By default locking the orientation is done via the side switch located on the right. You can change this behaviour under Settings. For what it's worth it can either lock or unlock orientation or mute/unmute the device. On 26 Oct 2014, at 23:59, Beverly reesesw...@gmail.com wrote: I am wanting my iPad mini in portrait mode. Re: IOS 8.1 on IPhone 6
Apple vis has a thread where they talk about the glitches on iOS 8.1. I would consider reviewing that and then determine whether you want to upgrade or not.if some of the tasks that are listed there and you use it, you may want to hold off. Ok, since you are UK, as I am, you might want to check out 3/Three's deal, I'm told it is very good. Check out GiffGaff as a PAIG. Check out the 2nd hand buy/sell lists over here, like Recycle-it and Thebargainstore on yahoogroups.co.uk. also, since we are both in the market, we have found an eBay supplier of Class A refurbs for a little over £300, including 1 yr warrantee. They're still £549 off Apple direct. I'll consult with 'er downstairs, sorry, 'er in bed; about the eBay supplier. Finally, www.preloved.com is a fee-free ad service and found a good few there too, though an entirely different risk aspect to trading blind on a site like that. eBay does at least offer some safeguards. So does paying by PayPal if you use this latter suggestion. £300/350 is about the target price for a basic 5S in good condition. Re: suggestions for bluetooth keyboard needed
Depends where you are and how luggable you want it. Mine was from a specialist supplier in the UK, and it is full size with function keys lined up in blocks of 4 along the top, just like a real Windows keyboard. The gutters between keyboard sections are there too. Can't remember name of it now, just where I bought it from and quite cheaply considering. Otherwise, you'll get directed to the Amazon basic BT keyboard which is generally accepted as plenty good enough and very good for the price. Re: suggestions for bluetooth keyboard needed
Ahaa, now I don't like the Apple one, for the reason originally given by the questioner; too smooth and flat to maintain accurate location for long. Ok, we know it can be done, some are better at it than others; I'm one of the others, so get things more tactile, clunky even, it suits my fingers; that's what my computing career was brought up on. OT: does anyone remember PC keyboards that had just 10 function keys to the left of the main letter keyboard; none of those along the top. Or: the Sun Spark keyboard that had function keys in both places, all along the top and down the side. Specialised UNIX keys no doubt. Re: Apple TV Amazon Prime Video
Hi, The way that I tend to airPlay things is as follows: 1. Ensure Apple TV is powered on connected to yoru network. 2. Open the control center on your iPhone. 3. Re: third party keyboard
I think it pretty much already settled down. Let's hope every one else just uses the delete key and let's it die. Raul can't be monitoring the list every minute of every day, so everyone needs to be responsible and know when to let things go. Let me take my hat off to Sieghard who handled this personal attack so well. I only hoep I'm as gracious as he was when I get these attacks myself in the future. BTW, this doesn't mean I agree with Sieghard and his views on Apple and security. I think this argument that Apple is just doing everything it can to make the device as secure as possible is a bit over stated. Devices can be made secure without locking them down. Locking them down is a cheap way to improve security. Apple also isn't a philanthropic organization. They're a company out to make a profit in a capitalistic market. IMHO, much of what gets attributed to them around security and ensuring the best customer experience also has a healthy dose of self interest and protecting their own products and revenue stream. I'm not knocking Apple for doing this, but it isn't always driven by selfless philanthropic motivations as some people seem to think. Finding the What's New info for an app in iTunes 12
Hello Listers, Maybe somebody has figured out a way to get this information, but I so far have not figured out where to find it. Just to clarify, I am using iTunes 12 on a Windows 7 PC with Jaws, mostly using the Jaws 16 Public Beta). I used to be able to go through my list of available app updates and by tabbing a few times after selecting an app I was able to hear the What's New information for the app. I would assume that this information is still there, but Jaws appears not to read it. I tried to right click on the app which does bring up a context menu which includes a Get Info button, but this also does not seem to give me access to any of the app information. I know I can easily read this using the App Store app on my iPhone, but I also keep a lot of apps updated in iTunes which I don't have currently downloaded to my phone and make it a habit to check what is new in these apps when I update them in iTunes. If there is no way to get to this information I'll write to Apple Accessibility about it and maybe also send a message to Freedom Scientific since I am not sure if this would be something Apple needs to fix or if it is something which needs to be fixed in Jaws. That depends on the code you use. In fact, the reason there's no reference on the phone is that it uses standard rules, so a book on UEB or grade 2 is what you want. RE: Using dictation in emails
Hi Sandra, I can't explain exactly why you are having such bad results, but one thing I can tell you is that those little sounds are SIRI writing your text as you dictate it. I have a 5S and apart from the much better responsiveness of SIRI when dictating, I found no differences between iOS 7 and 8. As for your text getting Sent when you tapped Cancel I can only assume that maybe at the moment of your tap focus changed, I certainly have not ever experienced anything getting sent or processed when I tap cancel. There could of course be quite a difference in SIRI performance between Ireland and Canada and there are so many other variables. Maybe turn SIRI off and back on and also do a reboot of your phone to see if that will have any positive effect. Also, do you have any other keyboard languages installed? I have German installed and every so often after writing something on the German keyboard I forget to change it back to English and then when I dictate something all I get is complete gibberish because changing keyboard languages/layouts also causes dictation to work in that language. When I discovered this a couple of years ago I was of course super happy because it makes it so easy to just switch the keyboard to German and dictate in that language. Accessibility of the Freading App for Public Library Books?
