Can not view html messages

2002-06-27 Thread Markus Mueller

When receiving html messages, it occurs to me very often that the bat!
does not show them (it stays on the message I viewed before) and does
not mark it as read after a few seconds. Sometimes, it helps to
restart the bat!, but this does not carry me far. Does anyone have an
idea about what to do? I would be very happy, since I really enjoy
using the bat!, but can not work properly given these bugs.

I use TheBat! v1.60q under Win98; under NT, these problems do not
occur.

All the best,

Markus Mueller

P.S. I'm new to the list, and I hope this question has not been asked
too often -- at any case, I did not find a similar topic in the
database.

Re: Can Not Send Mail

2002-06-27 Thread Mike Harlos

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks very much for your excellent explanation.

Maybe you might want to take a look http://www.ordb.org and do a
lookup on there, see if it's listed.

It checks out OK:

Queue status for outbox.attcanada.ca (207.245.244.41)
Last added to the queue by: 205.158.67.154
Last added to the queue at: 2002-05-04 04:30 CET
The server explicitly rejected all probes, and has been deemed secure
 by the ORDB testing engine.

I would have been surprised if an outfit as large as ATT had been
rejected, but one never knows.

I don't personally think it is a TB issue itself... more of an issue with the
ISP setup.

I have switched to sending emails to my colleague's university
address... a solution that works, but doesn't fix the problem.

I didn't feel as though the tech support individual had a vast depth
of knowledge, although it was deeper than mine :-)

They probably won't get a lot of complaints if it's restricted to TB!
users.

Self-signed SSL certificates

Hi,

I've been testing The Bat! with TLS/SSL and it doesn't work. When I use OutLook

No.

RvdE or is this a known issue with The Bat!.

Yes.

Additionally (yeah, here come the important part of the e-mail *G*)
there's a way you can tell TB! about this cert.

Create a new entry in your 'Trusted Root CA' (only visible if you have
activated 'Internal Implementation' in 'Options' / 'S/MIME').
Import the _private key_ of your self signed cert as certificate for
this entry.

If you have set up The Bat! using 'Microsoft CryptoAPI' for 'S/MIME'
you'll have to import the public key into the trusted root storage you
can see from within IE.

That's terribly unusual.

I've downloaded quite a few viruses with Amon running and TB! has
never been stopped.

OTOH, I got this machine with NAV2002 and I soon after detected its
presence when it did stop TB! during an infected message download.
Since I knew about the temp file problem (reported on this list), I
just excluded the temp file from real time scanning and that stopped
the problem.

You filter the messages to a single folder, then in the Reply template of
that folder you put this:

%TO=%TO=List Name

This advice cannot be given without issuing the standard health
warning! ;-)

stock lecture
I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates. In
150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates. They
are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address properly.

There is nothing else for which folder templates can be used that
can't be covered and even improved upon using Address Book templates.
There are dangers in using Folder Templates that are not there when
you use AB templates.

The dangers are all complacency based and are at their worst in
templates which use the %TO= macro. If, at the instant you start a
new message you happen to be focused on the wrong folder, the message
gets given the wrong address. This happens when you click a mailto
without changing folders. The results vary from embarrassing to
excruciating depending upon the content of the misdirected mail.

BTW - another mistake in such templates is to use the construct
%TO= without a %TO='' before it. So any
pre-existing addresses are retained.
/stock lecture

Having said all that, folder templates are the only answer. Make sure
that you only define folder reply templates though and use the address
book templates for new messages.

The pages work perfectly on IE 5.5 and later, Mozilla and many others.
NetScape is buggy and there's nothing I can do about that and I'm
trying to code around some of Opera's shortcomings. With those
provisos the FAQ works well and includes a link at the front page to a
flat version which will work on any browser.

There seem to be paragraph and block formatting functions, but can't
figure out how to do simple formatting like bolding/highlighting
text.

Probably Outlook Express g. TB is a plain text email client. You
can't set character attributes in plain text. You have to use ASCII
emphasising like *bold*, /italic/, _underline_ and SHOUTING. This is
actually the only way to ensure that the person receiving your message
can understand the stresses where they appear. Let's face it, email is
about who we are sending it to, not about what we see. The best of all
worlds is where we can guarantee that what we see is what we send is
what the recipient sees. The Bat! is one of the best in the world at
that job.

Is a local font change possible? Am I missing something?

That's a matter of changing the editor preferences. It won't affect
what you send. Also, again because of the plain text limitation and
because of the column formatting capabilities of the editor, you are
restricted to using fixed width fonts in the editor. You may be able
to get hold of some alternatives. One favourite is Andale Mono,
available from the MS downloads site.

