[translate-pootle] [ANN] Pootle 2.8.0 final

2017-08-21 Thread Leandro Regueiro
Hi,

Pootle 2.8.0 final is out! While this has taken some time we as a team
are excited by the great number of improvements, performance and new
features we've been able to add.

A special thanks to all our testers on the beta and RC releases.
Those who've reported bugs and offered pull requests. Also thanks
those corporations that have backed our work or contributed to the
code including: Mozilla, Skyscanner, The Document Foundation, Yelp and
Evernote.

**Improved Security.** We did a complete review of our code, closing
any security issues on the server and in the client. We removed
potential DOS vectors and rethought many of the client interactions
with the server. This is the best Pootle we've released from a
security perspective.

**Major refactorings.** The editor, browse pages and event systems
have been extensively refactored. We grew our test coverage all the
way up to 94% with all new code tested. This has allowed many many
optimizations, it should make it easier to change code in future and
we hope that it will be easier for other to contribute.

**Editor enhancements.** Much faster string retrieval. A number of
fixes and improvements to the checks. Cleaner Translation Memory
display. Plurals are now clearly displayed. Improved search to
separate case insensitive match and phrase match. New machine
translation backends. A bulk suggestion management UI allowing faster
suggestion review. Improved timeline with much more correct data
(more to come as we expand this to language and project).

**Support for teams.** We've introduced user roles instead of
permissions at a language team level. We expect team page to become a
information hub to help newcomers to get involved and helping team
managers to handle their teams.

**Offline improvements.** We've addressed a number of issues in upload
and download as well as adding TMX export functionality.

**Interface changes.** We continue to drive translators to the next
most important task, we've reordered and sorted columns and reordered
next action buttons so that translators work on the next most critical
task. We highlight the top contributors across the site. The user's
page is now more detailed and ready for future expansion. Other
improvements include: Bidi fixes and localized numbers.

**Pootle FS (beta state).** FS for FileSystem, brings back version
control integration. Done in a way that we're quite proud of and
which can manage conflicts from either the FS or Pootle side in an
such a way that it easy to keep things in sync and easy to manage
conflicts and resolutions. We've added plugins that allow for
different FS backends, serializers, language mappings and more. Our
next release will provide a migration path from the old code to Pootle
FS.

Please read first the instructions on Installation [1] or Upgrading
[2] before proceeding, depending in your case, and it is also highly
advisable to check out the full list of changes [3]. Pootle package is
available on PyPI [4].

For support please join [5] and for anything development related you

Hi,
Yes, both are related. The RQ Workers run the code to recalculate the

I am not sure these examples actually require to allow plurals for
Turkish. For example you don't necessarily need to translate
"Yesterday" if "1 day ago" is equally good.

Do you oppose reverting the plural back to no plurals ("Plural-Forms:
nplurals=2; plural=(n > 1);") as it is supposed to be?

Yes, that formula is wrong. But we would use "Plural-Forms:
nplurals=2; plural=(n != 1);" instead, as reported in

Hi,
I am guessing you are running Pootle with runserver. Try 'runserver
--insecure'. If it doesn't work you probably have to rebuild the
assets.

If you provide us more details on how you installed Pootle and how you
are running it we can help you with more specific instructions.

This option was removed. Now Pootle interface uses the preferred
language as specified by the browser you are using. If none is
specified then it falls back to English. This might help you to make
sure your language is sent by the browser:

We don't support elasticsearch 1.7.2. It can be 1.6.0 at most. See
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/latest/releases/2.7.2.html#details-of-changes

Please tell us if all these recommendations solve this issue.

I had to downgrade both to get my install to work, but if this works

[translate-pootle] [ANN] Pootle 2.7.1

2015-09-18 Thread Leandro Regueiro
Hi lists

We are proud to announce the release of Pootle 2.7.1 and Pootle 2.6.1
transitional.

Pootle 2.7.1 is the result of a collaborative effort with Evernote in
order to improve Pootle 2.7.0. As a result, this release includes lots

fill some of the gaps in Pootle functionality.

Also we have updated the transitional Pootle upgrade version with the

safer upgrade from older Pootle versions to Pootle 2.7.0.

