Why is it hard to believe? In St. Louis, Missouri area where I live -- a
few months ago they stole a Van and a disabled childs powerchair with it. In
the U.S.A. cars , vans and trucks get stolen every several minutes around the
clock.Criminals do not care if it hurts you or leaves you helpless or even
causes you to die. A paraplegic friend of mine had someone steal his roho seat
cushion causing him to get pressure sores. Dan H.

  Congratulations Dan,

I know I felt the same way as you Dan. Now we hear of someone, Henry living
53 years ago was so sorry to hear about his syrinx as many of you know about
their pain, which is hard to treat and worry about their growth ? Please
correct me if I'm wrong, Billy or anyone else who knew him when he was on the
list. It's unfortunate I did not get to be on the list at that time. My 33rd
anniversary was July 26 and I forgot to mention it. Time does fly even if you
aren't having fun all the time. We goes through some hard times and then,
there are some good times. I think and pray for all of you who are having those
hard times, whether he sores or other medical problems. What are your plans
for your anniversary? I guess I got to do my fun last night when I saw , The
Fray. They put on a great show in KC, especially on the third row.. We were
there last concert in the US and they're going to be gone for year making
another CD and they said they would be back. A guy from the radio station
promoting was going around thanking everybody for coming, which I had not seen
done for By the time I got to the gate it was locked, so a guardian angel came
and saw me sitting there and opened up the gate. The box I keep my phone iPod
and mobile phone at home on had fallen almost off my lap. I had somebody get
inside to get money for a sweatshirt and it was not refashioned , so he helped
me with that also. That had never happened before, the gates getting locked
and my friend was at the wrong date, so security went to tell them where I was.
People are really nice to me at that venue. I can go by myself freely so my
friend saved the seats as it was General admission without any danger that I
was ever in fear as there are so many security guards around. I guess that was
my celebration for my anniversary. What do others do on the list like to do on
their anniversary?

  Happy decade Dan!
  Dana

is over twice the amount that usually is! The lady at the checkout told him
that it was because of the corn (you know... the food the cows need) .

My husband began to tell her that no, it is not the corn, it is just
because you CAN charge what you are charging just like all the gasoline
stations. There is no oil shortage anywhere and our deficit has nothing to do
with that either!

Everyone loves to point the finger and play the blame game. Of course
their fingers never get pointed towards themselves God forbid!

Bill or W please post this to the list for others. One day I will
get this Comcast thing taken care of. In the meantime... be the good guys and

Why do you need 20 hours/day of nursing service? Couldn't a nurse's aid do
some of that? Usually nursing (RN/LPN) are for trach care, changing caths,
wound care, etc. A nurse aid could get you dressed and up. Companion care can
fix/serve meals, do laundry/housekeeping, etc. Have you asked about utilizing
companion care and nurse aids more?

Yesterday was a bittersweet kind of day. I had a meeting with Voc Rehab
and Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCI). Voc Rehab is currently
paying tuition, books, and nursing while I'm at school. BSCI pays for my
nursing outside of school. Everything has been ok, until the meeting. At
the meeting, BSCI told me that they need to cut my services to their
guidelines starting in October. Basically what they told me is that if
I can't cut my nursing services down to 3 hours a day (I get at least 20
hours a day now) they will terminate me from their program. That means I
will not be going to school and I will not be able to move out. My
parents would have to take care of me 24/7. This is is so frustrating to
me. My condition did not improve enough to not need nursing. I wish it
did. How can they help and support me and then tell me to cut back? I
can get attendant care and personal care but those people can't give me
medication (which I get every 3 hours), they can't cath me, nor can they
put oxygen on me (which I sleep with). I told them to put it in writing
and I'm going to appeal the process. I'm just so pissed. I don't know
what else to do. Thought I'd share.

motor gets weak and will not pull the door with sufficient strength
to latch the door. The door also runs slower than normal.

