John Sessoms wrote on Fri, 25 May 2012 11:00:36 -0700 I do not have a clue what the problem was. I shut everything down and crawled under the desk to get to the router. I swapped cables around so I could reposition the router up on top of the desk so I won't have to crawl under there to get to it next time things get screwy. I restarted everything in sequence - this computer, NAS, Laptop, PhotoShop computer ... and everything is forgiven. They're all mapping the NAS, and they're all printing to the network printer, each of the 3 computers can see the shared folders on the other two computers and they can all reach the internet. I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow. Re: New lens prices
Bryan Jacoby wrote on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 07:39:07 -0700 So, how 'bout them new lens prices?!? I have been pretty impressed with what I've seen in the Ricoh era (yes, I think the K-01 is a great idea) and therefore I've been optimistic about the future. But these new lens prices seem, shall we say, less than well-considered. I guess I can understand a pricing policy designed to give bricks-and-morter shops a chance to compete, but I don't see how it's necessary to nearly double the price of some lenses to do that. Sorry, but I don't see people lining up to pay $1500 for a DA* 16-50mm. Can anybody explain this to me? On the bright side, the price of the FA 31mm Limited hasn't changed, and in comparison it now seems like a heck of a deal. How could I not buy one? I won't try to defend this price increase, as i don't know Pentax' cost structure, but I would wager that their new Ricoh masters took a look at their costs and P/L before deciding to make this move. If you look at Ricoh's existing product prices you see that they price for a niche market, and Pentax has been drifting in that direction for years. That said, if you enjoy reading posters frothing at the mouth (pen?) and having a hissy fit over this issue, take a gander at the Pentax DSLR Forum on DPR… Regards, Jim -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Working condition is unknown; cosmetically it should clean up pretty well, judging from the iPhone pix. There are 3 lenses, a 28mm Hektor, a 35mm Elmar, and a 135mm Hektor. How much are these likely to be worth, and apart from Fleabay what is the best way for her to sell them? A lot depends on whether or not they are in working condition, so she really needs to have somebody with Leica experience take a look at them. If by chance they are near-mint then their value to a collector could be much greater than if they are clean users. If they are in good cosmetic and working condition (clean users), I'd estimate $250-300 for the IIIa body. I don't have a good feel for the two wide angle lenses but the Hektor 135 is probably worth $100-150. If pressed I'd guess that the two wides are worth a bit more than that. If you don't use FleaBay I'd suggest listing them at RangefinderForum.com and GetDPI.com, as many Leicaphiles hang out there. Re: OT: This could change Everything !
Daniel J. Matyola wrote on Thu, 22 Sep 2011 15:08:40 -0700: TV and the papers are full of celebrity news. This is news that matters: GENEVA (AP) - A pillar of physics - that nothing can go faster than the speed of light - appears to be smashed by an oddball subatomic particle that has apparently made a giant end run around Albert Einstein's theories. Scientists at the world's largest physics lab said Thursday they have clocked neutrinos traveling faster than light. That's something that according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity - the famous E (equals) mc2 equation - just doesn't happen. The feeling that most people have is this can't be right, this can't be real, said James Gillies, a spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The organization, known as CERN, hosted part of the experiment, which is unrelated to the massive $10 billion Large Hadron Collider also located at the site. Gillies told The Associated Press that the readings have so astounded researchers that they are asking others to independently verify the measurements before claiming an actual discovery. They are inviting the broader physics community to look at what they've done and really scrutinize it in great detail, and ideally for someone elsewhere in the world to repeat the measurements, he said Thursday. Scientists at the competing Fermilab in Chicago have promised to