Re: [NF] Queries re: Python & Such...

2023-02-17 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

No - Ed, you got me wrong!

I am NOT at ALL against sharing code and giving it away for free! But,
he posted on a forum that is NOT Specific to programmers. And, for 3D
Printing folks - if you don't already do programming - getting that
code, by itself is no good! Since, not only do you normally have to have
an IDE/Dev Env. to run the code - many times - you need extra packages.
So - my point was - he should really share an EXE as opposed to just
purely a python chunk of code - since, most in that forum may NOT know
what to do with it!

I hope that makes more sense now...

Not funny at all. Sharing code is very commonplace in the world of free/open

I have a lot of my code on GitHub (https://github.com/EdLeafe), free for anyone

But, yes - got it. Will post questions here if need be - with the [NF]

Will say - its kinda fun to be getting back into the programming world a

of course, should I really dig in - I could put them all to Shame! But,
in a fun way - considering my extensive programming background.

Will also note...

Someone just posted on the 3D Printing forum, of which I am a member -

drop an EXE on the folks. Which I am about to suggest to the guy...

[NF] Queries re: Python & Such...

2023-02-15 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Hey there folks,

So, I know there is a Leafe mailing list for Python, as I just looked on
the Leafe mailing lists website. But, sadly - unlike this one - it
pretty much looks dead. Sad - since I was just beginning to get back
into some Python programming again.

I did notice that even this forum has gotten to be VERY Quiet. Sad indeed!

Truthfully, I have not seriously done any FoxPro since like 2020, and
even that was a Small personal project. Last serious work was in like
Nov 2017. And, I know that FoxPro usage in general is dying off across
the world...

Anyway - back to the topic at hand: Python.

In my case, I'm actually using the PySimpleGUI to build UI's. Its a
project I'm coming back to, as it was mothballed about a year ago - due
to a big round of layoffs at the 3D Printing co. where I was working. So
- yeah, FYI - I'm back at that co. - they hired me back last year in
Oct.!  I'm pretty thrilled to be back - especially as it truly is my
Dream Job!

Anyway - short synopsis of tool I am working on.

If someone is printing a REALLY Large print job - which can literally
take like 5 days or more to run, problem is - if you get an error on the
machine that can not be recovered from. It can be a pretty Epic fail -
not only because all the lost hours, but, also costs of filament. For
instance - a special filament like Ultem - can run a customer like $750
for 2.5Kg of the stuff. So, if a customer runs a big print job - and
they are on the 2nd spool - and printer dies 1/2 way thru that spool -
you have essentially thrown like $1100 Down the Toilet!

The tool I am creating will essentially take a massive GCode file, and
based upon criteria - find out where it left off printing. Then, remove
all the lines of code that have already been printed - but, making sure
some of the GCode lines at the top, like print temperatures - are still
included. Then, it will have proper lines to restart that print job.

Anyway - probably TMI in regards to this posting. But, if anyone could
point me in the direction of a forum similar to this one - where I could
get some help in Python programming - that would be Awesome!

Thanks,
Kurt

Re: Using OpenAI like ChatGPT?

2023-02-07 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
I must say - this discussion is potentially very interesting. I was
pondering a reply here, when I only saw the Subject line - but, didn't
read the actual message content.

The reason being, is because folks at my job (all Engineers) have been
recently discussing ChatGPT - including actually playing around with it.
In fact, one or 2 of the guys have actually been using ChatGPT to
generate Python code. And, myself - I'm actually digging back into doing
Python coding for work. I may try the ChatGPT myself to see what it can
do in regards to generating Python code.

I will say, since Python is a modern code, where as VFP is more like
Legacy programming code - I think ChatGPT would have MUCH Better results
for creating Python code that works vs. VFP code.

Re: [NF] Understanding Rackspace documentation

2022-05-12 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
Actually - I believe the Big Kahuna here - Ed Leafe - he worked for
RackSpace if I am not Mistaken!!!

On 5/12/2022 11:10 AM, Frank Cazabon wrote:

Hi,

anybody here ever had to do anything with Rackspace's  Storage API to
move objects around?

