Hi Sherrie,

You can use the tilt forward gesture to go to the tool bar and the first
button to b read is Record New Item lift the phone back up and a new
recording will start. So yes, the gesture can start the recording
without any tapping. You can also tilt the phone right and when you hear
add item double tap and you will be in a new item and on the record
button.

my preferred method to record quickly is to keep list recorder in my doc
on the far left. I open the app and then tap Record new item , which is
also on the bottom left. I'm then immediately making a recording.

Hope this info helps.

By the way, I bought the full version and use it mainly as a quick
recorder for notes so far but I like it and plan to learn to utilize it
more.
Another question for the expert---Is there a tilt gesture to go straight
to a new recording? I guess I will have to listen to the podcasts
again but it is really tedious trying to find a specific fact in a
podcast.

Thanks in advance,

Hi Ezzie,

There is a 5 and a half minute Podcast on www.Applevis.com which explains
how to do this.

I haven't used this feature, but apparently there is a bug in iOS 6 which
doesn't allow you to do this with Voiceover and the guy who does the Podcast
explains how you can work around the problem by briefly turning off
Voiceover at some point. As I said, it's on www.Applevis.com in the Podcast

Hi.

Coins are being purchased for real money, or you're given coints each 10th
minute if I remember correctly. each time you start a new game, one coin is
being used. So you can't play the game forever for free. :)
Gold is earned when playing the game, which is used to buy weapons. However,
that takes forever to get enough gold for each weapon, so you can also buy
those for real money if you wanna donate to the developers.
Personally I wait to I get more coins for free, and I have purchased the
weapons pack. It's recommended to use VOiceover when you're in the store.

into the page chooser area, but a pan left skips over the text area and takes
me back to the first line, not at all what is wanted. Is there no way to pan
backwards through a page once you've gotten into the page number and page

tried this before sending this note that, once back at the top of the text

Hi, there are several ways. I'll list one. All you have to do is go to
iTunes on your computer if you use that, and erase them from the apps
section. iTunes will ask you if the app should be moved to the recycle
bin in the case of Windows. You should say yes to that prompt as well.
Otherwise, iTunes merely removes the app from its database. In either
case, it will not sync with your phone any more. If you are not using
iTunes, then simply delete the app in question from your phone and it
will stay uninstalled.

Cheers.

because they went from accessible such as the Walmart app to only partly

find the phone number you want to delete. There will be a delete button right

Subject: Question about accessibility of this APP

 Hi:

I am a blind IPhone user that rely on Voice Over (the built int IPhone
screen reader) to use the phone.

I purchased a book to be read on the IPhone that needs this app to open it.

Although many bottons of the app can be read by Voice over and we can find
he book, its chapters and some other things, the text of the book is
accessible by Voice Over and we, blind people, are unable to read books
 using Bluefire reader.

I really need to read this book for a university course I am taking, so I
would like to know if you have any plan to make the app accessible for VOice
 Over users.

I also would like to mention that other IBooks readers such as IBooks, Kobo

make your app accessible as well.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re: bought the Plantronics ear buds

2013-01-19 Thread Eric
I was talking about the Plantronics 903 headphones. They are available at
Amazon for $47. The search Plantronics 903 brought them up.

I think they are most excellent for listening to voiceover and music. The
microphone may be somewhat suspect but I find that is the case with all
Bluetooth devices. The truest test seems to be does Siri recognize everything.
I would give this a better than average of the dozen or so devices I have used.

Shelley, think of them as glasses and wearing them in the reverse. The cord
goes behind your head. So, the curb part with the bud on it goes over your
ear and in front and then is placed into the year. That stem with the bud
will rotate and Extend so that you can set them to your comfort.

Any specific questions, give me a call: 296-9467

Hi.

