But he still needs YOU to send him computer video questions

 If you're sending a video question, use Blip.tv or YouSendIt.com .

Also, Vlog Santa needs money for more Schlitz so he'll do

Someone else emailed this link last week
as Josh Leo said...it really reminds me of the Videoblogging group's
first year when we were really just making videos to talk to each
  other.

I remember that journalists would denigrate us becasue we talked about
the act of videoblogging..and seemed to just be talking to each other.

I really hope the Youtube crowd reaches outside their Youtube community.
this again is my only problem with these social networks.
yes, they encourage a lot of internal communicationbut it usually
  stays within that group.

Precisely. The very nature of these social networks... these
communities to kick the term some more as eric rice I think was
 implying.

Is that this is about inter-personal communication. As such these
services are to a large degree NOT interoperable. They're like having
a telephone that only works on network a, but not on any other phone
network. They betray the very nature of the end to end principal of
 the network.

That said to the degree they use RSS and downloadable files is to the
 extent they become more interoperable.

The ability to aggregate media from my friends regardless of what
service they're on is extremely important to me.

I cannot be required to go visit 18 different media sharing / social
networking sites to keep up with my friends. THis is the very idea of
RSS. The media from our friends no matter where they are in the world
or what webservice on has to come to US.

I see many people in the Videoblogging group evolving in their
content...and taking on more ambitous, well-organized projects. I
wonder how long it'll take for the YouTube crowd to evolve past the
  hi, here i am phase.

I think in many cases some have.

The problem is youtube still perpetuates the idea that it's all just a
big popularity contest. This promotes the idea that it is all about
viral video, funny videos, and other 'entertainment' hiding the true
identity of this beast which is it's more akin to email, IM, the
telephone... it's just personal communication that just so happens to
be public. in fact architecturally and functionally speaking it's
closest relative is this very yahoo group, but media rich.

this is exactly what we always wanted.
its only been about 20 months.

By it do you mean youtube? If so... yeah... this is the sort of
personal communication I've always thought vlogging would be... I love
it... HOWEVER... I think youtube because it's so inoperable is as
 dangerous a beast as mp3.com.

I think sooner or later because of the vast amount paid for youtube,
and the type of deals google is making to turn it into a tool for
advertising to the masses... instead of for mass communications... and
finally because they're playing for keeps discouraging
interoperability through RSS with devices like ipod... or the PSP, or
the next gen of cell phones and media players or ANY device
 besides youtube.

Youtube offers non of this, nor ironicly does it offer any mechanisms
for anyone to profit from their videos... which is why ironicly the
biggest, brightest, and most popular entertainment videoblogs aren't
 on youtube.

I've come to terms a long time ago with what youtube is and isn't.
It's not evil. It's just the same old business plan reappropriated
 again and again.

Just let me know when I can can subscribe to all my youtube friends on
my portable media player or television right alongside all my other
friends. Maybe then I'll stop not liking yourtube.

The offense we committed was creating a small tool that lets people
download YouTube videos to their hard drives. We referenced the tool
in a recent post that walked people through the process of moving
 YouTube Videos to their iPod.

We created the tool only after a careful review of YouTube's Terms of
Use, which state If you download or print a copy of the Content for
personal use, you must retain all copyright and other proprietary
notices contained therein. The letter, however, states The YouTube's
Terms of Use also allows users to access videos only through the
functionality of the YouTube website via streaming on the Web, and it
disallows the functionality of downloading videos. Not only am I
unable to find that language in YouTube's Terms of Use, it directly
conflicts with the language I did find and quoted above.

Agents bring experience and tenacity. They only make money if you

and bring that experience to you.

If you don't want make money, don't get an agent. But even if you
accept $100 and you have to sign a contract, you should start thinking
about the long term implications of what you're doing.

The biggest thing I've learned is that while I may have an instinct
for business, I do not have the tools or the experience to get the job
 done.

I want to be the next Spielberg or Rodriguez, telling stories on a big
scale, but I can't get there without good advice and great negotiations.

People like Brent Weinstein, Barret Garese, Jay Gassner and Larry Salz
at UTA, and John Elliott at Gold/Miller are now giving me that advice.

That's not to say that I don't have to educate them about the new
realities of creating content in the online world. Some of them think
I'm weird for wanting to self-publish our DVD. But it's a learning
 curve on both sides.

The idea is simple: imagine 100 people give 10$ a month.
Chris has 28 days to raise 1000$ which will let him have a month to
edit his new series.
your money only goes to Chris IF he can get the entire amount pledged.

When I first saw this, I thought of a similar project where they spelled words using the Flickr database:

Agreed. Alot fun, creative possiblities!