I understand IMS sold to Braun and I can keep purchasing

Any one have any experience or know where to get a

That is a very interesting topic. How was the health of the quadriplegic you
know Bill? Paul, what was the cause of your friend's death? . guess it really
depends on how well you take care of yourself and of course if your caregivers
are careful with your skin and that kind of care that they give you. I had
always thought that we died from lung or kidney problems. I don't know what

Does anyone know who I can contact to get Oklahoma Dept. of Human Services
(ODHS) to get my old Medically Necessary standing wheelchair replaced.
Originally that standing w/c was bought by Dept. of Vocational Rehab. (DVR) in
1997. In 2004 I took DVR to a fair hearing to get this w/c replaced. I had to
represent myself which took forever to prepare for. Relying on others for
volunteer help getting prepared and to my amazement won that Hearing. Much to
my disappointment DVR appealed that decision and it was overturned against me
by the Director of Human Services. Based on false information which I could
prove.
Unfortunately a well known attorney approached me offering his
services pro-bono to help me meet the deadlines. He took my information and
then let the time run out before dumping me. And DVR then dropped me from their
program stating I was uncooperative. At that time my Advantage Program case
manager said they would get the new Medically Necessary standing wheelchair
since I didn't have any other pay source. Now 3 years later and countless
promises made by my case manager that a new w/c was ordered, have fallen
through. But I have received nothing but one excuse after another. I am being
discriminated against due to my disability. I am ignorant about where to go for
help. The agencies in Oklahoma that are supposed to help have not done so. I
now realize how ignorant I am letting that attorney take that documentation
concerning the appeal. But I have been on pain med's over 7 years which really
impaired my judgement and I really screwed up.
I am currently living in a home in my most integrated setting. Not
having a dependable wheelchair to use daily is making living here increasingly
difficult. Any advice on how to climb out of this hole would be much
appreciated. Glory to GOD Sincerely, Jim Rice

  .

It only does it when going top speed and I hit a rock, then all the sudden.

I have a big red container for my needles but am told that I need more. My
supra
pubic cath site is cleaned daily with betadine. I use disposable diapers.
All
these need to be in marked containers. When emptied, they have to go to a
special
  medical refuse site.

Does anyone do all this? I have been putting the diapers, double bagged, in
the
trash. The betadine just goes in the regular trash.

  Hi Nancy,

The only reason I purchased was because my insurance covered after my co-pay
was paid , which I was extremely surprised that they would. I get all my
ostomy supplies from Edgepark medical supply. They send supplies every three
months, so that is convenient as you don't have to remember to order. I get
all my chux at express medical as they seem to be a good price. Where does
everybody else get their supplies?
Where does everybody get their tubing? I used to extend my bedbag for my
night bag and day bag, for the ends of my pencils I use on my splints and to
connect long straws together to reach my mouth from my 2 gallon jug I use at
night and straws I use in my chair or to drink hot tea.

I was able to do a number of fun things this week, see Ben Folds and John
Mayer, who were great in an outdoor theater in Bonner Springs Kansas. I have
seen both before and John Mayer has added saxophone, trumpet and regular piano
rather than just the electric this time I went to the friend of the zoo picnic
that lasted until 8 p.m. last night. Our zoo in Kansas City is so spread out
it's hard to see a lot of the animals , but I saw more than I usually do.
Friday I'm seeing a play a Prairie home companion and Jim Brickman both in the
outdoor theater we have in KC, MO. on Friday and Saturday. That's what I like
about summer, there are so many events and is so much easier to go places, not
needing any outerwear.

  Thanks a lot.
  Dana

My problem with bleach was my aides would unfortunately bleached things I
didn't want bleached.
How do you use the Freebreeze, just on the outside? I guess when I have
insurance no longer when my stepmom retires, I will have to use bleach.

Hi Dana, save yourself some money. For the bedside bag, go to Dallor General
and get cheap bleach or plain old vinager and a plastic ketchup squeeze bottle.
You can clean both bags. I use New Image by Hollister for urostomy appliances
and there is very little urine smell, when there is Freebreeze works great.
  Good Luck,
  Nancy

I use a shoulder strap now, but I have someone put it on before I get into
the vehicle. I can go all day with an on, but I preferred to usually only have
it on when I am driving. If you would like I can try to have my brother take
some photos tonight or tomorrow and send them to you.

As for Velcro I have a friend that had a shoulder strap that came from the
right side and then went down to his left. It was bolted in down on the seat
and on the upper right of the back rest. How he was able to secure it was by
putting the top strap through a D ring and then attaching the Velcro of the top
strap to itself.