[translate-pootle] Pootle 2.7.1 open for translation

2015-09-01 Thread Leandro Regueiro
Hi All,

With Pootle 2.7.0 stabilizing we're going to be releasing Pootle 2.7.1
in the next few days.

We released 2.7.0 without any announcement of translations as our
strings were in flux. Our strings are now stable and we expect little
change ahead.

It would be amazing if you could update your translations of Pootle at
http://pootle.locamotion.org/projects/pootle/ so that they could make
it into the 2.7.1 release.

Once again thanks for helping us make this amazing tool.

Cheers

 Hi,

I hope you can help with an issue I am experiencing when trying to use
 Pootle.

I have installed the software on Ubuntu, but when I try to load any TMX
file into a project I am seeing the following error: 'tmxfile' object
 has no attribute 'parseheader'

I have tried a few different TMX files (version 1.4/1.4b), and I have
also tried converting them to other formats such as XLIFF, but when I
load the converted file I see the same error.

I can't find anything on the web about this problem. Maybe I am missing
 some dependency or something?

Can you please provide us more information. For example which Pootle
version and why are you trying to load a TMX.

Thanks

 Best Regards,
 Derek Cusack

I was hoping to build on the api to search TMX files for translations. Will
 TMX files be supported soon?

Just to make clear, do you mean you want Pootle to be able to use TMX
files as translation memory?

 This would be 2.7.0

We track revision numbers for offline translation. But we've only
implemented that for PO. Files like TMX, XLIFF and .ts don't yet have that
support. IIRC in 2.7.0 final the offline widgets are hidden for
 unsupported file formats.

 Hello!

since Pootle is a Python application, I thought deploying it for production in
Heroku instead of having it running on my laptop. I don't know which steps to
ignore from the installation guide[1] and also which extra steps I need to
achieve my goal. I have a fork on Github of the Pootle project, so, my idea is
 to deploy such code.

 Any help?

I have no idea on how to deploy on Heroku, but you should use the
latest stable release, which is 2.5.1.1. The installation docs for it
are in
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/stable-2.5.1/server/installation.html

 According to

I have installed Pootle on my Arch linux system. This is a Desktop machine.

 As you sed:

Pootle has integrated po4a and the Translate Toolkit filters, which
enabled me recently to upload a trial manpage to Pootle, have it
automatically converted there to PO format, translate it easily, then
have it converted back to g(roff). This simplified the translation
 process considerably.

I have a problem when want to upload the tudu.1 manpage to my Pootle server.

 I get Error message:

 Unknown filetype (tudu.1)

So, it seems that, that my Pootle doesn't upload trial manpage to, not
that automatically converts there to PO format..

 What am I missing here?
How can I solve this problem?

Hi,
Pootle doesn't support such format. So you have to convert it to a
format that Pootle is capable of handling (I suggest PO) and then
import to Pootle, translate, export the translated files, and convert
back to that format.

Re: [translate-pootle] Can I not change the source language of a project?

 Hi,

As a test, I create a project. Then I added a language and updated it
against the template. All worked fine. The texts in the template were
 available for translation.

Then, I changed the Source language and moved the POT file to its folder.
After this, I made some changes in the POT file and tried to update the
 language against the template.

Now, nothing happens. The changes that I made in the POT are not available
 for translation.

Does this mean, that I cannot change the source language? Where is the
 missing link?

No, it doesn't work. If you want to change the source language
(template language) for a project you have to export it, and create it
again choosing the new template language.

Explanation: In Pootle every unit saves a source and a target. If you
change the template language then the source for every unit (or at
least most of them) in that project no longer matches the source in
the new template language. So the update against templates doesn't
work the way you intend.

2014-11-08 Thread Leandro Regueiro
2014-11-06 12:18 GMT+01:00 Edwin Boersma edwin.boer...@fasterminds.com:
 Hi,

Why do I need to add the template language to the list of languages in order
to be able to update against templates?

 The situation is this:

The POT file contains texts from my project that are written by the
developers. Not all texts are well-written English, so I want those texts
only to be the source for the translations. English will be added to supply
correctly written English texts to the website.
So I created a new language called 'source', where I store the POT file.
'source' is used as a template for the project. But without also adding
'source' to the project's languages, I cannot update the other languages
 from the POT file.

