I could  get out of there without any secondary complications, but I got
c-diff. Then everybody treated me like I had the plague..wearing gowns

everything to keep the nurses happy. Somehow i made it out of there and could

I wasnt sure how fast or if I would fully recover. I wouldnt say Im as good as

I fell pretty hard

Re: [QUAD-L] 1st Time Traveling

2013-10-28 Thread Monty
I have traveled many times through Chicago O'Hare and contacting special needs
services for that particular airlines is your first step. My experience has
been only with American Airlines and a wide variety of end results! When you
book your ticket it should have a place to indicate that you are disabled and
answered a few questions. Usually the airlines call me about a week before my
trip and will not accept my call before that time. Getting to the airport as
early as possible and no less than two hours before your flight. I have had
transportation issues in the past but luckily never miss a flight. They will
board you first and this is very important lesson at this point! I have a large
gym bag full of a week of clothing and necessary medical supplies. Normally
this bag would be a check-in but to save yourself the baggage fee this is what
you do. Depending upon how busy they are I either have them transfer me to the
aisle chair or a manual chair if the
other ones not available for some reason. Removing the seat cushion placement
to the side and I put it in my seat once I board the aircraft. Removing the leg
rest, head rest and the one arm rest that does not have my control panel on it.
Placing these items were the seat cushion was and placing the gym bag on top of
those to hold everything in place and to give some extra protection for the
chair. Now taking two ratchet straps in a crisscross pattern down to my tiedown
points on my chair or your lowest part of the mainframe. I have some some
commercial grade saran wrap to wrap up the chair allowing it to still manually
be pushed. You can also buy this saran wrap at your local home improvement
store or somewhere that has moving supplies. I got mine from work many years
ago and still using my original roll. Instructing the baggage handlers how to
disengage your motors and telling them which side is best to lay down on
because it will not fit otherwise in
the cargo hold of any domestic airliner. Have your cell phone ready  to take
some photos of your chair before the flight and after it's all bundled up. I've
had to file a few damage claims with them over broken items found on the chair
upon arrival. Any other questions or concerns feel free to ask. Also get an
estimate on the approximate weight of your chair they also want to know this.
Take care and enjoy your trip

Hi everyone,
I will be traveling for the first time as a quad in the end of November, (after
8 years post injury). And to make it even more exciting, I'm going to Cabo San
Lucas. I know!!! Pretty brave huh? Well not really because I live in Mexico and
I'm used to the inaccessibility. Of course I already know my way around here
where I live. Cabo is pretty much new to me, even though I've been there before
but not in a power wheelchair. I have my concerns but I think I'll be able to
manage.
What I am wondering right now is about the flying situation. I know they have
those special isle wheelchairs and that the staff at the airport help you
transfer and all that. But what about my power chair? I know they put it with
the luggage, but do they need to disassemble it? I sent a message to the
airline but I know they take a while to reply and I'm a bit anxious.
Any other traveling tips would be very much appreciated.

I remember reading something about a cushion that did that but I do not
remember
the name.  This was a number of years ago.  I remember we were talking
about the cushion that is like an alternating mattress but costs about
USD4000.  I cannot quite remember the name of it now.  I was thinking
about getting one when the power cord of my laptop got under my bottom and I
was
in bed for six months.

I think you can dance again but just in a different way.  It might
need to be on slow speed, with no rapid movements.  It takes so little to
cause skin break down.  It takes us so long to heal.

I still sleep
in a waterbed, which never causes any problems.  My brother built a frame
underneath so I can use my Hoyer to go under the bed, so I can get out of bed
and I use my sliding board to get in bed.  I have only had to replace the
mattress two times in 25 years.  It is so warm also.  If you have a
sore on one side, you can stay longer on the other side without hurting your
skin.

Does anyone else use a waterbed?

I am anxious to hear
everyone's stories about rehab coming home.
That was a great

I am considering surgery on my pressure wound on my butt. But that would
mean 4 to 6 weeks in bed absolutely not getting up. I'm not sure I could do
that. Right now I'm trying to stay in bed most of the time, only getting up
for a couple hours. My biggest concern is anxiety. It rarely happens, but if
I get really overheated or really constipated, I get A.D. Not only do I
sweat, headaches, claustrophobic, I get this really bad anxiety. Where I
just can't stop worrying about little things. It's only happens about once
or twice a year. If that even. Though it happened the other night. Actually
two times this week. I think being stuck in bed has helped cause it. I
started worrying about my pressure wound, and then I start worrying about
totally unrelated things. Then I start to worry about what if I start to
worry. What if a week after the surgery it happens again. When it happens
nothing seems to help unless I get up. Once I get over it I
think to myself how foolish it was to worry about that. The Dr. gave me
something for anxiety once, but by the time I needed it it had expired.

It may take two or three times longer to heal up, but I can get up for one
or two hours a day. Or do I just risk it, have the surgery, and hope I don't
have any issues.

My wound was on its way to being healed up when the cushion went flat, then
when I had my ostomy surgery it took twice as long as it was supposed to and
being on the surgery table caused the wound to be set back a little more.

It's hard to figure out what to do.

I would not go to Windows 8.1, to many uncertainties with Dragon and Windows

work out little bugs or issues between them. Also the 64 bit edition will allow

is 50% off.

