[qubes-users] draw.io desktop running from a template

2021-04-28 Thread 'cubit' via qubes-users
This is a bit of a long shot but is there anyone using draw.io / diagrams.net
via the desktop app installed in a template.

I've got it installed in a debian template but when you launch it from an appVM
it does not see any of the available templates.

would love to hear others experience

I have the same persistent notification due to pulseaudio updates.   Do you
recall  what packages it said it will remove when you run with --best
--allowerasing.

I am told it will remove

Removing dependent packages:
- pulseaudio-qubes
- qubes-vm-recommended

Which at least the second one sounds important for qubes operation  so feeling
a bit cautious

[qubes-users] AppVM colors not matching what is set

2020-09-01 Thread 'cubit' via qubes-users
Hi Qubers

I  has a an odd problem with AppVM colors.   One particular AppVM, lets call it
"personal" as that's what it is called :)   is set to green in qubes manager
but all window decorations are showing as gray, except for the top level
"personal" menu item in the xfce menu which shows the correct green,  all the
applications under it are gray though

Is there any way to force a reset of an AppVM color so that the programs run in
it inherit the color?

I've tried doing it through the Qubes Manager and changing to a different
color,  sometimes rebooting, sometimes not  but it never changes.

Running Qubes 4.0.3

Make sure the allocated space for the AppVM is large enough.  By default an
AppVM get created with 2GB of user space.

Open Qubes Manager,   open the settings for the AppVM and increase "Private
storage Max size" as needed.

[qubes-users] USB headset, how to control volume?

2020-07-16 Thread 'cubit' via qubes-users
Hello.

I have a logitec USB headset which is plugged into the laptop and then
connected to my "chat" AppVM.

The audio and mic work in so much that I can hear and be heard. I can not
however figure out how to control the sound level.

At the moment it's so loud I can not leave the headphones on my ears.

I've trued the in-line volume control,  the dom0 pulseaudio volume control,
Manager and Preferences but can not change the level

Is there any way to control the sound level once it is passed to an AppVM?
It would also be nice to control my mic levels but so far people have not
complained about me being too quiet so not as pressing.

[qubes-users] no DNS resolving being passed to sys-firewall or other appVMs after updates?

2019-06-26 Thread cubit
I am not sure if this is related to recent updates but after updating today and
doing a reboot, my sys-firewall and other appVMs are not getting DNS resolving
working.

- sys-net (fedora30) starts up with out an issue, can resolve and connect to
the internet
- sys-firewall starts up and gets an IP address,  it can ping sys-net and hosts
on the internet by IP but can not by name.
- appVMs are the same as sys-firewall

on sys-firewall and appVMs I have two entries in /etc/resolv.conf 10.139.1.1
and .2   I am not sure what these IPs are as they do not show up in qubes
manager and I can not ping them.

IPs all start at 10.139.0.5 which is sys-net

The only way I can get to the internet is to use Tor or VPN which don't rely on
the system DNS.

Is anyone else experiencing this,  does anyone know what 1.1 and 1.2 hosts are
or how I can get DNS up and running again?

[qubes-users] Touchpad scroll speed under 4.0.1

2019-03-20 Thread cubit
Hello Qubes-users

I'm running an x230 with 4.0.1 and am trying to figure out how I can make the
two finger scroll gesture on the touchpad more responsive

Under 3.2 this worked very well and scrolling was responsive,  so much you
could "flick" a page and it'd scroll for a little on its own.  Since updating
to 4.0.1 the responsiveness of two finger scroll gesture on the x230 has become
very slow where a full swipe of the touchpad will scroll about a 12th of the
screen at a time.  USB mouse works perfectly

Does anyone experience the same thing or have suggestion on how to make it more
friendly?

[qubes-users] QUBES_GPG_AUTOACCEPT not being honored in 4.0

Following a move from Qubes 3.2  to 4.0.1 I am struggling to get the split key
gpg to honor QUBES_GPG_AUTOACCEPT any more

The rest of the split key functionality works as expected but it's very
frustrating the have QUBES_GPG_AUTOACCEPT default to 300 despite having been
manually changed to 86400

Relevant config riles.   I hope I did not forget to include any important.

export QUBES_GPG_AUTOACCEPT=86400

gpg-split-domain in work

user@work:~$ more /rw/config/gpg-split-domain

qubes.Gpg in dom0

[user@dom0 ~]$ more /etc/qubes-rpc/policy/qubes.Gpg
work  vault  allow
$anyvm  $anyvm  ask

[qubes-users] "Qubes Update" tool - can you ignore a template

2019-02-25 Thread cubit
In the Qubes Update tool under 4.x,  is it possible to set a template to be
ignored for update checking?