But now, 'source' shows up in the Overview and dropdowns, which is confusing
 for my translators.

Could you consider improving the template system in the future?

I am not sure we can avoid showing the templates language without
confusing even more the people. Can you please report this in
https://github.com/translate/pootle/issues ?

 Hi,

We're experiencing unwanted behaviour when using Pootle in Safari. This is
 what happens:

we log in with a user, do a few things, then logout again. Then try to login
with another user. Now, we are still logged in as the first user. When we
log out again and press Ctrl-R to refresh, it appears we are still logged
in. Only after emptying caches, we are effectively logged out.

Same behaviour is not seen in Chrome and in Firefox. On Safari, we tested on
two different computers (although both iMacs).

I see no caching directives in the head section of the website. Might be
 worth considering.

 Hi,

I just created a clean Pootle installation on a new server and imported the
database from the old server. The config files are all the same. One would
expect that the installations would look the same, but on the new server, I
see _all_ languages when I'm not logged in, even the languages that are not
connected to any one of the projects. On the old server, I see _no_
languages, but instead an overview of the contributors.

Where does this difference come from?

Also, when logged in, I see a tab 'Terminology which is not there on the
old server. If I remember well, I made this tab disappear there, since we
don't use glossaries and don't want anyone to go there. Just can't remember
 how

Maybe you altered the template to don't show such link.

Re: [translate-pootle] Support for JSON ?

2014-08-25 Thread Leandro Regueiro
2014-08-25 12:24 GMT+02:00 Jason Pickering jason.p.picker...@gmail.com:

Hi there. I was not able to see in the release notes if Pootle provides
support for translation of JSON resources. It is possible of course to
convert these to PO format, and then translate them, but it complicates our
workflow a bit, as the source code is in JSON to begin with.

Hi.

Pootle doesn't provide support for JSON, but you can easily alter Pootle
code to make it work with JSON. But have in mind that it might not work
properly.

Another complication is that we have both Java property files as well as
JSON translation resources. I suppose it is not possible to have both types
of resources in a single translation project?

It is not possible to have a project that has more than one format. I
recommend to do a conversion of all the files to PO format before importing
them to Pootle.

Bye

Thanks in advance,
 Jason Pickering

Is there any documentation on how to set up a new project from scratch? The
 closest I've found is
 http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/stable-2.5.1/features/version_control.html

The closest I found was that one too.

But I have my new git project in repos/projName and copied the files to
translations/projName, but still pootle doesn't pick up on the files at all.

I assume translations/ is your VCS_DIRECTORY. Otherwise you have there
a problem.

I suggest you to follow the steps in the note in
http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/stable-2.5.1/features/version_control.html#example

Right now I have an en.po file and I want to add a blank fr.po so I can
start translating to french for example. But adding these files in the
translations folder just seems to do nothing, even if I tell pootle to
 rescan the project files.

Have I just missed a page in the docs or is this setup step just not
documented? This seems really hard to get started with.

Re: [translate-pootle] error setting up a new pootle database on postgres 9.3.2

in this order DID work - thanks to Leandro for that!

 fab production bootstrap
 fab production create_db

 fab production syncdb
 fab production migratedb
 fab production initdb
 fab production deploy_static
 fab production enable_site

Just a couple of thoughts on this - it would be great if the official docs
had that list of commands in it.

Having 3 different database steps with a not-obvious ordering is what was
tripping me up. Ideally there would just be one (e.g. syncdb) and then it
 would be less error-prone.

The steps with just one command to alter the DB are:

fab production bootstrap
fab production create_db
fab production update_config
fab production setup_db
fab production deploy_static
fab production enable_site

where setup_db calls syncdb, migratedb and initdb. But since
you had problems setting up the DB I provided you the slightly longer
list of commands to have a clearer input on where it was failing (in
case it failed).

Yes, 'pootle setup' is the same as 'python manage.py setup'.

Pootle is usually deployed using MySQL, and despite it is known that
some people tried to use PostgreSQL I am actually not sure if they
succeeded. Maybe it is worth considering using MySQL.

