Plea for more descriptive subjects

2018-08-07 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I know this is really the job of the moderators, but I already asked Mark to
remind people about this, and he hasn’t.

It is so much more helpful to use more descriptive subjects on your posts than
something like “Question” or “My phone won’t” because those shorter subjects
don’t really give any idea of what your post is about. Remember that your post
goes into the permanent archive which is an important resource for this group,
and your message may not be found by people searching that archive unless the
subject is clear.

My apologies if I’ve overstepped, but my patience ran out.
Jeffrey

Subject: Fleksy VO Coming Back as FlickType

Hello,

I'm posting this to both viphone and iDevices.

Those of you who ever experienced the original Fleksy app later renamed Fleksy
VO will be excited to learn that the app is coming back renamed FlickType.
Those who don't know what I'm talking about should sign up as beta testers of
FlickType and give it a go and submit your feedback. You can visit its website
atwww.flicktype.com where there is a link to submit
an email to sign up as a beta tester.

The original Fleksy which was released about 2012 came out when Apple did not
allow third party keyboards. It was a separate app that presented a keyboard at
about a third of the bottom of your iPhone screen in portrait mode. The keys
were oversized in a high contrast presentation for those with any vision and
there was no spacebar. Any content produced with Fleksy had to be copied and
pasted into whatever app you wanted to send the text in such as your Mail or
Messages app. FlickType continues in the same vein since it uses the original
Fleksy source code which went into the public domain after Pinterest acquired
the Fleksy Keyboard and the original Fleksy VO was no longer supported.

What is great about FlickType is its predictive engine. You simply start typing
where you think the keys you want are located and do a single finger swipe
right when you're done. FlickType will announce the word it thinks you wanted
and more times than not will get it right. If it's not right, simply do a
single finger swipe down to cycle through its other choices. These choices are
all presented audibly and when you hear the correct one, you just start typing
the next word. You don't need to insert any spaces since FlickType does that
automatically. When you type the last word in the sentence and FlickType has
announced it, simply single finger swipe once again and FlickType will place a
period at the sentence end. You simply start typing the next word and FlickType
will automatically capitalize it. Only letter keys are presented on the main
FlickType keyboard which makes it very easy to rapidly type your text with only
a single finger. To access other keys such as numbers or symbols, you do a 2
finger swipe right or left to cycle through these. To capitalize a letter such
as a proper name, single finger swipe down after you've entered the letter and
it will be capitalized. Any words or names you enter manually can be added to
your custom dictionary by doing a single finger swipe up after FlickType
announces the word. Developing a complete dictionary is highly recommended
since that is what feeds FlickType's predictive engine. When your typing is
done, do a 2 finger swipe up to access the FlickType menu where your text is
reviewed for you and you can access the menu choices to copy it for pasting in
the app where you want it to go. It is very easy to learn and I strongly
recommend those unfamiliar with it to try it since sometimes there is just no
substitute for typing even though dictation is very handy.

The FlickType developer who is the original Fleksy developer as I understand it
has said they hope to have a FlickType iOS keyboard at some point. Personally,
I'm not too fussed about whether they ever do this since my experience with
Fleksy was that it became much less usable and efficient in my opinion once it
became an iOS keyboard. I find that even with the FlickType separate app and
having to copy and paste its output as was the case with Fleksy VO that I can
still output text much more quickly than with either the standard iOS keyboard
or with the Fleksy keyboard.

Here is a link to the AppleVis site announcing Fleksy becoming the latest
inductee into the AppleVis App Hall of Fame for those wanting to review a
little history:

You sure can know if you are in the video.

After you take your picture, turn on Narrator.

After Narrator, focus on the picture file, and press shift+caps lock+D.
Narrator will use an on line service to describe the picture enough to know

It told me something like:

Only Narrator, built in Windows 10 does this.

Finding a misplaced app on the iPhone

2017-10-31 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello list,

After upgrading to 11.1, the clock app, which I had as the last app on my home
screen, has hidden itself somewhere, and after searching high and low, I still
can’t find it.

I am able to bring it up using handwriting, but I want it back where it belongs.

I believe there is a gesture that can be used in the app switcher, or perhaps
in the handwriting results list that will tell me what screen and/or folder the
app is hiding in. Can someone please tell me what that gesture is?

Thank you all, and thank you for all the information you’ve provided about IOS
11. I’m very grateful to have avoided the pesky issues with the email app by
reading this list.

I received this on another list and thought many here would appreciate the
information.

SUBJECT : New website launch

The new NLS website is currently scheduled to go live at the longstanding NLS
URL of www.loc.gov/nls

this coming Sunday, July 9th.There will be no
change to the URL for the homepage. Your bookmarks to the longstanding NLS URL
for the homepage will still function correctly and take you to the new site.
The longstanding URL for BARD login will also remain exactly the same. No
changes have been made to BARD or the NLS catalog. The site has also undergone
repeated accessibility and screen reader testing here at NLS and out in the
field.

Please be aware of the following issues and activities during the switchover
period of three days, from Sunday the 9th through Tuesday the 11th.

1. The old website-the one we're all familiar with-will continue to exist
through October (at least) and our patrons can continue to use it while they
gradually become familiar with the new site.

