Brilliant job :)

Neil

 Hi all,

Wow, it's been a crazy couple of weeks. I am so grateful to QUANTA for
the advert, and to so many of you for ordering or pre-ordering - your
faith and confidence will be rewarded. :)

Firstly, I have had to make a new batch of microdrive felt pads. I
sold most of the first batch, and sent a lot more on to Rich at RWAP
for those who would prefer to buy from a more established seller. I
also sent him some QL on a Stick, new editions! I'm sure he'll have
those listed soon after he gets them.

I have changed how I package the felt pads, and it will soon allow me
to reduce the cost even further. I now attach them to a piece of tape,
then mount them on the instruction sheet. I tri-fold the sheet, and it
protects the pads well enough - even if they get completely crushed,
they fully recover in about 20 minutes. You should see the lower
pricing once the current batch finishes selling. Oooer, I hope that
doesn't kill my sales while you wait for the new batch!

The battery adapters have finally been released from customs and
should be here tomorrow! I am so excited to see them coming and hope
to get the first orders shipped out this week.

I have almost finished the Minerva MK IIs, and am just waiting for two
 components to arrive.

UltimIDE is currently a box of components. I have almost finished the
prototype wiring and have started the PCB design in earned. Currently,
it supports two traditional IDE devices (more with an expander) plus
two CF cards and a 1.8 or 2.5 SSD on-board. It's almost entirely
SMD. It will have an option for 512K of on-board RAM, which will be
selectable, in case you want an unexpanded QL for compatibility or (S)GC
 reasons.

UltraQ is taking shape quite nicely. It currently is specced for
floppy, parallel, QIMI mouse, IDE, plus its own CPU and 4MB of RAM. We
are hoping it will run most QLs at 15 MHz.It will not be quite as fast
as a Gold Card, but it will have twice the memory. It will also use
some GC-style tricks like shadowing video RAM. It will come with a
custom version of Minerva and, hopefully, SMSQ/E on CF card.

Lets talk about ethernet for a moment. We would like to include ethernet:
the hardware is easy. Fitting it on the card is a bit more difficult,
but once we concede it'll be a double-deck interface, a lot of room opens up.
Maybe if we include the hardware the driver will come. This presents
us with a quandry. Including ethernet adds approximately £20 cost to
the interface - we have discussed if it should be on every card, or an
optional extra. If it is on every card, adoption will be wider and
people will find uses for it. However, if it's not on every card, some
cards will be cheaper, but the cards that do have it will cost a
little more. If you, humble reader, could have a sensible discussion
of the merits of both options, we'll read closely and take your thoughts into
 consideration.

Which leads to... USB. We have found a way to reasonably implement USB
*hardware* but again, there are no drivers. USB takes up less space
than ethernet, but it is complimentary. I personally am deeply
interested in USB for a number of reasons; especially of the build it and
 they will come
variety. Secondly, the hardware has the potential to solve a difficult
problem for us, whilst also giving us more options with hardware. Let
 me
 explain:

We talked with Tony Firshman and Lau Reeves about open-licensing
superHermes, and they have agreed in principle to do so. However,
superHermes is a complex piece of kit: it isn't cheap to incorporate
both in terms of component cost, and production cycle. What it brings
us is both relatively great and relatively little... It allows us to
replace the inbuilt keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard and it gives us
better working serial. However, by modern standards, it still only
gets us to where we should have been initially anyway. It corrected a
fault and an in-hindsight omission. As an alternative, if we could get
to where there is an HID driver for USB and a USB component on the QL,
 most HID (Human Interface
Devices) - mice and keyboards plus all sorts of exotic input devices -
could be made to work using default profiles. Imagine being able to
use modern keyboards, cordless laser mice, etc. It fits well with the
picoATX cased QL concept I am trying to achieve. It also means the
hardware is open for people to write the other two main classes of generic
 USB driver:
storage devices and the other one (I forget. It's late!)

The point is, if we can get a basic HID USB driver functional in the
next few months, it can go out on the QL2, and it might even make it
interesting for the UltraQ. With the ROM image in flash, the
capabilities could be extended by a community effort to cooperate and
develop the drivers in a way that will

The main reason I spend more time on the QL Forum is because it allows members
to share photos, code, and large files in a way that this list doesn't - yet...
I've not been able to attach anything but the smallest photos to the list and
even then, most times the attachments get stripped off. I'm not nocking the
list - just some of the policies come from a time of dial-up and maybe a 500K
or 1MB attachment limit might be more in line with members' slower internet
speeds.

Also, the chat on QL Forum is *great* - it has provided a real sense of
community, and it's fun to see the personalities and senses of humour of the
various people I've known for many years through the formality of email.

Since the Forum has about 210 members now, this new live chat has
great potential for QL users worldwide to stay in touch.