Leaving that aside, if you have problems running any commands it is a
good idea to avoid running a porcelain command like 'setup' and
instead run the several plumbing commands it actually masks. These
are the commands it hides when running for new deployments (for
upgrading existing deployments the commands are others):

 $ python manage.py syncdb --noinput
 $ python manage.py migrate
 $ python manage.py initdb

All these commands have Fabric equivalents (see below). Since you have
done previous tries you might have a broken DB, so before running the
previous commands you will probably have to wipe out all the tables in
 the DB.

This should work (assuming you have a clean DB):

 fab production bootstrap
 fab production create_db
 fab production update_config
 fab production syncdb
 fab production migratedb
 fab production initdb
 fab production deploy_static
 fab production enable_site

But we have never tried doing this with PostgreSQL so we can't tell
for sure if it will work.

$ python manage.py syncdb --noinput
$ python manage.py migrate
$ python manage.py initdb

All these commands have Fabric equivalents (see below). Since you have
done previous tries you might have a broken DB, so before running the
previous commands you will probably have to wipe out all the tables in
the DB.

This should work (assuming you have a clean DB):

fab production bootstrap
fab production create_db
fab production update_config
fab production syncdb
fab production migratedb
fab production initdb
fab production deploy_static
fab production enable_site

But we have never tried doing this with PostgreSQL so we can't tell
for sure if it will work.

[translate-pootle] Translator credits

2014-02-05 Thread Leandro Regueiro
Hi everybody,
in several times we have been requested to add some kind of translator
credits to files exported by Pootle.

In order to properly implement something we will need to know more
about what are you going to do with that data.

When we know what you want to do with the data, we can find a solution
that best meets the various requirements. It might not meet all, but
we hope would meet most peoples needs.

Thanks in advance.

 Hi,

 Thanks for asking for input.

We are indeed using that feature.

How would that contact form work? Would it be possible for users to easily
 report errors on individual strings?

Yes, translators will be able to easily report errors on individual
strings, but the reports are only sent using email. You will can set a
specific email address per project, and you can set as well a global
fallback address which will be used if the project has no custom email
set.

The behavior will be easy: the translators find and error and click on
the link to report the issue, then a dialog is opened with some data
already extracted from the current string (link to the unit, source
text, translation text) and where the translator can optionally
provide more data.

The first email is intended primarily to ask if there is any Pootle
deployment using this feature to forward the users to some web to
report the errors there, like a bugzilla, redmine,...

There is no easy way. Assuming you have enough permissions to reject
suggestions and that you mean a language in a given project, you can:

 * Open the overview for that project
 * Click on the Need translation count
 * Now you should be on the editor, so filter by Suggestions (bottom bar)
 * Now iterate over all the strings with suggestions and click on the
 reject button for each suggestion

Hum, we have about 700 suggestions or something for German. would this
mean Clicking 700 times? Could we clear it on the database instead?

Yes, means clicking 700 times (or even more if you count going to next strings).

Yes, you can remove the suggestions on the database IF you know what
you are doing.

 my setup).
Let me explain this in another way:

 Users: X, Y
 Projects: A, B, C, D

User X should see and have access to projects A and B. User X should never
 see projects C and D.
Likewise, user Y should see and have access to projects C and D. User Y
should never see projects A and B.

I'm able to fix the 'access' part, but not the 'see' part. Given my current
authorization settings, user X and Y
always see all projects on the dashboard, ie A, B, C and D when they sign
in, regardless of the fact if they
have access or not when they click through. I want to hide projects C and D
for user X and vice versa for user Y
on their respective dashboards. Is this possible?

It seems that the code that allows to do this is not yet merged. In
the currently released versions (and in master too) is impossible to
perform this. We are working to get this new code to be merged as soon
as possible and get it shipped with the next release around April.

Right now it is only possible to avoid users seeing all translation
projects but some where the users have permission to view. This of
course won't help you.

Our apologies.

As Arky said, this issue can be solved if you install a slightly older

I hope you did a backup just before trying to upgrade in order to

This is because of a bug in django-taggit 0.11.2. That bug is already

 if submit.submitter.user.username != 'nobody':

 https://github.com/translate/pootle/blob/2cce45820ddb4df2be1e308defef4f85d0a9c4c1/pootle/apps/pootle_store/models.py#L1627

 where submitter is None.

