VLC is subject to a lot of input coming from the wild (aka the Internet)
and there have been a lot of security issues notably in the demuxers of
vlc and other media player. Hence upstream decided to block running as
root by default. That is a decision that I and some other Debian and
Ubuntu maintainer of the VLC package support.

The reason why it failed still isn't resolved. Giving the package

It was given back on mipsel and built fine today. So if the problem was

Bug#566924: vlc-nox: Please lower Depends: libavc1394-0, libraw1394-11

2010-02-05 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Le Tue 02 Feb 10 à 10:05 +0100, Reinhard Tartler a écrit :
The slightly good news is that due to the modular nature of vlc if you
remove libavc1394-0 and libraw1394-11 forcefully you won't break vlc

(you should keep libdvbpsi however . It's needed to play MPEG2 TS files)

Oh I thought that's exactly the situation where one could
differentiate dependencies, and have vlc-nox only Recommends:
libavc1394-0 and libraw1394-11 (because vlc can do without, and if
they're just recommendend I could uninstall them without fiddling with the
  package management);

This does only work if vlc was loading those libraries at runtime. If
that is/was indeed the case, then we could do somthing similar like in
 the xine-lib package ages ago.

If vlc is linked dynamically at those libs, then it would crash at
startup as ld-linux.so would fail to bootstrap the image.

 xtophe, can you clarify here?

VLC laods its modules at runtime so technically we could move all the
depends to recomends except libvlc, libvlccore, libc6, libpthread,
libdbus, libdl, libhal and libm

But you'll have a pretty useless vlc.

So in any case we are back to quantifying how important a module is.

Then for not important module we have the choice of:
 - Putting it in its own package (vlc-plugin-dv, vlc-plugin-bonjour)
 - Grouping some modules in one package (vlc-extra-access,
   vlc-extra-servicediscoveries)
 - Relaxing some depends to recommends

The third solution would bring some packaging fun . (Hmmm checking
dpkg-shlibdeps' manpage there is some option to manage that)
I'm also not sure if all the users would realise the Recomends are quite
important. But we could try to educate them in reportbug control files.

Hello,

Yes technically it can theoritically overflow with an very malformed
  AVI (i.e.

However on my simple test (attached) it doesn't wrap up to a negative
  value but
produce a large integer. I'm not sure if we can rely on that feature
  of
  the compiler.

It can't wrap to a negative value as it is promoted to unsigned. But it
 can
wrap to something which is sizeof(str) I think. No proper fix for an
 integer
 overflow in my opinion.

After a lapse of 5 months I'm coming back with a fix.

2010-05-02 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Hello,

 Imported Upstream version 0.1.7

As you'll see from the other commits, it brings a SONAME change. to make
things even more interresting the name of the source package and the
name of the -dev package have changed. (Both to remove the soname from
it). So it will need to go through NEW.

Both vlc and dvblast build-depends on: libdvbpsi5-dev | libdvbpsi-dev
already. That's the only packages depending on libdvbpsi on Debian.
Could someone check on Ubuntu ?

So we can safely upload to sid. But until we revert the order pbuilder
won't pick the new libdvbpsi if it has the choice of the old and new.

I'm trying to confirm with upstream but there is no major new features
or bugfixes. It's more a collection of small stuffs over the last 2
years. So there is no rush.

So I propose to upload to sid rather than experimental and invert the
order (libdvbpsi-dev | libdvbpsi5-dev) at the next upload of dvblast and
vlc. For vlc it will be vlc 1.1.0(-rc) hopefully in a fortnight.

Opinions ?

Verbose build log

Hello,

VLC 1.1.0 uses automake 1.11 and so the build can produce non-verbose logs like
the kernel does for some years.

CC foo.o
CCLD foo.so

We can revert to the old fully verbose behaviour if we like.

Do you know if there is a Debian or pkg-multimedia policy/best-practice on this

Verbose log can help debug FTBFS but increase the size of the log by 2 or 3
order of magnitude

 Package: vlc
 Version: 1.1.0-1

Since version 1.1.0, VLC supports hardware-accelerated video decoding
through VA-API. The required library is already in Debian and should
fail gracefully if no hardware accelerator is available. Please consider
switching this feature on for the next upload.

It also depends on a libva-enabled libavcodec which is only in experimental. So
it will have to wait for after squeeze release or maybe after vlc 1.1.1 i'll do
a package in experimental

Bug#588059: mozilla-plugin-vlc: This package is broken.

