RE: [EXTERNAL] RE: netatmo problems

2020-01-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

When I got my first Netatmo the app was almost unusable and back then (I think
it was around 2012 or 2013) their head developer was a Spanish guy named Carlos
who fortunately was very interested in making this accessible. He gave me
access to Beta versions via Testflight and for a few months I spend a lot of
time testing and suggesting. It's actually been on my To Do List to see if he
is still there and to contact him about this issue. Switching pages and swiping
works just fine, but it would be nice if that information was on the screen
where you could also explore it more easily by touch.
Also, it would be nice if historic data was accessible, e.g. yesterday's
minimum and maximum temperatures etc. which currently cannot be accessed with
Voiceover.

By the way, if you are for example, on your main indoor module, do you get
minimum and maximum temperatures or does it go from current temperature
straight to CO2 level?
If you don't get minimum and maximum, then next time you swipe and get to the
current temperature just do a double tap and that will permanently reveal
minimum and maximum for that day.
This applies to any of the modules.

Lastly, apparently the newer Netatmo Stations are home Kit compatible, not sure
if you have to do anything, but you should be able to ask SIRI for information
and have it displayed in the Home app.
If you own an Alexa device then there is also a Netatmo skill and it works
reasonably well.
If I want to know the outdoor temperature I ask Alexa the following:

Alexa, ask Netatmo what the temperature is outside.
Or I can ask:
Alexa, ask Netatmo what the temperature is in the bedroom (or kitchen or
downstairs)
I named my modules Kitchen (for the indoor module of the main station), my
other modules are Bedroom and Downstairs and I actually bought a third indoor
module a while back, but haven't set it up yet and my outdoor module is called
"Deck".
However, if I ask for temperature for the deck Alexa say s it can't find it and
tells me I have modules called Kitchen, Bedroom and Downstairs, then it asks do
I want information for the first, second and third and I can say "second" and
it will give me the Bedroom, but for all indoor modules when Alexa answers it
will say "The temperature inside is, for example, 21 degrees, it will not
answer "The temperature in the bedroom is 21 degrees" or "the temperature
downstairs is 19 degrees".
My main station is too old to support Home Kit, maybe some day I'll buy a new
one and try to sell this one, but for sure I would wait for one of their 20%
off events and then maybe I'll use some of my Aeroplan points which also allow
me to buy Amazon gift cards since I think you can buy Netatmo through Amazon as
well.
I think Netatmo is still one of the best weather stations out there and while
some thermostats offer sensors you can put in different rooms, I haven't really
come across another actual weather station which gives you such a comprehensive
set of information especially if you do end up getting the full package
including rain gauge and wind gauge which I have. I still have to mount the
wind gauge properly on my roof, I asked a guy who does metal work and welding
to make me a 1 m tall pole with a V-shaped base which I can mount on the
ridgeline of my roof and which has a small plate to which I can attach the
little mount that comes with the wind gauge, but he didn't get it done before
the winter hit and while it hadn't snowed much, we did get a dump of about 8
inches yesterday so it's probably better to wait until April when the snow will
be gone and I can mount this properly and permanently. The same goes for my
rain gauge, I usually just have it on the table on my deck, but ideally it
should also be on a pole about 4 feet off the ground. Anyways, I always take it
inside in the winter since we rarely get liquid rain here between mid November
and the end of March and even if it does rain here and there, it often freezes
then at night and constructing some sort of heated surrounding so the snow
melts and the rain gauge can operate is entirely too much trouble.

Best regards,
Sieghard

2020-01-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith,

That is unfortunately how the app works, it could be better but it's workable
as it is.
The trick is that once you flick up for example to change from page 1 to 2 and
say from your main indoor module to the second indoor module, just start
flicking right without touching anything else.
Then the information of that module is read and the same applies if you have
extra outdoor modules like a rain or wind gauge.

hi, I have purchased a new Netatmo WeatherStation. I believe I have set it up
correctly. But when I go into the app, I cannot access reliably anything other
than the main weather station indoor module. There are options to switch pages
among one of four and 1 of 5, and when I do that, it quickly reverts to the
original page.
Is this app still usable with voiceover?

Also, I have the Netatmo Comfort app for my phone. on that, I can access only
my two additional indoor modules, but neither the WeatherStation indoor module
nor the outdoor module. Does this app still work, too?
Any help appreciated. Best, Keith

RE: Netatmo rain gage.