 Looking at the model,

 https://github.com/translate/pootle/blob/2cce45820ddb4df2be1e308defef4f85d0a9c4c1/pootle/apps/pootle_statistics/models.py#L67,
that seems to be OK datawise, but I'm surprised we're the only folks
 hitting.

Sadly, we're hitting it in frequent code paths like commiting to VCS or
 downloading zips.

 Any idea?

Not a lot. But I have some questions since I feel that the data
 provided is not enough:

 * Was the last translator authenticated? I mean last translator on the
file you tried to commit to VCS.
 * Can you provide a traceback, maybe from the logs?
 * Can you please set up the Raven Sentry client in order to get all
these errors and tracebacks on Sentry? That way you can just give us
access, then provide us with the proper link and we can see all the
 data we need.

 Axel

 PS:

 https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?resolution=---query_format=advancedcomponent=Verbatim
has various bugs boiling down to this, sparing the list with details.

Forgive me for my poor comprehension of english language. Can you
 please rephrase this?

 Also, bugs.locamotion.org is down :-(

Yes, we are already aware that bugs.locamotion.org. Our apologies. We
will try to get it back ASAP.

Re: [translate-pootle] Release and development process - would value your input

 Hi,

Julen and I met in Pretoria in January to discuss our release and
development process moving forward after 2.5.

I've finally managed to capture that discussion and have updated the
 release document here:
 http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/pootle/en/latest/developers/release.html

Would love you all to give that a read and check for any typos and errors.

In general the doc should give some clarity on:

1. When you can contribute and land things
2. When to expect a new release of Pootle
3. What you can expect when running from master.

However, we do need some input and help in these two thing:

1. When to branch when creating time-based releases.
2. What to name our branches.

 When to branch
 Options

1. As written now branch would happen at the end of the stabilising
month, i.e. as late as possible - thus forcing focus on the stabalisation
2. Branch early and port change to the branch as needed - allows master
to continue in rapid development
3. Branch just before invasive changes - kind of a compromise of the
above two.

 Your thoughts?

I think 1 is the best. It will minimize the port of changes between
master and other branches.

 Branch naming

1. Previous - simply 2.5.0 - I think this then confuses tags and
branches that have the same name
2. As written - 2.5.0-branch - I'm liking this less.
3. Suggested by Julen stable/2.5.0

I like 3. Or perhaps release/2.5.0.

I am not sure if I understand well this, and perhaps there is a very
good reason. The proposal is to have a master in which development has
place, and when the time comes new branches are created for each new
release, so what are the tags for? I assume that won't exist branches
like 2.5.0.1 and thus tags will be used.

Bye

 Your thoughts?
 Thanks for the input

I would imagine any number of the alternatives might also have
potential in in your screenshot challenge.

 2) Or an alternative approach that is probably no less technically
daunting. That is the idea of taking a screenshot in one language as
an SVG and then using tools to localize the SVG.

 Sounds like a maintenance nightmare!

I didn't say it was a good idea, just an idea :-)

I've been vaguely interested in SVG L10n for some time. We use a lot
of SVG images in Sugar for various reasons. In the screenshot
context, I agree that the process would essentially involve faking the
text in the screenshots, which may not produce good results on
re-insertngn the translations as the whitespace and wrapping would be
all wrong. I think this approach is far more suited to natively SVG
created images (for example, used as illustrations in some sort of
content) than for your particular challenge.

BTW, I'd love to see an svg2po / po2svg widget set in the Translate Toolkit
 :-)

I have seen translated SVG in several projects, but I never paid
attention to how they get translated. I know that in several projects
they convert them to PO to get translated, for example the Inkscape
tutorials which are written in SVG files.

Agreed, _HK actually would only make sense if there was a yue_HK locale.
I've seen very few of these and I often try to discourage them. From
what I heard of German and Swiss fellows, the difference is more is
 spoken language than written one.
It's a bit like the crazy situation in China/HK, spoken and written
Swiss German being a linguistically distinct language but because they
can't agree on a single written standard and because for historical
reasons Standard German is taught in all schools (in the German part),
they're quite capable of using de_DE.