start such work immediately. It's a shock, said Fermilab head theoretician Stephen Parke, who was not part of the research in Geneva. It's going to cause us problems, no doubt about that - if it's true. The Chicago team had similar faster-than-light results in 2007, but those came with a giant margin of error that undercut its scientific significance. Other outside scientists expressed skepticism at CERN's claim that the neutrinos - one of the strangest well-known particles in physics - were observed smashing past the cosmic speed barrier of 186,282 miles per second (299,792 kilometers per second). University of Maryland physics department chairman Drew Baden called it a flying carpet, something that was too fantastic to be believable. CERN says a neutrino beam fired from a particle accelerator near Geneva to a lab 454 miles (730 kilometers) away in Italy traveled 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light. Scientists calculated the margin of error at just 10 nanoseconds, making the difference statistically significant. But given the enormous implications of the find, they still spent months checking and rechecking their results to make sure there was no flaws in the experiment. We have not found any instrumental effect that could explain the result of the measurement, said Antonio Ereditato, a physicist at the University of Bern, Switzerland, who was involved in the experiment known as OPERA. The researchers are now looking to the United States and Japan to confirm the results. A similar neutrino experiment at Fermilab near Chicago would be capable of running the tests, said Stavros Katsanevas, the deputy director of France's National Institute for Nuclear and Particle Physics Research. The institute collaborated with Italy's Gran Sasso National Laboratory for the experiment at CERN. Katsanevas said help could also come from the T2K experiment in Japan, though that is currently on hold after the country's devastating March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Scientists agree if the results are confirmed, that it would force a fundamental rethink of the laws of nature. Einstein's special relativity theory that says energy equals mass times the speed of light squared underlies pretty much everything in modern physics, said John Ellis, a theoretical physicist at CERN who was not involved in the experiment. It has worked perfectly up until now. He cautioned that the neutrino researchers would have to explain why similar results weren't detected before. This would be such a sensational discovery if it were true that one has to treat it extremely carefully, said Ellis. Ellis is right - extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Let's let the dust settle before we rewrite the physics books. Re: Pentax SMC DA 18-135mm, anyone?
Christine Nielsen wrote on Sat, 11 Jun 2011 08:49:30 -0700 Hello all, Curious if anyone has tried or been tempted by this one? I'll be traveling to Barcelona in a couple of weeks, and am experiencing a pre-trip enablement crisis of sorts. Last summer, I packed light for our summer vacation, with only one 17-70 lens, and I kind of regretted it. So, this summer, my original plan was to bring along my k-7, the sigma 17-70 lens, the pentax 50-135, and 50/1.4. But, I wonder how much patience I'll have for lens-swapping lens-schlepping on the family vaca, and maybe the 18-135 (for day), plus the 50/1.4 (evening wear) is a better solution. Then again, why own the lovely 50-135, and not bring it? OTOH, I bet the 18-135 is a fine substitute for the sigma, though not as fast by a stop. My dilemma gets down to the question of the travel lens... assuming you are not on photo safari, does it make sense to have a super-zoom for travel, and leave the super-nice lens at home? Security, packing light, ease of use all factor in... but, also image quality... what say you? I have a copy of this lens - bought it used for a good price as I wanted a WR travel zoom. I found it to be very sharp in the center of the image but a bit weak in the corners, and the IQ drops off at the long end as you might expect. I think that the Photozone review is too harsh, at least for my copy. All said, it's fine for my intended purpose but certainly below Pentax's DA 50-135 in IQ. If you're taking snaps it will be fine; for critical work where edge-to-edge sharpness is needed it probably is not what you are looking for. Re: OT: Possible enablement - Pentax binoculars?