Coins are being purchased for real money, or you're given coints each 10th
minute if I remember correctly. each time you start a new game, one coin is
being used. So you can't play the game forever for free. :) Gold is earned
when playing the game, which is used to buy weapons. However, that takes
forever to get enough gold for each weapon, so you can also buy those for
real money if you wanna donate to the developers.
Personally I wait to I get more coins for free, and I have purchased the
weapons pack. It's recommended to use VOiceover when you're in the store.

Hi, Mary,

IOS has a built[in translator to convert text into Grade Two Braille. As an
aside, it does not have a back-translation program to convert brf files into
Grade One.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an
epub file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to
export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally produced
by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille display, but
since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if
you use speech.

I hope this helps. :)

RE: thank you, thank you, I agree, yes, no

2013-01-19 Thread Regina Alvarado
Raul:
Does the change have to be control-R or can it be control-shift-R? I have
resisted or in most cases thanked people in advance for answers, but I would
love to be able to just hit control-shift-R to reply to someone privately if
I wish to for a particularly detailed or helpful response. I know we went
over finding the reply to feature here a while ago. I know because I have
the message and also found in the archives. However, It does not always
pick up the address as it should unless it keeps it hidden and puts the list
email in the to field. At times I have wanted very badly to ask a small
question to someone RE their answer to me and thank them at the same time.
However, I have been reluctant to do so because I see that it is still
addressed to our group.

Hi Raul,
I've seen this function on Google Groups before. Personally, I
propose we hand out a survey about drastic changes like this.
Another short-term solution could be to ask people to write
some hash tags when the person feels it is off topic message.
However, I think the greatest solution is if members think about
their posts before being sent to this list and other mailing
lists as well, which could cut down bandwidth (somewhat).
Cheers,
Joseph

Hello all. It's about that time again to remind people that
thank you
messages sent to the list are considered off topic. This is
because if
you want to show your gratitude to the person who gave you the
answer to
life, the universe, and everything, it's best sent to that person
directly rather than to the entire list. If there are 1400
members on
list, and you are one of them, that leaves 1399 members. If you
are
sending a thank you message for 1 or 2 people, then over 1300
members
are getting blasted with this kind of message and it just adds to
the
already high traffic on list. Yes, I agree that saying thank you
is a
form of politeness, and considering some of the messages of late
on
whether to tip or not, it's painfully obvious that some list
members
still act like children, but still, please send your thank you, I
agree
messages, or similarly worded ones, directly to the sender when
warranted.

Thank you!

USING APPLE KEYBOARD WITH MORE THAN ONE ITEM

Hi all,

Am I right in thinking that you have to unpair the Apple keyboard in
order to pair (for use) with another Apple device? I can understand why
you can't be writing on more than one item, but I'd like to be able to
swap and change easily so would appreciate an answer to this, please.

Re: Good podcast explaining Mail in IOS6?

2013-01-19 Thread Mark BurningHawk
It doesn't seem to be set up that in my screen layout, and yes, I' in portrait
mode. :)  Across the top, I have all Inboxes, then a bunch of buttons;
forward, move, reply, compose. The two columns you speak of don't seem to
correspond to a message list and a message body section. There also seems to
be no way to just hear the RE: portion of this list. And, however hard I
try, I cannot seem to go down the list sequentially, hearing all the subject
lines and picking a message by flicking to the right to hear it. Also, how the
HECK do I delete all 50 messages in my Inbox? E.G., how do you select a bunch
of messages and delete them all? Gmail is regurgitating old mail to my Pad.

THAT VERY IMPORTANT FOLDER IN THE MAILER

2013-01-19 Thread Carol Pearson

Hi all,

It infuriates me that the Apple mailer tries to work out what are our
important messages and seems to place them at random in my Important
folder. When I look in it, I find most I've read but the occasional one
I haven't.

Is there any workarqound for this, please? BTW: In case anyone thinks
I'm the only one having the problem, I am using Gmail with the native
app and I'm not archiving messages, just saving in folders when I wish.

I sure hope to lock down that Important mailbox.

Thanks for any help.

