Speaking of Dormagen, I spoke to Detlef (the organiser) yesterday. It looks
like we are going to have a great event!

I just prepared my presentation and will pack up tomorrow.

Attendees: Please bring your EPROM readers to Dormagen to help me read a
patient EPROM (27128) that my EPROMers cannot read.

I look forward to meet as many of you as possible there.

Have a look at QL/E's QLEhelper_bas (or boot_verbose which uses the compiled
QLEhelper) where the command line option \QEMU does exactly this.

Inside QLEhelper_bas look at the PROCedure QemuLator_detect which uses that
Trap call. Feel free to copy, (amend) and use what you need in SuperBASIC.

Sad news! My deepest sympathy. He was a smart and bright person. His
contribution to the QL world is invaluable. A great loss.

I last met George almost 10 years ago at the QL is 30 show which took place in
Edinburgh in October 2014.
Speaking of that show, there are some videos and reports out there:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF7ahxJ3f-k
http://www.gwicks.net/indepth/QLis30workshop.pdf

Had some personal email conversations afterwards (re. TURBO, NET_PEEK, 68008
addressing modes, etc.) which stopped about 5 years ago. From the record George
stopped posting in ql-users in 2018. Whenever I've met some joint QL friends
we've always wondered "How's George doing?"

RIP, George.

Thank you very much John for your interest and support.

Yes, that happened Friday night and was such a great opportunity and awesome
experience!

Invited and motivated by host Carsten Strotmann in November 2020, I had
developed a plan and a worked out script to the present the QL in its glory.
Preparation of the site and rehearsal took about 20 hours. Plus, without the
work invested into "QL/E" in December 2020, the whole demo would not have been
so smooth.

The whole thing has been recorded and is now available on YouTube!

The Grand Tour of Sinclair QL - Planet m68k evening chat Friday Jan 22nd 2021
https://youtu.be/Y4fhN5Qd5bo

This is all about the Sinclair QL world!

Here follows some written information given verbally in the presentation.

First-timers best start with the distribution "QL/E":
http://sinclairql.net/repository.html#QLE

Have fun with QL/E!

In case you want everything (GBs of documentation, software and pictures), get
"QL IS 30 2014 - THE DISTRIBUTION, RELOADED!" which includes "QL/E":
http://sinclairql.net/repository.html#TheDistribution

The book mentioned at the end of the presentation is called "DELETE." See the
pictures of the Sinclair Industrial Design work in this 2013 video "RETURN,
DELETE, TODAY...":

And in the chat after the presentation we also talked more deeply about C
compilers. Here's a good article on "C-Compilers for the QL" and "Cross
Compilation for the Sinclair QL using qdos-gcc"
https://github.com/linneman/snake

I very much enjoyed presenting the Sinclair QL Professional Computer system on
the Planet m68k evening chat!

Yes I know, QCoCo and some other nice tools are still not integrated, but at

Focus for the new version 3.20 was:
- SMSQ/E v3.36 (released April 2020)

- FiFi v5.04 (released March 2020)
- the updates which Marcel did during 2020 to packages such as QPAC2, QD, Chess
- Marcel's new MODPlay (release October 2020)
- Tobias' Magnetic Scrolls interpreter (released December 2019)
- Martyn's Q68 QL NET support (released June 2019)
- Martin's Q68 IP NET support (released December 2020)

[Ql-Users] Oldest QL around?!

2019-12-12 Thread Urs Koenig (QL) via Ql-Users
Currently there's one of the earliest QLs ever built for sale on ebay (item
283703938454, bidding starts at GBP 150; BTW: I'm not the seller, nor
related to him, nor will I bid for it*.). The QL on auction has serial
number D02-001058. This is a damn early serial number, looks like the oldest
QL still around!

I've seen pictures of D02-001059, but that's one after it.

I own a handful of early QLs (build standards D02, D03 and D04), such as
D02-001071 with a date label 15 Mar, D03-001108 (from CCH; with EPROMs)
D03-001123 (the one from Paul; with the PM EPROMs), D04-001276, D04-001305,
...

A rather old web page explains a bit the story of QL build standards &
serial numbers:

And it took me another 7 months to find time and patience to create a QUBATA
partition on a Compact Flash (CF) card with Tetroid Disk Interface (TDI).