Anyone wanting to join QL Forum, just go to www.qlforum.co.uk . You
can read most of what's on there immediately as a Guest, and once you
have registered (which is free of charge - no fees at all) you can
contribute to the Forum, ask for help if needed, and just generally
stay in touch with other ql-users worldwide. Over the last few months,
it's been a lot busier than even this list.

As an aside, it'd be interesting to hear from people on this list who
are not members of the QL Forum and if there is any particular reason
why you haven't joined so far - maybe you just don't want to, maybe
you are happy just being on ql-users list, maybe you just don't have the time!

/lights blue touch paper

Just enough money in Quanta to go out with a big bang and not a slightly
pathetic phut!

How about, invite all the Quanta members to a last hurrah, a weekend of
celebrating the QL reaching 30, an achievement in itself seeing as it died a
death twenty seven years ago at retail. Enjoy your show, celebrate the QL's
30th because as I see it, fast forward a few short years and the pot will
naturally be almost empty and that'll be that, lights out.

So, £3000 should cover the basics for the party.

What's left in the pot, throw it at that last QL 'pacemaker', one which draws
in interest from outside, a QL on a board, retrofitted into a QL case, able to
run at QL speed, GC speed, SGC speed up to super speeds, use Kickstarter or
whatever to raise cash. Just do it, what have you got to loose, well, apart
from a slow lingering death for the QL that is.

Anyhow, clearly you shouldn't make me treasurer !!

I wonder if it's possible to install the Pi within a usb Keyboard, neatly done

I suppose a slightly less slimline keyboard would be required.

Still, this is so reminiscant of the old Delivered within 28 days
promise I fondly remember waiting months for my QL

Cheers,
Ade.

Except this machine actually exists, and is 99.99% ready whereas the QL was a
pile of components, wire, small motors, some VHS tape and scissors, some blank
A3 pieces of paper, some very sharp pencils (new and unused) and a ruler.

Just saying, that's all !

Re: [Ql-Users] Nascent project: Cross-platform SuperBASIC derivative.

2012-02-23 Thread Neil Riley
I used to Dabble a little using Dark Basic Professional, a rather nice Gui
front end Basic mainly aimed at writing 'games'.
A couple of my friends teenage boys enjoyed messing with it as it was very easy
to code and results came quickly.

This is worth a read for those interested.

Subject: [Ql-Users] Nascent project: Cross-platform SuperBASIC derivative.

The Raspberry Pi project and my work at Oxford University supporting a science
department has had me thinking for some time about the need for a modern
equivalent to the old home computer systems and the BASIC language which came
on them.

On the home computer front, as shown in the second episode of the BBC's
Electric Dreams, teenage boys are still enthused by being able to program, as
long as within 15 minutes they can start annoying their family with sounds and
putting their name on the screen in gaudy colours. Plotting things on the
screen simply is also important. The energy barrier must not be very high.

On the scientific front, there are many people who need to do some programming
but find the energy barrier for learning traditional programming languages (and
even Matlab) too steep. They need a simple language with which to process data
and plot their data in a publishable quality format.

To this end, I see SuperBASIC as a very good starting point, which needs to be
extended with modern data structures such as compound variables and proper
variable scoping.

I've been thinking about this quite hard in the last few days and have written
up my initial thoughts on my blog:

http://www.lingula.org.uk/wordpress/2012/02/23/notsobasic/

Any comments and possible help appreciated. ;-)

[Ql-Users] Raspberry Pi the £20 PC

2011-08-03 Thread Neil Riley
In the latest issue of gamesTM, page 20, there is an article on the
Raspberry Pi which is basically a £20 pc.
This device is the size of a USB memory stick, has a USB port one end
an a HDMI the other. The provisional specs are
decent enough, a 700Mhz ARM11 , 256MB SDRAM, OpenGL ES 2.0, 1080p30
H.264 high profile decoder,
Composite and HDMI video output, USB 2.0, SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot.
It comes with a simple Linux
based Operating system. Developed by David Braben (!) and Dr Eben
Upton of the Raspberry Pi Foundation.

The idea of the device is to plug it into a USB hub

Back to the article and back on topic... It mentions Sir Clive

Electronic Innovation and tinkering is a grand British tradition
that's slowly died out since the days of Sir Clive Sinclair
stalking the cobbled streets of Cambridge in his little three-wheeled
buggy..[snip]

Aimed at Education it is awaiting Government support.

I suspect It's a photo copy although a decent one and it does appear to be on
off white paper. Picture emailed to your rwap email address.

The front cover is official but it does
say
   SUPERFORTH
   +
 REVERSI

A COMPLETE FORTH-83 SYSTEM FOR THE QL

plus the 4Digital Precision logo... By Gerry Jackson. Puplished by Freddy
Vachha

There are 14 sections in the Index where 12 is the reference to Reversi.

It is printed on off white (blue!) paper but It is very subtle.
There is reference to Version 2.0.

