No, this will work a bit differently and I don't think the bitrate
limiting will be an issue.

Volume is actually more of an issue since you don't have access to the
system volume on iPhone.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2009-06-18 Thread pippin

Basky,

iPeng works a bit different than the controller.
The controller is typically logically connected to a single player and
moves the player along when you switch to another source.

iPeng, in contrast, is connected to a server and can control multiple
players almost simultaneously.
This means, you will have to switch the player to SN or to SC
independent of iPeng itself, that's what the globe icon is for.
So the process would be to first move the player to the other source
and then switch to the source.
You can find more about this here:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-application/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

I agree this is currently not completely user friendly and it will
become simpler in 1.2 (the current plan is that iPeng will ask you to
switch players, too, when changing sources).

On Softsqueeze 2, that's a second player. You can have many players
connected to one server and on that screen you can get an overview over
these and have some direct control over them.
SoftSqueeze is the software player that comes with SqueezeCenter.

No. Unfortunately not.
Talk to the author of the plugin (lsmitho). He promised to make some

Anything that is either CLI or a Controller menu not requiring LUA

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

2009-06-19 Thread pippin

I agree this would be a cool feature.
However, I believe it's a server enhancement or plugin.

As Dingostrategy pointed out, the information is in the stream and the
server extracts it from there while playing (it can take up to a minute
or so for some streams until the info comes along). Now the stream is
typically not going to iPeng, but to a player so now way iPeng can
extract that info itself.
Of course it could subscribe to the stream and render it but I would
regard that as too resource-heavy an operation.

How about filing an enhancement request at bugs.slimdevices.com?

Yep. Exactly.
I will have to digg into iPhone 3.0's library/player control to see
whether I can evaluate the buttons but I think I will not do this.
The problem is: I can definitely not INFLUENCE the behavior (as you can
see with the volume which always also changes the system volume) and I
think it's quite confusing to, say, start playback on the iPod to pause
a track on your Squeezebox.

One minor thing: If there's no CD in the drive I now get CD tray is

I don't know about Windows Home Server but if it can use a WOL packet

In iPeng (the app, not the plugin) you can configure a MAC for WOL that
will be sent whenever the app becomes active.

Please note that you have to use a wired connection to your router to
support this since WOL does not work over WiFi (because WiFi would have
to communicate and thus be fully powered up to acquire packets).

Now changing the plugin or the plugin options in SqueezeCenter will not

You currently can't do that right now in the app. It will probably be

I want to amend the options on the bottom toolbar to get rid of year

Now THAT is something you CAN do. Just press Edit on the Title Bar in

Although it will not work for Last.fm, only Main Menu items can be put

I do also have a half-finished 0.6 version that works completely within

OK, I'll probably might give this a try some time when the SDK is
formally out.

As opposed to the majority of developers on that forum I believe the
Choice of JS is a very smart idea. Java Script is VERY well suited for
an environment like that - almost anything you could imagine to need
(library wise) for a service client app is available fo JavaScript and
it doesn't need to be slow these days, especially if you don't have to
go the double-route of running it from within a Browser. Jiggy on
jailbroken iPhones was a very good example of this.

Sounds interesting.

No :-)
Known.
Go to Settings-iPeng Settings-Flush Cache.

The problem is the playlists are being cleared on every rescan, even if
there's no changes. However, iPeng doesn't catch that if there were no
changes (and the server was shut down in between).
Will get better with the next version.

I'll have to check. I have an idea how I could do this but it will use
quite a bit of power and it may not be worthwhile compared to keeping
the connection open.
What I can NOT do is a kind of sleep mode that powers down the app
and wakes it on accelerator events, I can only have the app running at
full power (except for screen lighting) or let the screen saver shut it
down.
BTW, LCD screens don't burn in.

The above is exactly how the controller worked and it was a dream just

OK, could you issue a ticket for this? The trac page (actually the

have you ever used German somewhere in iPeng?
iPeng is supposed to pull the localized strings from the server
(depending on the server settings you use). It will take one restart
until all are active.

All DEFAULTS are in English, so if you see German somewhere, you must
have pulled that off a server - may be SN.
Is your SN account's language setting maybe set to German?

Hm, this sounds like several issues.

Could you try whether Settings-iPeng Settings-Forget Last Server
helps?

If SqueezeNetwork only works intermittently, something with iPhone
internet connection could be wrong.

And if you can only reach your local host through dyndns: could it be
you are not connected to the local network but only get access through
internet (through the cellular network)?

What is you iPhone's IP adress in the WiFi settings?

If you can't convince it to remember the configuration, please try to

Do you switch servers a lot? Please note that if you configure items

some other quirks.

One of my devices, for example, right now has a config data set with a
corrupted (manually added) server in the config. Doesn't matter in this

there.

