Hi List,

I try to rotate a map in the print composer and I have an awkward problem.
I wanted to check if I am alone in this case, or if it's a bug.

I work under Windows 7 64 Pro - QGIS is 2.0.1.

When I rotate a map in the print composer, shapefiles are cut at a right
angle (according to the north) if the transparency is not set at 0. If the
transparency is set at zero, no problems. When I rotate the map from 180
degrees it works fine too, but anything else doesn't. Output is the same if
it exported in .jpg, .pdf, ...

Enclosed the output with the print composer and a rotation of 330 degrees
and a screenshot of the print composer (the map is cached). The
transparency of the green layer is set at 5%, 0% for the red. You can see
how the green layer is cut ...

Screenshot:http://imgur.com/ZtCdfwY
Print output:http://imgur.com/3iBFwXD

This problem doesn't appear for raster with/without transparency.

I already tried to modify every option I knew, but it doesn't work.

  Any hints?
Thanks a lot
Nebi

Howdy.

I assume you have checked and unchecked the black

each layer turns on and off as you check them?

Also try a 'zoom to layer' for the csv layer.
Perhaps this is just a case of not having a
negative sign in front of the long, so your

Thanks for the responses. Using -93, 37 it gives

crashed.

I'm using the Openlayers plugin to fetch Bing aerial with labels as a

(1) When loading the Bing layer, not all tiles are loaded. Hitting F5
(refresh) will fix it so this is not too much of a problem

(2) There is a consistent unloaded column of tiles the the RHS. I can't
find a workaround for this. All I can do is clip it.

(3) The biggest issue is when using Print Composer to render to a jpg
file. In this case perhaps only 0-25% of tiles are loaded. No
workaround. See pc.jpg atttached.

I am a new user so I have much to learn so I'm not sure if this is a bug

Hi Mike!

First off, I'd strongly suggest upgrading to 2.18 (or 3.0, if you like
bleeding edge!). You'll get lots of bug fixes and improvement
behaviour over the older, unsupported 2.14 release. If you're stuck on
2.14 for some reason, you definitely should be running the final patch
release for that version, which is 2.14.22.

Do you mean for each node in the polygons, or just for the centroid?

The easiest way is to use the built-in Processing toolbox.

If you're after a lat/long for the centroid:
1. Run the "Polygon centroids" algorithm to obtain a point for each centroid
2. Run the "Export/Add geometry columns" algorithm to add a field for
centroid x/y values
3. Export to XLS/CSV/etc

If you're after a lat/long for each node:
1. Run the "Extract Nodes" algorithm to obtain a point for each node
2. Run the "Export/Add geometry columns" algorithm to add a field for
centroid x/y values
3. Export to XLS/CSV/etc

[Qgis-user] GDBTable Files

2018-06-17 Thread Mike Flannigan

I understand GDBTable Files are part of a geodatabase.
I am please to see that my QGIS 2.14.3 opens these
just fine.  That was a pleasant surprise.

I have BLM land data and Federal land data for the USA
in the GDB format.  I would like to obtain the lat/long
point data for all the polygons.  If anybody knows a
straight forward way to do that, please tell me.

I know GDAL with the FileGDB driver is one method that
may work.  I have not tried that yet.  I can also
generally get polygon lat/long data from shape files
using Perl, so I may try converting the GDBTable data
to a shape file and work from there.

Thanks for your consideration.

I don't either, but you may want to contact
him to get his opinion.

QGIS is free, so that is a positive.  It is also
very, very powerful.  It has a very fast development
cycle, which will be both good and bad for you
in different ways.  It can be self-taught, but
you may not have the time for that.  If not,
you should check into training options before you
decide.

If your users need very basic GIS functions and nothing
more, it might be better to use a simpler software, like
those supplied by Delorme or others, instead of teaching
everybody QGIS.

[Qgis-user] Complex Polygons to Simple Polygons

2018-07-07 Thread Mike Flannigan

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/45096552/converting-a-polygon-with-holes-into-multiple-simple-polygons-without-holes?s=4|132.7784

I believe I can get this done outside of QGIS, but I am
asking you'all if you know of a way to do this with
QGIS.  The videos below describe the problem in more
detail.

A brief description of what I want to do is to reduce complex
polygons (outlined by their nodes) to numerous simple
polygons (outlined by their nodes) that do not include
the "holes" in the complex polygon.

http://www.mflan.com/temp/poly1.wmv
http://www.mflan.com/temp/poly2.wmv

The videos are very similar.  If you watch one
you don't need to watch the other.

Hi,

I would recommend not using Excel to modify CSV files.  That
program has a reputation for changing numbers to dates and
performing other modifications to the file contents that may
not be wanted.