 Package: mozilla-plugin-vlc
 Version: 1.0.6-1

 mozilla-plugin-vlc uses the old, BROKEN, mozilla-mplayer (v. 3.5.5) plugin.
 The
Mozilla MPlayer plugin that works is the one used by the package gecko-
 mediaplayer (v. 0.9.9.2-1).

mozilla-vlc-plugin (and VLC in general) has nothing to do with mplayer
or its browser plugins. All they do at best is share some libraries like
libavcodec.

So you report doesn't really make any sense.

Maybe you could try to uninstall/desactivate mozilla-mplayer and/or
gecko-mediaplayer, start iceweasel form a terminal and access a website
with a video causing problem.

Then send us the URL and the messages VLC outputs in the terminal

Also for future reference, using a tool like reportbug to report bugs,
would ensure that usefull info about the package and its depedances are
sent automatically. Here the output of 'apt-cache show
mozilla-plugin-vlc' would be relevant.

Could you try it (it's in sid).

Also on france24.com, I can only find flash videos. Could you give the

Re: squeeze VLC amd64 MP4 playback still broke

2010-07-25 Thread Christophe Mutricy

 I'm running testing on AMD64 and I've just apt-get dist-upgraded this
morning. I was happy to see vlc getting updated but MP4 playback is
broken for me and has been for the last month or two. When I
originally installed squeeze a few months ago, vlc MP4 playback was
working fine but then an update from a while ago caused the playback
of MP4 files to be rotated 90 degrees to the left and squashed up into
about one third of the horizontal window space available. Note that I
can still play MP4s fine under (s)mplayer and that I'm using the FOSS
 radeon (not radeonhd) xorg driver.

Please report bugs the correct way i.e. with reportbug.

My bet is that you have some unofficial libavcodec or libavutil package
installed.
Also using xv has video output module should avoid the problem ( and it
would work better anyway)

Bug#591011: libprojectm-dev: Incorrect .pc files

2010-07-30 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Package: libprojectm-dev
Version: 2.0.1+dfsg-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

Hello,

The .pc.in of projectm use a variable which doesn't exist resulting in a empty
libdir. That results in a buggy -L in LDFLAGS.

Attached patch forces libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib . It's not necessarly the best
fix but I don't know CMake enough.

I can commit the patch myself if you like though I'll be away from Internet
from Monday.

Which does nothing except generating some build and lintian harmless
warning and reducing the Ubuntu diff.
So it's really a political decision. Not sure it's the good time to add
it when this upload will need to be agreed by the release team.

Or, we could reorganise the changelog to put the security fix more
prominently, so that people don't read further.

Opinions ?

Bug#591287: vlc from experimental cannot be build with the curent unstable version (I even wonder how it can have been produced)

2010-08-20 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Hello,

Why are you highjacking a bug report about libmatroska for a bug on vlc ?!

To report a new bug use 'reportbug'

Also the subject field is not meant to contain the whole bug report.

- Message d'origine -
Normally its a critical bug when you cannot rebuild...

It isn't mandatory to be able to build experimental package on unstable. So
it's not a bug.
Pbuilder by example is able to pick the needed build-deps from experimental.
And for a simple dpkg-buildpackage it's your job to make sure the build-deps
are satisfied.

Bug#592462: Solved: dump your old config files

Le Fri 20 Aug 10 à 20:37 -0400, Dave Witbrodt a écrit :
Then I noticed that vlc was still remembering the old recent files
playlist from stuff I had played on version 1.0.6. But if I had blown
away the config files, how was it remembering? So, maybe there are
 other config files, right?

 A quick

 find -name '*vlc*'

in $HOME found a directory called '.config/vlc'. Moving that out of the
way restored video. All the video formats I have files to test have
worked, so everything was actually just fine all along.

Scanning for tips about this in

 /usr/share/doc/vlc/{changelog,NEWS,README}*

revealed no direct statement that configs were incompatible between
versions 1.0* and 1.1*. What baffles me is: how could they be
incompatible, since they moved? Maybe vlc looks in both places now?
Does it get confused if it finds old configs and tries to use them?

The change actually happened between 0.9.x and 1.0.x . But config files
shouldn't create problem like that. Do you happen to still have the old
config file ? I'd be interrested by having it ( or a diff -u with the
new config file)

Can we please have something about this in the vlc man pages and/or
/usr/share/doc/vlc? I have a feeling a lot of Debian vlc users are
going to get burned by it.

I'll add a note in the debugging tip presented when you launch
reportbug.

