I'm sure you feel less stressed and in a good mood when you arrive to work

Beautiful bike too!

I had the same problem with my Sam.

I used a piece of aluminum shim stock or you could use a piece of coke can
trimmed about 1 wide x the circumference of the post. .Also there are
collars out there that you can put around your seat post to keep it from
slipping..
Worst case scenario is to take your seat post to a machine shop and have
them lightly knurl the area on the seat post that is clamped.
It's frustrating I know.
Hope one of these suggestions helps.

There will be friction otherwise the cable tension will move your

installing your cable and have adjusted the tension make sure your lever
doesn't move on its own.Make sure the hex screw is lose enough to allow
comfortable shifting and tight enough to keep it from moving on it's own.
Hope that helps.

It has full range of motion and seems to shift up and down as needed. I
guess that I was expecting it to be smooth for a lack of a better way to

 to.

I installed it per the Shimano instructions. The parts seem to fit

 Any input appreciated.

The Cross Check handles brilliantly with the loaded front bag (trail in the

[RBW] Re: Repair help needed - Stuck stem expander wedge

2015-03-29 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
Hopefully it's caused by corrosion and the liquid wrench will break it
loose. Another common problem is over tightening the stem bolt causing the
steerer tube to bulge.Do you have access to the expander from the bottom of
the fork? Can you remove the fork??
I use water proof marine grease on my stem and use it liberally.
Good luck with your project.

After removing the noodle bars, I decided to remove my stem as well. I
loosened the bolt , gave it a light wack with a rubber mallet and pulled
the stem right out. Unfortunately, the expander bolt remained inside the
head tube. Despite my best efforts I cannot remove it.

What I have tried - so far
 1) Put the stem back in place, put the bolt back, tightened things up and
tried to remove it again. Same result as before
 2) Put the bolt in (no stem) and screwed it into the expander bolt and
tried to pull the wedge and the bolt out with a pair of vice grips on the
 bolt. Again, no go.

At this point I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do. My plan was to
replace the stem with one that had both a longer quill and a longer
extension. However, I am guessing that if I cannot remove the wedge that I
 am in big trouble.

Any advice / suggestions about what to do would be appreciated.

The bike is an early 1990s Trek 520. These are not the original parts.
The stem was likely in place for three or four years before I started
 fussing with it.

But what to do. No cell reception. No access within my daughters stamina

Deckers. Let’s find one and make a night of it and then figure out what
 makes sense in the morning.

The ride there went very well. Riding roads with my daughters has gotten
so much easier since I’ve told them to ride where the right wheel of the

The campsite was great! No one there (that would change). River to

1am the revelers arrive. Just as they were talking about building a

6am came. Scents from the laundry of the college crowd waft in. We pack in
a controlled hurry, hit the road back to Deckers, stopping for breakfast

I decided that was enough flirting with brain overload for me, so after a
credit card eating pay phone SNAFU (not to be confused with SMAFU) and
bizarre game of phone tag, my wife picked us up and we are home a day

[RBW] Grant sets them straight with letter to editor

2015-02-24 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
In the new Adventure Cyclist Mag

PETERSEN RESPONDS TO READER

LETTER ‘UNRACING? UNCOOL’

Racing attitudes, bikes, clothing,

and diets have become the norm and

normal, and are so pervasive that many

adult cyclists, maybe even some you

know, accept the racing standards as

the only legitimate way to be a serious

adult cyclist. What I tried to do in the

book *Just Ride *— and what we do here

at Rivendell Bicycle Works — is offer

an alternative, a model to other adult

cyclists that there is another way. This

letter is not an ad for either. I’m simply

saying where I come from and what I

do.

We are the mice trying to squeak

above the roar at the base of the

waterfall. It is no time to be wishywashy,

but I try hard to not offend.

Inevitably, a declarative position on

any matter is bound to raise a few

hackles with those who have a different

position, but it still hurts to be judged

by a stranger who would probably like

me, and whom I’d surely like, in person.

A good number of our customers are

middle-aged and older folks trying to

fit in some activity as they age. They

often have the means, and they’re

influenced by what they read and see

that promotes racers as a good model —

and that’s something I don’t agree with.