I speak from experience of having a bone infection on my bottom! I had this old
bag of bones nurse that thought she knew everything and went months before
getting a wound clinic appointment. Discovering that I had a bone infection, a
round IV antibiotics started to turn it around and then failed. So after
researching myself on my activity level and trying everything else surgery was
the next option. It's absolutely necessary to take those six weeks after
surgery not get up for any amount of time! What kind of mattress are you
sleeping on? I have an alternating air overlay on my bed and no issue with skin
integrity for many years now. I have spent the last five weeks in bed because
of a broken leg and hoping to get liberated next week during my doctors
appointment. Are you going to a wound clinic on a regular basis? What kind of
treatments have they tried? I would make sure you don't have a bone infection
first and getting a second opinion is another
perfect option also. I had a bone infection in my arm just below the elbow and
that was nearly a four-year battle before leaving town and finding doctors that
knew what they were talking about two hours from me. Anxiety I've had a few
different times but for the most part it's not been an issue. Any other
questions feel free to ask.

I have used a military's type of poncho from the very beginning, the main thing
you want to do is to keep it from blowing up like over your head. I use a

[QUAD-L] post leg surgery update

2013-10-06 Thread Monty
well hello everyone,
for those individuals that did not know I had surgery done on my leg due to
both bones in the lower part of my leg just above the ankle. I forgot very
important piece of information just before surgery? I am a 3/4c complete and
had a tracheostomy for six months after my injury. Well during one of my
hospital stays because of pneumonia my primary physician warned me about scar
tissue still remaining in my throat and this is what I forgot to tell anybody
before surgery. Scared myself nearly half to death about an hour after
returning to my room, it felt like my throat was closing up! Thankfully I got
the word nurse out of my mouth before I started making this most unusual sound,
which meant I couldn't vocalize what was going on. With the great response of
medical personnel, including four doctors which one of them gave me a breathing
treatment reduces swelling in the back of my throat. Upon trying to insert a
breathing tube for surgery they encountered
that scar tissue and became inflamed afterwards. So my word of wisdom to have
these type of things written down and brought to the attention of those who
take care of us. The surgery went great now I have a metal rod or the correct
term a nail running down the middle of my one bone and some plates and screws
to accessorize it. Now to wait out the next two weeks to see what my surgeon
released me from my bed to some kind of activity?? If anybody has any other
questions feel free to ask take care my dear friends

I know it has been quite some time since I have posted anything and sense on
bed restriction due to a broken leg. Has anybody else had any experience with
21st-century products? Well last year I received my new chair, but the breath
control was a lot more sensitive than Invacare! After months of trying to
reprogram and to adjust it with no difference. My local people finally shipped
it off to the manufacturer on their dime and found some issues that they
resolve. Knowing that I'm a road warrior no matter the season in northern
Indiana. They threw on some lithium ion batteries that's supposed to have a
range of 30 miles? Yes that's right and as far as I know the only chair in my
area powered by these batteries over $2000 worth. So upon receiving this chair
back it was much better but far from perfect. Like with anything whether it's a
chair or some other form of technology whole load of luck and practice. After
finishing my routine at the local elementary
school as a volunteer and paid homework tutor after school for one hour. Just
needed to pick up a few things at my local dollar store and is not unusual to
be out most of the day without anybody with me. Upon turning onto a main isle I
caught my foot on the display shelf and never knew that my foot was in harms
way. About halfway through my heard the two bones break about 3 inches above
the ankle. At first I just thought I must've caught something on my armrest but
after asking the cashier the condition of my foot confirmed my suspicions. I
have broken my other leg a couple different times but nothing quite like this.
Being my independent self I just thought travel across town to get it x-rayed
and a sample boot type of support device. Boy was I wrong and somebody that
knew what was going on call 911 for me and took a trip in a ambulance. Placing
a temporary cast almost all the way to my knee and thinking the orthopedic
doctor would put a regular cast
after examining me the following day. He is wise thinking the temporary would
just do fine and not to worry?? Our personalities and his bedside manner was
absolutely horrible or horrifying. I went about after that appointment to get a
second opinion and have great difficulties finding a specialist willing to do
that. At first they told me my insurance Medicare and Medicaid would not cover
that opinion, well at least here in Indiana they do. On a follow-up appointment
the bones were all lined up and told me to remain on bed rest. Then three weeks
into this waiting game the bones shifted and he was not happy with my attitude
with him and vice versa. He gladly sent me to another doctor to deal with this
misalignment of bones. I will be having surgery was a nail and screws this
coming Thursday and hoping a couple weeks from now to at least get up in my
chair? Sorry this post is so long and will be celebrating my 20th anniversary
coming up in November 14.
Take care and you dear friend.

my recent travels from Indiana, southern Arizona just before the holiday
season.yes, I have traveled numerous times before this but flying out of
Chicago has always been a nightmare!taking a shuttle bus from South Bend to
Chicago in just over a two hour ride departing at 4 AM. So once in Chicago I
had about an hour and a half before the departing flight and it seemed going
through security was not too much of a hassle. Just after a few minutes of
waiting at the departing the gate, I was approached by the individual for
special needs. Now, in times past, they usually transferred me from my power
chair directly to the aisle chair for the aircraft but I had a different idea.
This time around. Straight from my power chair to a manual chair and then to
the aisle chair. , With following my directions of breaking down my chair and
securing a gym bag of my clothing on top of the wheelchair parts to make one
beautiful package to fit under the plane. Using two
ratchet straps and commercial grade saran wrap to ensure everything would stay
together even when they laid chair down on its side. Even with my chair broken
down, it barely fits in the cargo hole of the aircraft. Getting the bulkhead
seats are the first row of seats in coach section and on the right-hand side of
seating in the middle seat with my traveling companion taking the window seat.
Departing nearly on time, which was very rare than previous departures. I am
3/4c complete 6 feet tall and just over 200 pounds, so transferring me is not
the easiest. Once we touched down the chair was actually still all put together
the same way we packed it prior to flight. So getting to the airport with
enough time to spare is key in not getting a damage chair during flight and
this occurred also on the returning flight.  So anybody has any questions about
this travel fell free to ask and had an excellent time celebrating my grandpa's
90th birthday. I hope
everybody had a great holiday season and is ready for this new year. All is
well. Concerning my health really don't have any complaints at this time except
for my new chair. And it's been nearly a year now on getting my new chair
ordered and delivered. It's from 21st-century product and looks a lot more
durable than my current Invacare product! But for now programming it is the
next hurdle and hope to have it on the road in the near future. Will let you