TM is transverse myelitis. It is an inflamation of the nerves in the spinal
cord ,which produces lesions on the spinal cord, and leaves a person paralyzed
from the spot of the lession down. About 1/3 of those affected recover almost
totally, about 1/3 have some recovery and about 1/3 have no recovery, I'm one
of those with no recovery. This is probably not a very good explanation, but

Osteomyelitis is a bone infection, usually caused by bacteria, that can be
either acute or chronic. This disorder usually occurs as a result of an
infection in one part of the body that is transported through the bloodstream
to a bone in a distant location. Among children and teens, the long bones of
the legs and arms are most frequently affected. In adults, osteomyelitis most
often affects the vertebrae of the spine and/or the hips.

the full length of time you have spent off of your wound completely? I had a
wound (and so far only one) back in 2001, it got infected and tunneled, then
turned into osteomyelitis
it literally just about killed me. A full thickness muscle flap was
required, and then six weeks of being restricted to bed only. I know, six weeks

To me, selecting a vehicle to be adapted only because you like its looks is
very impractical. I like the looks of a Mini Cooper, but I could never get in

make compromises in order to get a vehicle that works for us.

Funny but I know the project engineer for the PT Cruiser. Mike is a true
mechanical person who is very talented. Mike knows as Ron does that the
Cruiser is not for everyone. You can't put 5 gallons of gold, into a 4 gallon
bucket. There are those that have them and like them and do well.

I personally don't know the size or weight limits of the vehicle and that is
sad, as I know its just not for everyone. Maybe those who sell and market the
vehicle are the guilty ones. Those who tease you that the PT Cruiser is just
the vehicle for you.
Ultimately, you have to be a smart consumer to be a wise shopper.

  Hi,
It was so good to read that someone else has leaky legs. Mine started about
9 months ago after I had gotten Botox in my legs. I get the injections every 3
months and it varies 35 to 45 sites. I bleed very easily so there is 2 nurses
holding pressure and if needed a small bandage is put on. I started feeling
like my legs were wet before leaving the office and everyone said it was a
feeling left over by the shots, After getting home and in my bed you could see
the wet areas on my sheets ,not bad, but they were there.
Since then it happens after the shots every time, and sometimes in between.
It usually last 2-3 days. It was strange to read it today- for
no reason I seem to be leaking and I don't get my shots for 2 more weeks, and
I can hardly wait.
I got out of the hospital about a week ago because of lung mess and came
home to continue my treatments. A day or 2 later I kept telling my husband to
check my hips and move them around ,,,something was not right. He found that
I had the beginning of saddle sores on my rear..one for each side. This is
the first time in 8 years to be going thru this and I bet with it getting
hotter it is going to be hard to get this well. and I had excellent help while
I was in the hospital so I don' think it was their fault.

Plan to 'chip' Alzheimer's patients causes protest 19 May 2007
NewScientist.com news service Celeste BieverIT LOOKS deceptively familiar.
The patient rolls up his sleeve, the doctor sticks a needle into his arm,
and soon it's all over. But this is no routine vaccination. Instead, the
patient has been injected with a fleck of silicon that will uniquely
identify him when zapped with radio waves. Now, nearly three years after their
use was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration,
implantable radio frequency identification (RFID) chips are the focus of a
new controversy. The battle lines are being drawn in a quiet corner of West
Palm Beach, Florida. On 12 May, some 30 protesters held an inter-faith
prayer vigil (pictured above) outside Alzheimer's Community Care, a day-care
facility for people with dementia. At issue is the facility's plan to
implant 200 patients with microchips manufactured and donated by VeriChip of
nearby Delray Beach. When scanned, the chip reveals a unique ID number,
which when entered into a password-protected database gives access to medical
information about its owner. If the plan goes ahead, it will be the first
time the technology has been tried on a group of people with a specific
mental impairment. The forgetfulness that comes with Alzheimer's can make it
impossible for people with the condition to pass on vital information
when faced with a medical emergency, which is why advocates are keen to
make use of RFID chips with this group. If for whatever reason - an
automobile accident or hurricane - the person becomes separated from their
loved one, they are totally, totally helpless. They can't share what
medically is wrong with them, says Mary Barnes of Alzheimer's Community
Care. This could be a safety net.Privacy advocates say that it is
precisely this helplessness that makes the proposed use of the tags
unacceptable. This is a community that is not in a position to give fully
informed consent or to say no, says Katherine Albrecht of CASPIAN, an
Internet-based consumer rights organisation. The nature of the disease is that
they can't fully understand.Albrecht likens the violent and invasive
act of implanting a chip in someone who does not have the ability to
consent to the act of rape. Others agree with the
sentiment, if not the comparison. This is by definition a way of doing
something that denies a person control, says Lee Tien of the Electronic
Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. If that doesn't strike at the heart
of human dignity, I don't know what does. He and Albrecht would rather see a
chip implanted in a bracelet.Barnes says a bracelet would not be nearly
as useful. People might remove it if it got uncomfortable, especially those
with Alzheimer's, who might not understand why they should wear it.
Bracelets could also label people as mentally ill, whereas an implanted chip is
much less obvious, says Rick Rader of the Orange Grove Center in
Chattanooga, Tennessee. The centre, which cares for children with Down's
syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism, was in the media spotlight two years ago
when it considered using VeriChip's device in a similar study on its

