[RE-wrenches] Lithium age question

2018-11-02 Thread Jay
Hi all,

As a lithium battery ages, does the voltage keep it’s flat line steep curve but
just start it’s drop at a higher voltage or does it have more of a gradual
voltage drop?

Thx

Re: [RE-wrenches] Mate 3 shutdown

2018-10-10 Thread Jay
Hi Dana,

If you look at the graphs, are they smooth or really kind of unclear ?

How often do you clear the internal data?

The mate 3 has a fatal flaw. Th internal data will over write code once memory
is full.

One indicator is locking up, another is the graphs looking unclear.

It’s recommended to clear it at least every 6 months.

And even with current firmware and clearing memory, I still see it happen.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Neutral sizing

2018-09-23 Thread jay
HI Drake and all,

Thanks for this.

As I understand this better now, maybe. Neutral sizing changes between supply
side and load side of main service panel.

Others have chimed in with an argument that can be made that if the neutral
wire is sized for a 200 amp service then it should be OK even if the ungrounded
wires are larger. Yes there would be higher VD than with the 500mcm but this
would only be at fully 1 phase loaded which is highly unlikely. However the
wire ampacity wouldn’t be in question even in a 100% 1 phase load.

This project the owner decided that rather than fight the county, he had the
money to install the 500mcm as a neutral.

I have been just trying to educate myself for future projects and as often is
the case with me and the NEC, its more complicated that I thought.

[RE-wrenches] Neutral sizing

2018-09-21 Thread Jay
Hi all,

I’m wondering if there is code reference to size of neutral vs power
conductors.

County is requiring neutral same size as mains 240vac.
As it’s 500 mcm due to VD (200 amp service) it’s a non trivial expense.

I know that where I live, the utility brings in a smaller neutral than L1/L2

Thanks in advance

Look at the grundfos RSI

It’ll go up to 37kw for standard 3 phase pumps.

At 37kw it’s 480 3 phase output and 1000vdc input if I remember correctly

I guess I was thinking that 50kw + was probably
A darn big house and probably be outbuildings
that the inverters would be installed on.

Yea bringing 1000vdc to a house is a bit much but then
we said that with 600v too.

HI Harry,

The battery is charged from the AC side correct?
And is the charging algorithm inside the ABU.

If so why couldn’t you use a generator to charge the battery?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Trojan L16RE-2V set-points

2018-09-11 Thread Jay
Hi Mac

Here is the Trojan info you need

https://www.trojanbattery.com/pdf/TrojanBattery_UsersGuide.pdf

Looks like 4 hrs max absorb and 29.4v and that could be a bit long depending on
how much solar, size of the generator and how they use the batteries

Usually the set points are at factory default!

[RE-wrenches] New house LED lighting/switches

2018-09-11 Thread jay
HI all

I’ve got a client ( potential client) that is looking for info on “best” LED
lighting for a house.

Yes yes I know, be more specific.
They should be
dimmable
color adjustable ( warm to daylight)

1. recessed ceiling lights

2. cable down/up lighting and possibly monorail lighting

3. switches: What he means is what about using wireless switches/controls. To
me he means having a controller on the wall and smart phone control vs having
hard wired switches.
It makes some sense with the reduced wiring, and labor?

4. Brands

5. where to buy ( me)

This is a very fast moving segment of the industry and its really hard to keep
up, or at lease me anyway.

I very much understand this is a very personal subject, and I know there will
be lots of opinions out there!

thanks

Hi Dana

Yes in the last year I bought a new refrigerator
( kitchen aid)
And didn’t buy a LG due to really bad reviews,
class action lawsuit on compressor problems
etc. Too bad as there other stuff is really
well made.

I would only recommend a refrigerator that
you can get repaired locally under warranty

Re: [RE-wrenches] Off-grid refrigerator

2018-09-09 Thread jay
HI Will,

Here are my recommendations

1. try to find out how loud it is. Most new ones are much louder than your old
SF. Fans and all that. And they do run a lot of hours per day due to small
compressor size.

2. get one that is repairable locally, much higher failures today than 10 years
ago.

3. energy star

4. features that you want. The only features we’ve got are ice maker. Love it
and wouldn’t get one without it.

