Re: barns and noble nook app
I hope I'm talking about the same Nook app[ for iPhone and iPad but I use it all the time, it's extremely accessible and I live in the UK. I use the www.nook.co.uk website to buy books and the app downloads them straight into my device. Once I've finished with the book, there's an option to archive it which is great is it doesn't take up room on my device, and I can always download it and read it again. A great app. Andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Post a new message to VIPhone by emailing viphone@googlegroups.com. RE: New Iphone's 5S with questions
Hi, Check notification center/messages. In there, one can turn off options related to what is spoken about messages as well as how they would like to have their messages displayed on screen e.g an alert banner etc. If one's messages are being read aloud on the lock screen and while the phone is unlocked, I would turn off the option for message preview. Now a person will only hear who the message is from and not the entire message itself. If one tries this option, please let us know whether this worked for an iphone5s as I remember this question coming up on list awhile back about a similar issue. This is also the case if we are doing something else on the phone and a text message comes in, VO will read it out loud. We do not want VO to read text messages out loud since we might be somewhere where we wouldn't want everyone around us to hear it. Who knows what kind of text message we might get! LOL When we were using the IPhone 5 on IOS 6, all VO would announce out loud is who the message was coming from and this is how we would like it to work. email and other question
Hi, I've the latest upgrade on my phone and I have over 2000 emails on it, I seem to recall that someone suggested you would only have access to the emails currently on your server, but my web mail inbox only has about 2000 emails but when I check that account on the phone it says i have over 1800 and when I move back through the list I still seem to be able to access stuff that has already been removed from the server. Other than deleting these one at a time what are my options? Also when I turn my phone off it says screen locked, than about 10 seconds later it says screen locked, any idea what's going on here? Re: barns and noble nook app
You probably could, but you cannot purchase books within the app the way you can on the android app. This is because Apple requires any purchases to go through them so they get their portion. If an app developer does not want to do this, they are not permitted to direct users to other places within the app. One of the many restrictions IOS has that Android does not. cannot gift app, App Store says to set up payment information
Hi all, I'm trying to gift an app. Each time I do, the App Store pops up a dialog telling me I have to set up payment information for my account. I can buy apps just fine, and I have enough in my account to cover this transaction, but I cannot complete it. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can get this to work? I want to do this soon because the app I'm gifting is fifty percent off. I've googled the problem, but everything I find talks about a prompt to verify, not to set up. I've removed the App Store from my app switcher, and restarted my phone. Thanks. BARD and screen curtain
Hi, First question. Does BARD stop playing when your screen lock automatically comes on? I have started BARD playing an manually lock the screen and BARD stop playing. The reason I am asking is I am wondering when you set the timer say for sixty minutes and you have your screen lock set for 15 minutes so does the screen lock come on after fifteen minutes even tho BARD is playing or does it not come on as long as BARD is playing? I had my BARD player playing last night and the timer set for sixty minutes. Then after some time I heard my iPad say the screen lock and the time. I was kinda sleepy so I don't know if it played for the sixty minutes I had it set for or if the screen lock came on after fifteen minutes and stop BARD from playing. I think I fell asleep so I don't know how long it actually played but it seem to me it was not very long. Does anyone know for sure if the BARD app keep playing no matter what until it reaches the sixty minutes I had the timer set for? VPN - How does one go about setting up and arranging a Virtual Private Network?
