Re: [videoblogging] Unbiased Opinion Of Current Best Overall Video Aggegator
Since I use videoblogs differently than Kelly I'll weigh in too. I use iTunes for podcasts because I transfer those to my ipod for listening and because I never go back to read/write comments on the podcasts I listen to. With videos iTunes doesn't work at all for me. There's no way to et back to the blog etry to read/write comments. I use the RSS reader that's built into my browser. I read whatever text is included in each blog entry and if it sounds interesting I'll click through to the blog entry and view the video in my browser. My perfect RSS reader is one that is as tightly integrated with my browser as possible. - Andreas On Wed, 05 Apr 2006 08:41:18 +0200, Kelly Skoty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm not saying that it's the best over all other choices ... but the best video aggregator _for me_ is iTunes ... It's Wednesday a.m. and its already been a very long week for a lot of us. I understand that there have been technical issues with some of the 3rd-party services that many of us here have tried to use. All we want to do is be included in the list of participants and see what others are contributing to the event. Thankfully, there's no more technical nonsense for anyone to deal with. There is a system at: http://xicast.com/vlogweek2006/add.asp Add your video blog's URL, RSS feed and name and you're done. Every 30 minutes it will check to see if you have added a new post. If it finds one, it will add it to the master list. There are links there for you to monitor as well as an RSS feed for you to point your feed reader to. [videoblogging] Re: A vlogmap observation...
You're right, I used to think that multiple posts per week would have an effect on vlogmap, but it doesn't seem to (there's been no considerable change during vlog week so far). Although I hadn't posted any Kitkast stuff in three weeks (before vlog week) it's true that my numbers were staying constant and even increasing... so although it looks weird, I guess with people always looking for new content, the stats are pretty constant! One thing I find strange is when someone removes their feed from the public eye. Apparently there is an option in Feedburner that allows you to hide your stats from people (therefore removing it from vlogmap). Sometimes you see people's stats on vlogmap just hanging there while other stats keep going. I'm sure lots of people like to end their public stats on a high note before going to look for sponsorship! [videoblogging] Re: A vlogmap observation...
If most of your subscribers are using iTunes you are more likely to loose subscribers if you post more often. Because iTunes will automatically unsubscribe a feed if you don't watch or listen to 5 episodes in a row. So if you start posting everyday, from say, posting much less often than that, you're likely to start losing subscribers after awhile. This is what happened to me over my rerun month in February when I was posting every day--my subscriptions fell by about 30%. I knew about the iTunes thing before, so it wasn't a big surprise. The interesting thing is that my downloads went up over that period, so I didn't feel as bad about losing subscriptions. So just because someone is subscribed doesn't mean that they are actually watching. I actually think that it's more likely that someone is watching if they download manually. Here is another thing, if you have a lot of subscribers, and you stop posting for a while you're very likely to keep most of them over time. Why? Because if you never get anything from a feed how often are you likely to even think about it to unsubscribe from it? I probably have several dead subscriptions that I am subscribed to right now that I've never bothered to remove. Bill Streeter LO-FI SAINT LOUIS www.lofistl.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Casey McKinnon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You're right, I used to think that multiple posts per week would have an effect on vlogmap, but it doesn't seem to (there's been no considerable change during vlog week so far). [videoblogging] HDD for Video Blogging?
We're thinking about starting a vlog. I read on Gizmodo the other day about Sony coming out with an HDD Handycam (the DCR-SR100). After reading about that, I also discovered the JVC already has a couple on the market (the Everio G Series). Do any of you currently use an HDD camcorder? What are the advantages? The cameras seem a little more expensive, but we wouldn't need to invest in any tapes, discs, or any other media, so it seems pretty appealing and ideal for doing a vlog. What do you think? [videoblogging] Re: HDD for Video Blogging?