Good morning everybody and have been meaning to write sooner but time seems to

It seems kind of weird because I was 19 when the car accident happened. For the
most part I feel like I'm on top of the world well at least for someone dealing
with spinal injury. Have been in the process these last few months on getting a
new chair from 21st-century products. Medicaid had no problem of approving it
with no denial except for the paint color which I have to pay out-of-pocket. I
have remained extremely active outside of my home on a daily basis of voluntary
and employment. About three months ago I moved into a much bigger place under
government subsidized apartments which offered me a three-bedroom unit versus
the shoebox sized one-bedroom I had before. Unfortunately without the property
management Not being up front with me about room dimensions,I had to take the
living room but my
live-in roommate now has a bedroom of her own. Next month I will be going on
vacation to celebrate my grandpa's 90th birthday down in Tucson. That is where
all my family is and I visit about every year  or so. Medically I really can't
complain about anything, with no skin issues that I'm having to deal with for
the moment. The morning temperatures here in northern Indiana the last week has
been down in the low 20s with daytime temperatures barely in the 40s. It is
always so much fun to get my body to adjust for these temperatures and I'm the
one choosing to say here in this cold climate. After being employed at target

sounds like a bone infection and have many of them over the years. A simple
blood test can tell if your blood count is off and also possibly taking of the
area itself. I spent over two years to convince my doctor about a bone
infection but did not listen to me! I located some doctors a couple hours away
and they quickly determined that I had a bad bone infection. No surgery on the
outside area is going to keep it closed, if there is infection in the bone. Any

Subject: [QUAD-L] Sore

It's a year now since I got my butt sore, well, just next to my tailbone. I
can't recall the exact numbers, something like 2.5 cn x .6 cn.
It was not too deep, but then tunneled towards 1 o'clock. It slowly healed
about half way in 8 month. Then within a week it just went back to the
beginning.
We pack it with Collagen AG. We tried a few different things, but nothing is
helping.
I assumed the sore was from sleeping on that side yet changing sides has not
helped.
Then we thought it had to be from the back of my chair. The padding was flat
and the bottom of the chair's back was real hard. I got a new pad and lowered
my cushion so the sore area now does not touch the back. There is now a 2 inch
gap between the top of the cushion and the bottom of the chair's back.

[QUAD-L] new wheels

2012-06-23 Thread Monty
I started back in January of this year on getting a new chair. Once the
paperwork was finished and sent off to  Medicaid to be quickly returned less
than a month later of being approved! I was almost in shock when they called me
and hopefully in the next week or so chair will be ordered.
http://wheelchairs.com/hframe_plus_page.html
very interesting subjects being spoken about on the list lately. I am 3/4
complete nearly 19 year post injury and love being outside! Living in northern
Indiana just not the temperature that affects life but also the amount of
moisture in the air! We have been over 90° great majority of our summer so far
and can tolerate it for many hours. It's not about our body changes but our
chairs that's wrapped around us so tightly! I am custom molded back on my chair
and can't imagine how much heat it keeps in?? All of my seating on my chair is
black so that only absorbs more heat from the sun! Knowing my chair while
enough, I love finding sprinklers to cool myself off.

I'm currently employed at target for the last 17 years and can't stand their
lack of respect for me. I have an associate degree for the last 11 years and I
don't even care about it. So I volunteer at a local elementary school during
the school year and some new as a volunteer opportunity is going through the
training to be a court appointed advocate for children.I'm about halfway
through the training so far and greatly  enjoying it. For any of those
individuals don't get out on a regular basis, it's greatly beneficial both
mentally and  physical. I sometimes leave my apartment for the majority of the
day nearly 10 hours or more. Even when I don't like going anywhere, but once I
get out I feel much better than if I would've stayed home. It's just not having
places to go but having others depend on us is definitely difficult because of
or disabilities. Just knowing that the principal at the school is expecting the
following day is a huge boost of
confidence. Besides I was at the grocery store and the person behind the
counter recognized  me and informed me he was a former student at school. He
was rather shocked to find out I was still  helping out at school and I told
him I have only been there for nearly 9 years.

Yes I have had my health issues over the years but my thought is life Rolls on!
Thanks for listening and take care

Re: [QUAD-L] Invacare Storm

2012-06-06 Thread Monty
Thank you for your post, I currently have a Invacare Ranger X that is a piece
of crap! And they are trying to get me approved for the brand that you
mentioned and we are waiting to hear from the insurance company?? This next
chair will be my fourth since my accident and they have only last me just over
five years each time. The unreliability of the electronics and other mechanical
pieces of this chair is costing the insurance company thousands of dollars just
to keep me on the road! Just the other day I covered over 20 miles on the road
just traveling around, just knowing this chair it's on its last leg. I
sometimes get rear tires three times a year and batteries at least once a year.
This current chair was just over $20,000 and now they are saying that the new
one could cost up to 50,000 that's why were waiting for the insurance company
response. I am unable to drive  my own vehicle, so my chair is my vehicle to
get me where I need to go! Yes I use
public transportation depending on the weather conditions and the time frame
to get to my destination. I am a very active individual I volunteer at a local
elementary school five days a week, work at target on Saturdays and have church
responsibilities on Sundays. So I have individuals relying on me to be there
and can't understand when I call because I'm in bed due to the chair being in
the repair shop again. I only have Medicaid and Medicare insurance so if they
deny me I already have vocational rehabilitation Waiting to see if they could
pick up some of the tab along with the real services. Another idea of mine is
contacting some local companies to sponsor my new chair much like NASCAR and
will drive around with their logo indicating their sponsorship? I live in
Indiana so I will keep you guys posted on what their reaction will be and will
not ever have another Invacare product again! Take care and have a great day.