Bruno,

Could you try to remove/move away ~/.config/vlc/

It's hard to tell without a log and the name of the file tried as

My guess at this point is that the non ASCII filename confuse VLC.

though you mount them with proper password, this is when the mentioned

If they are mounted, you shouldn't use smb:// but /mnt/smb_mounted/
(or file:///mnt_smb_mounted/... )

 Hi

Tried libavutil50 with a reinstall and it didnt resolve the issue,
although the package definitely came from standard repository in
 unstable.

As shown on
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=libavutil50searchon=namessuite=allsection=allsourceid=mozilla-search
libavutil50 is not in unstable. And you need to remove it not reinstall
it.

Trying with libva-x11-1 of unstable (1.0.1-3) and the one of
experimental(1.0.4-1), it works with unstable and not with experimental.

So it seems that some symbols (at least vaDisplayIsValid) disappeared

CVE-2011-0531 - VLC - MKV improper input validation

execution. PoC MKV targetted at windows make possible to start calc.exe.

VLC 1.1.7 fixes this issue.

I have taken the upstream patch and prepared an upload in our git[2] in

It's not what I said. I didn't ask you to un-install libavcodec, util,

I asked to not used packages from some un-official repo (looking like
debian-multimedia.org) and to use the official repo. The easiest way to
do that might be to uninstall libavcodec, vlc and co; fix your

I don't know of any solution to fix it properly. For a personal fix you
can install the libva1 of squeeze and then 'pin' it in your

We think it's a bug of britney, the script which handle the

44100 Hz joint-stereo' stream), started to sound HORRIBLE.

What was the previous version ?
Try vlc -A alsa and vlc -A pulse

Thank you for taking care of dvbpsi.

Just a note as I've seen you uploaded a new version for libdvbpsi5. The
aim is to drop it and only keep libdvbpsi. Currently the only package
depending on libdvbpsi5 is dvblast. Afaik ivoire already did the
modification in debian/control. I think we were just waiting for an
excuse to ask for sponsorship and upload. So if you feel like checking
the 1.2-2 changes and uploading, it would be great

Bug#627124: nmu: vlc_1.1.9-1

2011-05-17 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: binnmu

Hello,

We failed to follow proper protocol for the (micro-)transition for libdvbpsi.
Sorry.
The only affected packe is vlc.

On sparc the vlc-nox already depends of libdvbpsi7 because vlc on sparc was
built much later than other arches.
On all other arches, vlc-nox depends on libdvbpsi6 and so needs to be rebuilt.

nmu vlc_1.1.9-1 . amd64 armel i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips
mipsel powerpc s390 . -m Rebuild to pick libdvbpsi SONAME bump

Attached are two examples of VLC's output.

/usr/share/doc/vlc should be a symlink to /usr/share/doc/vlc-nox.

So I think at some point during upgrade i guess the directory was not
empty or removed before the symlink was created

There is a +b3 which should be in your mirror or on its way to it. I

Also, it's very good to provide gdb logs but it's missing the most
interresting which is the full backtrace (bt or even thread apply all
bt)

The crash in libwebkitgtk-1.0.so.0 is quite strange

The +b3 needs this lib, which is only available in unstable:

ah ok no problem to keep +b2 and debug with that

Subject: libdvbpsi7 version 0.2.1-1 is broken!
 To: pkg-multimedia-maintainers@lists.alioth.debian.org

 Hello,

You have recently updated libdvbpsi7 from 0.2.0-1 to 0.2.1-1 for debian sid
and this caused all programs using this library to stop work. For example -
no epg in vlc (recent version) and it's not possible to change dvb-t channel
from main vlc menu. Everything works again after downgrading libdvbpsi7 to
 0.2.0-1.

I think you should fix something, it seems new version is broken.

 Let's try again... I've reverted to 1.1.11-2+b2:

The last upgrade is certainly not the culprit. I strongly suspect
1.1.4-1 - 1.1.5-1
I don't know if there is a way to have the package force the symlink to
be created.

To fix, i suggest:
apt-get remove vlc; rm -rf /usr/share/doc/vlc; apt-get install vlc

Will have to think a bit on how to fix that automatically

As you mention it comes from libdvdread.so.4. So it's likely to be a bug
in libdvdread. Sadly there is no -dbg package for libdvdread. Else a
backtrace produced with gdb would help

Bug#662774: liblivemedia-dev: Why no shared lib?

2012-03-06 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Not that I am aware of. It's probably not provided, because upstream's
build system does not support it.

Excatly.

Upstream uses custom Makefile. You could edit the Makefile.tail files
and add support to build a shared library.

And take care of proper SONAME, ABI/API changes management