Another common variant case is bn_IN and bn_BD.
I suspect that's a bit like the difference between Urdu and Hindi which
are structurally very similar but (simplyifing vastly) Hindi preferring
Sanskrit derived roots whereas Urdu prefers Persian/Arabic derived roots.

On the other hand, if history is anything to go by most emigrant
varieties of a language eventually drift to such an extent that a split
occurs. I'm no judge of how much South American Spanish has drifted but
from what I know of Portuguese _BR and _PT, I suspect it may have
drifted considerably, but not necessarily in obvious ways. The
vocabulary may remain the same but the semantics may have drifted and
the choice of preferred tenses/forms may also have drifted, both of
which are less clear than ordenador vs computador to the outsider but
may be very noticeable to the native.

Being practical, splitting up South American Spanish into a dozen
locales may be a little over the top though, I somehow can't see the
written language having drifted THAT much in each country. But how about
using some suffix for general South American Spanish?

 Just a thought.

I am not quite sure about how this really is, but if you search a
little you will find out that the most common locales for spanish are
es, es_AR, es_MX, es_ES in this order and then you may found es_VE,
es_CO or even es_CL which I only have seen once in my life for each of
this latest locales. The es_ES locale appears mainly when another
spanish locale is used for localization but it is also common to see
only es instead of es_ES.

Re: [translate-pootle] [Translate-devel] Terminator: web app for terminology management in a collaborative way with exporting to TBX standard format

 Hi.
More than a year and a half ago some people were talking about
terminology management and its use in Pootle in one of the Pootle
 mailing list
 (http://www.mail-archive.com/translate-pootle@lists.sourceforge.net/msg02662.html).
After exposing my ideas someone suggested me to write down my ideas
and the requiriments I was talking about in your wiki
 (http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/tbx#tbx_requirements_by_galician_translation_team_proxecto_trasno).

I waited almost a year to see if someone started developing a tool to
manage terminology, but no one did. So I developed my own using Django
in order to solve my particular requirements as they are in the
Translate Toolkit wiki. The code is available in
 http://gitorious.org/terminator
Firstly well done on getting going on this.

Now I'm not sure who is going to kick themselves first: you or Friedel.
Friedel has been working on extending Pootle's terminology management
aspects as part of a funded project with the IDRC.  I'm not sure what
the overlap is with your work.  But Friedel didn't announce this here,
bad Friedel.  Translate has also just landed a contract to build
terminology management for a local university, we'll base our work on
 Pootle.

I just found http://autshumato.sourceforge.net/TMS.html Are you
related with this app?

Right now this tool is functional. I didn't run it on a real server,
but I will appreciate if someone tries and tell me how it worked.
I think Friedel might be the first person to check out your work.
Maybe it has bugs I am not aware of. Of course the graphical design
can be enhanced. So I ask for help of people who want to help improve
this tool and integrate it with Pootle and Virtaal (and maybe other
 translation tools).

Integration with Pootle might be hard. We don't have any interface to
access external terminology.  Virtaal should be really easy if you have
some sort of API.  The terminology suggestions in Virtaal are all
plugins, so should be easy to add a plugin for Terminator.

If Pootle wants to integrate with external sources of Terminology, an
interface to access external terminology is the first step.

In my app I added a way to generate TBX files for a given target
language (being english the source language) on the fly just visiting
some specific URLs (or in another words using REST), so it should not
be hard to integrate with Virtaal's AutoTerm
(http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/virtaal/autoterm). I have not
tried it yet, since I don't know where to change the URLs that Virtaal
uses to get the terminology.

On the other hand, the terminology query for a given word in a given
language is not already implemented, but it is planned. I stopped it
because I have doubts about which was the better format to transfer
the results: JSON or TBX.

My idea was to start developing this app, and eventually get it into
the Translate Toolkit ecosystem, so a good integration with the other
apps is desirable in order to achieve this.

 Hello Leandro.

Just a small remark - there are at least two Terminators yet in software
 (both are TERMINal emulATORs).

 1. Gnome Terminator — https://launchpad.net/~gnome-terminator
 2. Terminator (cross-platform Java terminal emulator) —
 http://software.jessies.org/terminator/

Maybe you consider then to change name of your app to avoid 'multiplication
 of essences'? :)

About the app name. I tried at least a dozen of names, but all of them
were already used. I became tired and just chose one of them without
thinking a lot on it. The current name was chosen due to the
terminator robot, and the sunlight terminator (the line between day
and night), to take its background ideas of erase in one time for all
the terminology management chaos and the dawn of the new era of order
in the terminology front for we, the poor translators :) Sorry for my
english.

