Searching for messages with named attachments

2019-08-30 Thread Tony Hoare
Hello Tbudl,

Has anyone got this to work?

I have tried

Simple: Attachment match

Web-like: Attachment file names Search for . This is weird, it
doesn't find them in the selected account but does find them in an
unselected account.

Searching for DSN reports

2016-08-09 Thread Tony Hoare
Hello Tbudl,

I am searching for the string "Reporting-MTA" in the messagebase to
find the DSN reports. I understand that there are a number of
things to search for but TB! cannot find this particular string.

However, I can see this string visually when viewing message source.

There is a MIME part with header:
Content-Type: message/delivery-status

Is TB! ignoring the section? I am searching for Any Part and have also
tried looking in attachments.

Is this a bug? If not, how can I find the DSNs?

Cheers

Wish: Option to 'Exclude Signature' when searching in 'Text'

2008-02-11 Thread MAU
Hello all,

I have just sent this message to TBBeta. I intended to CC this list but
forgot:

I was doing some searches today and was actually 'appalled' by the
number of messages found that didn't seem to have any relationship with
what I was looking for. I was 'appalled' to the point that I was about
to open a BT report on version 4.0.12.2. But I reverted to version
3.99.29 and got the same result. And it was then when I realised that
many of the found messages were so because the keyword I was using (for
example MyGate) appeared in the signature of many posters.

This is why I think that it would be useful to have an 'Exclude
Signature' option that, when searching in Text, would stop the search at
signature delimiter dashdashspace.

Ok, that makes sense, however I find it quite confusing when compared with how

No, this is definitely missing. And would, at the same time, solve the

No I don't think it should. If it is clearly marked that you are
ALT-filtering there would be no doubt.

I'd propose (don't know if thats possible) to make the column have a
colored (grey or something) background, like in XP Windows Explorer
the column you sort by (saying this I realize this could confuse some
people...as it does not indicate sorting...).

Better maybe: have the column header marked.

What do you mean no option to search. You have all searching options at
your disposal.

The search dialog doesn't seem to work since there's no progress bar to
look at and it always claims the search is complete. However, if you
wait, the matching messages eventually appear. Uncomfortable interface
issues, I grant you.

The alt-click and quick searching also work.

Actually, no. It'll just work, but it wouldn't be as fast as if you had
all message bodies locally cached.

The alt-click and quick searching also work.
How to use those?
Hold down the alt button while clicking on any item in the message
list. TB! will list all messages containing the same message list
element.
So if you wish to see all messages from me, just hold down the alt
button and click on my name in the message list. You can do the same
for message subject, and the various flags. You may wish to see all
messages with attachments. Just alt-click on the attachment icon in a
message containing an attachment. It's a great feature.

The quick search works by just typing in the message list field, the
string that you're searching for. The quick search will do only message
list searches. Not whole message searches.

Hmmm. Current TB! IMAP is such that I really can't speak with
confidence about what you should be experiencing. It may very well be
that the search isn't working for you since, for message body searches,
TB! queries the server and the search is done on the server. The
results are then sent back to TB!. This why the search dialog just sits
there claiming the search was done and no matches found. You wait and
then the matches suddenly appear.

Funny too is, that i can't quoute mails with F4, i only get a blank

Do you first select what it is you wish to quote? F4 will quote only
what you select. If nothing is selected, nothing is quoted. Of course,
you very likely already know this and are just pointing out erratic
behaviour on your system.

To get the quick search to work you first have to select a message in
the list. In other words your main highlight has to be in the list
area and not on the message itself or in the folder list.

Once it is there if you start typing a box should pop up with the
letter you just typed. The first message to match this letter will now
be highlighted. As you continue typing the message selected will
change to match what you are typing. In the latest beta, once the
selection you are trying to find is typed if you push enter you will
get a list of all matches only (much like the Alt+click method).

For IMAP, you don't need to cache mail bodies to search. You shouldn't
have to do that. ThunderBird doesn't cache mail bodies for searching.
It queries the server. Same for Mulberry, the client I'm currently
using most often.

If you have a relatively slow connection, you couldn't do searches if
you had to cache everything locally for searching.

I've never used Outlook, so I can't speak for it.

You're right. Neither Thunderbird nor Outlook do cache. It seems my

message headers. As for bandwith: i use a 2mbit line, so that shouldn't be

IMAP is always changing. It's like a sinus wave of improvements and
setbacks.

I'd say IMAP was at a peak with the beta version 3.0.2.8.
It then took a steep dip in reliability with the introduction of
multiple server connection support with v3.0.2.10 .

Hi,

* Marck D Pearlstone, Monday, March 1, 2004, 8:16:01 PM:

Even if you barely have a signature to speak of, that doesn't make
any difference to whether or not you need a cut mark. You are being
courteous to other readers since at least three lines of text is
added to your signature by the list server.