Curious if any of you with pumps ever requested the morphine be taken out?
I did that this last Thursday and it was an unbelievably overwhelming and rough
weekend. They didn't 'actually' warm me of the withdrawal symptoms but having
been a patient this long common sense told me there would be some. I was on 1mg
for 24 hours, not a lot for most, but 88 pound body it apparently was! Anyway
the morphine wasn't doing anything but causing major tummy troubles so I wanted
to decease it.
Friday was fine. Friday night turned into hell. My legs were twitching
uncontrollably, not caring who or what they hit. There was excruciating leg
pain, as if my muscles were literally contracting more each second. Around 6 am
after being up almost 18 hours, I had my first sneeze attack, weird I know! 11
TIMES! I got out of bed and the legs quit twitching because of the pressure. I
was extremely weak, nauseated and sleepy. Nothing seemed to keep my mind busy
enough. So I went outside and the sneezing took over, 12, 15, sometimes 8 in a
row. Heart rate and blood pressure were elevated and no appetite at all. Now I
know why coke addicts are so thin! Every other sip was coming up. If I hadn't
had left over oral baclofen i may not have made it. Moods were up and down and
weird too!
Saturday night wasn't any better. My legs were even worse on jumping. I
was hot then cold, my nose was stopping up. Everyone thought I might end up in
the hospital as no one was getting sleep. I was up every 20 minutes until I
finally just let my legs jump until they stopped. Sometimes an hour would pass
and I would settle down and sleep.
Sunday morning didn't come fast enough! Those of you who know me KNOW i
don't get out of bed early and I was in my chair by 7:30am. So I laid in my
chair around the house, yard and anywhere there was someone awake! Around 11am
I laid down on the bed and my legs hardly moved! WOHOO! But after a fast 45
minute nap, I woke up with the worst headache Ive had since they put my halo on
in 98! Right back up, and it settled with Tylenol.
So I repeated Saturday on Sunday with a stopped up nose. Then bed time at
7, hopping from beds, hard one to soft one...my legs laid there and cramped but
no twitching. So it was peaceful. This morning I was awake at 6am again but in
chair by 830am. I'm really weak today, very alert and doing better. Plan on
giving my doctor's office three shades of hell on Wednesday!
So word to the wise, be well prepared if you go off morphine without
slowly decreasing it. Sorry to babble just want to warn anyone heading that way!

Just for an FYI. If you get disabled while your under the age of 18 (or is
it 21?), once a parent passes away, you can receive their Social Security. And
once both pass, you can switch to what ever one is higher.

I missed out on 4 years of SS, because I was never told about this after my
father passed. Not to mention all the cash spent on very costly insurance
premiums while I could have switched to Medicare. I just met a young lady who
did not know about this, so I told her to call SS. I had such a time trying to
get processed. I had to prove I was disabled before I was 18/21, written, non
copied records. But the hospital trashed its records every 10 years back then.
They put me through the wringer. I had so much proof, but nothing was good
enough. Finely I put up a goof fight and they ok'd it.

Also in most states, if you are on Medicare, you can switch to a Medicare
Replacement Policy. Lots better coverage than just Medicare.

Just thought I'd mention this incase there are new quads here who don't
know.