Stan Halpin wrote on Sat, 16 Apr 2011 20:25:56 -0700 Meg and I will probably be buying at least one pair of binoculars for birding. Something in the $250-500 range - i.e., quite a bit better than the $40-50 compact everyday binocs we have now, but not anything in the $1000+ serious birder category. My inclination to brand loyalty tells me to buy Pentax, all other things equal. But the few reviews I have found (e.g., in Cornell's birding magazine) put Pentax toward the bottom of the list. And I don't want to buy a clearly inferior product just for the Pentax name. So, anyone here with experience with Pentax binoculars? Can you provide any comparisons with other brands in the same price range? Can you convince me that I should (or should not) go for a Pentax? Note that I am not that concerned with the price as long as it is in my general price range; if there is a Pentax model that costs $499 that is equivalent in features and performance to something else that costs $349, I would probably buy Pentax. I just don't want to pay the same or more for the Pentax if it is clearly inferior. And I don't have any local stores where I can go and see and try out any of those I am thinking about. I am also toying with the notion of a spotting scope, and Pentax has an eyepiece adapter that converts their scopes to a 780mm or 1000mm f/12 K-mount lens. But, again, the reviews put Pentax spotting scopes toward the bottom of the list. Anyone here with experience with this class of product? Any information, opinions (informed or otherwise), pointers to good web resources, etc. would be greatly appreciated! Stan, I bought a pair of Pentax DCF SP 8x43 binoculars which were in your price range several years ago and have found them very satisfactory. I did some web research and found a site with useful info and reviews: http://www.birdwatching.com/index.html I didn't buy from that site; found the model I wanted for less at another online store. Re: Some thought on Craftsmanship vs. Professionalism
Stan Halpin wrote on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 20:24:47 -0700 Jim, I read this piece last night (after W. Robb kindly pointed out how I needed to access the site. Duh.) My recollection/interpretation of the key points the author was making is as follows: a. Close enough is good enough. Set the camera for the conditions and take photos already. b. Intuition is better than logic. Well, he doesn't actually say that, but the whole lens-design bit about how good experienced lens designers can do better than a computer program is in that same vein. I agree with (a). I think we all (except Bob W. and Frank) sometimes let ourselves be driven by a fascination with the electromechanical gee-whiziness of our cameras, and we strive for vanishingly small degrees of precision in aspects like exposure, color balance, focus etc., thereby losing some ability to see, to visualize, and to create an image that we and others will care about. Trust me; the research on cognition clearly shows that we have limited capacity, and attending to technical details must diminish the extent to which we are attending to the image as image. I disagree with (b). Intuitive decisions are no better than logical decisions; see Chapter 7 in my 2009 book on developing leaders for links to relevant research. I would agree that an experienced designer is far more likely to generate an innovative solution than an inexperienced designer, but the tools they use will have no bearing on the outcome. A designer who has grown up on CAD/CAM and who is good at his job is just as likely to be good as is a designer who grew up grinding lenses by hand using polishing cloths made from passenger pigeon skins. Actually, the modern designer is likely to have an edge since he can try more iterations and hence has more trial-and-error learning opportunities. My general assessment is that the author is a romantic, yearning for the good old days when life was simple. It is unfortunate that he picks on a particular consumer product as the focus of his discussion, because it leads people to talk about the goodness and badness of Leicas more than the merits of his apparent assumption that things used to be simple and are no longer so. BTW, i recently had my father-in-law's M-2 refurbished, torn shutter curtain repaired, etc. It sits here on the shelf by my desk. Every time I pick it up I am surprised by what a large heavy unwieldy camera it is. It may be simple, but it is pretty primitive. For usability I'll take a Minox EL, Olympus OM-1, Pentax ME-Super, LX, or MZ-S any day. And of course the current generation DSLRs provide so much more functionality than the Leicas ever had. And they allow us to take pretty good images as long as we remember that close enough is good enough. Thanks for your thoughtful comments Stan. Most of us here aren't familiar with Puts' position as THE technical guru of Leicaland. It's more than a little ironic to read his words decrying technology in favor of intuition when technology and measurement