Anyhow, It looks like it would photocopy, Id happily send you the newer
copy and I'd keep the Photocopy for myself.

Re: [Ql-Users] Jan Jones Book

2011-03-08 Thread Neil Riley
The QL must be very much alive.
The used Jan Jones book sold for £23 on eBay.
Quanta sold them, new, for £8
JJ got £5 and Quanta paid for the reprint out of their £3.

John Taylor

Probably becoming a 'rare' book now ... would be worth even more if
had
been printed with dust jacket? . :-)

I have both versions and the book, perhaps it's time to sell them

Re: [Ql-Users] Game idea...

2011-02-09 Thread Neil Riley
The lack of games on QL was always a source of much frustration, Whilst the QL
quickly became a
hobbyists dream with Languages and disk drives etc, I just wanted Bandersnatch
or whatever that
mythical IMAGINE secret game was.

One of the first games I played on PC was the traditional Start Trek type game
on a Tandy TRS 80
or was it a Commodore Pet, either way, I always enjoyed that type of game,
especially a DRAGON32
version that was excellent.

I really loved Catacombs on ZX81, it was pig slow but it was one of the first
DD themed games.

My Favorite game though was Adventure on the ATARI VCS2600, utter class and all
running in 4k memory!!

Now, that must be possible on the QL!

My first QL arrived after many months of waiting... as no doubt did everyone.
No dongle as i recall but it dids within a few minutes of switching on, so
was promptly retuned. A replacement arrived a week or two later with AH Roms,
It at least was reliable for the time I owned it.

Seeing as I ordered my QL as soon as those fancy brochures appeared in PC World

a Dongled specimen.

The odd thing is that only the main 4 Psion packages ever made allowance
for the difference in the AT command - presumably no-one else ever
raised this with an issue with software producers, as all the machines

Turbo and Q-liberator would have fun compiling the AT command if it was

However, it appears that you have my QL DEFUSION carts as that case is

[Ql-Users] USB 3G Dongle Broadband Wireless Routers

2010-09-06 Thread Neil Riley
Slightly off topic but Im was so happy with this little device I had to
mention it.

If anyone is after a wireless router for their USB 3G broadband dongle,
as I was, I recommend
LM Technologies LM009. It's an 'N' spec router and tiny at only 10cm
long. Being N rated, the
range from it's internal Antennae is excellent. I'm using it in work as
works broadband is very restricted.

By some miracle, I was able to pick up a brand new one for under £15
including shipping fees from an
Amazon third party seller but it normally retails around the £35 - £45
mark.

As some of you will no doubt know, I am trying to build up a repository
of all Sinclair QL titles - to include details on the QL Wiki and to
also be able to provide working copies of games to people who have the
originals, but sadly can no longer get them to work (or need a version
for an emulator)

However, there is a mass of software titles which I don't have copies of
and the list grows every time I pick up an old Sinclair QL World magazine.

Does anyone have working copies of the following (originals or backups -
disk version preferred, but microdrives will do):

There is a host of Sinclair QL items which are missing in action - does
anyone have any of this missing software, as we would like to preserve it:

Adventure Writer by Rodent Software
ANIMAL - Guess the animal game for Psion Archive
Art Master - a general drawing program from Micr_A_Soft
Crazy Painter by Microdeal
Design Board II - a 3D CAD program from Micr_A_Soft

Re: [Ql-Users] Missing Sinclair QL Software Titles

Sounds like a tough job Rich, I guess finding some of the programs
will be an almost impossible task. Even if they are still in the wild, they're
likely to be hidden away in a loft somewhere, the cold won't do those
microdrives and favours. I store my Microdrives in my lounge

I've got plenty of 'stuff' which no longer loads so I hope you are successful
in your quest ( sounds a bit Hollywood but you get my drift ).

Hi Neil,

Yes I still have your software - I am left with the titles I am
struggling to get off the microdrives! Not just copy protection - but
other issues, such as they load a specific sector after loading and use
that code, or the tape is unreadable!

Would be nice to see Crazy Painter again, I loved the Microdeal games for QL

Dragon 32. Anyone else remember Space War?

 Good luck in your quest.

Art Master - a general drawing program from Micr_A_Soft
 Crazy Painter by Microdeal

We have now launched a new retro auction website -
http://www.sellmyretro.com

The idea is to bring traders, collectors and users together - we have
added a wiki to each category and could do with some more wiki text (or

different languages).

If we have missed any categories, please let us know.

The fees are a lot cheaper than on ebay, and we are working towards two

types of webstore - a free webstore linked to a category, so that
traders can let people know where else that they can try, or a paid for

webstore (£5 per month) with 50% off all fees on the site.

Plenty more ideas in the offing, but we are open to suggestions!

Can I suggest that Quanta and QL Today open a webstore linked to the
Sinclair QL category, to establish a presence for themselves on the
site
- I will ensure that they don't get charged any fees for the time
being!