Download it here:

Browse to the last column "Download" in the "QL/E" section and look for:

Speaking of PNG and SPR, I also have a wish list. :-)

Marcel's PNGConv.exe misses support for Colour Mode 4 (GD2), equal to QL

Wolfgang's SMSQESprites.jar misses multiple file processing and RLE

QL/E currently (v3) has no easy way of updating its WIN file. Currently a lot
of hand work is needed to migrate user changes to a new release of QL/E. For
the next major release a strategy and upgrade mechanism similar to Windows 10
is planned. In other words starting with this future release, codenamed "Red
kite", QL/E will preserve user installed software. Unlike Windows 10, QL/E will
keep the installed system but upgrade with delta-files. This keeps the upgrade
package as small and transparent as possible.

>From my records Phil Borman maintained the QUANTA edition of QMAC (latest
version 1.06) and QLINK (latest version 1.03). From memory I've met Phil at
one of the QUANTA workshops in the early 1990s.

QL/E has QMAC and QLINK latest versions installed and ready to use (e.g. to
compile SMSQ/E or Minerva).

I did quite some research in the first decade of the 2000s, resulting in the
release of the GST QL software archive in 2010.
http://sinclairql.net/GST_QL_SW_is_PD.html
Dilwyn re-published most of this on his website.

I was trying to find the sources of all the GST software, updated QUANTA
editions of QMAC and QLINK in specific. All my tries (through QUANTA,
sending emails to all documented addresses of Phil) failed and I stopped
seeking exactly 5 years ago.

Unfortunately nobody seems to have the (latest) sources. A former GST
employee (Martin Dickens) recalled on 2009-10-21: "I seem to remember many
years later, and on Jeff's behalf, preparing a copy of the source code and
project files for the QL User's Group which spookily turned out to be in the
small town in Northamptonshire that I was dragged up in - in a building I'd
walked past everyday for 14 years on my way to school. There was a small fee
charged which didn't cover the cost of preparing it, in true Jeff
'barrow-boy' fashion. :-)"

Phil Borman not only maintained QMAC and QLINK, he wrote many other nice QL
software. Saving and sharing the source code would be a great Christmas
present to the QL community.

There must be anyone here or on qlforum who knows Phil personally, have or
find his contact details and can give him a call. Or at least share the
contact details. Anyone?

I wish you all a nice Advent time and Merry Christmas. All the best to you
and your families.

[Ql-Users] Summer is over, QL time approaching...

2018-08-31 Thread Urs Koenig (QL) via Ql-Users
Hi folks,

last day of summer 2018, a summer where I experienced so much. One if not
the greatest summer I ever had.

After I turned 50 just days before the summer started, I inhaled my
once-in-a-lifetime 5 weeks US road trip.

Normally summertime is a QL free time for me and many other QL folks. But
this summer was different.

The US is considered widely as a QL free zone, but in the end I had some of
the best meetings with QLers ever. See Highlights on my blog (Google+).

Before the trip I edited and published the story of MIRACLE SYSTEMS/Stuart
Honeyball based on video material of the Italian QL enthusiasts (YouTube),
scanned and published all those unique ultra-rare Sinclair-papers which I
wanted to scan for years, plus was finally reading all those unique EPROMs
from Sinclair Research and published their content (sinclairql.net).

During the trip I did release the long lost PM ROM (sinclairql.net).

After the trip I was telling the story of the last remaining early D03 build
standard QL with PM (EP)ROM as an unboxing video (YouTube).

Finally I was able to spend a full day plus some extra hours here and there
on QL/E and was able to release v3.18 (Edition 1808, Codename "Eternity",
last updated 12.08.2018) on the very same day Linus Torvalds released Linux
kernel v4.18. It is pure coincidence that both software reached sub-version
18 the same day.

Those were just my personal QL highlights, there were much more QL
highlights such as the releases of PAWN, QL_SD WIN driver, QD2018 and QL-SD
hardware to just name a few.

Tomorrow autumn starts and I hope all of us will find some quality time for
QL tinkering.

In this sense, QL forever!

Dear all,

I'm so shocked and in deep sadness to hear that Rick passed away. I was in
tears when I read the email from his wife (see below).

I last met Rick last October in Cambridge around the Spectrum35 celebration.

He was such a great guy, very smart, with a great sense of humor and so
gifted. He created so many amazing an beautiful things.

In autumn 2014 he was on vacation with his mother at the beautiful Lake
Lucerne, just a few miles from my home.

