RE: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-24 Thread Jeff McFall
I don’t pay as much attention as I used to but I am still here.

started in Softimage 2.66 and stayed till the end.
working pretty much exclusively in Houdini the past couple of years.

I am continually amazed by the potential and flexibility of Houdini but it does
come at a price.
It really is a different animal than Soft.

If I have any regrets it is that I didn’t discover Houdini earlier.
However a lot of the stuff I learned in ICE prepared and set a foundation me
for me to use in Houdini.
I would have been totally lost without that.
I don’t have much of a technical background so what I do understand has pretty
much been learned on the spot.

Still lurking as well, here and on si-community.

Started fiddling with SI|3D NT (up to 3.9), after that moved on to XSI 3.0 and
beyond.
Mostly Maya these days for the generic stuff, but still using XSI for my own
jobs.

Also doing a bit of Unity-Unreal / real-time stuff lately, and keeping an
interested eye on the Blender v.2.8 development.

Yes, sill here, forced to work in MAX for real-time asset baking and
industrial animations, but I get to sneak over into XSI world when
nobody's looking to do the serious work that can be ported back to MAX.
Luckily I can work from my studio in Hawaii most the time.

2018-05-17 Thread Thomas Volkmann

Still lurking...I just started working at a new place and they said they have a Softimage license somewhere, but I didn't manage to install it yet. Thinking of skipping it completely, although I have tons of 'that-would-have-been-so-easy-in-Softimage" moments lately. So it's mainly Cinema 4D and Blender for me right now, which feels quite ok considering the options. Also looking into Houdini and Unreal whenever I can... and someone mentioned TouchDesigner which I never have heard of before. That one looks pretty interesting. Also I just resubscribed with a new mailadress to this list for more intense lurking!Anyone going to Offf in Barcelona next week?cheers,Thomas

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-16 Thread Oliver Weingarten

Hey there,

yes, still lurking here ;)

Celebrating 20 years of 3D...and all SOFTIMAGE this summer. Started with
Softimage 3.7 on IRIX on a noisy machine from hell called "Crimson" ;)
Then NT with 3.8...3.9...XSI 2.0 up to XSI 2015 sp2 and still using it
because no competitor stepped up to made a serious replacement for it.

I miss the times doing stuff together with Eric on daily calls and
bouncing ideas around..had great fun to organize and host the Uebertage
until 2016.
But those days are counted and gone. Still running the si-community, but
numbers of post get lower and lower..so, this list is one of the last
glances of a great community we once had. Still pissed about AD and the
huge damage they caused. I sometimes wonder how many carrers were
destroyed and how much money people were forced to burn into thin
airfor at least nothing.

Usinig Houdini nower days for VFX stuff and it´s big fun. took a while
to get it, though ;) But when it comes to clean up and animate CAD
models, Houdini sinmply does not work in any concern..bu that´s
different topic.

Looking forward to keep on reading from you guys out there and hope, AD
won´t switch off the list to soon ;)

Cheers,
oli

another lurker here.

Switched from Lightwave with SI 5.0, so that would make me a more recent
dinosaur…a chicken maybe :-)

I’m still clinging on to Softimage as if nothing happened. I sometimes have to
work in Maya, just to run back as soon as possible.

I’ve seen some promising stuff in the upcoming Blender 2.8, and I heard
Redshift is working on supporting it as well. So I’m keeping my eye on that as

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-16 Thread Markus Cermak

Add one more Dinosaur

I´m still using Softimage alot (like modelling) :D and added Houdini
into the mix for everything where I can´t go further with SI no need for
an AD Mwhatever.

We started with XSI 5 and think also joined the list back then.

Longtime reader rarely posted but learned a hell lot from all this great
ppl on this list.

Si will be still used for everything where it makes sense and as I´m in
the unlucky lucky position that most of the time I'm a oneman band I
don´t need to worry about sharing assets with big pipelines  blablabla.

Nothing out there beats a combination of SI and Houdini.