Hi, I've heard some recent stories on national USA networks about some device that lets hackers emulate a secure WiFi connection when it is inf act not secure and they can capture all information from ones wireless connection. I have used a VPN, Virtual Private Network, through my work. I understand this sets up a secure channel within even a non-secure WiFi connection. I don't use my work VPN connection for my personal mobile activities. Is there a way I can pursue obtaining a personal VPN, and how would I go about it? RE: email and other question
Hi Tessa, Can't help you with your email without knowing if you are using POP or IMAP. I heard about this with gmail which uses IMAP, but I'm not sure if it's the same issue exactly. I seem to remember something that it shows some ridiculous number of unread email, like 100,000 for some people, but I thought that it's not like these are actually on your phone. As for the repeat of the screen locked message this is simply a little bug which is known and has been discussed many times. Nothing you can do about it except wait and see if Apple will fix it in 7.1. The latest version which you would have if you just upgraded is 7.04 and all the dot 0 upgrades are usually updates Apple pushes out quickly to address serious bugs or security issues. It's usually not until the first major update when we may see some new features and more wide ranging fixes, but there are of course no guarantees or announcements what will be fixed. I am sure Apple prioritizes these things based on the feedback they receive just as any other company would. The repeat of the screen locked message in my opinion is a minor annoyance, I would consider the various volume issues much more important, namely that you can't properly use the volume rotor to adjust Voiceover volume because the rotor gets stuck at 35% for most people and at other levels for a few others and at least on my 5S Voiceover seems to be tied to the system volume which means I can make Voiceover louder using the volume buttons, but that also makes Voiceover sounds louder along with raising the volume for whatever is playing. If, for example, I am listening to an audio book in the evening when it's quiet and I turn it down quite low, then Voiceover also becomes very quiet. Lastly, it is not possible to properly balance the volume of a phone call with Voiceover by adjusting Voiceover volume with the rotor and the call volume with the volume buttons. This was the case on my 4S before although I think in iOS 6 most people who had an iPhone 5 said they could do this. With my old 4S it was possible in iOS 5, but iOS 6 broke that and I really hope Apple can get this functionality back for people who do use the phone in speakerphone mode and want to also hear Voiceover for times when you are on an automated system where you have to hear prompts and enter numbers. I can only emphasize the importance to write an email or emails to accessibil...@apple.com and mention the screen lock message issue and other things you come across and verify as bugs because the more emails they get about a particular problem the more likely it is they will fix it. Re: Tweetlist or Twitterrific?
Hello, When it comes to list and the difference between twitterrific and TweetList, TweetList does have more functionality. Twitterrific only displays your list and lets you read the tweets within each one, where TweetList actually lets you create and totally manage your list. By managing list I mean adding or deleting people from a list. I actually have both apps, and like Raul, I like each one for different reasons. But if you want to create and manage list with your twitter account, then I would have to recommend TweetList for its full list manageability. HTH, Chris Chaffin -Original Message- From: Raul A. There's no problem, Apple does not allow gifting apps using your account balance. Volume issue on 5S - but not just with VO
Dear listers Apologies if this has been covered but on my 5S it seems that everything is quiet and the max volume is very low. I’m not just talking about VO’s volume as per recent msgs but ringtones, podcasts and everything. It may or may not solely affect earbuds as I have them in my phone 99% of the time but my max volume on earbuds is definitely quieter than before. By the way I upgrades to iOS7 at the same time as getting the 5S so don’t know if it’s hardware or software. RE: VPN - How does one go about setting up and arranging a Virtual Private Network?