RE: Hulu Plus And Netflixs

2013-01-19 Thread Regina Alvarado
I love both Net Flicks and Hulu Plus. First, and most importantly, I no
longer pay for cable except for my broad band which is about half what I was
paying. I can watch whenever and wherever I want to as I have unlimited
data. I get to see shows without commercials, a big one in my book. I get
to watch newer shows, but I get to go back and watch some very good shows
from my past. I also get to watch shows in order, and if I choose to, which
I don't often, I can watch one show after another. A lot of shows I never
saw as I had to be in bed throughout my working life to get up at 4:00 in
the morning. I can now pick them up. It is only 8 dollars a month for each
one. Is this enough?

RE: Hulu Plus And Netflixs

Fred:

I absolutely do not like either computer site, but the apps are great. If
all else fails, I search. On net flicks there is an unnamed button in the
left corner of the phone which will take you to a list of types of shows. I
believe at the bottom of the screen on that page there is a button for TV
shows. (Can't remember right now.) I just fuss with the apps a bit, and I
seem to always find out how to get to what I want. I would love to do a
podcast on these 2 apps, but first of all I have no idea how to make a
podcast and secondly I am still learning the best way to get around.
Certain there are people who have more experience with these two apps than I
do. I have no idea whatsoever about Apple TV.

Re: THE ONE accessory every cell phone and tablet owner should have

2013-01-19 Thread Alan Paganelli
Deal of the DayI think Buy.com just had this same thing for $24.95. I prefer
the kind that has 2 USB ports so you can recharge your iPhone etc, and a
Bluetooth ear peace at the same time as well as has a flip-down A/C plug which
can also recharge it's own battery and disconnects automatically once recharge
is complete. I've seen them with all the above plus can also charge it's own
battery with it's own solar panel when your outside. Mine does not have the
solar charger but it does have the flip-down A/C plug.

Buy.com, Amazon, and Bestbuy carry them and for all I know, Walmart, Target,
and K-Mart do too. Look around. They come in sizes from 1000 mAh, 1800 mAh,
2200 mAh, and 5000 mAh. I'm sure they have a 10 thousand too. I've seen them
from battery discount warehouse.

RE: iBooks with braile display

2013-01-19 Thread Tony Elbourn
Hi Mary and anyone else with the same equipment,

I am using iPhone 4S with ios6 and the Brailliant BI32. At the end of the
text space plus a takes you back and then space with O usually changes the
page. Once or twice I have had to pan back to the beginning of the text

Hope this helps.

Subject: iBooks with braile display

I thought I understood that it is possible to move around on a page using a
braille display in iBooks, and also how to stay in the text area when
transitioning from one page to another. So here is my confusion. When
reading and I get to the last line on the page, the next pan of the dysplay
moves into the page chooser area, but a pan left skips over the text area
and takes me back to the first line, not at all what is wanted. Is there no
way to pan backwards through a page once you've gotten into the page number
and page chooser area at the bottom of the screen? I suppose, although I
should have tried this before sending this note that, once back at the top
of the text area, if I press the next page space plus o, I will be placed on
the top of the subsequent page. So then the only question is how to get back
into the page I just read but not be taken all the way to the top. This is
with a brailliant tbi32.

Thanks.

Net Flicks and Hulu Plus

2013-01-19 Thread Regina Alvarado
Fred:

Someone here said that functionality was taken out of the apps of Hulu Plus
and Net Flicks, but I have never had any problem with them yet. No, they
are not perfect, but I just fuss a bit and can usually get where I want to
be. I actually have found a few things I decided to watch instead of what I
went to watch because I was struggling a bit. As I said, the web sites are
terrible in my opinion, but the apps are great. By the way, I was in
contact with I think it was Cheryl but not certain. She said you could not
sign up on Hulu Plus on the phone. I had someone else do my set up on the
web site, but she wrote to me and said if you write to Hulu Plus they will
send a link to use that will work. Not sure about Net Flicks, though when
investigating the web site I did see sign up so maybe they have a more
accessible setup than Hulu Plus. If you decide to take the plunge, I will
be playing more with the apps and will impart what knowledge I get from now
forward and would be glad to.

