[RBW] Re: My Rivendell Platypus - A Forever Bike Build

2024-05-27 Thread Dan
Thanks for the followup, Armand. Your experience is likely what made my LBS
recommend me staying with the 43s on my Quills. But good to know it's
possible if I ever insist! I don't mind anyway on that bike - the 43s suit
it perfectly and are plenty comfortable. They leave room for fenders too.

With regards to switching to an Appaloosa, firstly, it's a great bike! I
love mine.
Secondly, be aware that the geometry is slightly different at the front.
The Appaloosa has a 72 degree head tube angle vs. the 69.5 on the Platypus.
Not sure what that means for real-world handling but I thought I'd point it
out.
Which brings me to my next point: have you considered an Atlantis? I think
they have a similar HTU (70) and slightly more tyre clearance than an
Appaloosa too. The trouble is finding one...

2024-05-15 Thread Dan
I thoroughly enjoyed this write-up. I can tell you've put in a lot of
thought to this bike, and it's beautiful.
Your approach to this build as a performance upright bicycle and your
subsequent revelations as to the comfort mirror my own on my new, purple
Appaloosa. I have the same bars too, but slightly wider tyres! All I need
is some bar tape and to mount my shifters upside down like yours for those
secondary hand positions to really be dialled.
Hope you have many more adventures to come.

PS: I was told the Quills couldn't handle 48s (I have them on my
singlespeed). Are you running yours tubeless?

Re: [RBW] Dog ride

2024-04-29 Thread Dan Bluestein
Patrick: It's urban and traficky where we live, so she rides in the trailer
until we get a few miles up the hill to where there's more space around.
Then she runs alongside, tethered to the trailer, a couple miles, until we
get to where the trails are, where I lock up the trailer and she gets to
run free while I ride. She stays in the trailer the whole way home
downhill. She's a 41lb mutt: mostly german shepherd, pit and chow-chow,
about 1.5 years old. She tolerates being in the the trailer just fine--she
was gradually introduced to the trailer by giving her meals in there at
first while it was on the ground, wheels off, then while slowly rolling it
back and forth by hand, working up to pulling her around the back yard. But
when running alongside, she used to get distracted by squirrels and try to
chase them, sometimes pulling hard enough to tip the trailer on its side,
the racket making her freak out and causing her to try to run more and drag
the trailer, causing more racket and more freak-outs. But as she's gotten
more mature that doesn't happen anymore. Our prior dog, for whom we
originally got the trailer years ago, was a 75lb lab mix who would leap out
the trailer's head-hole at every chance so he had to be zipped entirely
inside and he'd bark the whole ride. I'm a scrawny lightweight so pulling
him was never too fun and he definitely seemed like he wasn't into it so we
gave up after maybe a dozen short rides. The trailer went on extended loan
to a friend who used it infrequently and gave it back recently.

Robert: I've never heard of bikejoring, looks like fun, maybe I'll look
into it when this pup gets a little older if she seems like she wants to
pull.

[RBW] Re: Long wheelbase = long chain

2024-04-26 Thread Dan
I'd like to hijack this thread with a question relevant to the title, if
not the OP's actual question:

*How do people manage the lng chain getting wedged between the tyre and
chainstay?*
I'm loving my Appaloosa so far, but when I'm in my 24t chainring and on a
bumpy road, the chain flys around, hits the knobby side of my rear tyre,
and gets sucked in and wedged. It's not a great sound.

My first angle of attack is to go for a slightly wider BB. There's a 115mm
BB installed now, but the crank manufacturer

recommends a 119mm.
After that, I'm going to try and fashion a kind of chain bash guard like
Ultraromance did
on his Atlantis for this very issue. Finally, I'd look at swapping the rear
derailleur for one with more tension maybe? I'm using the Deore M591, which
looks good, but maybe a different derailleur with stronger spring would
lessen the chain flying around?

[RBW] FS 2017 58cm (CTT) Homer AHH Frame, Fork, Headset

2024-04-23 Thread Dan
Relisting since Spring has sprung.

Dropped the price to $1300 + ship for the frame, fork, headset.

This is a 2017 "short" chainstay, Waterford (I believe) A. Homer Hilsen

It measures 58cm CTT (which is, I think, how Riv measures) or 56 CTC on the
seattube x ~56.5cm TT. The chainstayz are 47cm (center of drop out to
center of BB shell).

Condition-wise, this is a handsome frame but there are paint chips and
wear, but no dents, no rust.

