Re: Stupid Adobe Question
Bill queried: > > My stupid question is this: Are the versions of Photoshop and Lightroom > in the 10 dollar offer the same ones in the 31 dollar offer? The software is completely the same. The features and frequency of updates are also the same. I subscribe to the ten buck option because (a) I'm cheap, and (b) I don't need any off-site space. Most of the other odds and ends in the "Photoshop" plan is in the $10 one too, like Portfolio (I don't use it), and Fonts (I should be using it). The Creative Cloud application controls what is installed or not, and lets you downgrade to prior versions if something fucks up. (I am currently running one Ps version behind because they broke some crucial plugins with the latest.) Once I got over my snit with the subscription concept, I'm very happy with the CC package. Recent features in Ps and Lr are the bees knees and save me huge amounts of work, especially things like cloning out random distracting objects. I'm also really digging LUTs for colour grading in both Lr and Ps. (You can make a fancy LUT in Ps then import it into Lr and avoid sending shots out to Ps purely to tone them if you have a batch to do. It's a bit involved, but worth the effort in many cases.) Re: PESO x 2 - two bests
Thank you very much, Bulent, for this appreciation and critique! An interesting coincidence to me that you feel fragility in the figure in nude study. She was 3 or 4 months pregnant when we shot, and beginning to show. I was very much aiming for a painterly look in that too. I arranged all the background elements, and chose a high ISO and wide-open aperture for softness. BTW, I failed to mention that I did all post-processing in Lightroom. Mosty minor slider tweaks. The negative space above? I was just feeling it. :-) I have been studying Arnold Newman and designers like Paul Rand and trying to get a better feel for a wider PoV and including more background. This shot just suggested to me to open it up more and leave space above. My tendency has always been to crowd the subject in the frame; I'm pushing back against that. But I guess it depends on the disposition of the person as well. I was a computer hobbyist before I entered the workforce, first as a hardware engineer, later transitioning into software. Throughout my career I kept on tinkering with hobby side projects, folding many of them back into my professional work. Of course to the untrained eye it appeared that I was merely a workaholic doing 12 to 14-hour days for 30 years. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: What do you think about the future of Pentax "flagship" APS-C-camera line?
When I began my career in 1978 I worked for one of the then Big Three word processor companies (AES Data, Canada's answer to Wang and IBM) and the phrase "paperless office" was widely heard. Paper would soon be obsolete. When I wrapped up my full time career in 2010 I worked in the Toronto office of a San Francisco wireless firm (Soma Networking) and was located not far from a big honking multi copier/printer (possibly a Ricoh) that churned out documents all the time. This despite that all meetings featured a table full of laptops and tablets. "Paperless office". Dan, my portfolio site (Photoshelter) seems to be really confused by your browser and mistakenly assuming it is a small mobile screen. But then it uses a huge font for the title (?!?). Re: iPESO: Doorbell View
This could be the start of a whole new photo category. :-) I installed a Nest Hello doorbell button a few weeks ago, but the shots from it are just of our boring front walk. It's pretty cool though; I haven't tried this feature yet but it's supposed to be able to recognize familiar faces and distinguish between friends/family and strangers. I mainly wanted to know when packages are delivered and to be sure that they aren't stolen. On Sat, Nov 10, 2018 at 9:36 AM Daniel J. Re: Nuts to Adobe
Godfrey, okay: strike "regular Lightroom user". I really meant "regular Lightroom user who uses Photoshop extensively as an external editor" anyway. But Jostein was looking for a replacement for Photoshop as an external editor for Lightroom, presumably to do more than just add a border. I suggest that as it does not save the full state of the file, Affinity fails to meet that criteria. If flattening the TIFF is not an issue, then Affinity may well be fine for him, and others. And yes, I did indeed decide to stick with using Photoshop in my workflow. I went ahead and upgraded to CC after many years of waiting for somebody to come up with a usable (for me) alternative to Adobe's stuff. No, it doesn't, and that's the essential problem. Affinity cannot create a layered TIFF like Photoshop. It flattens the TIFF so all your intermediate editing steps -- the layers -- are gone forever. As one reviewer pointed out you can save the edited file separately from within Affinity as a proprietary Affinity file but Lightroom can't manage that as an asset, so it can (and will likely) go astray. > Jostein the slow learner... Re: Nuts to Adobe