Adrian,

I think you read the mood of Dave's reply incorrectly. We hear the word
'Implying' only in police drama's where the suspect is being interrogated so
you could be forgiven for getting the wrong end of the stick :-) I too read

Dave,

Firstly, I'm not implying anything. I didn't mean to cause so much
offence by my request. I did not realise that XTC68 was exactly the
same suite as the C68 compiler which you have done a sterling job of
maintaining for many years. I thought, as the binaries I have were
dated 1997, that it was a different compiler that had not been
maintained in that time.

Now that you have set me straight, my request is herewith withdrawn
and I shall never raise the subject on this list again.

I recorded the program! One strange thing, it showed a TV advert, Clive
Sinclair was leaping over other computers
of the time and it briefly showed the QL and a price of £645 or
thereabouts, Screen included perhaps! Haven't actually
watched the program as yet but no doubt it'll take me back to my

Just thinking back reminds me of the huge excitement at the thought of
owning my first computer, at the time, the ZX81 :-)
Of course, I really wanted the fantastic ATARI 800 but that was £700+
so. ( got one now though ;-) )

Ah, Nostalgia !

I'm looking for a very specific game called Knight Flight from Realtime

Re: [Ql-Users] Fw: Hi Resolution Colour Graphics on a Standard QL?

2008-06-23 Thread Neil Riley

The biggest shame with the QL world, is that although we are good at
devising new methods of doing things, there has never been much interest in
writing high quality games (or the authors apart from the odd one or
two in the very early days - Janko Mrsic Flogel and Damon Chaplin
mainly).

Try googling Mr Flogel Rich, I wonder if this genius is the same person?

I do wonder how we could instil some impetus into the QL market - even
the ZX81 and Spectrum see numerous new games released on a regular
basis, stretching the hardware using the latest techniques.

There are some great Speccy ZX81 emulators on the QL, sadly the speccy ones
aren't able to
lock the emulation speed at 100% ( sadly it goes as quick as it can which may
be well in excess of
100%). Thats the only negative into what is a remarkable achievement for the QL
, I'm always
being beaten at CHESS by my AURORA emulating a Spectrum ( Haven't managed to
run QL PSION
Chess on my AURORA, shame)

Now then, this is amusing ( at least to me! ), I wonder whether it's possible
for a PC, emulating a QL
can emulate a spectrum which is then emulating a ZX81 which is running a
program :-)

*cough* gets coat

Chaps,

Thought i had this written down but no.

I've been sent a zip file. abc_zip via email which i have now
saved

on my PC's C:/drive. II do seem to remember that there was a trick
to getting it successfully unzipped on my QL based Aurora, sadly I
cannot fully remember. If I recall correclly, there's something about
the
naming of the zip, whether it be _zip or .zip that causes the problem.

Can anyone recall ?

Thanks in advance

Ok, i am clear as to my problem.

I need to take a .zip extension from a pc to QL. When i rename .zip to

QL cannot 'see' my file. I suspect i had this problem before. What do
i need to
do to convert from x.zip to x_zip so that my Aurora can unzip.

Cheers ( again ! )

If you copied it to a DOS floppy then Aurora will not see filenames
longer
than 8+3 chrs.
Replacing the dot with the underscore effectively made the name longer

with no extension.
So check / rename the filename on the PC side.
Copy the *.zip to Aurora and rename to *_zip there.
Copying from QPC2 to a QDOS floppy will allow for a longer name.

Re: [Ql-Users] (no subject)

2008-03-19 Thread Neil Riley

Hi Norman,

I've only been on the QL 'scene' for a couple of years whereas
some of the guys here have been here since day 1, back in 1984
which is pretty eye opening. At least I had an original QL which i
waited months for for it to die within an hour of receiving it ( it
was
a very early machine ). Sadly, the QL was doomed from the start,
Sinclair made some drastic errors of judgement IMHO by aiming the
machine as a 100% business machine and why oh why didn't he fit
a 68000 instead of the 68008. Anyway, he did, it failed... but it lived

through hobbiests which is where the guys here come in..

back to your question.. Personally, I've amassed quite a lot of QL
equiplment in a very short space of time.

2 QL's , 1 Trump Card, 1 GC, 2 SGC, 1 full spec AURORA, twin ED drives,

loads of software etc etc

and can say that Id skip the Trump Card and look for a GC or SGC, they

are worth the extra money. Only concider a Trump card if your a bit of

a games player and don't want the games running too quickly.

Good Luck
Neil

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 19 March 2008 00:25
Hi Norman,

The Trump Card will give you bags of extra memory (an extra 640k on top
of
the base 128k IIRC), the ability to plug in DD floppy disks
(720k/disk), and
the always-useful Tony Tebby Toolkit II (aka Toolkit 2, or TK2).

If you're currently lacking any expansion on your QL, then a Trump Card
is
worth having for the disk interface memory.