... It would be much nicer to have it open a new-mail list

It is one. Just enable the Message list of the Browse ticker
messages folder view window that opens when you double click on the
ticker.

Also, the silly banner won't go away unless I read all the messages.
Isn't there some way to dismiss it? It seems like the only choices
here are to have NO ALERTING or to have NUISSANCE ALERTING. Is there
some work around?

No, but I keep mine minimal by shrinking it to the smallest possible
width and sliding it off the edge of the screen so that only a half
inch of it is visible.

garbage characters

2002-06-27 Thread Tim

I commonly get messages that have special characters converted to
garbage. An example from tonight:

positions $B%_(B141 and $B%_(B90, collectively designated the
3$B%((BTAAT element, are

This particular one came with a Word file attached, so I can
confidently state that:

$B%_(B is an en-dash (used here as a minus sign: –141 and –90)
$B%(( is a multiplication symbol (3×BTAAT).

The person sending these emails is using QUALCOMM Windows Eudora
Version 5.1, and the messages are coming through as plain text only
(no HTML attachment). I assume the problem text is being copied from
Word and pasted into the email.

Can someone tell me:

Where are the characters being messed up (TB! receiving, Eudora
sending, mail server transferring)?

Is there anything I can do in TB! to fix this?

Is there anything I can tell the sender to do in Eudora to fix this?

Both sender and receiver are in Australia, writing in Australian
English, but the problem text is often copied from Word files created
by Japanese or Korean authors.

PMFJI but this is not correct. Cellular phone (or short cell-phone)

I also recently received an email from an Englishman (actually living

his *mobile* phone number (choice of word by him, enhancement by

DH ever will sky-rocket).

I am eagerly waiting for UMTS, for the simple reason that I find
current speeds (including downloads speeds we now get at the internet)
are ridiculous compared to what is to come. A web page needing more
than a 100th of a second to buld up? - Ridiculous! Internet connection
by GSM with a max of 9600 baud? - Ridiculous!

BTW: Is the American CDMA system the same as the European/Asian UMTS?

Ask the sender which fnt he is using (maybe ask him to switch to a

Also check out the charset he is sending the message in. You'll find

That's not so easy to reply at this stage, we have to read on first:

T Both sender and receiver are in Australia, writing in Australian

...and these authors might be using DBCS. Even though the words you
see may be English, the weird characters you reported are
high-ASCII characters. And they being treated differently by

Re: Can Not Send Mail

2002-06-27 Thread Gerard

Hi Ravi,

O am not sure if this is what Roelof already did but you could try the
following.

-Make a sort email in TB! and address it to one of your other accounts.
-Save it as a draft.
-Go to the outbox, select the msg and save as (right click) MSG file.
- Open the file in Notepad and edit what you think is the offending
statement (X-Mailer?)
- Save the file
- Double click (if MSG files are associated with TB!)
-File should appear in your inbox
- Move to outbox and press sent.

It sounds more difficult than it is and it will give you the possibility
to have full control over the headers and see what the problem is, if
indeed it is there.

I cannot think of many. One possibility is that they had a lot of
problems with spam from someone using TB (heaven forbid!), the TB was
the only consistent thing to filter on. Perhaps it is accidental -
the filter might look for an ! in the x-mailer: field. Or perhaps they are

In the light of these events, should we ask the developers to make the

Thanks very much for your excellent explanation.

You're welcome... hope I didn't lose you anywhere.

I thought that too, but recently our mail scanner software that scans for
viruses has a feature to read rbl (ordb and spamcop) reported Verizon/GTE as
having an insecure mail server. When I investigated myself, I confirmed it. I
was in touch with a friend at Verizon, and notified her, she passed the info
onto her techs.

I don't personally think it is a TB issue itself... more of an issue with
 the ISP setup.

I have switched to sending emails to my colleague's university
address... a solution that works, but doesn't fix the problem.

I guess it is a way around until either we, or they find a resolution to the
issue.

I didn't feel as though the tech support individual had a vast depth
of knowledge, although it was deeper than mine :-)

Most of the time, ISP's tech supports are trained on the basic information, such
as how to check to make sure the user is connected, how to test for bad lines
etc, how to check configurations, how to check on certain server statuses.

Re: Can Not Send Mail

2002-06-27 Thread Blarp

Hi Julian,

JBL Perhaps it is accidental -
JBL the filter might look for an ! in the x-mailer: field. Or perhaps they are
JBL sponsored by MS!