Hello!I'm pleased to present the new and improved version of my thesisproject, VideoString! You can view it at it's new home,
http://www.videostring.net
!If you participated in my user input survey a few weeks ago, THANKYOU!Your input has helped me to improve this program dramatically.Among the suggestions that I took were:I added natural sound behind the video clips instead of crazy loud
static noiseI added a clear button, so you don't have to individually removetiles from your poem when you are finishedI re-designed the interface, allowing the poem to move to the leftwhile the video plays
I added color control options for those of you who don't feelentirely comfortable with teal blueI added playback variations, including the ability to repeat a videoor play a new version from the same poem

I added the ability to save and link to videos so you can view themlater or send them to a friendI added buttons that allow you to search for parts of speech ifyou're stuckPlease check the project out, create a poem, and share it with a
friend (by clicking on URL of movie, you know!).This project willonly grow with your help, and the help of your friends! At thispoint, the major thing missing is your videos. Are you frustrated
with the lack of vocabulary?Make me a video for one of the wordsthat isn't represented yet!The complete word list is linked fromthe submit video menu, and that link leads you here: http://

www.videostring.net/WordList.html .This is one place where youreally can control your environment... to an extent ;-)This will bea grassroots kind of project, and hopefully it will be pretty fun inthe end.
Thanks so much for your support!Serra---Disclaimer:I'm sending this e-mail to you because either you have expressed interest in my thesis project, VideoString(

www.videostring.net)-- are interested in (or have commented on) my video blog, headsoff(headsoff.blogspot.com
)-- are my friend, teacher, or associate outside the blog/vlog-o-sphere
If you feel you don't actually fit into any of those threecategories, and/or would not like to hear from me about this anymore, then please reply to this e-mail and ask to be removed from my e-maillist... although i doubt it will be a very frequent e-mailer if there
even is a repeat...

This is an excellent article about videoblogging. Ellen Lee, of the San
Francisco Chronicle, presents an accruate view of how some
videobloggers use vlogging to capture fleeting moments of life.

It's unfortunate that the headline writer totally missed the point of
the article by writing, Online diaries looking a lot like television.

The whole point of the article is that most of the video blogs
highlighted in the story are not like televison at all.

I'm guessing your friend is using a Mac, so you can use ffmpegX. (Never used it myself though... don't have a Mac.)

I have a FireAnt-generated OPML file of all the valid feeds at

quickly (I hope) to your vlog viewing program of choice.

These are the videoblogs for which I couldn't find valid feeds or any
feed or they weren't responding:

Anne Walk http://nopractice.blogspot.com --NO FEED?
Magic Monkey Bob http://magicmonkeybob.blogspot.com/ --NO FEED?
Susan http://kitykity.blogspot.com/ --NO FEED?
Ted Tagami http://www.tagami.com --FEED (invalid)

If you have a feed for your vlog and I missed it, just drop me a line
so I can add it to the OPML file and, later the mega-feed.

The Week of Vlogging Dangerously:

Who: YOU!
What: 1 week (7 days) of posting a videoblog post every day.
When: April 3-9 (to get a full weekend in at the end)
Why: because it's fun!
How: Post to the videoblogging group under this subject line that
you're going to participate, with a link to your vlog. I'll try to set
up an RSS webpage with all the week of vlogs.

Anything else?
Since it's the week of vlogging dangerously, try to do something risky
or different from your routine and vlog it. Maybe it's talking to a
stranger, or sneaking a camcorder into a store with NO VIDEO OF THIS
PREMISES ALLOWED. Maybe it's subverting the dominant paradigm, or
perhaps it's risking your very soul by buying into the paradigm for a
day.

You decide the file format, server, etc. This is just a challenge to
get your out there and videoblogging!

What if I fall behind?
Post twice the next day.

Will you help me?
I'll post a Vlogging Dangerously suggestion each day, in case you need
inspiration. I hope you don't, though! We're all creative people! Go
out and have fun!

My dream scenario is to be able to tag the individual clips in the

I'm happy to store the clips on my harddrive or on the Internet.

Any suggestions?

Re: [videoblogging] What makes a good vlog?

2006-03-10 Thread Ted Tagami

What makes a good vlog? What makes a good vlog isn't the vlog, but the things around it:

The intro to the vlog (whether in stream or on the site which it is
hosted) is clear in it's subject, style, and intent; It uses keywords
to help peope locate it based on what the author believes it should be
categorically; it offers a way to subscribe (email or RSS); it's
compelling enough for you to forward to your friends. On 3/9/06, hpbatman7 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

as many vlogs as possible. I have been to mefeedia, vlogdir, and of
course just some old fashioned searching. I have found some I like,
some I love and some. What's weird is that I am more drawn
to things I never thought I would be, people and places, that
probably under normal circumstances, I wuouldn't give 2 seconds to

I never saw myself as a reality person...maybe because
the reality that regular TV trys to feed us, feels
soUNreal.