A Gold Card (or Super Gold Card, if you're one of the lucky few) will
not
only bring you bags of extra RAM (2MB or 4MB for GC or SGC
respectively), a
disk interface capable of driving DD, HD and ED drives (720K, 1.44MB
(?) and
3.2MB per disk) - but most importantly it also replaces the CPU with
(if I
remember correctly) a 68020 or 68040 (GC, SGC) - or maybe it's a
68000/68020, I forget. At any rate, it goes a lot faster...

GCs and SGCs are (rightly) considered the Rolls Royce of original
equipment
upgrades, before you get into the various QL-on-a-PC-card systems
(sorry,
can't remember it's name) and QL emulators.

Other things you might find useful to expand/improve your QL: Minerva
ROMs
(which make many improvements over base QDOS); SuperHERMES which IIRC
much
improves serial i/o keyboard response (and also IIRC allows you to
add an
IBM type keyboard with relatively little aggro). Then there's QBIDE -
a
hard-disk interface; no longer manufactured, and I'd like one of those
myself...

Considering the relatively low level of sales Sinclair suffered
(despite
apparent evidence to the contrary on eBay - there's always plenty of
QL
stuff on sale there), it's remarkable just how much add-on hardware,
and
software, was - and in some cases still is - developed for it.

Cheers!
Ade. (using QLs since 1984!)

Hello Norman (Cook)

Welcome to the list. Exciting days lie ahead for you and your QL!

Re your question - Is this (Gold Card) the sort of thing you need to

beef up your QL?

[Short] Answer: yes! But be aware that there is another and better
version - 'Super Gold Card'.

Is there a list member who can point Norman to the current web-pages
of
QL tech info - rather than me re-inventing the wheel for him? :-)
Please.

Have fun Norman(C) ... and, of course, all other #Normans hereabouts -

and especially, do I like the 'kilter', of the newest web-site - just

announced here ;-) Look forward to more @ same. Thanks.

Regards to all

2007-10-18 Thread Neil Riley
How odd.

The same trouble happens with my set up but the QUBIDE banner stops

after about three full stops. Would my problem be due to the same
cause?

I had this exact problem George when I first got my second hand
Aurora.. the fullstops stopped and i was left with a frozen Aurora. I
think my problem was solved by first removing my RomDisq which allowed a
full reboot as the boot up sequence existed on my WIN1_ as well as the
RomDisq, after that I think i had to re-initialise my RomDisq, I think
either Tony instructed me at this point or it may have been in the
Manual. Either way, I believe this may ( or may not ) help you.

I'm only 40 and yet my memory is and always been dreadful, of course, i
clearly remember my first day in infants school when i was 4 or 5.

I still haven't gotten around to sending Rich my SGC QL so he can

[ql-users] Compact Flah IDE adaptors

2007-05-24 Thread Neil Riley
My plan is to stop using the HD in my Aurora and use a Compact flash or
suchlike instead.

Ok, cf ide adaptor 40pin. male or female connector?

Peter Fox mentions soldering being required...where, why.. ?

I've seen single and duel CF slot ide adaptors, would due adaptors work out the
box?

There adaptors seem to cost about £4 on ebay inc delivery which seems pretty
good
but there are a few to choose from, hence the questions.

cheers

I now have two USBwiz cards.
It was disappointing to find that the serial interface is not RS232C,
which means an addon. I will use a superHermes board for prototyping
RS232C. It will need an addon board with chip/4 caps probably.
A very odd omission on their part. Speed will be up to 230,400 with
superHermes.

The system looks promising. It supports SD (and MMC) as well as many
basic USB devices (printers, modems, mobiles, mice, joysticks, keyboards
and others). It also supports other USB storage like USB hard
drives/card readers and thumb flash.

The storage device support is a mite basic. It supports FAT8/16/32 only
and 8.3 filenames (damn DOS!) and directories. It also has a real time
clock - with an addon battery.

PCMCIA Compact Flash, not SD.
You will be subject though to Qubide's partition.exe, ie max partition

They are still dirt cheap.
I got a 3GB one for about £40. It works brilliantly as the *only* drive
on a Linux based MiniItx internet server. Total consumption is a max 22W
and *totally* silent. A small USB will run it and the internet router
for well over an hour.

I have a 64mb CF that I will never use. All it needs to work with IDE
(and therefore Qubide) is a pcmcia adapter (plastic), and an IDE
interface card (this cost me about £25). Neither have any logic - they
are just connectors.