I think I've seen Rackspace mentioned here before so I'm hoping.

I've got to copy a file from one container to another (actually it's a
lot of files but I'm just trying to prove the concept).

I've managed to get the authentication sorted out which was defined
like this:

$ curl https://identity.api.rackspacecloud.com/v2.0/tokens  \
 -X POST \
 -d
'{"auth":{"RAX-KSKEY:apiKeyCredentials":{"username":"yourUserName","apiKey":"$apiKey"}}}'
\

 -H "Content-type: application/json"

I was able to translate that like this:

m.lcUrl = "https://identity.api.rackspacecloud.com/v2.0/tokens;

TEXT TO lcAuthBody NOSHOW TEXTMERGE
{
  "auth": {
    "RAX-KSKEY:apiKeyCredentials": {
  "username": "<>",
  "apiKey": "<>"
    }
  }
}
ENDTEXT

LOCAL loXmlHttp AS Microsoft.XMLHTTP

loXmlHttp = Newobject( "Microsoft.XMLHTTP" )
loXmlHttp.Open( "POST" , m.lcUrl, .F. )
loXmlHttp.setRequestHeader("Content-Type","application/json")
loXmlHttp.Send( m.lcAuthBody )

I can then pull the token out of the loXmlHttp.responsetext

Now I want to use this token to copy a file from one container to
another.

The documentation here
(https://docs.rackspace.com/docs/cloud-files/v1/storage-api-reference/object-services-operations#copy-object
) gives this example:

COPY /v1/account/sourceContainer/sourceObject  HTTP/1.1
Host: storageURL
X-Auth-Token: yourAuthToken
Destination: /destinationContainer/destinationObject

I don't know how to interpret this to make an xmlhttp call.

1. What is the url for the end point? I've got the account,
sourceContainer and sourceObject but not sure what comes before the /v1/

2. I'm unaware of a COPY type of Http request, so what should that be?

3. Even trying various things in PostMan aren't helping :(

Was that REALLY the cost for CompuServe? Yikes!

I was there at the beginning - I did CompuServe & Prodigy and even
dabbled in AOL Online briefly - which, years later - all non-computer

of the Early BBS systems. And, I was doing online banking with Chemical
bank via modem & later as Chase Online via true internet (when they
bought over Chemical & MannyHanny) - so, I was doing online banking
before most common folks.

Yeah - the days of Modems - what FUN!!!

Funny side story. Its the reason when I was married - that my wife (now
Ex) - INSISTED I get my own phone line - because I was doing the modem

Re: Accessing/processing archived emails

2022-04-12 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

You're quite welcome Paul!

And, wow - 894 hits on the ProFox search is a LOT!

Interesting find on the eMClient. Can you pass us some info on it here.
As I may want to take a lookat that myself and try it - since I also use
Thunderbird. And, actually have a couple outstanding issues with access
of some emails and folder.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply and suggestion, Kurt.

Searching for "thunderbird" in the ProFox archive returns 894 matches!
However I did find one useful thing for starters - an e-Mail client (eM
Client) with which I was able to import all the MBOX messages.

Have you tried doing a search of ProFox archives for the word Thunderbird?

Hi all

I have several (Windows Explorer) folders containing archived TB
(Thunderbird) emails which I want to review and clean up (i.e. get rid
of for good). These folders have an SBD extension and these
correspond to TB's folders. They contain files with no extension
(these contain the actual
emails) and which I believe are "MBOX" files. They also contain files
with an MSF extension which apparently contain summaries of the MBOX

contents.

One possible approach might be to set up TB or another email client
which works with MBOX type files. I made a first attempt at this with
TB but got stuck at the stage where it wants details of incoming and
outgoing server accounts (I don't want to set up an account).

Another approach might be to export all the MBOX messages as
individual EML files. Here any recommendations for free/cheap
solutions without limitations would be helpful - I have used
Thunderstor in the past but now can only find a trial version with no

means to upgrade.

The idea then would be to use VFP to parse the EML files for subject,
sender, recipient, date and content as well as to decode and save any
attachments.