The reason for this is I like to keep the default installed "fedora-29"
template unused and work off a clone  "fedora live" and in a worst case
scenario I can use the "fedora-29" taplate to make new clones if that latter
breaks or I want a template with out all the software I installed in "fedora
live"

The problem with this, as I never update "fedora-29" it always has updates
available

is it just a case of running that and rm'ing the appvm directory to remove a

I had this exact problem when I did my first install of whonix-14.
/var/lib/tor and all sub filders and files were owned by user "pulse".   I did
chown them to be owned by "debian-tor" but with other time related problems I
just delete the whonix-14 templates and re-installed them.   Second time they
worked fine despite doing nothing different.

Thank you Unman,  this is on Qubes 3.2 maybe working differently

I have entries in the "suggested" list which includes old AppVM that no longer
exist and even incomplete entries where I was too quick to hit return to send a
file.  Example  I have "vaul"  (no such appvm ever exist) and "vault" (does
exist appvm)

I think I was not too clear.   In the file browsers (nautilus) there is a right
click context menu option to copy or move a file to another appvm.  I am trying
to find how to clear these dialog boxes of the appvm names that are saved in
them.

Here is some type of  answer if anyone else runs into this problem, I did not
manage to fix this but did work around it.

 - I created a brand new vault VM based on Debian 9,

- exported all my keys from old vault

- imported into new vault

- updated work VM to call new vault

everything works again.

I guess I'll never know why simply changing my original vault VM template from
Debian 8 to 9 did not work.

Qubes 3.2 with all templates and dom0 updated as of today.   Yes I get pop up
asking do I want to give access to keys for the time period defined by
QUBES_GPG_AUTOACCEPT in .bash_profile in work qube (if vault qube is not
running it will be started).  I say yes to this and it just errors with

"Error - no matching private/secret key found to decrypt message; click on
details button for more information"

Clicking on the details button in thunderbird, shows that the message is
encrypted to my key

gpg key is a master / sub key set up with the master private key offline if
that makes any difference.

I had:

work qube as debian 8, changed template used to debian 9 and works ok.

vault qube as debian 8 but when I try change the template to debian 9, work
template can no longer find private keys.    The work quebe will start the
vault qube when encrypted email is looked at so it appears they are talking ok.

- In work qube I am using Thunderbird + enigmail

- enigmail is configured to use "/usr/bin/qubes-gpg-client-wrapper"

- in work qube terminal  "qubes-gpg-client -k" returns all my keys

The only thing changing is the template for vault qube.

[qubes-users] split gpg failing after moving appvm from debian 8 to debian 9

2018-01-19 Thread cubit
Hello qubes-users

I am migrating all my AppVM from Debian 8 template to Debian 9 template  but I
am running into little problem with split GPG.

Split GPG has been working on my computer okay with Debian 8 and two appVM;
"work" which has thunderbird and enigmail and "vault" which has my gpg keys.

The issue seems to be if I set the vault to Debian 9,  my work appVM complains
that it can not find my private key.  Even though if I run "qubes-gpg-client
-K" on the work appVM it shows my keys.  Looking at an encrypted email when
"vault" appVM is not running will force it to be started.   The problem exists
if even I set work appVM to d8 or d9. Work VM with Debian9  and vault VM
with debian 8 works okay.

I have gone over https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/split-gpg to make sure everything
is set up correctly after template change and at each step it is.

Can anyone know how to fix this?

[qubes-users] R3.2 Fedora 26 template update issues

2017-12-05 Thread cubit
Hello, I am using the offical Fedora 26 template
(qubes-template-fedora-26-4.0.0-201711170141.noarch.rpm)  from the Repo and am
having problems with it.

If I run an update from the Qubes VM manager it throws lots of errors about
unmet dependencies for a few dnf and yum packages and ultimately fails to
update the template.

If however I start the template manually and do a "dnf update"  it updates all
the packages with out a problem.

Is there a way to fix the template so that updating with Qubes VM manager works?

