RE: Sigma 10-20 vs Pentax 12-24
One thing I would consider is what you want to use the lens for. For me, wide angles are generally for landscape photography and this introduces an additional issue to consider - the sun... The Pentax SMC coating has always been far better than Sigma at avoiding flare and ghosting and for this reason alone I would strongly consider it. Don't get me wrong - I have a lot of Sigma glass and many of the EX lenses are great but these particular lenses are going to have a bug hunk of glass catching the sunlight. I think these are both very fine lenses, and neither would be a bad choice but my money would be on the Pentax. Mind you I also buy my Pentax gear from somewhere that give me a free 3 year guarantee which helps. I am planning to buy a WIDE angle lens. I am hesitating between the Sigma 10-20 and the Pentax 12-24 (maybe Pentax 10-17 Fisheye) As the price the Pentax 12-24 is almost 2 times as the Sigma 10-20 but as I read the reviews both are good lens. Actually I am wondering if the Pentax one worths it's price compared to the Sigma one or should I go for the Sigma? Is there any noticeable IQ or CA advantage to the Pentax? Some says the Sigma becomes best if stopped down... but I would like to have a lens which is good at wide open too. So any advice? Is the Pentax that much better than the Sigma as the price shows or not? :D Thanks, .t -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
RE: Flash for K10D
Failing that, another thing that might be worth considering is if you buy another AF-360GZ which breaks somewhere else, you would be able to use the other one for spares? RE: Sigma 100~300 f/4 DG APO lens
I have had one for a good few years. Used it a lot on the MZ-S back in the film days. My lack of time to follow the hobby these days and also the type of photography I have done for the last couple of years mean it hasn't even been tried on the K10D or K20D yet, and maybe not event on the *istD... Must get it out again. Anyway, I found it a fantastic lens, and AF was good on the MZ-S - as I found at the Duxford PDML meet. Very sharp but very heavy. Although I found it not significantly heavier than their (also superb) 70-200 F2.8 and the range was better for me at the time. There are a fair number of reviews here: http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-zoom/sigma/PRD_85165_3128crx.aspx I don't believe they have built an HSM version for Pentax yet, so bear that in mind. Very good. Solid as a rock. I like it a lot. To the point where I concider selling my other long lenses. Optically it beats the shit out of the Tamron adaptall 300/2,8 and the K-500/4,5. It is good fully open, and very good at f:5,6. I've used it with the Pentax 1,7x AF TC. That combo definately needs a bit stepping down. But at f:10 it only needs a minor contrast boost in PP to deliver. I'm really waiting for the new TC to come. The only point that I'm not confident in is the AF. Far to easy to easy to distract. And it tends to go in the wrong direction. But this could be me, or the body, or both (me and my body) I'm not used to AF and long glass, so I don't know what to expect. All this said. I've read a lot positive about the Sigma 100-300/4. Mostly from Canikon birders in Norway. I've seen very good pictures from it. Seems to perform very well with the matched TC. There is also a guy at pentaxforums who has both the Sigma and the DA* 300. According to him they are on par with each other. I find that hard to beleave. There is conflicting inforamtion about HSM on this lens. FS Friday as new K10D with warranty (body only)
OK, I have taken the plunge and upgraded to the K20 and now need to recoup some of my outlay by selling my trusty K10D. Bought January 2007. Have taken about 1500 shots with it. Should still have 20 months warranty from the Pentax Pro shop wher I got it (Kamera Altrincham otherwise known as http://www.equipmentexpress.co.uk) as there was a 3 year warranty on it. I have emailed them today to make certain this can be transferred, but I don't imagine there would be a problem. Incidentally I got my K20D from them too because that free warranty is great. I also got their price down to match competitors who arent giving any extra warranty! Comes boxed, without a mark on it and with all the CDs, instructions, cables etc. If you didn't look at the picture count you wouldn't know it was not new. Comes with the first firmware upgrade (V1.1?) to enable wireless flash but havent upgraded it since then so you could still get into the service menu and adjust the focus (something I never got round to because my lenses were very accurate on it). Offers in the region of £300 delivered in the mainland UK, or it will go on ebay shortly. Please feel free to ask any questions, or to request a picture etc. Cheers Rob -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Actually, looking at it you might have some luck with a PDA running satnav software. The PDA will not be as good as a dedicated unit but is more likely to feed an external monitor (although I don't know much about PDAs to be honest!). However, I