I tend to be of the opinion that HD is just a little bit of overkill for a video blog. Mostly because it's very very unlikely that you would ever post full resolution HD footage on the internet--at least anytime soon. Given the additional resources needed for a HD workflow with the end result being just 320x240 highly compressed seems like a waste to me. HD is more than just an investment in a camera. Your editing system, hardware and software needs to be up to snuff to handle it as you'll use more hard drive space and processing power in handling HD. But that's just my opinion. Bill, Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. However, HDD stands for Hard Disc Drive, not High Definition (actually, it is pretty confusing. They really should have made more of a differentiation between those two). With an HDD camcorder it's my understanding that you you don't need any tapes or discs or any other media to record onto. The camcorder houses a hard drive and you just record whenever and wherever and then plug the camera direct into the computer to upload your footage. I think HDD camcorders are available in both HD and SD (though maybe only SD right now?). --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I tend to be of the opinion that HD is just a little bit of overkill for a video blog. You know after I posted this I was wondering if this was what you were talking about. DOH!! I've heard that if you are a Mac user the HDD cams are kind of a pain in the arse to work with. But I like the idea of a tapeless workflow. I know that a lot of vloggers have been using a tapeless workflow for a while already using cameras that write to flash memory cards. So yeah HDD cams would seem to make some sense for vlogging. [videoblogging] Thursday: talking about my new book at the Harvard Berkman Center
Hi everyone, At 7pm on Thursday, April 6, I'm going to be giving a preview of my new book, From the Ground Up: Evolution of the Telecentre Movement, at the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet Society. Every Thursday, a group of local bloggers get together to discuss Internet issues, and I'll be talking about the book for this week's meeting. The book, edited by me and Mark Surman of Telecentre.org, explores the diversity of public computing initiatives around the world, examining the common visions and goals that unite them. It's intended to inspire technology activists to realize that they're part of a worldwide movement to bridge the digital divide, rather than working in isolation. The USA chapter focuses on Lowell Telecommunications Corporation in Lowell, MA, and includes quotes from our fellow vlogger Randy Mann. The book will be distributed this spring by IDRC.ca in Canada, but for now you can review a very large PDF version (It's around 10 megabytes - a necessary evil given the hundreds of photographs in the book.) An accessible HTML version will be made available when IDRC begins distributing the book. http://www.andycarvin.com/from-the-ground-up.pdf I've also posted screen shots from the book on my blog: http://www.andycarvin.com permalink: http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/2006/04/talking_about_my_new.html If you happen to be in the Boston area, please feel free to join us Thursday evening at Berkman. It'll take place at 7 PM at Baker House, 1587 Massachusetts Ave. in Cambridge, north of Harvard Square. Hope to see some of you there! thanks, andy -- -- Andy Carvin acarvin (at) edc . org andycarvin (at) yahoo . com http://www.digitaldivide.net http://www.andycarvin.com -- Yahoo! [videoblogging] Fourth Screen Festival
Hello vlogland! I am working on a project that needs your work! The idea is really, to help generate excitement and support for open tools and useful projects which expand how we can use our cell phones. AND There's monetary prizes and the winning works will be hosted online for a year. This is an independent festival, in other words, not funded by a major network looking for free content. Check it out: http://www.the4thscreen.net How does this relate to videobloggers? Well, we are the ones who are driving the open source and community potentials of independent video creation and distribution. Mobile phone video distribution should not be left to major media corporations to exploit. I look forward to seeing the amazing energy of this community continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible. Call for work http://www.the4thscreen.net/call_for_work4106.php Press Release http://www.thefourthscreen.net/press_release4106.php The site is also starting a blog where we can discuss the ideas and potentials for mobile media innovations. -- Mica Scalin What's cooking in The PAN?http://www.thepan.org --Hello? http://www.micawave.tv http://www.micascalin.net SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use YAHOO! Hello,I'd need to actually read the contract, but I have a feeling that Adam Curry is using a bit of word play to mislead people. Let me explain. While technically, they don't own the content, it has the effect that they own the content. If PodShow gets exclusive rights to do anything they want with your content forever, and you cannot use your content any more in any way, then, for all intents and purposes, they own your content. Although technically speaking, they don't own it... they just have a certain kind of contract which gives them all the legal rights that they would have if they owned it... and that same contact stripped you of virtuall all the legal rights you had as owner. Making a statement like that means nothing. What matters is what the contract says, and he's not sharing their standard contract, so all we can do is guess (and guessing is not in Podshow's favour). I suspect what Charles says is true. That PodShow participants