I might have parts you need, but I think I will hang onto my spare 650B
wheels which I had previously offered.

Fresh photos (just shot earlier today):
https://photos.app.goo.gl/WygAM61nM5u6uiNJA

Located in the greater LA area. I can get a box from the LBS and ship
safely, with a label from PirateShip.

Cheers!

Daniel
Yorba Linda, CA

[RBW] Re: Long Chainstays - What Problem/Deficiency Do They Solve?

2024-04-06 Thread Dan
Roy, I've found I have BETTER climbing ability on my Appaloosa with its
super-long stays. If you stay seated your weight is rearward enough for
traction, and thanks to the long stays the front end doesn't want to lift.
That means you don't have to lean forward as much as you would on a
regular-stayed bike which again improves traction on the rear end.
In practice, climbing steep dirt paths with the Appaloosa feels like I have
a motor out back that pushes me up the hill. It's great!

[RBW] Re: NBD - Purple Appaloosa

2024-04-06 Thread Dan
Thank you everyone for your kind words. I'm enjoying the bike more the more
I ride it - it engenders a different, more relaxed pace - perfect for
exploring.

Eric, your Appaloosa with Ortho bars was an insipiration for me, so your
words mean a lot!

Jay - funny you mention C, because this frame actually made its way to me
from them! They are super nice people and I love what they're doing with
bikes (obviously).

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-30 Thread Dan
Chris, can I ask how this ended up working for you? If so, what shim did
you use?

I've set up my Appaloosa with the Orthos and a 120mm VO single-bolt 26.0mm
stem.
The comfort and control is FANTASTIC, but I can make the bars slip if I
push down on them hard. So far it hasn't happened while riding, but it
makes me feel a little uneasy that it might be possible.

I'm wondering if I need to go for a 31.8mm Nitto faceplater or, *gasp*, a
threadless adapter and threadless stem :S

[RBW] Re: FS: 58cm 650B AHH F/F/HS

2024-02-20 Thread Dan
Good morning. I was told that the measurements didn't come through clearly
in the pictures, so I remeasured and this is a 56. It's squarely 56cm,
measured center to center. When I posted yesterday I misremembered and
unfortunately I can't change the subject line. *It is a 56cm.*

The seat tube measures 56cm CTC and the TT (CTC, but there's a 2* slope) is
about 562. Riv's geo chart is here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170602082329/https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry

And here's the geo on BikeInsights (comparing the 56 and the 58):
https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5a1e69902a0c030014708caa,5a1e69902a0c030014708cab,

Finally, here's the product page from that same archive/same era is here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170704042854/https://www.rivbike.com/collections/framesets/products/a-homer-hilsen

The only picture with the measuring tape I can discern is the headtube
(~246mm), which is not a helpful measurement, IMO, but I know a lot of
people look at that like gospel.

[RBW] FS: (Riv-adjacent) Black Mountain Cycles "Road"

2023-07-09 Thread Dan
For your consideration: my 62cm Black Mountain Cycles "Road" in the Merckx
colorway. Build is Shimano Tiagra/GRX w/ Wolfooth NW ring, Thomson seapost
and collar, Fizik stem, Pro bars, Tektro brakes, front brake lever is a
Tektro aero, rear is a Tiagra brifter, Panaracer Gravel King tires. Saddle
not included.

Shown with 82cm saddle height:
https://imgur.com/a/NPQNQvb

Is it a Rivendell? Sorry, no, but the geo is close to a 61cm Roadeo but
with 20mm more reach (and some other minor differences that I consider
close enough to come out in the wash):
https://bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=5d61b35e6b56b4001760f48d,5b8578f548f3a30004789b17,=,64aacf93ef92a7001f16d310,

$1050. Located in SoCal. I have a bike box and will ship at cost
(PirateShip--or you provide label), if you're not local.

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Summer Riding Photos 2023

2023-06-19 Thread Dan Bluestein
Thanks Brian! The bar wrap is teal, but dusty from the trail. I had the
bike built by riv and didn't specify anything either way regarding
treatment but I think they put on a coat of clear shellac (this is my first
time using cloth tape and not sure I know the difference between shellacked
and not, but it doesn't seem like just plain fabric).

All--I agree with Ted, keep the photos coming. It's everyone's beautiful
images that inspired me to stop being a lurker and share mine.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Suntour Cyclone GT long cage

2023-05-24 Thread Dan Bluestein
Like Reginald suggested, I bent a new tab onto the end of one of those
springs a year or two ago. It has held up so far, but the derailer is only
in use as a tensioner on a dinglespeed. Getting the bend angled so that it
would go back together correctly was a little bit of a nuisance, but if
nobody has an intact derailer for you, give it a try.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne vs. Romulus?