They shop as innocents and come

out of it dressed like racers and riding

bikes that are not only inappropriate

for the kind of riding they do, but are,

on top of that and more egregiously, not

comfortable. We undo that. You may

see ego or evil behind it, but I don’t

feel either of those. I see racing and

racers as fringe and am simply trying

to legitimize an alternative point of

view, one that I feel strongly about. I’m

trying — certainly not singlehandedly —

to make people feel good about riding

without dressing in pro-team gear and

copying so many other affectations of

the racer, and that is what Unracing and

*Just Ride *and Rivendell Bicycle Works is

all about. We’re nobody’s enemy. Some

of my best friends pedal cliplessly and

in spandex. It’s cool.

[RBW] Re: Solvent tank for drivetrain cleaning

2015-02-24 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
I've had this 5 gallon Safety Klean solvent tank since 1985.It's good size
for bike parts cleaning, including hubs mounted on wheels . Has an easy
change filter and last time I checked they will exchange the reservoir with
fresh cleaner fluid. The reservoir separates from the top and is easily
exchanged when it gets dirty. The fluid drains back into the reservoir when
turned off and I haven't noticed any fumes when not in use.
It's nice to have a small air compressor to blow dry your parts (do it
outside) immediately after cleaning to remove all solvent and adding new
lubricant if doing so.

Most manufactures hold demonstrations at National Parks and areas that are
popular for snowshoeing. You can try their models out for free and they are

I like Tubbs and Atlas they have been around for a long time. Shop around

say: Sam Hillborne with a head badge on the front,PLSE.
I was drooling over the Mondaine watch but can't swing it right now, but
would jump on the hat and tee.
I think a hat and tees offered for each Riv model frame would sell.
If you agree or would like one, give a shout out to Mr. G.

After Gonzalez we dropped into Penasquitos Canyon after climbing a short

2014-11-02 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
I've lost 20 lbs since June.
I have read some of Grant's blog from his new book and I have read Just
Ride. He has many good points
What works for me: no carbs. No toast or grains for breakfast. Milk has lots
of sugar. I'll eat 2 scrambled eggs with some chopped turkey and onions. No
more Friday pizza night. No more homemade bread.I snack on fruit..a few
nuts ,apples my fave.I drink lots of water.I SOMETIMES do eat pancakes
BEFORE a strenuous bike ride. I ride my road bike for 90
miles/week, intense exercise and weight loss. I don't eat any carbs after
exercise . I drink coconut water during and after exercise..It works for me
for recovery(low calories, 400 gms potassium) No energy drinks or sugar
filled fruit juice. Eat dinner early as possible. No snacking after dinner.
It's okay for your stomach to feel hungry or empty.VERY IMPORTANT..portion
size, portion size. My wife and I split a rib eye, or chicken breast.Switch
from 12 plate to 9 plate.Cut out fried food... you can roast or grill. or
steam vegetables and meat.Same for fish.Stay away from prepared foods from
the grocery. They are full of sodium and fat. Cook from scratch.Substitute
Greek yogurt for sour cream.I don't drink alcohol.Eat lots of salads but
limit those heavy salad dressings.
Everyone is differentAs you age your metabolism slows and it takes more
to burn off the calories.
That's what works for me. Hope that get's you motivated. I feel better. It's
easier to climb those hills.

Hi Paul,
I ride pretty upright most of the time with my hands on the end of the bar
.But if I'm climbing I grab on to the front of my Albatross bars which
shifts my weight and I'm leaning over not quite horizontal towards the
front. Not as much as if I were in the drops of my road bike. In either
position I'm comfortable .I've only ridden my B-17 three times and I have
no pain or discomfort after 30 plus miles/ride. I've made minor adjustments
to the nose of the saddle each ride. Hope that helps. It's a great saddle.

My brain was a no-go yesterday and I was reflecting on how there is no
substitute for being out riding or running or camping. Nothing approximates
and one of those things, let alone the combo of bikepacking.

