Jostein, for some artifact from the past to be found, it takes two - it needs to survive, and someone needs to find it. Then it's more likely to be labeled as fertility token or religious sculpture. Assuming the next race will give a damn about the previous ones... Give it enough time, even our radioactive dumpster is going to disappear. LF AlunFoto escreveu: Peter, your initial argument was that few humans live where fossilisation takes place. I argue that many of our artifacts are deposited in places that do favour fossilisation. And I would say that shipwrecks in particular are prone to fossilisation because of the amount of detritus that rains down on them. Many wrecks will be covered in oxygen free mud long before they have had time to rot or rust, and then will have reasonable probability of reaching the fossil record. From echo sounding in eg. the Black Sea, we know that human artefacts are already preserved that way in the form of drowned settlements. In the Scandinavian countries, there are still untouched bronze-age burial mounds that do contain wooden ships preserved in peat, along with weaponry, jewelry and tools. In Denmark, nearly perfect specimens of stone-age people have been unearthed from marshlands which, incidentally, would also be likely candidates for future fossilisation. In short, I think you're overly pessimistic. The abundance of our species across the face of this planet is so extensive that fossilisation of enough artefacts to make a mark in history is more likely than not. Another matter is that future geologists will find sliver-thin strata in the sediments that are nearly saturated with non-natural chemical contaminants such as dioxins or moderately soluble mercury salts. And if they're lucky they'll stumble upon some very unlikely deposits of highly concentrated plutonium in concrete. That should be a good puzzle for them , but I think you know what I mean. Jostein 2009/1/19 Peter Alling : In a few million years the pyramids will be weathered to less than hillocks; iron, even stainless steel, will oxidize to dust; micro-organisms will have eaten rubber and plastic; glass will have been smoothed to pebbles; little recognizable as an artifact will remain. For example not too long ago, it seems that a couple of Ford Truck sparkplugs from the 1920's were initially misidentified as "geoids". Re: PESO - attempt at B/W conversion
Possible, previous human or non-human civilizations alike, our understanding of the past is flawed, IMHO. I wouldn't pretend to have real knowledge about the matter, but have read about some archaeological findings that were reexamined after a long time of their discovery and acquired a possible new role, a fairly advanced technological one. Like fragments of ceramic and metals that would be an ancient battery, a wooden sculpture of a stylish hawk that is said to glide as perfectly as modern scale planes, and others. Our knowledge gets thinner as we move into the past. Many things may happen in 50.000 years - many things may have happened and we may never know based on how little evidence actually survives such small (planetary scale here) time span. Just remember anything big enough to wipe out mankind probably would bring great geological changes too. That could wipe out coastlines and many important cities and structures. In low technology areas any metal get re-used as long as possible - the tools I throw away in recycle bins here in the city would be gladly forged into other utilities, in other places. Plastics and other sinthetics are harder to re-use in low tech areas, but burn rather easily. How long do you think the survivors of some really important catastrophe would take to dismantle the next abandoned small city? The kind of technology we have today was possible because lots of factors were present - and were used by some small number of specific individuals in the adequate moment. A human society could survive, being isolated and low tech enough to endure. After a time, they may even remember the giant waves, or the rains of fire, or how close they were to disappear. They would probably find unexplainable ruins, signs of former societies, and maybe even recognize those societies as human. But do you really think they would understand the difference between our banks and churches? I don't believe every toolmaker being is guaranteed to develop space travel - and after the right amount of time even our space dumpster may get cleaner. LF Bob W escreveu: Peter wrote: that one species of dinosaur was. In fossils already exist in association with stone tools. Assuming we haven't already dug them all up, if we were to disappear tomorrow I don't see any great reason why many of the fossils still in the ground shouldn't remain there for the next 65 million years. In addition, some of our artefacts are designed to last a long time. For example, the Hoover Dam is supposed to last as long as the rocks amongst which it is built. There's probably as much chance of our traces remaining