Cheers.

I think in the 2 years I've had my iPhone I've tried out a hundred
free apps
at one time or another. Most of which sooner or later were deleted.
Some
because they went from accessible such as the Walmart app to only partly
accessible or totally not accessible. Others I found I didn't really
need
or want and a few I still have. The point is, it didn't cost me a
dime to

still fun
to play with. Each person has to choose for themselves which apps are
useful to them and which aren't. I personally think a tip calculator
is a
belly laugh. I think tips should be based upon service and not because
somebody else says you should. That's what I believe and everybody

Re: USING APPLE KEYBOARD WITH MORE THAN ONE ITEM

2013-01-19 Thread Cheryl Homiak
You can pair with more than one but then you have to turn one off or be out of
its range to use another. I've done it with two and in the Apple store
questions I found people who had paired with three devices. it was warned that
there may occasionally be problems and that it will tend to pair with the
computer first so definitely don't be near your computer when trying to connect
to something else or turn the bluetooth off on the one you don't want to
connect with.

Re: iBooks with braile display

2013-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Tony,
I don't have trouble getting back into the text area of the page after I get to
the page chooser section. My issue is that whether I use one of the panning
keys to get there, or whether I use space with a, it takes me to the top, not
just back into the text area at the last line of text. I understand that it is
good, when you do space o, to be taken to the top of the text area of the page
you just turned to. But it is kind of a hassle to be in the page chooser
section, pan left once and be taken all the way back to the top of the current
page and then have to pan all the way down and find that last line again, or
maybe the line next to last or whatever. I'm thinking of this especially with
cookbooks, where you'll be reading a recipe, get to the bottom of a page and
then want to go back a line or two to review ingredients without starting all
the way at the top. So are you saying that space with a puts you on the last
line of the text area?

I really do like this display. I'm looking forward to the day when Apple
implements something that will let us assign our thumb and other keys to
functions, rather than having so many redundant key assignments.

Re: iBooks with braile display

2013-01-19 Thread Scott Davert
Hi Marry.
Maybe I'm stupid and I'm overlooking what you're saying, which I
suspect may be the case. You don't have to be at the end of the text
to use space with o to go on to the next page. You can do this from
within anywhere in the text area. Does that help? I'm sorry if I'm
misunderstanding. It is true if you hit space with OW, you'll be taken
to the top of the previous page. That's just the behavior of iBooks
I'm afraid. Sure wish there was a way to do continuous reading like
there is with speech. But braille users are totally in the back of the
bus so to speak.

from being paired from one to the other. As long as you're not in

I guess I'll have another go but, if not, will just have to accept the

Hi all,

Am I right in thinking that you have to unpair the Apple keyboard in
order
to pair (for use) with another Apple device? I can understand why you
can't
be writing on more than one item, but I'd like to be able to swap and

easily so would appreciate an answer to this, please.

Re: Good podcast explaining Mail in IOS6?

2013-01-19 Thread Sherrie
applevis.com has a guide about mail and a podcast as well. I listened to part
of the podcast but it is well over an hour and I don’t have the patience for so
much verbiage. The guide I saved and use it for reference. It is not for IOS 6
in particular but most of it still applies. At least it is a good beginning.
As a relatively new IOS user I, too, had many questions about the mail.
I ended up just having my personal mail account on my phone so I wouldn’t have
to deal with so much mail. i keep all the mailing list traffic on my PC so I
can quickly find that delete key!

No, Stanza is not in the app store. It's a little elusive, and sometimes

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally
produced by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks perfect on a Braille
display, but since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as
 gibberish if you use speech.