have used the LC-4 past that maximum. But that is a moot point. Other points you may wish to consider: You claim to have read the details on the auction page but in case you missed it, anyone with negative feedback should have emailed me first before bidding. In fact you bid and won the item with some negative feedback, in total contravention to eBay's policy as listed here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/unwelcome-buying.html I was minded to cancel the auction and file a complaint. However, I did not. Your 2nd and 3rd emails to me were not what I would describe as 'friendly', and indeed I found them threatening. Bidding and buying on an item in an eBay auction is supposed to be final. In fact I am happy to refund on any item that is not as described - a totally optional and friendly gesture. The Canon LC-4 Wireless Remote Control that I sold to you was as described in full working order and in mint condition. The fact that I may have detailed one fact with an incorrect number (according to Canon) is relevant but not, in my opinion, reason for a refund. The fact is that you have had the item for several days now - you claimed you needed it in a hurry, and I went against my better judgement and sent it off earlier than I normally would have (again a friendly gesture). And now you claim you have not even had the unit out to test it? I am what I would consider to be a reasonable chap - I'm not out to con anyone. Never have and never will. I provided an item for sale in good faith. Anyone buying from eBay should do their own research and consider carefully the deal they are entering into. Regards, Steve C (If I had listed it correctly at 100m working distance, I would not entertain a refund, unless the unit was faulty. I'll list my lessons learned at the end of tail) Steve, Have now tested the item and it appears NOT to be working. When going into the flash mode selection, wirless is shown but it is greyed out and cannot be selected. Is this because I don't have a lens mounted for some reason? I don't quite understand this. RE: A little *ist D statistics - regarding Value for money
I actually look at my value from the *istD in another way: One of the first dozen shots I took with my *istD (all just test shots of my kids, then 3yrs and 1yr old) was worth the price of the camera alone - even if I had dropped it in the sea the next day and lost all of my money. I was trying out ISO 1600/3200 and the shot I got would not have happenned with film, not to mention that I wouldn't have been shooting the kids at that time had I not bought the D and wanted to test it out. Every day's use since then has been a bonus. Like the £1000 camcorder I bought 4 yrs ago, and have only shot 10 hours of video with. I am currently editing these and putting them on DVD. I have just replaced the camcorder with a 3ccd version from Panasonic, so that works out £100 per hour of video over the last 4 years. Expensive, but when these are the best memories of your childrens early lives it is worth every penny. In 20 years time if I didn't have this video I would gladly pay 10 times that for the opportunity to go back and film it! Rob -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jens Bladt Sent: 21 January 2007 08:26 To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List Subject: A little *ist D statistics Hello All Since I am soon to receive my K10D, which will partly replace my *ist D, I guess a little statistics is in it's place. I had it for 29 months. I did 45000 shots I paid app.. 1180 USD incl. CF-cards, for it. That's the total cost - just about. That's in average 52 shots every day. Each shot cost me 0,4 USD or 4.4 cents That's 2.3 USD every day. Something like 5 cigarettes every day (Danish price level). I don't smoke BTW. If I had used film and my MZ-S this figuring would have been very different: I would have taken only 33 % of the number of shots = 15.000 shots I would have been able to use the camera for 29 more months before it got obsolete, reducing the cost of the camera to 50%. I would have used 417 films at a total cost of app. 6000 USD Each shot would have cost me app. 0.5 USD, which is about 10 times the cost of a digital shot ! In total I would have spent app. 7000 USD. About selling photographs: I believe the *ist D did pay for itself - a couple of times actually, during it's 29 months of hard labour. If I had used film I would have lost money - I guess I would have spent perhaps 3000-4000 USD, that no one but me, would have had to pay. No wonder digtal cameras are so popular. Soon I will (almost) retire the *ist D. It will serve as a back-up body - or my wide angle body, when ever I use two bodies simultaneously - one wide angle lens and one tele lens. The final economics of the K10D will no doubt be even better than described above, since the camera is less expensive and more ressourcefull (67% more pixels in each shot and Shake Reduction will probably mean, that I will sell more photographs). RAW processing for K10D

RE: Official Full Frame Pentax Rumor - Technical Limitations of KMount?