Hi, folk, I think I know the answer to this, but thought I'd ask, just in case. Has anyone used this app for reading Adobe DRM books for public library reading? The controls seem accessible, but the text is not. Is there a setting I can change, or is it a lost cause for the moment? I'm in a book club, and have finally gotten signed up for Kindle unlimited. Fortunately, the book we're currently reading is in this Kindle program for no extra charge, so I ended up using that instead. RE: Sounds Question
Hi Allen, This has been brought up in connection with selecting a default sound for emails where the behavior is the same. This is obviously a bug Apple needs to fix, but for now I found you can work around this by not trying to swipe to the list of tones. Just double tap on the button where you select the sound for text messages, then touch the screen somewhere in the middle so that focus is placed into the list of tones. For me at least this allows me to then swipe left and right and find the tone I want and I was even able to swipe left all the way to the Back button and then forward again without getting kicked out. It appears you only get kicked out when you immediately start swiping right. Let us know if that worked. RE: Deleting apps with VoiceOver
Hi Marissa, The process is the same as always, you double tap and hold on an app until it says :Moving followed by the app name. Then you double tap again on the app and you will be prompted to delete the app. Now, having said this, there is a limitation to this in iOS 8 which is a known bug and which has been discussed at various times since the launch of iOS 8. Most people can't move or delete apps which are in the last row of any home screen, the row just above the dock. Some people can move/delete some of the apps others none of them. On my 5S for example I have KNFB Reader, Whats App, Skype and Voice Dream Reader in the row above the dock and they are in that order from left to right. For some reason I can move the 2 apps from the right just fine, Voice Dream and Skype, but I can't do anything with KNFB Reader or Whats App, double tapping and holding on either one of them does absolutely nothing. If, however, I double tap and hold on a different app, both KNFB Reader and Whats App will also go into edit mode and while I still can't move them, I can double tap them and the delete confirmation comes up. I would try and double tap and hold on a different app and then double tap the one you want to delete. I am of course assuming that the app you want to delete is in the last row on your home screen. If that is so you can also move other apps into that row in order to force the app you want to delete up to another row or onto your second home screen. As long as the app is not in the last row everything should behave as it always has. RE: confused on how to put documents into an app using a pc running iTunes 12
Hi Michael, OK, hopefully I can explain this well. The way this works in iTunes 12 is that by default you have Music, Movies and More on your main screen. I might be missing something here, but I already customized this so I can't remember if there was anything else. Anyhow, tab to More and press enter, then arrow down and you'll find other things in a list view such as Audio Books, Books, Apps, Podcasts etc. When you get to Apps you could just press enter and then tab and you'll find your app updates and so on. If you want Apps to be a radio button like Music and so on on the main screen, go to the very end of that list view where you find Edit. Now tab until you find a button also called Edit and activate it. Next tab and you'll first go across a bunch of read only fields, then you will hear checkboxes which are either checked or unchecked and after each checkbox you hear the corresponding item, e.g. music, movies, TV shows, apps etc. Just remember that you need to check the checkbox before the item, so if you want Apps to be on your main screen, tab until you hear Apps, then Back tab once and check that checkbox. When you have checked or unchecked all you want, tab until you find the Done button and activate it. I find it easiest to always start at the same point of reference and a very convenient place for that is the search box in iTunes which you can always go to by pressing Control+F. From the search box 2 tabs will put you on the Music radio button and any other items you checked will appear after that. Also keep in mind that the shortcut keys for going directly to your various libraries in iTunes 12 work even better than in iTunes 11. The shortcuts are Control+Number keys in the number row from 1 to 0, they are as follows: Control+1: Music Control+2: Movies Control+3: TV Shows Control+4: Podcasts Control+5: iTunes U Control+6: Books Control+7: Apps Control+8: Tones Control+9: Internet Radio, maybe this is iTunes Radio in countries where it's available, can't say because it's not available in Canada Control+0: iTunes Store As far as transferring books to Voice Dream, once you are in apps it should be the same as before, tab to the file sharing area, select Voice Dream from the list of available apps and go from there. Re: PBS APP
In the extreme left side on the upper portion of the screen are several icons grouped in a vertical manner. The second icon is where you can hear about local programming, the fourth one down is a favorites list that can be created and the fifth and last icon is where you create your profile and sign in. The search feature is on the upper right section of the screen and just to the right of the search function is the information button where you can email your feedback to pbs. I need advice about RSS reader, please help.