Any ideas or suggestions regarding either approach (or a different
approach) will be most welcome. In particular, I would not want to
reinvent the wheel regarding the parsing of the EMLs - so if anybody
knows of any tools or existing code that could be helpful .

I like that Enchilada. But, If I remember right - since I did this a
good bit when I was working a lot in VFP - you don't need to distribute
the VFP9.exe file. If you Create an EXE - all you then need to do is
pass along the DLL files with your project EXE - and then the EXE should
run...

Interesting feedback about Facets. And, funny joke about her Hunt for

wrong - and doesn't really have a clue.

Either that, or Facets is SO Old - that's why its not appearing as an
actual DB, but, rather - certain DB Engines can maybe import Facet type
data. But, at this point - I wouldn't worry about it.

Myself - I'm not going to worry about it either!

[NF] Facets Database???

2022-03-04 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Hey folks - anyone every heard of this kinda DB before? Myself - Never!

So, I was surprised when this headhunter reached out to me about a job
doing this stuff. And, I confirmed - she insists the person must
obviously have hands-on experience with it. This is the info about the
Gig and her info (she connected with me on LinkedIn - so you can connect
with her there):

 Facets Database Developer

*Hi there! We’re searching for a database developer with strong Facets
experience. This role will potentially be a role that will be contract
to hire, but in the meantime it’ll be 100% remote and a contract.  The
role will be gathering all information regarding the intended functions
of the Facets database and configuring, and designing and creating
appropriate frameworks. Do you know someone who is a fit? We’re
interviewing asap. Lauren Daher Senior Manager, Consultant Engagement at
Catalyst Solutions*

I'd say TGIF - but, in my case - nothing to be thankful for in regards
to sliding into the weekend...

Re: Back from the Dead & MS PowerApps...

2022-02-28 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Hi there Alan,

Thanks for the reply, and the extensive feedback. Actually, Stephen
touched based with me about it, we chatted on the phone. It was good
getting to catch up with him - as it was a while since last I spoke to
him. He did let me know that the full blown version of PowerApps, if you
have the 365 license, lets you connect to almost any kind of data
source, including things like MS SQL. Too bad that reporting is an
afterthought, considering how VFP kicks butt at it! I will indeed have
to check out that Tutorial link you sent me.

Thanks again,
Kurt

'Dataverse For Teams' also. For serious LOB applications for end users you or
your customer would need the full PowerApps on your Office 365 subscription. As
ever with these low-code tools, it's great until you start hitting edge cases
but I was quite impressed.

Of course business application style reporting and printing is a distinct
afterthought as it seems to be with every tool that isn't Visual FoxPro ;)

Take a look at April Dunnam's excellent Youtube tutorials.

Hey there folks,

I know its been a while since many of you last heard from me. Yeah, I
used to be Very Active on this forum some years ago. I did manage to get
an Awesome 3D Printing job last year in July, it was Truly my Dream Job.
And, that's not an exaggeration. But, alas - situation went FUBAR, and
the co. let go 40% of workforce between Cali & Texas operations -
including me...

So, I'm Back to Searching for a job, and also back to maybe being a
little more active on here. As I'm now looking at programming jobs, as
well as 3D Printing related jobs.

Anyway, I came across this job listing, which of course mentioned
FoxPro. But, then it also mentioned MS PowerApps. I'd Never heard of
that. And, a quick search seems to show you can do Drag screen
design, with little coding required.

As such, I was curious to know if Anyone here had any experience with
that!?!?

OK, its back to the job search now. I look forward to hearing back from
the Hive Mind here.

Kurt

[NF] OMG - TeamViewer is Changing!

2020-03-07 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
So - a few days I was driving south on the 405 here in LA. And, most of
you are probably already familiar with the really big Digital billboards
that are popping up all over America - on the sides of major highways.

Well, I see this one - with an Ad for The Walking Dead (one of my
favorite shows) - but, in the lower left 1/3 of the sign is this Blue
Box! And,  as I got closer, I saw it said "TeamViewer is Changing"! I
had to laugh my ass off at that technical glitch. Am sure most folks
driving by had no idea as to what is TeamViewer. But, it sure was funny!