Only happens with AppStore updates, never if I manually update a

 7. Just for giggles I went to router and portfoward 9090 to the sever

OK, crashing after 6s with a 7.3.3 server sounds bad, never had that.
A few things to check:
On Penguinlovesmusic.com only these issues refer to the App, the rest
is about the plugin and apply to you:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-application/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/known-issues/
So your #2 doesn't apply here.
also, #6 should have no effect as should #7 (iPeng doesn't use port
9090).

Apart from that:
1. Could you check whether all your players really have names. That
bug's supposed to fix but I can't test this very well since a player not
having a name is not a legal state in SC and thus I can't reproduce it.
You can change a player name in the SqueezeCenter settings under
Players
2. Are you sure there is no other machine on your network running
SqueezeCenter 7.4? If so, temporarily shut it down until you have
connected iPeng to your main server.
3. I don't believe the issue is that you can't connect to the server
since I don't believe iPeng crashes after 6s without a server. In any
case, you can add a server if you turn off wifi, start iPeng and then go
to Settings-iPeng Settings.

If all this doesn't help, could you grant me access to your server? You
would have to forward port 9000 (not 9090) on your router.

iPeng native seems to crash when I use it against latest 7.4 svn

 standard browse menus.

Oh yes, that's not what I mean. That this:

I've got a beta that works. But it doesn't see TrackStat.

What did you do to change the name?
Flashing red means it's being set up, power up the controller and try

Is your server still running?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iPeng support thread

Help is your friend :-)

You have probably moved your player to SqueezeNetwork using the globe
icon.
If you don't use SN anyway, the best way to get it back may be to log
into your SN account on www.squeezenetwork.com, go to players and
click disconnect.
If you play to use SN with iPeng, you can also register iPeng with SN
(by selecting SqueezeNetwork und Music Sources on the screen that
confused you).

You get to and from that screen by swiping left/right on the NowPlaying
screen.
You can learn more about this and SN/SC here:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-application/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

is making it so difficult to find the player.

I don't believe it's the one incorrect selection but the sequence of
powering things up and down after that which makes it difficult.
Please also check whether your SqueezeNetwork information in
SqueezeCenter is correct, the player will be connected to the account
given there if you select the move to SN option.

dun recall the previous versions were that slow in loading up the

You mean a clear and rescan?
If you do that, the artwork cache on the server side is cleared and
SqueezeCenter has to re-create the thumbnails for iPeng. This can slow
things down on slower servers,
It helps in SqueezeCenter to set
Settings-Advanced-Performance-Artwork Resampling to Resize Artwork

I really don't like this screen - i have 4 players so need to scroll
up/down to see them all. The screen doesn't seem to scroll very well
and trying to scroll regularly changes the volume, selects another
player or tries to switch to SN.

Me too, it's currently in the process of being completely redone.

On each of the player panels there is power, volume, connect to SN,
play and a wavy line. I think the wavy line is the 'sync' icon but
touching it seems to give very unpredicatble results -

touching any player seems to select the bottom control and highlights
it briefly. Touching the wavy line highlights the player controls in
white and keeps the highlighted. Sometimes i can get the wavy line to
have a cross through it but can't work out how. Sometimes the player
panel shrinks slightly and has a black patch to the right side.

How about a look at the manual:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

I think this panel needs work. I think the top panels should ONLY be
used to show status and allow you to select that player - the bottom of
the screen should let you change player settings for the player
selected. The top panels are too small and it's too easy to change
 something by accident.

Well, that's two different issues.
The accidental activation and too difficult to do things are really
due to the touch detection not working very well on this screen - an
iPhone 2.x issue that will be fixed in the 3.0 builds (not by just using
iPeng on 3.0).

The usability issues root deeper and - as I said - this is going to be
re-done. Design is not yet finished but it will look a bit like the
attached:

By the way, one cool thing with the iPeng is that I can now shutdown my
NAS using my iPhone (provided the SvrPowerControl plugin is installed on

don't want it done on iPeng startup. Sometimes, I just want to use

So, would it be possible to add a user controlled trigger for the WOL

Perhaps let users configure optional WOL for any servers that they
manually add. I think that would be nice. I can use SqueezeNetwork and
when I decide to switch to my own server, iPeng will automatically wake

 work a bit intermittent.

Are there any known problems with search?

One issue: if the server sends a reply after you send a new one
(additional characters), the first response overrides the second one.
The way around is to wait a second or so before pressing search.

Apart from that, iPeng should deliver the same results as any other

OK, I tried TrackStat, DP, SQLP and CB on my Ubuntu server and while it
slowed down the server dramatically during startup (I'll send you a log,
took 15min or so to start - without scanning) after that everything
seems to work fine.

