Re: Resolution to My iPhone Will Not Stay Connected to Wifi
Thanks Mark for posting this. It interestingly demonstrates that when people have problems after an upgrade they immediately all start posting to the web that the upgrade itself caused whatever the issue. Sometimes the upgrade process is more to blame and for some reason the upgrade process seems to often result in unwanted issues. A google search can reveal a complete collection for example of how every single IOS release has caused battery issues that didn't exist in the one before and they sware are single handedly the fault of the new update. I think there may be actually a similar collection although not as complete of wifi issues for many IOS versions. It is most unfortunate when the problem actually is tied to the IOS version, but thankfully it often is not necessarily. On 5/12/12, M. Taylor mk...@ucla.edu wrote: Hello Everyone, First, let me thank all of you who replied to my inquiry. Second, Let me say that I resolved the issue which was so simple it hurts me to post it but I will do so in hopes of sparing others a long and lengthy troubleshooting experience. As I posted in my previous message, my iPhone 4 S began losing Wi-Fi connectivity. Actually, I noticed it a while back but in the last couple of days it had gotten to an almost intolerable level; dropping the connection after less than 10 seconds or so. 1. Yes, I reset the router but doing so had no effect as I suspected that it would not given that my Windows computers and my Mac connected just fine. 2. From the iPhone's Settings menu I chose to reset the network connection. This had no effect, as well. 3. Turning to iTunes, I decided to Restore my phone; immediately followed by restoring a previously saved backup. As it turned out, this was not necessary however, if I had not placed a backup system on the phone, I suspect the problem would have been resolved then and there. At this point, let me state that I am amazed at how well iTunes placed the backup system on my phone. It took a while but, when completed, the phone looked identical to its former self. 4. When my problem persisted, I turned to the web and discovered that many, many people were complaining of the same symptoms as I. The general consensus is that v5.1.1 has broken something in the 4 S. 5. For whatever reason, I decided to take my phone to the Genius Bar just to confirm that the actual receiver was not damaged. 6. Reflecting on what I had just read on the web, I decided to update my iPhone 4 to 5.1.1 to see if I could re-create the problem. As strange as it may sound, I was hoping that I could for doing so would confirm that the issue was software and not hardware related; this would allow me to cancel my Genius Bar appointment. 7. So, after updating my iPhone 4, I decided to fire up my old iPhone 3GS as well and let it get in on the party. By the way, my 3GS is still running iOS 3.x. 8. To my astonishment, I could not re-create the problem on either my 3GS or my 4 running 5.1.1. This furthered my suspicion that my problem lay in the 4 S hardware. 9. Back to Google and an obscure article that suggested that people experiencing this issue should do the following: Now, let me just say that after doing the following, my iPhone 4 S is running as smooth as Tupelo honey, Honey! On the iPhone 4 S go to the Settings menu. Next, select General. Next, select Reset. Finally, select Reset All Settings. You will need to confirm your selection. To my extreme delight, I discovered that while doing this fixed my Wi-Fi connection problem, it did not reset all of my settings such as SMTP servers, passwords, etc. Goodnight All and to all a good night. Re: Jailbreaking A Phone
It's not a short answer. I think the reason people jailbreak falls into one of two camps. Camp one are those people who feel there's a few too many restrictions on their phones, and want a bit more power. As someone who is not jailbroken, I read with envy all of the things you can do with a jailbroken phone: send and receive texts from your computer using your web browser of choice, block specific callers or texters and set up specific rules for how certain numbers are handled, set up lots of quick ways to get where you want to be such as opening your radio app by holding down the volume button for a few seconds, open apps and toggle settings using your voice, and so on. Basically, it turns your device into a mini computer and there is a whole host of genuine benefits that you can have. The other camp are unlockers: people who want to use their GSM phones on other carriers. To be clear, there's no reason at all for locking phones other than control--it's totally arbitrary, and even illegal now in some countries such as New Zealand. So I don't blame people for wanting to unlock their phones. I have heard from others on this list that jailbreaking somehow makes your device vulnerable, but there is little empirical data that I have seen which corroborates this: unless, just as with a PC or a MAC, you install a viscious or insecure app. In fact, non-jailbroken iPhones have security concerns as well. You are right though, that if you need warranty service and you walk into your local Apple store with a jailbroken iPhone, they will of course not fix it for you. Grant On 5/12/12, CD cd5...@gmail.com wrote: I'm not sure this question is for the list but why would someone jailbreak their phone? Don't you lose all of the warrantees on it if you do that? Re: Mark On iPhone On Trekker Breeze