Its URL, however, will change: the old site will no longer be at
www.loc.gov/nls
, but rather at www.loc.gov/nlsold

. There will be a prominent link on the homepage of
the new website-on the left-hand side, under the box of "Quick Links"-so that
patrons can jump back to the homepage of the old website if they wish to.

If they are on the old site, there will be an equally prominent link so they
can jump to the new site.

2. On the new website, the "Search" field at the right top edge will be
optimized only once the switch of URLs is made on Sunday and Monday. For that
reason, it may be a couple days before it is fully functioning. Patrons can
use built-in navigation on the new site to find what they are looking for
during this brief period. We appreciate your patience during the time required
for the "Search" to become fully optimized for searching the new site.

3. During the same three-day period, for the most visited areas of our
website, we will be embedding new internal URLs and redirected URLs so that
patrons can easily find what they are looking for. Again, we appreciate your
patience as this process is completed.

4. We will be grateful for your feedback about any issues you encounter, or
suggestions you can make. Please send them to d...@loc.gov
  and
ms...@loc.gov
. We will log and prioritize those changes we cannot
make immediately so that we can iterate on them continuously in the weeks to
come.

I was able to use the double-tap and hold technique to get the settings and
play buttons to undim, but going to the playback screen, was unable to find any
button that played my recording.

RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-03 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Having started this thread, I thought I should provide some closure about what
I've recommended to my clients. The explanation that the over-the-air updates
were pulled, but that iTunes updates were still available seemed to be a
bandaid solution to me, so I recommended that they consider upgrading their
phones from 5's to 7's. These are elderly people, but not hurting financially,
by any stretch of the imagination.

Their primary concerns seemed to be about needing to use the connecter into the
power jack for a patch cord while driving, but I think they'll be willing to do
this, once they get used to the idea. The husband has normal vision, and
connects his phone via blue tooth, and they don't want to mess with having a
second phone trying to talk over Blue tooth.

Sometimes it's really hard to give up technology that you love a lot, but I
think they'll be willing to move ahead.

Thanks to all on the list who provided answers to my inquiry.

As multiple articles describe, Apple has apparently pulled the over the air
update to iOS 10.3 for the iPhone 5 and 5C for now. Whether this is permanent I
have not read anywhere and according to one article I read you can go ahead and
still update an iPhonen 5/5C to 10.3 with iTunes.
Mike, just out of curiocity, if you have a 5S and also a 5C, why would you use
the 5C instead of the much nicer 5S?

Did you see the following from ILounge?
iLounge Mobile Edition
Apple pulls over-the-air iOS 10.3 update for iPhone 5, 5c; iOS 10.3.2 seems to
end support for them Apple has pulled back the over-the-air update to iOS 10.3
for iPhone 5 and 5c devices without giving any reason, AppleInsider reports.
The update was available for a few hours before mysteriously disappearing,
despite there being no noted outcry of users who had tried and failed to
install the update on the devices. The update can still be installed through
the standard process using iTunes, and seems to function fine on an iPhone 5c.

In a related development, The Apple Post has discovered that the beta version
of iOS 10.3.2 appears to end support for devices with 32-bit processors — like
the iPhone 5 and 5c. The beta only contains restore images for 64-bit devices,
hinting at the possibility that 32-bit devices are about to lose support. Apple
announced back in 2014 that new apps or app updates would have to support
64-bit processors, and recent speculation has swirled around iOS 11 ending
support for 32-bit devices. A warning dialog discovered by developers working
with the iOS 10.3 beta stated that apps that have not been updated to include
64-bit support “will not work with future versions of iOS.” Given the new
findings in the iOS 10.3.2 beta, the change could come sooner than expected. If
so, the 4th generation iPad would also be unsupported as it features a 32-bit
processor.

RE: Is IOS 10.3 available for iPhone 5?

2017-04-01 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hi Sieghard,

I thought I had read that the 5 was supported, so was puzzled when it did not
show up under software updates on my clients’ phones. We were going through the
recommended process of backing up their phones, emptying the ap switcher,,
turning off their phones for 30 seconds, and then updating, but both their
phones insisted their software was up to date, even though they only have
version 10.2.1. Oh, and yes, they were both plugged into live power and
connected to WI/FI at the time.

I know sometimes Apple rolls things out geographically, and they are in
Georgia while I am in Arizona, but I thought by now the whole U.S. would be
covered.

They may be able to stop att an Apple Store on Sunday, so perhaps they will
have an anser for us.

I’m glad you have written proof from the Apple website that the 5 is supported.
Maybe they won’t think I’m totally bonkers.

Thanks,

Jeffrey

Hi Jeffrey,

I am not sure why your clients don’t see the update, the iPhone 5 is
definitely still capable of running iOS 10, only the iPhone 4S and older
devices are no longer compatible with iOS 10.

Can you let us know if they have iOS 10 and don’t see the update to 10.3 or do
you mean they are still on iOS 9 and don’t see an option to update to iOS 10?
Make sure they indeed have an iPhone 5 because support for the 4S definitely
stopped with iOS 9. They should probably make a backup, close all apps and then
reboot the phone and try again, also make sure they are connected to Wifi.