Hi Keith, There are some free VPN services which have ads and potentially log your usage, I'd carefully review their terms of privacy if you use them. Typically VPN providers offer paid services. If you listen to one of the recent Podcasts from Garth from Australia at www.IBlindTech.com, you can get a promo code for ProXPN, this is also a VPN service promoted by Leo Laport from Twit TV. Below is a link which should bring up a page of Google search results with a number of good articles to read about VPN's, what they are and why one should use one. If the link doesn't work, all I did was type Using a VPN into the search box: https://www.google.com/search?site= https://www.google.com/search?site=source=hpq=using+a+vpnoq=using+a+vpn; gs_l=hp.3..0l10.3881.8859.0.9605.23.12.10.1.1.0.254.1627.4j6j2.12.00...1 c.1.32.hp..1.22.1673.WNauIKhBNI8 source=hpq=using+a+vpnoq=using+a+vpngs_l=hp.3..0l10.3881.8859.0.9605.23. 12.10.1.1.0.254.1627.4j6j2.12.00...1c.1.32.hp..1.22.1673.WNauIKhBNI8 I had a look at the first article from Live Hacker and found it informative and it also lists their top 5 choices with ProXPN listed in second place. I use a Cisco VPN capable router at my business and think I'll really have to look into setting up a VPN connection from my iPhone since the arguments in the article do make sense. Re: barns and noble nook app
Got the nook app and it's working great. The pause between pages takes a little getting used to, but it's no big deal. This is an example of very good development, the app is equally accessible on the 2 top mobile platforms. One difference is that on IOS, the app uses voiceover to read the text, while on android, the app is self voicing and sends the text to the TTS engine directly, although you can still use talkback to read parts of the text. This leaves Amazon without excuse for making the app accessible on android, and until they do, I will get my books from barnes and noble. RE: Netatmo Weather Station and Indoor Modules Black Friday 15% off discount through 12/2
Thanks, Keith, for posting this. I just told another Netatmo user, Thomas, that last year they had the 15% off Black Friday promotion, but that so far I had not received a notice about it. After you posted this I checked my email and also had the notice about it now. For those who don't own a Netatmo Weather Station and are interested, just go to http://shop.netatmo.com where you can order it. The price is $179.00 so with 15% off you get it for $152.15 and I guess you get free shipping if you are in the States. If somebody has the main weather station and wants to add additional indoor modules (3 is the maximum you can add) you can get them for $79 each, $67.15 with the discount. Netatmo is also working to release a rain and wind sensor, not sure if this will be a combined rain/wind sensor or if they will be separate. If somebody wants to know more about Netatmo you can read about it on their website and/or go to the list archive (link is at the bottom of each post) and put Netatmo in the search box. It's a unique name so you only get results which are relevant. I have been Beta testing for them earlier this year and they made the readings for both the indoor and outdoor results fully Voiceover accessible. The setup process which was not very accessible at all at the beginning is now also fully accessible. When I contacted them I was the first and only blind user, but they were very open towards looking at accessibility and once they got started it was a great experience. One caution: if you still have a 3.5 inch device like an iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S or an iPod Touch Third or Fourth Gen, the buttons to select between different indoor modules are not accessible. They are perfectly accessible on devices with a 4 inch screen and I think also on the iPad, but for 3.5 inch devices this still needs to be fixed, but I was told it will be fixed in an update fairly soon. Re: Volume issue on 5S - but not just with VO
The simplest way to deal with this is to play the sound, and while you are playing the sound, adjust the volume buttons. The default volume handling adjusts the volume of whatever’s playing, so there are independent levels for different kinds of sounds. You can go into settings, sounds to play alert tones and adjust volume there. You can also use the on-screen adjustment on that screen. Info about the Radium Music app and XM.
Hi. I got the Radium app from iTunes on my PC thanks to other users of the list. I have several observations about it. First, you have to have an internet subscription with Sirius/XM to use it with their online service. I called up XM at 800-XMRADIO, (800-967-2346). I had some trouble following the instructions of the person I was talking to. I couldn't remember my password, so he told me I needed to register with Sirius/XM. I found this strange, since I was already registered with them for my online subscription. After some going in circles, what I learned was there are two things to register for. There's the internet subscription, where you listen to content, and there's the online access where you can do things like pay bills and reset your internet password. I finally understood what the rep was trying to convey, and got the Radium app linked to Sirius/XM. I did this Tuesday, and didn't get a chance until today to try it out, because Rudolph was going to be on TV, and I didn't want to miss it. This leads me to my second observation. I haven't used the Sirius/XM app for quite a while, but the last time I did I noticed two things. The app gave a warning of a good amount of data would be used to stream the content, and there was a time limit that the app would work until it disconnected and you had to reconnect to the channel. The Radium app doesn't have either of these limits. Right now I'm listening to the NFL with it. I've been tuned in for about 5 hours, and not once have I had any disconnects or dropped feed or buffering. I'm using my WI-FI connection, but later on today I'll be heading out for Thanksgiving dinner, and I'll be taking my iPhone with me. Oh yeah, I'm using the app on an iPhone 4 with iOs 7.0.3, and the app is not too bad at its responsiveness. Oh yeah, I almost forgot a very important thing. The app works great with VoiceOver. That's it from here. To get the app, on your PC, get to the iTunes store and do a search for Radium. The app was the first in the results that I found. It's the app with music in its title. That's all I can think of to say, except Happy Thanksgiving to you wherever you are in the world. I know that this date is mainly for us in the United States, but it's always good to remember what we are thankful for. Besides, here in the U.S. we all know what Thanksgiving is about, besides being with family and friends, and that's Football! Yea Lions! GO RAIDERS and GO STEELERS! How long for an app purchased by iPhone to be available for iPad download?
