 5+ years of shooting almost religiously
every day. I could spend a lifetime trying to reach the top. It
keeps me going, knowing that everything I do just gets better.
I've been in several ruts, but when I put the camera down, the
only cure to the depression is to pick it back up again and keep
shooting. When I die, you'll probably find me still clutching my
faithful companion. Hopefully there will be at least good shot or two
on the card. Its all I can leave behind.

Re: PESO: End of Another Perfect Day in Paradise

2013-03-15 Thread John Sessoms

My first thought was Homer's wine dark sea.

From: Bruce Walker

I agree with Jack: that's very purple. But it's a pretty purple, at least.

More bothersome to me is the distractingly tilted horizon. And I'd
have lowered the horizon so it isn't almost centered.

Ignoring all that it's a gorgeous sunset, Dan. I could really use one
of those right about now.

LOL! Thanks Stan.

Yes, pinhole and zone plate photography is a different order of thing

For me, it takes concerted effort and working with nothing else for
several days to begin to 'see' in this capture medium. Very different
as to what works and doesn't work compared to shooting with any other

It kind of bothers me. There's either too much exposure if the sunset is
the subject or not enough if the barn is really the subject. Somehow you
seem to have struck an unhappy middle.

OT Q: pen for signing on inkjet paper?

2013-03-15 Thread John Sessoms

From: Bruce Walker

I use a Prismacolor Premier Metallic Gold marker. They also make them in
silver.

I don't do inkjet printing anymore, but these worked when I did. They're
also good for signing C-prints (RA-4)prints.

Here's an example (of the marker):

http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/prismacolor-art-marker-pm-118-metallic-silver-745570/

I buy mine locally from Jerry's Artarama. I think any local artist
supply shop should have them.

I really hope that Pentax decides to go the Nikon route and fully

everywhere when I don't want to carry a heavy DSLR. I am still
undecided, I like the flexibility of the X20 concept (a small but solid
camera with a good viewfinder and a fast wide to moderate tele zoom),
but the IQ of the full size samples I have seen in the Internet hasn't
convinced me that it is the right choice. It seems that its small sensor
is nothing to write home about. On the other hand, the IQ of the X100

Ok. Sorry for quoting you steve. I sometimes forget about that with k9. It
doesn't show the quoted text automatically.

I'm finding that yeah highlights blow with what it sets a lot. I'm
always trying to retain highlights in the jpeg. Very much like what
another person said in this thread who's name is now suddenly escaping
me. I do use highlight protection a lot too. My k-7 seemed to try to
preserve highlights more. Sometimes I feel like my k-5 is exposing for
the shadows. My prior experience is all compact cameras/bridge cameras
and their live view metering is usually extremely consistent in
comparison. The k-7 I got a good feel forthe k-5 seems to want to blow
everything. I need to test some more quite honestly. I've been doing lots of
low light shooting lately, so I could just be running into operating limits
of the meter. Its most likely just this fa 28-80. My 50mm I'm using atm seems
to be metering much more predictably, center weighted only and all.

Tends toward purple.

I don't know why the seller descibes the Leica lens as a macro, Leica
certainly doesn't and at the highest reproduction ratio: 1:6.7 who
would. Nice lens though.

Yep. The seller even states that the minimum focusing distance of the
lens is 1.5 meters (or 5 feet). That's nowhere near macro with a 180mm