Hello Raul and list, I've been reading through this thread on GPS solutions and trying to sort everything out. I've actually been contemplating purchasing the Sendero GPS product for the BrailleNote, as I've played around with the demo and it's absolutely armed to the teeth in terms of functionality. In fact I have a feeling that if cost were not a factor, it would be entirely in a class of its own in terms of GPS products for the blind. As I understand it, the Breeze doesn't offer quite the same functionality as the Sendero product, but it's rapidly catching up. I'm really really disappointed with the corresponding products on the iPhone, for the reason that they're a bit too fiddly, with some features totally absent. For example, the reality is that whether you're walking around your city, your college campus, or a new place, you're going to encounter parks, cul-de-sacs, residential areas, and the like, which make all mainstream GPS apps pretty much a no-go. For example, at my home and on the campus where I am currently studying, there are lots and lots of these non-street areas, and the only app that's really ever given me confidence in it is Sendero. One of its most valuable assets is the ability to set up routes (yes, both on streets, in parks, in the country, and in combinations of those) with specific turning points, landmark names, and instructions. Routes can be basic turn-by-turn ones set up automatically, or specific, manual routes with instructions such as approaching forty-five degree turn right etc.. Sendero can even track where you have walked and set up a route based upon your GPS data, all automatically. I mean, Ariadne GPS can guide you to a specific point (provided there's an internet connection) but in order to really follow a route, you'd have to set up and organize hundreds of favorites, which isn't really what it was intended to do. Commercial apps like Tom Tom and Navigon offer turn by turn directions in urban areas, but that wouldn't work for me in either of the areas in which I frequently travel since parts of them are not urban, and even the parts which are urban are not straightforward enough where turn by turn street directions are sufficient. Of course, to switch between several GPS apps on the iPhone you have to stop walking frequently and fumble around with the phone, which is a bit distracting and not totally what I want. You can go to a specific favorite or you can have turn by turn directions; that seems to be just about it. I don't know, it just doesn't seem to quite do it for me after using the Sendero demo. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a rant, far from it; I love my iPhone and all the wonderful things it can do. It'll be interesting to see what Sendero's app is capable of doing when it's released. But for now, plunking down some serious cash (if possible, of course) seems to me to be the best thing to do, for Sendero if you have a BrailleNote, or as the next-best option, the Breeze. Why does the app store have so many apps which do the same thing or similar same things? This is what using a device like the iPhone is all about. Some apps might have enough features that another one isn't necessary. For example, I personally don't care to have the next street announced as I get there. Yet I see this as a frequent request and need when people want GPS programs on the iPhone. When I worked for GW Micro and helped to develop the SenseNav software which is the SEndero offering on the Voice Sense and Braille Sense, I too was asked by users to make sure the up-coming street feature worked well. I used to personally turn it off when using it on my own. As for developing a blind-only app, let me remind everyone that when SEndero came out with their Lookaround app, many people got it because it came from a Blindness software company and didn't care that they paid $5 for it, yet many people complained at the level of what they got for their $5 because they felt they could get the same, or more from other apps which cost less, or which are free. Because we are a very small market, an app which can only be used by the blind, or which mainly the blind will purchase, will be more expensive. This is why program updates have cost Sendero GPS users around $150 per year. The cost goes into