This year I’m making my latest attempt to learn Maya and Houdini, just
so I can get a bit more work, but can’t see either of them knocking
XSI off the top spot any time soon, until they up their game to a
comparable standard of creative fluidity.

15 years, I guess I'm a dinosaur, maybe the Cretaceous period?!

Certainly miss Softimage, but Maya is fine once you get over the bumps.
Next thing to tackle is Houdini, although MASH has impressed me a lot
recently.

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-15 Thread Tim Crowson
Seems I have been on this list for nearly 10 years, so that doesn't qualify
me quite as a dinosaur. Maybe one of those annoying chicken-sized ones?

I don't use Soft anymore but I still lurk. Mostly it's a mix of Maya and
Katana these days, but Houdini is likely around the corner for me.

Hard to believe its been 22 years that I’ve been on this list. Still using SI

What a blast to see all these names today! Glad to know you all are still out

I am still using Softimage exclusively, I am wondering if anyone would care to
briefly describe the advantage and disadvantages of using Maya for character
animation. I am hoping there are some advantages.

Still reading every now and then. Career changes lead me away from getting
hands on software these days. Unless you count Excel as vital software for
visual development.

Only feels like yesterday when Kim scolded me on the brand new XSI mailing
list. And even prior on the old Softimage 3D mailing list too.

I do miss slapping on a pair of headphones and just modeling all day.

2018-05-14 Thread Mirko Jankovic
Guess wil have to wait for that closing signa bit more hehe
Unfortunately I'm not spending much time in SI lately, more on freelancing
tasks for animation which is *argh* all maya,
learning character animation in Houdini is a bit on long stick as industry
looking for char animation in Houdini is practically non existent.
Even with my small gpuoven farm there is less and less Softiamge render
tasks to help people with that are closer to statistical error then real
thing.

Doing mainly pipeline and supervising but still uses Softimage with Arnold

Still haven't decided what to learn after Softimage but I'm most excited

It’s GLSL support is outstanding. I use Touch osc to present in no way that

Yep, still here. There's even at least one new person that joined last year
that is on my team--even though we use Houdini, Maya, and Max. The "M's"
will drive you mad. I'm so thankful Houdini is not owned by AD. I only get
to use Soft at home on my personal projects anymore.

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-13 Thread Ed Manning
I still read the list pretty regularly, but have found the S/N ratio
degraded compared to a few years ago.

I still use Softimage a lot, along with Unreal and Touchdesigner. Real-time
is getting to the fun creative exploration place that VFX was in for so
many decades (for me at least).

Touchdesigner is getting more and more capable, and is very ICE-like in a
lot of ways (which is not really surprising given its roots in Houdini).
It's really becoming my tool of first resort for a lot of things. And many
important parts have already been moved onto the GPU, so performance for
certain things is insane. Particle counts in the millions in real-time or
near-real-time, for example.

Dinosaurs are still around in IRL, anyway -- we call them "birds" now.

I still lurk. I still use Softimage with Redshift3D. I still make money
doing 3D animation
for Commercial TV/media. I will retire in about 6 years, so I don't think I
will need to learn a new
application. I believe the next step would have been to look at something
like Unity or Unreal.
It would take the rendering out of the workflow. Redshift3D delayed that
change, for me, as
rendering is not such an issue, now. My system has a dual 1080Ti / SLI
configuration
so render speed with Redshift3D and that hardware, is quite good.

I am a one-man freelance situation, so I can afford to continue along this
software/hardware
configuration, and still make a living wage. I am eternally grateful to
this Mailing List as
it is a good source of information, and a great sharing spirit exists
between all the participants.

I will continue to lurk. Just not a whole lot to post about any more.

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

Yeah, was just getting to the point with ICE where I felt I could creatively
solve most production problems.

It was really amazing for the final tweak phases of a project, where clients
would pixel f@$k with simulations. I was converting my particle sims into
geometry in order to tweak sim paths using deformers and envelopes, precise
control without losing that simulation feel. I miss that creative satisfaction.