Betreff: The wonderful Rick

Dearest Friends

With the hugest hole in my heart and a sadness I can't being to understand,
the wonderful person known to many as Rick the Viking, opened his wings and
started on another journey on Tuesday 24 April. And sadly I am not yet able
to join him, despite wanting so much to be with him.

I know that this will come as a shock to many as we had not been open about
his health issues, preferring rather to deal with them in private, even from
both of own families until fairly recently. Rick was diagnosed with cancer
in 2015 and despite successful treatment in 2016, he became unwell again in
early January 2017. I am sure some of you may have guessed something was not
quite right, and to those of you that perhaps did not understand why we
became less and less social during 2017, I hope now you can understand that
this was in no way a reflection of our friendship with you but rather
circumstances dictating what he was or was not able to do.

We have been at a specialist clinic in America - Texas to be precise - since
the end of March undergoing complimentary treatment as a last attempt at
hoping to heal him when he passed away quickly, without warning having
collapsed in the apartment we were rented here. He was in no pain and
surround by huge love from the amazing people that have become firm friends
here - that Texan southern hospitality truly was - and continues to be -
laid at our door. Rick will be cremated here in Texas and I will travel
home with his ashes once the paperwork is sorted probably at the end of next
week.

And, rather than a traditional funeral (which you know is really not his
style) his much loved daughters that he was so proud of - Grace and Daisy -
and his mother Ursula and I will be planning for a celebration of his life
where we can all get together and remember him with love, laughs, smiles,
anecdotes and a few beverages. I will of course let you know details once we
have finalised plans.

Please also do pass on this email to any that you feel may wish to know;
Rick had many, many friends across the broad spectrum of his work and
interests and I have tried to find as many emails as I can from his computer
but am sure I have left some out.

And can I ask that - for the time being - please don't call as I simply
can't face talking right now, but I would dearly love to receive your
messages, emoticons and any photos or memories you wish to send of the
person who was - simply - the wonderful Rick, love of my life.

And please take 5 minutes , raise a glass or 10 , and think about the
beautiful Rick, the one and only Viking and all the good times we have all
had with him. As they always say - but I do believe - he is watching over us
and sends love to you all and is only sorry that he was not able to see you
all before he left.

Great stuff! Thank you!

SuQcess will be added to a future release of QL/E.

I feel the spirit of more and more QL software becomes freed.

It's time to end this non-sense of "commercial" QL software. The only chance
for the QL to survive is that it becomes as free as possible. Rigid and
strict positions in this respect are preventing the QL from having a future

Re: [Ql-Users] QL/E v3.16 (Codename "Snow white swan", Edition 1702) is out now!

2017-03-14 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Thanks guys for the feedback.

I'm fully aware and realistic that for QL experts like you, who all
developed and maintained their own setups (QXL.win), QL/E is not the 1st
choice. In fact QL/E (QLE.win) is a derivate of my own developed QXL.win
which I started when I got my first QXL card in the early 1990s.

As you said, for "back to the QL" or "new to the QL" users, QL/E is a quick
and easy start. Zero installation, zero configuration, just download the ZIP
file, unzip it to your desired storage location and start the QL VM of your
choice. Not only the wide choice of prepared VMs, also the huge amount of
preinstalled software and the possibility to build/make SMSQ/E are so much
time-saving for beginners and even experts.

But I'm pretty sure QL/E can be handy for you guys too, because it comes
with all the latest QL VMs and documentation (roadmap is to release updates
of QL/E quarterly) and, even more important, the setup and configuration is
built and tested with maybe the widest line-up of QL compatible systems
(QPC2, SMSQmulator under Windows and Linux, QXL card, QemuLator, uQLx on
both Raspberry Pi and PC, QL with GC and QL-SD, MIST) with both SMSQ/E and
Minerva.

A nice option for experts is to replace the QLE.win file of QL/E with their
own maintained QXL.win file (just copy your file to become the QLE.win
file). They then benefit from the QL/E framework (the preinstalled and
preconfigured VMs and SMSQ/E).

And, as said, QL/E is pretty handy as a Live-System to try out new things.
And its sensitive BOOT program and the option to configure and fine-tune the
boot process without changing a single line of code in the BOOT program is a
neat feature. A lot of time went into developing the BOOT program and the
QLECFG script.

And with the work on QL/E I found and reported many bugs in the VMs and OS
and also submitted change-requests. Thanks to QL/E, SMSQmulator and QPC2 are
in the current great state.