for 65 million years as there was of the dinosaurs' traces lasting that long. Luiz wrote: There are lots of unexplained artifacts from pre-historic ages that suggest mankind did have a former civilization that vanished in some global catastrophe, leaving scattered groups with tales of destruction I'm late into this conversation, but from the gist of it I think people are referring to non-human civilisations. As far as prehistoric human civilisations go, there are some interesting peer-reviewed (as opposed to barking mad lunatic Graham Hancock types) books around - google Richard Rudgley, for example. He is an archaeologist who shows the transition from prehistoric hunter-gatherers to early agriculturalists. There are also many peoples (it might be a bit a a stretch to describe them as civilisations) who were destroyed by natural disasters, or barely scraped through by the skin of their teeth. By coincidence, I happened to be reading some reviews today of books about the Black Death of the 14th century. This event killed something like 30% of the population of the known world, and was described in one of the reviews as the worst natural disaster ever to strike mankind. However, that is probably not true as the Toba explosion about 74,000 years ago, which was the biggest eruption of the last 2 million years, appears to have come close to making humans extinct, reducing the population to fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs. Stephen Oppenheimer pushes this theory very interestingly in a number of his books, including Out Of Eden. Bob by flood and fire. Hey Rick... the moment I felt like using my hair long I did it - it's my hair anyway, and anyone uncapable of accepting me hairy is probably better away from me anyway. Had a few costumers eye me sideways but almost all of them accepted me after the first job. My parents reacted negatively as expected, but kept breathing as usual. No big deal. Wife didn't like it, but didn't leave - and my son gave it no great attention, just told me he did like his own hair short. Re: GESO: Kerala (was) Re: bazaar
Subash, you have some very interesting images there. The one suggestion I can think of is more attention to details. One detail that did bother me was the man in the boat - needing either a fill card or a very, very weak flash. The church, the boilers and the the boat would be my faves. The boilers could also work without the boat and the wires. The sunsets are good moments but I'd change their framing - the horizon is too close to the middle for my taste, and the one with the fishing net could possibly benefit from a slightly different position. I also liked the song, but the person in the foreground is sort of blending to the ones standing in front of him - standing just a little to the left would probably place him against the lighted floor. As they are, very interesting images that could (for my taste) be even better with minor changes. As I say that, it's not easy to compose a "grabshot", and we often have just one shot before we are noticed and the mood spoiled. Re: Resisting the Temptation of Wide-Angle (was - Panasonic G1...example photo @ ISO 1000)
William, I think this is about our "own", rather than "paid for" shots. If I include my jobs, then some 80% will fall into "tele" range, almost always with 100/ 135mm in 35mm, 120/ 150 in the Hassel. Second lens would be the 24mm for the 35mm format and the 50mm for the Hassel. I hardly used my zooms unless the photo absolutely demanded - exceptions being 35~70 2.8 (long gone) and 28~70 4.0 wich had some use in parties and events. But those were the lens required to do the job anyway - when we're asked to provide some particular view of the shoes we're doing that, even if we offer a side shot as alternative. LF William Robb escreveu: - Original Message - From: "Anthony Farr" Subject: RE: Resisting the Temptation of Wide-Angle (was - Panasonic G1...example photo @ ISO 1000) I'm not claiming that wide-angle shots are inferior. Some shots can only be made with a wide lens and many photographers are skilled and expressive with them. My own experience is that my photographs are better when I use the longest lens that will suffice. Sometimes that will still be a wide lens, but in future I'll resist the temptation to pursue a wide view for its own sake. In my professional years I found that a wide lens was handy for getting into the front rank of a media event and still being able to frame the shot. In a crowded room I could grab a reasonably large group from only a metre or two away with my venerable M 24~35 (shooting film). Landscapes and industrial scenes often needed my widest lens (15mm at work, 17mm in my personal kit)to encompass the client's brief. My current taste is for a tighter view. If possible I'll back up as much as I'm able and shoot as long as I can. I simply prefer the aesthetics of the longer lens for now. I find for myself, that if I am doing a paid shoot, I, of course, grab whichever lens is required, and often that is a very wide angle, but if I am pleasure shooting, I tend towards standard to short telephoto more than anything else. One of the things I like about digital is that the plethora of slightly wide angle focal lengths from my 35mm film days have now become standards to short telephotos. When I was shooting 35mm, I always wanted a 60mm lens. Re: Resisting the Temptation of Wide-Angle (was - Panasonic G1 ... example photo @ ISO 1000)
