If I had to give up the 55mm or 77mm today, I would probably keep the 77, again primarily based on size. But the 55/`1.4 makes a great companion to the 21mm for walking a city like Venice or Rome in the evening . . . I can't compare the 55 to the FA-50; I never liked the look or feel of FA lenses and was able to pretty much skip over that generation of lenses, substituting either M or A lenses or FA* lenses. And then we got to the digital bodies and DA and DA* lenses and I've had even less reason to acquire any FA glass. I keep forgetting I have the 55/1.4. It's such a large thing that I tend to use anything but that lens. It's very sharp indeed, even wide open it's decent.. I've been enjoying the 43 quite a bit lately. I've been doing portrait shooting (outdoor corporate headshots this morning) and for that it has the right combo of lightness (beats the DA* 50-135 for that), speed (1.4 vs 2.8) and that portrait lens pleasant softness attributed to the classic 85mm Pentax glass. I also use it as my default carry. I'm going to some sort of local arts media mashup tonight and I'll have it on the K20D. It's very very sharp, but I can't give you a comparison as I've never owned the FA 50. I have an S-M-C Tak 50/1.4, but I rarely use it anymore; it's too much trouble. As for the whole glass sharpness comparison thing, I have to agree with the who cares folks. It covers 5x7 so movements are a bit limited, but at f/22 to f/45 it is slice your eyes out sharp. Wide open, none of them really, but the *600/5.6 would probably be it. In the film era I had an FA*85/1.4, the 55 reminds me of that lens. And that lens was very very nice in many respects. I regret selling it but I needed to finance purchase of my 77mm which had equivalent quality, similar FOV, and much is smaller and easier to travel with. And then we got to the digital bodies and DA and DA* lenses and I've had even less reason to acquire any FA glass. stan -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: PDML members: What is your SHARPEST lens?
The sharpest lens I own is the Vivitar 90-180m f4.5 flat field. That's just purely subjective, no actual testing. It is however not particularly convenient being heavy, relatively slow, and requiring the green button kludge to meter properly. Of my Pentax lenses, the 43mm limited is best stopped down just a bit, the SMCP [K] 135mm f2.5 is very sharp wide open, and the SMCP-F 70-210mm gets lots of complements on it's sharpness. Do you imply they are sharper than you? ;-) That's not setting the bar very high. You should stop that self-flagellation! :-) Either that, or I'm bragging about the quality of my lenses. My most commonly used lenses are my 16-50, FA31, FA77 and DA40. My P50/1.4 is a bit soft wide open, and unfortunately that's how I most often use it as I usually pick it up when I need f/1.4. My 18-250 isn't particularly sharp, but it's sharper at 250 than cropping down from something much shorter. The A* 200/2.8 is pretty sharp, but I mostly use it when I need fast and long. The bigma can be pretty sharp, again sharper at 500 than cropping down from something a lot shorter, but as my recent bird pictures show, it can be a challenge getting sharpness out of it. Stop just about any of those lenses down to f/8-f11 and you'll be hard pressed to tell one from another based on sharpness. I've got a couple of shots I took with the kit lens on the K-x, just for fun, and was pleasantly surprised at how sharp they were. The only reason that I don't use that lens is because my 18-250 is about as sharp and more versatile, and the DA40 is a lot smaller if I want something small and light. For sheer image quality I'd say my favorite lens is my FA77, possibly followed by my DA40. The FA31 is a solid performer and a useful focal length and speed, but for some reason I never developed a strong emotional attachment to its performance. Kind of like the 16-50, I find that I leave the zoom on my K-5 most of the time these days, and it does the job, but it's not a lens that I look forward to using. The other reason that my lenses are rarely the limiting factor is that one of my many peculiarities is that I seem to have more fun working hard to get a decently sharp picture out of lousy light, than I do getting a fantastically sharp picture in good light. If anyone could take a picture, there's no need for me to, I'd rather go for the shot that most people can't even get, where reasonably sharp is a pretty significant technical achievement. Then again, I'm probably not the only odd duck on this list. Sinc eyou don't ask sharpest *working* lens I'd say the A* 200 f4 macro ED. Other notables that come to mind would be an M 50 f4 macro, both M and FA 50 1.7, and (stopped down) Takumar 105 f2.5 (6x7). The D-FA 100 f2.8 is right up there too. Of my more modern lenses, the 60-250/4.0 and 16-50/2.8 are both lenses that have no tradeoffs; i.e., I don't have to stop and think if I am sacrificing image quality in order to get the wide or long FOV I want. Re: PDML members: What is your SHARPEST lens?
The other reason that my lenses are rarely the limiting factor is that one of my many peculiarities is that I seem to have more fun working hard to get a decently sharp picture out of lousy light, than I do getting a fantastically sharp picture in good light. If anyone could take a picture, there's no need for me to, I'd rather go for the shot that most people can't even get, where reasonably sharp is a pretty significant technical achievement. Then again, I'm probably not the only odd duck on this list. Har! We are even! ... at least we are not lame ducks. :-) (I hope...) Igor PS. On 6/22/2011 18:25, Darren Addy wrote: So I thought I would ask PDML members for their opinions on which lens (or lenses) they would rank as the sharpest in their stable: Overall and Wide Open Darren, this is a tricky question. So here is my tricky answer. 1. Most importantly, I almost always shoot hand-held, which immediately implies that I don't extract all the sharpness there is from my lenses. 2. I've all three FA limited lenses that are pretty sharp. I think that FA31 is the sharpest wide open and FA43 is the sharpest closed down a bit. FA 77 is also very sharp, but in a pleasing, not bleeding way. 3. Some of the shots that I made with A 50/1.2 wide open were surprisingly sharp for my taste. Closed down it is also very sharp. 4. Sigma 24-60/2.8 is soft-ish wide open but from f/3.5 on it can be bitingly sharp - like in - you can count separate hairs on the eye brows of my girls from their portraits. 5. DA 21 ain't too impressive wide open, but close it a stop or two and it is pretty sharp. It is Galia's lens now, by the way. 6. Our most resent buy - D FA 50/2.8 is very sharp too and the sharpness is uniform across the frame. Galia uses it with great success. 7. My copy of FA 50/1.4 is also very sharp. It is so sharp that its previous owner was somewhat reluctant to part with it. So, to summarize - when choosing a lens for a shoot or for a walk or even for travel I don't concern myself with sharpness. I would suggest a similar approach.