Greg

You're right Quadius. But Dave was right about one very important thing: there
is no ammendment guaranteeing the separation of church and state. The first
ammendment reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or
prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or
of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the government for a redress of grievances.
The only guarantee is that Congress (a body of legislators) shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise
thereof... Only the Supreme Court has defined this ammendment so narrowly
that it has lost the meaning given it by the founding fathers.

  Dave,

Unfortunately the biggest flaw I see with this particular, well-written entry
is that, in my opinion, there is no way that

Major Pierre Charles L'Enfant could have envisioned a cross being formed by
the White House, Capitol Building, Jefferson Memorial and Lincoln Memorial,
considering the latter two were built long after his original plan of 1791. In
case you're wondering, the Jefferson Memorial cornerstone was laid in 1939 and
the Lincoln Memorial was first proposed in 1867, long after L'Enfant's death.

worth a moment or two of your time. I was not aware of this historical
information.
On the aluminum cap, atop the Washington Monument in Washington, DC, are
displayed two words: Laus Deo. No one can see these words. In fact, most
visitors to the monument are totally unaware they are even there and for that
matter, probably couldn't care less.

Once you know Laus Deo's history, you will want to share this with
everyone you know. But these words have been there for many years; they are
555feet, 5.125 inches high, perched on top of the monument, facing skyward to
the Father of our nation, overlooking the 69 square miles which comprise the

So, what do those two words, in Latin, composed of just four syllables

God!

Though construction of this giant obelisk began in 1848, when James Polk
was President of the United States, it was not until 1888 that the monument was
inaugurated and opened to the public.

It took twenty five years to finally cap the memorial with a tribute to
the Father of our nation, Laus Deo ...Praise be to God!

From atop this magnificent granite and marble structure, visitors may
take in the beautiful panoramic view of the city with its division into four
major segments.

From that vantage point, one can also easily see the original plan of the

I just realized that my 6 mile trip was one way and then I had somebody pick
me up at the mall later in the evening. It is just too hot most of the year in
Florida to make that trip very often. However, when my chair was quite a bit
faster, I could make the trip in one hour. I figured my chair was driving over
7 mph since I was being held up by traffic, traffic lights, and some degraded
sidewalks. Now I'm probably be lucky if my chair does 5 1/2 mph. I guess I
can't complain about an 11-year-old chair still operating that well.
If only the new Peachtree system is as good as the old one, I would get a new
chair right away.

I decided to go on a long drive today, to see how far I could go.

They have a trail system though our city and neighboring cities they are
just fixing up. It used to be mostly a farming area in the desert, so it has
lots of canals. They paved a 10 foot wide path along 1 side for jogging, bikes,
etc. Dirt on the other side for horses. It starts by my house and I followed it
for 14 miles through 2 cities. I could have gone further, but it crossed over
railroad tracks. I might have been ok in going over them, but it was in a quiet
location and I did not want to get stuck. There was about a 3 inch gap between
the edge and the rails With a low drained battery, I did not want to risk it.
It s a fun trail, the canal is maybe 20 feet wide and has lots of fish in it.
Many kinds, the grass carp are 3 feet long. The trail connects a bunch of town
parks, so I took my time and checked out the parks as I went through. Though
some of the trail is just threw commercial development areas. After I was done,
I didn t want to risk the drive back, so I had called home to get picked up.
That s the furthest I ve ever driven, 15 miles by the time I was finished. My
chair has a mileage count on the LCD panel.

BlankI emailed every member of Congress last year after a bill from Rep.
Bingaman from New Mexico died when the 109th Congess adjourned. I'm not sure
if these 2 acted because of my letters, but this was just in the Medicare Watch
newletter. Write your congresspersons and urge them to support this bill.

HOUSE PROPOSED BILL TO REPEAL “IN THE HOME” RESTRICTION
New legislation proposed in the House of Representatives last week would lift a
restriction that prevents Medicare coverage of wheelchairs needed for mobility
outside the home.

Under the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services’ (CMS) current
interpretation of the Medicare statute, coverage of mobility devices for people
with disabilities is limited to those that are “reasonable and necessary” for
use inside the individual’s home. Disability and other advocacy groups,
including the Medicare Rights Center, have criticized the agency’s
interpretation as incorrect and discriminatory, since individuals need access
to mobility devices that are safe and effective for use outside the home.