[ql-users] Slightly off topic but it is local election time

2007-04-27 Thread Neil Riley

Do you remember... 1979? , i suspect you chaps will but do you remember
this rather funny sketch from Not the nine oclock news. Only sending it
because i had a local MP brow beating me on my door step last night and
his waffle to some awkward questions i fired across his bow reminded me
of this.. enjoy... or flame me, your choice. have a good weekend
all. Neil

(ROWAN ATKINSON) A GRIMACING CROSS-EYED MP IS ABOUT TO ADDRESS AN
ELECTION GATHERING. BUNTING DECORATES THE BACKGROUND, ALONG WITH A LARGE
SIGN WHICH READS 'IT'S YOUR VOTE'. HE SPEAKS IN EXAGGERATED HAIR-LIPPED
TONES WITH LOTS OF LIMBS FLAILING.

MP (ATKINSON)
My Lord Mayor... (MELIFLUOUSLY) My Lady Mayoress... (DOES EXAGGERATED
WINK). My Lords, Ladies, Gentlemen, and members of the press, there
comes a time when we must all stand up and be counted. I am standing up
now, and can be counted.

BEAT

One! (GRINS, SELF-SATISFIED) And, with an election pending, 'one's are
about to become singularly important. Because Britain is facing the
gravest constitutional crisis... since 1380! And, you know, many of us
still remember the dark days! And if we're going to prevent the lights
going out on our lives once more, we must ask ourselves crucial
questions!

PAUSE, FLOUNDERS, CONSULTS NOTES

Where are we? How did we get here? Why did we come? Where do we want to
go? How do we want to get to where we want to go? How far do we have to
go before we get to where we want to be? How would we know where we were
when we got there? HAVE WE GOT A MAP?

PAUSES FOR EFFECT

But surely, surely you can see my point. 'Cos what I'm talking about is
life. Because life is one of those things, isn't it, that... that most
of us find it very difficult to avoid. In the words... in the words of
David Dimbleby, life is uncertain. My life certainly has a certain
uncertaincy about it. And I'm certain that yours does to, and with your
uncertaincy, and my uncertaincy, there's certainly a certain degree of
uncertaincy about... of that we can be... quite sure...

CONSULTS NOTES

So, as a party we must not be frightened. And we must be prepared for
this fight. It is easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a
needle, than it is for a camel to...

CONFUSED, CONSULTS NOTES

...that it is for a camel to. Because we don't want to end up, do we,
like the blind man, in the dark room, looking for the black cat... that
isn't there! Goodnight, thank you very much.

Sergiusz,

It takes but a few moments to register and become an ebay user and is
very straight forward. Paypal takes a little longer as you have to wait a few
days for bank account verifications etc but it is relatively painless.

Current price £51 with just over two days to go, i have a feeling there may
be a bidding war on this one which will drive up the final price a bit too far.

Auction ends Sunday @ 6pm

See how you get on.

btw, i monitor this list monday - friday's.

No it is not the root folder. Is the PATH device written by Phil

Basically it allows multiple locations to be transparently searched
under a
single name just like is done via the PATH statement in Windows.

This means you can open a file using a filename of the form
PTH1_FILENAME
and all locations associated with PTH1 will be searched for FILENAME.

I would highly recommend using it.

Yes, I can see how that would be very useful. I shall see how it is set

I see, so even though pth1_ seems to be a list of
separate directories, it doesn't fully work like that, therefore
if an application asks for where to look for it's data, you can't just
use pth1_
expecting the application to see all the data even if you've setup
pth1_ to point to all the places where that data should exist.

PTH is good for your binaries' location. When it failed to find the

Dave,

Im using ZM/hT and specifying the path where it should find the z80
snapshots, hence the reference to 48k_ and 128K_ . sadly, when I
specify pth1_ it would appear that ZM/hT only looks at the first
directory of pth1_ and not the others.

Not a problem, just a bit of a shame.

Neil

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 22 February 2007 15:26
Neil,

I think you will find it can!

As I understand it the PTH device intercepts OPEN calls for files so
finds
them in all the given locations. In the case of the DIR command it
successfully opens the first item in the path, so does not look any
further.

As mentioned you need to be careful when using it with files you intend
to
write. This will always succeed in the first element of the path, so
if
you delete a file on the path, and then try and create a new instance,
the
new instance will not necessarily appear in the same folder as the one
you
just deleted.

Note that Phil's documentation should be on one of the documentation
disks
as the file PATH.TXT.

In terms of using quotes around the filename, I get into the habit of
doing
this as it allows for characters that would not be valid if used
without
quotes.

can
best be describe as 'Beginner'. BUT, before I can tackle that I need to

under the C68 programming environment. Is there a Tutotorial on the
subject?

Do i need to buy back issues of QL Toady or is there an idiots guide
already
out there? Also, Is there a fast way of checking what version of C68 I

currently have, id like to get it bang uptodate first.

Once I'm up to speed i can concentrate on my C and looking ahead, can
understand the idea of interfacing to the ptr env / system traps /
assembler
big ideas etc etc. Maybe in a few years time I can become an
expert
like you chaps.

Re: [ql-users] c68 guide for one who wants to know.