Feliciano, if you don’t believe me that the iPhone 5 can have iOS 10, here is
a list of supported devices copied directly from Apple’s website:

RE: iCloud on Windows and iPhone Interfacing

2017-03-25 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Thanks Mark, yes, I am keeping only the one contacts file on my computer, and
it's in the iCloud section of my Outlook folders. Although I have an iCloud tab
in the 2016 Outlook ribbon, the only button that isn't dimmed is the refresh
button, and pressing it just dumps me back down into whatever note I'm writing
at the time. Seems like there ought to be a trigger somewhere to make the sync
happen.

Will take your suggestions to Google on the issue.

Hello Jeffry,

As I do not know what version of Outlook you are using, let me state that in
addition to configuring your iCloud Control Panel as Sieghard has indicated,
you must also make certain that you are accessing the iCloud Contacts in your
Outlook application.

In short, one can have as many Contacts folders in Outlook as one likes but
only the one created/linked to one's iCloud account is synchronized.

Sometimes, it would be so much easier to explain these kinds of things via a
conference call instead of attempting to do so via email.

Just do a quick Google search on using iCloud contacts in Outlook version x,
where x is the number of the version of Outlook you are using, and you should
find detailed explanations that should help.

iCloud on Windows and iPhone Interfacing

2017-03-25 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello,

I noticed that the contacts on my iPhone do not reflect the changes I've
been making in Outlook contacts. But, hwen I open the iCloud program on my
Windows 10 desktop, I find nothing to initiate any kind of syncing. I do
have bookmarks and contacts checked, so that looks right.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

VoiceOver in left ear only, sometimes

2017-03-20 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Has anyone else experienced this? Sometimes when I plug in the connecter for
my headphones, VoiceOver only speaks in the left ear, or perhaps more
accurately, the balance shifts way over to the left-hand side, maybe about
10:30 on a clock dial.

This happened on my iPhone 6+, beginning in around IOS 10.1 or so, as well
as I can remember. I thought it was specific to my device, but since then,
I've gotten an iPhone 7, and it does the same thing.

Thankfully, it's easily remedied. Dumping VoiceOver and restarting it always
puts things right, but I haven't seen anything about this on the list, and
it's hard for me to believe I'm the only one having this happen.

Thanks,

Jeffrey Turner

BARD Mobile might work again...but you might want to wait

2017-03-09 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I was just able to log on to the BARD site, but it was sluggish as all get
out. No way to know if it's extreme traffic from all the pent up users
hitting the site all at the same time, or residue from the systems problems
that caused the outage.

I'd recommend waiting a while before trying BARD mobile.

RE: Bard Mobile app question

2017-03-07 Thread Jeffrey Turner
The Bard website is experiencing system problems, so the Bard Express program
won’t work until they are fixed.

This afternoon’s update said they expect it to be back online Wednesday
afternoon, but Monday they said it would be today, so we’ll just have to wait
and see.

Subject: Bard Mobile app question

Hi,

I’m trying to get reacquainted with Bard Mobile.

Last week, I went in and successfully added a book to my Wish List and then
downloaded it and played it without problem.

Yesterday and today I have gone in to try to find another book. When I click on
Get Books tab, I then go to theGo to Bard site, but after I double tap on this,
I get nothing more than an In Progress indication that eventually times out.

I’m properly signed in, at least as indicated by the account information listed
under Settings tab.

Is there something up with the site, or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks for any help, Keith

Hello Everyone,

As with many things in life, it's all a matter of opinion.

I can tell you that of all the 20+ Bluetooth headsets I've owned throughout the
years, Apple Airpods are my absolute, without a doubt, favorite.

I am amazed with how seamlessly they interface with iPhone. I absolutely love
the fact that I can effortlessly switch from a single-ear to two-ear and back
to a single-ear configuration, on the fly.

The auto-ear detection is as close to magic as I've yet experienced on a
Smartphone.

If I am playing a song or listening to a book/podcast with Airpods, all I need
do is to remove the Airpod from my ear and playback will pause and not resume
until I place the Airpod back in my ear. Amazing!

My favorite feature of Airpods, however, is how beautifully VoiceOver switches
between Airpods and iPhone.

With iPhone in my breast pocket, for example, and an alert comes in, that I
want to explore privately, I simply place an Airpod in my ear and sound
automatically transfers from the phone to my ear; when I'm done, I simply drop
the Airpod back into either its case or a pocket, and sound automatically
reverts back to iPhone.

This may be difficult to believe but last night, I panicked when I could not
find one of my Airpods only to have a sighted friend inform me that it was in
my left ear. I know, I couldn't believe it either. Talk about being
embarrassed; but they really are that comfortable. smile)

Mind you, I am using Airpods with iPhone 6 Plus, only, so I can only imagine
how much better they perform with newer iPhone models.

I think Airpods are well worth their price and that Apple, once again, has
ushered in a new era of technology with this most innovative accessory.