I think a bigger issue may be that FF + SR in the same body would make for a very large camera. Even if the two couldn't work together, the firmware could automatically crop a certain number of pixels from the edge when SR is turned on. At least for wide angle landscapes where you don't need SR, you would get the bigger image area. But look at the size of the K10D, and that is because of the APS sized SR mechanism. Imagine how big an FF sensor indide such a mechanism would be - not to mention that you would need much stronger magnets etc to move the larger sensor. I am not convinced that they would put both in the same body. However I would like to see 1.2 or 1.3 crop sensor with SR, and/or FF sensor without SR. There would be applications for bigger bodies without SR, even if they would be more niche players. I would dearly love to be able to use my 77 for portraits again, but on the smaller sensor the FOV is just not wide enough for indoor shots. So I use the 50 1.4 which is fine, but I fell in love with the 77 and would give my left arm to use it as intended again, but on digital... Look at some of the side by side comparisons. Remember some of the old time discussions about 'circle of confusion' at 1/1000th of an inch. Shake reduction is going to be a movement of very tiny proportions. 1 to 3 pixels on a sensor that is 3000+ pixels wide. However, the big difference really comes when you try tweaking the images (Shadow/highlight, Noise Ninja, and the like). After proper tuning, there is a huge difference in favor of the K10D: detail, dynamic range and presence (not sure how to describe that perception, it's the feeling of objects being truly there, so that they look real and you can even touch them). Immediate thing that comes to mind here is that the K10D shot has waaay too much contrast and the mid range in addition to the shadow areas are dissapearing into blackness. I think you have also gone too far (on my monitor) away from the red cast and the K10D shot now has a greenish cast. RE: K10D image quality
OK so no processing - then the question is whether processing could fix the serious (in my book) problems in the K10 image. If I only had these jpgs to choose from, I would most definitely take the dl shot. The colour cast could be fixed and a touch more contrast and sharpening would solve the problems there. This small K10 jpg would be a lot harder if not impossible to correct if detail has been lost in the shadows. Now I would imagine that correcting the K10 shot in the RAW conversion would far beat the DL shot but the point being made here was about how they looked out of camera and it doesn't look good in this instance at least, in my opinion. Both were iso200 with auto whitebalance in aperture priority with the lens stopped right down. http://tinyurl.com/y5mqe4 Another interesting thing is that these files have been resized to exactly the same number of pixels, however the K10D file is about 25% larger. Clearly the K10D captures and retains more data. Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: There may be wailing and gnashing of teeth over on DPReview about perceived problems with the K10D, but my initial impressions with my new K10D are that this camera delivers astonishing image quality! Images are much sharper right out of the camera (even with the same lens) than my istDL. The colour balance and rendition are vastly superior to the istDL and the tonal gradations and shadow detail (in fact dynamic range in general) are also vastly superior to the DL. Every shot from the DL had to be quite drastically tweaked in levels to get rid of the red cast in every shot. Levels, curves, selective colour and slight selective saturation adjustments are part of my regular workflow for images from the DL. Last night, I found that a very quick and subtle tweak of levels and curves were all I needed to get more than satisfactory results from my K10D files. They really do POP! I also did an experiment with the same lens, same settings on the tripod, etc between the two cameras. I shot RAW and converted to JPEG with no adjustments whatsoever. Unfortunately, I resized them a little too small, so I'll redo it with larger files, but the difference between the two was staggering. In isolation the istDL shot looks okay. When compared to the K10D shot, the istDL shot is unacceptably soft, muddy, underexposed and red. The difference really did blow me away. Long story short...even though I had built the K10D up a huge amount, it has certainly met my expectations. The only issue I've had is the shake reduction appears to be a little intermittant. Sometimes it works (you can hear it during exposure) and sometimes it doesn't. Was great to see everyone. The market was soo much more interesting than I remember (from 15 years ago - at which time I was probably more than a little drunk!). Saw the guy with all the piercings in his face, but didn't get a good shot alas. Not really my style of photography either - I am an out and out landscape photographer by passion, and really struggled in the melee of the place. Got a few shots which were OK at showing the place, but nothing I would even begin to be proud of. Fascinating place though, and I wont be leaving it so long before I go back. Shame you couldn't record the fabulous food smells as you walked around - I nearly had to have a second lunch! Sorry that I didn't find any of you at the end, couldn't hang around too long and left about 5:30 - but it sounds like you lot may have already left anyway. Pictures will follow once I arrive home later this week. Thanks for being there. :-) Thanks Godders. It was a very brief meeting for Alma and I - we arrived late (after an unscheduled diversion on the underground) and had to leave early to pick up our son. It was pleasant seeing everyone. Sorry to Steve from DPReview and our own Rob from Reading - didn't get to say good-bye as we had to dash off while you were in the market somewhere. Camden (locks and market etc) is a very busy place on a weekend with plenty to do and see, but too much for me. I'm a country bumpkin now and the outrageous crowd numbers I found too overwhelming. I think I took about four shots and deleted them all - not a good shooting day. I think I'm entering a more 'focussed' phase where I know exactly what I want to shoot, rather than do the photographic equivalent of pick-pocketing. The company was great though, and nice to see Bob and Godders again, and we met Skye and her husband (I'm crap with names - was it Edward?) and her sister. Add to that list: C. Landscape photographers - many of whom havent gone digital because (I think) most MedF solutions need to be tethered to a PC, need