Lastly, as I'm now located in LA - if anyone here is local to LA and
wants to meet up for Beers & some Tech talk - feel free to drop me a line.

Kurt

Re: Hacker's Guide, Section 4, now live on github.io!

2019-12-29 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
Hey Ted - thanks for letting us know about this. Its pretty cool. I
really like that pic of the fox in a wizard type outfit. Am curious to
know Doug's thought process in regards to posting this specific chapter.
I mean, yeah, I get it - its listing all the commands and how they work.

I also really like the quote - the 1st 1 from Alice & Wonderland, and,
then I saw the one from a band, as I was looking at COS(). And, that
brought back distant memories.

Back in the early 80's - if people had an Apple or a PC computer in
their homes (and it was very few) - I could in about 10 minutes write a
small program that would spin a line around and essentially draw a
circle. I used the Cartesian to Polar coord. systems conversion - using
Sine & Cosine functions - to spin angles & gen X coord's - and, people
were always blown away when I would do that on there computer. Yeah -
literally about 10 min. to create the program and have it running. It
was cool, since it was early CG, and showed not only the power of a
personal computer - but the power of math and a couple of simple math
functions!

Re: FoxPro 2.6a for Chromebooks

2019-09-02 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Damn Eric - that is a Helluva Great Story!!! I love it!

I worked a prior job where it was a consulting co. that created database
system apps or updated/maintained existings types of apps(like SBT). It
was mostly all russian programmers - and I was essentially a project
manager - and the direct contact with many of the clients. Well, one
client - with whom I actually DID do some of the FoxPro programming work
myself - and they had Macs (it was a publisher for Wine Spectator &
Cigar Afficianado mag's). And, they were also using FileMaker. I think I
DID do some interfacing to that app - possibly to extract data - but, it
was a long time ago - so don't remember much about that job.

However, on a related note to your college experience. I actually put a
team of students together to do a special independent type project. I
think it was maybe 6 or 8 of us. Generally in pairs - like 2 worked on
creating the GUI, 2 of us doing the coding for the mathematical data
manipulation (the whole app was a CG type app - allowing interesting
experimentation with mathematical types of CG) - and 2 of them were
doing documentation. It was all based upon an art type class I took at a
previous college. And, the head of the comp. dept. liked my idea of
making an app and running it as a kind of independent study course for a
team of students. So - yup - we got credit for doing it. Sadlly - I hate
to admit it - it didn't work out too well - and I don't think we ever
properly finished a truly functional app...

about any independent work I'd been doing for the University. I told him
about my project for the sailing club, and he gave me a credit of
independent study. Boom - FoxPro helped me get my degree in Computer
Science.

A few years later I went into the boathouse. They'd already updated their
membership tracking app to something else using FileMaker. I wonder if
whoever did that got credit?

Re: Easiest/best way to create an email using local MS Outlook with file attachments?

2019-08-21 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Wow - Deja vu!

I joined this forum Circa 2008 - and, previously I was at a job and had
to do Exactly this! It was maybe circa 2005-06. YEs, I did indeed do
this via Office Automation. There was a great book out there - all about
doing OA - and that's how I ended up doing the project. I too needed to
do attachments as well.

Book w/all answers is by Hentzenwerks (probably misspelled that!). But,

What's the BEST (and hopefully easiest) way to implement this? Invoke
Outlook via CREATEOBJECT and set properties and attachments
accordingly?  Typically in the past I've used MAILTO and ShellExec but
this time the extra requirement is to have files attached from the
application too, which makes MAILTO not an option, if I understand
correctly.

Re: vfp9 exe

2019-07-23 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
Why not create a single file - with a single record, a File Lock Flag.
So - when a user goes to reindex files - they MUST Lock that one record
1st. Then, at the startup of your system - for regular users - the
system must check that flag & record to see if someone locked it and is
indexing files.

It's a thought...

using the exe in a specific folder. We allow many users to have their
own unique folder with their patient data files.

So we log into folder 1 and another user is in folder 2. No problem.

