Just got word that a friend who was ailing and tested positive last week is on
the mend. He had all the usual symptoms - cough, fatigue, fever and also loss
of taste and smell - and is feeling much better today. He started to feel ill
about 9 days ago. He’s in his late fifties and is in otherwise good health.

Tunnel ? Light ?

Mainly, it's just that I've got all the 1099-Rs collected together & I want to
get it done before I misplace them again.

I filed mine about a month ago, received my refund within about 10 days. At

year), that goes to an office in Northern California, and it may be months if
ever before I see that resolved.

Will microwaves kill the virus? Maybe I should nuke my 1099-Rs before I

I note that the Coronavirus pneumonia dry cough w/o runny nose is the same

come later.

I guess I'll have them in about two weeks.

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one know
if he/she is infected? By the time they have a fever and/or cough and go to the
hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late. Taiwan experts
provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and
hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without
coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no
Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection. In a critical time, please
self-check every morning in an environment with clean air. Serious excellent advice
by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth
& throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at
least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids
will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your
stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more
regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's very
dangerous.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of
just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the
ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if
you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you
can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric, it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill
it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids
with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10
minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick
your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm
water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasis enough - drink plenty of water!
SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4
days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then
the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're
drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can
one know if he/she is infected? By the time they have a fever and/or cough
and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too
late. Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every
morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds.
If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort,
stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs,
basically indicates no infection. In a critical time, please self-check
every morning in an environment with clean air. Serious excellent advice
by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your
mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15
minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking
water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into
the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you
don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe
and into the lungs. That's very dangerous.

 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS
 1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
 2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
 3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a
temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
 4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to
the ground and is no longer airborne.
 5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so
if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon
as you can with a bacterial soap.
 6. On fabric, it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will
 kill it.
 7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink
 liquids with ice.
 8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for
5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your
eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
 9. You should also gargle as prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm
 water will suffice.
 10. Can't emphasis enough - drink plenty of water!
 SYMPTOMS
 1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting
 3/4 days
 2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and
then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
 3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.

floor, in still air.

#5: Make that 2-3 days on metal.

#7: No evidence that I have ever seen or heard of.

#8: Hand washing with soap is the best preventive measure for almost any
infectious disease.

#9: I’ve never heard of this working for anything but temporary symptom relief.

#10: Can’t hurt.

The symptoms are highly variable, but most often start with nasal congestion,
sometimes fever, and then a sore throat. The drowning sensation in #4 is
something I’ve not heard of or read about.

There’s a lot of stuff going around, including I received today as an mp3,
starting ‘I got this from my friend whose uncle who is a virologist in Wuhan...’

I think anti-bacterial soap is ok against the virus because it’s soap, not
because it’s anti-bacterial.

My uncle is a virologist in Ulan Batar and he says that the surface of viruses
is fat, and soap is effective against fats, so breaks it up and kills the virus.

never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the

clubs, etc) are closed; restaurants are operating for take out only in most
cases. Any public place is operating with Social Distancing rules. Businesses
operating (usually on limited hours) generally have signs out front that allow
only minimal walk-in access at a given time.

I went to the grocery store yesterday to pick up some vitamins and maybe bread,
if there was any. I had no problem getting the vitamins I needed (although the
stock was way down), but the bread section was completely bare. I suspect the
panic buying will slow over the next week, and restock will allow more normal
access to such supplies. I have enough bread to last for five to eight days on
our normal cycle, and have ingredients to bake bread that will extend our needs
if required. There seems to be plenty of the usual produce and other
short-lived foods available.

I've pretty much covered my motorcycle and fitted the battery tender for the
duration. I'll use the car for any essential travel for grocery or medical
needs. I can do the essentials of my physical training workouts, sans weight
lifting, in the living room. Being retired, I have plenty of things to do
around the house and won't be idle or bored: I have my photography, piano,
books, writing, and movies to keep me busy and entertained. Video conferencing,
txting, msging, etc with friends both local and around the world is a boon.

The bright spot is that, according to the local ordinance, outdoor activity for
exercise is permissible as long as the requirements of social distancing (with
other than family) are met ... "examples without limitation: walking, jogging,
running" are listed ... Well, I use a bicycle for my outdoor exercise and that
is indeed a solitary activity—I really don't want to be within six feet of
pedestrians or other vehicles when I'm riding a bicycle! So I can continue my
daily rides albeit without the pleasure of stopping at restaurants/cafes for a
break and a chat with whomever else might be there. And it's safe, at least for
the present.