If that were the case, then it would filter out e-mails from Becky 2
(X-Mailer: Becky! ver. 2.00.08) which it apparently doesn't.

I wonder if they filter out messages from real spam tools like
WorldCast? (He says checking something.)

Later that morning

The answer is probably they won't because WorldCast doesn't include an
X-mailer header (like a good spam tool wouldn't)!

Works perfectly well with The Bat! address book when using internal S/MIME
(which I can only recommend as a few days ago it was discovered
MY-CryptoAPI S/MIME has some flaws that makes it unusable IMHO).

You'll need to put the text between and including

-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-
...
-END CERTIFICATE-

from your cert file (usually *.pem) into a text file. THIS is the public
key. 'BEGIN' and 'END' lines _are important_.
Name the file whatever you like, if you don't mind make it's extension .pem
too.
Now you should be able to import this file as certificate w/o any problems
into TB!-AB.

Unread messages sorting

2002-06-27 Thread Mitja Perko

Hi!

I am wondering why if I have set sort by unread messages and I receive
messages they are not sorted by unread. You have to reselect sorting
by unread messages to actually sort it or I usually press CTRL-0 to
change sort order. Is the sorting only a one time sort and does not
sort the newly added messages? In this case I think that the arrow on the
column should disappear.

JK This is sad though as these things are about all that's currently
JK stopping me from getting rid of Outlook for my email.

You can do an export of your Palm AB to vCard, then import it to TBab.

It is not a sync though. If you look through the archives you should
be able to find my results of trying to sync with vCards, but as I
recall, TB handled duplicates with no problems (no import), but Palm
DT just created a new entry blindly...

Ah, you did not say it was PW protected in your original msg...

I figured it was an extra security feature - you can't even tell *if*
there's any email there unless you put it the password.

Still, I can see how it would get annoying having to check all the
time to see if there was any new mail or not.

2002-06-27 Thread Ravi Joshi

Just spoke to Tech Support at Cogeco. They were already aware of a problem with TB!
client, apparently other TB! users have been calling in with the same problem.

They downloaded the TB! last night and carried out extensive testing. According to
them, they have not found any problem. I revealed the results of Roelof's experiment
and they were quite curious about the x-mailer issue.

They have asked me to sent them this info for them to look into further. I have
indicated I will send them the entire thread discussed on TBUDL! So we'll see what
they find.

Doesn't work is very ambiguous. Nobody should see a blank screen.
The FAQ works fine for me on Opera 6.02 as long as it identifies
itself as Opera. If you have it set to identify as IE then you'll see
nothing because it isn't IE. In fact, only IE itself is capable of
using the W3C compliant DOM code embedded in the page for browsing.
Other browsers must use a reload technique. Opera works fine for
that, but not if you try to pull a fast one! g

Hello,

I am looking for an password protected SMTP server which allows me to
send mail wherever I am, not depending on who my ISP is for the moment.

It should be run by a serious company, I do not want an open relay

Anyone know a company that offers such a service?

At 4:39 AM on Thursday, June 27, 2002 you wrote the
following about [Mail downloading problems]:

ACM [...] Since I knew about the temp file problem
ACM (reported on this list), I just excluded the temp file
ACM from real time scanning and that stopped the problem.
ACM [/...]

I think, but I'm not sure, that I had NOD32 set to wait for
a user response rather than automating NOD's work when it
spots a virus. That would explain it. OTOH, if it starts up
again, I'll remember to exclude *the* .tmp file but I was
under the impression that TB! numbers it's temp files so
the names vary.

Looking for an SMTP server

I am looking for an password protected SMTP server which allows me
to send mail wherever I am, not depending on who my ISP is for the
moment.

It should be run by a serious company, I do not want an open relay
server but a service I can subscribe to and trust for a long time.

Anyone know a company that offers such a service?

I'm using 2 different way's:
1 - I have an free Account at www.web.de. They are quite serious
and I never have problems with them. It happens sometimes that
I can't connect but that's not so often.
2 - My provider also have an eMail Server and I'm very Happy with
 his Service. www.w-p-s.de

In both cases I Fetch and Send my Mails by POP/SMTP. Hope it's this
what you're looking for.

request (as I understood it): he is looking for a service that allows
relaying (with different From addresses). GMX, web.de and, AFAIK, fastmail
only accept mails for relaying when they contain one of their From

Well... more like a certain age limit on the emails itself. If you

Age Limits. Set a value. After a certain period of time, the age
of the message is met, and it is removed from the ticker. Which, in