Personally I use the Text::CSV module in Perl, but there are
many other methods to modify a CSV file without the changes that
Excel imposes on you.

specific value for an attribute, and copied that selection (about 30.000
objects) via the clipboard (ctrl-c) to a new Microsoft Excel file, then
saved the excel file and repeated the process for another selection. This
worked perfect for some time. However, some selections won't copy: when I
press the copy button the programs turn to 'not responding' and won't snap
out of it anymore. Selection size when this happens is about the same
(about 20k to 35k objects).

As Etienne said, you can use geojson if you want to.
I recommend it.

Create geojson files that look like this:

{
"type": "FeatureCollection",
"crs": { "type": "name", "properties": { "name":
"urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84" } },

"features": [

{ "type": "Feature", "properties": { "id": 1, "name": "Route 46" },
"geometry": { "type": "LineString", "coordinates": [ [ -90.1322030,
38.9030880 ],  [ -90.1321070, 38.9031320 ],  [ -90.1321180, 38.9032740
],  [ -90.1322400, 38.9033200 ],  [ -90.1327310, 38.9033390 ],  [
-90.1327700, 38.9033720 ],  [ -90.1328080, 38.9034150 ],  [ -90.1328500,
38.9034620 ],  [ -90.1328940, 38.9035110 ],  [ -90.1329390, 38.9035600
],  [ -90.1329630, 38.9036120 ],  [ -90.1329790, 38.9036700 ],  [
-90.1329930, 38.9037210 ],  [ -94.8775660, 36.8685670 ] ] } }

You can combine them into one file with a comma between them.

Load that file into QGIS and you have tracks that look like this:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/routes_-_svg.svg

It has the added bonus that if you change the file
while QGIS has it open, the next screen refresh will
usually show the change.

Very cool.

Now I am wondering if I am posting to the correct list.
I guess it's not the list I intended to post to.

Anyway, when I filled this form out
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip1.jpg
and clicked on "Run as Batch Process", it produces a
blank box:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip2.jpg

I didn't know what to do with that, so I did the same:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip3.jpg
but clicked on Run in Background, and it gave an error:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip4.jpg

But it did create a USAroads shape file.  When I loaded it
it appeared to be blank, even though it is 10.9 MB:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip5.jpg

So I tried to find Feature (26).
I believe it is this one:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/clip6.jpg

If anybody has the patience for all of this, the
layer files are here:

http://www.mflan.com/temp/roads-north_america.zip
http://www.mflan.com/temp/statep010.zip

BTW, judging by other shape files I have found in my
records, I think I have successfully clipped roads in
the past.  I just don't remember how to do it now.

Perhaps I need to create only one, single polygon for
the lower 48 states as a first step??  I will work on

The ground map and collected data are processed on a special dedicated software

In Ocad I can import georeferenced ESRI shape files .shp

I was doing this with Qgis2 and the scale was OK by exporting (saving as) the
symbology to a determined scale 1:10 000 with a perfect result.

Since Qgis3 this option disappeared and the result gives me a bad scale even if
my scale in Ocad is set to 1:10 000.

I’m searching for months now and can’t find anything to solve this.

Does anyone have a clue how to manage this in Qgis3 ?

Last thing maybe important, I’m running Qgis on a Mac.

I noticed a pretty good boost in performance, so I

Probably the greatest difference noticed was when

That is an amazing plugin.?? Thank you.
It is going to help me out a whole bunch.

I like that you have lat, long, and not long, lat in
the DD format.?? Outside of the plugin, in the status
bar at the bottom of my Windows QGIS, and across from
"Coordinate:", QGIS lists long, lat in the DD format.
I've been trying to change that to lat, long but have
been unable to do that so far.?? Anybody know how to
do that?

The coordinate conversion box is incredible too.
Very nice design.?? The only thing I would like to
do that I cannot figure out is to change the DMS
format from
44??22'20" N,86??1'11" W
to
442220N086111W
But I can easily do that with scripts outside of QGIS,
so it is no big deal to me.

Now I am going to look at your Search Layers plugin.
I think I have a need for that too.

Thanks for all you do.

Hi folks,
I'm sure there must be some "easy" solution, but hours of searching

I have a point layer of bird observations and a GPS-track recorded while
observing the birds in an area.
For the interpretation of the findings it would be good to easily find
out, from which position the recorded observation was taken.

My idea was to compare the timestamp of the bird point with the
timestamps of the track points, but I run into huge obstacles right at
start:
I know that I "could" query across layers by the expression aggregate().
Unfortunately, the docs on that is so sparse, that I have not the
slightest idea how to even start with that
(https://docs.qgis.org/testing/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_vector/expression.html?highlight=expression#aggregates-functions)

Ok, in case I could find out how to properly use aggregate, how do I
best compare those time stamps?
The layers derive from gpx-files and QGIS identifies the time tag as
QDateTime.