2023-02-10 Thread Dan Sullivan

Dave, thanks for all this. My original post took over a week to clear the
moderators (apparently) and in the meantime a very nice 91 Bstone RB-T came
available and I jumped on it. I had one a few years back and have been
keeping one eye open (off and on) for another one since it was my fave of
all time.

Anyways, my Rom is a 63 and I haven’t yet decided what I’m going to do with
it.I like it a lot, the color is great, it rides and fits nice and fits a
38 gravel king w/o fenders. The T fits a 38 WITH fenders though and since
my storage is limited I will part with one of them at some point, most
likely. My BMC monster cross isn’t going anywhere, nor is the screamer
tandem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2022-09-25 Thread Dan Leahul
I'm going on my ninth year of owning my Paul Racers. I have no doubts that
they'll last me my cycling lifetime. They are clever, overbuilt, beautiful
brakes. Using these in their long reach context, they offer many times over
more braking power and braking feel than anything else out there (r559, Dia
Compe, etc). A few hundred dollars for decades of blissful braking doesn't
seem like that bad of a deal, unless you're working with a extreme budget.

Seems odd to have to convince a Rivendell owner the value of Paul
Components! The two companies seem very similar in terms of offerings and
ethos.

I say buy them and never look back.

Re: [RBW] Canti-Rom - 63 cm - CA Delivery

2022-08-11 Thread Dan Sullivan
these are a great color. I've got one that shares time with my BMC
monstercross. Really a nice, light, fast bike and it seems like everyone
who sees it comments on the color. I run 38 Gravel Kings that are wonderful
tires.

2021-11-06 Thread Dan Sullivan
Another thumbs up for the Gravel King 38 slicks. Have a pair on my
canti-Rom and they are really fast and comfy smooth at 35-40 psi,
super-great tires. I've not ridden any RH tires and they may be even
better but these are so nice I have no desire to spend the money to find
out.

[RBW] Riv BB memories

2021-09-12 Thread Dan McNamara
Making room in my daughter’s bookshelf for incoming 4th grade type books and
came across this in a copy of “Little Bear’s Friend”.

I do miss that kind of interaction with Grant. Went to knot tying classes, took
my daughter to book readings, flipped Dylan records over on the turntable. And
tested out a few hatchets.

[RBW] Re: Roadini Tires: Anyone running 38s?

2021-06-20 Thread Dan Sullivan
Not on a Roadini, but I can squeeze 38 gravel king slicks in my canti-Rom
and those tires are amazing. Never ridden anything so fast and smooth. I
go about 50-55 psi on mine, and weigh in the mid-220s, and they feel
perfect.

If you can fit 38s go for it.

[RBW] Re: Repaints

2021-04-17 Thread Dan Sullivan
A friend of mine got his fatbike painted by a body shop and it is really
nice. I for one will never again ship a bike to a painter; last (and only)
time I did that I sent my prized machine off and they destroyed the fork
which was a key part of what made the bike special. They did replace the
fork and it was OK but the bike was never really the same. Still great but
not the same.

[RBW] WTT: 63cm Canti-Rom for 60cm Hillborne (original green one)

2021-03-08 Thread Dan Sullivan
Not sure the moderator(s) will let this through; most of my infrequent
posts are on the iBOB list. But if they do here's the deal: I am tall with
pretty short legs (I broke Trek's "what size frame should I get" app when I
entered my dimensions) and I've always wanted a bike in the 60-62 seat tube
range with a longer-than-60-cm top tube, which seems to be the limit for
nearly all production frames. One of the exceptions was the first
Hillborne run, which had a 61cm effective TT. I had a line on one last
year that never panned out, meantime I got the Rom, which is a great bike
and I will ride it happily but I'm using a long-setback post and a
ridiculously long stem and it still feels a little short for me (it has a
59.5 TT).

So if you have a green Hillborne from the first run and wanna trade for a
slightly sprightlier bike that is equally rare, let's talk.

Dan, where the snow is almost gone in southern WI

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB Nitto Big Back Rack - LARGE

2020-12-01 Thread Dan McNamara
I’ll second the Acorn Medium Saddlebag. Holds an amazing amount. Side pockets
are great for small items (phone etc) that you need to grab in a hurry. I have
never had a thigh rub issue. I have 3 of them.