are the core of his approach to reviewing Leica lenses and camera bodies. Maybe he's getting a little grumpy with the passing years... Godfrey DiGiorgi wrote on Wed, 13 Apr 2011 15:25:25 -0700 LOL ... I have never heard Pentax referred to as the Japanese Leica. I read it somewhere, probably Modern Photography way back in the day when Herbert Keppler was still active. Leica is most reknowned for its lenses and rangefinder cameras and Pentax—the name itself was derived from the pentaprism used in SLRs. Erwin Puts ... Well, his article would be a heck of a lot more readable and sensible if he learned how to use paragraphs to structure his thoughts. He rambles. Does he ever. Trying to follow his thoughts is a real challenge. His camera and lens reviews are equally turgid... But there is often some gold buries in the dross. I'm in the middle of re-reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance right now. I read it first in '76 or so, again about '81, and with all the water under the bridge since, reading it now points out some very interesting fallacies in the logic presented as Phaedrus' hunt for the 'ghost of rationality'. Some fundamental premises seem just plain wrong to me now. But, achingly clawing my way through this mass of text, I do agree with Puts' fundamental premise, although the words he uses are strangely construed. In the modern world of equipment über alles, too much weight is lent to numbers without a shred of intelligible discourse given to the why of their primacy. Everything is opinion, belief and a faith-healer's trust that numbers don't lie. Well, the numbers are just numbers: they're evidence, not truth. Interpreting the numbers is where art and understanding lies. Just like we can confuse ourselves and think we are increasing our understanding when we banter on about how photosites work, photon counting, etc, the truth is that very little of this has much to do with photography and a lot to do with technology and engineering. Being able to stand back from the technology, see how the equipment behaves and then bending it to our purpose of producing photographs, not theorizing about the engineering of better equipment, is often lost. Equipment cannot make photographs. Only people can. People with eyes, sensitivity, and skill to know how to work the equipment. Truly ...equipment often gets in the way of Photography. Well said, Godders. I'd like to hear more comments in this vein from other regulars here. Pentax/CRIS Customer Service
I documented my stupid actions which resulted in damage to my K-5 here: http://forums.dpreview.com/...forums/read.asp?forum=1036message=37414995 I sent the camera to Pentax-CRIS for repair and have been following the repair status on their website. Their estimate of $250 to make things right made me cringe! Today I got a phone call out of the blue from Pentax-CRIS advising that upon inspection of the camera, they found sensor stains, and will send me a new replacement camera at no charge! (I asked them to do that pesky focusing screen replacement for me on the new body, so I will have that cost to bear, but what a great outcome for me!) Interestingly, I had tested my K-5 shortly after the sensor stain issue blew up and did not find any evidence of that problem. Evidently they can do a more thorough inspection job in their shop than we can do in the field. Don't let anyone convince you that Pentax USA doesn't support their customers. I've made several lens and camera service work requests of them over the last 10 years, and they have (almost) always come through for me. I'm sure that some of you (are you reading this, Joe Tainter?) have not had the same good results as I have, but I can only report based on my own experience. (snip) Anyway, things may have changed in the past year. From experience I strongly recommend you find one with LED backlighting whatever you do. LED has more even illumination towards the corners, does not require warm-up before colour rendition is stable, and consumes less power than do CCFL. However if you find you have to go with a CCFL based screen because of other model specifications, make sure you find one with at least two tubes to get decent brightness. The recent Lenovos like W400 for example, have rather weak illumination. Mark (and Jostein), things HAVE changed in the MacBook Pro lineup. Christine Aguila wrote on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 00:41:46 -0800, Hi Everyone: In early Oct, my husband I took a drive down Rush St.; I hadn't been there for years. I tended bar on Rush st. for several years at a place called The Hangge Uppe, and it's still there, though much has changed on the street. Anyway, I took this pic--a real drive-by, though I was stopped at a stop sign. The original pic is a mess--at 2500 ISO it's grainier than an Iowa silo, and it has enough of those pink blue artifacts to give a digital archeologist an orgasm. I think those 3 lights in the background biased the metering causing the original pic to underexpose--hence the grain/artifact issue when trying to brighten it up. Since Oct, I've been rendering the heck out of it, and tonight I think I've finally settled on this rendering. Interestingly though, just now I printed this pic on some Illford Gold Fiber Silk, 8 1/2 x 11, and it looks A LOT less grainer than this digital version. http://tinyurl.com/ygzuu7m http://www.caguila.com/caguila/rushstcouple/content/20091010__IGP5336_large.html Like Frank, I think that this is a wonderful street shot, with plenty to study and consider. Thanks for sharing. One tiny cavil - I find the small silver of the scene which is the right of the lamppost distracting, and would suggest that you consider cropping it out. I did, and liked it. Re: PESOs - Basel