are not signing over ownership, but only irrevocable and perpetual broadcasting rights (and probably a handful of other vital rights). So Curry can sit down and say we don't own their content and be technically correct, he will be incorrect in the eyes of most people (when people say PodShow owns the content they equate ownership rights with the irrevocable, perpetual broadcasting rights). If this is the truth then Curry is not only behaving unethucally, he's also being a moron. But Curry won't disclose the actual wording of the contracts so we can't know the truth. Coincidentally that also makes him a moron. :o) -- Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen URL: http://www.solitude.dk/ Commentary on media, communication, culture and technology. Yahoo! that's probably what ot comes down to, yes.do they at least give some sort of royalties if podshow profits from your content?i think audio 'talk show' type content can often become irrelevent after some time passes whereas video is *more likely* to maintain a higer value as time passes. how many people go back and listen to a podcast from a year ago? unless these independent shows include quality music, live performances etc or is not entertainment content, then people would generally have an interest in podcast archives but for those interested in a podshow network, its mostly about entertainment and usually in the form of radio talk shows. so, maybe it doesnt fucking matter who has the rights in actuality and only good for a debate on what is fair to content creators etc. again, video is different in my mind. its possible you have YOU as a visual and that is something you dont nec want to have put out there and remixed and put out of context without your consent (and any other person that is captured). there's my besides the point piece of babble. ;)sullOn 4/5/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello,I'd need to actually read the contract, but I have a feeling that Adam Curry is using a bit of word play to mislead people. I would like to see Keith and the Girl interview Adam Curry about this, but Curry would be an idiot if he did an interview with them. Although they are entertaining, they are also set in their beliefs and they may just gang up on him. In the end, an interview like that would be about as entertaining as CNN's Crossfire and wouldn't really do much to change public opinion on either side. When you're a businessman trying to promote a product, you choose to do interviews with people who will not give you a negative image. Perhaps this is what he was doing with Geek Brief. [videoblogging] Re: Adam Curry on GeekBrief.tv
I gotta say that all this discussion about Podshow and their alleged contract seems like a lot to do about nothing. First of all no one knows if what was read was actually a Podshow contract, and second of all it takes two to do a deal. If someone offers you a contract (or agreement) you are under no obligation to sign it. You can even take a contract, read it, point out what you find objectionable and offer an alternative to try to come to some understanding on those terms before you agree to sign. It's not that complicated, and it's done all the time by people doing all kinds of business. Contracts can be very fluid things right up until the time they're signed. And often the first draft of a contract looks very different than the final. Parties often put their strongest position out first with at least a few clauses that they will cede if necessary. Giving over exclusive rights to your work (for at least a limited time) is pretty standard for entertainment contracts, as are non-compete clauses etc. And it's up to the person signing the contract to make sure that what they will be getting in exchange for giving up these rights is worth it to them. And again if someone offers you a contract like this and you don't think it's favorable to you--DON'T SIGN IT! [videoblogging] need your help saying the words Spot Jill Carroll!
Hi everyone, I've got a really odd favor to ask. I'm working on a vlog about my trip to Boston's Logan airport on Sunday to see the arrival of former Iraq hostage Jill Carroll. As some of you may have heard, Carroll evaded the media and whisked away in a limo, leaving the media to do nothing except scratch themselves, trying to interview clueless travelers who happened to be arriving at the same time. So, I've decided to make this little media circus into a gameshow called Spot Jill Carroll! I'm working on the intro right now, and I want to simulate an audience of people yelling out SPOT JILL CARROLL! in a way similar to the opening of Wheel of Fortune (ie, WHEELOFFORTUNE!). So here's where you come in. I'm hoping some of my fellow vloggers would record a snippet of audio of them saying the words SPOT...JILL... CARROLL! so I can mix them together like it's an audience saying it in unison. So if you have a few minutes, I'd really, really be grateful if you could record some audio of yourself saying these words and email them to me at acarvin at edc dot org. I'll need them in the next 24 hours so I can get this done by Thursday afternoon. I can take .wav, .aifc, .mp3, quicktime and .wmv format, though my preference is .wav. If I get enough of them, I'll use them in the vlog. If not, I guess I'll think of something else. from the reading on keith and the girl, however, a bigger and better opportunity would be difficult as, after the end of your contract with podshow, they retain rights to your brand in perpetuity - your name, your logo, your content during your contract and the content that you made coming into it. your website would be theirs. that was my interpretation. it's just like record labels who sign people up when they are new and then own the rights to their music forever