I wish it was that easy, and in the past it was. Now you can have all
the OTs, PTs and the best doctors in the world but if Medicare or
Medicaid or your private insurance says they will not pay for a
stage 4
chair, you're not going to get one. How do they expect us to get out
of
the house unless we have a good reliable chair? Especially those of
us
who rely on Ventilators? My first chair was an Everest in Jennings.
It
was a piece of crap. But extremely simple. You could get most of the
parts you needed to fix it from RadioShack. After dealing with the
constant repairs of that chair. I got a really good one called
Century
21. I still use the same company today. Each chair last me at least
12
years. I'm sure I could go longer, but the electronics eventually go
out
of date. Unfortunately, the Century 21 is considered a high-end
chair.
That is to say it's very expensive -- $22,000. But it's worth every
penny, because I know it won't break down, and it will last me more
than
a decade. Would someone please give me an answer as to why insurance
companies will not pay for a good chair? Don't they realize that our
chair is our bodies? And how miserable we are when our chair is not
working? I see! They just don't give a damn.

I finally got my wheelchair. Wheel chairs are more comfortable than regular
chairs for me because they do not let my feet dangle. I'm on the shorter side
so I have that problem. This chair is better suited to me because it doesn't
put pressure on my tailbone which causes me a lot of problems. The bottom
that I sit on doesn't go all the way to the bad of the chair, it is about an
inch shorter and it makes such a difference. I'm not sure if they ordered it
that way because of how the doctor wrote the prescription or what, but I am
thankful for that. It is a Invacare Tracer and has a nylon type fabric seat
covers instead of the leather/leather like and so my back doesn't sweat. The
legs of my old chair used to have a weird bolt like appendage that would hit

That is way too long and have you ever been tested for a bone infection? I have
successfully conquered  two of them, one of them my bottom and the other one
just below my elbow. You need to see in infectious disease for this and if it
shows a negative result. Then get a second opinion from a second specialist
just to make sure. I had to travel two hours from my place just to find a
doctor that would listen to me. There's only two wound clinics in my area, so
after visiting the one two hours away was able to get everything done just
under six months. The one on my elbow was that one I had to travel for and
nearly had it for nearly 2 and half years. I had to do my own research on
locating these doctors because my primary physician would not listen to me! I'm
on Medicaid and Medicare so I had no out-of-pocket expense for these doctors
except for my time. So the best thing is to do your homework and don't take no
for an answer! Take care and good luck

Now that speed issue you just mention is quite an interesting one and never
heard of it before! Be forewarned Invacare electronics are nothing but garbage
and completely unreliable! I've had every black box on my chair replace 3 to 4
times and some of them even more than that. My last chair had some minor
problems as an Invacare product but six months after owning this chair it
mysteriously stalled out and had to be manually turned off and restarted which
I can't do! After hours with the technical support and regional representative
visiting me he never did figure it out even after I stalled out on the railroad
tracks with a freight train coming! Completely frustrated I switched repair
shops and they were able to install a switch so I could restarted myself. If
you are on the road as much as I am or out in the bad weather be prepared for
breakdown and inconvenience at the stupidest times. I have the Ranger X with
the main controller mounted on the front
of the frame only covered partially by their factory cover! Water kicked up by
the front wheels was wreaking havoc both the controller and the gearless
brushless motors. A passing car splashed water on me during a light rain storm
and killed my chair nearly 2 1/2 hours until it dried out. Finally somebody in
the repair shop added about six or 8 inches of sheet metal to the front cover
extending it back almost to the battery box. I still have to be careful was
slushy snow and heavy downpours but for the most part it's 100 times better
than the original. There are many other things that have gone wrong due to the
inferior quality of their product! I will also be getting a new chair this year
and have told my dealer no Invacare. I hope this helps in some degree. Monty of

At first I used a headset. This was difficult because it would be

headset kept me tethered to my computer. If I was in my room, sitting in
my wheelchair, and our family had company, I was stuck where I was.

About six months ago I got a shotgun microphone. This is a
directional microphone and it allows me to pull up to my computer and
operate it, without wearing a headset which is cabled to it. This works
pretty well. If I were to buy it again, I would buy a gooseneck stand for
the microphone so that I could position my mouth as close to the
microphone as possible.

My main problem relates to audio from the computer. For example, if I get
to a YouTube site, the audio from the computer is picked up by the
microphone and interferes with my control of the computer. Some websites
start talking to you... and this creates problems as well. If I am
planning on starting to any unknown sites, I try to remember to mute the
microphone (using control panel).

If you want any more information, let me know.

