[VFB] Chili Pepper
I almost hate to post this I sent a friend a couple of peppers several weeks ago. I just got a CD from him with his last fishing trip. Said he quit counting trout after 135. All photos are different of at least a dozen trout with peppers in their mouths. Some large Cutts too. I will have to find out where he fished. He will be tying at the Sowbug if you would like to talk to him. Tony

Re: [VFB] Feathers from Wing barb sections???
Chuck, If you hold the feather to the light you well see a definite halo radiating out from the quill. This is best seen from the dull side of the feather. If the wing slip is tied in over this dull section the barbs will split. Tie in the wing feathers behind the dull area. Hold the wing slips over the hook shank, squeeze the feathers real tight between your thumb and first finger. Make a soft loop over the slips then make the second soft loop and pull STRAIGHT down while squeezing the slips together make a tight wrap, again pulling straight down. This should lock the wings in place. It is harder to write about it than to do it. If this is not clear let me know. Tony [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry about that.. Don, Glad you brought this up. O was visualizing what I so and this part just did not click as I do it subconseiouly and never gave it a thought. Tony DonO wrote: Chuck, Tony has the right method for you, but there is one detail that is harder to explain than it is to show, as he says. It's called the fingertip roll. How do you get the thread around the feathers and hook (the soft loops) while you're pinching them? The trick is to roll the tips of your fingers back, exosing the area you want to make the wraps around. Then make your loose wraps- 2 to 3 are sufficient. Then roll your fingertips back to where the thread loops are sandwiched along with the feather tips. Now pull straight down, forcing the thread to accordion the feather barbs into a squashed stack, 2 feathers side by side. Wellah! Now you have stacked wings, which of course, Tony invented. Re-marry different colors from different birds or dyed colors, and you get salmonfly married wings. Deb invented these. Thanks to DonO, tho, for inventing flight-feathers in the first place. Re: [VFB] Dying Feathers
You have to wash the raw feather to remove the oils. I used Joy dish soap. I also had a photo darkroom and used a few drops of Photo Flow in the wash water before dying and in the dye. This made the dye flow evenly on the wet material. There is another way that you can dye single feathers in a micro wave. Talk to MaMa first. I never did it so I don't remember the details. I would have to look it up and am not up to it now. If my memory is right, it was as simple as laying a feather on something that was the color you want and zapping it. I am sure someone will chime in. This came from one of the OLD Flytyer mags. Tony [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Ashley, Thanks.. That's what I was doing yesterday. Rit won't turn out as nice as Veniard's (an acid dye) but it's a quick and easy thing for me. I dyed some fine Ostrich black yesterday with the liquid Rit. I used a large aluminum pan on the stove with water, salt and vinegar. I was told by a good friend that the secret to dying was to use half water and half vinegar (Rit said to use salt so I used it also). It was the easiest dye job I've done yet. The feathers held all the black and took less than 30 seconds to rinse clear. I've been told black is one of the hardest colors to dye. I did have to leave the feathers in for almost an hour. Be careful not to burn the feathers, I really don't think the water has to be HOT. I turned mine completely off after half an hour and let them sit in it while it cooled. I don't know if I did this right but it worked for me and the black isn't rubbing off on my fingers or in water so I'm happy. I'm using these for Classic salmon flies so if they weren't perfect they would've hit the scrap pile. Remember to first wet your feathers with water before you immerse them in the dye bath if they're oily wash them in a gentle dish soap first (dawn or ivory). They need to be wet already to absorb the dye evenly. There is a gentleman on the list that works with dyes and materials for a living hopefully he will chime in. I experiment a lot... I use egg dye, koolaid and hair dyes but it's still experimental I don't know a lot about dying. It works or it doesn't. :) I've used Rit several times though. I hope this helped you. There is a web site on mixing Rit dyes also, check out google. Re: [VFB] Tony, flies?