 I hope this helps. :)

the heck do you convert a brf file into an epub? And once you did that,
then wouldn't it be translated out of braille grade II into regular print
in the epub form? So you'd need a braille translator together with a
program that converted the text from the braille translator into epub? And
then you would have to read that file with grade II translation turned on.
Clearly, I'm missing some big step here.

WIFI Calls Via Facebook App?

2013-01-19 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I heard a blurb on the radio yesterday, indicating that Face book will now
allow free phone calls via WIFI through their app. It said that, although
their search grid got the publicity, this feature may prove much more valuable
to the average user. I wonder if anybody has tried it? I do not have a Face
book account, but if this feature is useable by the blind, it might cause me,

Thanks for any information.

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple light timers.

Re: THAT VERY IMPORTANT FOLDER IN THE MAILER

2013-01-19 Thread David Chittenden
If you are talking about the VIP folder, no messages are actually placed there.
You added names to VIP. VIP is what Apple calls a Smart Mailbox. Messages
remain where they were originally. VIP points directly to each message so you
can access them without dealing with other messages in your inbox. I believe
VIP only watches the inbox. Either way, just remove any email address you no

Re: Help with sixthsense

2013-01-19 Thread David Chittenden
The animal zombie runs toward you very fast. It can be shot, but is difficult.
When attacking you, it sounds like a dog attacking. Also, your iPhone vibrates.
This is when you shake your iPhone to avoid the animal. Other zombies attack
you even if you shake your iPhone. I believe you can be hit three or four times
before you die, but am not certain. Also, am uncertain if or when one gets

Re: iBooks with braile display

2013-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Scott,
Nope, I have no problem with space o taking you to the next page. My issue is
that if you read through the text area and then get to that portion where you
have the page number and the page chooser, there is no way to just back out of
that and find yourself in the bottom of the text area again. Panning left skips
you up to the top of the current page text area, and then you have to pan
forward all the way to the bottom line or next to bottom or whatever. I just
thing it would be nice to have a means to get out of the page chooser area that
didn't take you to the top of the text of that page. Hope that is clearer.

RE: THAT VERY IMPORTANT FOLDER IN THE MAILER

Hi Carol,

It is Gmail that creates and manages this folder, not Apple. If you use
Gmail in Microsoft Outlook or another mail client, or indeed if you access
your Gmail account using the standard view on the web, you'll see this

the Gmail website.

Hi all,

It infuriates me that the Apple mailer tries to work out what are our
important messages and seems to place them at random in my Important folder.
When I look in it, I find most I've read but the occasional one I haven't.

Is there any workarqound for this, please? BTW: In case anyone thinks I'm

I'm not archiving messages, just saving in folders when I wish.

I sure hope to lock down that Important mailbox.

Thanks for any help.

Slightly OT but relates to iOS

2013-01-19 Thread Shane clark
Hi,
Sorry that this is slightly OT but I'm not sure who to ask other than my fellow
Jaws and iOS buddies.
I need to get into my iCloud account to change something, but I need to do it
from my pc. When I go to iCloud.com, it says my browser is not up to date, and
I need to update. So, if I update to the latest IE version, which one should I
update to, and how will it affect Jaws? And where would I get it from?
Feel free to email me off list, so I don't clutter the list up. Also I'm
running Jaws 11.
Thanks.

New and seeking iPhone Info

2013-01-19 Thread Lisa belville
Hi, all. I've been on this list for a couple of weeks, but I just now got my
phone up and talking. I haven't activated it yet, but I do have a wireless
connection here so I can at least practice other things besides using it as
a phone. I'm using VZW as my wireless provider as well.

I really need a detailed description of the phone's physical layout before
moving on. I have a really good book from National Braille press, but it
doesn't discuss the iPhone 5, at least not that I can find.

I'm using an Otter Box case, so I can access most everything without
removing the phone.

Anyone know where I can get this info so it makes more sense from a
nonvisual perspective?

