  Hi Ken,

Actually, that car has never been in the shop since I've owned it,
except to have new brakes put on. It was over 100,000 miles without a
hitch. And I am not the biggest stickler when it comes to vehicle
maintenance.

I'm not sure if this is going to be worth pursuing -- though the
existence of media footage and photos might be enough to tweak the
conscience of a bean-counting corporate lawyer. I'll have to call
around to some more attorneys to see if there's anyone willing to take
the case. There just aren't a whole lot of them in my area, and the one
I think most likely to take the case is -- well, let's just say there's
some bad blood between us. I once worked for him, and the split wasn't
amicable.

I'll weigh my options. I doubt they'll be doing anything to the car in
the next couple of days.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep you posted as events warrant.

Apparently, it's known to cause underhood fires like the one I had.

Now, it's a matter of finding what to do about it. I called an
attorney friend of mine, but he doesn't work in that are of the law.
So, I need to do a bit more research to find out where to go next.

Was any repair done to the car recently? Are you the original owner?
Did you receive a recall notice?
Take your Vehicle Identification Number to a Chrysler dealer and get
copies of any recall notices.

If you're going to pursue this you need to preserve the remains.
Ideally, you should have a vehicle fire expert examine the vehicle,
this will cost $100 to 250/hour.

Photograph the underhood remains. Do nut disturb the evidence.
It sounds like you may have a case here given the recalls on the car.
Be advised that without a vehicle for the manufacturer to examine, you
have a tough road to hoe and in any event it will take time and effort
on your part to see any return on your effort.
If you pursue this legally, get a lawyer that handles product
liability, ideally one who has handled identical cases, a web search
should help you find one.

Good luck, I hope it pans out for you.

Thanks again.

Plymouth was an actual company that got shut down in Chrysler's

I don't want to be a downer, but I don't think Walt's going to be able

I think it was mentioned it was a 1999 model?

If so, that's a 10+ year old car with 100,000 miles on the clock, and
Walt says it's never been in the shop. I'm guessing he means he never
had to have repair work done on it; that he did have routine maintenance
done.

Still, I'd be willing to bet it's well out of warranty and never been
in the shop would include never having it in to have the power steering
hose defect corrected under recall, which the manufacturer's lawyer
could argue makes Walt equally responsible.

Even if he prevailed, he wouldn't collect more than fair market
replacement value, and that's only about $750 - $1500. The lawyer would
charge more than that.

It sucks, but about the best Walt's going to be able to do is claim the
loss on his income taxes.

That presupposes that the existence of said proof would matter. In
this case, it doesn't.

So, in the end, the moral question is moot, just as the logical one is.

I'm not sure how it started. I suspect it was something electrical,
though there's no way of knowing for sure. I did notice a little smoke
coming from under the hood when I got out of the car, but figured it was
just some oil burning off the manifold from when I put a little in it a
few days before. I thought it was odd and figured the oil would have
burned off already by then, but didn't give it a whole lot of thought.

Turns out I was right. It was odd.

Without seeing the damage it is hard to tell, but it is possible that you could
just replace a few damaged components and get your car working again.

The bad news is that the damaged components are probably the wiring harness and
the plastic induction system. The induction system isn't too difficult, but
replacing a wiring harness could be a major pain in the ass. You may want to
start looking around for cars like yours that have been totalled in a wreck,
but which their wiring harness survived unscathed.

You could do a Google search for something like product liability
attorney plus the year, make, and model of the vehicle, plus, if there
is one and you have it, the NHTSA notice for the defect. Sometimes,
just having the NHTSA notice number in hand and calling the
manufacturer's regional rep is enough to get them to act.

That sux.

But on the bright side at least you weren't in the car when it caught
fire (I've been ... it ain't fun!) and no one was injured.

The rest of it ... eh? Things Happen. We have to cope with it. I've
had so much crap just happen the past few years it's been a struggle,
but with courage you survive and move on. Good luck, keep your head
up.

  Hi all,

Normally, I'm much better about replying in a timely manner to responses to
the threads I start on the list than I was yesterday.  Well, there's a
reason it took me a little longer.

While I was out taking pictures at a political rally, an announcement came
over the public address system saying, If there's an owner of a red
Plymouth here, your car is on fire.  It instantly occurred to me that
owner of a red Plymouth is a pretty accurate description of me.  Lo and
 behold ...

Unfortunately, this is the only car I have, and my insurance isn't going to
cover the loss.  So, now, I'm stuck trying to figure out a way to get around
... with no money, and only a part-time job.  Needless to say, I'm living in
 interesting times.

Anybody know of any photography contests where they give away cars?  Or nice
 bicycles?

  Thank you, Ecke!

I ran a VIN search, and found out there's a flaw in the design of the power
steering assist hose on my car -- which stands to reason, as I'd noticed the
past few times I'd driven it that there was a slight whine whenever I made a
 hard turn.

Recall ID 06V001000 you mean, yeah that and the one I mentioned before
also applies to your model year.
Hopefully some of that booze money can be converted into a down
payment for your lawyer ]=)
Wishing you all the best of luck, man!

  Thanks, Ecke.

I can probably get an attorney to take the case on a contingency basis,
if there's anything to it. I've called Chrysler a few times -- most
recently after having spoken with the local dealership they put me in
contact with and finding them less than helpful and informative.
They're supposed to have a case manage give me a call within 48 hours (I
suspect that'll be Monday). I'll just have to see what develops from there.

Here's hoping for the best.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Walter. If you have any thoughts of seeking relief
from the manufacturer or through the courts, you have to make sure the car
isn't scrapped. It's a closed case without physical evidence.

Apparently, it's known to cause underhood fires like the one I had.

Now, it's a matter of finding what to do about it. I called an attorney
friend of mine, but he doesn't work in that are of the law. So, I need to
do a bit more research to find out where to go next.

Was any repair done to the car recently? Are you the original owner? Did you
receive a recall notice?
Take your Vehicle Identification Number to a Chrysler dealer and get copies
of any recall notices.

If you're going to pursue this you need to preserve the remains.
Ideally, you should have a vehicle fire expert examine the vehicle, this
will cost $100 to 250/hour.

Photograph the underhood remains. Do nut disturb the evidence.
It sounds like you may have a case here given the recalls on the car.
Be advised that without a vehicle for the manufacturer to examine, you have
a tough road to hoe and in any event it will take time and effort on your
part to see any return on your effort.
If you pursue this legally, get a lawyer that handles product liability,
ideally one who has handled identical cases, a web search should help you
find one.

Good luck, I hope it pans out for you.

Thanks again.