The chenille for the Chili Pepper is made by Danville. It is called Copper Tinsel Chenille. It is not Estaze . I have used Root Beer Estaze for other type flies. I like the stuff. Wapsi, Spirit River and other fly companies package the Chenille on cards and it is sold at flyshops. I buy mine in a 144' skein from a local flyshop. I would think that Byard can get it The original Chenille was Copper and Pearl mixed. That was made up specially for my friend Bob Root who tied the first Pepper. It was tied as a joke for me. Long story that I might post some other time. That Chenille is not available as far as I know. I started tying with the Copper Chenille and added a gold bead. This is my version of the original. I had the first thing as I called it on my box for months before Bob talked me into using it. The thing took 13 trout on a row before breaking off. I became a believer. This is still my Go To Fly when all else fails. It has seldom failed me. I have taken about all types of cold and warm water species on it . The Pepper is nothing more than a Copper Woolly Bugger. One thing that I think is important is the marabou used in the tail. The original came from a bargain bin of mis-dyed marabou. Wapsi now has marabou dyed to the right color. It is called Burnt Orange. That is about it for now. I am still a bit under the weather and can't sit for very long. To all that sent me well wishes on or off list, I will reply to you all when I am up to sitting at the computer. Dot don't like me getting on the river by myself so I called a young couple that I got started flyfishing this spring. They said they would be at the house in an hour or so. I went out the back and noticed the river had come up some, looks like they had released some water and it was just getting to my house. I went down to the dock to run the outboard before they got here. Needless to say it got contrary.. It had not been run in about five weeks. It had started to cloud over again. The clouds, river and the outboard should of been an omen. Got it squared away before they got to the house. We suited up and got on our way. Neither of them had caught a trout yet. We went up to Tucker Shoals, water was not too high to wade there. In the meantime it had clouded over real heavy and looks like more rain headed our way. We got to Tucker headed the boat to the bank and stepped out. I got them situated on a seam and I headed down a ways on the bank. As I started to get in position to cast , the water that was knee deep, I stubbed a rock with my boot , lost my balance and fell. My legs came up from the air trapped in my waders. my butt was on the rocks but I could not get my legs down in order to get up. Art's wife came to my rescue but by that time water had come in from the top of my chest waders. needless to say, I had no control on the urge. Now I was soaked from the neck down to my toes. I thought I could fish for a while but after a dozen casts I decided I had to get back to the house. It is about a half mile. down river. Got home and took a hot shower. Got my waders turned inside out and hanging. I have not made up my mind yet if I will use my other pair if waders and go back out. I left Art and his wife at Tucker and have to go back up there to pick them up later. I would like to get some fishing in today, I will not be able to get on the river for a few weeks. By that time winter will be set in pretty good so today is fish or not. Tony

Re: [VFB] Broken Renzetti thumb screw
Bill, I have made several replacements. If I can find the disk I have the photos on, I will send you a photo. Maybe someone on the list I made them for might have a shot handy. I turned a piece of aluminum stock to 7/8 X3/8 thick. Drilled a hole on the back side to press in a allen head screw. Not all the jaws have the same size screws. The outer part of the screw head is serrated. this gives you a press fit. On the outer side, I cut a 3/8 bevel on the outer edge. Drilled and tapped a 8/32 hole on the bevel. This is for the lever. The lever is made from a piece of rosewood turned like a oval barrel, 3/8x 1 1/4 drilled out for a 8/32 screw. The 8/32 screw goes through the hole and screws into aluminum to hold the rosewood lever. The lever now sits out at an angle. Makes a nice lever to tighten the jaws. You might also consider a crank lever handle. Some list members have them too. Tony P.S. I am not making any at this time. William Andreas wrote: Thanks, Jimmy. Joyce, I started making ants abs beetles that way about 15 years ago. Netcraft used to sell kits with the floss, Acetone, some patterns and instructions. [VFB] Fishing report,Tuesday afternoon