Take care,

Hello, my name is Monty and your situation sounds much like mine. I'm also due
for a chair this year through Medicaid but my medical difficulty is not skin
breakdown but scoliosisIn my back. The rehab specialist that I have already
spoken to is against the wall because I don't want anything to do with Invacare
anymore. I currently have a Ranger X with gearless brushless motors which I
have destroyed quite a few of them over the last four years. The electronics
boxes have all been replaced 3 to 4 times each if not more. My biggest problem
is the amount of miles that I travel in one day and this past summer I covered
20 miles in just over 10 hours. The tires are an absolute joke because
sometimes I go through three sets of tires a year. Medicaid thousands of
dollars in repairs and maintenance just to keep this thing on the road and now
with all the cutbacks it will be even harder for them the approved an adequate
chair for my needs. So what kind of
recommendation do I need from a doctor to justify an expensive chair for my
quality of life? I tried seeing a specialist for my back problem but that
appointment fell through. I live in the state of Indiana and any ideas would
greatly be appreciated. Thanks c3/417 years post

Hi Dan,

No question it is getting tougher getting a high-end chair through Medicare but
it can be done. I was accepted for a Permobile E-300 last month with full tilt
and recline due to a continuing breakdown of the right ishiam. Prior chairs
were standard Invecares that broke down constantly. My journey involved
establishing medical necessity through my MD, Plastic Surgeon and Wound Dr.
then a PT evaluation with the vendor present. All accepted Medicare, located in
Reno, NV. My out of pocket costs were a little over four thousand, my 20%
co-pay. Shop around, there's got to be a vendor and good PT for an eval in
Phoenix area I would think.

Good luck in your efforts,

It would be nice if it was that easy to access qualified therapists. 11
years ago when I got a new chair I had a team of excellent therapists fit
me to the chair. They made sure all the adaptations and adjustments were
made. However, things have drastically changed over the past 10 years.
Medicare who is my primary payer has cut back tremendously on what it
will cover. I'm trying to buy a new chair which is exactly the same make
and model of my previous chair which Medicare covered. This time Medicare
will not pay for it as it is now considered a high end chair. A high-end
chair is one that is built well enough to use inside as well as outside
without breaking down. Not only do they not cover the chair, but my
excellent staff that fitted me to my last chair the longer accepts
Medicare because they have reduced their reimbursement to such an extent.
So, what's a person to do? Dan

Greetings
Glen,
I would ask that you consider a seating and positioning evaluation to
correct the seat and position issues. Occupational Therapist with
certification in Positioning are used with Techs to achieve the best
position. Sometimes its the seat.  With others its the upper AB
supports. Poorly fitted equipment and accessories can cause damage to
your injury with rubbing and skin breakdown too.
Some posture can be controlled but not cured, depending on various needs

Most modern vehicle security systems will have a variety of accessory options
and all of this convenience is all-in-one remote! You have to have someone to
put some relays to connect into the van system to the alarm. A pretty decent
remote start and six outputs and would most likely be $300-$400 depending upon
what kind of shop labor rates are? If you do research of finding your own
system and relays you will save money that way! Most custom audio shops are the
best for this kind of work and what ever you do do not go somewhere like Best

vehicles so anymore ideas feel free to ask.

2011-04-10 Thread Monty
I often wondered the same thing.I haven't said anything in quite some time, but
stand in need of some advice regarding back spasms! I am now 17 1/2 years post
3/4c complete and the last three months with no relief. I'm very active and out
a good 10 hours most days. Even when the snow is flying, I was in my chair on
my computer so I'm not understanding what may have brought this on?? I started
the paperwork five months ago for a new chair and still waiting for the
financial part of it to come through. I have a Ranger x with TiltSeating, a
custom molded back but one thing that really has changed over the last two
years is my belly! I do range of motion sometimes twice a day on my arms and my
legs once a day with 20 repetitions for the three exercises I have for them.
Nothing has changed with my medications and taking baclofen three times a dayBy
mouth just about the highest dose which can take. Now with summer almost here,
here is a great alternative to
 the hotel chains.
http://www.airbnb.com/
Originally was thinking of staying in an extended stay, because I had little
Luck On locating Any timeshare property companies that offered anything without
a huge commitment. So after waiting to save the money for this trip something
told me to look one more place that would be craigslist and sure enough I found
another half dozen of possibilities that was quite competitive with the hotel
chains. So after narrowing down the possibilities to the one that is closest to
my family, finding a townhouse by an elderly lady who has passed away. So her
daughter is selling the property and the way real estate market is I don't
expect the property to be sold before my trip. So this townhouse is two
bedrooms and fully furnished for $50 less than I was going to pay The hotel .
Now I will be Able to invite my family over to hang out with me instead of
worrying about their inaccessible houses. Originally there was a 14 day minimum
stay and after contacting the person
she will allow me to use it for 10 days if it doesn't sell before then. So I
guess doing your homework more than once truly does pay off and was quite
surprised that craigslist had so many different options that did not come in my
search engine results! Like anything on the web make sure you check out how
legitimate the offerings are and be cautious with any of your personal
information.

So any ideas would greatly be appreciated.
Take care and have a great day from Monty of Indiana

I am finished with Invacare because that's what I've had the last 17 years!

and not the off-road version either it is too wide.
http://wheelchairs.com/hframe_plus_page.html
with my Invacare Ranger X I just spent 16 days in bed because I burned up both
motors because the main controller did not release the brake! They also had to
replace that controller and then Invacare technician couldn't tell the local
shop how to program my chair like it was previously set up is by a 20 year
veteran?? After my local shop returned to my house again to figure this thing
out and get a different technician on the phone that knew exactly where there
was a hidden setting thank you Invacare for your inconsistency. While I had so
much time on my hands I wrote a nice little letter to the CEO of Invacare with
no results yet. I'm tired of missing out on things I had planned and never
knowing when it may break down again! I use a sip and puff controller for my

I am thinking of going with the Invacare FDX as my next chair. Have tried the
demo out twice. It's either that or another Permobil.