mains power, or are just too bulky to use in the field. Some of these may have gone digital (if so then many would probably look to the 35mm FF solutions) but probably few find digital up to the standard so also shoot film still. The 645 would (hopefully) be a good field use camera and not have any huge competition in this market, albeit a slightly niche market I guess. You still (at least up to a year ago anyway) find Pentax highest penetration in this market among professionals as far as I can see - the 645 and 67 are quite common in UK outdoor mags. I don't think the 645D is particularly aimed at studio photogs because there are solutions which will be fine for them already - albeit expensive ones...! Actually the only area where digital is an overwhelming advantage are news, and event photography. Oh, yes, and snapshooters who have to see their image to know if they got what they thought they got. Which brings up an old story. To me, this is far more serious than losing use of the aperture ring. Almost all of my indoor flash photography is done with the wireless 360 bounced and the RTF providing a little fill to avoid shadow cast. This means I can bounce the 360 off the most appropriate surface because I can point it in any direction (I hand hold it), and I don't have to mess around if I change the orientation of the camera etc. I usually only mount the 360 on the shoe when I need more range from it. Hope you are right Paul. Cant believe they would do something like this - there is no justifiable reason for it, unless you were selling a camera without RTF. The use of RTF other than as a controller could arguably not belong on a higher end model like this, so if they were going to nobble it, they would be better to remove it altogether and make the camera significantly smaller IMO... If this isnt on there I will have to be seriously re-evaluating my purchase of this camera, such is my need for this. I love (almost) all of the features on the K10D more than words can say, but my *istD still does me fine and if I can only use the new camera for 50% of my photography, and have to go back to the *istD for the other half then I am just not sure that I can buy into that. It may seem like overreacting, but 90-95% of the indoor shots I take use wireless triggered by the RTF and I am not going to carry both around all the time so I can juggle which one to use based on this feature. Dust-proof, water-resistant construction The K10D boasts a reliable dust-proof, water-resistant construction, with special seals applied to 72 different parts of the camera body, including the shutter release button and switches/levers/dials. This dependable body makes it possible to use the K10D in the rain or at dusty locations without worries. 6. Powerful rechargeable batteries for extended shooting The K10D features new, large-capacity lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, which can capture approximately 730 images** when fully recharged. ** Under testing conditions prescribed by the CIPA standards (flash illumination used in 50% of images). 7. Dust Removal system to keep dust off the CCD surface The K10D features the new Dust Removal (DR) system to prevent dust from sticking to the surface of the CCD image sensor (or low-pass filter). Applied to the CCD surface through a vapor deposition process of a fluorine compound, the PENTAX-original Special Protect (SP) coating effectively removes dust and stains from the surface. In the next step, dust that still remains on the surface will be shaken off when the SR system shifts the CCD at high speed. The dust that is shaken off the CCD will fall onto an adhesive sheet positioned at the bottom of the SR unit, eliminating any possibility of its returning to the CCD surface. 8. Sensitivity-Priority mode: The K10D features a new Sensitivity-Priority AE (Sv) mode, which is designed to automatically select the optimum combination of aperture and shutter speed for a user-selected sensitivity. The sensitivity can be shifted instantly (in 1/2 or 1/3 steps) by turning the electronic dial. Since this mode eliminates the need to recall a menu screen for sensitivity changes, the photographer can react more quickly to changing photographic conditions. Oh, and it of course still has 10Mp CCD, in-body Shake Reduction, HyperProgram and HyperManual modes, 11 point AF with 9 cross sensor, 0.95x pentaprisma etc... -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

I don't know what the average size of a King Cobra is, but in East Africa (home of many pythons) you seldom see a python longer than 15 ft. So much, much, smaller is not, in my view, correct. Well, Cobras are a fair bit shorter and the largest constrictors (I'm not getting into the Python/Anaconda argument) are considerably greater in girth, so in my view it is. 8-) I wasn't aware of any geographical restrictions on the discussion. And as for Black Mambas... give me a croc any day. You might have a better chance of running from a croc but, if either of them got to you, the Mamba might be a quicker way to go. Neither would be painless. Black Mambas are big, very poisonous, fast, and, crucially, extremely aggressive. George Ionnides, the greatest snake collector of all, feared no other snake but gave Black Mambas a very wide berth. His book, if you come across it, is an excelent read. You can meet them anywhere, and if you are close they will usually attack. With crocs, you know where they will be, and if you have any sense you will be on land, in which case it is quite likely that they will be basking in the sun like a coster, and give you no trouble. Black Mambas are thought to kill more people in coastal East Africa than all other wild-life combined. And incidentally, I wouldn't choose to be bitten by a python. I was simply voicing a preference if the alternative were a King Cobra. John I thought we were comparing crocs and mambas? My point is that, if either of them actually gets to you, the mamba would probably be the quicker way to go. Not exclusively and neither pleasantly. Enough morbidity! Let's talk about photography. Does Pentax make a lens long enough to shoot mambas in the wild? The bigger question I guess would be whether these new USM lenses also have the mechanical linkages to work on older bodies? I have a strong suspicion that they will not, but would love to be wrong... If not then it is less useful to have an ist(any flavour) or K100(unless it gets enabled) as a backup body. Just wanted to add my huge thanks to Cotty for organising things and to all the other 'listers' for turning up and making it so good. I absolutely love London (particularly the diversity as you walk around) but don't spend nearly enough (leisure) time there. I also live the PDML and the folk on here, but don't spend nearly enough time here these days (damn work!)