[OSM-legal-talk] OpenStreetMap's Trademark Licensing Policy
Hello, It is unclear to me what OSM/OSMF policy is with regards to third-party use of OSM trademarks. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Trademark has some information about what the trademarks are, and who holds the trademarks, but I have been unable to find on both the OSM site and the OSMF site any specific trademark usage guidelines/policies for users of OSM data/tiles/etc. (for example, does OSM/OSMF allow others to use trademarked logos/phrases in connection with using OSM maps, and if so, under what conditions) Could anyone please clarify for me what OSM's/OSMF's trademark policy is? Thanks very much for your time and effort! Take care, Adam Saunders ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

I am not surprised that this is unclear to you because there is no such policy, at least not any that's written down! I have no authority to speak for OSMF, the trademark owner, but I can say a few things: * There were cases in the past where someone has sold a mobile application through AppStore et al. the name of which was suitable to make people think it was somehow an official or sanctioned product; in some of these cases, people have been asked to rename their product. * No such requests have been made in cases where people have offered something that was clearly a tool made to support the project, like OSM relation analyzer or OSM inspector or ITO OSM analysis (all three, incidentally, made by commercial entities working with OSM). * Individuals have been doing publications (My OSM Blog) without asking whether it's ok to use the name. I'm one of the authors of a book named OpenStreetMap and it seems this is ok too. * National OSM groups all over the world have registered openstreetmap.xx domains in their respective countries; they don't belong to, neither are controlled by, OSMF. * People have been producing OSM merchandise of all sorts - T-Shirts, mugs, banners, stickers, pens - without asking OSMF, and nobody ever complained. I guess that I speak for many in the community when I say that don't really want to put any obstacles in anybody's way - we wouldn't want some eager community member in Brazil to wait for approval before he can annouce his OpenStreetMap mapping party! So if we ever adopt a trademark policy then it will be as liberal as possible, with a focus on prohibiting misleading use of our name (e.g. someone calling something OpenStreetMap when in fact it isn't, or people making things look like we endorsed something we haven't). But as I said at the beginning, I'm not aware of any policy already in existence. As a rule of thumb, as long as you don't do anything that provokes a community outcry you'll probably be ok. Hi, On 06/28/2012 03:03 AM, john whelan wrote: I think that is what is required, a team to first list what the requirements for icons are then to come up with icons. I wonder if there are any ISO standard icons we could reuse? Not going to happen. In OSM everyone is free to do what they want - editor writers, map style writers, application developers. Mappers can invent new tags as they please. Nobody is going to bother applying to some group to give them an official icon. Different map styles require different icon styles anyway. (I've heard stories of editors even using different icons for the same thing depending on whether it is in the presets panel or on the map...) Having said that, even though everyone is free to use any icon they want and this will not change, many developers would probably not be unhappy about being able to rely on suggestions. So if you and a group of people would like to draw up a catalogue that matches all common OSM tags to high-quality icons that everyone can use, then I'm sure many would turn to that catalogue for guidance. Looking at the Tango icon guidelines for example (that's the icon project of GNOME), probably we can do similar things for maps. I imagine the following flavors of icons: 1) boxed / unboxed (add a background circle/rect/... around) 2) contrasted by additional outline / uncontrasted 3) unicolor / multicolor However, the basic icon may (probably, I'm not sure, this is an idea only) be the same for all of these icon sets: - the content of the icon is possible to set up in pure flavor: unboxed, uncontrasted, unicolor - enrichment of that icon can be done by colorizing it (= unboxed, uncontrasted, multicolor) - boxes and contrasts could be added automatically: Boxes: set the box shape (circle, ellipse, rectangle, ) and a box color and calculate the box around Contrast outline: copy the icon, expand it, color it in a defined contrast color and add it as a background to the original icon probably that could allow to create one icon set that is useful for many (but not all of course) maps. regards Peter ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] No icons (rendering)? -- was: Re: Icons
Would anyone else here like to see objects, namely POIs from accepted categories listed in the OSM but that don't have an icon render always (when there is space on the Mapnik map)? I think that the fact that most often such POIs don't get rendered -- albeit sometimes they seem to, dunno why -- is one of the major flaws of OSM currently to really push it into main stream use or perhaps more so to broaden our contributor base. The thing is that when eg office=* (or shop=mobile_phone or many others) + name=* doesn't get rendered as a node u need to do work-arounds like put the tags on a building or landuse to get such simple POI/object to render. I've run into many enough cases where people have wanted/tried to put something on the map but have given up because the result doen't actually show on the map to come to think that this is a problem that should b resolved. One easy(?) way would be to use a generic icon for all POI types that are officially accepted (ie in the wiki and approved after voting) -- if some icon is really needed (which might b a good idea to point the location bit more accurately). Google seems to use a tiny square for such cases. Could we use a dot? Anyways. This itches me. Would anyone want to help fix this issue? (I don't know how to code.) Re: [OSM-talk] Icons
I think the fantasy is to have a basic icon available for every recognized tag. For custom renders there will always be a need for custom or different icons but I was hoping that we could evolve a basic set that covered tags in the existing map. Yes end users could always use JOSM and look at the tags but to be kinder to them to let them see what is in the map a basic icon would be useful. In other words fill the gaps.

___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Budov s vice adresami nebude (IMO) nijak zavratny mnoztvi. *** Me se vlozeni adresniho bodu do budovy nelibi (pokud to dobre chapu). Vazba budova a adresni bod bude tedy velmi volna, M:N.

*** Me slo predevsim o ten tvar budovy...

Ouais bravo, mais... we have used the commercial map only for identifying the lack of data in OpenStreetMap by data comparison Hummm, hummm, je tousse...