5. As to defeating the defrost, if its even possible I would argue against
doing that. While yes it uses more energy on any given day for auto defrost,
overall unless you defrost often, ice is a wonderful insulator and it can and
will end up using more energy to keep the freezer cold with an ice build up.
And you won’t be able to turn off the door seal heaters, defrosters in the
fridge part etc. And heck isn’t that also part of the fun of the new fridge,
no defrost?

Happy shopping

Re: [RE-wrenches] mod waveform LED dimmer

2018-09-05 Thread jay
HI Ray,

Yea thats a good assumption based on CFL’s.

But LED are different.

What happens is that the LEDs will dim a small amount and then ( there are 4
LED lights in a light fixture) one will turn off for a short while ( few
seconds) then it’ll come back on and another will go off and on and on it goes.

I’ve see this on other systems from a generator with poor quality.

Its pretty odd and totally random.

The options for this customer are going back to incandescent, or maybe there is
a LED/Dimmer combo out there that works. And as to trying out others, yea
thought of that but they are expensive and could be a big rabbit hole.

thanks

[RE-wrenches] mod waveform LED dimmer

2018-09-05 Thread jay
HI All,

I’m asking the group for a very obscure piece of information.

I have someone with an very old Trace 2012 mod wave form inverter and wants to
use their new LED bulbs with a dimmer

Does anyone know of any LED/dimmer combos that will work?

thanks in advance

Re: [RE-wrenches] Forced air Furnace

Hi Dan

For larger uses, buying 55 gallon drums is usually best if you can’t get bulk
delivery.

Where I live, they deliver kerosene though.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Forced air Furnace

2018-08-24 Thread Jay
I’ll add another choice to the thread which is kerosene

The direct vent remote tank kerosene heaters are the most efficient, least
costly way to go.
Rinnai is one of a few Japanese heaters.

Many people I’ve worked with have gone this way vs propane. Either direct vent
or central heaters systems. And all have commented that the cost was
significantly less with kerosene than with propane.

That said where I live we can get kerosene delivered like diesel, in bulk. I
don’t know if everywhere is like that.

But either way, with best insulation design practices it greatly changes the
metrics of heating design. With that reduction in heating load, central whole
house heating is often way more expensive than with zone type heating.

It’s back to reduce the load before you have to power it.

If I was designing an off grid heating system it would be with kerosene vs
propane.

My 2 cents

Re: [RE-wrenches] DC-DC converter for SQFlex

2018-08-21 Thread jay
HI Gary,

The customer is always right, ha.

If they want a DC option, I know you can find the right part.
As to how big of a DC DC converter, yea I would want it to handle whatever the
pump could draw. If there is any way that a valve could be closed or a pipe
frozen or clogged, the pump will push and push and push and draw max amount of
watts. Under normal load, it won’t of course. PV direct you’ll be watt
limited, but with a battery, no limits up to max pump watt draw and you don’t
want the converter to fail.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SOC and LFP batteries and TriMetric

2018-08-21 Thread Jay
A follow up question to all of this:

Does anyone know what parameters a BMS is using to determine SOC for lithium?

A project I installed uses the Orion BMS jr for lithium batteries. It uses a
normal shunt, voltage and also measures internal cell resistance to determine
SOC.

[RE-wrenches] Non breakable RV modules

2018-08-20 Thread Jay
Hi All

What are good options for a portable module for RV use.
One that you can move around, (it’s going to fall over)and connect with a cable
to an camper.

The old unisolar ones were perfect.

Any recommendations are appreciated
Size? 50-100 watts, 12v nominal.

Thx
Jay.

Re: [RE-wrenches] SOC, FNDC, and LFP batteries

2018-08-18 Thread Jay
Interesting thread as I was just in contact with someone with a LGchem coupled
to a solar edge inverter.
He’s seeing at times 20-25% less capacity than rated kWh and pretty much never
actual capacity. Tech support gives some wishy washy answers as to why this
would be. Where is the difference, is it in the communication between units or
the BMS? And funny as he’s never seeing more capacity.

Maybe there are some inaccuracies in the BMS’s?

Standard OB, trimetric and midnight wiz bang meters all require frequent
meeting of charge parameters ( volt/amps) to keep the devices accurate. I’ve
got 4 meters that I compare and if they are full daily it’s about 1-2%
difference between them. If it’s been 7-10 days since full, then they could be
off by 10-15%+ off.