Rick Womer wrote on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 18:52:37 -0800 Zipping across the Atlantic and back six months or so... (I have =lots= of photos to sort!) Two from an April day in Basel: http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=10204517 and http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=10204552size=lg Sorry for the late reply; I just saw your post. I really enjoyed your entire album of Basel photos. Years ago I used to visit Ciba's RD facility in Klein-Basel, and we often went on walking tours of the old city center at the end of the day. Your images included many familiar scenes and brought back pleasant memories. Now I'm inspired to dig through my old slide cassettes to find my own Basel photos. Thanks for posting! Re: Batteries for *ist-D and other Pentax cameras that take AA or CR-V3
John Sessoms wrote on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 06:10:41 -0800 Thought I'd open this in a fresh thread specifically about batteries for earlier Pentax DSLRs. I got an idea from the discussion of NiMH and Lithium AA batteries in the other thread, and wanted to follow up on it. There are no Lithium Ion AA batteries, but the *ist-D can also use CR-V3 batteries and those ARE available as Litium Ion rechargeables. Plus, they're 3V(+) rather than the 2.5V(-) you get with a pair of NiMH AAs. Has anyone used these? The only drawback I foresee is there doesn't seem to be a charger that can do 2 of these at once. Even better would be a charger that could do 4 at once, since the *ist-D/BG-1 takes 4 of them is you load it with CR-V3s. John, I've used several sets of Delkin rechargeable CR-3Vs in my *ist- D and grip with no problems other than a relatively low number of shots per charge (150-250). I found the focusing to be snappier than with NiMH rechargeables. When the alarms went out about excessive voltage I measured mine and found them to run about 3.5 volts, higher than the Pentax spec for the *ist-D, but as I said, I had no problems. Battery reliability was not great - several batteries failed over the years. I no longer use my *ist-D regularly so I've changed to the non- rechargeable CR-V3 batteries, which seem to have a very long shelf life. Re: ARGGGGHHH!!
paul stenquist wrote on Sun, 01 Nov 2009 10:24:20 -0800: I installed OSX 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on my iMac yesterday. Turns out the driver for the Epson 2400 won't allow advanced PhotoShop printing choices with 10.6, despite Epson's claims that their driver is compatible. No cure that I can find. I may have to reinstall 10.5. Argggh! If I've learned one thing in my 20+ years using Macs, it's to wait at least 6 months after a new Mac OS version is released to install it on any of my computers. Much less grief that way, and the new version is rarely so compelling that I miss out on anything great... Re: DPR review of K-7
Doug Franklin wrote on Sat, 03 Oct 2009 07:54:55 -0700 I want it for the faster AF and the faster frame rate, primarily. The bigger sensor (compared to the K10D) would be nice, but it's not critical and makes all the files bigger, and thus slower to manipulate. You don't have to cope with larger files; just set the resolution to 10MP (or even less, if you want) and image file size will be the same as with the K10D. I just bought my K-7 for $1005 with a couple of discounts, and I'm absolutely delighted with the improved handling/operation. Yes, the IQ isn't any better, but that's only part of the value proposition. Recommendations anyone? In my experience, the B+W MRC filters are a lot easier to clean than the Hoya HMC filters. hey are a little mare expensive, however. Re: OT -- Seabed Cable Damaged.
P. J. Alling wrote on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 07:38:12 -0700: It appears that Nigeria has been at least partially disconnected from the internet. I guess that explains why I'vs stopped getting offers from various government functionaries offering to make me rich. LOL! Hope that the cable remains broken for a while; it will speed up the rest of the 'net by eliminating some useless traffic. Come to think of it, I've not gotten one of those offers for over a year now. Maybe my ISP suspects that they are a scam and is blocking them... nah, they aren't that smart.