Guess every story has at least two sides... The first lens I bought came with the Km body (1976), and I made lots and lots of pics with the 50mm 1.4 before I bought a 28mm and a 135mm - and discovered I was often too wide or too narrow and had to use the 28 and crop. Using dad's cameras was a little different - I very often carried only the 35mm and the 90mm. So far, and assuming 35mm film as default format, most of my photos fall into "normal" 28~40 range, "close enough" 50~90, with secondary categories being "far" 135~, and "wide" ~24. In particular, "wide" is where my 24mm very often is not enough. The same goes for "away", but not often. I can (if I really really need) use a 2x and once or twice I borrowed long teles - wich seem more likely to find than under-24mm lenses around here. Now I can and do try a different angle if I'm too wide for that far away pic, and if not wide enough I'll try a different angle of the story - but as soon as I can spare the cash I'll add lenses, starting from those I need most. From the pics I feel like trying, right now I'll go wider... wich is a problem since right now I need a smaller format than 35mm. Looking for the 10~20 to pair with my future digital aps Pentax may solve these problems. You have a point about most of my photos - they're likely to keep coming from the 28~135mm range (35mm equivalent). But there is always something new to try isn't it? LF Anthony Farr escreveu: The overall impression I get from the "Panasonic G1 ... example photo @ ISO 1000" discussion is that many photographers aspire to wider and yet wider fields of view. But lately I've observed that my best photographs mostly have normal to narrow fields of view. As tempting as it is to put on a wide lens and capture the whole scene, I've been striving to exercise some self discipline and choose the longest focal length that works. Sometimes I even try to use a longer lens than is comfortable, and select that small part of the scene that tells the story. A tele shot seems to have a cleanness and tightness that distils and concentrates a story. Wide shots can often capture objects unrelated to the subject that will dilute a story(expansive landscapes excepted). In a nutshell - I tend to desire wide-angle lenses, but I'm better off using normal or long lenses. Re: Panasonic G1 ... example photo @ ISO 1000
Actually, when I started using different formats I used a numeric relation. I started with 35mm, and had finished sorting out what use I had for each lens, and all the sudden those beaultiful numbers stopped making sense. Since they were numbers, its translation to their new meaning was a... give the kid a hand of applause, a number! I wonder if I had scribed "wide" "normal" and "tele 1" and "tele 2" in red to 35mm and blue to 120 format... Dad would have some harsh words to say. Since I started pestering my father to teach me to photograph, lenses come by numbers that don't describe their FOV. To understand their meanings I have to take in context the film/ sensor size. Since I can't see photo industry all the sudden change their naming, I guess we're about to continue calling lenses by its focal lenght - a number that by itself does not describe the field of view. And I fairly believe the users switching formats will rely on a numeric relation to translate their pet lenses to their new roles (this number to be named henceforth as "yellow aardvark"). Hate as I hate using words sometimes, I guess the idea of using a number to correlate the lens' focal lenght ( another number) to its role in a new format will stick around. And Jaume, you're not alone - as soon as I started to look into APS sized pentaxes, I started looking for a new wide angle. Guess what I did to translate their focal lenghts to my 35mm perspective?? The right kid gets a cookie... The same number I used when I suddenly remembered my not-so-interesting 50mm would become a so-so tele with a delightful aperture. Too bad that number is widely referred to as "crop factor". I guess "35mm-to-APS format conversion reference" would be to long to type anyway. Godfrey, I really am sorry to disagree with you - since I agree with you to some extent. Context - when it comes to lenses and quotes - makes a lot of difference. Moving from the Hasselblad to the 35mm will not transform the 150mm in a 275mm - but will change its role from a "normal" lens to a "moderate tele". And the best way to grasp that new role in a quick and dirty way will be multiplying the "reference focal number for the format" (number, usually the focal lenght) by a "groundhog rate" (yet another number, usually the ratio between formats' diagonal). Sadly this makes no allowance to the different proportions. I am saying that to get the Hasselblad the "tele look" I get from my 100mm (in 35mm format) I'll need a lens longer than that, and I can live with the 150mm since it's available, and the almost enough wide 50mm for the hassel would make a better choice for the 6x7, and the 75mm (4.5x6 format normal) would behave as a lovely wide for the 4x5. That of course assuming their image circles would cover all the formats. After some time, the numeric conversion stuff fades away - until the next format change. Do you call your 35mm camera lenses by a "crop factor" on your medium format and large format camera lenses? "Well, the crop factor for my Hasselblad 150mm lens makes it a 275mm lens for my Pentax K1000." Just nonsense. It's a 150mm lens, the focal length has a meaning with respect to the FoV *in the context* of a particular format. Period. If you need to equivalence those fields of view, call the factor by which they difference an equivalence factor, not a crop. Or just call it a telephoto lens for the 35mm camera and a portrait lens for the Hasselblad. Or simply state the FoVs: 150mm = 21/21/29 degrees horizontal/vertical/diagonal on the Hasselblad, or 13/9/16 degrees for the K1000. If that isn't informative enough, nothing is. It's a heck of a lot more informative than a "crop factor". Re: Panasonic G1 ... example photo @ ISO 1000
The problem here seems choice of words. You seem fed up with "crop factor" but willing to apply "field of view equivalence" to describe what happens when you change the size of the film or sensor used to capture the image. I enjoy very much using the 24mm, had used the 50mm only because it's bright, and 90% of my portrait was made between 100 and 135mm - in the 35mm format. The moment I buy a micro4/3 or APS sized sensor I'll have these lens I own change their role. And will have to search a new option to my wide angle needs. Call it aardvark or pink panther, there is a numeric relation that will help me translate the lens to their new use. The same as my 120 and 4x5 experiences. I hate some words myself, and don't wish to seem champion for the "crop factor" idea. But I'm willing to touch the matter of "diferent viewing angles" for the same lens used by different format cameras very often - there is always some newcomer around that may benefit of the matter. The point is, the very same lens collection we are willing to keep in use is going to assume a new dimension the moment we buy a new camera with a different size of sensor. So there is no free lunch - there is always a price to pay. Luiz Felipe Godfrey DiGiorgi escreveu: On Jan 15, 2009, at 9:02 AM, Jaume Lahuerta wrote: But, then, in m4/3, the same 24mm produces an AOV equivalent to a 48mm on film. Well, if you like this field of view, great, but, in any case, if you used to use the lens for landscapes, now you HAVE TO add a wider lens to the system and use the 24mm for other purposes. And suddenly, for some people, the 24mm won't have the same appeal that it used to, so, again for some people, the idea of buying a new system in order to be able to use the lense probably wasn't as good as it seemed. Using a 20mm focal length on FourThirds format produces the same result as using a 35mm lens on a Leica M4 and printing an 11x14 inch print with the full vertical field of view, cropping on the long axis. Remember that the FourThirds format proportion is different from 35mm's 2:3 proportion, which is not reflected in the "crop factor", based on diagonal measure. Vertical field of view equivalence is 1.83x, horizontal is 2.1x. So yes, you need a different focal length lens if you want a wider field of view. But that's SOP for anyone moving between formats. Big deal. Personally: I use adapted older lenses primarily to obtain fast, compact, well corrected portrait and tele field of view. For wide field of view, I use FourThirds lenses as they are better designed for the format. EG: The aforementioned M50/1.4 lens, fitted on the Olympus 1.4x teleconverter, produces a superb 70mm f/2 lens that is small, light, with a field of view equivalent to something in the neighborhood of a 135mm lens on 35mm film. A Color Heliar 75/2.5 will be about the same and even smaller, lighter. This FoV was always one of my best favorites when I want tele. A 135mm f/2 lens for a 35mm SLR camera is a rarity, and large/heavy/expensive. Did swear out loud in a foreign language when the hand detector pinpointed the not so empty pocket and the dangerous mini-torch. And the security did dismantle the flashlight just to make sure the batteries were permitted items. Some days we just do better staying in the bed. To get to the airport I had a row with some rent a car crew about the difference between the voucher and the final settlement of the bill (had to pay cash as they said my creditcard refused - wich it did because they already had charged the balance