 Hi, Mary,

IOS has a built[in translator to convert text into Grade Two
Braille. As an aside, it does not have a back-translation program
to convert brf files into Grade One.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal
characters that represent Braille. There is no special computer
formatting for a brf file. Therefore, this same text is rendered
accurately when it's placed into an epub file.

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use
TextEdit to export the files to pdf format.

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as
originally produced by NLS, is rendered perfectly. It looks
perfect on a Braille display, but since the characters represent
Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if you use speech.

 I hope this helps. :)

I'm confused. What I think you said is that it is possible to

And once you did that, then wouldn't it be translated out of
braille grade II into regular print in the epub form? So you'd
need a braille translator together with a program that converted
the text from the braille translator into epub? And then you
would have to read that file with grade II translation turned on.
Clearly, I'm missing some big step here.

Hi Sherrie,

You can use the tilt forward gesture to go to the tool bar and the
first button to b read is Record New Item lift the phone back up and
a new recording will start. So yes, the gesture can start the recording
without any tapping. You can also tilt the phone right and when you
hear add item double tap and you will be in a new item and on the record
button.

my preferred method to record quickly is to keep list recorder in my doc
on the far left. I open the app and then tap Record new item , which is
also on the bottom left. I'm then immediately making a recording.

Hope this info helps.

a normal level if that makes any difference.
By the way, I bought the full version and use it mainly as a quick
recorder for notes so far but I like it and plan to learn to utilize it
more.
Another question for the expert---Is there a tilt gesture to go
straight to a new recording? I guess I will have to listen to the
podcasts again but it is really tedious trying to find a specific fact
in a podcast.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Hulu Plus And Netflixs

2013-01-19 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello Fred,
Netflix and Hulu Plus work flawlessly with the Apple Tv and Voiceover. All the
applications on the Apple Tv were created and maintained by Apple. Well worth
the investment, I dropped cable, and went with both Netflix and Hulu Plus.
Netflix is always getting new content, Hulu is good for watching newer shows,
and it also has a different selection of Movies. Both work great on the ATV,
well worth it…

Hi,
I know this might limit things as it’s referring to home automating services
through ADT’s residential home security division but for the sake of
information I can say that at least whatever system they use in terms of
equipment and the app and pc portal they use to control their pulse system are
extremely accessible both with voiceover on an IPhone as well as with screen
reader use on a PC.
I’m able to set timing schedules for outside lights and indoor lights to come

if only the thing would let you know when light bulbs go out it’d be grand
(smiles).
It has other things like a thermostat as well but I too have the talking one
and thus saw no need to incorporate that into my system.
I hope that helps.

I read about the belkin on Amazon, and it received really mixed reviews. In

this more challenging.

Lol, maybe I'll shelf this idea for later, and purchase the simple light timers.

A brf file is actually a plain ASCII text file with normal characters that
represent Braille. There is no special computer formatting for a brf file.
Therefore, this same text is rendered accurately when it's placed into an

You can use Stanza to convert files to epub. You can also use TextEdit to

Again, the text, completely translated into Grade Two as originally produced

Escape The House: A 3D Sound Experience

2013-01-19 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hey all,

I've just discovered this so I can't vouch for it being 100%
accessible, but it looks promissing and it's free so you don't really
have that much to loos. Initial testing suggests that it will be
playable.

Description:

Inspired by the most frightening moments from the movie House At The
End of The Street, this immersive 3D sound experience pulls you in and
traps you in the darkness. Using the gyroscope and the 3D audio
features on your device, you must blindly find your way out and escape
the House. Be warned - it won’t be easy to hear your way out of this
nightmare.

It's pitch dark - you hear footsteps coming from above. Frozen with
fear your heart starts pounding. All of a sudden you are grabbed from
behind. You hear yourself struggle, but it's no use. Someone has you
in a deathly tight grip and is forcing you down the stairs. You hear
chains rattling and realize you are getting chained up to something.
The perpetrator leaves, and this is your chance to escape…

Your heart is pounding fast, but you need to focus! Timing is
everything. Your end goal is to avoid the killer and escape the house
by walking, running, shaking your phone, hiding and screaming into the
microphone at the right moments - all in complete darkness.