Maybe wrong, but at least the behavior was the same as on Minerva. Minerva
allows this, at least with v1.63 to v1.98.

QDOS SuperBASIC (AH, JM, TB, JS, MGG, TY05) does not allow this and all
report error -4.

This is quite a change of behavior for SMSQ/E's SBASIC. Getting a bit closer
to SuperBASIC, but not 100% identical because SBASIC reports the error as
-168.

But due to the fact that our S*BASIC variants handle this differently most
likely the programmers gave attention to this. Only time will tell if this
fix is a good one or if we see programs failing which worked until v3.27.

Re: [Ql-Users] [ql-users] North American QL Show Saturday September 30th 2006

2016-09-30 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Do you remember todays date 10 years ago? It's been a while...

Yes! In fall 2006 a North American QL show did happen in Niagara Falls,
Ontario, Canada.

Here's my journey report which I wrote on October 1st 2006:
“Once I had collected enough bonus miles to take an intercontinental flight
from Zürich via Frankfurt to Toronto I finally decided to join this show. I
was so busy at work that the final decision to attend was made the weekend
before the show. My wife said: “Do something good to you. If QL tinkering
makes your mind happy, go for it.” Even the flights were booked on bonus
miles for more than a month already, the car and hotel stays were booked
just days before the journey. I arrived on Thursday September 28th in
Toronto. The next day I drove to Niagara Falls where we all met at 6 p.m.
for the traditional QL group dinner. We went to a Korean restaurant just
across the street of the hotel. For me this was my first and only Korean
food experience. On Saturday September 30th the QL show was held at the
meeting room of the Super8 Hotel. Eleven QLers (not counting their wives and
other family members) were attending. Jim showed the new QDT FileManager and
an intensive discussion regarding suggested additions to it happened. Tony
was busy all day to fix QLs of the North American users. I had some good
chats with Colin and Herb on Memory Management. Herb and myself continued to
swap experiences and files for over an hour after the show had already
ended. It is definitely not enough to have a QL show every second year (not
only to fix the many broken systems). On Sunday those who stayed went
downtown and to the Falls. Those who stay in the Toronto area will meet for
a dinner on Tuesday night.”

Pictures of the show can be seen in the QL PICTURE GALLERY (QLPG) either
online on OneDrive

or in the pic section of THE DISTRIBUTION. See folder Shows\2006 Niagara

Meanwhile QDT is freeware and is part of THE DISTRIBUTION and QL/E. See

Maybe no need for a rewrite but for a tweak. Why? Did you notice that the
slow graphics are not constantly slow?
Watch those 20 seconds of Photo QL again
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4xwT65cLU0#t=2m9s
and you'll see that when picking another QL window then the graphics are
fast again.

If it would be consistent (slow or fast) then I would not argue.

And as said, not all machines running Windows 10 have this problem. I still
do not have a clear pattern but it looks like more recent machines (Intel
Haswell or Skylake platforms with i*-4xxx or i*-6xxx CPUs) are affected.
I've seen a Sandy Bridge Machine (i5-2xxx CPU) which runs QL graphics at
rocket speed, even under Windows 10.

Can some other QLers please step in and report how their upgraded (or new)
Windows 10 machines are performing QL graphics wise compared to the time
before the upgrade?

[Ql-Users] Another topic.

2016-07-11 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Hi QLers,

I think we need another topic.

Recently most discussions on ql-users and qlforum were about Rich's Software
Preservation Project and Copyright. Even I have a clear opinion on all that
I will not write it down here for two major reasons:

1. English is not my native language and I feel a bit uncomfortable to
find 100% the right words. Also to write it down that it clearly expresses
what I think my need some considerable amount of time, which I do not have
or do not want to spend at the moment (just days before my summer vacation
with plenty to do at work and private life).

2. I better spend my QL time with doing QL stuff than to discuss the
above.

Last week I started the Windows 10 upgrade job on all my PCs and all the PCs
I somehow control.

Last week I documented how our fastest PC in the family was performing QL/E
under Windows 8.1 64-bit. There's a video about that which shows - among
other things - how QTop-Index (New PCW benchmarks) and QTop-Demos are
performing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDhpsHZocAM

This was before the upgrade to Windows 10 which was done the next day as a
fresh installation, not as an in-session update.

Having Windows 10 64-bit on this machine for almost a week now is nice. All
runs great, but running QPC2 shows that some QL graphic operations are
substantially slower than expected and what counts more, they are much
slower than running exactly the same under Windows 8.1. To document this
behaviour I made another video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4xwT65cLU0

Watch it carefully and re-test on your rig.

