Re: A little better luck tonight

2020-12-21 Thread Bob Pdml
Very impressive. I looked for it yesterday but there was too much cloud low on
the horizon. I’ll look again today, but right at the moment it’s raining
heavily and looks set to continue all day. I’ve never seen the rings of Saturn
but hopefully with binoculars I may be able to. I won’t try and photograph it
as that is doomed from the start.

No, absolutely not. Continuity means nothing to these people. The difference in
film stock is quite evident, and no doubt quite deliberate since it it is the
only moving sequence in the, er, movie.

Many people consider it be the best sci-if film ever made. I haven’t seen
enough sci-if to make a judgement, but it’s a damned good film and it’s kept
the intellos busy for 58 years, and that can’t be bad.

That’s really barbaric isn’t it?

There was talk a few years ago of doing something similar to Greenwich Market,
building a glass and steel tower inside the old market building. Luckily for
once good taste prevailed and they carried out a sympathetic restoration and
improvement of the way space is used.

There’s still a lot of talk about doing something nasty at Smithfield Market
though.

2020-12-03 Thread Bob Pdml
Capt. Sir Richard Francis Burton, one of my great heroes of the Ripping Yarns
variety, was the finest swordsman in Europe, literally as well as
metaphorically, and always used a heavy metal walking stick to keep his sword
arm strong.

In the good old days you could have your walking stick made with kind of
knobbles or large knurls along the length so that if you were approached by a
ruffian, a member of the working classes or a foreigner it was a simple matter
to run the knobbly bits swiftly and forcefully across their shins or their
skull and they would think twice in future about breaking the social distancing
code.

Re: OT steak and potatoes

2020-12-03 Thread Bob Pdml
That’s very similar to pommes Macaire, which uses chives rather than onion, and
sometime a mashed baked potato (without the skin) rather than a boiled or
steamed potato.

Mashed potato with caramelised onions piled on top is classic, and of course if
you have boiled cabbage or similar greens lying around then bubble and squeak
must be on the menu.

The south coast area I’m living in now is apparently the sunniest part of
England, and Worthing one of the sunniest towns. Today it’s been crystal clear
sunlight, not a cloud in the sky, with a high of about 8C I think, and flat
calm.

There’s a lot of pleasure to be had from the changing of the seasons though,
and from long walks and bike rides on days like yesterday.

It’s our loss as well as yours for probably the most stupid political decision
this country has ever taken. I can’t call it an Iron Curtain because it is made
of 100% pure, highest-grade stupidIty, which is probably even more
impenetrable. I hope we can quickly find a way of taking it down again so that
we can easily enjoy each other’s countries once more.

One of the few benefits of the virus (and the Brexit process) is that it has
exposed the fundamental incompetence of the demagogues and populists, so
perhaps it will hasten their demise.

I think it’s going to depend on how far you want to transport the stuff, what
the terrain is like, and what you expect to photograph when you get there.

I would never carry anything like that on my body for any distance, but you
could put a camera insert into a robust musette for s short distance. The best
solution of you’ll be stopping and shooting periodically rather than just
transporting stuff is to put the camera and a lens in the bar bag.

At the moment I am thinking about the logistics of bird photography on RSPB
reserves. There is one fairly close to me called Pulborough Brooks which I
could cycle to in about an hour:
https://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves-and-events/reserves-a-z/pulborough-brooks/

I would need to transport a tripod, 50-200mm 4/3rds lens, camera, a couple of
other lenses and all the other paraphernalia of photography, plus bike repair
kit, lunch, hot water, tea bags, binoculars and so on. Most of the stuff would
fit in my Carradice Camper Longflap saddlebag with plenty of spare space, and I
think I could fairly easily strap the tripod across the top of it, as it is
designed to carry a tent that way.

Assuming there is somewhere safe to lock the bike when I get there, the next
question is shoes. Nobody wants to walk in cycling shoes across a nature
reserve carrying all that crap, and nobody wants to cycle for any length of
time in walking boots.