Hi, I bought the Vintage Radio app mentioned earlier today from my iPhone and installed it. I wanted to download it to my iPad, too, but couldn't find it in the Search onAppStore on the iPad. It's not in the Purchased portion of the iPad Updates tab either. How long does it take to coordinate / synch apps once purchased on one device? Is there anything else I can do. I'm not travelling with my PC at the moment, so I can't do the PC iTunes things. Thanks in advance. Keith -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. iPad screen covers
Hi, I am looking at obtaining a screen protector for my iPad. Does anyone know of a good screen protector? I notice on Amazon they run in price from about two bucks to eight bucks. I was wondering if there is a different in quality? I know they make screen protectors for iPhone also. So any suggestions on this matter would be appreciated. I have been having some real trouble getting Radium to work with my Sirius XM account. I know that the username and password that I am entering is correct because on the computer I can go to the SiriusXm website and log into my account but whenever I try and log into this account from the Radium interface it says that the authentication has failed. RE: iPad screen covers
Hi Ed, Just out of curiocity, do you drag your iPad around a lot in a pack or bag where you might scratch it? Personally I don't see much point in a screen protector for an iPad. If I took it with me a lot I'd probably invest in one of the SmartCovers or a slightly padded pouch just to protect it when it's inside a pack. I used to have one of the Invisishield protectors on my iPhone 4 and while they are probably excellent protection, I just did not like how they make it hard from sliding your finger around on the screen. Other, cheaper screen protectors are harder/slicker, but I have yet to see one which is as smooth and offers as little friction as the glass itself. Keep in mind that glass is extremely hard and the glass used for an iPhone is even harder and tougher than regular glass. It takes quite a lot to scratch it and if you drop your iPhone or iPad a screen protector won't do all that much to prevent the screen from breaking. Re: email and other question
Thanks both of you. yes the screen off issue is a very small problem. The email is a little more signifficant because I have almost 3000 messages and often when I open my mail and it checks for new mail I have to wait minutes before I can actually get the screen to do anything. I touch it and it doesn't respond until some time later when i get repeated clicks. Once the clicks have been gone through than I can access the screen, but sometimes it takes a while. Well my ISP recently suggested due to it upgrading that we all switch to imap? but I haven't and am still using pop3 and I assume since my phone picked up my email settings from my pc that it is also using pop3. RE: Info about the Radium Music app and XM.