Curious what others are seeing

Re: [RE-wrenches] Cell Cracks

2018-08-14 Thread Jay
I had a module engineer tell me these are often a static discharge issue which
happens during the lamination process.
It’s not effecting the cell surface but the encapsulate above it.
It’s not cracking but it looks like it.

[RE-wrenches] Ace-clamps

2018-08-13 Thread Jay
Hi all.

I am trying to figure out if ace clamp makes a micro inverter bracket.
I’ve seen a photo of one, but can’t find it on their website. Could be old and
discontinued or too new, or?

I have a potential customer who likes the clamping method of the ACE vs S-5!,
and I do as well. I’d be curious others take on that.

This potential project ticks all the boxes for rail-less install.
Low heat, no critters, no leaves, low pitch, few modules, micro inverter,
standing metal seam.

Thanks in advance

[RE-wrenches] Outback ags mate3s

2018-07-25 Thread Jay
Hi all

I’m hooking up a generator with a built in 5 minute shutdown delay.

The mate3s sends shut down signal, inverter disconnects from power. But since
the generator keeps producing power the inverter reconnects after. Few seconds
and starts charging again.

The mate3s has a new feature “ac input reconnect delay time”
However in setting this feature to 6 minutes the inverter reconnects after a
few seconds like normal.

Any suggestions as to fix or programming tips?

Thanks

[RE-wrenches] Outback warranty

2018-06-30 Thread Jay
Hi all

I have 2 old mate 1’s, pre 4.0 firmware.

I just noticed on a new FNDC paperwork, a statement from OB that states they
will update any pre 4.0 firmware to latest rev. ( as the FNDC requires 4.0 or
better. )

When I called OB and talked to tech support, they said no, they wont cover it.

I’m asking if anyone has another avenue, or advice on how to proceed?

OB charges a lot for the upgrading since Alpha took over, which makes it not
worth doing.

Thanks

Re: [RE-wrenches] Wood pellet stove for off grid

2018-06-21 Thread Jay
Hi david,

As someone who has a pellet stove, I wouldn’t buy another.
I’d go with a kerosene heater, direct vent.
Cheaper to operate, bulk fuel, cleaner, no mx, and probably uses less
electrical energy and more efficient I think. ( no glow bar to start the burn
cycle).

I’ve wondering if there are recommendations for steel cased flooded industrial

Would be looking for 12v packs, 1500-2000 amp hr.

There are many brands out there, HUP, IBE, Enersys, others?

Its been a while since I’ve had to even look at them and I figured someone out
there has some current info, recommendations, best price etc.

[RE-wrenches] Xfmr's job?

2018-05-30 Thread jay
HI Dave and everyone,

Its interesting because there is a great deal of difference between OEM’s.

Outback says 4kw at 120v for 8kw radian. ( tech support)

Magnum says 27 amps at 120v, 16.7 amps at 240 for MS4024PAE ( from the manual)

Schneider says 4200 watts at 120v on XW-6848 ( from the manual)

Also I know that the Magnum allows you to charge with just 120v and I think the
XW is the same, OB
you have to have 240v.

Cheers

jay

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fullriver Battery meltdown

Lead melts at 621.

Plastics melt depending on the type between 212f and 491f ( for the most common
ones)
http://education.seattlepi.com/hot-water-melt-plastic-3626.html

But melting and being able to be deformed is very different.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Fire damage

2018-05-04 Thread jay
The key here is how much?

Assuming they have to take them off the roof, and assuming its pretty clear
that there was no fire damage and that they were a name brand and no more than
3 years old.
And now you need to get large pallets, and you won’t have any spacing for the
modules.
They are going to be dinged up, and scratched, they can’t be used for any
system that’ll qualify for tax credits/rebates.

I’d say $.05 per watt, and maybe they should be paid to take them off the roof.

[RE-wrenches] Large Off Grid Inverter?

2018-04-26 Thread jay
There are many large 250kw to multi mw battery based inverters that should
cover this project.

Most are coming out of china, so I don’t know if UL is something they have.
Princeton is one here in the USA, looks like 250kw and 500kwh is their largest
on the web site.
Sun Grow is one of many out of china.

Most of these are using 600-1500vdc lithium battery banks, 50kw 1000v-1500v CC
etc.