The only issue with Acorn is the wait for stock. This bag seems to sell more
slowly than others that Acorn makes so it is fairly easy to buy one when they
have a batch of bags to sell.

Leah - I could loan you one for a test fit if you are interested. Just let me
know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Chambray shirt deal alert

2020-11-19 Thread Dan McNamara
I have a few Edgevale shirts and pants and have found the fit to be loose but
not baggy. Hopefully this batch holds to that.

My Riv fit comment was based on the old RBW shirts - I would be a medium in
those. As I have a couple of shirts on the way I hope that fit will hold up on
these. If they run big that is much better than running small.

Admittedly I did not check the size chart.

[RBW] Chambray shirt deal alert

Edgevale has their chambray shirt from last year on close out for $34. I have
been really happy with this shirt. The fabric is not pre-shrunk but a good wash
and dry gets it to a perfect Riv fit - not fitted with room to move. At $89
they were a good deal. At $34 it is a crazy good deal.

Re: [RBW] Talk Me Out of Building My Own Wheels

2020-10-23 Thread Dan Sullivan
When I build wheels (I've done maybe 4 or 5) I just lay the new wheel next
to a built wheel and copy the spoke pattern. I may have watched a video
once; may have read something from Sheldon. Except for the one time when I
threaded the spokes backwards (elbows out when they shoulda been in) I've
never broken a spoke and they have stayed true. The time I broke one spoke
I looked at the wheel and, oh duh, saw my mistake, turned the spokes around
and it's been fine since.

I do have an ancient cast iron truing stand someone gave me and I use it
but I've also just put the wheel in a frame and used the brake pads as
guides -- leave the quick release (or straddle cable in the case of cantis)
open until you get it pretty straight and then close them when it gets
close to true. I don't claim to be a role model, but I have enjoyed
building wheels. One January at the Madison swap I scored a bunch of MA-2s
and MA-40s, some new and some built on cheap hubs, and I have built several
nice wheelsets as a result. Still have a couple waiting to be put together
when I need them.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: (2) Acorn bags-medium-original tan

2020-09-16 Thread Dan McNamara
Hi Joel,

I also own both the Sackville and the Acorn bag. The Acorn can expand quite a
bit aft from the pics and has an inner closure to keep the contents from
spilling out. The shape and the side pockets are what makes the Acorn work
better, for me at least. Shape has no thigh rub. Side pockets are perfect for
phone, wallet, small tools what could be tough to dig out.

But either is a good choice.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I agree that the longer reach measurement (relative to the bb) Defintely
helps, which this bike does have. I have ridden sweepier bars on bikes
designed around drops and always felt weird to me. Trail on this bike is
around 65-69mm depending on tire size. I suppose it does differ a little
from a riv in chainstay length at 423mm with the sliding drop outs slammed
forward but does have a 20mm to play with (423-443). I’d assume that this
could alter handling slightly too weight distribution wise.

This is good Information. Thanks. I will be getting a custom 650b fixed gear
soon and have been contemplating fenders... but between the rear wheel flipping
for gear Changes and the general style of riding I do, I feel like the
simplicity of the bike kinda gets lost somewhere. I think I’ll just get wet.

Hi Joel,

I have both Brooks and Berthoud saddles and prefer the Berthoud for a leather
saddle. It does appear the Boulder Bikes has a couple of black Mente in stock.

Another option to look at is Rivet. Their saddles are nice as well and they
have a “try before you buy” program.

Re: [RBW] Re: Semi-OT: chambray

2020-03-29 Thread Dan McNamara
I’ll throw Gustin into the mix. I have a couple of their workshirts and they
are pretty nice. And a chambray shirt which is more dress shirt than work
shirt. The business model is a little RBW-like as they don’t start a run unless
they have the run funded enough to cover costs. All the clothes are MUSA
(primarily SF.)

The jeans are also an awesome deal for the price, quality and MUSA-ness.

Sizing is a bit of an issue as they tend to run slim.

[RBW] MUSA Pants

2020-03-19 Thread Dan Kretzer
What can you tell me about the fit of the current MUSA long pants now back
in stock? (the tapered ones)

Always find buying clothes online risky. Most Riv stuff is cut generously
but I'm probably at the upper end of the XL.

[RBW] Re: Paint curing and seat post bolting

2020-03-06 Thread Dan Kretzer
Kevin,
The paint will be softer during the curing process and will slowly harden.
You could start building anytime but could risk surface damage if you're
not very careful.