... So the opportunity to combine both was not to be missed. Borough market was fantastic. I never knew the place existed, but shall visit again in the future. I loved the place so much that I would be hard pressed to say which of that or the London Eye was best. Not to say the Eye was anything less than stunning! Perfect time of day to be up there - must say I was glad not to have to join the rather large queues too. I just love seeing any big city from up high at night. The Eye was over too quickly though, or at least the time seemed to go very fast - as was the case for the whole gathering. As others have suggested it would be nice next time to have more time to chew the fat with the other folk, and perhaps not such a hectic schedule - but I wouldn't have changed the itinerary for the world. Some great pics from everyone already - I shall add my own to Photosig when I get round to it (damn work again). Toodle pip - back to the grind now... RE: Where's Cotty?
MG Rover was the remainder of British Leyland I believe, after Jaguar some other bits were extracted from the group in the late eighties. British Leyland was formed I think when all the UK manufacturers were in trouble with the idea that together they could survive. MG Rover had some tie ins with Honda in the early nineties, before being sold to BMW who really wanted the Land Rover business. They made masseive losses on the rest of the group, so sold MG Rover for £10 to a rescue consortium of British wheeler dealers. BMW had already sold Land Rover to Ford after milking their knowledge of Off-Roaders, and Kept mini which is doing good business. MG recently has only been a badge for the 'sporty' Rovers, and there will be no more MGs, or Rovers unless or until someone buys the names. MG racing which was separate has also ceased most of its activities as I thibnk it depended on money from the main group. -Original Message- From: Keith Whaley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 April 2005 20:35 To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Subject: Re: Where's Cotty? RE: OT - Computer nerds unite! I have a networking problem...
To find the IP address you should just be able to right click on the computer icon next to the time and select properties. The support tab there should show you the IP address. You can also select properties, select the TCPIP and click the properties button/ Failing that - go into control panel, network and internet connections, network connections then right click on the appropriate connection (you may well only have one) and select properties. Also worth looking at in control panel are the firewall settings (Under security center in control panel) - you could just try turning it off if it is on. Firewall is relatively new in XP so unless you stay up to date you may not have it. If you recently updated it probably got installed and may well be blocking internet connection sharing. Beyond that, internet connection sharing in XP home is a nightmare - you just have to keep plugging away until it decides it will work for you (or not!). RE: OT - Computer nerds unite! I have a networking problem...
I think that is quite possible - on the basis that SP2 introduced the windows firewall amongst other things. Rolling back seems a little severe though... The point is that regardless of the cause of the problem, a router is much more efficient and reliable than a PC sharing the internet connection anyway - not to mention simpler to set up. Machines could then work independantly and the 'connected' machine doesn't have to spend resource serving up stuff to the remote. -Original Message- From: Ryan Lee [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 22 February 2005 16:29 To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Subject: Re: OT - Computer nerds unite! I have a networking problem... Sounds like you're using the PC as a bridge connection for the laptop to get out to the internet. A better arrangement would be to use a router between the cable modem and the computers. Each computer would hook directly to the router and would be able to access the internet without depending upon having the other computer turned on. A 4-port router is pretty cheap - about 40USD - and comes with a setup CD that pretty easily configures the computers on the network. Linksys and Belkin are two popular routers here in the states for home networking equipment. Adding a router has the additional benefit of built-in firewall called Network Address Translation (NAT). The outside world only sees the IP address of the router and not the IP addresses of the computers on your network. Paul I know that this does not address your immediate problems but I agree with Paul about adding a router to your network. I think that it would actually simplify things for you and be more robust and secure. I currently have a network at home with a Linksys Router (BEFSX41) and 16 port switch (EZXS16W) supporting 6 PCs a couple of network attached hard drives, two printers, scanners, etc. all accessing the internet via a cable modem. The setup and maintenance of the network is relatively easy. The router is a DHCP server which means that it assigns the IP addresses to each of the PCs and administers the network. There is very little for you the user to do after it is setup. Adding a PC is not much more than attaching to an open port on the network. Just a suggestion and maybe an inappropriate one at this time but worth considering after you sort the current problem out. Larry

RE: PENTAX PHOTO Browser + Laboratory update
Does anyone have an emailable/downloadable copy of the original software anywhere easy? I do have mine but I will have to wade through piles of junk in the loft to find it - I didn't install it when I replaced my PC because it was so poor compared to Photoshop CS, but I want to have a look at the new one. I don't know why they don't just put proper installs in the web - its not like anyone in their right mind would steal the software if they didn't have a Pentax digicam is it? Much appreciated if anyone can help... I think that *ist DS users (with version 2.0) should update too. Here is the link (down the bottom): http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/support/download_digital.html Haven't looked at the Lab yet, but have used the browser briefly and it feels pretty good (faster?). Seems more professional anyway. Now we only have to wait for the *ist D firmware version 2.0 (-: Cheers, David -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. RE: *istD EOL...