The log file is full of ridiculous comments (not only from your
plugins), e.g. on no space available. Since that's not true I assume
some permission conflict.

But starts to look real good.

It's a known issue with the detection of cache changes.
The problem is that SqueezeCenter always clears the playlists, even if
you do a only scan new and changed files rescan.

Flushing the cache is currently the only help.

It happens when you add more than one link using the add url feature.
After the first item, Squeezecenter does not get the title for the
subsequent links added through add url.
If iPeng is currently open, it may not crash right the way. However,
once you minimize it and re-open it, it will crash right after

The workaround I am using now is to manually create a m3u playlist for
the list of urls and add a title name for each one of them. Then load
 the playlist in squeezecenter.

I am using Squeezecenter Version: 7.3.4 - 27488 on Ubuntu, Squeezebox

However, I don't understand what is happening. The next day ipeng does
not find the player and I had to run udap again. I tried squeeze play
and that found the player and gave me a pin but you have to go thru this
every time you turn it on. I have the receiver hard wired and the router
 is set for DHCP.

Ok, so you do see SqueezeCenter and SqueezeNetwork and you can use
both?
That also means you know how to switch players between the sources
using the Globe icon? iPeng does not automatically move the player
between SN and SC, you have to do that manually:
http://penguinlovesmusic.de/ipeng-the-iphone-skin-for-squeezecenter/how-to-use-the-ipeng-application/nowplaying/

Now, when the next day you could not see the player, is this only in
iPeng or do you also not see it if you use SqueezeCenter/SqueezeNetwork
through the browser?
Is iPeng still connecting to the right source? On SqueezeCenter, you
will know it did if you can still browse your library?

If it's iPeng not connecting to the right source (automatically) again,
please try to set Forget Last Server in iPeng under Settings-iPeng
settings.

If all of that doesn't help, please give me some more details about
your setup: Where do you run your SqueezeCenter, which version, what did
you do last, is the Receiver's LED blinking, which color does it show?

I saw that there is an ipeng plugin for Squeezecenter but this looks
like a skin for squeezecenter and is not required for the iphone app.

correct.

Also, I don't see where ipeng has the turn on and turn off receiver
 feature of the controller.

Now here you've got me lost. There' a power button on the bottom left
of the NowPlaying screen in iPeng.

 ...
Sorry if this isn't very coherent. It seems like I am close to getting
 this to work.

Probably.
Maybe some basics on how the Squeezebox works:
A Squeezebox is a dumb device and ALWAYS needs a server to work, it
can't do anything without one.
This server is either SqueezeCenter or SqueezeNetwork.
iPeng also ONLY talks to the server, never to the player itself. The
controller can talk to the player itself, but only for configuration
purposes, you can't play music or anything with it.

So yes, until you start SC, iPeng can't see your player.
What you CAN do, is to switch your player to SqueezeNetwork (that's
more or less a SqueezeCenter on the internet), but you'll have to do
that before you shut down the server. Have a look at the SvrPowerControl
plugin if you want to have it done automatically.
If you do that, you will have to connect iPeng to SqueezeNetwork as
well to see your player. Learn more about this here:

SqueezeNetwork is not a player, but a server (source) that you can

There should not be a real limit.
iPeng reads the Albums in chunks of 100 and then 300.
Could it be it's 700, not 650?
That would mean the last chunk (of 38 Albums) doesn't get read.
If it's really 650 it sounds more like the server doesn't send them
all.
Can you see which ones are missing?

What do you see in the Web interface?
iPeng uses sorting by Year, Album under various artists, if you use
that same sorting (or Artist, Year, Album) you should get the same list
on both interfaces. This should theoretically make it easy to find out
what's missing.

That was my P.S. - I could not switch SC to squeezenetwork like I do at
another home where I set up the duet with the controller. There SC
normally asks you to choose a player and one of the choices from the
player drop down is Squeezenetwork. I know it is not a receiver/player
but a network by definition however I was not getting that option. It
would have been a lot easier if I had brought the controller back with
me since I am familiar with the process.

That's weird because it's different on my controller.
On my controller, I can select a player and it will show all players,
even the ones on SN (the next iPeng version will do that, too).
Then I can select the player and I will get connected to that player,
and the controller will switch to that server, too (the next iPeng
version will do that, too).
Now if you want to switch the source for that player (say, from SC to
SN), I have to go to Settings-Music Source and select the other Music
Source there. THEN, the Player AND the Controller will switch to the
other source (the Controller is always connected to the same source as
the player).

In iPeng, that's currently a two-step process: You first have to switch
the Player to the other source and THEN you can switch iPeng. You can
switch iPeng immediately to the other source, but there will be no
player connected to it, then.