2007-02-21 Thread Neil Riley
Hi Dave,

I have C reference manuals and numerous books on the subject but as
I sit in front of my QL I think, Now, how do i use C68 to write that
Hello
world C program, by that I don't mean the source, i.e.

#include stdio.h

void main(void)
{
// I hope this is right !
printf (Hello World);
}

... or whatever the correct syntax is.

I mean, what do i do/use to enter the source ( i shan't assume i could
use any text
editor although i guess I can). how do i Link / compile... what gets
generated etc
etc etc. It's that which is a mystery to me as is all the numerous
options i read about
in the c68_doc.

Amazed it wasn't PTR'izd with a rather friendly debugger thrown into
the mix ;-) ,
although I have come across a front end screen that seems to link
various parts
of C68 together, perhaps thats my starting point.

Cheers

Neil
p.s. I use Visual Studio 2005 Professional in work which deffo won't
run in 4Mb ram !

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 21 February 2007 15:34

You are correct in that there is no document for those who are not
already
familiar with C. It was deemed a lot of work to write such a document
and
there are plenty of books around that already cover that.

What is on the documentation disk is a guide to how C maps onto the
QDOS
environment. Also available is the detailed library reference
material.

Note that if anyone does provide any getting started type documents I
am
more than happy to add them to the standard set.

I recently took early retirement, so if anything interesting comes up
that
might be c68 related I should now have free time to work on it. There
have
not been any developments in c68 for quite a few years now, but that
does
not mean that there are not a number of things that have not been
identified
that might be worth working on.

Another thing that I have thought of working on is a port of gcc to the
QDOS
environment to replace c68.It would definitely not run on
unexpanded QL
systems as I would expect any system with less than about 4Mb RAM would
be
unable to run it, but would have the advantage of getting a maintained
compiler onto QDOS/SMSE as well as supporting C++ facilities in
addition to
standard C. However it is not worth putting any effort into this if
there
would not be a reasonable demand for it.

Dave

Ah - I do have an email here from Nasta about the Ultra Gold Card
 project:

Well, I wish I could give you good news about that project, but I
 can't.
It has basically been mothballed at the same stage it was when last
 talked
about. I have a number of parts ready and a partial design, but at the
moment, trying to ressurect it would be VERY difficult financially.
 not
impossible if it was only down to the money, but what makes it so
 is the
complete lack of time. There is, however, a lot of documentation,
 which
couldbe used as a good guide to completing the project.

In essence, when last revisited, the GoldFire (that was the project
 name)
spec and documentation was upgraded so that a pair of 68060 CPUs
 could be
used. One was designed as optional, but would have been included in
 the
prototypes, since I have a number of used ones graciously donated
 by Tony
Firshman. These are the 68EC060 version, 66MHz if I recal right.
They were to be coupled to a SO-DIMM SDRAM, 256Mb - the type that
 was used
with (now older) laptops. It is still available. This was to be the
standard, and also maximum configuration as in the eman time, RAm had
become sufficiently cheap. On the IO side, there were the usual
 floppy and
parallel ports (full bidiractional parallel port), but also PC
 style PS/2
mouse and keyboard connectors, as well as 2 fast serial ports.
 These were
all handled by a single Ultra-IO chip, that also comes from the PC
 world.
Extras were to be a PC style sound chip and a Ethernet 10MB/s
 network chip.
A 2M byte flash ROM was intended to hold the system software (SMSQ/E),
which would, of course, be upgradeable.
All of this was designed and well documented.
The part that was documented but was not fully designed was the singe
large logic chip that conencts all of this into a usable single-board
computer. The reason why it was not done, was that the manufacturer
 of the
logic chip had been through a merger with another company, and as a
 result
ended up changing all their developement software - requiring from
 me a
seizable additional investment to buy it, along with an even bigger
investment in time to learn how to use it (it's a different
 approach and
programming 'l;anguage'). To make it worse, the actual logic chip
 ended up
being scrapped by the new company, though, fortunately, there is
 still a
 compatible one available.
The logic implemented by the chip is quite complex. It involved not
 only
connecting the SDRAM to the twin 68060 (that was actually the simpler
task) but also being a 'bridge' betwen the VERY fast world of the
 68060
with the comparatively veruy slow world of the QL bus. In order to
 provide
an open path to further peripheral developement (like an Aurora II and
Qubide II), it also incorporated a protocol that could use the
 existing QL
bus signals to transparently implement a fully 32-bit data transfer
protocol for newer peripherals, while still providing compatibility
 with
the old peripherals, as well as improving their performance. I have
 done a
lot of work on this, the protocols and hardware signals are fully
documented, but the logic for the logic chip was not designed fully.
Finally, the GoldFire also was to include a small on-board
 switching power
supply with very high efficiency, which made it un-necessary to
 have an
extra heatsink (like GC or SGC) as well as adding anability to work
 in 9V
or 5V powered bus systems without any alteration or hardware setup. In
fact, the GF would even be able to supply +-12V at a small current for
serial ports external to it, and enable the user to build a low power
system running off of 5V only. This was fully designed and even
 tested as
a separate module. However, today it could be made cheaper and smaller
with theu se f more modern components.