twice). To get to the airline counter I had to wait for the idiot in front of me in the line, who would carry 6 bags in his hand but couldn't lift one, then to board the airplane I had to come back and describe in full detail the contents of my checked bag, which displayed in the airport x-ray machine something that looked like 3 gun barrels (my tripod), some knifes (one folding pocket, one small diving) and a strange amount of books (9, sci-fi). Then I just forgot to take out the dangerous flashlight... And then had to show BR customs proof I had all that strange looking cameras and lenses before I left the country - wich I did, serial number after serial number after serial number. The gal was so disappointed she was not getting me for smuggling a full bag of photo gear she did the checklist twice. Then found the books, and tried hard to find where it said I couldn't carry 9 books from the exterior without paying some tax, or that sci-fi books in english were subversive and outlawed. I wonder if I had a Playboy magazine... Other day I asked for hand inspection of my films, heard they say yes and handed them the ziplock. Wich they promptly received and dumped trough the x-ray with impassive faces. I only received the films back to test them - would leave as a present but tought better. No, I didn't lose my temper, but my face wouldn't qualify as impassive. I never travel with exposed, not developed film - carry my unexposed out of the paper packs in a plastic bag (and often use Fuji, almost always in clear plastic containers) but sometimes we just can't get it done without some talking, and lately even talking seems ineffective. Rick, the sixpack that went into the machine was dumped after I developed one. Visible, irregular bands were evident in the unexposed film. I understand newer x-ray machines switch from low to high energy scanning modes when detect suspect metal densities. http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/tib/tib5201.shtml offers some extra info. Re: Need to buy/rent DA* 16-50
Very good advice indeed - and if you have previous access to the place, scout it and try to match your probable position to the best lens. I understand some cerimonies are rehearsed (right word???) so you may tag along and actually shoot some before the wedding - kind of a making-of. If you're alone, but the wedding is to be videotaped, you may use the second camera without flash to get a different light - you may even go high ISO if your friend likes the idea. I'd avoid using any unproved or unfamiliar gear - test and try it beforehand, setup and handling. If the cameras use different batteries and/ or cards, I use a right side/ left side pocket separation to avoid mixing them. LF Paul Stenquist escreveu: Hi John, Can't help you with the lens, but I would suggest you also bring one longer lens for the ceremony. A 135 will work or, better yet, a fast zoom in that range. Two bodies are essential. You can't risk it all on one. And you'll need a good flash and diffuser for the reception, with plenty of backup batteries. Good luck with this. Re: Costa Rican earthquake
Matter of fact I noticed the news - being slightly shaken three times made me aware of those happenings all around the world. Never been there, but have a fair idea of the hardship involved. Volcanoes are one of the deadliest wonders of this planet - and we can never be really sure of safety in those areas. Stan, at the same time at another place some kids were born, and some of them to loving and willing parents, some were getting married, others divorced, some would be helping needed strangers, others would be stealing, and so on. Small as it is, this is a whole planet. We can't help but take it one bit at a time, and with so many bits around we have to look first to those we feel closer. And since there are good things happening out there we may as well look at them too. That's just human. Don't feel like you should be fully aware of everything, everywhere - we humans just can't. Sadly, there are ones capable of celebrating human hardship based on most irrelevant differences. I quite don't think that's human. Great photos, BTW... One or both of the photos I have sent to Mark for the upcoming PDML book were taken near the La Paz "luxury eco-tourist resort" as it is being described; reports are that the resort suffered heavy damage and they are working on evacuating guests and staff members, but the process is complicated by the fact that the road is gone. What bothers me most about all of this is that, if I hadn't been there last summer, I might well not have noticed. Or if I noticed, I might well not have paid much attention. Re: PESO: Heart of Stone