As it is not very likely that a bird observation was recorded at the
exact same time as a track point was generated, there is no way to
actually compare the values, cause the bird time value will always lie
in between two track point values.
What kind of query can be used to identify those two trackpoints ?

In short: How can I identify/highligt/mark track points that have a
timestamp close the selected point in another layer?

I already created a question on this on gis stackexchange with a
screenshot,but no reactions so far.

[Qgis-user] GeoTiff Viewer

I want a simple viewer that can open multiple
Geo Tiff files (just 1 to 4 7.5' topos), copy
cursor coordinates to the clipboard, zoom to
coordinates passed to the program, and perhaps
measure linear distance.  Something simple and
fast.  For more complicated things I usually

I'm going to try OpenEV real soon.  The last

Hi all,

I have a series of GPS coordinate points and i would like to connect these
points using a line creating a movement pattern. These points will connect
using time and date for sequencing.

Can someone help me figure how to present this data on Qgis.

This is probably not what you have in mind, but
I was really surprised over the last few days when
the latest QGIS would not install on my Ubuntu OS.
I am new to Linux.  FileZilla installed without
issues, but multiple Qgis versions:

Release for Ubuntu
Release with ubuntugis-unstable dependencies
LTR

All had problems with dependencies.

I guess this will contribute to keeping me on
Windows for a little while longer :-(

I noticed the install website:
https://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#debian-ubuntu
changed during my attempts to install QGIS, but
the changes did not make it work.  I will keep
trying over time.

I abandoned Ubuntu and went with Mint.
It installed immediately with just
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get install qgis python-qgis qgis-plugin-grass

So kudos to the 64 bit Tina Cinnamon Mint crew.
A little dingy to the Ubunto crew.

Hi Mike,

Have you tried using the qgis.org repo rather than the Ubuntu-gis unstable

fine for the last year, yet to experience any issues (except the key expiring,
which was a simple fix).

You can also get QGIS as a flatpak
(https://flathub.org/apps/details/org.qgis.qgis), requires a few terminal
commands to add flatpak support (https://flatpak.org/setup/Ubuntu/). I'm not

I have your exact same problem, except I tried to
install QGIS 3.10 after uninstalling my QGIS 2.18.
I am on Linux Mint 19.2.

When I go to the directory: /usr/share/gdal
I have a folder "2.2"

My sources.list file located here:
/etc/apt/sources.list
has this inside it:

#deb cdrom:[Linux Mint 19.2 _Tina_ - Release amd64 20190729]/ bionic
contrib main non-free

deb https://qgis.org/ubuntu/ unstable main
deb-src https://qgis.org/ubuntu/ unstable main

The output of the 2 install commands is shown below.

The problem is that I try to install QGIS 3.10 and I
wind up with QGIS 2.18.

If I get this problem fixed I'll let you know what
I did.  I'm not real motivated to fix it right now
since QGIS 2.18 meets most of my needs.

Thank you.

About a week or so ago I did a manual update called for
on my Linux Mint panel.  It put both QGIS 3.10.0 and
QGIS 3.8.3 in Software Manager.  I first tried QGIS 3.10.0
and it failed on dependencies.  So I tried QGIS 3.8.3
and it installed great after I uninstalled my 2.18 version.
So I have been using QGIS 3.10.0 for about a week now.

Thank you.

I'm thinking you can make polygons shapes with

clockwise nested polygons.

By the way, can we make polygons shapes with holes or islands??? If so, you can
probably use the transparency to simulate what you need.

No, there's no way to achieve this properly using current
functionality. To do it properly we need to ensure that the map
rendering respects the actual shape of the layout map, and doesn't try
to place labels or other symbology effects outside of the actual
visible area.

I could easily be wrong, but I say I (and you) cannot
clip a raster layer.  In the clip box the selections
for "Input layer" do not include raster layers.

Message-ID:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"

I have QGIS 3.10.1 installed and I can no longer display historic USGS
geofiffs. I probably have not used these since at least version 3.8. I got
a message saying that the transform could not be done. The file had a CRS
that was apparently user generated (automatically) based on NAD27. I have
over 50 of these files and each seems to have a different User CRS. The
project CRS is EPSG:3857.

