I no longer receive the error when opening up QGIS so just assume that the
error has been fixed; perhaps I may receive it tomorrow morning again if that
is the case so I will wait and see.

Hi Chris (cc to dev list),

Your QGIS is requesting 'https://ubuntu.qgis.org/version.txt'.
Problem is that ubuntu.qgis.org does not have a valid certificate (yet).

Not sure since when that url is used, but in my view it should be just
'https://qgis.org/version.txt'.
(Well, in my personal opinion, it should not even phone back anyway, unless
people press a button to do this)

Anybody knows how ubuntu.qgis.org ended up in this builds?

Because there was also a question recently about a ubuntu.qgis.org repo, I just
added it as ALT-name to the certificate.

So Chris, it should now 'just work' :-) .
Let me know if not.

Regards,

Richard Duivenvoorde

I just opened QGIS 2.18.13 and noticed I am receiving a Custom Certificate

[Qgis-user] Layer definition file - default order bottom of layer list?

2017-10-27 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I have noticed that when adding in layer definition files they appear to be
added to the bottom of the layer list by default in QGIS (using 2.18.13); I am
wondering if this is for a reason or just how the software currently deals with
these layers?

Ideally it would be good for these to be drawn at the top or how the other
layers act (i.e if you have a layer active then the new layer appears above /
below this).

I am not sure if it is just me or not but I am wondering if this is how the lyr
files do act?

[Qgis-user] Copying multipolygon PostGIS features to shapefiles in QGIS 2.18.10

2017-06-27 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I just installed QGIS 2.18.10 and have found that I am receiving an error
message when trying to copy features from a PostGIS layer into a shapefile. The
error is:

'Errors: ERROR: 1 feature(s) not added - geometry type is not compatible with
the current layer.'

My shapefile geometry type is polygon and the PostGIS layer is a multi-polygon,
but in previous versions I was able to copy features fine. Does this mean this
is no longer possible? When creating a new shapefile in QGIS there isn't the
option to specify whether the polygon is a multipolygon or not, so not too sure
how I would be able to do this?

Thanks, Chris

[Qgis-user] Authenticated data layers - WFS / WMS differences

2017-06-01 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I have PostGIS and raster layers which are served via GeoServer 2.11 - they
have a mixture of data authentication options with different user names and
passwords using the GeoServer security options.

When adding WFS services in QGIS 2.18.9, the layers perform correctly, with
only those accessible via certain roles / users displaying within the layer
list when using the relevant username / password.

When trying to access restricted WMS / WMTS layers, I have noticed that all
layers are appearing, even those that shouldn't be accessible via the user
authentication I am using (and I seem to be able to add these to QGIS).

Are these differences to be expected between accessing WFS and WMS / WMTS
services? Ideally I would only like to be able to see the data I have access to
in QGIS - I am not sure if this is a QGIS or GeoServer question.

Thanks, Chris

[Qgis-user] Cannot upgrade to 2.18.4 QGIS?

I am using the Windows 64bit standalone installer - have others found this

As far as I know, Nyall Dawson is currently working on fixing this, as part of
his work on unique value constraints (provider provided or qgis provided where
the provider doesn't support it). But not sure about the details. Certainly,
PostgreSQL and Geopackage are top priorities for that. And his work targets
QGIS 3.x, not for 2.x

No, it is due to the fact that when splitting the feature, the newly created
feature receives the same 'fid' value (the first column in the attribute table)
as the other part, and that when creating the feature, the fid, when set, is
honoured. Hence given the duplication of fid, the failure. Before saving the
edits, you can manually unset the fid.

Although something should probably be done either in the splitting tool to
unset the fid column of the new feature. Or perhaps the provider could be made
more tolerant in the case of duplicated FID to assign a new one.

This could happen for other formats handled by OGR like spatialite (if not
going throug the QGIS spatialite provider), FileGDB, etc...

Would probably deserve a ticket in the bug tracker.

Hi Chris,

yes, now I can confirm. I forgot to test the expression builder. The issue
occurs, as you said, only when I change the rule in the 'expression string
builder' window. A workaround might be to create the expression in 'expression
string builder' window, copy it and paste it into the 'filter' text field which
retains the text. Or you could change the expression in expression builder, OK,
type a blank and delete it again in 'edit rule' window, then the expression is
retained. Anyway, I think it would be good to report the bug on

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 2.16 - Rule based labelling

2016-08-30 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi Benjamin

My process is as follows...

Using a point dataset from PostGIS, and the rule based labelling for Labels.