FEATURES:

SHAKE your device to free yourself from the chains.

EXPLORE, WALK, RUN using your device’s gyroscope, you’ll need to turn
your body 360 degrees – be careful of what you can’t see!

SNEAK upstairs by tapping your screen - not too fast, not too slow.

HIDE Don’t move your phone and don’t make any sound, because if you
do, he’ll hear you and catch you!

SHOUT if you manage to escape the house. Scream into the mic as loud
as you can to get attention. If you’re too quiet, you won’t be heard
and cannot be saved.

SHARE your personalized video via Facebook with friends once you’ve
freed yourself .

It looks perfect on a Braille display, but
since the characters represent Braille, it will be spoken as gibberish if you
 use speech.

 I hope this helps. :)

do you convert a brf file into an epub? And once you did that, then
wouldn't it be translated out of braille grade II into regular print in the
epub form? So you'd need a braille translator together with a program that
converted the text from the braille translator into epub? And then you would
have to read that file with grade II translation turned on. Clearly, I'm
 missing some big step here.

 playable.

 Description:

Inspired by the most frightening moments from the movie House At The
End of The Street, this immersive 3D sound experience pulls you in and
traps you in the darkness. Using the gyroscope and the 3D audio
features on your device, you must blindly find your way out and escape
the House. Be warned - it won’t be easy to hear your way out of this

chains rattling and realize you are getting chained up to something.
The perpetrator leaves, and this is your chance to escape…

Your heart is pounding fast, but you need to focus! Timing is

I don't think there is all that much difference between the 5 and the 4s,
with respect to the physical layout, except the 5 has the larger screen. So
the book you have from NBP should give you the accurate info. Is there
something specific you are looking for that isn't in the book?\

Yes, or use iTunes to place the file into iBooks. You can also change the

Re: syncing Ipad with MBP15 continued.

2013-01-19 Thread David Chittenden
Hi Mark,

Remember, iOS is designed primarily to be a touch-screen interface. The way it
handles email is different from what you are use to on the Mac.

Your message list shows messages by subject. You can do some basic tweaking in
settings, mail contacts and calendar. This tweaking determines how many
messages to have in the inbox, should messages be grouped by conversations
(messages with the same subject line), what you want your signature to say,
archive or delete gmail messages, and so forth.

When you double or split tap on a message subject, it will either open the
message, or open the messages which have the same subject line. Note: I have an
iPhone, not an iPad, so I do not have access to the split screen and containers.

When in a message, you can delete, move, or reply to the message. Under reply
you will find reply, reply all, forward, and print.

When not in a message, if your rotor is set to actions (iOS 6 or later), use a
single finger vertical flick to select delete, double tap with one finger, and
the message will be deleted. The other choice is default action, which opens
the message or conversation.

If you wish to go through and select several messages for deletion at one time,
double tap on edit. Now, when you double tap a message, it is selected, rather
than opened. After selecting all the messages you wish to effect, find and
activate the delete button or the move button. There is no select all command
except in the trash folder.

You move through the list of messages/conversations using the right or left
flicks. Three finger vertical swipes move you up or down a page of messages at
a time. You can also slide your finger down the vertical list of messages to
have VO announce the subjects. I suspect that double tap on a message brings up
the text in the right-hand pane.

If you have hints turned on, and have preview turned on, VO will speak the
first couple lines of the selected message when you touch or swipe to it (iOS 6
or above).

As for your old messages in gmail, mail will continue presenting them until you
archive/delete them. I have thousands of messages to clear out this way because
I used POP and saved all messages on the server. I have now changed gmail's
handling behaviour for messages, but need to clean out several years of this
previous setting. I now use IMAP rather than POP, and changed the archive all
messages on the server to delete messages that are deleted. Once I clear out
all those older messages, the behaviour will cease.