The Medicare Independent Living Act (H.R. 1809) was introduced March 29 by
Representative Jim Langevin, Democrat of Rhode Island, and Representative Jim
Ramstad, Republican of Minnesota.

The bill would remove statutory language used by CMS to restrict coverage to
mobility devices needed in the home. The statute was originally intended to
define reimbursement guidelines for durable medical equipment; the devices fall
under Part B coverage instead of Part A since they are provided outside of a
hospital or skilled nursing facility. But, according to critics, Medicare’s
interpretation of the rule blocks access to mobility devices more suitable
outside individuals’ homes.

“This legislation will help ensure that individuals with disabilities have
access to appropriate mobility devices and, in turn, improved access to their
communities,” said Langevin, who is co-chair of the Bipartisan Disabilities
Caucus.

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get several feet

used for the water supply line to a refrigerator

They have the narrow tubing (1/4 O.D.) that

the wider tubing (1/2 O.D.) for those bevs

Many small towns base h/c parking allotment on need. (How many h/c persons per
capita) I would go to the city/toen council and express your frustration and
ask that they allot more spaces. One question, though: If they added a 2nd
space at that spot where your hair appointment was and both were legally
occupied, would you have still created your space at the end of the row?

  Hi all,
Yesterday my husband and I drove into Burger King and we were going to place
our order in the drive thru. When we got to the sign there was a man in a
wheelchair placing his order. When he got to the window they put his order in
the back pack on his chair. He then went on his way. When we got our order I
wanted to find him to see how far he was from home. He went about 3 blocks to
his apartment. He told me he did this with some of his bill paying. He said
so many places he went had safety glass and someone would have to come around
to help him and he found it easier just to go thru the drive thru . I wondered
what the difference was in paying thru a window slot on inside and outside but
it must be something I hadn't thought of.

Hi Dana,
Thank you for the good wish.
You said that Roserem did nothing for you, it is a mild sleeping pill. I
think the vicoden is 750mg, it is not that strong. I can't believe so many
people claim it's addicting. Everyone matabolizes medications differently. I
ordered my neck warmer from a Company in Missouri, I can't get the name of the
company until I have a CNA here. I was disappointed with the neck warmer
because it has gel inside. You can buy the same thing at Wal-Mart. It just
cools down after about 20-30 mins.

I tried roserum, and it did nothing for me. Not much seems to work

What kind of neck warmer do you have? How strong is vicoden? I always get

so cold..

Happy birthday! May you have many more healthy years.

   A Love That Inspires

   by Bobbie Humphreys

Imagine a kind of love that inspires spontaneous slow dancing. A
daily

routine interrupted by a Nat King Cole love song.

“…the greatest thing you'll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in
return”

A devoted husband helping his disabled wife of twenty four years, with her

sleeve that seems to be caught with in it’s self – inside out some people
call it.

In the middle of the day in the center of their living room they begin

dancing cheek to cheek, the embrace is important, not the missed steps of
paralyzed legs.

He whispers in her ear “I love you sweetie” then twirls with her empty

sleeve. He giggles when he finally notices a neighbor compelled to look in

their first floor apartment window at a man apparently dancing with a sleeve.

The husband graciously takes a bow and together they laugh at the
thought that the passer by cannot see his beautiful wife sitting in a
wheelchair with her heart on her sleeve.

old and still in better shape than my 4yld invacare TDX3. And they still get
parts for them! A little math says I could have had 1 permobile for 19,000 but
to save money I've had 4 in just the last 20 years, none of them as nice as a
permobile but average cost has been $13,500. Sooo, yea,,seems medicare may have
wasted a mere $35,000. I can't imagine why they are running out of money? If
that was a $35,000 bet I'd die in 5 years then I think it's time to tell them
to stop gambling away tax payer money.

Good luck getting your chair in a timely fashion. It it so tiring waiting
on something you need. How long did you have to wait between wheelchairs to
get a new one. I hope I can get a new one before she retires. My supplier
told me I could not get a new one until mine cost more to be repaired and a new
one and that could be forever with a permobile. I still have insurance to my
stepmom, but it seems like they are just as slow as Medicaid. My supplier told
me that insurance pretty much follows Medicare ruling. I have had mine for
years now. A lot of things are broken but not the price of the entire chair.
Has anybody ever heard of Medicare/Medicaid paying for a Permobile.Just
wondering.