The transform failure message provided a link to download the grid shift
file ntv2_0.gsb. I clicked the link which downloaded a zip file. I
extracted only ntv2_0.gsb from it and browsed to it using the "Install
ntv2_0.gsb from Folder..." button. It installed with a message indicating
success. I closed and reopened the project as directed, and selected the
geotiff file layer. There was no error but the canvas was obviously far
from the rest of my project (SE US). I zoomed to the geotiff layer and
selected the Google satellite view. I zoomed out until I recognized the
area as being northern Africa. Approximate center coordinates
were: 32.78461469, -0.00187768.

The projection file GA_Hightower Bald_245924_1988_24000_geo.tif.prj
contains this:

PROJCS["Transverse_Mercator",GEOGCS["GCS_North_American_1927",DATUM["D_North_American_1927",SPHEROID["Clarke_1866",6378206.4,294.9786982]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0],UNIT["Degree",0.017453292519943295]],PROJECTION["Transverse_Mercator"],PARAMETER["latitude_of_origin",0],PARAMETER["central_meridian",-83.562918],PARAMETER["scale_factor",1],PARAMETER["false_easting",0],PARAMETER["false_northing",0],UNIT["Meter",1]]

Previously, I had not even downloaded the .prj files because QGIS seemed to
handle the geotiff files with no problem. I tried downloading the tfw and
prj files but it made no difference. I also tried to set the CRS for the
geotiff based on the prj file and that gave the same result.

I think that after installing the grid shift file, there is no error
detected but the transformation fails.

Has anyone had any experience with USGS geotiff files and QGIS 3.10.1?

A download link for the files above is:
ftp://rockyftp.cr.usgs.gov/vdelivery/Datasets/Staged/Maps/HistoricalTopo/GeoTIFF/GA/

Any help to solve this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I can't reproduce that on Linux Mint 19.2 and QGIS 3.10.1.
Everything works fine when I include a shape file and a

I reopen the project and it opens fine every time.

Hello,

I'm just getting (re)started with QGIS (version 3.10.2, on Ubuntu 18.04). I
have some big raster files that I will be using for several projects. I have a
second 2TB hard drive on my computer where I store them. I put symbolic links
to them in the folder for a QGIS project. This worked fine - I was able to add
them to the project, complete some analyses (merge, ruggedness, align etc), and
save the resulting rasters.

However, when I re-opened the project, all the symbolic linked rasters appeared
as unavailable layers. It looks like the paths to the symbolic links were
replaced by relative paths to the linked files themselves (e.g.,
../../../enm/worldclim/na/wcna_01.tif). This path is not correct, the actual
file is at /media/data/enm/worldclim/na/wcna_01.tif, and the symbolic link is
at ./data/wcna_01.tif, relative to the QGIS .qgz project file.

I thought that the problem was using symbolic links, so I added one of the
rasters using the full path to the file on the second hard drive. When I saved
the project, closed and re-opened it, this layer was also listed as
unavailable, with the same path listed for the corresponding symbolic linked
file.

Then I discovered that projects can be set to use absolute or relative paths.
This project had been set to relative (the default). So I changed it to
absolute, and corrected the datasource for one of my unavailable layers. That
worked for the session, but after saving and reloading, the path had been
stored as /home/tws/enm/worldclim/na/wcna_01.tif, which is an absolute path,
but not the correct one (see above).

The rasters and shapefiles that I created as part of this project, saved in the
same directory as the .qgz file, work fine, and are available between QGIS
sessions.

Is it not possible to have files on different physical hard drives in the same
project? Have I done something wrong here?

Best,

Tyler

Hi Mike,

The use of these services is most of the times license-wise-seen a
little dodgy anyway. Better use OpenStreetMap or other reference data.
If you really like/need Google or Bing (which you according to their
licences probably are not allowed to use their tiles out of their own
api's...) you can use the alternatives Alexander notes.
In QuickMapservcies, load the non-free services via menu
Web/QuickmapServices/Settings tab 'More Services'.

Some url's to use for xyz layers, if you want dodgy:

ArcGis:
http://server.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/World_Topo_Map/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}.png

Google Map:   https://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs=m={x}={y}={z}

Google Satellite:   https://mt1.google.com/vt/lyrs=s={x}={y}={z}

OSM is there for free :-)

Re: [Qgis-user] Dumb USGS geotiff questions

2020-04-19 Thread Mike Flannigan

It may sound like I know what I am talking about,
but you may not want to make that assumption.

Everything is working fine for you.  Older USGS
topo maps (~1980 and earlier) are in NAD27 datum.
Newer maps (~1990 and newer) might be in WGS84,
but I'm not sure about that.

I'm thinking if you change your datum to NAD27
that deviation may go away.