Hi Eric,

Good choice, I think the current Airpods are quite a rip-off and in fact I was
at an Apple Store today to buy a headset for my wife as an anniversary present
and I was looking forward to checking out the Beats Solo and walked away deeply
disappointed. I am in Canada so the Beats Solo here is $329.95 + taxes and
while they sounded OK I could simply not believe such a large and, according to
Apple, advanced headset has no volume control. First the Airpods have no volume
control and now the Beats Solo also has no volume control, if this is the
wireless future Apple invisions they need glasses. I ended up getting her a
pair of the new BeatsX since she prefers earbud style headsets anyways over big
clunky ones. As for the Solo I can only say that in addition to the lack of a
volume control the sound is also just OK, I mean it's good but not special for
the price. I have listened to many a headset that costs between $150 and $200
Canadian and think they sounded just as good.
Another thing I noticed is that the canadian price for the BeatsX is a lot more
favourible than that of the Airpods. If I am not mistaken the BeatsX in the
States are $149 and the Airpods are $159, a $10 difference. Here in Canada the
BeatsX are $179 and the Airpods are $219, a $40 difference in our currency. If
I use the current exchange rate and convert $149 for the BeatsX to canadian it
works out to about $195 Canadian, but Apple Canada only charges $179 so
compared to the US price it's actually a good deal. If I convert the $159 US
for the Airpods to Canadian it is $208 or $209 so at $219 Apple put a 5%
upcharge on it at least based on the current exchange rate. How a $10 US
difference works out to be a $40 Canadian difference when $10 US is about $13.2
or $13.5 I don't know.
All in all I think that currently you can get a much better bang for your buck
if you look at third-party headsets and the Apple W1 chip to me seems very much
overrated. In fact, apart from the admitedly simple pairing process and maybe
the fact that any other Apple device that is connected to the same Apple Id is
supposed to pair I don't see a big advantage.

 Hello List,

I purchased one of these $39.95 adapters directly from the Apple Store so I
could both listen to and charge my iPhone 7 using my wired earpods. The
adapter works well for the most part but I'm having an occasional issue with
it. I leave it attached to my lightning USB cable which is plugged into my
computer and at least twice, iTunes hasn't recognized my attached iPhone 7

Other than that, the adapter has worked well with my iPhone and all the
earpod buttons work well with the adapter.

facebook on IOS10

2016-10-12 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hi,

I have an inaccessible screen on my Facebook app now, which I am told says I
need to go into the settings app on my phone, and manage my passwords from
there. Once I get there, everything looks right to me, but there is a delete
this account button to choose.

Could it actually be that I have to delete this entry from my phone in order
to use the Facebook app now?i find this to be very counter-intuitive, and I
really don't want to delete my Facebook account. It's not clear to me if
this deletes the Facebook account from their servers, or just a newly
unnecessary feature from my iPhone settings.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

Jeffrey Turner

feature on. If I turn on raise to wake and I pick up my iPhone and rest my
finger on the home button it will open up to the icon screen. If I turn off
raise to wake then rest my finger on the home button it will not open my
IPhone. So I am thinking that you have to have the raise to wake feature turned
on for the rest finger on the home button to work. If I am wrong please correct
my thinking.

Hi,

I believe you have to have fingerprint access turned on for this to work. At
least scanning for info on this seems to indicate that is how it works.

Hello Jeffrey,

In an existing contact, if you are adding a number, just double tap on add
phone, and it will put you in an edit field to enter the new number.

Now if you swipe left from the edit field, you will be on the label of the
number. Just double tap on the label to bring up a pop up window that will
allow you to change that label to whatever you want. iPhone is one of the
choices. Just double tap it to select it.

Hope this helps,

Chris

RE: itunes 12.3.4 or whatever it is isa mess

I totally support the idea of a blitz of Apple to bring their attention to the
iTunes and iCloud accessibility deficiencies. This is absolutely unacceptable
given how much horn tooting they are publishing about having blind people

I'd write to both, Apple feedback and Apple Accessibility.

I'm still stunned by the response I had around this that it is up to the third
party screen reader companies to make it accessible.

Perhaps if enough people write, they will realize it is actually their
responsibility.

Hi Larry and others,

There was an iTunes update yesterday, the current version is iTunes Version
12.4.3.1. Unfortunately little seems to be fixed and certainly newer versions
of iTunes 12 have taken steps backward with respect to accessibility. If you
use the column browser with Genres, Artists and Albums, these list views are
not read (at least not by the latest version of Jaws 17). 2 or 3 versions ago
it would read them and, for some reason, say “L1” in front of whatever else it
said, now it will just say List View.

I am going to write to Apple accessibility since while I use iTunes less
frequently in connection with my iPhone, I still may want to use it at home on
my PC and of course there are some tasks like syncing Ringtones etc. one can
only do with iTunes. As Brian Tong from the AppleByte Podcast always says when
Apple has dropped the ball on something, I would call this a “bad Apple”.
Hopefully others will join me in writing about better iTunes accessibility.
There are I think around 2,000 members on this list now and even if only 1 out
of 4 took the time to send a message, maybe if Apple Accessibility received 500
messages they’ll understand that this should be addressed. It would certainly
be more effective than only 5 messages. And while people are at it, why not
make the subject “Accessibility of iTunes and iCloud.com <http://icloud.com>
which Apple seems to think are not important to blind users”. I still don’t
understand how Apple has done nothing to make the iCloud.com
<http://icloud.com> website accessible after so many years.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi. I thought I read that the latest ITunes was relatively fixed so I went and

Hi Jeffrey,

I’ve unsubscribed from the VIPhone and Mac Visionaries lists from my gmail
address and tried resubscribing from my new one, anto...@accesstoplaces.com

The sign up process requires me to write a personal reply saying why I am
subscribing to the list. That message is supposedly reviewed by a list

I get a message a day or two later saying my message was denied and I cannot

I’ve written to the list owner at VIPhone, but this has not been resolved.