By the way, there at least another two or three terminology apps that
have the same name. Any name suggestion?

[translate-pootle] Terminator: web app for terminology management in a collaborative way with exporting to TBX standard format

2011-10-25 Thread Leandro Regueiro
Hi.
More than a year and a half ago some people were talking about
terminology management and its use in Pootle in one of the Pootle
mailing list
(http://www.mail-archive.com/translate-pootle@lists.sourceforge.net/msg02662.html).
After exposing my ideas someone suggested me to write down my ideas
and the requiriments I was talking about in your wiki
(http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/tbx#tbx_requirements_by_galician_translation_team_proxecto_trasno).

I waited almost a year to see if someone started developing a tool to
manage terminology, but no one did. So I developed my own using Django
in order to solve my particular requirements as they are in the
Translate Toolkit wiki. The code is available in
http://gitorious.org/terminator

Right now this tool is functional. I didn't run it on a real server,
but I will appreciate if someone tries and tell me how it worked.
Maybe it has bugs I am not aware of. Of course the graphical design
can be enhanced. So I ask for help of people who want to help improve
this tool and integrate it with Pootle and Virtaal (and maybe other
translation tools).

Bye,
Leandro Regueiro

I can't find any way to specify which translation memory files Virtaal
 will use.

In OmegaT you just only drop them in a folder within the project
folder and it works without setting nothing. In Lokalize you can
create translation memories importing PO and TMX files and then use
those translation memories. But I can't find how to make this in
 Virtaal. Can you help me?

 Hi Leandro

Virtaal moves all non-fuzzy strings to its own database when you save a
file, so the easiest might be to open the file, and save it. (You might
need to make a zero change to be able to save.)

Well, this is a way. I just tried and seems to work. Maybe you should
document it on the wiki. Thanks a lot.

IMHO you should put some way on the interface to specify a file (or
list of files) to Virtaal add them to the translation memory.

Oh yes, can I say I want this too?

Moreover, recently some bad translations ended up in my local TM, and I
didn't have any way to remove those unless going into the internals and
 editing the SQLite db file.

The current behaviour works fine and is simple and transparent for the
unexperienced user as it doesn't require any setup or special actions,
but translators need the flexibility to manage their TMs: have
predefined sets to use in certain translations (not all translations
need the same TMs), the ability to import a bunch of files, remove
 existing translations...

Virtaal's current implementation doesn't give any idea of the contents
of its TM, it's a blind bag where translations come from, and you can't
certainly know beforehand if you could trust them, because you can't
 control 100% what's in it.

So I would like to kindly ask to give priority to bugs 997[1] and
1416[2] for the next release after 0.7 if possible.

I totally agree with this. The ability to use several TM and select
which ones to use for the current file is very interesting. You may
put a TM menu for all this actions.

On the other hand you may being translating a file with a lot of bad
translations that you are currently fixing and the unfixed ones are
commited to the TM where they should never be. I think that new
translations in the current file should be pushed to a local TM, and
the TM should be created specifically by telling Virtaal which files
(po, XLIFF, TMX or whatever) should be pushed for the (existing or
new) TM.

By the way the ability to use several terminology glossaries and
select which ones to use for the current file is very interesting as
well.

If you want to import several files, you can look at the command line
 tool, build_tmdb.

It seems interesting but I don't know how can I install this tool or
find any documentation about it. It is not important since the other
 way seems to work.

build_tmdb comes bundled in the Translate Toolkit, so you already have
it installed on your system. I think you are interested on passing the
 Virtaal tm.db to the tool:

 $ build_tmdb -d ~/.virtaal/tm.db -s en -t gl files_to_import

It doesn't come in my version of Translate Toolkit. Right now I don't
need this, but thanks a lot any way.

But I was under the impression that Virtaal was using tmdb through
tmserver, and as I see tmserver has also a command line option (-f) for
importing files, so either way should be fine I think.

Thanks

 Julen.