I believe the older files can be changed to WGS84
with GDAL if needed, but I generally just leave them
in NAD27.  In MO, where I normally work, the difference
between NAD27 and WGS84 is pretty small - roughly the
amount shown on your maps.  I would expect it to be
higher where you are working - near Oakland, CA:

I am running 3.12.1-București on a mac, os-x 10.14.6. My knowledge of GIS
is rudimentary, I've learned what I need to, to satisfy my curiosity about
my region, using old maps.

I have downloaded all the USGS maps for my region - Oakland, CA, USA, which
corresponds to "CA Concord" - from USGS topoView, in geotiff format.
Opening them in QGIS gives fairly wild offsets; they are not all encoded
the same way, yet have common corners. Features on the map vary with what
modern maps show, but getting their corners right would help me a lot.

If I create a new project, set my CRS to WGS 84 / Pseudo-Mercator
(EPSG:3857) as I think is correct for my base map, Google Maps (EPSG:3857 -
WGS 84 / Pseudo-Mercator - Projected) then Layer > Add Layer > Add Raster
Layer > Raster Dataset > CA_Concord_465520_1943_62500_geo.tif > Add, I get
prompted with:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FKVPrHLtXXKK8a-QTTz3IigT9dpj1Hou/view?usp=sharing

I don't know what to choose, here. I chose the first one. I've tried
others. The tif.prj file does say
DATUM["D_North_American_1927",SPHEROID["Clarke_1866",6378206.4,294.9786982]],
which I am guessing conforms to NAD27. If I add an opacity slider to the
new raster layer, set its opacity, and then use the Zoom to Coordinate
panel to navigate to 37º45'N 122º15'W, I find that the point is off from
what's on the map, see:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/10vYtcM1FZ-vdS3z1FPW2EYbrNy2sj65L/view?usp=sharing

This is similarly true at the top left:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/18naBKuwk6rZ9DP0tFOZxnGKlIpRQgDKM/view?usp=sharing

Also, note how the map shows two lines at top left, it's true at top right.
This is something to do with projection, I think. I've tried to
georeference these lines, to get them to line up right, but which
intersection do I use, when there are two vertical lines intersecting with
the top, horizontal border, to reference 122º 15' 38º 00' ? I've had mixed
results, trying to use deg-min-ss coordinates to georeference these; I get
a map off the west coast of Africa. Using points on the map is more
successful.

All the maps have slightly variant values in their tfw files. Their prj
files are more uniform, but also show variations. I'd like to normalize
them all, so that I can view the USGS topo maps for my region over time.
Advice?

Thanks,

Morgan

Much to my surprise I think you are correct.
QGIS can open a TIF file (and a zipped TIF file),
but I can't get a GeoPDF to open in QGIS.  If I
convert the GeoPDF to a TIF with GDAL, it still
will not open and gives error "Missing Codec".

Very surprising.  I know from past experience that
Global Mapper v6.04 will view TIF files that have
been converted from GeoPDF via GDAL.

Re: [Qgis-user] Road Labels

2020-10-22 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thanks for this procedure Thayer.
I use Overpass Turbo to plot tracks along roads.  It is somewhat
of a complicated process, but it works.  Perhaps I should be
using QGIS to do this instead.

But since I currently reply on the Overpass Turbo website, I am
looking for an alternate website that does the same thing.  I want
to prepare for the day when Overpass Turbo disappears (or moves).

So this email is a 2 part question.

1) Are there any other websites that do what the Overpass Turbo website
does?

2) Do you have any suggestions on a better way to get a track plot along
roads, when you feed the program just a few vertexes along the road route?

My convoluted procedure to get tracks along roads is shown below.

Mike

THE New Procedure for Tracks is:

Create a text file with DD lat/longs that looks like this:
38.891953, -94.714428
39.961945, -95.788242
42.263043, -96.481528
42.874940, -97.140297
43.095141, -98.332987

This is generally created from taking each point from Google Maps.

Then run googmaptrack.pl to create a google maps URL like this:
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/38.891953,-94.714428/39.961945,-95.788242/42.263043,-96.481528/42.874940,-97.140297/43.095141,-98.332987

Paste that URL into a browser and make sure it is the correct route.
If not, add more intermediary points to correct the route.

Then run trackosrm.pl to create a bunch of terminal commands that
curl an OSRM URL like this:
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-104.062500,46.498392;-94.714428,38.891953?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout01.txt

Paste the whole string of terminal commands into a terminal to create
all the procoutXX.txt files.

Then use trackosrm2.pl to process those procoutXX.txt files
to extract all of the node numbers to nodes.txt.  It will
create an output that looks like this:

[out:json];
(
  node(77927832);
  node(77927830);
  node(77927828);
  node(77927826);
);
(._;>;);
out;

YOU NEED TO ADD THOSE FIRST 2 LINES AND LAST 3 LINES.