Stay away from HD! Go to your LBS for the binder bolt. (or call the
painters and ask them to send it)

[RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-01-31 Thread Dan Kretzer
PG
I've had the same thoughts during the last few years. (will be 72 in April)
I was living in a high density area and although my past involvement in
motorcycles taught me to anticipate the worst, I was getting less and less
comfortable riding on the roads.

I retired last summer and part of the decision to move was to live in a
more bike friendly environment.
We now live within a mile and a half of a network of Rail Trails. The area
is also very bicycle friendly with clearly marked bike lanes in a town that
has mandatory traffic stops for pedestrians.
I couldn't imagine life without some kind of outdoor exercise.

Where I used to live it was difficult finding safe routes but not
impossible. As others have said seek out the better roads. If you don't
live near paved trails perhaps there are some close enough to drive to and
bike from there?

Read up on bicycle safety. Use a rear view mirror and lights, know your
place in the lane, take "box turns", etc. It's not like it was when we were
growing up. Try to make sure drivers see you and anticipate that they
won't.

Riding smart keeps it fun and enjoyable.

Re: [RBW] WTB A few items

2019-11-06 Thread Dan McNamara
Hi Andrew. Finally back together here. Last week was rough.

I have the two Gravel Kings. Still on a bit of a hunt for the Mark’s Rack. I
found the slightly used one but I am pretty sure I have an unused one which is
what I wanted to sell. I’ll dig around a bit more the next day or two and see
if I can locate it. It not I’ll probably have the used one available.

Sorry this is taking so long.

I have a pair (actually may have 3) Panaracer Gravel King in 650B x 48. also
have some Big Bens in 650B x 48 if those are of interest. Not sure if the are
the raceguard version but will check. Schwalbe tires do run smaller than spec.

Also might have a Marks rack but need to dig around for it.

We are getting ready for a couple of days of power shutdown here in Marin but

Re: [RBW] OT: non-bike hobbies

2019-10-08 Thread Dan McNamara
I have a few hobbies that ebb and flow depending on what else is going on.

Rebuilding lever espresso machines.
Mostly the smaller machines like La Pavoni, Olympia Cremina, Sama. Friends find
machines at garage sales and I’ll fix them up and show them how to use them.
Parts are readily available. Nice combination of wrenching, plumbing and
electrical. Occasionally I’ll sell one to fund further endeavors.

Playing guitar and ukulele.
Working on this with my 8 year old daughter. A WIP on both our parts.

Film photography.
I have been down the photography route before. Decided to leave the Nikon SLR
alone this time and use a fixed lens rangefinder. Decent ones are fairly
inexpensive - there have been lots of good recommendations on the list
recently. Tuning up a older camera can be pretty satisfying. Replacing light
seals or a stuck shutter is not too difficult but does require a clean space
and concentration. Then you get to take pictures with it.

Friends have tried to get me interested in other things - stamp or coin
collecting, baseball cards, Frank Zappa records etc - but I have so far
resisted.

Re: [RBW] Re: Huge Rosco Mixte

2019-10-03 Thread Dan McNamara
I used the Yepp seat rack mounted as we had to switch between two bikes. It
worked great on a Tubus. The Cheviot had the Ursus stand and it was the
most steady by far. I tried lots of stands (VO, Hebie, Pletcher, Lumintrail
etc) and the Ursus was the most steady for the precious cargo. I always
kept a firm grim on the bike when the cargo was on-board, of course.

I have quite the cache of stands if you want to try some out. Let me know
and we can figure something out. We have moved on to a cargo bike for most
travel until she is more steady by herself for long distances.

Re: [RBW] Re: utility biking shop in SF east bay?

2019-04-23 Thread Dan McNamara
The Recyclery in San Rafael (a bit of a haul, I know) tends to have a fair
number of used commuter type bikes at reasonable prices. I am going to be
stopping by this afternoon and will let you know if I spot anything decent.

You might try California Pedaler in Danville - they always have used bikes
as they have a good trade-in policy.

The IGH might be tough to find on a used bike beyond a 3-speed.

I have a few other as well

Hi Justin. I have quite a collection of dual legged kickstands gathered for

[RBW] Re: Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-25 Thread dan boyle
I have Joe A that I set up with racks, dyno lights, fenders and it is my
commuter bike. Loved it from day one. I ride it 5 or 6 days a week. I had
a Trek Domane 2.0 that I used for weekend speedy rides. It felt a little
small, and compared to my Joe A it was obviously not nearly as comfortable,
but it was light and fast and I liked that part. I was deciding between a
road-build Sam or a Roadini.