What's really annoying is that when engaging or releasing the joystick on the
Invacare FDX joystickit is LOUD which indicates a good deal of play in the
gears of the gearbox. This is further observed by the jerkiness of the
response of the joystick to the actual chair movement.. This can't be good for
the gearbox and leads to breakdown much more frequently.

I know someone here mentioned their LOUD joystick on their chair (forget the
person and chair they have). It's loud enough to be a real annoyance. Anyone
know if Invacare can adjust that?

Also... when switching speeds (from 1-4) it makes 3 LOUD beeps every time.
That is annoying alone let alne in public with people maybe wondering who's
beeping at them or something. Is this adjustable too? Any of you have that
exerience as well?

Permobils, Quantums, etc don't dramatically announce to the world when you're
moving or switching speeds so.

I have a friend who is a quadriplegic C5-6, and during the past six months
he has been in the hospital five times. I don't know all the facts, I will
try to determine more information, but one symptom is low blood pressure.
The idiots in the hospital take urine cultures and tell him that he has a
bladder infection. Duh!

Last Sunday he started a gurgling sound, eyes rolled back in his head and
appears to have a seizure. The ambulance was called and his heart stopped
twice, but was restarted. The only thing that is abnormal is the fact that
his body is not processing sodium and they must give him intravenous
sodium.

The heart doctor says he has no problem, the kidney doctor says that his
kidneys look good, in my opinion they're all a bunch of idiots.

a couple meals. My George Foreman grill is an absolutely wonder, taking meet
straight out of the freezer into the microwave for one minute on high to
defrost
and about 10 minutes on the grill. One package of Ramen noodles and one can of
condensed vegetable soup with about a cup of water five or six minutes in the
microwave something simple and easy. Take advantage of an a caregiver who knows
how to cook to have leftovers to cover a couple days or so.

I used to flush my catheter once a week and now about every two. with a acid
solution of 120 mL held in the bladder for about 10 minutes. Old-school
urologists taught me this many years ago.

I have several different caregivers who come during the week, and I have been
getting kind of bored with microwave dinners.

On the other hand, my wife does not want caregivers rummaging through her
kitchen to prepare complex meals (and sometimes leave a mess).

Do you have any favorite recipes which are easy for caregivers to prepare?

Here's my favorite easy recipe: lots of us drink cranberry juice to try to help
us avoid urinary tract infections. Lately I have been asking my caregivers to
heat up my cranberry juice in the microwave. It's nice to have something warm
to
drink on a cool day, and it tastes surprisingly good.

First thing to consider zoning for your community! Weather conditions, cost of

Hi everyone,

I need to install a new ramp, it can be temporary or permanent.  I'm
trying to decide between Cement, Wood or deck type material or Expanded
metal.

I was thinking snow and rain would fall through the expanded metal so it
wouldn't require as much snow shoveling as the others.  But would it have
good traction when covered with frost, fresh snow or wet from rain?

I have a cement ramp and it doesn't seem to have any issues unless the
snow builds up and gets packed down before it gets shoveled off.  I would
think a wood or decking material would be similar to the cement.

Any ideas or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Subject: [QUAD-L] Flat free tires, Front/Mid/Rear wheel drive

I have used flat free tires on two different Invacare Storm, Rear Wheel
Drive Wheelchairs for over 15 years.  During evaluation for both chairs I
could not tell any noticeable ride difference between the flat free tires
and the tires with air.  Something like that usually happens when you're
in a hurry to get someplace or already late for something.

If I have flat tires that makes one more thing I have to depend on someone
else to do and don't we all want to be more independant.

During my last Wheelchair evaluation I thought the mid Wheel drive
Wheelchairs had a much rougher ride than the Rear or Front Wheel drive
Wheelchairs.  Plus I heard from many mid wheel drive wheelchair users that
if you wanted to go on the grass, dirt or gravel you didn't want a mid
Wheel drive Wheelchair.  If you have a lockdown for driving it makes them
even worse they said.  I was told Invacare was even switching some mid
Wheel drive to Rear Wheel drive for several people because of problems
with ground Clearance they had after getting home with the mid Wheel drive
Wheelchairs.

I can see in some cases where mid/front Wheel drive would be better but in
my house and van the Rear wheel drive works better and the others don't
work very good.  I know because I have tried both.

Just my 2¢

My solution was to stop using Firefox and use Google's Chrome browser

The only downside was that the Firebug debugger I use during website/webapp

Fw: [QUAD-L] more about wireless microphones

2010-09-18 Thread Monty
first of all which operating system are you running under? Just a couple days
ago I had some similar problems, but it is due to Windows updates under 7. I

Subject: [QUAD-L] more about wireless microphones

In an earlier e-mail, I talked a bit about my frustrations about being
hardwired
to my computer.

Here's another issue: if I try to watch a YouTube video, or if I accidentally
visit a website with audio, Dragon NaturallySpeaking tries to interpret the
words spoken by the website. Sometimes (particularly if the words are spoken
rapidly) my computer seems to use all its resources trying to interpret the
spoken words, and so Dragon NaturallySpeaking becomes nonresponsive.

I have addressed this by turning the speaker volume way down, and this helps...
but I find it best to mute the computer speakers. But this makes it very
cumbersome to, say, answer a phone call via Skype. (Skype is great for making
outbound calls, by the way...)

I would very much like to be able to watch video podcasts and YouTube videos
and
so forth and retain control of my computer using Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I
would like to be able to participate in webinars, and in conference calls using
Skype.

I plan to research directional microphones. It may be possible to position a
directional microphone so that it can pick up my voice from several feet away
with minimal interference from the computer speakers and the telephone and
visitors...

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks, and take care,

Pressure Sores, are a separate practice of medicine. Most doctors and
hospital will outsource their patients to a Wound Clinic with skin specialist.