GF was a very ambitious project in a situation where the cash
 available
for it's completion was fast dissapearing. Follow-up projects were
 also in
the works, as the GF opened up a lot of new possibility. The road map
 included 3 key

2007-02-15 Thread Neil Riley
Hello Jan,

Thanks for your comments, I can understand your point of view and maybe
you're
right, The QL was doomed from the beginning as it was too expensive for
the
'kids' and in my opinion should of been designed as a high end games
machine/
business machine instead of just the latter. I really think if the QL
came out with
64 colour capability and maybe dedicated graphics hardware then the QL
scene
now would be truly alive and well, just like the Speccy scene.

The fact that My QL can emulate a Spectrum without breaking into a
sweat ( admittedly
with a SGC ) can only get my imagination working overtime. I cannot see
why it cannot emulate
a Sega Megadrive for example, And what about other Open Source code
that lives in the
wild. Am i the only one who gets excited at the possibilty? Yes, the QL
could become a
reasonable platform for hobbyists and whilst it would never cross
swords with the Spectrum
and the homebrew machine of choice, the Sony PSP, it could carve it's
own niche.

Re cost, Yes, I'm with you there, cost is prohibitive but sadly, thats
the rut the QL scene
appears to be in but there is plenty of free software out there and
plenty of excellent
software too which I'm discovering. Also, my experience is that the
QL'ers out there
are a great bunch and have a wealth of knowledge.

Perhaps all this talk of new SDGC hardware should cease and a true QL
project should be
thought up, there is enough expertise out there. Sadly, my C / 68000
Assembler is weak
but I'm willing to learn. reaches for Programming the M68000..

A comment Davide made to me has suddenly hit home. Basically he was
 pleased that someone
was still having fun with his product after some 10 years or
more
but wait a minute, the spectrum
scene is still strong so why on earth isn't ZM/ht etc still
commercially available and being advertised on
 Auction sites like Ebay.
With full respect to Davide - he did truly good job with his emulator,
I
do love it - I wouldn't probably buy it today. This time has gone. I
like his approach to provide it for free, which promotes himself better

than low selling product.

I am from spectrum scene and I cannot believe what some people are
writing here. Have you ever think why on earth is the spectrum still so

strong? There are knowledged people willing to share for NO PROFIT.
This
makes the spectrum scene stable, strong and up to date with HW and SW.

IDE HDD interface called divIDE (similar to Qubide) is great example of

such activity : http://baze.au.com/divide/ Anyone can build it from
schematics, buy a DIY kit for 20EURO(!) or buy a complete interface for

30EURO. For 30 EUROs (+/- price of the components) your ZX Spectrum has

much higher value and more features. Reward for these authors is only
success and feedback from users.

Similar trends to have open projects can be seen in Atari scene,
Commodore (look at Commodore One), MSX, CPC (look at try out SymbOS)
etc.

In contrary what I see here on QL scene is still push to commerciality.

This doesn't attract newcomers, because unexpanded QL which you buy on

ebay with four Psion microdrives is nothing more than poor computer
with
cool design and potential. Expanding QL is hard and expensive or not

possible due to lack of expension cards. At the top of it there are no

open source projects to change this status. Software on QL is special
category... So, where is the QL heading?

I don't want to be missinterpretted - it is nothing against you Neil,
but certainly I see here big difference in ZX Scene and QL Scene.
btw, as a side question. I have plenty of _Z80 images that ZM/hT
expects but i have even more .SNA's.
Is anyone aware of a .SNA to _Z80 convertors. Just for fun i renamed
.sna to Z80_rom and whilst ZM/ht
saw the Z80 and even showed initial splash screens, it crashes.

Z80 is compressed, SNA is not. Decompressing not compressed data must
certainly crash.

The other day, I enquired and was kindly given the full version of
ZM/hT by Davide Santachiara
and whilst I haven't a clue as to some of the menu options and what
they do, I've seen enough
to realise what a professional piece of software it is, and with a few
additional features would be
brilliant ( peg to 100% spectrum speed for one ! )

ZM/hT Spectrum emulator
Thanks Tony and yes, i should have been clearer.

I have that ZMXdemo_doc but was under the impression that there is a
fuller version for the retail version of ZM/hT. Maybe it doesn't
exist
 !

 Neil
p.s. It's easily readable in Xchange though. :-)

Ah yes - it is a Spectrum .doc file I suppose.
Well it looked *very* good then (8-)#

Were they Quill compatible or do you have to import?

It's Quill compatible. Just reading it now, and yes, it states that I'm

reading the cut down manual and with the full version you get a 96 page

Laser Printed manual.