If we log into folder 1 and another user is in that same folder, again
no problem. Our software is multi-user down to the individual record
level. The problem is when the 2nd user comes in and needs to lock
many or all files to reindex or other procedures. How can the 2nd user
know that another user is there? Again it is not a problem until that
1st user starts to do something, almost anything that requires
accessing files. All files are locked by the 2nd user so the 1st user
starts getting errors.

We could try to lock the exe and that would fail so we would know
someone else is using the software. However, if that other user is
working with data in a different folder, we don't care so we do not
want to lock the exe.

Hope that is clear

software like Webmail should have a better (complete?) user interface.)

Hey there Ed - yeah, I hear ya. I hang out here - mostly cause its a
place full of familiar "Faces"/names - and thus a lot of the time I do
it more for the camaraderie!

And - yes, the new gig probably will Kick Arse! And, since I will be
working with a guy who runs a 3DP biz - there is the potential to work
with him to help me bring some of my creative product designs to market.
Will try to follow-up here in the near future to let people know how

First, I admit that I have not set up web sites in over 15 years, but
I manage over 10 web sites on Webfaction and they all work fine -
until recently when I can't seem to access files in a subfolder.

Digitalocean.com uses something they call 'projects', 'droplets' and
'spaces'. Sorry, but I guess I am too old and I have not kept up.
Those mean nothing to me. Projects I guess I can figure out. but
droplets? Google (my wonder answer to all questions) does not give me
anything that I can understand.

Spaces? I guess that is a 'space' on the server? I was able to set up
a 'space' (whatever that is) and I could copy files to it using their
utility. All that is fairly obvious. After getting that far, i was
able to ask Google a question it could answer and I found other users
who had the same issue that I had. What I wanted was internet storage
with a URL that worked in a browser. Is that asking too much? Another
'answer' to someone's question stated that there was no concept of a
subfolder?? That simply makes no sense to me. So all the files must be
in the root of the space? crazy. I know I must be missing something.

Maybe I am getting too old for this stuff? I am a good programmer in
fox for over 30 years and I have designed over 20 web sites using hand
coded html including a web site for my kids middle school. It works on
Webfaction except for this new issue since they sold out to GoDaddy?
You would think I could get through all these new terms (new to me). I
must have read a dozen tutorials and websites with questions and
answers and it simply 'does not compute'.

If anyone else tries to use digitalocean for a simple html website and
is successful, I would like to know how, a link, anything that would
help.

Re: Google API for Geocoding ... Again

2019-02-04 Thread Kurt @ Gmail
The pay for this gig is So Small - that it would not be worth it to pay
for any SW to assist with this task.

As is, I found simple code to allow me to open a URL within a Browser
window/tab from within VFP. And, I did Google Mapping between locations
for directions - and figured I could just pass this as a URL. So - I
made this little app that allows me to plug in up to 4 locations (as the
woman would make multiple stops) - with the start & end of her trip
being her home location. So, although its rather simple - it works for
my purposes.

Thank you everyone for your input on this!

using either vfpconnection or the Microsoft html thing ( I can be more specific
if required)

the ##ADDRESS## is replaced with a postcode for instance

http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/geocode/json?address=WS98ER

You used to be able to do this all day long (there was a throttle that kicked
in at some point based on your IP address but the limit was something like 5000
calls a day)

These days I believe you need an API key which you would need to pass in with
the query to get your JSON back with the lat and lng in.

I believe you need a paid for account now but you get $200 dollars usage credit
each month for the API which I think for modest usage is plenty.

So - Ted - I was curious about your hack. I actually HAVE a LONG Time

no longer remember what the VFP code was to do exactly that. Can you
maybe throw me a bone here on how to launch IE from inside VFP? I
suspect it DOES have something to do with the Run command in VFP...

The responses back from the requests are all JSON from a Java Script API run by
Google. I have looked over Rick's Westwind site to try and get a start on using
this method to get back a JSON response but seem to be getting nowhere fast. Anyone
got any ideas on a simple & neat way of retrieving this data back using VFP
programmatically? Either that or anyone know a free Geocoding site that would
handle up to 100 name and address calls per day ideally by sending a text file and
receiving one back which could be automated from the VFP end.