I have been working on getting a bamboo rod finished and needed a break, been working with a student I am teaching to make rods. We have been hitting it pretty hard for several days. I told my student we would take a break and go fishing. It was to get up into the 80's, pretty warm for November. I wanted to hit Crooked Creek one more time before winter sets in. We got on the creek about two in the afternoon. The beavers had built a dam and the area I like to fish was flooded. Water that is normally to my knees was up to my waist. I tied on a sz 16 rusty brown bugger type fly that was given to me to try. It is a takeoff in the Chili Pepper. Mark tied on a surface popper. Mark connected on about his second cast. It was a 8 smallmouth. I started connecting on my third or fourth cast. My first fish was a 6 smallmouth. Got into a lot of bluegills and other types of bream as they are called here. I tried to keep count but lost count after 50 fish. I did catch a couple more smallmouths, one about 12. Mark was doing well on the popper, he caught a bunch of bream and a largemouth about 1 1/2 pounds. I had a good fish on and broke off the fly I was fishing with. It was the only one I had like it. I tied on a sz 14 soft hackle and it did not do as well as the fly I had on before. I did not have any small Chili Peppers with me. If I had, I would of used it. Things started to slow down in that spot so we decided to move up the creek to another hole that holds some big carp. Mark handed me a red foam popper and told me to give it a try. That popper was dynamite. Hooked up on the first cast. It has been a while since I have fished poppers and this was a real treat. I can't tell you how much fun it was. There was a take on about every cast. Some were small fish that would grab the tail and pull the popper under the surface. I did catch a couple more smallmouths in the 8 range. We saw a number of large Carp but I did not try for them. Mark was trying to get them to take a large Chili Pepper but no luck. The afternoon was getting short of light and we decided to head back to where the truck was parked. Fished on down the creek picking a few fish. All told, I know I hit close to a hundred fish that included a few Roach. Some gills were as big as my hand and some were as small as 4 but a fish is a fish. LOL That was a good way to end the season on Crooked Creek, winter will be here soon and Crooked Creek will be in it's winter sleep. There will be plenty of trout fishing on the White should we have a mild winter. Tony

Re: Nor-bloc bobbin was: [VFB] Seeking vise info...
Henk, You must have an older bobbin then my old bobbin. The one I have does not have a bolt, it is quick release and a pleasure to use. You explained the flip-flop like it should be said. It is the spool on the auto hub that might have to be flippid. The old spools I have will not fit the new auto hub and the new spools are too loose on the old auto hub. I have to keep them separated so I don't put the wrong color thread on the spool I don't intend to use. I asked Norm is he might still have any old hubs around, I would be more than glad to buy them. He had none at all. On the three new bobbins I have, the weight of the loaded bobbin will extend the thread at least 14 to 18 before it will stop. I tried the wraps around the legs, still too much thread has to be pulled out to pre load. Keeping the spool pre loaded by not letting the thread retract seems to work the best for me. I have it down pat now and don't worry about it anymore. This does not make it handy to use with a standard vise. Tony Henk Verhaar wrote: On 31 Oct, 2005, at 23:11, Larry Johnson wrote: Flip-flop the spool in the bobbin. It is spring-loaded, but only works one direction. See if that will cause it give you the automatic feature you are looking for... Flipping the spool in the bobbin won't work, you need to flip the outer spool on the auto-hub if the thread is wound the wrong way. However, I suspect that what he meant was not that the spool rotated the wrong way, but rather that the hub doesn't have enough tension to stay put. This is a feature (I would say a major flaw) of the new Norbobbins (the ones with quick release hubs). The old ones (with a bolt locking the hub in the frame) have adequate tension. Norm sez that he deliberately designed the new ones with less tension, because he had so many hubs returned with broken springs. A workaround, which Norm suggest himself also, with the new bobbins is to wrap the thread once or twice around one of the legs of the frame. Still doesn't make the thing work like the old ones, but it will usually stay put. I've since moved on to an Ekich automatic bobbin -- takes standard spools and works beautifully. I wish I had a dozen of the old automatic bobbins, The spring has been changed and the new bobbins have to be pre- loaded and kept that way unless you want to pull out a foot of thread each time you start a fly. Joyce uses a hackle pliers , Larry uses the button on the post, I find that is more to my liking than any other methods I have used. The old bobbins pre loaded with just a short pull on the thread, I really value the one old bobbin I still own. Once you get used to the new bobbins, you find