I have always found Pentax AF much more reliable than my cy manual focusing. Started with the MZ-30, then the MZ-S was a definite step up. *itdD AF seems to be have trouble locking more often than the MZ-S but will sometimes focus in lower light than the MZ-S would. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 January 2005 15:23 To: pentax-discuss@pdml.net Subject: RE: *istD EOL... Quoting Pål Jensen [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Alan wrote: There never was much wrong with Pentax AF anyway. (I'm not quite sure whose comment that was) I never found anything wrong with Pentax AF on the much-maligned PZ-1 and I thought the ZX-5n wasn't too bad either, though not good in really low light. However, it seems to me that autofocus on the *ist D is worse than either of those. I use manual focus most of the time with the *ist D because I've lost a lot of shots while the camera hunted, and lost some more that turned out, upon inspection, to be out of focus. And as I've said before, the autoexposure with the *ist D doesn't work as well as ANY other Pentax camera with AE that I've used: that would be two ME Supers, P30t, Super Program, Program Plus, LX, PZ-1, ZX-5n, WR-90 and Optio 550. That said, I am learning to get better exposures out of the *istD, and as someone else has said, its viewfinder works fine for manual focus. ERNR

RE: Photo.net Changes the Rules and a Question
I think Photosig is pretty good. -Original Message- From: frank theriault [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 16 November 2004 15:10 To: PDML Subject: Photo.net Changes the Rules and a Question Again, Photo.net pisses me off. Under the old rules, a non-member (in other words, someone who doesn't want to pay an annual fee, like me), one could post up to 99 photos in their gallery. If one went over that amount, the post would still go through, but any of your photos could be arbitrarily deleted without notice, to get your number down to 99. Fair enough. Yesterday, when I posted my most recent PAW (which only Cotty liked g), a big red notice is on my screen that I'm over my limit of ~47~ photos. Huh? Well, it seems that guests (which is what they now call me, since I won't pay) now have a limit of 5 photos, plus extras. The number of extras one is allowed is determined by some arcane and undisclosed formula that has to do with how many viewings one's photos have had, along with how many photos one has posted. The number of extras can fluctuate without notice. Okay, I know, I know, I'm a cheapskate looking for freebies, and I have no right to complain, right? Wrong! Seems to me that changing the rules mid-stream, without notice, is entirely unfair. At least they could have a Sunset or Grandfather Clause (or whatever they call them) wherein the new rules only apply to new members (sorry, guests), and anyone who's been around for a while still has the same old guidelines applied to them. So, again, I'm looking for a new place to put photos. My searches in the past didn't prove fruitful, because anyone who wanted to view at those places had to sign in (don't like that). I see Boris is using Web Aperture, but folks don't like the resized window. Who's Amita with? Mug-something-or-other? Anyone have any thoughts on that place? Is it free? I really don't want to have to pay for this - having to put up with ads, and having my name and info go into a databank to be used for who knows what is about all I'm the payment I'm willing to make. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson

RE: Over to the Dark side.. ist D vs 20D brief comparison
The size is fine for me, but the shape of the grip is less than ideal. I REALLY miss the MZ-S as it felt like it was bespoke built for me and could easily have been an extension of my arm! There is not another camera on the planet which grips as nicely as the MZ-S... I have the grip but never use it as I cant get happy with it at that size, and don't really mind holding it vertically without the grip. Plus it wouldn't go in my camera bag with the grip attached and I cant be ar**d to keep taking it off putting it on. -Original Message- From: Cotty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 November 2004 15:45 To: pentax list Subject: Re: Over to the Dark side.. ist D vs 20D brief comparison On 11/11/04, Ryan Lee, discombobulated, unleashed: I completely agree with you about feels and looks; the ist D is a gorgeous little thing, and it's not too shabby specwise either. In fact you will still be able to use it with a full frame Pentax - just that the edges of the frame will be black. RE: Have you backuped your pics ?