Never even looked at Web services in anger before so it all seems a little
baffling and terribly long winded at the moment unless I am missing something
obvious.

Note I don't want to have to drop into an intermediate program/language to
accomplish this, if possible.

haven't figured out where that gets set, especially when using environments.

You can't specify operating system paths in the import command; those modules
need to be in known locations where Python can find them. When you install

directory of your environment. I started to write a big long explanation here,

It’s a monthly limit on the number of messages. And as Ted pointed
out, each post gets sent to each subscriber: 475 as of last May,
though it’s down to 474 as of Jan1
(https://leafe.com/archives/msg/512459). So that’s where the 133K
comes from.

Ah, I see this now.  Please disregard my last post.

Re: [ADMIN] Testing new mail relay

2019-01-09 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Mike - yeah, both Ed & Ted already answered that Q.

Issue is - its the monthly emails Times the total # of subscribers -
which equates to the large 133K # total!

Ed - I really do NOT think you should use this service - since its
Pricey - and there's NO Reason why you should pay for the service when
these forums don't even Net you ANY $$$!

Also - you do this same similar forum for Python - don't you? Which, if
so, increases total # of emails, and thus the monthly cost. Or, maybe
the cost is Per forum type - not grouped together...

My 2.05 centavos - upgraded for inflation...

I’m testing out a new relay service, Mailgun
(https://www.mailgun.com/). So far it seems to be running well, but if
any of you on the receiving end of things notices a problem, please
let me know.

One other issue is the cost: it’s free if the total # of emails sent
is under 100K, but gets expensive above that. Last year the highest
number of emails sent in a month was 280 in May, which is about
133,000 total emails, and that would have cost $120 for that month
(ouch!). So I’m not sure if I will keep it, but it’s worth a trial at
least.

First and foremost, thanks again Ed for doing this list!!!

Help me out with that math on the above.  280 emails in May...that
multiplied by 12 months equates to 3360 emails for the year.  Or is
multiplied by the number of folks subscribed to arrive at your 133,000
number?

VFP Work in San Diego???

2019-01-08 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Hello there folks,

I thought I would ping the group about the above Subject line question.
Actually did a quick search of my own ProFox archives before sending
this out - but, it turned up empty for SD(No - NOT Sugar-Daddies)/San Diego!

So - was curious to know if any of you are located in SD - I believe
someone is. And, if anyone knows of any possible VFP work down there. I
know some folks will chime in and suggest I should be looking for work
in other tech/programming languages. But, seriously - no need for that -
as I know what many will say. Am just curious to know about VFP work for
now - since its much easier for me to get with my background.

I've actually been searching for 3DP work in the Silicon Valley area -
but, not getting a good response to my applications.

TIA,
Kurt

Kurt's solution (doing a new search by subject) is the preferred method in

What a message footer, though!

I know it's your company's policy and not yours, but there's a legal

text mail, headers for three separate MIME sections, two JPEGS, four PNGs,
a kitchen sink, and partridge in a pear tree.

Big Changes & Fox Work in SF Bay Area?

2018-11-07 Thread Kurt @ Gmail

Hey there folks,

Yeah - I've been MIA for a little while now. I struggled to find work in
NYC area - and things just went from Bad to Worse! So - towards the end
of Sept. I made a big life change. Packed up my car - putting most of my
life in Storage - then hit the road and drove West Old Man...

About 8 days later I arrived in San Francisco - where I am now living at
my sister's place. So, I've been looking for work out here. Even applied
to a job at "X" - the special hi-tech lab of Google. They had a job for
a 3D Printing specialist. I would have been Perfect for the job - as I
had everything they wanted. But, maybe they saw me as too old, working
too many years, and probably thought I would need more $$$ than they
wanted to pay for the position - and, as such - I never heard back from
them. I even had not One but TWO Internal referrals - but, alas, that
didn't help...

I'm even looking for possible FoxPro work - which is the main reason I
am making this posting.

Anyone know of any FoxPro work in the Cali area? Preferably in the SF
Bay area. Although, I will consider elsewhere in Cali.

TIA!