So it was with elation that I woke this morning to clear skies and happy
brain and headed down from our house to the Pikes Peak Highway turn-off to
climb back up again. Wow! Did it feel good to be pedaling my way up the
highway. Early on after the toll booth I switched to my low gear of 32-22
on the flip-flop side. The ride to Crystal Reservoir is steady climbing but
relatively easy as it’s in the woods, protected mostly from the wind, and
still at the altitudes I ride frequently (8-10,000 feet).

Things got interesting a bit after the halfway point (9.5 miles). The road
was much more exposed to the wind, and it was steady at 30 mph with gusts
to 40. The grade of the road was such that I may have been able to ride it
sitting down without wind, but it would have been pushing it. Of course,
standing make me a huge wall for the wind to blow against, trying heartily
to send to backwards downhill. The next three miles to Glen Cove were very
challenging. I stopped about ever half mile or so for a mini-breather,
kicking into high-altitude climbing mode 3-4 miles before I figured I
would. There was brief respite from the wind on occasional short sections
of switchbacks, and I made it up these with relative ease, so perhaps on a
less windy day that estimate would hold.

I steadily made it to Glen Cove, 7 miles shy the summit. Of course those
seven are likely doubly harder than the previous 12.5. Being near treeline,
there was nothing to stop the wind, and the direction of the highway was
mostly into its teeth. I tried standing pedaling and was able to inch my
way forward. That, and me being wimpy, all combined to make the decision to
 turn around an easy one.

The descent. Sublime. Wow. Smooth, curved flowing road. Amazing! Then I
caught up with a vehicle and had to slow way, way down. On a straight-away
I was able to pass, and did this several times. Passed bike tourists on the
“we drive you up, you bike down” tour. The support van driver had cheered
me on on the way up (in a good, didn’t startle me way).

The 4 mile section from the base of the PPH is a very familiar 4 miles of
gentle climbing I usually do in 40-16t. Since I was already in that from
the descent, I decided to stay in it and see how I did, to get a benchmark
of if I was out of shape, or if the wind was a big factor. I had a headwind
back, but rode it with ease. Hopefully that bodes well for the next time I
give this a go, which I look forward to doing!

[RBW] Re: Seat post clamp bolt snapped

2014-10-13 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
My seat post slipped also on my Hillborne. Part of the frame prep at any
bike shop is to take an abrasive round brush and smooth out the inside of
the seat tube where the seat stays and top tube have been welded to prevent
scratching the seat post.I measured my seat post and it was right on at
27.2.
I solved my seat post slippage by wrapping a piece of .010 shim stock (
any auto parts store) around the seat post before inserting it into the
seat post. A piece just enough to cover the circumference of the seat post
and about 1 wide. It's about as thick as heavy duty aluminum foil. That
solved my slippage problem.
On Monday, October 13, 2014 9:47:14 AM UTC-6, DS wrote:

I emailed brian @ riv who helped put this Hunq together, but while I wait
for a response I thought I'd swing this by the RBW group since I'm
generally not very mechanically inclined (I learn by you tube videos).

 1. Been having major issues with seat post slippage on the Hunq. Every
time I think I get the seat post clamp (which is part of the frame) as
tight as I can get it, within 30 minutes of riding it has slipped a good
inch, maybe more. I've never had this issue on a bike before, how do you
address this? More grease or beeswax on the seat post? Different bolt?
Quick release? Would having a medium sackville with all my camping gear be
weighing it down more and causing this?

 2. I stripped the seat post bolt (the one in the seat post clamp, not the
saddle rails), so decided to take the whole bolt out and bring it to a LBS
or hardware store to get a replacement one (it stripped just enough that i
could no longer tighten it, but I could still loosen it). Upon turning it
counter clockwise to get it out, the bolt head snapped right off. Now the
rest of the bolt is stuck in the clamp (again, the clamp is part of the
frame). So, how does one get the bolt out? Both ends are buried in the
housing that is inside the clamp braze ons (is that the right terminogoy
here? Is this something an LBS would have the tools to do? Or do I need to
find a mechanic who knows how to drill a hole through the center of the
bolt and extract it out that way? Is there an easier way? Anything to
consider so I don't mess up the frame?