Joseph, not every case of loss qualifies as tragic. Not 100m from my place there are some 30+ huts, built into the Maceio river banks, on the express purpose of being flooded in the winter. Were built for the '07~08 winter wich came rather tame, and now have all the comforts of modern life - they even achieved proper eletric supply, even if they are INTO the almost dry riverbed. From past years, come any serious rain, I expect more than 1,50m of water above their floors - maybe 2m. I wouldn't qualify those souls as "uncapable"... and whatever happens to them as tragedy. That area is well known as flood area, they built just at the right time to have problems and almost any rain will get them wet. There are lots of cases of tragedy, however. People just seem unable to move until it's late. Love water too, same sign, and agree with your proper range of elevation. Re: *ist DS storage question
Well, I have NO experience with eneloops - may try, someday, and may even post the results here just to see what develops. Each and every battery would behave in some particular way when presented to some particular camera, in some specific temperature, after X days of being charged by Z brand charger at Y volts versus A miliampers... and the camera will try to judge the remaining capacity looking for a certain treshold voltage. And the voltage variations here should be small - and measured in actual use, so this voltage is not the one measured with ordinary meters. This measurement is made in presence of a demand. How soon this specific camera will say that particular battery set is depleted? It will depend on a whole set of circunstances, but I'm positive there will be cases such as yours, William. Because that particular set feels better charged to the camera, as under its present demand the voltmeter stays in the green zone. I'm willing to bet some cents a different set of higher-rated batteries may endure a little longer if you use the flash more, or keep shooting at a faster rate, or the temp gets a little higher. Let's not forget the batteries in question may be good for other cameras even after being pronounced dead by one. Each and every eletronic gadget has its own signature, about using energy. Some use much energy to power up, than very little to remain in operation. Those different uses will drain different batteries in (guessed right) different degrees. Static tests made with constant-demand dummy loads will never get the same results, even if they're made by unbiased people. So both lab curves AND real world results by observing people with the same gear are important tools to find out which batt will work better. If the amount of energy in those things would be equal to the amount of energy used discussing their use... :-) LF William Robb escreveu: - Original Message - From: "Brian Walters" Subject: Re: *ist DS storage question I'm with you, Charles. I used a few different brands/ capacities of NiMH bateries with my istD before going to non rechargable lithiums. Saw tons of people wandering around with massive DSLRs and big lenses hung from their necks, as well as big bag or backpack stuffed full of photo gear. I didn't see many pictures being taken, and I have to say that I wonder what the point of carrying 20 pounds of expensive camera gear around a show floor for several hours might be unless you're using it to make photographs. WOW. It happened that I saw someone I'd met at a photo talk as I was leaving the show. He had a Canon 5D, four big lenses, bag o gear, etc. I asked him what kind of photos he was working on. "Haven't taken any pictures today. My back hurts, I'm going home," was his response. WOW. I played with the Nikon D700 and D300 again at the Nikon booth. Nice ... solid, professional quality cameras. Good lenses. I didn't bother to pick up the D3x or D3, I know they're great pieces of equipment. WOW. My meander through the show was as it usually goes nowadays. I wander the edges of the exhibition space looking at the small booths and talking to people. The usual suspects were there, I picked up a couple of pieces of literature, talked to a few old friends and colleagues. It was a good show. I had my modest shoulder bag, the G1 fitted with Olympus 25mm lens, some stuff for the galleries (a folio or two), and my usual complement of carryabout junk in the form of cell phone, ipod, notebook, voice recorder, pens, etc. About two-three pounds of stuff, total, and nothing in my pockets. People seeing me snap a photo with the G1 came running over to ask questions about it. The guy with the Canon nearly cried when I handed it to him ... the whole camera and lens weighs less than a third of one of his lenses. I only took a couple of photos there ... most of what I shot was on the BART train going to and from the city. Got a couple I like ... so far. Later in the evening, I attended a bon voyage party for a couple of friends heading out on a year's sabbatical. I had the same camera with me and made a few family and friends snapshots. It's small, unobtrusive, unthreatening appearance makes it a snatch to engage with people ... the equipment disappears in my hands, just like my old Leica M did. Now *that* was the best WOW of the day. :-) Godfrey Equipment often gets in the way of photography. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