I think that the slow performance of Photo QL, QTop-Index (TEXTSCRN,
GRAFSCRN benchmarks) and QTop-Demos (CIRCLE, ELLIPSE, SPACE, WORM demos) is
just the symptom not the source of the problem.

It's not the first PC with this weird QPC2 behaviour. I have seen this on
several PCs running Windows 10 but not all. Some are running (fast) as
expected. About a year ago I first reported this on qlforum (Fri Jun 05,
2015 8:36 pm), but nobody took up the line on that.

http://qlforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3
 =1282#p10936

Anyone? Marcel?

QL forever!

Urs
  http://www.sinclairql.net/

P.S. SMSQmulator seems not affected; its performance is comparable when
running on the same hardware under various Windows versions (7, 8.x, 10).
Using latest QPC2 (v4.04) and SMSQ/E (v3.26) does not better the situation.

[Ql-Users] uQLx on Linux (various HW platforms, various Linux distributions)

2016-06-17 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Hi QLers,

the only three Linux machines I own are my NAS, a SubNotebook and my
Raspberry Pi. While the NAS has its job to do, the SubNotebook gets dust on
a shelf, the Raspi gets at least fired up whenever I want to test a new
version of QL/E.

At work the situation is completely different, at least at the moment. We
are ramping up some new point-of-sales computers (3 series with the
following platforms: BayTrail, Haswell, Skylake) and are making sure the
retail applications work smoothly under both Windows and Linux. While the
Windows world is easy for me, Linux is still a bit of a mystery. Don't get
me wrong, installing a Linux distribution is most of the time trouble-free,
installing professional packages such as Java or device drivers for receipt
printers, barcode scanners, etc. is also easy and works most of the time. My
personal Unix/Linux know-how is somehow limited, but I'm save on the
desktops and with graphical dialogs plus I know some basic shell commands
and the purpose of some folders.

Installing and running SMSQmulator under Linux is trouble-free, I just unzip
the QL/E distribution and start it using the shell command "java -jar
entire_path_to_jar_file".

But even I wrote the step-by-step installation guide for uQLx ARM for the
Raspberry Pi, I constantly fail to install and run uQLx on Intel based Linux
systems. IIRC the last time I succeeded was about 12 years ago at a Swiss QL
workshop where Jon Dent and Markus Dettwiler were giving me a helping hand.

A year ago John was wrote to me:

> Have you seen
https://github.com/slimlogic/uqlx-fork

> This has a version of uQLx that now works on native 64bit Linux boxes

> without seg faulting when trying to modify files.

> You could previously run uQLx on a 64bit Linux only if you had the

> 32bit i386 architecture packages.

End of 2013 Peter Graf sent me a work-in-progress version of uQLx with
QL_BDI support (uqlx-src-peter-17-11-2013.zip). He stated that this works on
his (then) recent Debian 32-bit.

Is it only me or is it true that all the old uQLx distributions plus the two
above are not able to be installed and run on recent Linux systems (modern
HW platforms, recent 32-bit or 64-bit Linux distributions). I one says one
or the other uQLx distribution works could he or she provide an
understandable and working step-by-step guide.

Hi Peter,

I have an easy way for you at hand:
Download QL/E, a well maintained and ready to run QPC2 configuration with zero

It's just a 1-2-3 and you're ready:

2. Well zero configuration only if you want to use QL/E without your QXL.win.
In your case start the QPC2.exe in the qle folder and make sure you hold the

3. Open the "Devices" form and configure WIN2 to the full path-filename of your
personal QXL.win file (e.g. D:\DATA\QXL.win) and close the form using "OK".

Now you're ready, start the QL emulation using "OK" on QPC2's main form.

The QL/E environment boots and you get a desktop with many utilities available.
Use your preferred ones (QPAC2 Files, MasterSpy, SBASIC, you name it) to review
and edit your personal BOOT file which is on WIN2_.

Whenever you feel ready exit QPC2 and restart it like explained in step 2. Then
open the "Devices" form and configure WIN1 to the full path-filename of your
personal QXL.win file (e.g. D:\DATA\QXL.win) and close the form using "OK". Now
your (edited) QXL.win is mounted as WIN1.

Start the QL emulation using "OK" on QPC2's main form and your QXL.win BOOTs.
If the boot process still fails, go back to step 2.