I took a bicycle ride yesterday: A brief stop at the bicycle shop to pick up
the things I'd ordered that were waiting for me, and then a hour's 15 mile
circuit around a loop that I've been riding for the past four years. Pedestrian
traffic was very light, automotive traffic also, and some stretches were quite
desolate. There were sporadic pockets of others doing their outdoor exercise;
most waved hello in passing, which was nice. It is sad to see this desolation
in our usually active and vibrant communities, but if it helps slow and reduce
the spread of this plague—and ultimately defeat it—so be it.

We're all in this one together, world wide. Stay safe, stay healthy, do what
you can in compliance with the ordinances, don't succumb to panic and fear, and
endure. Working together, we will survive and prosper; at odds with each other,
we'll die. It's that simple.

I’ve commuted yo work at home ever since I left my last agency job 12 years
ago. For years it was a three-mile jog, later a two-mile walk, now a 30-foot
shuffle from kitchen to office. When my health improves I plan to get back to a
one-mile walk.

I've been commuting to work at home this week, and for the foreseeable. This
means I cycle into Central London and back again, then start working at
home, so that I still get an hour's exercise and (fresh?*) air, and I have a
psychological moment between home and work.

So far the motor traffic is not significantly different from normal, and
certainly not on the order of difference I see during school holidays (the
schools here are still open).

When I pass the tube and railway stations they are empty, so it looks as if
people have abandoned public transport and those who still have to come to
town are using their cars instead.

There are noticeably fewer cyclists, which I expect is because they are not
doing a pseudo-commute like me.

*Perhaps when the motor traffic dies down I really will get some fresh air.

I also have the river as a place for walks. People around, but generally on
their own and keeping their distance.

It's very important for people to get outside and get some vitamin D, which
boosts the immune system.

Turns out I had my wires crossed. The person I know is not being tested; it's
the person they were in contact with who's being tested (and is thus not
necessarily positive). They'd shown symptoms after returning to Australia so
obviously fit the testing criteria there.

It turns out that sometimes it does pay to listen to your wife.

I can only answer for California, but here the actual facts at the press
conference were explained as "You can go out for a walk, or take your dog
for a walk. You can be accompanied by members of your household. You can
even be accompanied by non-family as long as you stay at least 6' apart."
(this was from a CDC official, I believe, rather than one of the politicians).

It has since been clarified that you can ride a bike around the neighbourhood.

It's unclear whether these are universal exemptions, or if there are tighter
rules for those of us who are "high risk" (over 65, overweight, diabetic,
asthmatic, in poor health, ...). I check off a lot of those, as does my wife.

There is also some concern that keeping seniors confined too rigidly is itself
problematic; it can lead to depression, and to losing interest in keeping alive.

No loud music, no shouting revelers well into the predawn hours on the

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-17 Thread John
The "plan" here seems to be to stretch it out for as long as possible so we
don't have everyone descending on the hospitals at one time.

I'm resigned that I'm probably going to come down with it sooner rather than
later. I had to do my grocery shopping today, mainly because I'd run out of milk
and I can't get my meds down without it.

I was doing Ok until some delinquent, millennial *ASSHOLE* coughed on me; didn't
even try to cover his mouth. I managed to turn away before he could cough on me
a second time, but I'm afraid the damage is done.

I don't have a face mask, and I thought wearing my cartridge respirator was a
bit over the top, so I took a bandana to cover my nose & mouth in approved
western movie train-robber fashion & wore a pair of the disposable gloves I have
for handling the nasty jobs that go along with the home repairs I've been doing.

I hope that will be enough.

I've been doing all the hand washing & other protocols that are supposed to help
me to keep from being the source for someone else.

Now I'm all depressed because I think it's no longer a question of IF, but how
long before I'll get sick.

Sorry to hear about your mother Larry. I saw my Mom’s decline from afar

it is hard on everyone during and after.

My dad was in the hospital for only a few weeks and was pretty much lucid up
until the end, but that’s another story.

My sister has been reporting my mom being in good spirits, though she’s been
rather out of it the last couple days I heard anything. To be honest, Mom has
the easy part, it’s my sister I’m worried about.

And your Mom, that's really hard.

I was lucky that when my Mom's time came she was only sick for a couple of weeks
& lucid right up the very end. She got to go quietly, with dignity at home the
way she wanted it.

I hope your Mom will have an easier time of it than you're expecting.