Then paste all those nodes and to this website:
http://overpass-turbo.eu/

Hit the Run button at the upper left.

Then hit the "Data" tab at the upper right and copy and paste the data
supplied

into a file like latlong.txt.

Use garminfile.pl to extract the lat/longs to TopoUSA format.

Unfortunately, curl does not keep the items in order.  So we need
to change the trackosrm.pl 'out' file above that looks like this:
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.799440,37.663330;-118.592720,37.671850?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout01.txt
curl
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.592720,37.671850;-116.855740,38.125510?alternatives=false=nodes'
>/home/mike/Documents/copy5/procout02.txt

and change it to this:

firefox
'http://router.project-osrm.org/route/v1/driving/-118.799440,37.663330;-118.592720,37.671850?alternatives=false=nodes'
firefox

by using this:

"track2_out.txt" -exec grep -il -Z "driving" {} \; | xargs -0 perl
-i.bak -pnwe 's/curl\s(.*) >.*/firefox $1/g'

Then copy each firefox command into the terminal and copy the web page
output

into an 'order.txt' file, remove the beginning and ending lines, so we only
have the node lines.  Then do a search and replace - search for
"^\d+\s+" and

replace with nothing.

So order.txt has nothing but node numbers (in order) in it.

Then use trackorder.pl to reorder all the procout.txt files created above.

Then use trackreduce.pl to reduce the number of points with the Douglas
- Peucker algorithm.

Then use geojson.pl to create a geojson file to use in QGIS to see what
the track looks like.

One way to do this is with Overpass Turbo (https://overpass-turbo.eu) to select

Overpass Turbo
0) Close applications that you do not need, and open a web browser.1) Go to the Overpass Turbo website and use the search and zoom controls
to adjust the map to your area of interest. 2) Then copy and paste the sample query into the text area to the left side of the map window.
3) Then click on the "Run" button at the top left.4) After it runs for a while it will probably say "Large Amounts of

I'm not a whole lot of help, but here is what I can
tell you.

A qgis2web export worked for me on
Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon
QGIS 3.10.10
GDAL  version may be 2.2
Python 2.7.17
8 GB RAM

I turned off QuickMapServices.  If you need that on, let me know.
It created a 43MB directory.

The delay was about 10-15 seconds, so you might want to let
yours run for more than 3 minutes.

I could upload this thing if you need to see it.

The steps I have taken are following this tutorial:

[Qgis-user] Multiple Layers

2020-06-15 Thread Mike Flannigan

Linux Mint QGIS 3.12.3-Bucuresti.

I have a qgs file with about 470 layers.
Roughly 100 of those layers are grouped together in
7 groups.  All layers are SHP or geojson.  Most
are geojson.  I cannot have all the layers on, but
I can have most of them turned on.  It takes a
couple minutes to load all the layers upon startup.
It counts down slowly from about 30 layers remaining,
to 1 layers remaining over ~3 minutes.

If I have all the layers turned on it either bombs
and closes while I am turning on layers, or a partial
artifact window appears over the Layers panel and
it freezes.

I thought it was because my geojson files had very few
newlines, and looked like this:

"type": "FeatureCollection",
"crs": { "type": "name", "properties": { "name":
"urn:ogc:def:crs:OGC:1.3:CRS84" } },

"features": [

{ "type": "Feature", "properties": { "id": 133, "name": "Some Trail" },
"geometry": { "type": "LineString", "coordinates": [ [ -71.701964,
44.138121 ],  [ -71.702024, 44.138155 ],  [ -71.702079, 44.138192 ],  [
-71.702147, 44.138216 ],  [ -71.702209, 44.138248 ],  [ -71.702266,
44.138285 ],  [ -71.702327, 44.138316 ],  [ -71.702391, 44.138346 ],  [
-71.702463, 44.138354 ],  [ -71.702547, 44.138356 ],  [ -71.702611,
44.138397 ],  [ -71.702644, 44.138447 ],  [ -71.702695, 44.138441 ],  [
-71.702749, 44.138447 ],  [ -71.702813, 44.138450 ],  [ -71.704207,
44.137891 ],  [ -71.704354, 44.137890 ],  [ -71.704502, 44.137856 ] . . .

But when I added newlines after every lat/long pair it did
not fix the problem.

I welcome any recommendations.  Including migrating to
a geo DB format.  I imagine if I combined my geojson's
into just a few files it would fix the problem, since
I have another qgs file that combines 290 geojson files
into a single geojson layer and it always works fine.

Thanks for the response.  I think when I double
the ulimit to 2048 I am not really doing anything
positive for QGIS.  I think it is just increasing
the ulimit for the terminal window, since each
terminal window appears to have its own ulimit.