Would you please either forward this message to the list on my behalf, or reach

I appreciate your help, or any suggestion.

Fleksy has two different keyboards, the default one which includes a spacebar
and has a layout similar to the standard iOS keyboard and minimal one without
the spacebar which resembles that of the original Fleksy app later renamed
Fleksy VO. If you're using the default spacebar Fleksy keyboard, there is a
button immediately to the left of the spacebar that should allow you to switch
to the standard keyboard. What is presented with this button depends on your
Fleksy keyboard settings so you might have to rest your finger on that button
and slide to hear the options it presents. If you're using the minimal Fleksy
keyboard, you'll need to do a two-finger swipe up in the keyboard area to
switch to the Fleksy spacebar keyboard where you can access that button to the
left of the spacebar.

2015-12-17 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello List,

I have recently spotted a return to mail, and sometimes a return to messages
button in the status bar when I have opened a link in either of those aps.
It's tucked way up in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, and returns
you right back to where you came from, without having to exit Safari, go
back to your home page, and then reopen the ap you were in. Maybe this is
something everybody already knows about, but I don't remember seeing it on
the list, and stumbled on it by accident myself, so wanted to share in case
others hadn't seen it.

Jeffrey

RE: BARD Mobile Finally Recieves an Update

2015-10-20 Thread Jeffrey Turner
When I click on the sleep timer to activate it, the book starts playing, which
seems like a bug to me, but may be a misguided feature. To increment the sleep
timer, you must double-tap repeatedly on the button, but it’s hard to hear what
the new setting is because the book is blabbing away.

Others can presumably reproduce this behavior?

Thanks Anna,

I have tried this in the past with the previous version of BARD and it never
worked. I also have tried clearing the app switcher and rebooting my phone and
then opening only the BARD app and it will still get confused and start playing
music. :( This is all before the latest BARD update so I will try these work
arounds with this newer version and hope for the best. :)

pause and resume playback. It almost always started playing music. So, I just
gave up. I was hoping that since they fixed the two-finger-double-tap that the
pausing with a microphone or headset would also be fixed. The only time I can
use the BARD app is if I know I will absolutely not be interrupted or I am
actively zooming through a magazine and my fingers are constantly on the phone
speeding through tidbits I want to read. However, forget listening to a book
while folding clothes and such. :( I do use the BARD app to browse the latest
books. I do love using the app for that. Now, with the ability to more easily
add and remove books from the wish list, the BARD app is even better for me for
checking out the latest books available.

One thing that was not fixed and is fairly minor unless you use the Apple

focus when interrupted. By this I mean if you're listening to a book and
then get a phone call which you answer with your earpods remote button,
after the call ends, pressing the remote button to begin playback again will
cause whatever had focus before BARD Mobile to start playing, In my case,
it's usually the music app.

In other words, I would dictate a paragraph or two, it will drop off the last

Mixed review of update to Downcast?

2015-05-19 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hi,

I believe downcast was updated during the past few days. I was very glad to
find that the percent played indicator works again, but rather dismayed that
4 of the 8 segments of the PBS News Hour from last night did not play to
completion, even when restarted a second time. Is anyone else seeing this
behavior with the updated Downcast on other podcasts? It's hard to know if
the glitch is with Downcast or the PBS News Hour.

Thanks,

Also, if you go to Settings, Sounds and go into where you change your

The search field in the App Store still shows whatever you searched for

The keypad tones still disappear a while after my last reboot of the

This is much more annoying than it used to be, but not nearly as annoying as
having to dismiss the reply dialog when what you wanted was to delete the
message.

 Hi Davy,

All gone is a touch optimistic. Apart from the two issues you
mentioned, some people still can’t clear notifications and the button
still says “Confirm Clear Section” where it should just say “Clear
Section” and then go to “Confirm clear section” once you double tap it.

Also, if you go to Settings, Sounds and go into where you change
your default ringtone or text tone, you are still kicked back to the
home screen if you start swiping right and once you get onto the
vibration picker. There is an easy work-around for this which is not
to swipe, but to first touch the middle of the screen and then swipe,
 but it’s still a bug.

The search field in the App Store still shows whatever you searched
for even if you clear the field with “Clear all” and even though the
field visually is empty if you double tap Clear All twice Voiceover
will read your last entered text.

The keypad tones still disappear a while after my last reboot of the
phone, once again, not a big deal, but a minor bug.

These are some bugs I can think of right now, others have been
mentioned and Apple still has a way to go.

Difficulty saving new event using Fantastical2

2014-11-11 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello,

I bought Fantastical2 based on a lot of favorable remarks here, and am
mystified as to how to save a new event once I create it. I can't find any
save or done button, and scrubbing only gives me the choices to either
cancel and discard, or continue editing.

Can someone solve this mystery for me?

Hi there. Look on the upper right corner and there was a button labeled add.
When you double tap it, the event will be saved. You want to make sure that the
event is written in such a way that fantastical will know what you're talking
about. For example if I want to have lunch with Betty this Friday at noon, I
would say something like, lunch with Betty this Friday at noon. Imagine how
easy that is.