Lastly, the phone is more responsive with the lower quality voice. Cheers. -- Raul A. Gallegos If you fall, I'll be there. RE: new with phone and tactile screen
Hi Judy Many new iPhone users prefer our basic or standard model, because it makes typing and overall orientation to the screen easier. If you are still learning your iPhone, the tactile markings can also help you with swiping straight. In general, if people come to us as more experienced iPhone users, we recommend the advanced layout, which has less dots. Also, if folks prefer to type on an external bluetooth keyboard rather than the virtual one on the phone, the less dots are helpful. I've personally demonstrated our tactile screen protectors at conventions and workshops, and have found that once they can see it on a phone, most people who have assumed that the more dots would be bothersome, have actually found them more helpful rather than hindering. I think it's easy to make an assumption when you can't hold it in your hand. We do tell people that the tactile screen protector is for use in portrait orientation only, but we've also found that this is the prefered orientation for most voiceover iPhone and iPod touch users. After having tried the hq voice on my IPod 3rd gen and my IPad 1, I had given up on it. I just got an IPhone 4s and am quite pleased with how the HQ voice works on it. Response is snappy, not sluggish. It doesn't cut out or miss syllables or break up in any way as it did on the other devices to greater or lesser degree, especially the IPod. It must be dependent on the processor and/or the amount of ram. Not sure how much ram the 4S has, but I think it is the same as my IPad 1, so perhaps it is just the processor difference. Re: My observations on the clarity of the HQ voices on the iPad and iPhone was RE: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off
It has been my experience that the high-quality voices on the iPhone and iPod are similar to a lot of the SAPI voices on a Windows computer. You need more CPU and more memory in order to take advantage of these voices fully. In addition, because they are high-quality voices, they usually do not sound as good at faster rates. This is just my opinion. -- Raul A. RE: new with phone and tactile screen
Hi Fred. The tactile markings on our screen protectors are for typing (the locations where the letters are on the virtual keyboard are marked,) as well as orientation. So for example, I have the standard layout on my phone because I do a lot of typing on my phone, and prefer to not have an external keyboard all the time. But when I'm not in text messaging, email, or any other app where the virtual keyboard is visible, the dots on the screen can also help me quickly find where a particular folder is on a certain page. So in my case for instance, because of how I have my phone organized, I know that the messaging app is located where the letter Q is on the virtual keyboard. If I don't want to swipe around my screen, I can just go to it. Obviously that's not something that would apply to everyone, because it's dependent on how your screen is organized, but that's how I've used it. In other apps, like Heytell for instance, I use the markings where the letters are as a means of orienting so that I can quickly find the select contacts button. If you do use a tactile screen protector, (and perhaps other users can also attest to this fact,) you really can do such orientation within other aps or for locations of folders etc on the screen. Also, standard iPhone controls in both our standard and advanced models are marked, so for instance, if you're in mesaging, you can easily locate the compose, send, add from address book, and cancel icons. As someone who had a hell of a time dragging apps into folders, I also find that the screen protector helps me for that. It helps me to go straight, and also I can have a reference point on the screen where the folder I want is located. I hope this makes sense. Taylor Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 11:56 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Resolution to My iPhone Will Not Stay Connected to Wifi Hello Everyone, First, let me thank all of you who replied to my inquiry. GPS solutions - Was Re: Mark On iPhone On Trekker Breeze