you can cope with them real well. It now it is automatic for me to hold the spool on my palm and twist the thread on the post button to keep the bobbin pre loaded. Check the spool as Larry mentioned, you night have it on backwards. You still have to pre load the spool. Give Norm a call, he will explain it all to you. Reason for changing springs, old springs breaking. I just tied two dozen Chili peppers on my Norlander this morning. I use the Norlander for Bugger type flies when I tie more than just a couple. For most of my other tying, I prefer my Barracuda Jr. Tony Curtis Watts wrote: Larry I just recieved a new Nor-vise but am having trouble getting the automatic bobbin to stay up. is there a trick to wind the thread? Larry Johnson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Nick: I tie on a NorVise. It is a true rotary vise. I love everything about it. Take a look at the midge jaws, and the cam lever option. You have to transfer the thread/material. This is a negative, but I sure like tying with it. Larry Johnson Springville, Utah [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/31/2005 1:00 PM Folks with vises... And it sure is a great vise for its price. Though after using it for nearly a year now and after the price factor isn't smoothing out anymore these, once really minor, drawbacks have grown into really annoying ones. I'm looking for something new, but I don't know what I'm looking for. Of course I've been having my eyes on a few ones, so I do know what I'm looking AT... but I don't see any chances to try something out before buying. So, men and women (and others) with vises: What do you think about YOUR OWN vise(s)? You're the ones using them and since you still do, there must be a reason for it, right? I'd like to know both drawbacks and advantages. All info is appreciated. If you're sitting on personal experience of the Griffin Montana Mongoose, that info will be EXTRA appreciated. But, as said, I'd like as much as I can get... regarding everyone's vise. The GMM isn't the only one I consider. Re: [VFB] Building a tying Desk/ Center
Pete, I have made several tying stations, I have still have to find the perfect one. One thing that I have done on all of them is make the tool rack to fit the tools I use. The holes in the rack will only take the tool it is made for. The hole is made to fit a certain tool and that tool will always go in the same place on the rack. The holes might be drilled with two different size drill bits to accommodate a tool. The holes for my scissors have a smaller hole drilled first followed by a larger hole. The point goes into the smaller end while the larger part of the blades go in the larger upper part. This keeps the tools upright in their places. The spools of wire are cocked at an angle towards me to make them easy to remove from the pegs. Just a few things I do with my tying stations. Tony Peter Gramp wrote: Hi, everyone- It's cold, frost on the ground, and the water is starting to be too chilly even for neoprene waders... SO! Time for some winter prep for the upcoming season. I was thinking of building a corner- fit reloading desk, of sorts, but used as a tying bench and storage cabinet. The question is: What are some of the nice perks that you have in, on, or around your tying bench that would make for a better bench? I don't know if this is list- worthy, but until I hear otherwise, I'm guessing it's fine... I know this was a thread previously, and I;m sure there are others who could make use of this information. Tying tools and equipment are a given (vise, bobbin, etc) but I was curious of the rest of it (magnetic edges to keep hooks from the floor, a clothesline of twine for drying flies, built-in electric socket for lighting, etc) Thanks in advance, and tight wraps, Pete -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. When hitched in the proper place (behind the collar) they float and wake like a champ. On this trip I caught my first dry fly steelies with a spey rod, what a thrill to see the fly disappear in a swirl. I used a natural color one during the day and a black one in the evening. I also use an Estaz Egg, which is nothing more than Estaz in steelhead colors (chart, pink, white, orange) palmered up a hook. I mix mine up too by adding a gold beadhead to all those patterns as well as krystal flash tails as well. I'm in the Steelhead Swap and am tying a concept type fly. I also found an idea in an old magazine I was going through -- 'steelhead' a nymph pattern. Here's what ya do -- take a staple pattern - ie a Pheasant Tail Nymph. Tie it as you normally would, until you get to the thorax. At that point, mix it up - I take chart. estaz and make THAT the thorax. Finish as normal. That combo has probably been my No.1 goto fly since I've tried it. Works just as good or better than the original PTN's on the stream. That pretty much describes my flybox for steelhead. Re: [VFB] Tying materials storage.