IMO, a simple name is different from a signature, meaning, the OP
didn't have a signature. The only signature in that post was added by
the listserv, and therefore should have the (additional)
dashdashspacereturn sequence. Or would it hurt if more than
one sig had that sequence? BTW, you TBUDL-Mission statement had three
listserv-signatures without a sig-delimiter before them.
Sorry if that has been already discussed, I haven't found anything in
the archives.

Message Finder: searching for '([^/]++.|)' and simple '++' fails without using regexp

2004-02-25 Thread dAniel hAhler
Hello TBUDL,

I want to search with the Message Finder for mails containing
([^/]++.|) (without ) in the body, but this is not possible without
using regular expressions and escaping nearly every character.
I then get 38 results, which appears to be right.

With plain ([^/]++.|) I get 1858 results (the same as with
([^/]++.\|)) [both without ].

Enclosing the searchstring in ' ('([^/]++.|)') gives 13 results,
where only the last one had the searchstring in there, the other had
even no '++'.

Enclosing in '' (([^/]++.|)) gives 322 results.

Escaping the IMHO only special char '|' with itself (tried with '\'
before) gives 0 results.

Though the help says nothing about escaping '|', '' and '~' in the
search for field there should be something for this.

Glad that RegExp works, but there really has to be a simplier way
for this as most users don't care about regular expressions and won't
be able to search for special characters.

..just tried a search for '++' (without ') and 471 messages showed up,
where the majority had no '++' in them.

All was searching in body only, with no advanced settings ('Search for
whole words only' did not help either).

Bugs? Misunderstanding?

No. Fire up is like Start up or Run. So it means You can

JS What is mid URLs?

An 'mid' is a Message ID. It refers to the Message-ID header field.
All email messages have one (that's a sweeping generalisation and is
only slightly inaccurate - actually it's more like 99.99% of
messages have ID fields, but that's just nit-picking). The term
'URL' means Universal Resource Locator. URL can be applied to
mailto:, http:, and mid: references amongst others.

Hello Cedric,

Is it me or is there a problem in search function ?
If I look for CTI in subject in different folders, it returns a lot
of non accurate answers... Is it the same for you (using The Bat!
2.01). Is the search string too short ?

It seems to be working fine here.

Checking the account name usually selects all folders and subfolders. I can't
help if you'd rather only select a particular folder's subfolders.

Yes, in fact, it seems that it's the advanced option which doesn't
work. If i select case sensitive, I got the same answer... Is there
something special to do to make it works ?

You did it right the first time. But probably there is a bug here.

You may want to collect some examples to submit.

Have you tried businessplan, i.e. without the blanks?

No, I didn't before, but I just tried it and that didn't give me the
results I wanted. After trying a few more things, I found that searching
for the phrase business plan (without quotes) did, in fact, give me
the results I originally wanted. Interestingly, searching for business
plan (with quotes) also gives accurate results, i.e., business plan
in the message, with quotes around them. Guess it just wasn't obvious to
me the first time around that it was working. Thanks, Thomas.

better searching msgs

2003-03-02 Thread Aaron Green
I went to Mozilla mail for some time and really liked--no, LOVED--the
ability to type a string at the top of a message list and instantly
have the msg list filtered to only msgs that contained that string in
the subject or sender...

The Quick Search has always been frustrating b/c there's no find
next...

Would love a search feature similar to that of Mozilla mail. Thanks.

I hesitate to do it again, but thank you very much Marck. It's your
list so I'll make an effort to comply with your suggestion.

My TheBat! folder reply template already was set up for and will
continue to be set up for posterior posting. This email was formed
with that template and then I trimmed the quote. A little thought is
required to understand why I took the trouble to change things around
so my controversial email purposely was formatted differently.

Putting my thanks to Elaine above what I quoted was the quickest way I
could think of to show that my thanks were specifically directed to
Elaine. An argument might be made that I should have snipped what I
quoted below my thanks to save bandwidth, but my interests were a
courteous thank you to Elaine who was truly helpful, and in saving
everybody's time by relieving them of the need to read any further
that my reply. In short, anyone chose to read beyond Elaine's name in
my four word reply did so at his/her own peril of inconvenience.

Thank you for listening.

Just to clarify the main issue here: some list servers would have
dropped your post as being of unreasonable balance - the quoted
material versus new material ratio was way off. Some servers will
automatically throw out messages with ratios of greater than say
4:1. A sound-byte of what you are thanking the person for followed
by thank you for that is more responsible use of bandwidth. What's
a 1.5kb quote block to you is 1.5mb to a server sending in onwards
to 1000 people.

Top posting is only objectionable because it allows reply authors to
remain blissfully ignorant of what may lie beyond the edge of the
window they are busy typing at the top of. It encourages the
laziness not to look beyond what they are typing. Convenience of
sender every time.