Articles here that includes a few comments here from Andrew Wyllie (NEC) who are backing the HD-DVD format (as opposed to BluRay) with Toshiba: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/New...?RelatedID=5794 http://pcworld.co.nz/news.nsf/0/00B6ADAE5467DBC5CC256ECF00761FA3?OpenDoc ument http://www.eetimes.com/article/showArticle.jhtml?articleId=26100874sub_ taxonomyID=2251 The article is interesting but he is wrong on a few things he mentions: - BluRay disks can now exist without a caddy due to a protective coating much as DVD-RAMs - Both Sony and Panasonic have developed blue/red combo lasers for DVD, CD and BR reading To be fair though there is just as much false info out about HD-DVD - those who say 15GB (single layer) and 30GB (dual layer) is not enough for long HD movies simply underestimate the compression WMV and MPEG4 can bring to such content. Longhorn will support HD-DVD: http://www.cdr-info.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=9845 It will be interesting to see how the HD-DVD versus BluRay 'war' turns out. IMHO we are unlikely to see an early mass adoption of blue laser products because there is no pressing need for people to upgrade - a 4.7GB DVDR provides sufficient storage for most, an 8.5GB dual layer DVDR even more so. Thus both formats are likely to survive initially - and perhaps this is a bad thing? Unlike for recordable DVD, the Hollywood studios will have an impact as they will start releasing high definition content on either HD-DVD or BR-ROM. So early adopters are in the position where they could, potentially, buy a failed product. In short a true return to the days of Betamax versus VHS - only worse as it is worldwide failure the new format is looking at. Physically BluRay has greater capacity (25GB or 50GB as opposed to HD-DVDs 15GB/30GB). However HD-DVD is potentially going to be more durable and (possibly) cheaper. Again it is too early to comment with any accuracy though. So that puts current support for HD-DVD as Toshiba, NEC, Sanyo and Microsoft. BluRay is supported by JVC, Hitachi, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung and Sony among others. I do find it interesting that the HD-DVD camp are playing the 'compatibility card' - much like the DVD Alliance did until all the independent tests started to show that DVD+RW/+R actually faired somewhat worse than DVD-RW/-R in that department. Certainly both BluRay and HD-DVD machines are going to be backwards compatible with DVDs. Bigger still in the pipeline though: http://www.dvd-recordable.org/modules.php?op=modloadname=Newsfile=arti clesid=1415mode=threadorder=0thold=0 -Original Message- From: Graywolf [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 13 October 2004 14:27 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Have you backuped your pics ? RE: Sharpest Color Film
Depend on how you define sharpness I guess. I found Reala to be more detailed and have more exposure lattitude than Superia which I don't like also due to its colour palette. Other films by default could possibly be more contrasty than Reala though so could 'appear' sharper. Rating Reala at ISO 80 rather than its suggested 100 (and developing as normal) also increases saturation contrast and makes it the best neg film ever in my opinion. -Original Message- From: Shel Belinkoff [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 22 September 2004 15:21 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Sharpest Color Film Need a quick answer if you can. RE: What, no *ist-Ds messages?
The price of the 300D has already been tubling in the UK for a few months now. The 10D seems to be getting close to freefall now too... It is hard to see how Pentax could possibly undercut their competition as things stand, which is why I am glad they seem to have taken a fresher approach by pushing the small light thing and possibly appealing to a new group of buyers. Now we know why they don't bother with a ZLR like the other makes - they don't need one, the istDs does the job and more! -Original Message- From: Rob Studdert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] My point is that with a little bit more thought and it would have appealed to a far wider potential market. Shel From: Bruce Dayton [EMAIL PROTECTED] After having shot the last few jobs in RAW, I can come up with another reason or two. 1) latitude is greater than with jpg. More ability to deal with possible blowouts and more ability to deal with shadows. 2) white balancing after the fact while looking at the whole sequence or shoot is easier and more consistent. I do have some CR-V3s which came with the camera but see no point buying any more when I can get lithium AAs. As for rechargeable CR-V3s the same applies - why use soemthing that isnt versatile enough to swap between equipment. One of the big advantages of the *ist D was the use of a common battery type which could be swapped shared with other gear. Having to buy two chargers for the two CR-V3s that the ist requires made it a paing in the ass too - either that or keep swapping batteries out one by one to charge a set. Rechargeable CR-V3s are also very expensive unless they have come down in price. Buy a Uniross Globetrotter charger which you can use most anywhere and you really have no need for LiOn. -Original Message- From: Herb Chong [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 09 September 2004 00:18 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: CR-V3 rechageables the four brands i saw used three different incompatible charging systems. i am sticking with high capacity NiMH batteries for now with a pair of fresh CR-V3 primary cells as backup. Are they recommendable to use?