I put the materials in a ziplock bag for the fly I will be tying. I only take what I need to tie each fly. Normally I tie three to four different flies. That means that I carry three to four ziplock bags with just enough materials to tie about a dozen of each fly. The ziplock bags are marked on the outside with a marking pen for the fly the materials will tie. I have built a tying station that will fit in a aluminum camera case that hold all the tools I need and the bobbins with thread. All of this stays on the tying station. I do remove the vise and lay it flat on the tying station. The ziplock bags are laid on top of the vise. My battery powered tying light is in the case too. This makes a neat compact traveling kit and only takes me a couple of minuets to set up. Over the years I learned to carry only what I need to tie the flies that I will be doing demo tying on. What if I might be asked to tie a fly that I had not planned on tying, I just borrow what I need from the guy that uses a hand truck to carry in his tying materials. LOL Tony KEITH PASSANT wrote: OK guys n gals fess up. When you travel to tie at shows or go to a camp or such and take materials with you how do you store your kit for travel? [VFB] Al's, Fly
I posted this on July 7. This has been a very productive fly for me this year. Most of my fishing has been with the Chili Pepper and Al's fly this season. A couple of weeks ago I finally fished my 1 wt bamboo rod I made. Used a sz 16 Al's fly for the whole time I was out. Caught 46 fish. All were warm water fish from Crooked Creek. Most were bluegills about the size of my hand. Did get a smallmouth about 6 long. On an earlier fishing trip to CC, I hooked a Carp on a sz 12 Al's fly, it straightened out the hook. I just sent some shots to Joyce. If someone would like to post the photos on their website, I would be glad to send then along. Maybe Byard will chime in. Tony What I refer to as Al's Fly is really a modified Winter Fly. Al calls it a Winter Fly B Here is the way I tie it Hook: Scud sz 12, 14 Head: Black brass bead size for hook. Weight: Just enough lead wire to fit in the bead recess Thread: Black Tail: Short strands of Pheasant tail Rib: Fine copper wire Body: Several fibers of pheasant tail wrapped to the thorax. Wing Case: Black crow wing fibers Thorax: Peacock herl Legs: A couple of soft black hen fibers. I use the ones from the JV hens Slip bead on the hook, wrap lead wire. Attach black thread, wrap the shank down the bend a bit Tie in tail fibers, tie in rib wire and body fibers. Wrap body fibers to the thorax. Wrap rib, about 4 to 5 turns. Tie off at thorax, Tie in wing case fibers . Tie in peacock herl and wrap thorax. Tie in three leg fibers on each side. This can be done by taking a hen feather and cutting out the tip of the feather leaving a V in the top. Then strip off all the barbs leaving three barbs on each side where the V is. The barbs and the stem now will form a Y Tie in the stem right behind the bead leaving the three barbs on each side of the thorax. Pull the wing case over the thorax leaving the legs extended. Tie off the wing case right behind the bead head. Whip finish. Add some head cement to the wing case and the whip finish. Tony

[VFB] Fishing report 1 wt bamboo rod
I posted this on the rodmakers list last night. Last year when I asked about a taper for a 1 wt bamboo rod I kind of got some flack. With the help of a list member we came up with a 1 wt taper based on the Sir D. It is a 6'3 true 1 wt bamboo rod. It was first cast at the SRG last year and got favorable comments. I also had it at the Catskill Gathering last month and also receive favorable comments. I decided to get out and fish it this evening . Headed to Crooked Creek with Mark Romaro from Rosco N.Y. and Fred Dupre from Dallas. Fred had the five wt I made for him this past July. I had not cast the 1 wt on water so this would be the first time to do it. Crooked Creek is my fun place to fish. Lots of bluegill and smallmouths along with some big carp. I tied on a sz 16 emerger and that same fly was used for the full time we were out. I got a hookup on the third cast. It was a nice palm size gill. Then hooked up with a 6 roach. The rod met all of my expectations and cleared some of the doubts I might of had about such a light rod. I was making easy 30' + casts when I needed to. Much over that I could not make a good hook set. Most of the fish caught and released were palm size gills with a few more roach and a shiner or two. I did catch one small (6) smallmouth Total of 46 fish on the 1 wt. Just before leaving I handed the 1 wt to Fred. He really liked the rod. He had handed me the 5 wt so I made a cast and hooked up with a palm size gill on the first cast. Then Mark cast the 1 wt and told me he was kind if concerned about casting such a light rod. That concern went away after the first few casts. Needless to say, I am more than pleased with the rod and the way it handles the palm size gills. This is the prototype, I have made four for clients and they are all pleased with them. One client fished his 1 wt in Wyoming for native brook trout, he was real happy with it. Fred was fishing for Smallmouths with a large fly. He got six large smallmouths. Mark got about a dozen Gills. Arkansas Tony