A whole new ball game. There are also 50-75 kw units as well, I think the days
of larger cluster inverter systems is coming to an end. The advantages of
higher voltage battery banks is just too good not to use.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Chevy Bolt

2018-04-24 Thread Jay
Hi Darryl

It has to do with the zero point crossing.
With pure sine wave, it crosses almost vertical angle so no time spent there.
Mod square wave usually has a flat crossing, totally screws certain things up.

[RE-wrenches] rail less standing seam attachments

2018-03-30 Thread jay
HI All,

I’ve got a client who is set on wanting to do rail less racking. I’m just
working with him on overall design, hes doing the work.

Its not a large system. 16 modules on two roof orientations, ( 4 on one, 12 on
the other) with offset modules. Standing metal seam roof that is being
installed with solar in mind, lots of fasteners.

Hes very competent and pays attention to details.

Any positive/negative recommendations.

[RE-wrenches] UPS no load draw

2018-03-07 Thread jay
HI All,

I’ve got someone asking me about powering a UPS model

Liebert GXT4 UPS

its a rack mounted unit.

And I cannot find any power usage data on it.

Would anyone maybe be able to hazard a guess or know a similar product that
might have some numbers?

And as I”m not familiar with this kind of product I just don’t have any ideas
of power consumption.

thanks

[RE-wrenches] small 10kw diesel generators

2018-02-25 Thread jay
HI All,

I”m possibly in the market for a small 9-12kw diesel generator.
With enclosure and set up for auto start.

I’ve been looking at the Onan RV diesel sets.
Cummins Onan QD 10.0 Diesel RV Generator | 10.0HDKCA-11506

Is 1800 rpm, water cooled, sound enclosure etc, for around $10,000 and fits the
fill pretty well.

Are there any others or does anyone have anything to say about these models
from Onan?

thanks

Re: [RE-wrenches] experience with the Tesla Powerwall

2018-02-15 Thread Jay
Hi Mac

Thanks for mentioning this, I’ve wondered about it a lot.
Maybe someone who’s a motor or electronics expert can chime in about what
potential damage can occur. Electronics, motors, VFD’s, are used to seeing
voltage +/- by a fair amount, but frequency is rarely off by more than a
fraction of a percent.

If the frequency shift is doing nothing more than turning the GT inverter off (
no stepped regulation) then why do that vs relay? It still makes for a 5 minute
delay on restart, correct?

Thx
Jay

Re: [RE-wrenches] Remote battery monitoring

2018-02-15 Thread Jay
Hi mike,

Install a tristar between the wind machine and the batteries like normal.
Just set the absorb volts way high. That way it will never get to absorb and
hence not regulate.

I use this technique with hydro often, but with MPPT.

Re: [RE-wrenches] 1/2 HP well pump soft start at 120 VAC

2018-02-10 Thread jay
If its an old pump, you don’t say then all sorts of bad things are possible as
parts wear out, all that.
And it could also be your inverter which is probably getting pretty old as
well. I’m starting to see the old SW’s fail and have all sorts of weird
problems.

my 2 cents.

So why not use one of the garage doors that has a built in backup battery and
just charge the built in battery directly?
Its got all the internals already done?

Install a CC and PV module and you are all done?

wow, such great information I’ve gotten from you all.

It all seems pretty clear that this cost + is quite unusual, and I take to

As an aside, pretty unusual to have almost unanimous opinions here on the

FYI, I”ve done many systems in Baja and I get paid 100% in advance before
anything ships. To either the end user here in the states or to a freight
forwarder. Yes once it reaches them, I no longer have control. And the client
is responsible for any damage enroute in MX. Yea lots of weird stuff happens
down there!

OK now I’ve got to contact their money guy.

Thanks again all,

jay

[RE-wrenches] has anyone ever had this happen?

2018-01-23 Thread jay

HI All,

I’ve had a large company want to do a project and they want me to invoice it as
follows. They said it had to do with knowing the cost of the system, but that
doesn’t seem right to me. Now I don’t want to get screwed here, and it sure
seems that could happen.

I’m pretty sure I know what you all will say, but I feel like I needed to get a
bit of a reality check.
As I mostly do projects on a handshake, dealing with large companies isn’t too
common for me.

1. give them wholesale pricing ( line item by item)
2. add margin, but small one is all they’ll accept

Project is an off grid, no permits, in Mexico, remote site and pretty big:
16kw inverter, 9kw PV, etc.