[qubes-users] R3.2: Debian 9 template fails to update 50% of the time

2017-12-05 Thread cubit
Hello Qubers,

I am having problems with a Debian 9 template on Qubes R3.2

The Debian 9 template is an upgraded Debian 8 from the repos as there is no
prebuilt D9 yet.   Each time I try to update it from Qubes VM Manager it fails
the first time  every time with error

Reading package lists... Done
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
Done.
Press Enter to shutdown the template, or Ctrl-C to just close this window.

The only way to get around this is to shutdown the template and immediately try
an update again.

Starting it up again, it it is very slow to connect, sitting at "0% [Working]"
for up to a minute before connecting to the repos and then slowly goes thorugh
them.

Any person know how to fix this so it updates first time with out problems?

That is the problem.   I have done the verify and it passes with no error for

[qubes-users] how to better verify backups to catch restore errors?

Is there a better way to verify that the qubes based backup succeeds?

I discovered today that, while I backup all AppVM and TemplateVM in one time

restore one particular appVM

Yesterday I needed a clean laptop for a travel so I did a full backup and then
removed my "storage" AppVM that contain all my documents as well I delete 2
other AppVM, "gpg" and "chat".   Can you see where this go..?

Today I go to restore the deleted AppVM via GUI.   "gpg" and "chat" restore
perfect but "storage" gives error even though when I veryify the archive it is
ok :((

ERROR: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'/var/tmp/restore_LtT4Jk/vm1'
   *** Skipping VM: storage
-> Done. Please install updates for all the restored templates.
   -> Completed with errors!

 I try using "qvm-backup-restore -d sys-usb /path/to/backup/qubes_backup_time
storage --debug" to see if there are more details.  It fails too and no much
details are extra  See attached restore_errors.txt where it try vm17

What is interesting is that for some reason it is trying to restore vm17 which
is not my "storage" vm based on the qubes.xml in the same directory.  My
"storage" vm should be 1.

I was able to do "emergency backup recovery" on files in vm1 directory and as
hoped, all my "storage" appVM files were in there.

I had to go to backups from February before I could find one that would restore
"storage" appVM from GUI or qvm-backup-restore

Some questions

- how can I better veryify backups working?
- why does it seem qubes is getting confused about appVM qid on restore?
- at top of restore_error.txt file it says only 1MB to restore, even when AppVM
is 1.8GB is size,  why size difference?
- is there anything I can do to compare the good backup that restores via gui
and any of the many broken backups to see what went wrong?
- how can I be sure this qid mixup won't happen again?

To answer my own question.  from the same directory as the vmNN folders:

   cat qubes.xml.??? | openssl enc -d -pass pass:"my_pass" -aes-256-cbc -out
qubes.xml

Then look for the appVM name and the corresponding "qid="

[qubes-users] emergency backup recovery proedue - how do you tell which "vm" folder is what AppVM

2017-06-21 Thread cubit
I am having to do an emergency backup recovery on my most recent backup as a
restore from GUI fails.

I have a lot of AppVM and TemplateVM, 30 in total.   After I extract the backup
archive I am presented with a list of folder (vmNN)  one for each VM.

-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user  93 Jun 14 12:23 backup-header
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 138 Jun 14 12:23 backup-header.hmac
drwxrwxr-x 2 user user    4096 Jun 21 19:23 dom0-home
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user   30752 Jun 14 12:23 qubes.xml.000
-rw-rw-r-- 1 user user 138 Jun 14 12:23 qubes.xml.000.hmac
drwxrwxr-x 3 user user    4096 Jun 21 19:10 vm1
drwxrwxr-x 2 user user    4096 Jun 21 18:45 vm10
drwxrwxr-x 2 user user    4096 Jun 21 19:02 vm11
drwxrwxr-x 2 user user    4096 Jun 21 19:10 vm13
drwxrwxr-x 2 user user    4096 Jun 21 18:40 vm14
.

Is there a way how do I know what vm number corresponds to an appVM name so I
do not have to try restore each vmNN folder to get my files back for just one
problem VM.

You could try re-installing thunderbird

apt-get purge thunderbird icedove

apt-get install thunderbird

[qubes-users] AppVM windows freezing after recent update

2017-04-25 Thread cubit
Hello Qubers.

I am sorry but this is going to be a little vague as I have not been able to
pinpoint much but hoping someone knows a solution or is at least having same
problem.