Voice Dream Reader in Locked Screen

I'm used to getting the above subject error message when charging my iPhone

However, I'm now starting to get it from time to time when charging using
the Apple cable that came with my iPhone.

I'm curious with what others have experienced with their Apple cables and
how long they've lasted. I take extremely good care of my stuff almost to

Is anyone else getting this message and under what circumstances? How well

Seeking collaborators on efficient VIPhone list reading

2014-06-05 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello List Members,

This list is an extremely valuable asset, and I thank the owners,
moderators, contributors and readers that make it work. It has been my
primary tool for learning how to use my iPhone, which I wouldn't dream of
living without at this point in my life.

However, no matter how well moderated the list is, there are inevitably
messages filling the list I don't care about. In fact, I'd say on a normal
day, no more than 10 messages peak my interest.

This message, for example, is not likely to interest many people, but, if
you are in my boat, and are interested in culling the valuable content from
this list and weeding out the complaints, opinions, one-liners, repetitive
beginner questions, and cutting your reading to a quarter of what it now is,
please write me offline.

My idea is to share the burden among 4 like-minded, committed list readers.
Rather than reading through each message every day, we would all take one
week, cull the valuable content, and only forward the good stuff to the
other three participants. We could discuss ahead of time what constitutes
valuable content. This being an opinion, not everyone will agree on what is
valuable, but I'm sure we can work it out.

I hope three people out there will join me and give this a try, and I
really, really hope this doesn't generate unnecessary list traffic.

Warmly,
Jeffrey Turner

FW: The Joey voice skips in voiceDream

him is that he skips over text periodically, and that never happened to me

headings in the first container, and reads through the contents of the
second container nicely. And, it has the advantage of only requiring one
gesture. Try it, you'll like it!

Latest Kings Corner Update Work-around

2014-02-28 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello King's Corners fans,

I have just played a game successfully using the latest update, and would
disagree with the previous posts recommending that we avoid the update. It
is different, but still works just fine with a bit of extra tapping.

After you use the gesture to move a card on top of the target area, just
double tap an adjacent field and you will hear the sliding sound indicating
that the card has moved. Admittedly, it's different from what we're used to,
and the older way may have worked better for us, but it does still work.

I would love to see the developer implement the technique used in the
Chess-wise and Shredder chess games, where you would double tap a card to
select it, then double tap the target field, and the card would be moved. I
think this would be a lot easier than double tapping and holding, and then
sliding to the target.

iTunes not finding downloaded music

2014-02-23 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello,

Could there be any setting on my iPhone I could change to affect a problem I
am having with iTunes? Any music I buy directly with my phone that's
downloaded later by iTunes, when I try to play it using iTunes, I'm told the
music cannot be found, and I'm asked do I want to locate it? Well, it's
right there, no problem at all to find, as far as I can tell, right where
iTunes should be looking for it. It's just a bother to have to go through
each album, telling iTunes where the music is, when it's quite obvious it's
right where it belong. Could I have changed an iTunes setting somewhere?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

RE: iOS7.0.6

2014-02-22 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Lest people are hesitant to upgrate to the latest version, here is an
article explaining why it was released:

Apple security flaw could allow hackers to beat encryption

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2014 01:04:28 -0500

Yahoo! News

By Joseph Menn

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A major flaw in Apple Inc software for mobile
devices could allow hackers to intercept email and other communications that
are

meant to be encrypted, the company said on Friday, and experts said Mac
computers were even more exposed.

If attackers have access to a mobile user's network, such as by sharing the
same unsecured wireless service offered by a restaurant, they could see or
alter

exchanges between the user and protected sites such as Gmail and Facebook.
Governments with access to telecom carrier data could do the same.

It's as bad as you could imagine, that's all I can say, said Johns Hopkins
University cryptography professor Matthew Green.

Apple did not say when or how it learned about the flaw in the way iOS
handles sessions in what are known as secure sockets layer or transport
layer security,

nor did it say whether the flaw was being exploited.

But a statement on its support website was blunt: The software failed to
validate the authenticity of the connection.

Apple released software patches and an update for the current version of iOS
for iPhone 4 and later, 5th-generation iPod touches, and iPad 2 and later.

Without the fix, a hacker could impersonate a protected site and sit in the
middle as email or financial data goes between the user and the real site,
Green

said.

After analyzing the patch, several security researchers said the same flaw
existed in current versions of Mac OSX, running Apple laptop and desktop
computers.

No patch is available yet for that operating system, though one is expected
soon.

Because spies and hackers will also be studying the patch, they could
develop programs to take advantage of the flaw within days or even hours.

The issue is a fundamental bug in Apple's SSL implementation, said Dmitri
Alperovich, chief technology officer at security firm CrowdStrike Inc. Adam

Langley, a senior engineer at Google, agreed with CrowdStrike that OS X was
at risk.

Apple did not reply to requests for comment. The flaw appears to be in the
way that well-understood protocols were implemented, an embarrassing lapse
for

a company of Apple's stature and technical prowess.

The company was recently stung by leaked intelligence documents claiming
that authorities had 100 percent success rate in breaking into iPhones.

Friday's news suggests that enterprising hackers could have had great
success as well if they knew of the flaw.