My rule says "CLASSIFICA" = 'Woodland Or Forest' AND "FONTHEIGHT" = 'Small',
with this I also have a scale range included.

When I try to change this (for example to "FONTHEIGHT" = 'Medium'), I click on
the browse button next to 'Test', I then manually alter the text within my
expression from 'Small' to 'Medium'.

I OK this - back at the 'Edit rule window', I do see that the text has changed
to 'Medium', I then click OK but back at my rule based labelling screen the
text still says 'Small'.

If I decide to change the expression from the 'Edit rule' window and not open
the expression, it does retain the change, so there looks to be an issue (from
my set up anyway) where it is not storing any changes within the expression
window.

I am using QGIS 2.16.1.

Thanks, Chris

Hi Chris,

cannot confirm this behavior, my expressions are retained, both when I type
them directly in the rule-list and when I type them in the "edit rule" window.
I'm using 2.16.2. Can you give more details, e.g. what does your rule look
like, what buttons do you use exactly, so I can try exactly the way you do? Did
you try the "Test" button in edit rule window to find out if your expression
works/makes sense?

Hi Chris,

I know we had to change fields called "location" and "name" to something else
("location_desc" and "xx_name") when loading data into PostgreSQL in our
thirdparty web GIS system. This was then read by Geoserver and it complained
about the reserved words. I'm not sure what version of Geoserver it is as it
is managed by our thirdparty supplier.

I now believe this might be an issue with the use of 'location' as a column
name - it loads ok using WFS 1.0.0 but 1.1.0 and 2.0.0 it does not load.

Did anything change in the specification between 1.0.0 and 1.1.0 to not allow
these reserved word types as normal columns? Are there work arounds for this
issue or would I need to rename any columns using 'location'? Is this a bug in

Not sure if this is a QGIS or Geoserver issue...

I have a WFS provided through Geoserver v2.5 - I have no issues adding layers

The store which holds the layers that are not loading has the 'Expose primary

And more specifically, this seems to relate only to the QGIS browser panel.

I used the ‘Add Layer(s) from a WM(T)S Server’ option and the layers that do
not need authentication only appear, whereas all layers appear in the browser

[Qgis-user] QGIS project not opening with WMS layer after exporting as PDF in print composer?

2016-07-21 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I came across this problem before in a previous version but seem to be having
the same issue in 2.16.0.

I have a project with a fairly simple PostGIS polygon layer and a WMS layer - I
then use the print composer to compose a basic map, and then export it to a
PDF. After saving the project and print composer, closing the project down and
trying to re-open, the project opens, but the layers do not draw up and the
'Project loaded' message stays in the bottom left hand corner along with the
blue status bar and does not move. I try to click on a layer and it goes to not
responding.

Just wondering if anyone else has this problem? As mentioned it has happened in
previous versions where I have exported PDFs with a WMS layer and then when I
try to reopen the project it seems to fail.

Thanks, Chris

Hi,

Just tested it and it doesn't seem to work with QuickMapService. It does work
if you connect through WMTS (WMS/WMTS connection).

QuickMapServices is a different technology and doesn't seem to support the tile
scale panel yet.

Hi Chris,

Yes - see Menu --> View --> Panels --> Tile Scale Panel.

Of course you need a tiled layer loaded in the project in order to enable it.

Hi Andreas

Thanks for that – I have added it but the slider is at the bottom of the menu
and I cannot seem to move it up, do I move it manually or should the map zoom
to the cached scale by just using my mouse wheel?

I am using the Positron (retina) map from the CartoDB feed on QuickMapServices.

Thanks

Hi Chris,

Yes - see Menu --> View --> Panels --> Tile Scale Panel.

Of course you need a tiled layer loaded in the project in order to enable it.

Hi Chris,

There is the "Value Map" alternative, which loads the value and descriptions
from an existing layer and you can remove that value layer afterwards. The
drawback is that it isn't a "live link". So if you change your value table you
have to manually resync the data. The values and descriptions are then stored
in the project and exported/loaded with the style.

-

There is a project just about to be started that more intelligently loads data
from PostgreSQL (project generator). But this won't be available until 2017.
Meanwhile, if your data is in PostgreSQL, you can also use the "Data driven
input mask" plugin from Bernhard Ströbl - which does exactly that, but from a
Python plugin.

Greetings,

Andreas

Hi Chris,

Yes - you need both tables in the QGIS project. I usually create a separate
group for the value list tables at the bottom of the layer manager.

resolve it?