Doubling the ulimit to 2048 also doesn't appear to
fix the problem.

I notice that when I turn on layers the CPU goes to
100% and stays there for a minute or more (in htop).
If I let it settle back down to near 0%, then QGIS
keeps working.  If I keep clicking layers QGIS
freezes.

[Qgis-user] QGIS 3.16 Installation on Linux Mint

2020-12-01 Thread Mike Flannigan

Linux Mint (LM) is a fork of Ubuntu, so LM users
normally use the Ubuntu install commands located here:
https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#debian-ubuntu

The command on that website that has given me problems is
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian `lsb_release -c -s`
main"

People who know more than me say that `lsb_release -c -s` returns
"tricia", which is unknown to the QGIS repo.  Only the Linux Mint repo
knows the LM 19.3 nickname tricia. The rest of the world needs to be
given the Ubuntu nickname bionic instead, because LM 19.3 tricia is
based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.  So they tell me to change that command to
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main".
That worked for me.

"So what" you may say.  We say it is for Debian and Ubuntu, not LM.
That is true, but there are apparently more Mint users than either
Ubuntu or Debian users:
https://distrowatch.com/

I just wonder if that line should be changed to
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main"

If not, then maybe there is another way to correct this problem for
LM users.

Thanks.  I am using the Flatpak ver 3.10.12 out of the LM

it works great.  The problem is, my Update Manager keeps
upgrading QGIS (most recently to 3.16), but I cannot find
it or run it.  You can read the details here:

Synaptic package manager says I have 3.16 installed:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/synaptic.jpg
but I have looked hard and can't find it.
'sudo apt-get purge QGIS' does not get rid of 3.16.
Software Manager says I have 3.10 Flatpak installed, but
not the regular 3.16.1+28bionic that is also listed in
the Software Manager.  If I try to install 3.16.1+28bionic
it fails immediately on package dependency problems.

So my system keeps updating, but I am left with only 3.10 to run.

Perhaps Flatpak 3.16 will come along eventually.  Or maybe
I will uninstall 3.16 from Synaptic package manager and then
try to reinstall 3.16 from Software Manager or from the
QGIS website.

If I did the Flatpak on this site

Those instructions are what brought up this issue.
Apparently
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian `lsb_release -c -s`
main"

is good for Ubuntu, but not Linux Mint.  For LM use this instead:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb https://qgis.org/debian bionic main"

Right now I am using QGIS quite a bit and I can't do with out.
When I get a break I will try to get the QGGIS version 3.16
on the LM Software Manager to install.  If that doesn't work I
will follow the QuickStart procedure modified to bionic.

I have used those QuickStart procedures successfully in the past.

Thanks so much for your help.

I guess this is the best I found on the internet:

Except you would use "Bionic Beaver" if you referenced that.

The Linux Mint history:

is also not exactly right.
We Linux people know that Tricia ne tricia.
Lots of holes to fall into when doing this stuff.

Re: [Qgis-user] Toggle Attribute

2020-11-23 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thank you.  I did get an Action to operate today.  My action also
uses a Google Maps link.

I can click on "Identify Features", which opens a "Identify Results"
panel.  Then I can click on a feature in that layer, open Actions
in the "Identify Results" panel, and click on the action, which
runs the action.

Now I'm trying to make the action more accessible.  Am I correct
in my assumption that the button just to the right of "Identify Features"
should list my Action in the dropdown list?  So list stuff like this:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/action1.jpg
Figure 5 was taken from:
https://www.geodose.com/2018/04/qgis-tutorial-how-to-create-action.html

When I click on that little black triangle on the button just to the right
of "Identify Features" it shows an empty, white box.  When I click on the
button is doesn't do anything.  When I hover over the button it says
"no action selected".

Ideally I would like for the action to run if I just click on the feature.

Hi Mike,

Just create an action with something like this to see it in action:

https://www.google.pt/maps/@[% @click_x %],[% @click_y %]

This will open google maps at the place you clicked. If you want to get
something from the action called, you have to capture its output (and
return the right value from your script).

As Richard said, start with the default actions and you will see
different kinds of things that can be done with actions. Capturing the
clicked X,Y is straight forward.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS 3.16 Installation on Linux Mint

2020-12-02 Thread Mike Flannigan

Thanks Chris, I really appreciate the response.
Sure sounds like an area that could use some improvement.
I suspect there is a good reason why Linux Mint (LM) 19.3
cannot be called bionic instead of tricia.  So first question
is how do I cross reference names and numbers (i.e. Ubuntu
bionic = 18.04).  I did some looking.  Is LXR needed for that?
I also went into 'Release' and 'InRelease' on that website, but
could not cross reference bionic to 18.04.