In short, a handlebar bag and a saddle bag should be enough for most needs, I
think.
Something like this would probably do it. That’s a Carradice Super C saddlebag
at the back and my Domke F5 on the front, as mentioned in a previous thread.

I have an OMD E-M1 MkII and several lenses. The whole system is very good
indeed and I like the cameras and lenses a lot.

I haven’t taken the E-M1 on a multi-day bike tour yet, but I did make my E3
(4/3rds but not micro 4/3rds) on a couple of trips to France a few years ago in
a Domke F5 strapped to the handlebars. That worked quite well but the camera
and lens were a bit bulky, and the bag is not meant to be strapped to a bike
and I wore a hole in it.

I’ve been carrying the E-M1 on day trips in a Crumpler insert inside a proper
handlebar bag
(https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/luggage/gilles-berthoud-handlebar-bag-gb905-black-53-litre/)
which also fits other bits and pieces such as my wallet, phone, glasses, map
and compass, sandwich and so on. This works well. This set-up will take the
body and my 12-40/2.8 lens, but that combo is quite bulky so I bought a pancake
zoom
(https://www.olympus.co.uk/site/en/c/lenses/om_d_pen_lenses/m_zuiko/m_zuiko_digital_14_42mm_13556_ez/index.html),
which is not too bad for on-the-bike use, but on a long multi-day trip I’d
pack a proper lens as well.

To reduce bulk further, and to get to your question, I’ve been thinking of
getting one of the less SLR-like bodies and the choice seems to me to between
the rangefinder-like Olympus Pen-F and the Panasonic GX8 or GX9, which all have
viewfinders rather just squint at the screen on the back.

However, the Pen-F is discontinued and still rather pricey; the others are also
quite pricey, even used, so I’m not sure I want to go there now that I’ve
stopped working.

If I pursue this idea of bulking down I might look at something else
altogether. I have used my Fuji X20 a lot, but the viewfinder is too small and
picture quality could be better; it has also found its way apparently
irretrievably into somebody’s handbag.

But something small, robust with a decent VF, good picture quality, manual
settings, RAW, and a zoom range of about 25-100mm 35mm-equivalent would be a
winner.

Even without the pestilence patio heaters are popping up everywhere because

I don’t think it was ever meant for serious photographers, but most of the

Re: Dungeness - was: Re: November PUG is up

I think Derek Jarman made people here aware of the strange beauty of Dungeness
so it’s good to know that his cottage was saved for the nation (by me, among
many others) earlier this year.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/jul/21/derek-jarman-prospect-cottage-dungeness-kent-garden-museum-london

That whole area has the remote bleak beauty of flat coastal landscapes. Very
appealing.

I found this article yesterday about the railway tracks:

110 is about the same size as 4/3rds so the equivalent would be 140mm, give or

That rather depends on what happens to the profits. In the UK the National
Lottery funds a large number of causes that I consider to be good ones, so I
buy a ticket every week by direct debit, not in the expectation of winning many
tons of money that I wouldn’t know what to do with, but because it’s another
way to support these things, and I get the occasional thrill of winning a small
amount of money - £60- being the most so far, although I do know some who has
won tens of thousands, and deserved it.

I’ve been following him and his brother Peter on Instagram as they’ve posted
from Paris and New York. Peter has had a number of exhibitions of his lockdown
work, including Les Rencontres d’Arles. It has been fascinating to see how they
develop the pictures posted on Instagram into a coherent body, and how much
time and effort goes into their work, not the least of which is how they
interact so successfully with strangers on the street as well as professionals
in the front line.

Good stuff. Nothing like a bit of wobbly flesh for scaring the viruses away.

During the strictest lockdown in London my regular weekend bike ride took me up
to Muswell Hill then downhill past Ally Pally where those photos were shot.
With no traffic around at the time I could hit 40mph going down the hill, but
you have to be careful because there are trafic lights at the bottom, and you
never know, even in lockdown...