Since updating dom0 and my appVM templates last Sunday I am having problems
with windows in my appVMs being unresponsive to mouse input.  I can not scroll
or select items in windows.   The menus work in so much as they show the list
but clicking itemes in the menus of a window does nothing.   Trying to click X
to close a window does nothing. Some examples.  if I open Nautilus I can
not select directories to change to or files to open,  firefox will not scroll
windows.    The only way around this is to shutdown the problem AppVM via VM
manager and try again,  some times it works first times around, some times I
have to shut down the AppVM multiple times.

I'm running Qubes 3.2 with Fedora 24 and Debian 8 app templates/vms

Unless I am over complicating my work flow, I have many steps to get a risky
doc to a pdf I can give for some person

- open document it disp vm

- save as pdf

- open dom0 terminal

- get dom0 to open a disp terminal in the same dispVM as the disposable doc

- move converted PDF to a trusted domain

so be 3 extra step it would cut down.

Thank you, I see you mention the need for libnotify-daemon which does not look
to exist as a package in dnf.

For the plugin's line I have

#plugins=ifcfg-rh,ibft

Does it make more sense to match it to that in github ("plugins=ifbt, keyfile)
or just updated to add keyfile to existing one I have.  to be

plugins=ifcfg-rh,ibft,keyfile

[qubes-users] feature idea: creat trusted office document

2017-03-14 Thread cubit
What would be possibility of getting a file manager context menu item to create
trusted office document  like we have for PDF and img currently.

I think make the document its self safe is hard while keeping the file type but
maybe "convert to trusted pdf" would be usable solution?

[qubes-users] sys-net forgets wifi password on reboot

2017-03-14 Thread cubit
I am using Qubes 3.2 with Fedora 24 netVM.

I have just noticed after changing the WPA2 password on one of the Access
points I use that Qubes no longer remembers the Wifi password for any new
access point that I add.

It will remember the password as long as I do not restart the sys-net AppVM or
reboot the computer.

Is anyone else noticing this?

[qubes-users] removing of f23 template did not go as planned

2017-01-03 Thread cubit
Has anyone else run into this.  I was attempting to remove the Fedora 23
template as I no longer use it.

I removed my cloned F23 templates with the gui manager and that went OK but
when I did a dnf remove from terminal in dom0  for the main template I got a
bunch of file not found errors and even though it says it removed the template
and can't be found with dnf list or in qubes manager,  the template entry is
still in my application menu.

Any suggestions on how to clean this up properly would be appreciated

Both are installed in the Fedora 24 template but if I understand correctly, the
qubes gpg wrapper now defaults to gpg2.

I do not want to come across rude but that's not how I see it.   I was using
passphrase fine over several releases and it just stop working for a reason I
have yet to find out why.

Removing the password is not a fix it is a kludge or work around.   A fix is
getting it back to its previous working state with password use intact.

If passphrase use is so seeming temperamental that you have to offer this
kludge, it should be said do not use!

The user experience or even hardware support is an important one.  If people
can't use it, Qubes is doing to languish in some obscurity,   should more
developers be brought on?

I know that is a matter of money or someone being generous with time but
funding should be a possible route (ccing Michael Carbone) but I am sure hard
work to gain or even applying for some like Google Summer of Code.

This is disappointing to hear.    Removing the password sounds like a kludge
than a fix to something that had been working okay.

I understand the model does not technically need a password but it is something
I want (rightly or rongly) and it was working okay since R3.0 which to me
indicates that it can work and just something broke.

I do and see that it is optional which should mean it works. From the page you
say:

If it is not supposed to work  or is not supported it should be said  "do not
use passphrase with key" instead of saying "is optional" as this lead people to
understand that while not needed it works.

[qubes-users] ssh keys gui not working / password no longer stored (deb8)

2016-12-12 Thread cubit
Heia

Since using Qubes (debian 8 template) back to R3.1 when ever I used ssh I would
get a gui prompt asking for my key password and it would be remembered for all
subsequent ssh sessions until I restart the AppVM.

With a recent template update this has broken, now what happens is in the
terminal window I am asked for the keys password but the password is no longer
stored and I must retype for every new session.

Is there an easy way to get the gui / password managed option back?

Does using older and potentially EOL  distros for Dom0 leave it with out dated
software that can be beneficial to users?  e.g. Updated XFCE will always bring
improvements for like with dual monitor setups and other fixes better support
for HiDPI monitoers.    With out these it seem to me that it means Qubes
support gets relegated to older hardware with out fancy features.