RE: Nimh batteries
Also Ansmann Energy 8 (or 16) - very very good, but they aint cheap! Most of the uniross range seems to be switched over to individual cell chargers now too. Actually most if not all manufacturers are switching to individual cell monitoring these days, although they may not have a light on each cell for your info. The key is whether you have to insert batteries in multiples of two as in the old days or any number you like in any combination of capacities. The uniross Globe Trotter and Panasonic BQ-395 both have individual cell charging, but just a single indicator for when the batch is complete. The Annsman is huge, but allows C D cells too, and is great for refreshing old or poor batteries which might have a memory effect - unbelievably fast too! The globe trotter is unbelievably small and goes everywhere with me. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 02 September 2004 22:18 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Nimh batteries Herb Chong wrote: i also strongly recommend a charger that monitors each cell as it charges. it will have one status LED for each cell. you'll get more useful capacity and longer useful life this way. rg replied: Who makes chargers like these? RE: my ist D AF problem
Would be well worth testing on a film body too. It might just be the AF system in the *istD which is often said to have such focussing innacuracies with fast lenses (like the FA 50 1.4 for example). There might be nothing wrong with the lens either... -Original Message- From: Ryan Lee [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 03 September 2004 13:45 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: my ist D AF problem lol! I forgot I had a spare ist D lying around the house. I just did a quick test, and it appears that I don't have to send my ist D back (damn! Because the ist D is still under warranty while the lens isn't..). Anyway, I've noticed that at 2.8, autofocusing on text doesn't emphasise the edges. I assume the temporary workaround would be shooting at 5.6 and smaller, but then that's just hiding the wrong focus in the extra DOF. Anybody know how much sending in a Sigma lens for a CLA costs (assuming it's for an adjustment of the AF, if that's possible, what ranges am I looking at)? Alan Chan http://www.pbase.com/wlachan Upon taking a bunch of rather soft shots, I've just been testing my ist D's AF. It seems that with the Sigma EX 28-70 2.8 (which I've not had any AF problems with my 5n), even though the camera says something is focus (using single point/ spot AF), the camera consistently misses the focus (tested on text). Manual focusing yields the usual sharp focus I'm used to getting. Batteries are full, btw. Does this mean I should return the body for a new one, something is wrong with my lens (I don't think this is the case..), or something else? Please advise. RE: my ist D AF problem
The problems relate to focussing on distant objects and shooting wide open - this is not something which is called for, so normally goes unnoticed until or unless tested specifically. Compare with manual focus on a distant object and you will probably find that the AF has focussed in front of the object. Well documented on dpreview and I think pretty much everyone found to their surprise that it was evident, but the conclusion was that under normal shooting conditions it is not that significant. -Original Message- From: Kevin Waterson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 03 September 2004 13:54 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: my ist D AF problem This one time, at band camp, Rob Brigham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Would be well worth testing on a film body too. RE: Pentax Imaging
This is not at all what I have heard many times in the past. Not saying who is right or wrong but I have often been told that Pentax USA was independent which was why they do not supply international warraties wherease everywhere(?) else does. Not sure why else they would do that. Now that it has been disputed would be nice if someone could dig out the definitive answer with proof? -Original Message- From: Peter J. In this part of the world theres no problem with distribution or getting stuff provided it is still avaiable. The distribution channels seem excellent; my 600mm lens was delivered by overnight express mail from Pentax headquarters in Belgium directly to my door. Out of curiosity, Pål, do you know which of Pentax' distributors worldwide are owned by the mother corp, and which ones are private companies? I know of only the USA and Aussie ones that are private companies, and they both seem to generate a lot of complaints regarding distribution of goods. William Robb

Does the CRT display its data from the sensor, or does it read back what has been written to the tape/media? -Original Message- From: Cotty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 17 August 2004 12:47 To: pentax list Subject: Re: Prosumer vs. DSLR (was Re: two new digicams...) Have you ever tried one of the professional TV cameras? From what I have seen (they have BW EVF, which is inherently sharper than a colour one), they are nowhere near an optical finder yet. Cotty, is that true in the latest models as well? I do not keep up with the industry. AFAIK. The prosumer dv cams might have a flip out LCD but it's nowhere near as good as a small CRT.