Most Wound Clinics are not in hospital, but rather next to them or a separate

location. Some may be in hospitals, but not part of the hospital. Thatis
why wound therapy is so different in the medical practice. Similar to

my setup is very simple it consists of a moped battery located under my city
for
just under $50, this cigarette outlet with wires about $7 and a charger from
Harbor freight for just under $10! Doesn't that sound a lot cheaper?

the funniest thing about my setup the airlines didn't even know it was there!

I wanted to get a cigarette lighter outlet on my chair. I called all the chair
repair shops around, but no one will do it. I saw one that said it plugged into
a wheelchair's charging outlet on a joystick controller, but did not mention
what chairs are compatible. $200, a bit high. But my chair will not work if the
charger is plugged in.

Pressure Sores, are a separate practice of medicine. Most doctors and hospital
will outsource their patients to a Wound Clinic with skin specialist. Most
Wound Clinics are not in hospital, but rather next to them or a separate
location. Some may be in hospitals, but not part of the hospital. That is why
wound therapy is so different in the medical practice. Similar to
nutritionist,

Having said all that, if you don't see some drasticimprovement in the

Re: [QUAD-L] flying back east

2010-09-04 Thread Monty
whichever airlines you have chosen contact their special service department is
the first step. Ask for the bulkhead seats or in other words the very first row
of coach and depending upon the airplane one side should have three seats which
is best for having room to transfer! I have flown five times and have learned
something every single time! The ventilator part is going to be the tricky one
because you are transferred from your chair to what is called an aisle chair
which is only about 18 inches wide before you get on the plane. Also ask their
maximum dimensions for their cargo whole my wheelchair even after being broken
down has to go in on its side. Now for you and them not to lose legrests
armrests or even a headrest if you would go to a place like U-Haul or a good
home improvement store they sell an industrial Saran wrap for shipping items.
It's about 20 inch long roll with handles on it you put all of the loose
wheelchair parts where the cushion was removed where you sit. Going around the
chair with that wrap to hold everything in and make sure to indicate which side
of the chair it can be laid on its side which I learned this last time. I use
my
chair cushion from my chair in the airline seat and that also save $25 instead
of checking luggage in at the ticket counter high just wrapped it up with my
wheelchair. Also you will need to show them how to put the chair in manual mode
so they can push it without killing themselves. Have your local wheelchair shop
inspect your chair to make sure everything is in good shape and also you have
gel cell batteries or the wheelchair cannot fly by federal regulation! Before
they transfer you and after you wrap it up you may need these later on to prove
to them of any damage while the chair is in their care. You also need to locate
a local wheelchair repair shop where you are going as backup, after reaching my
destination my wheelchair would not power up after countless calls on my part
and on their side we finally found somebody 90 minutes later. The airlines had
to transport me across the town and only took over five hours since my landing
to finally get me up and running! They had to pay everything and gave me free
tickets to fly again within one year. Any other particular questions feel free
to ask.

I'm a new participant in the forum from Olney, Maryland. I was injured in an
accident at the beach about three years ago, and I'm now a C4/C5 quadriplegic.

It sure is nice to find a forum dedicated to quadriplegics. I can imagine that
being a paraplegic is a devastating and life-changing injury, but it seems to
me
that quadriplegics face problems of an entirely different magnitude.

I have two primary areas of interest:

Support for Dragon NaturallySpeaking. I am currently using Dragon
NaturallySpeaking 10, and it works pretty well for most things, but I have
questions from time to time. For example, does anyone know how to copy a block
of information from a website and paste it into a document using Dragon voice
commands?

Quality of life issues. So many of the organizations which help those with
spinal cord injuries seem to focus on basic health needs and research and
things
like that. I am considering starting an organization which would focus on
quality-of-life issues only. It is nice to stay alive... but it might be nice
to
have some fun too. Are you aware of any organizations which focus on
quality-of-life issues for quadriplegics and their families? If I were to start
such an organization, would that be of interest to you?

Thank you, and take care,

Subject: [QUAD-L] Quad Belly

My quad belly seems to be growing no matter what I do. It looks like if you
poked me I would pop.
I'm not over weight, fairly skinny arms and legs. I've been working out and
watching what I eat.
I feel like I'm pushing my stomach out trying to make myself look pregnant.
But my belly is getting uncomfortable, when I try to bend forward, etc.
I wish those Ab Belts that shock your muscles to tighten would work, but I
heard they don't.
It would be great if a doc could just go in there and tie every thing back up.
I feel like all my inside stuff is lowering out of place.
Even my abdomen binder does not help hold things in place.

water or due to other illness. One thing I have not heard discussed before is
getting your catheter flushed out on a regular basis now to my old school

keeping active mentally it's also very essential and after my workplace only
employees me one day a week I had to find something else to fill my time!that
is why I volunteer at an elementary school five days a week and since
physically exercise an option but just cruising through the neighborhood or
wherever will make you feel much better no matter the season! 16 years post

I distinctly remember being tired and COLD the first 5 to 10 years. I don't
really think diet is the only issue. Although, do not expect to eat as much as
you did prior to your injury. If you do, be prepared for a tractor-tire around
your mid-section. I remember my Dr.'s saying that my body was still adjusting
to being in a sitting position all day. That the brain is not used to being at
a physical state-of-rest 24/7. (exercise greatly helps) Are you cold a lot?
I know that if I am in a room below 78 for too long, them it takes a looong
time to get back to feeling warmly comfortable again. I remember many many
hours basking in direct sunlight the first many years post injury.

Sorry, no magic potions in this world. You'll find each of us here had to
discover our own rituals. Fun part is that while no one here has the same
rituals, none contain unique parts. So, listen and try things you hear here.
Stick with what works for you.