Hi Grant, your message was well-thought out. I have helped to develop the Sendero product on the Braille Sense, and I am very much aware of its capabilities. I can see where you are coming from. I haven't personally tested Sendero or iPhone GPS apps in areas like what you describe, so I don't have any experience to draw upon with that. One thing which comes to mind is if I want to walk around in a park or large non-street area, I don't see how an iPhone app can help me stay in the know of where I am because many of them depend on actual street locations. If I'm hiking or if I'm in a park, then the only one I can think of which would help is an app like My Way. This is where a program such as Sendero for the BrailleNote or Braille Sense would seem to come in handy and maybe resolve these issues. I'll be excited to see what Sendero can do on the iPhone when their app comes out. I've only used a Breeze for a few minutes as a demo, and what I gathered from it was not too bad either, but because I've had more experience with Sendero, I think I'm biased and like it better. I really hope that Sendero or someone can come up with a GPS solution for the iOS devices which can meet everyone's needs. However it's also true that what is out there already for many people isn't too bad. For example, I can set a route in Navigon to go somewhere and then switch to Ariadne and just stay there, so this negates switching back and forth to get more information. This wouldn't work in my walking in the park example though. So again, it just shows that not all solutions are going to work for everyone. This is no different than someone who really needs accurate and little to no fuss when scanning documents. For many people, a dedicated scanning solution such as Kurzweil with a scanner on the pc will be best, while others will be fine with an iPhone and an app such as Prizmo. Thanks, and take care. -- Raul A. Gallegos Tip of the day: Never have a heart attack while playing charades. But for now, plunking down some
Re: Groundwire Questions
Hello Joe. I'm honestly not sure how using Groundwire would affect the integrated Sprint/GV number. I would imagine that since it also has support for GV, it might interfere with the Voicemail features if any rerouting of the GV number is done so it moves from your phone to the Groundwire app. I wish I had a better answer, but I would only be guessing. It's true that I have a GV number, but I don't have Sprint, so it's not tied to my ATT phone number the way it is with Sprint. Regarding the usage of wi-fi, if they base it on the IP address you are at, and block it accordingly, then you would have to use a vpn. However if all they care about is using it on wifi, then it shouldn't matter and you can still make u.s. calls and your outgoing number would be the GV number which is still a u.S. number used to make calls to the U.S. The quality is probably not as good as a real cell phone call, but with a good wifi connection, I would imagine that it should be acceptable. I'm sorry I don't have concrete answers for you right now. I can give this app a try and see what I can figure out. I'm not planning on going overseas for a while, so all my testing would be from U.S. IP addresses. -- Raul A. I don’t know what that would do with the Phone app, and what would that mean for Visual Voice Mail? 2. If I’m using the service overseas in a wi-fi network, could I theoretically make free U.S. calls from that other country, or am I going to have to set up a VPN network to use a U.S. IP address? 3. Does the G729 codec significantly improve call quality to make it worth the additional purchase? For general reference, I used CallCentric as my SIP provider and IPKall for a free DID number. I may write up a blog post on the subject in case anyone’s interested on how to make/receive calls without paying beyond the cost of the app. Thanks for any help. Re: My observations on the clarity of the HQ voices on the iPad and iPhone was RE: VoiceOver Compact Voice On/Off
Hello Phil/. The best test would be a little more than what you suggest. First off, it should be the same text as you say. Second it should be demonstrated on an iPhone, iPod Touch, and an iPad. Third, it should be at rate 40 or 50 for both voices, and then at rate 80 for both. I could do the iPhone and iPod Touch part, but since I don't have an iPad, I couldn't do a full comparison. -- Raul A. Gallegos Tip of the day: Never have a heart attack while playing charades. RE: Resolution to My iPhone Will Not Stay Connected to Wifi
Hello Lois, You know, you make a good point. I remember reading on the web that many people discovered that they had, in fact, racked up some serious data usage after not realizing that they were accessing info via their cell connection rather than via Wi-Fi. I must admit, after resolving this issue, I noticed how much faster apps such as CNN, Safari, etc run given that now they are using the Wi-Fi. To those of you who have recently updated to the latest version of iOS, please be aware that the loss most often occurs after locking the display screen or if there is no phone activity after 10 minutes or so. Also be aware that, from time-to-time, the signal can and does automatically reconnect but not for long. Taylor Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 11:56 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Resolution to My iPhone Will Not Stay Connected to Wifi Hello Everyone, First, let me thank all of you who replied to my inquiry. Re: random occurence?????