If all is well, you can save QPC2's device configuration using the "Save"
button on QPC2's main form.

Good luck!

QL forever!

Cheers,
Urs

Wolfgang, PM sent. ;-)

It was my intention to release the last and final version 3.04 of "QL IS 30
2014 - THE DISTRIBUTION" before any new release of QPC2 or SMSQ/E. I
succeeded by a few hours. :-)

Reason is that this DISTRIBUTION is somehow linked to the QL IS 30
anniversary (2014). Hence it deserves to come with the 2014 edition of QPC2.
;-)

Future releases of THE DISTRIBUTION will be named, organized and published
differently.

I shall now archive all the works and then start working on something new,
“QL/E+ – THE DISTRIBUTION”. While “QL is 30” was somehow retrospective (see
the crow on the wallpaper of QL/E v3.1x which looks back), “QL/E+” is
visionary and forward oriented. It will for sure come with the 2016 edition
of QPC2. More about “QL/E+” later. Stay tuned.

Today is the release of the final version 3.04 of "QL IS 30 2014 - THE
DISTRIBUTION". This marks the end of my "QL is 30" activities.

The new version comes with the latest versions of SMSQ/E (v3.25) and
SMSQmulator (v2.18) carefully integrated into QL/E, QL EMULATORS, QL ON A
STICK and ZEXCEL SPECTRUM EMULATOR. Late additions in the SQPP exclusive
gems part are the original QL Demonstration software by Sinclair Research
Ltd and the QL SCREEN-COLLECTIONS (QLSC). QL/E has been vastly improved and
now supports at least seven (7) QL compatible platforms (QPC2, SMSQmulator,
QXL, QPC1, QemuLator, uQLx and QL-SD). Plus many improvements and tweaks
here and there. This new and final version of "QL IS 30 2014 - THE
DISTRIBUTION" fits again on a DVD, previous versions were slightly over the
limit. Almost perfect.

Have fun with THE DISTRIBUTION!

Re: [Ql-Users] Today 30 years ago...

2016-04-23 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Hi QLers,

April 23rd, what does this date say to us? Saint George's Day, The
Bayerische Reinheitsgebot (regarding the ingredients of beer) was signed 500
years ago, William Shakespeare died on that day 400 years ago, the Sinclair
ZX Spectrum was launched 34 years ago. Great day in history!

The QL’s official life span was from January 1984 to April 1986 when Amstrad
axed the QL. Well, I’ve seen some Samsung QLs manufactured in May 1986, but
those were most likely built that month on behalf of the last valid order
from Sinclair Research Ltd.

Although 2 ¼ years sound like a short period and I cannot remember how long
it felt back in the 80s, I personally felt exactly how long it is when I
judge the “QL is 30” activities which started on the QL’s 30th launch
anniversary back on January 12th 2014. Even I was busy in both life and work
I’ve spent quite an amount of time (several hundred hours) for and with the
QL during the last 26 months. To name just the major milestones like the “QL
is 30” website http://www.qlis30.org.uk/, “QL IS 30 2014 – THE
DISTRIBUTION”, the ZX-TEAM-meetings 2014, 2015 and 2016 in Germany, meeting
Rick Dickinson and David Karlin again in 2014 and 2015, attending La Nuit
des Musées 2014 in Switzerland, the QLis30 dinner and workshop in Scotland,
testing and integrating new versions of SMSQ/E and SMSQmulator, updates to
QL/E and THE DISTRIBUTION, this was a very intense QL period, at least for
me.

Today is the release of the final version 3.04 of “QL IS 30 2014 – THE
DISTRIBUTION”. This marks the end of my “QL is 30” activities.

Dear QLers,

In that week 30 years ago the Sinclair computer business was bought by
Amstrad and the QL was axed. It was that Sunday after the press conference
when the message did arrive here in Switzerland. I was in my first months
with my first personal QL so the news hit me hard.

On today's date 16 years ago my son was born. This was one of the greatest
moments in my entire life.

I'm currently in the process of releasing the next version of THE
DISTRIBUTION. Recent updates of SMSQ/E and SMSQmulator have been worked in.
Major changes and enhancements are in the QL/E part of THE DISTRIBUTION. The
start-up sequence (aka BOOT program) of QL/E has been reworked and enhanced
to enable QL/E to also run on QPC1, uQLx (Raspberry PI), QL with QL-SD
(should also run on the MIST) and Q-emuLator. As a goody QL/E now comes with
Per Witte's D-Miner game and an adapted version of Francois Lanciault's 2048
game.