No, no. I was evaluating AP as a possible substitute for Photoshop. So Edit-in-Affinity must be able to accept a TIFF file, edit that into a layered TIFF, then write it back to Lightroom, just like Photoshop does. Ie: the workflow expected by your regular Lightroom user. It can't do that. So ... /next/. Re: Nuts to Adobe
Godfrey, then it must have been a year ago then. They were pushing the impending release with a big social media and blogging sites campaign and urging folks to give the beta a test as it was to be released shortly. You don't _make_ a layered file in Lightroom. You receive one back into Lightroom from an external editor, like Photoshop. Example: starting in Lightroom with a DNG file in your library, you invoke Edit-in Photoshop. That sends the file to Photoshop where it appears as a single layer in a freshly opened file. You edit this. Create some adjustment layers. Now Save. That sends the edited copy of the file back to Lightroom as a layered TIFF where it appears in the catalog as a new file. I stack that with the original for less confusion. If you re-edit that edited TIFF you will find that the entire thing is there intact with all layers, meta info, etc. Clear? Re: Nuts to Adobe
I'm certainly willing to update my opinion about Affinity's capabilities, but I was unable to complete a review of it myself when I tested their final beta a couple of years ago. The first issue I had was completely wacky colour shifts when I imported a file from Lightroom. I assume they have fixed that by now. But the utter deal-killer was that although you can configure it as an external editor to Lightroom and it will import a layered TIFF, it cannot write a layered TIFF (or a PSD) back to Lightroom. So if I used it as an external editor I lost all my carefully constructed layers when the file was flattened to save it back. That is 100% useless to me as my files often make a few round trips to the external editor while I make revisions, or in the case of long retouch, save checkpoints or continue editing later on. This is till the case as far as I can tell from googling. I can say with assurance that they do not. The majority of these products are going after the Lightroom market, many with the addition (illusion) of layers. You will not find the rich feature set and general image processing capabilities of even Ps CS2 in them. And if you have any plugins, like Nik, they won't work. Little finesses like "flow" for brushes is missing from the only app I know that manages to clone many (though not even 25% of) Photoshop's features: The Gimp. I searched for and tested a lot of software after Adobe went subscription with the goal of replacing Lr and Ps. I gave up. I need the power of both of them. If you don't then I suggest trying The Gimp as it's free, multi-platform, and quite powerful. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Nuts to Adobe
Jostein, I just have to say it: the best advanced editor available is Photoshop. After recent Mac OS X updates started to erode my CS5 enough to be troublesome, I finally gave in and subscribed to CC. It has been, for me, worthwhile. Lightroom integrates better with Ps, both are speedier, and Ps has seen some feature additions that are extremely useful and powerful for me. Time saved in retouching; more convincing and accurate editing -- especially in the area of selections -- and much better handling of huge 645Z files, for example. The Content Aware healing brush is magical. I was one of the last holdouts. My copy of CS5 and my old Lightroom owed me nothing. I strongly dislike the subscription model still, but I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my face. Being a self-righteous dogmatic curmudgeon has its downsides. Non-compete contract clauses are usually only for a year or two. You couldn't enforce one beyond that as employment lawyers would successfully show they impair the executive's ability to make a living. Now, maybe they had stock options that vested over 5 or 6 years. That's kind of long too (3 years is usual) but possible considering the amount of money involved. I'm surprised they lasted 6 years at FB. Entrepreneurial types are generally allergic to large corporations, and dealing with FB "optimizing" the app in order to clobber the competition, Snapchat, and fine tuning the thing to maximize ad revenue at the expense of it being, well, actually interesting, would frustrate anyone. Re: OT: Instagram
The encouragement is not so much from "Instagram the app" -- into which you can toss whatever you darned well please -- but "Instagram the marketing vehicle and popularity contest". It is touted by enthusiasts as a way to get your work noticed (and so make yourself more marketable), but to do that you find you have to create work that is popular on IG, and that leads to a silly circular feedback loop with everyone producing the same muck. If you just want to share your work conveniently with a few friends and family, it works just fine for that. If you use Lightroom, consider using the LR/Instagram plugin as it eases a few of IG's annoyances. Most notably, it enables you to post directly from Lightroom, and it solves the IG stupid arbitrary crops by letterboxing. https://www.lrinstagram.com/ On Sun, Sep 23, 2018 at 2:10 PM Daniel J. But, apart from > ease of use and image quality, that looks like it could be fun. Instax square film is 2.4 inches on a side. They claim that light loss is 3 stops so you treat the ISO 800 film as ISO 100 to get correct exposure. The attachment also flips the image because of that internal mirror. The front surface mirror is supposed to be super reflective and clear. The internal optics limits max aperture to f/4. I have to wonder about the viewfinder issue, too, Larry. Looks like a problem to me. Cute but pointless, imho. Well, perhaps also in a brightly sunlit studio, which I have encountered a few times. The 645Z's 1/125th sec sync speed makes that tricky sometimes. HSS is mainly of use outside in the sun with underpowered flashes. Using efficient modifiers (read: silver coated) and at least 500 watt-second strobes you can overpower the sun without needing HSS. There are 3rd party HSS solutions out there that work with Pentax. I'll leave it to you to Google it up. :-) They all sound iffy and klugey to me and I decided to pass on the whole thing. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Studio Strobes for Pentax
I am using a fairly extensive Paul C Buff kit, John. I have four 640 watt-seconds Einsteins. I have a bunch of PCB modifiers including the 5' strips, a 5' silver parabolic (PLM), beauty dish, reflectors, barn doors, and grids. I also have a Vagabond battery inverter so I can go on location for a few hours if I need to. Also useful for firing a strobe from outside through a window to mimic sunlight in a room. I trigger, control, and meter the whole shebang with the Cyber Commander and CyberSync receivers. I can meter my lights individually, in groups or all together then remotely adjust power levels also individually or groups/all no matter if they are twelve feet up in an umbrella on a boom. It's way better than climbing a ladder or dropping the boom down to make adjustments. The light meter is builtin to the Cyber Commander. It's the niftiest setup around and AFAICT unique to Buff. The rental studio I work from is a Paul C Buff shop, very handily. They have a ton of modifiers that I don't, like 4x8' softboxes, 7' silver umbrella, 5' octas, more barn doors and gels, etc. And more lights. Second last shoot I needed five lights so I used my four and rented one. If you want to start small I would recommend you get one of their CyberBees. LED modelling lamp also works for video. Very cost-effective. Modifiers can be sourced on eBay if you really want to save money. Anything that fits Balcar or Alien Bees will work. BTW, I now and then use my gear at home in the family room as a makeshift studio for headshots and portraits. You don't need to get fancy to have a "studio". One light, a hunk of 5' wide seamless taped to the wall, a DIY reflector (foamcore or styofoam insulation from the big box hardware store). My local studio gives me seamless paper when the roll hits 12 feet left because it's no use to him then. (Needs to be enough to create a sweep.) Re: Studio Strobes for Pentax
John, assuming you mean "what options do you have for using his gear during the course", your Pentax gear will work just fine with the Profoto kit, fully manual operation only. Neither xTTL or HSS features will work but that's 100% okay since Tony Corbell is an old school guy and he teaches flash metering and manual strobe settings. The Air remotes allow manual triggering and full remote control -- on/off, power levels, modelling lamps, etc. -- from your hotshoe. Like Larry, I have no use for xTTL in studio strobes. It relies too much on luck; it meters by reflected light while I believe strongly in measuring incident light; and subject movement within the studio space can alter the results. HSS has its uses like overpowering the sun outdoors, but I'm okay with using an ND filter instead. If you are looking for gear recommendation for you to buy afterward, I have opinions there too. :-) On Sun, Jun 10, 2018 at 8:48 PM, John wrote: > I'm taking a class on lighting this week with Tony Corbell. My intent was for the model's shape and pose to be largely in silhouette and have the spotlight pick out her eyes. So the darkness is intentional. -- -bmw -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
PESO - lady in red
This for me is a rare image on two counts: subject is clothed, and the shot is unretouched. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bruce_m_walker/41480140124/lightbox/ I wanted to try out something more sophisticated than I have tried before. I put together projected shapes (a white horizontal bar), gels (red and blue from left and right), and a all-white background. That required five strobes -- one more than I even own so I had to rent one. I carefully metered out everything, I let the makeup artist have all the time she needed and the result is I was able to get this shot with just slight Lightroom slider adjustments, mainly exposure and contrast. Model is Muirina Fae from Victoria BC. She is wearing a red latex catsuit, bustier and cincher from Artifice Clothing. 645z, 90mm/2.8 at f/8, 1/125th sec, 200 iso.