Hi Scott, When you say you can log in on the computer, does that mean you can log in to your account where you can make changes, pay your bill etc. or does it mean you log in on the computer and play stations? It was pointed out a few times that you need a separate log-in from the log-in which gives you access to your account to actually play stations either on the PC or from the Radium app. Regards, Sieghard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Scott Rumery Sent: Thursday, November 28, 2013 2:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Info about the Radium Music app and XM. RE: email and other question
Tessa, POP3 was never meant to be a protocol to be used on multiple devices where really what you want is to sync your mail. I think nowadays where people have laptops, tablets and smartphones and maybe want to access their mail on the web from time to time that services like Outlook.com or Gmail are the way to go. The advantage with one of these services also is that you are independent from your ISP and if you ever move or even just change ISP you don't have to worry about changing your email address, letting all your contacts know about the new address and updating all the log-ins where you used it. Personally I think Outlook.com which uses Exchange Active Sync is a better protocol than IMAP, but I'm sure others have different opinions. RE: Volume issue on 5S - but not just with VO
Hello Robin, I can definitely confirm this bug. I have experienced it several times. The problem is that it is not consistent and thus hard to verify. At first, I thought it was my imagination but, alas, it is not. I'm not sure what to do about it. Generally, I just restart my phone and the volume seems to reset properly. I’m not just talking about VO’s volume as per recent msgs but ringtones, podcasts and everything. It may or may not solely affect earbuds as I have them in my phone 99% of the time but my max volume on earbuds is definitely quieter than before. RE: timer on BARD
Perhaps I'm missing something here but when I want to use the sleep timer with BARD or any media playback, I do the following either before or after starting playback: 1. Single-finger tap and hold near the bottom edge of the screen until a double-pop is heard. 2. Release and then single-finger swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen. This brings up Control Center. 3. Double-tap the Clock button. 4. Assuming you've already got the timer in focus and set to stop playing and you've already set your countdown to a desired time, single-finger double-tap Start. 5. Press the Home button to return to the launch screen. Generally speaking, this takes me less than 20 seconds to accomplish. I do it every day. I will post a similar question on the Mac Mailing list but was hoping someone here could make a suggestion as I have not yet re-upped my Mac List email subscription. Hi Jen, If you go to the apps playlist, tab 5 times and it will say list radio button. Check this button with the spacebar, and it should work. Re: Tweetlist or Twitterrific?
Hello, I believe any list that you have previously created will automatically be displayed in Twitterrific. You would double tap on the menu button in the upper left hand corner, then just right flick through everything. As you right flick, you will come to your list. When you come to the list you want to open up and see the tweets from, you just double tap on it. To go to another list, your timeline, mentions or anything else, just double tap on the menu button on the upper left hand corner again. Re: email and other question
How did your phone pick up your email settings from your PC? If you're using POP, you probably don't want to use the same settings on both your phone and your PC. In general, POP will download the emails to your device and then erase them from your server, meaning you can't access your email from multiple devices. You can change these settings a bit. Here's how I had things set up when I was using POP on multiple devices. On my PC, I configured it to download my messages and remove them from the server. Therefore, whenever I checked my mail on my PC, I could take care of all of it, but I wouldn't be able to access any messages I downloaded to my PC from any other device. The PC was where I stored all of my email for future reference. On my other devices, I configured POP to download my messages to the device but leave them on my server. I further configured it to delete any messages from the server that I moved to a folder or deleted from my device. This way I could check my email on one of my devices, delete the messages I didn't have to archive or deal with later, and leave the rest on the server until I could get to my PC. It may be the case that your email is sluggish when you bring it up because all of those messages need to be downloaded. The reason you see the same messages on both your PC and your iPhone could be that you're leaving your messages on the server, and deleting them from your phone or your PC isn't deleting them from the server, so they're redownloaded every time you check your email. Note I did this until I switched to Gmail and IMAP. If you'll be dealing with your email from multiple devices, and you don't have a compelling reason to stick with POP, you might want to make the leap to IMAP. Note that there are some advantages to POP over IMAP, but they probably aren't worth it if you're going to be accessing your email from multiple devices. On 11/28/2013 04:19 PM, Tessa wrote: Thanks both of you. yes the screen off issue is a very small problem. Keep in mind that glass is extremely hard and the glass used for an iPhone is even harder and tougher than regular glass. It takes quite a lot to scratch it and if you drop your iPhone or iPad a screen protector won't do all that much to prevent the screen from breaking. Re: Tweetlist or Twitterrific?