Second question is how do I cross reference between Ubuntu and LM?
i.e. LM 19.3 tricia is based on Ubuntu 18.04 bionic.

I'm still looking.  I will report this if I find it.

precise... wow that's 12.04 which has been unsupported since 2017.
Well anyway.

Not to mention the Debian users which have the selection of buster,
jessie, stretch, trusty and unstable.

Not to mention the Mint users using Ulyana which is AFAIK based on
Ubuntu 20.04 (focal)?

So probably hardcoding it to refer only to the Ubuntu 18.04 / bionic
distro and thereby also satisfying the Mint folks on tricia would
cause a lot of surprise to quite a lot of users.

Also please remember that there are lots of other Ubuntu (and Debian)
derivative distros that can likely use the appropriate Ubuntu distro.

You can always go into the plugin settings and specify which order you want
and that order will be preserved everytime you launch QGIS. The default
order is only applicable the first time you install "Lat Lon Tools" or if
you do a reset to defaults in the Lat Lon Tools settings menu,

Who prefers Lat Lon Tools to default to "longitude, latitude" or "X, Y"

Who prefers Lat Lon Tools to default to "latitude, longitude (Google map

I'm just checking to see if I should make this change or not.

[Qgis-user] QGIS Update Does Not Work

2020-10-20 Thread Mike Flannigan

Duplicate post - this one with correct links:

I am on Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon.
When I try to update QGIS with the Update Manager from
ver 3.10.10 to 3.14
http://www.mflan.com/temp/update1.jpg

It first gave this error:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/qgis_error1.jpg

But now it gives this error every time:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/qgis_error2.jpg

I changed the local repository and still get the
same error.

My ver 3.10.10 works fine, so this is not a big
deal to me.  I just thought I would mention it
hear in case it is a problem for others besides me.

I successfully updated my main machine to ver 3.14
more than a month ago, so perhaps this is just a
recent error that has developed.

Thank you Thayer and Richard.

The Openrouteservice.org GUI map did not work for

Graphhopper is nearly perfect for what I want, and
I really appreciate you bringing it to my attention.
It's going to save me quite a bit of time.
This is the link I am using:
https://graphhopper.com/maps/

The GPX export of the track is exactly what I need.
The GUI is great.  I rarely have more than a dozen
intermediary points along the track, so I'll probably
just create the URL I need to get the output I need.
Or maybe I will dive into the API, but I hate these
API keys that always seem to be turned off, and I'm
supposed to beg for another one.

QuickOSM appears to have a lot of promise too.
It's on my list to investigate.

Thanks again.

That said, my initial thought is that instead of using Google you might want to
do your routing on websites or API's that are based directly on OSM data, for
example Graphhopper or Openrouteservice.org that will allow you to export
routes as GPX. You can then use Douglas Peuker to simplify. If you are looking

2020-11-04 Thread Mike Flannigan

See my write-up below on the SIP module loading problem.
I am no longer OK.  Apparently the TimeShift back
only temporarily fixes the problem.  So every plugin
available to me is this short list:
http://www.mflan.com/temp/plugins.jpg

All I can figure is most QGIS users don't use plugins
(not likely) or this problem is affecting less than
10% of QGIS users.  Otherwise I suspect this would be the
biggest issue discussed on the list.  I don't even know
what to work on - QGIS or Python.

I am on QGIS version 3.14.16-Pi.  I guess I will go forward -
to ver 3.16.0 at first, then backwards if necessary.  I would
welcome a 3.16.0 user who does not have this problem to
state that on this list.  I welcome any suggestions.

I am on Linux Mint 19.3.

layers you want to choose). But you can use the "shift" and "ctrl"
techniques I mentioned before and click the "toggle selection" to simplify
checking multiple layers in those interfaces.

I often use the "select all" option and use the CTRL+click to deselect
unwanted layers. That makes it quicker when selecting the majority of large
layer collections.

You can select multiple layers by selecting the first layer and holding
SHIFT, then all the other layers between those two selected should also be
selected.

You can hold the CTRL button and click a layer to toggle it's selected
status to add or remove it from the selection.

You can then add them to a group or drag their order on the ToC, but to
toggle all layer visibility you will need to use the hide/ show selected
features option from the layer visibility drop down in the layer panel.

Thank you.  The Manage Map Themes is exactly what I was
looking for.  That is going to save me quite a bit of time.

In the table of contents, the manage map themes icon has a drop down menu
with various options for layer visibility management [1].

In the processing tools interface, a toggle selection button is available
which changes the selected layers "checked" status [2].