My new chair got in today. Invacare TDX5, (tilt, recline, seat elevator,
electric leg rests). I had to go up and get in it so they could make any
adjustments to it. Only minor things, but they have to make some knee/thigh
pads to keep my knees from spreading. I sit fine in my old chair, but this one
has a center post leg rest, instead of individual leg rests. I like a center
post one better, but you do sit better if there are 2 leg rests. But when you
have individual electric leg rests, each leg rest must get plug into the chair.
So it’s a hassle getting them on and off. The center post can just lower and
tuck back under the chair. I can tell it is a bit faster than my TDX3, but so
much smoother to drive. I think I’m going to like the different back on it a
lot. Instead of a basic square padded back, this one has the top corners cut
off. So your shoulders have room to move around. It should be delivered within
the week. I never thought they would approve this chair with all the extras,
but they did… I hope I like it…

Re: [QUAD-L] New Chair

2007-02-01 Thread Bill_J
I got my last chair (an Invacare Ranger X) in 1999. I still had my legs then.
This chair messed up my back because my posture changed so much after both legs
were amputated above the knee.

Good luck getting your chair in a timely fashion. It isn't so tiring waiting
on something you need. How long did you have to wait between wheelchairs to
get a new one. My supplier told me I could not get a new one until mine cost
more to be repaired and a new one and that could be forever with a permobile.
I still have insurance to my stepmom, but it seems like they are just as slow
as Medicaid. My supplier told me that insurance pretty much follows Medicare
ruling. I have had mine for years now. A lot of things are broken but not the
price of the entire chair.

Here's the letter I sent to my federal legislators, CMS, The Sectretary of
Health Human Services, Bush, Cheney, Nancy Pelosi and many others in Nov,
2006.

  To Whom It May Concern:

I was recently made aware that Medicare will only provide powered wheelchairs
which suit the person’s needs inside his/her home. The phrase in the home
was never intended to be defined as inside the person's house. It was
originally intended to mean not in a hospital, extended care facility or other
health institution. It was the CMS that interpretted it so narrowly that it
has become their mantra when dissallowing power wheelchair requests.

I am a double amputee quadriplegic and use a powered wheelchair. To say that
this mandate appalls me is an understatement. Most powered wheelchairs that
are only suited for indoor use are next to useless outside of the home. Since
going outside at some times is a necessary activity, doing so in an
underpowered chair only suited for indoor use would be dangerous, it might end
up costing Medicare far more money due to accidents caused by unsafe use of
such wheelchairs. Not to mention possible lawsuits that would eventually be
filed. Then there are the thousands of jobs that could be lost because
wheelchair manufacturers and distributors would be put out of business,
resulting in lost tax revenue and higher unemployment expenses.

Does Medicare really want disabled people to stay inside all of the time?
Isn’t that discrimination against people with disabilities and, therefore, in
violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? Are we not allowed to
venture outside for doctor appointments (something required to remain living in
many cases), grocery shopping (another activity necessary to live), or just to
enjoy going outside for a social activity (a vital activity for our mental
health)? Are we to be condemned to a life inside our homes as if we were
hermits?

Back in the 1980’s, I was on several committees at my college that helped
write the ADA and was proud to have been asked to participate in drafting that
landmark legislation. I had no idea that in the future the federal government
would be the entity that violated that act. It is unconscionable that a
government agency that provides healthcare availability to the disabled would
attempt to so blatantly violate an act of Congress.

I’m requesting that this extreme restriction on the type of powered
wheelchairs we can obtain through Medicare be changed. Being disabled and on
Medicare should not mean we are relegated to being “out of sight, out of mind”
as it seems this agency (Medicare) desires. I am only 56 years old and am not
going to stay indoors the remainder of my life. This “wheelchair edict,” as I
call it, is far too limiting and needs to be changed. That change needs to be
made as soon as humanly possible.

In an effort to extend Medicare coverage to wheelchairs that can go outside
of the home, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) introduced the Medicare Independent
Living Act of 2006 (S. 3677). This legislation would eliminate the “in the
home” restriction of mobility devices for individuals with expected long-term
needs. S. 3677 was referred to the Senate Committee on Finance. Unfortunately,
due to time constraints and the large amount of legislation which came before
Congress, this legislation was unable to receive further consideration before
the end of the 109th Congress. Please see that Mr. Bingaman's proposed
legislation is reintroduced to the 110th Congress.