I don't claim it's particularly convenient (especially with only a
single player) and as I said, it will work a lot better in the next
version.

For a track: If your folder has sub-folders that would be hold, too,
if you have a folder that's arranged like an album (with only tracks but

SqueezeCenter doesn't have a command to play the contents of a folder,

Little chance for digital streaming from iPhone.
You have full access to the database on the device, so it would be
technically possible to announce your library on the network and control
the iPhone/iTouch from SC with a plugin but then you have to use the

So, yes, if someone writes that plugin I'd include some code in iPeng

Apple doesn't give you access to the library. Would maybe break DRM.
I _know_ how to get it, though, but Apple tells me they won't let it

Would also be either lousy quality or a bandwidth hog and I don't know
whether iPhone would even be capable for that - the other idea would be
to use a docked hardware.

Building a plugin to access the iPod/iPhone DB would then be a breeze.

And besides SqueezeCenter, a whole new community of
application-developers would fancy that kind of interface.

Apple probably wouldn't though, would they.
Yep.
So it's currently down to a somewhat obscure use case...

Right now the only thing that annoys me isnt really a problem with the
program. For those who use locks on the phone...i was wondering if there
was a way for iPeng to ignore the lock after you put your phone down?

 Let me explain my issue..

I love to sit and listen to albums at a time, normally a hour or more
at a time. However, obviously the iphone goes into lock mode...would
there be a way to have just iPeng stay up so you can quick switch your
music after the lock out period?
iPeng has an option for that (Settings-iPeng Settings-Prevent Sleep
Mode). It won't help on the iPhone shuts off WiFi after 30min issue
though.
There will be better solutions in 1.2, for once the 30min barrier will
no longer be one since Apple fixed a bug around this in 3.0

I think it's actually a very popular use case for such an interface
would make iTunes server accessible again.

Such an app could be distributed along with iTunes clients like your
iPeng :-) and say SlimControl :-))

Err... Not iTunes.
The use case is to play songs that are on an iPhone or iPod touch
through another device with analog audio in while controlling the whole
thing through yet another device that communicates to a server with
SqueezeCenter on it.

It IS obscure.

Erland,

most of my menus still don't work. Predefined as well as own ones.
I'm now about to switch back to MySQL so let's see what happens then.

Is it just in iPeng or also in web interface and the other user

Do you get any errors in the server.log file when you enter a menu that
 doesn't work ?

All interfaces.
In the Web Interface I get

Code:

  Error:
  Running: select albums.id,if(albums.year=0,' ',concat('(',albums.year,')'))
from tracks join albums on albums.id=tracks.album left join track_statistics on
tracks.url=track_statistics.url where tracks.audio=1 group by albums.id order
by max(track_statistics.added) desc got error:
  no such function: if

That's for New Albums from the default menu list.

Right - I was beeing unclear.
I meant, you could access music on the iPod through an interface other
than DAAP (I was assuming iPods do offer a DAAP interface...)

We'll continue that discussion later, I hope :-)

Yep.
But as I said: Apple was pretty clear on this point...
And no: iPods don't offer an DAAP i/f, in fact they offer no i/f at
all.

Thanks, the important part here is the last row: no such function:
 if.

It will be fixed in next version and it will also be fixed when you
switch to MySQL as MySQL has an if function.

Ah.
It's been a while since I learned SQL and actually the only time I used
it in recent years was with MySQL.

 Hi,

I'm getting a squeezebox duet later on in the week and plan to have the
reciever connected directly to my computer using an ethernet cable.

My computer has an inbuilt wireless lan / wifi controller if that makes
 any difference.

Will I be able to use the awesome ipeng as I dont have a wireless
 router?

If SqueezeCenter runs on your computer: I believe yes. I'm doing this
quite a bit for testing except for the connect receiver directly
part.
You will have to set up a WiFi P2P network on your computer and joing
your iPhone/iTouch to this and you will need to use a crosslink cable to
connect your Receiver to the Computer. And you will probably have to set
IP addresses manually, but I'm not sure about that.

Also, don't ask me about Internet Radio on the receiver.

I use the Biography plugin (v.2.8.2) by Michael Herger.

In iPeng, long biographies are truncated, which they are not on the

 it be fixed in iPeng?

Would it be possible to fix this, if it is an iPod restriction, using a
workaround, where you in iPeng get a link to the next part of the
biography just before the truncation sets in?

I suspect that long reviews in the Album Review plugin are truncated as
 well.

I'll have to check what to do about it.
I do indeed get the full text but the view used by iPeng has a limited
size so I truncate it to not make iPeng crash.

Will think about a workaround, could you file a ticket (I knew about
this but decided to only fix it when people start to complain :-) )