I read less and less but like Francois, I lurk over the subject lines from
time to time. :)

How's everyone doing? I for one stopped rigging in Softimage and decided to
focus full-time on Python pipeline work where I jump around in Maya, Nuke
and sometimes Houdini.

I still miss ICE dearly.

Re: Any Dinosaurs Still Lurking?

2018-05-11 Thread Matt Lind
I wouldn't call myself a dinosaur, but I'm still here.

I remember that SIGGRAPH. Nothing like having 10 mosquitos fly in your
mouth when trying to drink your beer. I drove all the way from Chicago to
attend it. Did the trip in 18 hours flat, nonstop, but for me it was the
show where if it could go wrong, it did go wrong.

For example, Kim Aldis and I were invited by Maggie to show examples of
using the XSI SDK in production for the Softimage SDK summit. Upon checking
into my hotel the night before and plugging in my computer, I discovered all
my addons had been corrupted and my original source code to those addons was
on a CD back home leaving me nothing to show. I think Kim experienced
something similar. The next day at the SDK summit after the Softimage SDK
developers finished their lectures, MC Maggie told everybody in the room to
gather around the table where Kim and I were sitting (this was all
unscripted), then spent a few minutes hyping us up as the best XSI users
worldwide to set the stage. Maggie then gave us the floor, but Kim and I
both kind of shrugged our shoulders because neither of us had anything
tangible to show. So we tried to turn it into an impromptu Q+A session, but
it was a long 15 minutes of crickets. The misery didn't end there...

I was also invited by Dave Lajoie to give a presentation how to write
shaders at the Softimage mental ray summit. I was really intent on making a
good showing as I had developed a suite of light shaders for 3rd party
distribution I wanted to show off. But again, my addons containing all my
shaders were corrupt and the source code was at home on a CD. I tried to
explain to Dave, but he just cut me off and reassured me everything would be
alright. He was thinking I was merely a little nervous from butterflies or
whatever. Anyway, I lugged my desktop computer to the summit, hooked it up
to the projector and had to figure out how to fill 20 minutes with nothing
to show. As I look around the room I see Thomas Driemeyer, the head of
development for mental images watching intently. Standing next to him is
Marc Stevens and other important people from Softimage. So I can't do any
fibbing to the pass the time, I needed to be accurate. Frantically
searching my hard drive I found some old code for a light shader, but it was
a really early version that I knew had many bugs. So on the spot I
improvised by introducing the mental ray manuals, where to find information
to write shaders, and specifically, how to understand the manuals as that
was a complaint I often saw on the list (most people only read the softimage
documentation which was often misleading). After a few minutes I saw
disappointed faces in the crowd, so I took a deep breath, loaded my buggy
code into visual studio, and started the demonstration. Before I could get
too far, Dave crawls up on his hands and knees and informs me with a hand
gesture I have 2 minutes remaining. So I quickly rushed through what I
could of my light shader code and showed a few pre-rendered images of what
it could do, then wrapped up. Ugh...

There were many other mis-capades at that show, but I digress.

Upon returning home from the show, I discovered XSI had a bug in the addon
system. In early versions of XSI, all installed addons were stored in a
single file, not separate files like they are today. Adding or removing an
addon meant the application would add/remove the relevant data from the
file. But in the specific case of deleting an addon, there was a bug where
it introduced a byte offset error by deleting too much or too little
information. All addons before the location of the error were fine, but all
addons appearing after the error were corrupted as data would be offset or
missing. If you ever deleted the first addon in the file, then you
effectively corrupted all of them. The only remedy was to reinstall XSI.

Just curious?

Now that I?m a resident in San Antonio, I was reminiscing about old
SIGGRAPHs on the Riverwalk, and came to the realization that the Softimage
mailing lists, for me at least, were my Facebook before there was official
social media.

San Antonio still owes me a camera!