 Hi, folks:

Thanks to all who've been very helpful to me so far in learning the Ipad 3.
Today, I charged it via the USB cable to my MBP15, and it came up in Itunes
just as it should. I authorized backup over WIFI now, too, so the hard
 connection won't be necessary.

Now, I understand that the Ipad was backed up to my computer (Though I
cannot find this backup anywhere through Finder). What I wanted to do,
however, though, was sync all my contacts from the MTP 8ONTO* the Ipad, so
that it would know all my mail addresses, etc. I have no evidence this was
done, or that it can be done.

Also, I'm having a hard time making Mail perform in a way I understand. For
one thing, Gmail insists on showing me messages from June, 2011!, which I can
deal with, but I cannot figure out how to move quickly between messages,
either in list or in body (I'd prefer to navigate by the regard, ing,
subject line column), and I don't understand how to select all and delete
them from my Inbox when I'm dong.

Is there a podcast I can inhale on how Mail works in IOS6?

My last question would be how to get audio books or music from the Macbook
ONTO the Pad, assumedly through Itunes, manually? I have 86GB of music and
only 27GB free on the Ipad. :)

 Thanks, all!

Maps compatibility

2013-01-19 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

Am I right that Apple's maps program is on the 4S and 5 only and that the maps
app works the same on the 3GS and 4 as it did in previous versions of iOS?

Thanks a lot,
Anna

Hi,

No--Apple Maps is also included on the 3Gs and the 4, so all devices
that can run iOS 6 use Apple Maps. Turn by turn directions, 3D and
Flyover, however, are not available on the 4 or the 3Gs.

No, that is incorrect. The only difference is the 4 and 3GS do not use Siri, so
don't give turn-by-turn directions. I really like the Maps app. It is really
cool.

Re: Maps compatibility

2013-01-19 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi David,

Thanks for the info. I agree that the Maps app is cool. Does anyone know
whether you can explore the maps by touch on the 4 and 3GS the way you can on
the 5, and whether they report your location if you touch where VO says
Current location and walk around? That is really a great feature on my 4S.

Thanks,
Anna

Re: Focus 40 User

2013-01-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Jess, in an FSCast, which is Freedom Scientific's podcast, I gave a short
demonstration of pairing and basic use of a Focus Blue with iOS. If memory
serves it was the September edition. Also, Apple's Knowledge Base contains an
article about Braille commands in iOS, and another about Focus Blue specific
commands.

Blindsquare: my favourite iOS navigation app thus far

2013-01-19 Thread Grant Hardy
I know this app has been discussed on list before, but just wanted to
mention that in my experience, BlindSquare, which uses open street map
data and FourSquare points of interest, offers me the best experience
analogous to holding a Trekker Breeze or a Sendero GPS system while
walking. The information can be a little verbose, but you can change
what gets announced. Cross streets are consistently announced as well
as your heading, which do not work reliably for me in other apps.
Ariadne misses lots of cross streets, and Apple Maps with VoiceOver
repeats many data numerous times while omitting lots of cross streets.
Blindsquare can also track your distance and direction from any of the
POIs it knows about, a custom address, or even a custom POI. So you
have both commercial POIs and custom POIs in the same app, which is a
nice bonus.

No turn by turn directions are available, but it's easy to select an
address or a POI and tell BlindSquare to open another navigation app
such as Apple Maps or Navigon, with the destination already set up so
you can easily plan a route. And since BlindSquare uses its own speech
rather than VoiceOver, it'll continue talking even while your device
is locked or while you're in another navigation app.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but just wanted to offer this brief
review because I've been very very impressed with an app that I never
thought I'd use--I don't use FourSquare! With BlindSquare, I feel
confident that most of the data you'd expect to hear from a blindness
specific GPS device will be there for me.

Grant