Jim, I will ask them about doing it. Tony Jim Collins wrote: Hi Tony, Those blanks sound awesome! I look forward to when they will be available commercially. Re: [VFB] New Rods
Jim, I went by there today and talked to Ray about doing the Common Cents thing. I took the info you sent and left it to Ray for copying. I also took my 1 wt line with me and my bamboo 1 wt rod. I wanted Ray to cast it and compare it with the two rods we have been casting. I suggested trying the 1 wt on the two rods we had been casting. We both decided that each rod would cast a 1, 2 and 3 wt line equally well. That would make these rods a multi line wt rod. Let's see what the Common Cents setup says. Ray will get a board set up as soon he can get to it. We played with the two rods too long, I had to leave and Ray did not get to cast my 1 wt bamboo rod. Will take it by for him to cast tomorrow. I put in my order for the 7'6 blank, I just have to have one. Tony Jim Collins wrote: Hi Tony, Those blanks sound awesome! I look forward to when they will be available commercially. [VFB] New Rods
With Byard's permission I will post this, Byard might be carrying these rods at Line's end. I wrote this post before I went on my trip four weeks ago. Byard was also gone at that time so I waited till I could talk to him about posting. I do some rod casting for a local rod company that makes their own blanks. Dorber has been mentioned on this list at times by list members that have purchased rods and blanks from them. I was so enthused, I just have to tell someone about these rods. These rods are made from a special woven graphite that is very strong and has a checkerboard pattern They are beautiful. I picked up the 4 wt and could not believe how light it was, Just made a flip to get some line out and it shot all the line I had pulled off the reel. This was into a brisk wind. When I finally got to really casting it I was astounded, with a good flip, I shot out over 60' of line. No effort at all . Casting this rod was a total pleasure. I have not cast another rod like it. It cast like bamboo, with a feel of graphite. I really don't know any other way to say how it feels. It is one of the lightest 4 wt rods I have ever cast. Then I picked up the 2 wt. On the 2 wt, the guides were just taped on as was the grip and reel seat. The rod was almost nothing in my hand as to weight. When I made the first flip, I knew they had another winner. A person has to cast this rod to believe what it will do. I personally think these rods will cast a 1 wt lower and a 1 wt higher lines with no problem at all. I did not have time to check this out, Ray will do it while I am gone. I will try it after I get back next month. I will also cast the 3 and 5 wt versions. These rods are still in the experimental stage and none are for sale at this time. I have over 50 rods and some blanks sitting around to be wrapped but I will be buying one of the first 4 wt blanks when they start selling them. Then I will get a 2 wt. I still can not believe how light these rods are and how effortless they cast. Tony Since I wrote the above I was back yesterday and today doing some more casting on some new prototypes A 7' 3 wt and a 7.5' 2 wt that might be a 3/2 wt. My casting style works better with a 3 wt on the 7'.6 and 2 wt on the 7'. We weighed the rods today, the 7' 6 weighed 1.8 oz and the 7' weighed 1.6 oz. That is with the plastic wrap on the grip and reel seat that weighs 1 oz. These rods are made with a new graphite that is called Ultra Weave. These rods are about as crush proof as you can get. I put all my weight standing on the blank rolling it under my feet and no damage. I am still amazed at these rods. I have no financial connection other they give me a break on rod stuff I buy. The big thrill came yesterday when Ray said he had a 4 wt blank for me. I can't wait till I can fish it. More on that after I get on the river with it. These rods are not for sale yet, they should be soon. There is a good chance you will be able to get them at Line's End. Tony
Re: [VFB] Fly Proportions
Chuck, If you should come across another copy someplace, Please pick it up for me. I missed getting a copy. Thanks, Tony Chuck Alexander wrote: Folks: I showed a cpl ppl here my flies, and they both told me that one of the main things to work on are fly proportions.. Just so happened that I bought the Sept 2005 edition of Flyfisherman Magazine (HOPE that ain't considered advertising for them, just telling what I found).. Anyway, it came with an extra 36 page Booklet that has 21 fly patterns, but the first two pages are on Fly Proportions, and have pics, and measurements on a Nymph and a Dry Fly.. So if anybody else is new here, and having these same problems, or don't know what the proportions should be, this might help you, Chuck -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Check the recycle bin, About two months ago, my in box file just disappeared. I checked the recycle bin and found a big file there. Restored it and my in Box came back. Don't know if that will help.