Will told me the Sam was pretty close to my Joe A, and might not be
"different" enough to feel like a different ride. He was right. My
Roadini arrived several weeks ago. It is exactly what I wanted it to be, no
extra stuff bolted on, just their recommended wheels and brifters with a
3x10 setup Light, comfortable and fast. My Trek and Joe are 58's, My
Roadini is a 61. I ride it every chance I get. I would get it again in a
second...it is perfect. The Trek is up for sale, never to be ridden
again. The Roadini is just too smooth, comfortable and fast (enough for
me).

Re: [RBW] Re: Kids Stuff - What child seat fits what bike?

2018-07-26 Thread Dan McNamara
I used a Bobike Mini on my 52 Bombadil. That bike (early version) had a 59
TT and I used Bosco bars with it. My PBH is 84.5 so there was plenty of
height clearance. The clearance to the nose of the saddle was good - I
never had a problem with feeling crowded. The Bobike is more upright than
the iBert which is a good thing for clearance.

Anyway, the front seat was great until she was 3 1/2 and then I stitched
her to the back of the Cheviot with a Yepp Maxi seat. She never liked the
Burley trailer.

A friend used the Bobike after we outgrew it and really liked it as well.
He used it on a threadless mountain bike.

Re: [RBW] Cheviot and Bike Rack

2018-06-22 Thread Dan McNamara
You might take a look at this hitch adapter:

http://www.hitchsource.com/torklift-ecohitch-hidden-mini-cooper-hardtop-door-2015-14-in-receiver-p-36883.html

It is a bolt in so there should not need to be any fabrication. It is a
little strange having the hitch right above the exhausts but if there is
available space then why not.

Here is an over-dramatic video of the install: https://vimeo.com/145407793

A body shop could do this install pretty easily.

[RBW] FS: NIB Luna Cycle BBS02 mid-drive kit with 48v battery $600

2018-05-16 Thread Dan McNamara
Pardon the non-RBW content but since there has been a fair amount of e-bike
conversion discussion lately I thought I would throw this out there.

I purchased this kit to convert my wife's cargo bike (Bike Friday
Haul-a-Day) but she is not really going to be up for bike riding anytime in
the near future (unfortunately.) So instead of taking on an unneeded
project it is time to move this on.

The kit has never been installed or really out of the box. It is programmed
to 750W but is capable of delivering more power if needed/wanted.

Plenty of info available on the Luna Cycle site:
https://lunacycle.com/bafang-bbs02-750w-middrive-kit/

$600 plus shipping for the complete kit.

PM with any questions. I am in the SF Bay Area and local pickup or delivery
would be great.

Dan

Re: [RBW] Re: Canti Sam vs BMC monstercross

2018-05-14 Thread Dan Sullivan
I think either one would be fine. I had a Sam during my flipper days and
didn't really give it a chance. I have a v. 3 BMC now and feel like it
will do anything I want a bicycle to do. Which for me is commuting on
crappy WI roads, occasional easy singletrack, and basic bopping around.

So I guess I'm a content person now with my BMC whereas in my Sam days I
was a fretter... Nothing to do with the actual bikes themselves tho. Main
difference in the builds is I'm running bigger tires on the BMC (43)
compared to what I had on my Sam (35). I think if I'd tried 43's on the
Sam I would have stopped my flipping right there.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-04 Thread Dan Sullivan
In order, no longer own any of them so take this with a grain of salt.

1. Quickbeam. Green 62. By far the one I wish I still had.
2. Redwood. Green 65. Very nice road traditional road bike but I'm not that
interested in this type of bike anymore. One of my all-time favorite
colors, for bikes or anything else for that matter.
3. Mountain Expedition, burnt orange. Miss this one, although I really
don't like 26" wheels anymore so it is probably nostalgia.
4. Hillborne at Riv HQ, liked it.
5. Hunqapillar at Riv HQ. Wanted to like it more than the Hillborne but
didn't.
6. Hillborne at my house, bought after riding one at HQ (not the same
one). Did not like it at all, did not really give it a chance. Was in my
fast-flip phase of biking; a lot of bikes went in and out without getting a
fair shake, this was probably one.

The NewLantis looks really cool, esp. with the curvy tube in my size. I've
downsized to two bikes and haven't bought a new one for a while and won't
be, so there ya go. Old guy prattling on about the old days.