Hi

I have several datasets loaded into PostGIS 2.0 with the owner as ‘superuser’
that has full permissions. I have then assigned select permissions to some
other users, but I am not sure if they completely have the access they require
as the DB Manager doesn’t show the spatial reference, and it says there is no
entry in geometry_columns (attached are two screenshots which show what I get).

For my superuser connection, the geometry symbol is next to the layer name and
it has all of the geometry information in the window, but for one of my select
only users it does not show – do I need to give my select only users permission
to access other tables in PostGIS? I have noticed that for larger datasets it
takes quite a bit longer for the datasets to be loaded into PostGIS as well
which leads me to believe that perhaps they are not accessing the spatial
indexes or something?

Thanks, Chris

[Qgis-user] QGIS project not opening - print composer issue / bug?

2016-02-26 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I seem to have found an issue when using the print composer with a WMTS service
which I would just like to know if it's a bug, or if it might be something
specific to my project / layers.

My scenario is I add a WMTS layer to my project, I then create a print composer
window to an A2 page size (it seems to be ok for smaller page sizes). I export
the map to a PDF using all of the default export settings (I get a message
about width / height limits but get this when exporting to a smaller page size)
and it does export.

I close my project, but when I try to reopen it, the project hangs and then
goes to 'not responding'.

Is anyone else able to replicate this? Is this a known issue?

Hi Chris,

This option does not appear on already existing feature types.

Please add a new writer (independent from the ones you already have in your
workspace) and make sure you uncheck the Option "Create Generic Spatial
Columns".

Then, in the next dialogue - the Feature Type Properties Dialogue have a look
in the "General" tab - not the "Format Parameters" tab.

Have a look at the two attached screenshots.

I am also in the 2015 edition.

Hope this helps,

Hi Chris,

Ah yes - sorry. Forgot about that.

Here are the instructions:

In FME, if you add a writer for a Postgis database have a look into the
"Parameters" dialogue. In there you find a checkbox labeled "Create Generic
Spatial Columns". --> make sure you uncheck this checkbox.

Then if you add a new Feature type you will find a drop-down box in the
"General" tab labeled with "Geometry". There you can select the geometry type,
such as "postgis_point" or "postgis_linestring".

Can you please let me know if this works for you?

Hi Chris,

This explains it.

You need to define as "geometry(WKBTYPE,srid)", e.g. "geometry(POLYGON,21781)"
for QGIS. FME has an option to do that. I just don't have at hand. I could send
you instructions on Monday, if you want.

Yes it does exist in the geometry column view but the type is listed as
GEOMETRY.

This table is being created from a non-spatial SQL Server table, and we use a
vertex creator transformer in FME to create the spatial table – we cannot seem
to explicitly specify the geometry that the spatial table should be as it is
not a spatial layer when imported?

Hi Chris,

That's true - starting from Postgis 2.0, geometry_columns is a view in the
public schema.

Did you check if that view exists and if the view contains an entry for your
spatial table?

Also make sure, when importing from FME, that you restrict your geometry type
to either POINT, POLYGON, LINESTRING, COMPOUNDCURVE or the MULTI versions. QGIS
likes a single geometry type per table, while Postgis would permit to store
mixed geometry types in the same geometry column.

Maybe you did not specify this geometry type restriction when importing your
data with FME.

Andreas

Hi Chris,

This explains it.

You need to define as "geometry(WKBTYPE,srid)", e.g. "geometry(POLYGON,21781)"
for QGIS. FME has an option to do that. I just don't have at hand. I could send
you instructions on Monday, if you want.

This table is being created from a non-spatial SQL Server table, and we use a
vertex creator transformer in FME to create the spatial table – we cannot seem
to explicitly specify the geometry that the spatial table should be as it is
not a spatial layer when imported?

Hi Chris,

That's true - starting from Postgis 2.0, geometry_columns is a view in the
public schema.

If I just scroll it once, it is fine as it will scroll in or out to the next

immediately scroll 4 or 5 times, the WMTS does not redraw and QGIS just freezes.

I am not sure if others have this problem? I know in past versions you were not
able to scroll into levels before the next level had been rendered, something
we might need to look at going back to if there is a problem with scrolling in
and out similar to web maps.

Chris,

The SLD written by QGIS is not compatible with the one expected by QGIS

The QGIS OpenGeo plugin [1] tries to solve that by converting it and modifying
it. You can upload your layers and styles to GeoServer using the OpenGeo plugin.