Chess-wise 3 available in App Store

2014-02-11 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello List Members,

A new upgraded version of Chess-wise can be found by searching for
Chess-wise 3. This week, the in-app purchase price is only $1.99. Next week
it goes up to $3.99.

This upgrade fixes some issues that appeared when IOS 7 came out, and
provides other enhancements the developer believes justifies the charge.

I like the ability this app has for setting up positions on the board and
playing from those positions. Although Shredder has this ability, it doesn't
work with VoiceOver, so that feature's no good to us.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Possible Ssolution for VoiceOver Volume Problem

2014-01-28 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello,

After reading on this list about the problems people were having with the
VoiceOver volume getting stuck at 35% with the only fix to reset the phone,
I disabled the VoiceOver volume changed using buttons.

Then, the other night, while playing iFarkle, I needed to lower my VoiceOver
volume, and did so by swiping up with two fingers to initiate a SayAll of
the screen's content, and pressing the volume down button until it got down
to where I wanted it. Now, I realize I shouldn't have been able to do this,
given that I had changed the setting, but I didn't think much about it at
the time. When I left the game, I tried to reset the volume to a normal
level, and couldn't do it using the same technique. So, I went to the
voiceover settings, looking for somewhere to jack the volume up again. I
couldn't find anything, which makes me wonder how you're supposed to be able
to adjust the volume of VoiceOver if that setting is turned off.

Then, when I got sick of the annoyingly low volume, I decided to go back
into iFarkle and try to adjust it there, and lo and behold, it worked. I was
able to turn the volume up, using the volume up button while VoiceOver was
speaking. So, apparently this setting is not consistent while within certain
apps.

I thought people who are stuck with their volumes low might want to try this
approach for resetting their volume back above 35%. It sure seems easier
than resetting the phone. I haven't tested this within other apps, but was
really glad to find it worked in iFarkle.

RE: Stereo Headset

2014-01-16 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I have another question on a related topic. Does anyone have any experience
with the LG HBS730 Tone+ stereo blue tooth headset? It's available from
Amazon for about $45 and a client just told me about it today. It is A2DP
compliant, so should work with VoiceOver and play content from Audible.com,
Bard mobile app, and VoiceDream. It comes with a sort of three-quarters of a
circle collar that has the controls and rests on your neck. The earpieces
are ear buds that stick directly in your ear, are connected to the collar by
short wires because they don't have to reach very far, and attach
magnetically back to the collar when you're done with them in your ears.

I'm curious if anyone has tried them yet, and whatever feedback you might be
willing to offer. Or, has anyone tried other LG blue tooth products?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

I bought a small Bluetooth speaker from Walmart that you could clip on your

3/4 inch thick. It is made by Phillips. They came in black, red and white.
It has a little thing on the side you could clip on a clip. It also has
buttons on it for answering the iPhone and talking through it. I use it all

Bluetooth would be great. There are the flips headphones that you can lay on

your shoulders and use as speakers, but they were very expensive. I'm not
sure of the quality either.

VoiceDream Tip for Latest Update

2013-10-25 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hi,

I've been in touch with the VoiceDream developer to report that I can't use
the gestures in the latest release to move back or ahead by sentence. The
documentation says to use a two finger swipe left or right, and I couldn't
get either to work.

He responded that VoiceOver hijacks the gestures he tries to implement, but
that there is a viable work-around. Flicking up or down while focus is still
on the play/pause button works the same way the fast forward and rewind
buttons used to. So, IMHO, it's a cleaner interface with the same
functionality.

I discovered for myself that you just swipe up or down on the navigation
unit button to change that setting.

Enjoy,
Jeffrey

IOS Installed Voices in VoiceDream

2013-09-26 Thread Jeffrey Turner
Hello,

I just experimented with the IOS installed voices in voiceDream mentioned
earlier on this list. I enabled the U.K. English, Austrailian English, and
U.S. English voices. By just doubletapping on the enable buttons, they very
quickly became available to me.

I suspect though, that these are not the HQ voices, because they sound very,
very poor compared to the other voices like Paul I paid a couple bucks for.

My question is, should I expect the HQ voices to automagically download
themselves to my phone when it's plugged in, locked, and connected to WI/FI,
or are these voices as good as it gets?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

I agree, Rose. I'd love to get back the weather widget, but in general, the
old notification center was so much better. The new one is kind of cluttered
while giving less relevant information. How do you leave it, by the way?
There isn't this option close notification center anymore.

Is there a way to remove the weather widget from the message screen? I
never near a temperature, or if I do it was 20 degrees off, it takes up
space and while I am at it I don't need to see the calendar unless I have
events on it, then what I need are the event and time. I guess I am saying
I want the old message center back, at least is served a purpose. Of
course, it won't happen, will it?

Maybe there tweaking the web services. Here is what it says in my case. By

Cloudy currently. The high will be 12°. Partly cloudy tonight with a low of

RE: Is this a bug in VO?

2013-06-09 Thread Jeffrey Turner
A similar thing just happened to me with two Capital One aps. One is
specifically for the Capital One 360 checking account, and the other is a
more generic ap allowing access to Capital One credit cards as well as the
360 checking account ap. Capital One, in its infinite wisdom, named both aps
just capital One, and changing the name of one ap was reflected in the name
of the other ap as well.