I did a lot of reading about setting up a Brooks Saddle.A majority of
people said tip the nose of the saddle up. I did just a bit. Went for a 30
mile ride.
The saddles positioned as far back as possible. I was expecting pain and
discomfort. Didn't happen.I did experience sliding forward into the
hammock.
Started to feel some discomfort at the end of the ride. but bearable.
I got home and tipped up the nose a bit more.Took it for a short spin..No
slinding forward. Felt very comfortable
I'm very pleased. And what a piece of art and craftsmanship! I got the
Honey color.Just beautiful!.

attach it to my bike with a piece of bike chain and a crap load of zip
ties, but still she was unfazed. Those things would not stop a thief. As
much as I hated to admit it she was right. That's when I decided to the
opposite tack: make the bag super *easy* to detach and carry. I know that
Riv sells a Nitto-made doohickey for just such a purpose, but come on,
$100? That's almost as much as I paid for the friggin bag.

Anyhow, that's how I ended up making this thing:

 https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pz2jSRSID5M/VCdBEfiAUWI/B5E/Sch1951fkR4/s1600/IMG_5445.jpg
For the record, yes, I blatantly copied the Nitto design as much as
possible, and took some cues from another DIYer who had made the same kind
of thing and posted it on Flickr. I couldn't figure out the attachment
mechanism of the Nitto mount from the photos on the Riv site, so I just
made a back plate and sandwiched the saddle rails between it and the main
plate that you see in the photo. Seems to work well enough so far.

The body of the mount I made from aluminum flat bar, so I'm sure it's not
as durable as the Nitto one, which I assume is steel, but how strong does
this thing need to be? The tube that the QR skewer goes through is just
1/2-inch PVC but I decided to wrap it in bar tape to avoid the toilet paper
 dispenser look.

I made this in a few hours with no power tools except an ancient
BlackDecker drill and if you don't count the cost of the drill bits and
tap (which I wanted to have anyway), the whole mount cost me about $15 to
make. Most of that was the cost of the aluminum flat bar, of which I have
plenty leftover for other projects. (I already had the QR skewer from I
don't know where.) Anyway, it was a fun project, not just about saving a
 little dough.

[RBW] Re: Considering my first Riv purchase and looking for helpful advice

2014-09-22 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
I'm a new member of this group and recently purchased a Sam from Rivendell
and built it from the frame up.I looked at the LHT and it's a great bike
and the price difference definitely stood out.
I never rode either bike before buying my Sam.
The thing that put the Sam above the LHT was the people at Rivendell. You
can call them anytime and no matter who you talk to they know their product
line and they will answer your questions with enthusiasm .The same goes for
the people in this group. The Rivendell people know what works and what
doesn't and won't sell you components that are not compatible with other
components or the bike. They ride what they sell. I think the Rivendell
buying experience is something special .Buying a bike should be fun and
they will be there after the sale to help with questions or problems. One
example is I was in the middle of building my Sam and I realized that I
forgot to order brake levers.I called on a Friday afternoon and Vince
understood that I would have to stop until I got levers and went out of his
way to ship out the levers that afternoon and they were in my hands before
I needed them.
Everything that they suggested has worked out great. It's the first bike I
have ever bought over the phone and it is the most comfortable bike I've
bought in 30 years of riding.
Tell them what you want to use the bike for and they will fix you up with
the best components and accessories and you can trust they won't sell you
more than you need.
My two cents.

a friend's Long Haul Trucker and I've come to realize that the last 30
years have brought desirable advances to bicycle technology. The time has
finally come to make an upgrade. I love the ride of steel, and the look of
lugged steel in particular, so I'm looking between the LHT and the
Rivendell Sam Hillborne. The advantage of the LHT is that I'm riding one
now and know exactly what I'd be getting. It's also about half the cost of
the Sam. The Sam has the advantage of beautiful lugs, possibly superior
components, and a reputation for lasting a lifetime. It also fits my ideal
of a comfortable go-anywhere bike. Does anybody have any experience with
both that may help me decide? Even better, does anyone know how I may go
about test riding the Sam Hillborne? I'm in Tampa FL.