If you want to automate that conversion or do it manually, you will find a
convertQgsToGs() method in the sldadapter module of the plugin to do so (see
[2])

Let me know if you have questions

[Qgis-user] Problems saving layer style as SLD for use in Geoserver 2.5

2015-09-11 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I am trying to style my layers in Geoserver with the SLD files I am creating
through QGIS but am encountering some errors, for example when using diagonal
lines for a polygon layer:-

* Parsing failed for Filter: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to find
function Literal
* line 23: cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting
with element 'ogc:Filter'. One of '{"http://www.opengis.net/ogc":expression}'
is expected.
* line 24: cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting
with element 'ogc:Literal'. One of '{"http://www.opengis.net/ogc":spatialOps,
"http://www.opengis.net/ogc":comparisonOps,
"http://www.opengis.net/ogc":logicOps, "http://www.opengis.net/ogc":_Id}' is
expected.

I have read that there are some issues when trying to use SLD generated files
from QGIS in Geoserver as they are not set in the correct standard? Is that
right? Are there any plugins that might export the styles out for use in
Geoserver? I don't really want to have to write all my styles from scratch :(

My SLD is below:-

Where did you search for it?

[Qgis-user] Fill symbol with no outline... showing faint outline?

2015-06-18 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi

I am symbolising up my polygon layer which has multiple features with a simple
red fill, no outline and a 40% layer transparency. When looking at the map
though I am seeing faint white lines which represent the different features. I
am wondering what I need to do to remove these white lines as I am not
specifying an outline for the features?

Thanks

Hi Chris,

This is a known limitation of QGIS - the graphical scalebar doesn't work well
with changes in map scale. Version 2.10 (to be released in 1.5-2 weeks)
addresses this issue by introducing a new option called Fit segment width
(see image below) where the map units are adopted and the segment length varies
between min/max ranges. This works very well across all map scales.

Until then you would either have to avoid the graphical scale-bar and replace
it with a numerical one, or you have to manually adjust the scalebar after each
change in map scale ;-(

Re: [Qgis-user] Local Government for QGIS

2015-06-15 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi All

Interesting discussion – I am responsible for GIS at a small local authority in
the UK; we are an ESRI site but I have seen just how far FOSS4G has come in the
last couple of years and have now had a proposal accepted to look at migrating
our ESRI infrastructure over to PostGIS / QGIS / OpenLayers over the next year.
I’ve been impressed at how efficient FOSS is, and particularly for us where we
don’t deal with advanced analytics etc, for the tools we need FOSS can provide
these just as well, if not better in some cases than proprietary offerings.

Does anyone know of any local gov authorities that have gone completely FOSS?
i.e. built their own web app(s) and are using open source desktop and database
software?

I'm quite sure that for most regional councils here, DXF would not be enough.
The surveyors and planners that we work with all use Autodesk products. All
their work is delivered in dwg, and some do not even know that there is such a
thing as DXF.

I have not been following the Open Design Alliance lately, but including that
library QGIS would certainly be a quantum leap forward. After Radim's success
in crowd funding the implementation of GRASS 7, your suggestion indeed sounds
feasible.

Hi Micha,

That is interesting - we invested a lot in the DXF export capabilities of QGIS.
Once this is finished I am pretty sure we will also look to improve the
situation regarding the import.

Do you think import of DXF is enough or do we also need DWG support? If so, the
best bet would probably be the Teigha library from the Open Design Alliance
(https://www.opendesign.com/the_oda_platform/Teigha), which isn't available for
free - but it is the library most other GIS (eg. ESRI, Intergraph) and CAD (eg.
Bentley, Bricscad, etc.) are using. We would have to pay a membership fee, but
it allows us to redistribute the library with the software. Membership in the
consortium is affordable in my opinion.

What are your thoughts on this? Would you also be available to help with a
crowd-funding effort? Do you see options besides Teigha?

could you elaborate why it would be unrealistic to say we

From our point of view, we need support for dwg. That side of vendor lock-in
is, unfortunately, even stronger that the ties to ESRI. So we stay with Arc*
not because of the GIS capabilites, but more or less only because of the
ability to read Autocad plans and surveys.

[Qgis-user] Disable offset of symbol in key for QGIS

2015-04-21 Thread Chris Buckmaster
Hi there

I am using a PNG image to symbolise a point layer I have and use an offset for
my symbol so that is points at the precise position on my map. Unfortunately
when adding a legend to the QGIS print composer the offset is retained so it
doesn't sit directly next to my layer as below.

Just wondering if there are any ways that I can disable symbol offsets for the
key or clever work arounds?

Here is another solution that would work if you are not mapping live data, and
you can use a derived product. Convert your polygon dataset to lines. The,
use VectorDissolve to remove duplicated lines where they are overlapping.