While QL/E is ready for release today, completion of THE DISTRIBUTION may
take some more days.

That's what I expected and what I'm also experiencing. On systems with a
slight different configuration of QPC2 and SMSQmulator (e.g. screen setting)
this freeze does not happen even if I use this QLE.win and do exactly the
same steps.

Did you try it with the configuration of QPC2 and SMSQmulator supplied in the
THE_DISTRIBUTION_qle.ZIP?
Using your configuration may give a change to the scenario which may result in
a non freeze.

I've been through this already. At least partly. There are extensions which
are essential.

As written and showed in my videos, disabling QDT would help, but this is
not the solution because QDT is nice to have it loaded.

Changing the position of QPAC2 Files does also help as does changing of the
screen resolution.

But as Marcel has pointed out, the source of the problem may still be there.

It is essential that you use the complete QL/E, not only the QLE.win.
Especially the screen settings (e.g. resolution, colour depth) are
important. QPAC2 Files must popup itself at exactly the position with
exactly the number of files to display like in my scenario. Otherwise the
system may not freeze. I did not (yet) found another scenario to Freeze
SMSQ/E with QL/E.

The freeze comes after the content of WIN1_ are being displayed. When you're
able to view a file then the scenario was not 100% equal.

Nothing to complain about if it's at least a Core2Duo with at least 2GB RAM.

You did misinterpret/misunderstand this. Just save a file (e.g.
WIN1_boot_bak) ONCE. Then reboot and try my scenario. QPAC2 Files will not
fail anymore. I think it's because displaying the content of the ROOT of
WIN1_ is then slightly different (it has 1 file more in the ROOT directory)
and the failure/freeze is not happening here anymore. At least not at this
stage.

There are only a few (less than 20, depending on the host and target
machine) extensions loaded, not a quadrillion. ;-)

I did some more tests earlier this week and can tell you that when you
disable QDT to load (use the S*BASIC PROC QLE_CFG), then with the same
scenario QPAC2 Files and the System will not Freeze at all.

As it may be known I'm maintaining QL/E - a pre-configured and ready to go
QL environment (applications, desktops, games, tools, utilities) using the
latest versions of the virtual QL machines (aka emulators) QPC2 and
SMSQmulator and the Operating System SMSQ/E - since 2002. Since 2014 QL/E is
part of THE DISTRIBUTION. Core of QL/E is a "QXL.WIN" file named QLE.win (a
virtual WINchester hard-drives in QXL format). Last public release is v3.11
from Nov 2nd 2015. This version is fine-tuned for use with QPC2, SMSQmulator
and QXL. Download link:
http://www.sinclairql.net/repository.html#QLE

For a couple of months now (the winter) I was busy adapting QL/E for other
QL compatible platforms running under QDOS/Minerva, such as systems which
include the emulators Q-emuLator, uQLx (Raspberry Pi) plus also real
hardware like MIST (QL core with QL-SD support) and the original Sinclair QL
with QL-SD. I'm almost ready with this and shall release QL/E v3.13 in the
coming weeks if not days.

While testing QL/E on various systems and with various scenarios and use
cases I experienced several FREEZEs of the OS (the QL side, not the host
when running the QL as an emulation). After such freezes the only
possibility to bring the QL/E system back to life was to "power it off" and
restart it. In terms of QPC2 a restart was only successful after a remaining
but invisible QPC2 task has been terminated using the Windows Task manager.

At around the 2016 ZX-TEAM meeting which took place last weekend in Germany
I experienced multiple freezes of QL/E. OK, I was QLing many many hours
recently. The more hours you run QL(/E) environments the greater is the
chance you experience something. The good thing was that I got the
impression that there's a common pattern to the freezes. I got the
impression that it always was when QPAC2 Files was used.

Because we have a Windows Freeze case at work which is very hard to trace
and analyse (visitors of the ZX-TEAM meeting will know) I wanted to at least
catch the QL/E Freeze case.
Last Thursday I was repeatedly able to reproduce the freeze using my QL/E
v3.13 wip (work-in-progress). I then reduced the steps needed to get the
freeze. In the end I can say you can get the freeze when doing this
scenario:
1. Start QL/E (e.g. start QPC2.exe).
2. From now on do not use the mouse, do not use the mouse pointer.
3. After the BOOT sequence of QL/E is completed (SBASIC job 0 is minimised
as "System" in the button frame, wait until Photo QL has completed
displaying the QL collection photo) press +<\> to pick "System".
4. Now that you see the BOOT process windows in the middle of the screen
press + to pick QPAC2 "Files".
5. Once QPAC2 "Files" is on screen press then followed by
to choose the drive "WIN1_" as the Source Directory.
6. Now the QL/E system freezes!