I plan to use the bike much as I do my current one. Mostly recreational

trip and rare credit card or light touring. Whatever I get will need to
take me through the level wooded area and fields between my house and the
 nearest paved bike trail.

versions of the HRM strap and both have inconsistent readings or no
readings at all and fortunately I bought them at REI and returned them
without any questions. Many users have cited polyester clothing flapping in
the breeze as the problem.I recently bought a MIO Link
http://www.rei.com/item/874581/mio-link-heart-rate-monitor wrist strap that
works well with the Garmin. Strapless HRMs are the new future.

[RBW] Re: QB BB spec

2014-09-11 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
What brand is the BB? Does the creak happen when both pedals are on the
down stroke? Have they ruled out a pedal? I'm sure they removed the BB and
regreased the threads before reinstalling. Is there play when the crank arm
is pulled side to side? A light coating of oil on the spindle before
installing the crank might help. Those creaks can be annoying! Good luck
with that!
On Thursday, September 11, 2014 10:04:33 AM UTC-6, Tex69 wrote:

My LBS is having a problem dealing with a nasty creak in the BB area of my

ISO or JIS, or whether the crank (standard Sugino crank that shippped with
the QBS) is the issue. The most recent is that the BB installs fine and
that the crank arm might be rounded off and not setting.

Any QB BB wisdom would be appreciated. My QB is a low-mileage sunny-day
machine that has 2000 miles or less. IMHO, it should have a trashed/rounded
crank unless it was mis-installed in some capacity. I ride and rarely
wrench, at least on BBs and cranks.

[RBW] Re: Well, Damn

2014-09-07 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
People just can't wait 3 seconds for a bike to get through an
intersection.I hope you recover quickly.
Inspect your bike for hidden damage:
Feel under the down tube and top tube just behind the head tube for any
bulges that may have ben caused by the impact. Have the bike shop remove
the fork and inspect the fork crown and steerer tube for bends and
cracks.Have them put the fork in a fork jig to check the alignment .Have
them service the headset while the fork is out. Have them give the bike a
total inspection *The V-DUB guy will pay for it.. You don't want something
to happen later down the road that was caused by the accident.*
Hope you are feeling better and back out on the road soon.

[RBW] Steel bikes on T.V..and ,Movies

Since you joined this group or owning a Rivendell do you notice yourself
focusing on the , steel, mixte, step through, and fendered, bikes when you
see them in movies and on T.V.? I do.
They are especially prevalent in foreign films and British series like
Masterpiece Classics on PBS.
I was watching a foreign movie on Net Flix and there was a young woman
riding a step through wearing a full length dress. It had fenders, chain
guard and a bar brake.
I may not of paid much attention to detail had I not owned a Rivendell or
since joining this group.
Fun stuff.

[RBW] Re: Chains and cassettes

2014-08-24 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
A lot of chain wear is closely related to the riders choice of gears. If the
gears that are commonly used are at extreme angles then the chain is going
to wear faster as well as the chain rings and rear cluster. Also some
riders have a smooth cadence and others hammer and don't let up during
shifting.

[RBW] Re: Chains and cassettes

2014-08-19 Thread Jon in the foothills of Central Colorado
Clean and lubricated parts work better for sure.Gotta love the toughness of
those Campy parts.I have Campy 10 speed on my road bike. The components
are 12 years old and still works fine.I use a Campy 10spd chain along with
a Wipperman connex master link for easy off and on to clean. For those days
when you'd like to remove the chain but don't feel like doing it, there is
a product I found at the bike shop called: Rock and Roll Lubrication. You
shake it up and apply a steady stream at the cassette while freewheeling
the chain backwards. After about 5 seconds wipe the chain thoroughly. It
cleans and lubricates. Leaves no oily residue.
Also Rohloff and Park Tools make a Go-NO-Go gauge that can tell when to
switch out your chain before it wears out your cassette .Also you can
measure your chain stretch with a 12 scale, pin to pin to see how much
your chain has stretched.

Hope you are out on your bike soon.