Should user experience also be considered for major releases?

[qubes-users] customizing dispVM not working

2016-10-10 Thread cubit
Hello,

I am trying to customize a dispVM on qubes 3.2 but I can not get the
customization to take. I am doing the following

dom0:
`qvm-run -a fedora-23-test gnome-terminal`

In the resultant gnome-terminal I am doing
`firefox`

When firefox launches I am setting duckduckgo as my homepage

I quit firefox

I `touch /home/user/.qubes-dispvm-customized`

I `poweroff` fedora-23-test from the gnome-terminal I opened.

I set the template to default dvm
`qvm-create-default-dvm fedora-23-test`

I then start the disposable firefox from XFCE application menu.

Firefox starts but does not have the custom start page but the standard
http://start.fedoraproject.org.

I tried similar with nautilus changing from icon to list view but it also does
not take.

This was working OK in 3.1. Am I doing something wrong in 3.2?

For mich I do not see any request to kill the AppVM and the uptime of the VM is

I am using an older version of Enigmail as during the time Split GPG and

split gpg on qubes was offering gpg1.

If I want to upgrade my enigmail to the latest is there anything I need to do

sources.list is Debian based,  dom0 is fedora so take a look /etc/yum.conf,
/etc/yum and /etc/yum.repos.d

https://smdavis.us/projects/menulibre  looks promising

But I am think that I just checking with anyone who has experience with XFCE +
Qubes to make sure there is not some sort of compatibility issue by using such
a app and how Qubes interacts with the application menu.

Thanks Eve star but I am not sure this is sustainable, I would rather something
that works with Qubes and will auto add and AppVM as I create them.

[qubes-users] QVM Manager restart fails periodically

2016-10-04 Thread cubit
Hello

I am testing the new "restart" feature in the Qubes VM Manager and noticing
that it is a bit buggy.   There is one piece of the puzzle however that I can
not figure out allowing me to replicate it consistently or narrow down why it
fail some times

The first time I  select a VM and press "restart"  after an indeterminate time
frame the restart will fail with the error below.   If I try and restart any
number of other vm immediately after they will all restart ok.

error:

[qubes-users] XFCE Application menu

2016-10-01 Thread cubit
hello everyone.  just upgraded to 3.2 and liking it.   one question I have..

Is there any reason (other than trust) not to install MenuLibre
(https://smdavis.us/projects/menulibre) to dom0 so I can organize the
application menu to do things like group the templates?   Or perhaps I am
missing some already installed way with out having to manually edit config
files?

It's actually fedora-23-stable-dvm based off a copy of the template

Here is the file list,  there is one noticeable difference when comparing it to
fedora-23-dvm folder.    For my template volatile.img is chmod 600  while it is
644 in fedora-23-dvm.   Changing the permissions to match 644 does not change
anything, the problem still exists

[qubes-users] disposableVM not really disposable

2016-07-26 Thread cubit
Heyya

I have discovered my disposableVM Firefox is not really disposable as history
persists between sessions.

This came to notice as I have recently customized my browser, setting up a new
start page and removing the hello and pocket buttons.  Though I have noticed
similar issues before customization though did not think to check if history
was being stored.

Over the last couple of days each time I start Firefox I get the "Well, this is
embarrassing." error with a restore session tab for my home page.  I also get
two other tabs to Mozilla pages => The first run page and a bit ironically a
page showing the private browsing mode.

I opened the history tab today to discover I have 3 days worth of history
stored in the browser.

I can work around this by doing a qvm-create-defalult-dvm
but I would like to know what is the best way to fix this permanently.

Hi Qube Newb,  you will not easili be able to reply to any email threads that
happened before you signed up, as as you noted you will not have receive
them.

I do not see an easy way of requesting old email from google groups so in my
mind there are two option, both having some downsides

1. reply via the google groups page
(https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/qubes-users)  AFAIK this requires
you to have a google account to reply from there

2. You could copy the contents / subject of email you want to reply to from
the web interface of google groups.  This will break email threading and as a
result it will not be seen as part of the same conversation by the google
groups web interface and not grouped with the other emails in the
conversation,  similarly any email client that does a threading view will
have it separate from the original thread.

Maybe others have better suggestions