When opening Zella, and you aren't wearing headphones the sound routes to the ear piece, to get the sound routed back to the main speaker double tap on any channel, then double tap on options, the first button is turn on speaker, that will fix it. Whenever you're done using zella take it off the app switcher, so that it won't control your audio settings. Re: Using the FaceTime app
Yes, face time does require wi fi because it would really chew up a lot of data charges on 3G. And yes, it defaults to the front facing camera, but it's really easy to switch. It's also easy just to turn the phone around sometimes because the nice thing about Face time is that you don't have to be close to the speaker at all for talking purposes. Veronica At 07:47 PM 5/12/2012, you wrote: So when using face time, I assumed it would switch to the front camera because you want the person you are talking to to see you. From the description, it sounds like you have control even when using that app, to somehow switch to the back camera. I haven't use FT yet. Unfortunately, my husband has an Android phone. But I have a good friend who is sighted who has an IPhone, so I could actually take advantage of her assistance on occasion. Mark, This issue may not have to do with Zello after all. It may be a software issue with the latest version of IOS. I attempted to load yet another app, which name perhapse the messages app, or the phone app in order to add a contact and the same thing occured. Re: Accessible Fruitmachine is available in the App store
Hi Folks, I'm guessing that an Accessible Fruit machine game is a slot machine. Slots or so named fruit machine games are surely belongs to the most preferred games online. Fruit machine has a colorful and exhilarating history that began in the 1800s. However visitors in the past required to visit a land based casino to spin a few, now with the era of the on-line casinos, everyone who have PC and web access may gamble any time they want. In addition a lot of online casinos let you gamble your favorite fruit machine for free or for real money. The first slot machine was invented by Charles Fey in the early 1800s. It was named Liberty Bell. The machine contained symbols of bells and horseshoes on the reels and also gambling cards. The intention of the game was simply to obtain the greatest potential poker hands in order to gain. The users were allowed to hold the reels they wanted to keep and spin the others again, hoping to get a far better hand than the previous one. The simplicity of slot machines is the same as the additionally preferred scratch and win games. All you need is pure luck to gain considerable amounts within a few seconds. That is the most important reason why those types of games are so common amongst the online gamblers all around the world. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: problem with mail settings
Hi Danielle, Did you get your mail problem resolved? If not, I will be happy to assist you, off-list. Mark -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Danielle McCullough Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2012 4:48 AM To: Viphone Subject: problem with mail settings Hello everyone, I realy hope someone can help me please. I have just tried to go in to my email settings, but all the accounts, and the add account, are showing up as dimmed. I can't get in to edit any settings etc. Also, when I'm in settings, my twiter and i-cloud settings are showing up as dimmed. At first, I thought it was just voiceover, and that maybe it would let me double tap and enter these things, but no. I've ended everything in app switcher, and I've restarted the phone, but I still can't get access. I don't know what to do. I am using a 4S with 5.1.1. Has anyone ever seenthis before? Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks in advance. Best wishes, Danielle -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Siri Problem
I have had that happen to me, the only way I get siri back is by pressing the home button 6 times to reboot the phone. It hasn't happened to me in a long time. hth From: paul and paula jordan Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2012 10:45 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Siri Problem Just wondering if anyone has had this experience. I can use serie 3 or 4 times in a row, then the next time I press the listen button it doesn't sound the tone and serie doesn't respond. Just seems odd to me. God bless! I try to access her and she says I'm really sorry about this. I can't take any requests right now. Try again in a little while. Is there a fix for this? Thanks. Re: random occurence?????
When you open zello, if you aren't wearing headphones the sound goes to the ear speaker on the phone, in order for the sound to be restored you have to take zello out of the app switcher, because even when you power down zello still controls the sound. From: fred olver Sent: Sunday, May 13, 2012 1:35 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: random occurence? Afew minutes ago I attempted to make use of the app, Zello. Things went well until I exited the app. Voice-over was severely diminished, even when I shut down my Iphone 4 and turned it back on. I checked the sound level and was told it was at 100%. I then attempted to load another sound-using app, Atbat 2012 and this seemed to have negated the problem, so for those of you using Zello, be aware.