This is of utmost importance as it affects both the physical and mental
health of all persons needing powered wheelchairs. Please allow our doctors,
Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and wheelchair seating specialists
determine which wheelchairs best suit our needs as far as comfort, power,
safety and health are concerned. Don’t leave our ability to be mobile, safe
and comfortable in the hands of a Medicare or Medicaid bureaucrat. People with
disabilities struggle with many things. Don’t make them struggle to just move
around.

  Respectfully,
  William Jenkins

No sense in getting upset about new wheelchairs. We aren't allowed by
medicare to have a wheelchair that goes outside. If y'all get a chance to read
the new codes you may want to write some letters. It seems we must be taking
all the cool parking places.

They can't or are not suppose to. Most Psych's use PHD after their names,
instead of Doctor. But if you read the article, they purchased the signed
forms from a medical doctor that sold his name. The article only includes a
few doctors from the Houston Area. However CMS will find a lot more incidents
of Form Selling and money bribes. Most of the people involved have
international names or foreign backgrounds. I sure hope that the excess

In October 2006 Medicare changed their policies and will no longer allow
doctors and physical therapists to determine what type of powered wheelchairs
disabled people can get through them. The chairs they will purchase are NOT
suitable for outdoor use. Please read this letter and write a similar one to
your congresspersons.

  December 5, 2006

  To Whom It May Concern:

I was recently made aware that Medicare will only provide powered wheelchairs
which suit the person's needs inside his/her home. I am a double amputee
quadriplegic and use a powered wheelchair. To say that this mandate appalls me
is an understatement. Most powered wheelchairs that are only suited for indoor
use are next to useless outside of the home. Since going outside at some times
is a necessary activity, doing so in an underpowered chair only suited for
indoor use would be dangerous, it might end up costing Medicare far more money
due to accidents caused by unsafe use of such wheelchairs. Not to mention
possible lawsuits that would eventually be filed. Then there are the thousands
of jobs that could be lost because wheelchair manufacturers and distributors
would be put out of business, resulting in lost tax revenue and higher
unemployment expenses.

Does Medicare really want disabled people to stay inside all of the time?
Isn't that discrimination against people with disabilities and, therefore, in
violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? Are we not allowed to
venture outside for doctor appointments (something required to remain living in
many cases), grocery shopping (another activity necessary to live), or just to
enjoy going outside for a social activity (a vital activity for our mental
health)? Are we to be condemned to a life inside our homes as if we were
hermits?

Back in the 1980's, I was on several committees at my college that helped
write the ADA and was proud to have been asked to participate in drafting that
landmark legislation. I had no idea that in the future the federal government
would be the entity that violated that act. It is unconscionable that a
government agency that provides healthcare availability to the disabled would
attempt to so blatantly violate an act of Congress.

I'm requesting that this extreme restriction on the type of powered
wheelchairs we can obtain through Medicare be changed. Being disabled and on
Medicare should not mean we are relegated to being out of sight, out of mind
as it seems this agency (Medicare) desires. I am only 56 years old and am not
going to stay indoors the remainder of my life. This wheelchair edict, as I
call it, is far too limiting and needs to be changed. That change needs to be
made as soon as humanly possible.

Don't leave our ability to be mobile, safe
and comfortable in the hands of a Medicare or Medicaid bureaucrat. People with
disabilities struggle with many things. Don't make them struggle to just move
around.

  Respectfully,

  William Jenkins

Also, S.A.D. can be
effectively treated using full-spectrum lighting a few hours/day. Check
with a lighting store. Bulbs are not expensive and fixtures aren't
either.

Keeping the mind busy and active. Start a telephone group thru your
community or church or health center. You might even get paid for doing
this. Start developing a list of people who are shut-in and call them
once a day or twice a week and just make sure that they are ok. If you
don't get an answer, you have an emergency number to call.
This could develop into a major business if done right.

exercise. I need to get one of those hand cycle things, at least, if I
don't feel like going outside so much. Any other tricks you guys
have for for keeping spirits up during these dark months (besides drugs and
alcohol, which I know the effects of!)???