Now for me I like a mixture of stuff, ordinary, mixed with
creativity, maybe because that is what I hope to accomplish on a
regular basis. I also love the man on the street kinda things,

This video made me sad. I lost my dog in January. I held him while he died. The dog was not a
man, just a dog. He was 14 years old, and I was with him since the day he was born.
The vet helps us cremate him and I went to pick up the cedar box about
10 days later. I still get teary-eyed looking at the box next to a
picture and his old collar, waiting for the first day of Spring for a
ceremony of rebirth and thankfulness for knowing that spirit that left
me. There was some dignity in death. This video felt raw, very raw and
naked. It helped me understand the word humility, yet I feel cold, vacant.

Somewhere/time in the future there will be a dusty place in the

Obviously such variable pricing works because the number of seats in
the theatre is limited and they have a half life. It's not dissimilar
to the freshness of vegetables on the shelf at the grocer which expire
or the freshness of media. If a seat in the theatre goes unsold it's
not recoverable. If a bunch of carrots go unsold they are not
recoverable.

What happens to the price for a show on the Internet once it is no
longer fresh, can it still be sold as new? Can a secondary market
develop and, if so, how will it work?

Now to argue my point from the other side... This may be a great
service for some people. The basic step of putting video on a website
can be solved in a number of ways. This may be a nice widget for doing
just that.

But your question was if this service had any value to videobloggers.
To that question, my answer is no. It has little if any relationship
to videoblogging other than it being a way to embed a clip on my blog
sidebar... that's about it. But as for distrbution of media, I don't
really see it there. If I have to come to your website to watch it,
then it ain't really distributing.

If I put my video in their service, can I get it back? They turn it

using the shared standards of the blogosphere like RSS.

Put it this way, why don't I post every text blog entry as a read-only
PDF *and* disallow anyone to download that document. That doesn't
 really help people distribute media.

Seriously, depends on the day/place/people for me. I can really dig

Some detail: An introvert is someone who is re-energized by being alone, but when they spend a lot of time around people, they feel drained and maybe anxious afterwards. An extrovert is the opposite: energized in the presence of others, but
drained after a weekend in isolation. Most people are somewhere in the middle. Note that this has nothing to do with shyness or stage fright/stage presence. I would like the lurkers to respond, too, if you all don't mind (since
otherwise the results will naturally be skewed towards the extroverts, introverts being more likely to lurk on forums). Where do you put yourself in the introvert/extrovert spectrum? [If you've taken the
Meiers-Brigg personality test, you pretty much know already]. And if you're willing to mention it, where is your videoblog? I'm interested to know if there's a higher percentage of one personality trait or the other, and I'm keenly interested in knowing
if introverts and extroverts make different styles of videoblogs. Also, if you're the kind of person who adamantly hates labels like this, I guess I don't mind you not answering. --Stephanie

I am the lead moderator of the Videoblogging Group.

The last couple months Ive been reading this list, being quiet.
Its pretty amazing the amount of personalities we've brought together here.
I'm glad people take the time to discuss and philosophize Videoblgoging.
We even now have a pretty diverse world to gossip about.

When Peter and I started this group in spring of 2004, we just wanted
people to talk to.
It was a lonely time.
We were posting videos to our blogs...and only found a handful of
other isolated people doing it.
We needed affirmation and discussion on the technology.
Look in the archives and see when we were discovering RSS feeds and enclosures.
This is pre-Feedburner.
We were figuring out how to TALK about videoblogging.
The group quickly became a place to help people get started.
It was extremely exciting.

After 2 years, the technology of Videoblogging is fairly well
understood by the Blogosphere.
Now conversations seem to be on definition, intent, and format.
Good. In the beginning, we always wanted more talk on the CREATION of
videoblogging.

As a moderator, all i ask is that people respect each other.
Just as you should be doing in real life.
You hate that Rocketboom just made 40,000$ for a week of advertising?
Cool, but post constructive criticism about it.
I see a lot of complaints that seem more like jealousy.
Love it or hate itRocketboom is one of us.
we're too small a group to tear each other apart. Anything that helps
people learn to subscribe and watch videoblogs is good. This gets a
person(who is curently watching TV) one step closer to watching you.

To the consternation of my other moderators, I have always been
hesitant to curtail anyone's opinions in the Videoblogging Group.
I feel that its one of our strengths.
Unlike other tech lists that are extremely strict on subject matter,
we've always been able to weave our personal outlook on life into our
technology conversations...though I do email people off-list to chill
out.