How are they handling things like taking the dog outside to walk & do his
business? I'm settled in for the long haul now, but the dog is going to need to
go outside twice a day.

And to be honest, I need the exercise I get from walking him down to the park
and back. We go down to the park because there's a garbage can there where I can
drop off the plastic bag I've collected his poo in.

Testing downunder is also restricted. You need to have cold or flu symptoms AND
either been in contact with a confirmed case or arrived in Australia from
overseas. I have the cold but not either of the other criteria.

Discretion being called for, I'm staying home for the time being. Time to work
on my backlog of photos...

Larry & PJ. My condolences. I lost my parents some time ago now but it I know
the emotions that you will be feeling. Best wishes.

And P.J. And Paul. And John Coyle. And… Many of us are of an age where we have
lost parents and friends and other relatives. When I was young and foolish I
did not understand the phrase “keep them alive in your memories.” But as I very
slowly mature I have found that to be comforting.

Meanwhile, on the streets of a small-mid sized city in the upper midwest U.S. I
have ventured out twice in the last few days. Saturday I started thinking that
the State Government might recommend or require that non-essential businesses
should close for x number of days. I wasn’t sure if they would realize that
liquor stores ARE essential. So we made a run to our local, got a small stock
of wines and tequila and gourmet cheeses. This morning we went to our grocery
store. A half basket of goods for us, a bit less for the local food
pantry/shelter operation.

Some of the things I hadn’t thought about before the apocalypse arrived: if the
shelter house is no longer serving their typical 20-30 person sit-down meal,
and shifting instead to a “box lunch” carry-out strategy, then my usual
occasional donation of cans of beans or sliced peaches aren’t going to be very
useful to them. And that jar of coffee creamer they have in the center of the
table is going to stay inside on the table. I was able to find a couple of
boxes of individual packets of creamer, a few packages of individual servings
of peaches, pears.

Not under any lock-down here, but a definite slow-down amid some mandatory
closures of, e.g., restaurants and bars. Our state governor had been scheduled
to be here at one of our favorite restaurants yesterday evening for the
election-kickoff fundraising event of one of the local politicians. That was
cancelled of course. I had been looking forward to meeting her. Dentist called
to postpone my appointment for tomorrow. Not sure what might happen with my
haircut appointment on Thursday. So we will hunker down, be grateful for our
well-stocked pantry, and try to come up with alternate plans in the likelihood
that our travel plans for this year and next are likely to be scrambled. And I
might even go back into some of the Lightroom work that has been hanging there
since last fall…

Take care everyone, and wash your hands!

Perhaps it’s the other way around. I vaguely recall a report to the effect that
online giving to people financially distressed, e.g., through Patreon, has
spiked recently. But this could be “wishful remembering.”

Make that seven counties, Santa Cruz County is going to shelter in place. On
the bright side, if I can get off my ass, I guess I have an opportunity to make
some progress on a few of the crisis around the house.

Meanwhile, unrelated to covid-19, I was woken this morning by a text from my
sister. Mom is declining, despite the home being on lockdown they were working
on procedures for her to be with Mom at the end, unless of course Mom pulls
through again. A 1700 mile drive, however, is out of the question. I’ve
pretty much said goodbye for the last time every time I’ve seen her for just
over three years, and she wouldn’t even know I was there. I do wish I could be
there for my sister though.

All things considered, Mom passing is the best thing for everyone involved,
especially her, or what’s left of her. She’s been my mom less and less, and
less and less of the time since she broke her hip. I just wish that her passing
could go better than it looks like it will, though I honestly don’t think
she’ll know the difference.

2020-03-16 Thread Alan C
South Africa is now in lockdown too. The authorities are trying hard to
contain it but the number of confirmed cases has shot up from 1 to 62 in
a week. Schools, Universities, Cinemas, Theatres, Restaurants, Churches,
etc restricted/closed. Serious panic buying started in the big centres
yesterday. It will likely spread to the Platteland in the coming days.
All sporting events have been cancelled/postponed until April 15th when
further announcements will be made. Sportsmen have been urged to keep in
training. No financial interventions yet. Stock market has fallen about
35% in 10 days, 12% yesterday after the US rate cut. The SA economy was
already in recession & now this.

I'm glad I went to the grocery store as well as got a haircut over the weekend.
And also glad I went to the gym today for a good hour and a half session and
took a 10 mile bicycle ride. (Nothing's going to be open except for banks, post
offices, gas stations, hospitals, and grocery stores … Not much point to going
for a cycle ride and cafe break when there'll be no cafes or restaurants open.)
Oh yes, and washing my hands and face every ten minutes: I'm not going to run
out of TP, but I am going to run out of soap. LOL!