Thanks

jay

Re: [RE-wrenches] RV solar with SunPower

HI Mac,

Sunpower used to have a white paper that showed positive ground was only needed
above a certain voltage. Like 200v+ from memory.

I don’t know if these particular modules would fall into that category.

Re: [RE-wrenches] automatic transfer switch

2018-01-19 Thread jay
HI Dave and Chris,

Good points, however.

I’ve had radian board failures which shut it all down. You are correct if a
power module goes down then it will still continue working.

This project doesn’t need telecomm redundancy but close.
And if the inverter shuts down then the AGS won’t start.

So yea maybe a bit overkill but its a long long ways to go for a site visit.

And again,
50 amps max ( 30 really) and would be good to have built in mechanical bypass.
Nema 1

thanks,

jay

[RE-wrenches] automatic transfer switch

2018-01-11 Thread jay
HI all,

I’m doing a project with 2 radians in a redundant configuration.
Each one would go into a transfer switch to power the common load.

I’m looking for a good, fast transfer switch. 30amp 120/240 is fine.
And maybe a mechanical feature as well.
Code isn’t an issue
Will be off grid, remote mexico.

There is the Iota of course, but was just looking for options.

Most in SS some now in synthetic.
And yea it’s kind of a pain with that type racking.

[RE-wrenches] Covering modules

2017-12-23 Thread Jay
Hi All, happy holidays.

I’m looking for any studies or data about the dangers of “covering modules” and
assuming they are safe to work on.

I have a group that I think is going to need some harder data than me telling
them it’s not safe.

Thanks

I’ve used Iota or Powermax over the years for this exact situation with great

Maybe today there are less expensive options?

Re: [RE-wrenches] Breaker trip

2017-12-06 Thread jay
HI Mac,

This is a pretty common event.

Yes the CC is dumping its caps into the load as the load is in a sense
overloading the batteries. IE they are not able to deliver the amps and so the
CC is helping.
A larger breaker might help, or one technique I’ve used before ( advice from
midnight) is to put a longer output cable on the CC. Slows the pixies down so
you are less apt to dump the capacitors.
However you don’t mention the battery size or age.
I would suspect that you are starting to have some battery issues as thats the
only time events like this occur.

With this new larger load either the battery bank is too small and therefor
struggling to supply current, and/or the age of the batteries is causing a
reduction in current or you have one/few bad cells that are not normally seen
except in conditions like this, or you have a bad connection in/to/on the
battery bank or some combo.

Does anyone know how they actually operate?

I”m thinking they are using a variable AC voltage output from the micros to
operate at MPP matching the resistance of the heating element?
IE more PV watts, higher AC voltage, more load. Lower PV watts, lower AC
voltage, less load?

[RE-wrenches] outback GSLC parts

2017-11-08 Thread jay
HI All,

Does anyone know if its possible to buy the inverter positive DC bus bars
separately?
( its the part that goes from the breakers to the power modules)

And if so where?

My next GSLC I’m looking to use the most striped down version but if I can’t
get the bus bars its hard to mount the main inverter breakers.

thanks

I would imagine that if the breaker and enclosure had the correct AIC ratings
it should work.
But its PG, enough said.

Re: [RE-wrenches] Dusty off -grid conditions

2017-09-01 Thread Jay
Hi William

Sounds like Baja.

With such limited details, I'd consider conditioned space via AC unit.
It would keep the batteries cool, inverter, CC, and ancillary units dust free.
Then you can use the equipment you want.

But if that isn't an option, the XW series has a much better design for dust.
The fan doesn't blow across the power electrics, but behind it over the
transformer and FET heat sink.

Hi Dan

You can use the shunt MV reading via say fluke 87 to double check the amps that

Re: [RE-wrenches] SimpliPhi Power PHI3.4 Smart -Tech Batteries

2017-08-10 Thread Jay
Hi Dave,

This is wonderful info.
And it leads into the what happens when it reaches LVD?
Given that it is using almost 10% per day of battery capacity for the BMS, what
happens when the charging source for whatever reason shuts down. ( CC dies
while people are gone for a few days for one example)
The BMS turns off the loads, but what turns off the BMS and how do you turn it
back on when it happens?

Thx