Typ262.

Nope. No User Profile on mine. Perhaps it’s one of those typ260s they sell

I do intend to buy one of the LCD-less Ms at some point within the next few
months, one that has the same dimensions as my M3 rather than the thicker body.
But first I have to sell my M8, and my typ2x2, and the 21/2.8 Elmarit-M, and
the Voigtlander 75/1.8. And whatever remains of my soul.

Less is more. Nevermore. Elsinore. Excelsior!

I’ve just had a quick look through the menu of my typ242 and I can’t see the
export option - enlighten me, please!

Mind you, the M menus and settings are so simple it’s no big deal rebuilding
them, unlike the Olympus and Fuji, which are a UI nightmare.

I guess on the Leicas which don’t have a TV on the back it’s fairly crucial to
be able to set things up with your smartphone.

Lovely - and I think you may be right about that Fuji!

Here’s the MX I bought new in 1979, gave up smoking for a year to pay for it. I
don’t have the 50/1.7 lens it came with - that was among a ton of stuff that
was stolen in 2000. That’s the 40mm pancake lens. I also have a 24-35/3.5 Lens
and a Winder MX. When I got the stuff out just now to take the picture the
wonder started whirring at me, which was a surprise as I didn’t realise it had
batteries in. I took them out - they are dated Mar 2002... now in the battery
recycling jar. The strap is an LX strap, the tripod an original Marchioni.

Re: OT: Questions for PDML members from the UK

2020-09-07 Thread Bob Pdml
Cornwall is a duchy. Owned by Prince Charles. It has never been an independent
country, but the people are essentially descended from the pre-Anglo-Saxon
population and related to other populations from the so-called Celtic fringe -
the Atlantic seaboard. One of my brothers lives in Cornwall. Some of his
Cornish friends are fiercely anti-English, but apparently not enough to learn
the Cornish language, which seems to be dying out. A part of Brittany is called
Cornouaille and was settled by people from Cornwall - many of the place names
are very obviously from the same language. The Cornish and Breton flags are
very similar, if not identical.

Boris is playing brinkmanship with the EU. I’d say the chances of him still
being PM this time next year are pretty slim.

Re: PESO: Autumn Crocus

2020-09-06 Thread Bob Pdml
The autumn crocus is the source of the drug colchicine, used to treat acute
gout since the time of the ancient Egyptians.

I have some in my medicine cabinet from my last series of gout attacks about 3
years ago. It is highly toxic and there is a limit to how many tablets you can
take in a week before you have to have several weeks of not taking any, so
you’d better hope for some relief from the pain before you reach the limit.

Eating the plant can cause multiple organ failure quite quickly and there is no
antidote.

There are a bunch of wildfires from the lightning in my general area.
Since people will often ask about excitement that’s 100 miles away, folks
are being evacuated about 10 miles north of me:

I’ve been hearing fire trucks going past my house for a couple hours, but
apart from smoke that’s about all the effect it has on me right now.

So, at the moment, there’s nothing major to worry about.

Maybe. It’s only a week.

There are all sorts of strategies for coping, many of which Ralf has outlined,
and most of the world copes without AC. We lived in hot and humid countries for
years without AC. If it’s your normal climate you, er, acclimatise...

It’s not our normal climate here and right-thinking people should be horrified
at the idea of using AC in this country. If that seems like the solution then
something is going very wrong indeed and rather than adding to the problem we
need to be looking at other ways to cope with it until we have reversed the
problem. That means adapting our homes and the way we live by taking lessons
from the people whose normal climate this is and who have developed techniques
over millennia for dealing with it.

But in the short term yes, maybe you just have to put up with it for a week.

Take the yacht out...

That’s why the world’s going to hell in a handbasket.

Everyone’s an exception and it’s everyone else who has to make sacrifices.

Tragedy of the commons.

Thanks. I think we all feel the same way on both sides. Some of my Francophile
friends are over there now and are prepared to put up with the quarantine when