Hi, which works better on trending and hash tagging? I don't seems able to get the hash tag result to works on twitteriffic. I do use TwittList specificly for list, but i'm trying to minimise t one app, if its possible. I know Twitter native apps works pretty good with hash tags result. Although, i haven't try it since ios 7.03 or something. But if you want to create and manage list with your twitter account, then I would have to recommend TweetList for its full list manageability. HTH, Chris Chaffin -Original Message- From: Raul A. Hi all, For anyone who has used both Tweetlist and Twitterrific, which is better? Now that Tweetlist has a paid upgrade, I'll need to buy my next Twitter client. Is Twitterrific worth a try, or does Tweetlist still do just as well? My normal actions for tweets are saving links to a read later service, opening links in an in-app browser, retweeting, and sometimes replying. Given that, which works better? Itunes issue
I was prompted when buying a song on my PC to verify payment info. Two issues that arose were I could not check the radio button for card type and could not read the combo boxes for expiration date. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone. Up until now, I move hand no trouble buying music on my PC or on the iPhone for that matter of course. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Open ear bluetooth headsets and the Aftershokz Bluez
I'm looking for some open ear bluetooth headsets, and I'm particularly interested in the Aftershokz Bluez. I've read up on them on AppleVis.com, and I've reviewed some of the discussions here on this list, but before I put them on my Christmas wish list, I was wondering if there's anything else I should consider. Here are more details on what I'm looking for. I'm specifically looking for something I can use when outside to listen to GPS instructions and check information at street corners or bus stops. I want to be able to hear what's around me, so the fact that they're open ear is important to me. I'm specifically looking for the convenience of bluetooth. I just don't want to have to worry about the wire when out and about. I have plenty of other headset/headphone options to use when listening to music, so sound quality is not a major factor. I mostly want to be able to use them to hear VoiceOver. Stereo is also not a requirement. Since I'll be using them outside, I'd like them to be water resistant. They don't have to be water proof, but I don't want to worry about them if they get a little rain or sweat on them. I wear hats when it's raining, so I'd like something that's not over the head. I'd like to wear them under a hat with a brim that goes all the way around my head. I'm not too rough on things, so I'd like them to be durable, but they don't have to be super tough. The only thing I've read about the Aftershokz Bluez that give me pause is the noise bleed. Ideally, I'd also like to be able to use them in meetings, to check on notes, appointments and the like, without bothering those around me, but I usually use ear buds similar to those from Apple right now, and I could continue to do that if the bluez won't work out in that environment. From what I've read, the Aftershokz Bluez seem to meet my needs, but I'm wondering if there's something else I should be considering. For example, I had a one ear bluetooth LG headset that went around one ear and just rested outside the ear canal, which might also do the trick. Unfortunately, they don't take a charge any more. I'm curious if there are any other options like this, and how these headsets, which just sit at the entrance to the ear canal (similar to Apple's ear buds), compare to these bone conducting options. Do these open ear bone conducting headsets really give you more environmental awareness than say the Apple ear buds? thanks for your input. -- Christopher (CJ) chaltain at Gmail -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: Itunes issue
The issues depend on your screen reader. With Nvda for example I had to refresh its virtual buffer and for best result I even had to activate focus mode to complete these verifications. I'm using jaws. The curious thing is, my phone doesn't prompt me for payment information. My computer does. Something, is not quite making sense. Need help with the Facebook messenger's voice recording feature
Hello. Every time I try to use this feature it freezes my IPhone 4s. What can I do to make this not happen besides not using it? I like the feature because it tends to get my messages across faster when I'm in a hurry. I can hear others when they send me clips, and can record clips but once I do that and let go of the record button voice over freezes majorly. Anyone have any idea on how I can downgrade to the last facebook messenger before this build? Or how I can write to the developers to get this fixed so it won't freeze voice over? It is one heck of an annoying bug. Re: How long for an app purchased by iPhone to be available for iPad download?
There is the possibility that it just simply does not work for the iPad so therefore doesn't download it. I know the majority of iPhone apps work on the iPad but then there's always a few exceptions and some. On 28/11/2013 21:39, Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D. wrote: Hi, I bought the Vintage Radio app mentioned earlier today from my iPhone and installed it.