after. podcasting was supposed to be a way to get away from record labels. wasn't that what curry was spouting when he started the thing? of course, many people will be fine with those terms because they are hoping that fame and fortune will offset the negatives and it might. that's an individual choice (one that i wouldn't make but that's me) either way, full disclosure is called for.anneOn 4/5/06, Michael Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: also, i think people interested in a podshow type of service are looking for exposure with the hope to land a bigger and better opportunity. well, that's the whole purpose, right? this likely holds more value than the content they will put out while in contract with podshow. its a price you pay for potential money and opportunity. cant have it all!sull On 4/5/06, Michael Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:that's probably what ot comes down to, yes. do they at least give some sort of royalties if podshow profits from your content?i think audio 'talk show' type content can often become irrelevent after some time passes whereas video is *more likely* to maintain a higer value as time passes. how many people go back and listen to a podcast from a year ago? unless these independent shows include quality music, live performances etc or is not entertainment content, then people would generally have an interest in podcast archives but for those interested in a podshow network, its mostly about entertainment and usually in the form of radio talk shows. so, maybe it doesnt fucking matter who has the rights in actuality and only good for a debate on what is fair to content creators etc. again, video is different in my mind. its possible you have YOU as a visual and that is something you dont nec want to have put out there and remixed and put out of context without your consent (and any other person that is captured). there's my besides the point piece of babble. ;)sullOn 4/5/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello,I'd need to actually read the contract, but I have a feeling that Adam Curry is using a bit of word play to mislead people. i can understand the brand and content, but hopefully they let people have another show on their own after a contract is over (and i believe the contracts are short-term). they prob own rights of the name of your podcast, logos etc... but your private name and ability to start a new show should be your right and i'd guess that it is in this case to. I've been producing an online series using Sony's HDV cameras and while it drives us crazy in editing (go for a long lunch renders) it has several advantages. [videoblogging] Re: Will vodcast/podcast Internet Entertainment Networks Work?
I think this is a tricky question and a bit confusing. I don't think we will see internet only dramas that are producing weekly episodes with budgets in the tens of millions anytime soon. This is one element of the TV template. I think that internet entertainment networks will work. (Obviously or I wouldn't work where I do.) But, it reminds me of a quote from Dave Chappelle's interview on Inside the Actors Studio. His father, a professor, asked him if he thought he could make it as a comedian. He responded that if he could make as much money as a teacher and be a comedian, then he would consider that making it. But back to the template element. I don't think it is out of the question, but I don't think it is mandatory either. I think the cornerstone of digital entertainment is the freedom to use any format, even a traditional one. I think it is like asking if television will be able to succed with vaudeville programs at its inception. It did, but it succeeded with other programs as well. Vaudeville, both over television and in person slowly morphed into unrecognizable forms such that the vaudeville format is considered passe, but the Chappelle show is fresh and innovative. [videoblogging] Re: HDD for Video Blogging?
Please note that HDD and HDV are not the same. The original question is about HDD cameras - Hard Disk Drive, i.e. tapeless cameras. Sony just announced a new $1000 HDD camera which competes with JVC's Everio line. This is quite handy because you just copy files instead of capturing from tape. These cameras is *not* high definition, however. HDV refers to High Definition Video on miniDV tapes. I also have one of Sony's HDV cameras, the HC1. Most of the time I record in high def but downconvert to DV to make editing go faster. chuck mnstories.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, toekneearm [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I've been producing an online series using Sony's HDV cameras and while it drives us crazy in editing (go for a long lunch renders) it has several advantages. The cameras seem a little more expensive, but we wouldn't need to invest in any tapes, discs, or any other media, so it seems pretty appealing and ideal for doing a vlog. What do you think? Hello,I haven't admitted it on this list, but I'm filming Internet only TV shows. (At least one should be released by the end of this year.) So I think it's coming sooner than you might think.Sure, I don't expect to pull a profit right away. And I'm not by any means spending millions of dollars. But Internet TV shows are on their way. He responded that if he could make as much money as ateacher and be a comedian, then he would consider that making it.But back to the template element. I don't think it is out of thequestion, but I don't think it is mandatory either. I think the cornerstone of digital entertainment is the freedom to use any format, even a traditional one. I think it is like asking if television willbe able to succed with vaudeville programs at its inception. It did, but it succeeded with other programs as well.