Thank you for responding to my initial post, it feels encouraging to
know I'm not the only one out here (even though I feel like it). Is it
common to chronically feel tired, I don't eat right I know that does
not help - it's dinner time I've had a bananna, a coke a handful of
popcorn. I'm also trying as of today to wean myself from fentanyl
patches (not happy so far). Anyway, does anyone find any vitamins,
shakes, protein bars, etc. to be helpful? I'm looking for a magic

I am planning to visit my family in Tucson Arizona the first week in June and
currently live in Indiana. I have lost track of the number of e-mails and phone
calls in regards to finding some personal care during a visit! After a e-mail
campaign this morning, one of the agencies informed me of a huge stumbling
block in regards to hiring any agency in the state of Arizona without a local
physician of the state no care can take place! I was already planning to pay
out of pocket for the care, but without my family stepping up to the plate and
no volunteers to speak of either?? Churches or nonprofit organization and even
nursing schools have come up with nothing. I'm not respiratory dependent or
critically ill, just a simple bed Bath and a suppository every other night. My
next plan of attack is craigslist or finding a hooker on the street corner
without the bureaucracy? Knowing my luck I would pick up a undercover officer
and then the jail would have to
worry about my care. I'm only talking a one-week visit and my family are just
idiots for not helping out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated especially
those individuals based in Tucson. Thanks

2010-03-10 Thread Monty
I am 16 1/2 years post injury at 3/4 complete and take baclofen three times a
day with pretty decent results! Another part of spasms is the lack of range of
motion and I do range of motions almost everyday and sometimes twice. Being 6
foot tall personal-care would be almost impossible without it and to keep
myself in my chair without finding somebody all of the time to put it back up a
limb or two. I have gone a few days without them and then takes another 3 to 4
days to get my muscles to relax once again. I think changing positions either
in bed or the chair can assist in cutting down the number of spasms. I have a
tilt system on my chair and alternating air mattress on my bed. This is what
works for me and like always we are all different in many little ways! Your

[QUAD-L] Road warrior!

2010-03-04 Thread Monty
I am somewhat of a dilemma on deciding in regards to my new power chair late
this year. I am currently in my third Invacare power chair rearwheel drive with
gearless brushless motors. Living in northern Indiana with the wildest weather
extremes and will not take a little snow caused me to stay home unless it's to
deep. My last chair before this one electronics seem to be bulletproof,
accepting bone jarring miles of travel sometimes over 10 miles in a single day!
Six months in the ownership I started experiencing mysterious electronic
problems which manufacture still hasn't figured out in the last four years.the
chair would just stall and had to be manually turned off and turned back on by
somebody else other than myself. After countless calls to my service center and
the manufacturer resulting in no definitive answers! This situation truly got
scary one time while crossing some railroad tracks and it stalled out just
about the time the crossing arms were
coming down. Looking over my shoulder with a westbound train only blocks away,
heaven help me there was a state trooper who was just behind me to get me
rolling again! Every piece of electronic box or parts have been replaced more
than one time without solving the problem. After changing my service center
they were able to wire in a non-Invacare reset switch so I can power my chair
on an off without any assistance. I am 3/4c level injury and extremely active
outside of my four walls. I volunteer at an elementary school five days a week
and have a paying job at target on Saturdays. So having a dependable and
reliable chair is absolutely key to my lifestyle. I have lost count on how many
days that I have spent in bed because of this hunk of junk chair and will never
own another Invacare chair again. Having the combination of long-distance
travel and excessive amount of torque when necessary to climb over unknown
obstacles. Potholes in this community are
everybody's springtime favorite, besides those old famous cobblestone road
that still exist out there. I have a sip and puff control, with the tilt system
that seems to be a good combination for my 6 foot 175 pound body. Right now I'm
going through another redesign on my leg rest still not strong enough to resist
all of those things I seem to be bouncing off. Having about 10 hours or so up
in my chair on a daily basis helps to keep me healthy both mentally and
physically. Yes I've had issues with breakdown a time or two but that's just
part of being disabled. Even with my worse cases of pneumonia getting up in the
chair helped to speed up my recovery time. I don't mind taking extra medication
to help out fighting against those sickly little bugs and absolutely swear by
taking zinc once a day. Haven't a single day of school because of and think
that says something? Sorry this post is so long but just been watching for the
last few days of everybody's
concerns and issues. Take care my dear friends

well don't feel bad, I just got booted by my agency because I offended 40 some

was a complete nightmare anyway and you can never tell when I had coverage or
not! I just happen to hear a name of an agency by word-of-mouth and now have
them. It seems their office management is much better and time will only tell
how the aides will work out. You signed up with real services or any other
state agencies would contact your case manager if you have one. Thank goodness
I have a live-in roommate and another good friend for backup. Has anybody ever
heard a public partnership program? It's a state-funded program at least in
Indiana to pay individuals i.e. family or friends to assist you in non-skilled
care. I have been with this program for nearly a year and is absolutely
wonderful especially since I don't have that out-of-pocket expenditure. Good
luck with your replacement search. My

Hey there guys, I finally managed to get version 10 of NaturallySpeaking. I
have been using the professional for a long time, but decided to go with the
preferred since I use my mouse stick in combination with my trackball for a lot
of my maneuvering around the screen. I have been very satisfied with it so far.
Others may not notice it, but I have seen a significant increase in the
inaccuracy over 9.5.

The only training I did was reading the Kennedy inauguration
speech and then I let the software check my documents. I just started dictating
after that and it's been much more accurate than all of my other versions of
this stage of the game.