What I did to isolate the problem relies on QPAC2 or at least is caused by
QPAC2 is:
- Running QL/E with SMSQmulator does also freeze. > It's not a QPC2 problem.
- Running QL/E with other version of SMSQ/E does also freeze. > If it's a
SMSQ/E problem then it's there for some time already.
- Executing DRVCHK and DRVLINK does not find anything wrong with the
QLE.win.
- Copying the entire content of the QLE.win to a freshly formatted QLE.win
and the running QL/E. with this does also freeze. > It's not a problem of
the content/structure of the "QXL.WIN" file
- Using the BOOT file of previous versions of QL/E does not help; such a
modified system does also freeze.
- After inspecting and comparing various QLE.wins (some which have been used
and new files have been created or files have been deleted) I found out that
some of those do not freeze. I then found an easy workaround for the Freeze
case. Perform one time a simple SAVE WIN1_boot_bak (e.g. between steps 3 and
4) and you never get the freeze.

My feeling is that QPAC2 Files has a problem when displaying the content of
the chosen Source Directory WIN1_ at exactly the position where QPAC2 Files
is positioned in above mentioned scenario.

Enjoy the sunny Sunday!

Another QL update in year 31 after launch:
The other day I had another look on the good old year 2000 version of the QL
Picture Viewer program Photon. I’ve learned that Photon has a nice wallpaper
option (\w). Gave it a go and re-implemented wallpaper in the BOOT program
of QL/E - the ultimative pre-configured virtual QL Environment for use on
your PC. As desktop background I have chosen a nice picture of a crow on
green grass which I’ve photographed last summer. This tinkering with Photon
eventually resulted in a new release of QL/E (v3.11) and THE DISTRIBUTION

Great report Geoff!

Currently I'm having problems displaying your QLis30 webpages
http://www.gwicks.net/QLis30.htm
and
http://www.gwicks.net/qlis30dinner

Did you take them down?

The http://www.qlis30.org.uk/ (updated today) and maybe other places in the
web are still linking those pages.

[Ql-Users] QLis30 another presentation ready...

2014-10-07 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Hi all,

I took 2 days off from work to complete the update of QL is 30 2014 The
Distribution. I'm ready to demo the current state (RC2) at the workshop in
Edinburgh.
http://www.qlis30.org.uk/#TheDistribution

I will take my notebook computer with me. Best would be to present with a
beamer. Length of the presentation can vary from 10 minutes to an hour.

See you in Edinburgh this coming weekend.

Cheers,
Urs

Re: [Ql-Users] QLis30 dinner

2014-06-19 Thread Urs Koenig (QL)
Update from my side: Flights (easyjet from Basel), Car and Hotel are booked
now. Arriving on Wednesday with my family, the trip will have 3 major topics
Scotland, Edinburgh and the QLis30 workshop.

I prefer a QLers dinner on Friday. Other family members should be
allowed/welcomed ;-), but I think my folks will enjoy this evening on their
own (let Daddy talk on his QL things) ;-).

@Geoff: When running the QLis25 show in 2009 I had great success using
Doddle to manage attendance for both the show and dinner, including
preferences. It's easy to setup and use and it's free.
http://doodle.com/en_GB/

In my opinion emails on this list are ok but will not reach the complete QL
community and may not show the full picture.

Cheers,
Urs

Even I'm currently in lurking mode due to life and work I was simply
catching your yesterdays' post, updated the QLis30 website and spread the
word on qlforum, World of Spectrum, the German QL Forum, Google+ and on
LinkedIn. I hope the event gets some more attention by doing this.

Cheers, Urs

One of our considerations is that Edinburgh is a tourist destination. If
we hold
the event too early it could be too busy and hotels too expensive.

 October might be possible,
I had a discussion with my family this morning. We could imagine spending
our autumn vacation in Scotland. Perfect dates for the QLis30 show would
then be Sat Oct 4 (favourite) and Sat Oct 11 2014.

I really hope that a QLis30 show will happen this year.

QL forever!

Very best,