>From the beginning, we realized we are helping create an alternative
media structure.
It has more to do than specific html code or RSS specs.
We are simultaneously having a conversation about how we, as people,
can create and distribute our own media. This has never been possible
with video/audio on this scale.
We are learning how to talk about ourselves and the world around
us...which is a challenge because we are so used to traditional media
over-simplifying complex issues. or lying.
The worst thing we can do is not respect each other and tear our
movement' apart.

For me, http://vlogmap.org is the shining example of our achievement.
i still am waiting for the strong connnections to people in
non-western countries through videoblogs. I want things to get fucking
nuts.

Bottom line: put your passion in your videoblog.
You dont like one style...then make yours the best so it spreads.
Examples are what help us evolve.

No one should get so cocky to crush someone else. We're all learning.
Eventhough I don't like everyone's videoblog on this list, I respect
the fact that each of you is putting out your own voice. Your vote is
what you subscribe to.

Remember that we are still at the crawling beginning, but the
revolution has happened.
We've won.
The creation and distribution barriers are open. No one can take this
away from us.
We all know that people are hungry for differing voices, so start exploring.
The way we lose is to marginalize ourselves and the work everyone is doing.
Work on storytelling, on showing more of the world, of your techniques.
Link to people you like. Talk ti up. The blogosphere is the chattering
class. We push stuff to the top.
And this only makes us better.

in context:

Superbowl ads reached 90.70 million people @ $16-$27 cpm. RB has 0.13 million with current auction @ $23 cpm.

Some additional issues to consider include: international vs national
audiences; viewer demographics; frequency; reach; accurate measurement
and analytics; and buzz factor (very fuzzy to define/measure).On 2/7/06, T.Whid [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Andrew thinks the show is worth $50 - $150, that doesn't make it so

correct me if I'm wrong).

That's the purpose of an auction, it creates the price. The price is
what the market decides it wants to pay for it. Of course, Andrew
doesn't have to accept whatever this price turns out to be.

This is interesting. I wonder what kind of content they'll be pushing
exactly. If they are just going to push ads I doubt that they will be
all that successful. People are already pretty ad averse, I doubt
that they will want to just subscribe to an ad only feed. If they
have good content it might work. It also kind of sounds like they
might be developing a delivery mechanism outside of itunes--but that
could also just be poor writing. Overall it could be good in general
in terms of penetrating the conscienceless of the general public

On Tuesday, some of the nation's biggest
advertisers got a pitch from a surprise media buying solutions
provider: online auction service eBay. Details of the presentation,
and the reaction of the ad executives--members of the Association of
National Advertisers influential Television Advertising
Committee--could not be discerned at press time, but executives privy
to the meeting told MediaDailyNews that eBay was invited by the committee to present ideas for building an electronic trading system for buying and selling media

Who knows? Maybe if there is a flood of vlogs going to auction eBay
will kick it in and take it from the bottom (e.g. pez dispensers)

2006-01-29 Thread Ted Tagami

I need to go the other way around. I am watching a .qtl and want to
save as a .mov. I have QT pro and have tried every option under save or
export and end up with large files of nothing! There must be something
I am missing? On 1/29/06, andrew michael baron [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

You just simply change the filename from .mov to .qtl

When trying to do so, your OS may ask if you are sure you want to
change the extension so just say yes.

I have been making .qtl files recently in order to open videos in
full screen mode.

Does anyone know how to save a streaming .qtl file to the desktop? I
try to save as a .mov but end up with only a reference link. If I try
to save as an .avi I end up with 15mb worth of the qt logo! :/

 Any pointers appreciated.

it might be a real stream. I am not sure of the redirect. Essentially
there is a great clip of Al Gore's speech on MLK's Birthday that I
wanted to save:

Are you getting the info from a real stream (rtsp://) or just a .qtl
download? If you've just downloaded a .qtl file from the web somewhere
just rename it to .mov like Andrew said. If you're getting the info from a
stream (*not* a fast start movie) then I don't know if renaming will work.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom to Auction Advertising Time on Ebay?

2006-01-29 Thread Ted Tagami

Andrew and Amanda have thought alot about the auction's short and long
term issues, and I believe they are seeking to strike an ideal balance
between revenue with transparency and sponsorships.

Not that I am an A-List vlogger by any means, I wouldnt do this no

I do have Google Ads on my site and that's plenty. To insert ads into
the videos? In my opinion, that's just obnoxious to the viewer. As we
are inundated with advertising on TV all the time, I would rather that
online videos be clear of this crap.

I hate the fact that big media sites force you to watch commercials
before their content. I refuse to watch their videos for that reason
alone. If vloggers started doing this, I wouldn't watch their videos
either.