Seriously, I plan to spend the next couple of weeks doing my home workouts,
cleaning the office, catching up on the photography that has been waiting for
me to have the time, playing the piano, watching a few videos, and reading a
dozen or two books that I've been meaning to get to. About ten events I was to
attend between March and May have all been cancelled now, etc etc;
disappointing but, eh, there'll be other events to go to.

Not much I can do other than deal with it.
No fear or panic solves anything.

With luck, there'll still be some semblence of the world I remember living in
left when I open the door on April 8.

A six-county-wide mandate has put me under Covid-19 House Arrest today. I'm not
supposed to leave home for anything other than "living essentials" like grocery
shopping, particularly since I'm a "senior". Until April 7th…

About ten events I was to
attend between March and May have all been cancelled now, etc etc;
disappointing but, eh, there'll be other events to go to.

Not much I can do other than deal with it.
No fear or panic solves anything.

With luck, there'll still be some semblence of the world I remember living in
left when I open the door on April 8.

A lot less cumbersome and more affordable.

I had luck...  T joe's only slightly crowded normal for a late afternoon
- but as I said I dont have to stand in line.. the aisles are wide and
getting around quickly was easy.  I wanted dark chocolate peanut butter
cups, spinach, taquitos (which I embelish somewhat and soften) and
cottage cheese and a small can of tomato paste.
I scored 3 of 5.   then stopped by my local favorite  Chinese restaurant
and picked up take-away lunch special, General tzo's chicken. It is the
last day you can enter a restaurant or bar here and sit down to eat in
the foreseable future.   I'm still able to walk outside as long as I
keep clear of others and still can go to  grocery or a drug store.   I'm
using a pretty scarf around my neck and over my nose more for keeping
warm and putting others at ease, and am well
protected with the approriate sani-goo on my leather gloves.  When I got
home I took abundance of caution steps and cleaned the outside of each
package
I bought with alcohol , emptied the contents into glass containers and
tossed the ones from the store and restaurant. I also left my cell phone
at home - one less thing to worry about being clean.

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-16 Thread Bob Pdml
That's an interesting read. A couple of weeks ago we were discussing this at
the end of my French cinema class (predominantly people in their 60s and 70s)
and I took the macho line that it's just a bit of flu. The following day I read
an article, which I can't find now, which put the worst case outcome as 5
million dead in the UK alone. That's some virus, that Covid-19.

So even if we aren't worried for ourselves I'm sure we all have many friends
and family who are at great risk and we would like everyone to try and help
them avoid the disease in the first place, and have access to the best possible
treatment otherwise.

I hope everyone looks after themselves and others as best they can.

periodically been water shut offs, water main breaks, etc...  maybe once

to fill with tap water to carry with me.

I'm about to go out in the lonely streets to mail a package... and see

Water is one of the few things it sort of makes sense to stock up on
in the event of the Zombie Apocalypse that people seem to be
preparing for.
Having said that, if one is going to stock up on water, it makes far
more sense to get 5 gallon water jugs and fill them from the tap than
to buy dozens of 1 liter bottles.

I buy distilled water in gallon jugs to use for ironing.

Once they're empty I refill the jugs from the tap & store them in case
we get a "boil water" advisory after a hurricane or something like
that. I've got enough stored to last a few days.

I also keep a package of water (24 sports bottles) in the car for the
dog & me when we're out and about. I got a new package a couple of
weeks ago - stocking up before I knew I was going to need to - so I
won't need to replenish that for several months.

Re: OT Covid-19

2020-03-16 Thread John
I have a friend who travels a lot for business. He started having symptoms a
couple weeks ago and was afraid it was Strep and got tested.

Then last week he was afraid it was *NOT* Strep and had to be tested again.

Luckily it turned out to be neither, but some stupid version of the flu that
wasn't included in the annual vaccine.

Water is one of the few things it sort of makes sense to stock up on in the
event of the Zombie Apocalypse that people seem to be preparing for.
Having said that, if one is going to stock up on water, it makes far more sense
to get 5 gallon water jugs and fill them from the tap than to buy dozens of 1
liter bottles.

I buy distilled water in gallon jugs to use for ironing.

Once they're empty I refill the jugs from the tap & store them in case we get a
"boil water" advisory after a hurricane or something like that. I've got enough
stored to last a few days.