Hello list, I think I have asked before about all this, but some of my e-mails have been lost, so I'll try again. I have iphone and Ipad and I am looking for RSS reader with the following Functions: 1. The function to delete read or seen feeds. I mean I want to be able to delete my feeds after reading them so it won't fill up my phone. The ideal situation would be not to have RSS feeds stored on my devices, but in case it is not possible, the deleting function would be fantastic. 2. The function to kind of synchronize my either read ur unread RSS feeds. To explain it better, Let's say, for example, I will have the same RSS app installed on the Iphone and on the Ipad. When I open RSS app and read an article on the Iphone and delete it, then I open RSS app on the Ipad all the same article I have read on the phone would be deleted and won't appear as a new feed. Something very similar as ifyou're using e-mails and imap on a few devices and when you delete an e-mail on one device, it would synchronize on every single device. 3. And the last function is to be notified of new feeds. I am not sure if something like that is possible on I-devices. But wen I was using RSS reader or better to say RSS plugin with Miranda software for computer, I was notified of new RSS feed. I have Lire and Newsify installed. Does either of these have the functions mentioned above? If so, could anyone, please, give me step-by-step instructions how to set it up? Thank you for your help in advance. RE: native braille input character cording
Using US English braille for my encoding, I can also generate an at sign by hitting dot 4 twice. In this encoding, you can press dot 4 and another character, and that character will yield a modified value. The unmodified value for many of the characters are accent marks. The modified values include many familiar computer braille characters and some numbers if they weren’t already available. From memory, here is what happens when I press dot 4 followed by these characters: 156: colon 146: per cent 346: plus 12456: right bracket 126: less than 345: greater than 25: colon 6: comma There are others, I’m not being systematic here. Re: all incoming mailbox op Iphone
I think the term is all inboxes. in the list of mailboxes, the top level, there is an edit button, so use it. In there is a list of things that show on the main list of inboxes, and whatever. All inboxes in an item you can double tap on to select, or unselect if you don't want it. I just unselected mine and selected All Unread instead. RE: suggestions for Bluetooth keyboard needed
Hi, I am using a Sharkk with two K's Backlit keyboard. The light is more or less not essential for me but that is in the name since Amazon has several models and that is the better of them or so I am told. I know of several others who like theirs as well as I do. It is about halfway between the size of a full sized keyboard and one of those little miniature keyboards that were all the rage a year ago, Laughs! I couldn't even figure out how to hit the home keys on those little mini keyboards and I have pretty long, skinny fingers. This one has no numeric keypad but I suppose neither does the big Apple keyboard that I now have paired with the Apple TV. And this Sharkk backlit BT keyboard will also work with windows if I so choose. I forget the cost but I think was about $40 or less. If there is no way to get to this information I'll write to Apple Accessibility about it and maybe also send a message to Freedom Scientific since I am not sure if this would be something Apple needs to fix or if it is something which needs to be fixed in Jaws. hi, This openion ight be late but, I went from a 4S to a 6+ just because I don't upgrade often and I wanted the best phone at hte time so that it'd last as long as possable before ios would leave it behind. I would suggest that it is more important over the long run to have at least a 32gb phone than it is to have a 6. Although we have Apple Pay in the U.s. many of us can't use it because our banks don't support it yet. I will also say that even though people say the difference in the battery life between the 5s and 6 is not that large, I find it to be quite significant. The difference in price between the two phone should only be $100 which I know can be a lot of money. The bottom line is that you need to decide which of the feature changes you care about. I fully expect that I will upgrade again next year, but with Apple Pay taken out of the equasion there really isn't enough reason to upgrade from a 5S to a 6. As far