I ended up deleting the more specific, 360 checking ap and am not bothered
by the phenomenon, but wanted to confirm that this can happen.

Hi Sandy,

Are you using VoiceOver's labeling function to name the folders? If so, use
the iOS method of naming your folders and you should be fine. When you
create a folder, there's a text box near the top where you can type in a
folder name. I've always named my folders this way, and I've never had one
folder renamed when I rename another.

Best,
Anna

I would say that is a bug and it has happened to me and others with apps
and has been discussed a few times. For me it happened when I had downloaded
a camera app at one point which is called I think One Touch Camera. It takes
a picture or series of pictures as soon as you open the app. Anyhow, when I
installed the app, Voiceover read it simply as Camera just as it does with
the stock Camera App. So I thought I relabel it One Touch Camera and sure
enough my stock app now was called One Touch Camera as well.

At least one other person I remember said the same thing whe he or she
tried to relabel a Weather app which was called Weather just as the stock
Weather app. She gave it another name and now the stock Weather app also was
called that.

I did at one point write to Apple Accessibility about this since I think
it is definitely a bug and I would encourage you to do so as well. I think
in any case that a developer should not be allowed to give his or her app a
Voiceover label that is already used by a stock app or another app. I'm sure
there must be a way for the database of apps even though it is very large,
to be checked when an app is submitted to Apple. I believe a sighted user
has no problem because the app icon of let's say the Camera app and the One
Touch Camera app look different.

2013-04-16 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I have looked very carefully again, and still cannot find it. In rob's
answer, he said to find the advanced settings, and I can't find that either.
I am able to open the individual account screen that specifies your User

nothing that says Advanced, or refers to archive vs. delete messages.

So, If you're off hold now, and have time to find it, I'd really appreciate

entry for that song in both Music and Muxic. When Music hits that song, it
does nothing--just sits there not knowing what to do. When Muxic hits it, it
bounces you out of the app. So, if your Muxic is crashing, this is something
you can at least check for.

The update released today in the US app store is supposed to fix crashing
issues, according to the developer. I've also turned normalization off and
have experienced less sluggishness. I won't say it is gone altogether, but
definitely not nearly as much. I'm also able to use other apps while Muxic
is going in the background, which before there was a delay with this. I
would love to be able to use normalization though without the sluggishness,
since not all of my tunes are at the same levels. Perhaps the next iPhone
will assist with some of these intensive processes.

Yes, iFarkle is much more sluggish when I listen to music with the Muxic

I've noticed on my iPhone4 that when Muxic is open, Voiceover is a little
slower to respond and other things are slower to happen, both in and out of
the muxic app. Perhaps this is because my 32 GB iPhone is nearly full of
music and Audible books, but I still find it interesting that Muxic is
slowing things down, but when I close it out of the app switcher, the
processes return to their normal speed.
Anyone else seeing this on an iPhone4 running iOS 5.1.1?

I would assume you sync it normally, and it'll just pull it from the
library the normal music app uses. I could be wrong though since I
 don't have the app.

You are absolutely right. This was pointed out on the list yesterday.

Does anyone have a method for removing recipients from a thread that started
with multiple recipients? Can you send a message to two people, get a reply
back, and continue on with only one of the two?

Hi Jeffrey,

I can easily sent a text message to multiple recipients using the native
Messages app. Tap Compose at the top right of the screen. Type the name or
part of a name and select that person from the list of choices. Now, for
example, you selected John Smith, it will now say :To and if you flick
right it will say John Smith button. If you flick right again you are once
again in an edit field and you can type another name and select it or, if
you flick right again, you have the Add from Addressbook button. Here you
can also pick a name and add it. If, for example, I add Sarah Green then
it will say To and after that John Smith button, Sarah Green button.
Now I can type my text and send it and it will send the message to whoever
you added. The conversation will be in your converdsation list and if you
want to send another message to the same group of people all you have to do
is double tap on the conversation, type in a new message and send it.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hello,

I've posted in the past about the Looktel money recognizer being unable to
read any of the currency I throw at it. As of yet I've never, ever had a
bill be spoken. It doesn't matter if I put it on a table, hold it in front
of the camera, move it around, expose different parts of the currency, and
so on.

The object recognizer also doesn't work particularly accurately and often
gives unexpected results. A good example is that I've actually put, well,
bills, into the database, and these are always mixed up.

You don't suppose I could have a subtle problem with my camera, do you? We
don't notice anything when taking photos, but maybe there's a subtle scratch
on the camera or something? Do you have any ideas why the Looktel apps would
be behaving so oddly?

Best,

Grant

Make sure VoiceOver is focused on one of the items along the top of the
phone. I use the time. Do your 3-finger swipe down from there, and it should
work.

Hi,

I'm doing quite well with most of the iPhone gestures, except the one that
enables one to activate the notification center. I know you are supposed to
swipe downward with three fingers, but I can rarely get it to work or
replicate it once I have succeeded. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Requirements for notification of email arrival while phone is locked

2012-04-25 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I get CNN notifications all the time while my phone is locked. A friend
wants to receive mail notifications while his phone is locked, but when I

Can anyone let us know what is needed to provide notifications of incoming
email while the phone is locked?