as how much of a compelling reason Apple Pay is for you, Andrew, that is entirely up to you. I am very intriqued by it and feel it is very well thought out and implemented based on what I heard about it. I wanted a 32 GB 5S but I settled for 16 because it was only $100 so I only had to pay about $40 for it plus $15 for the sim card from Telus. As for processors, I'm not a power user as well. I don't use Safari because I have a Mac to surf the internet with. So the A7 chip is good enough for me. As long as I can use Alex on my phone, that's good enough for me. Yeah sure, the A8 chip on the 6 and 6 Plus sounds good, but like Sieghard said, I don't think there would be any improvements to speed. Also, we in Canada can't use Apple Pay, which is one of the biggest features of the 6 so there's really no point. I'll worry about upgrading when iOS can no longer be upgraded on my 5S. some rather big Focus 14 blue issues with iOS 8.1
Has anyone noticed this issue when using the focus 14 blue ever since upgrading to iOS 8: when, for instance writing this email, when you’re done writing, or maybe even sometimes in the middle of writing, anything really, the braille display will get stuck and totally lose focus, so much so that you can’t even move back using the panning buttons. i tried un-pairing and re-pairing the focus display, turning on and off bluetooth, and while sometimes this works, this last time it didn’t work. also, for those in the US, when reading a Braille file in the BARD book, using the R key for going to the reading window, writes an R into the document, obviously not writing in the app, but making any navigation keys, N for next, P for previous ETC., unusable. Has anyone else had these issues, and if so, is there a workaround for them? if not though, what do I do to remedy this? it’s making my use of the focus 14 a right chore, more trouble than it’s worth, and all the other cliches. thanks for any help! -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: suggestions for bluetooth keyboard needed
No, neither the K810 nor the K811 has a NumPad. They are basically the same size as the Apple Wireless keyboard, but as Raul pointed out, the physical slider switch to turn them on or off beats the button on the Apple Wireless keyboard hands down and the ability to pair it with, for example, an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and an Apple TV rocks. The K810 is basically the same keyboard, but it is made for Windows, e.g. it has a Windows Key and Alt Key instead of Command and Options. I accidently had ordered the K810 at first, but since I was strictly looking for a keyboard for my iPhone and Apple TV I ended up sending it back (I had also bought it via Amazon) and ordered the K811 instead. Another advantage is the fact that it has a built-in rechargeable battery and it uses a standard micro USB cable to charge. In the case of a keyboard which uses very little power I think that's nicer than dealing with 2 AA Batteries as is the case with the apple Wireless keyboard. When it comes to more expensive, premium keyboards I would definitely recommend the K811 although my experience has only been with the Apple Wireless keyboard and the Logitech K811. Re: suggestions for bluetooth keyboard needed
It is safe to conclude that number pads are not included in this keyboard form factor. It is rare to find a laptop with an additional numpad, so it is probably rare if not impossible to find a keyboard meant to be portable to come with a numpad. Remember, the goal here is small, so adding a number pad will increase the size of a portable keyboard, which goes against the mindset of manufacturing such a device. Joseph the free tech guy! entering my e-mail address on a web site
Hello everyone, I have a question and I hope I can explain it correctly. When I go to enter my e-mail address on some web sites, if I am using a blue tooth keyboard, I can't type. I just hear the knocking noise. Then if I try to use the braille input, same thing. If I use the regular apple keyboard on the phone, I am able to type. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Re: entering my e-mail address on a web site
Hi, Candy, When you use an external keyboard, there's a mode called QuickNav. This is the mode that lets you use the arrow keys on the keyboard to work the rotor. There is a bug in iOS8 that requires you to turn this mode off once you enter an edit field. You do this by pressing both side-arrow keys on the hardware keyboard until you hear QuickNav off. At this point, you can begin typing.