2019-03-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have both the rain and wind gauge.
The rain gauge is accessible, it gives you total rainfall, how much is coming
down per hour but just as with other measurements once the day is over you
can’t access the data from previous days.
Keep in mind that it needs to be properly installed on a fence, railing or a
free-standing pole and that it needs to be perfectly level for it to be
accurate.
Mine is currently inside as it is each winter from around the beginning or the
middle of November until the end of March or early April. It usually snows
during these month where I live and while it rains here and there if it happens
to warm up above 0, it usually goes below freezing at night and I don’t think
it’s that good for the rain gauge to freeze and thaw or to simply be out when
it’s minus 20 or 30 below as it was for a good amount of the last 3 weeks or so.

I still haven’t properly installed the wind gauge, it needs to be on a pole
preferably at least 3 feet above the highest part of my roof. In my case I’ll
probably put it on a 4 foot pole because we have years like last winter when we
had almost 3 feet of snow on the roof.
One thing I noticed is that while the wind gauge gives you wind speed, average
wind speed and maximum gusts, Voiceover does not announce wind direction. I
have to get a sighted person to look, but I assume that information is
displayed since when you install the wind gauge you have to do so using a
compass so you can point the arrow on the wind gauge to the North.

Sieghard

Hi all,

has anyone purchased the rain gauge?

Wondering how accessible that part of the app is with voice over?

Also can the measurements be changed to mm instead of inches?

TIA.

RE: Netatmo Black Friday deal

2016-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Pablo, Don and Jim,

Sorry, usually I do explain more about products I post, but I had a pretty busy
day today as I am in retail and all the stores in my little town are open until
11 PM tonight to kick of the Christmas shopping season. I've been here since 9
this morning so even now I'll be brief and would ask for you guys to simply
plug "Netatmo" or "Netatmo Weather Station" into Google, with a name like
"Netatmo" you are not going to get ambiguous results. Even if you search the
archives for "Netatmo" you'll bring up a bunch of posts with prior discussions.
In short, it is as the name describes a weather station. It consists of two
modules, one indoor main module which you connect to your WiFi and a secondary
outdoor module which is pre-paired out of the box with the indoor module. Both
modules measure temperature including the 24-hour minimum and maximum and
humidity. The indoor module will also give you a CO2 measurement, noise level
and barometric pressure.
You can buy additional indoor modules to put in other rooms or, for example,
you could have one upstairs, one downstairs and one in the garage, I think you
can add up to 3 additional indoor modules. There is also a rain gauge and a
wind gauge. Here a brief listing of features from Amazon:

· Made for iPhone and Android Weather Station: access to its sensors
from anywhere, at any time
· Temperature, Humidity, Barometric Pressure, indoor CO2 concentration
and Sound Meter
· Real time Notifications and Graphs for data history (record
frequency: every 5 min.)
· Connect multiple Stations to your smartphone and multiple smartphone
to a Station
· Lifetime free personal account for your data

On Amazon.ca there doesn't seem to be a deal so you may have to go to Netatmo's
site to get it, not sure about the US. The website of course is
www.netatmo.com.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hello Sieghard. I was mistaken about the buttons not being labeled.

I tried the program again tonight and had to reinstate the internal station
module as we have a new router. I also tried once again to connect the outdoor
module. It is definitely not working so I will have to contact Netatmo
directly about how to replace the outdoorbmodule. Sent from Bäry Abbott's

I noticed in the last update of Netatmo that some of the buttons were not
labelled.

Incidentally, do you know what the warranty is? My outdoor module did not
withstand the riggers of last winter as it became buried in snow. Despite many
attempts after battery replacement I have not been able to get it working. I
made sure that the batteries were inserted correctly and I tested them with a
battery tester. .

When I go to Amazon I see additional indoor modules but no outdoor module. I am

RE: Netatmo users: hold off updating to the latest version

2015-11-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Barry,

I actually can’t think of any unlabeled buttons in the last version, could you
give some examples I could pass along?

No, not sure about the warranty. As a retailer myself who sells a lot of higher
end product which comes with various warranties, I must of course say that if
it didn’t survive the winter why you didn’t try to deal with this as soon as
you noticed it wasn’t working. I do also think that is says in the instructions
the outdoor module should of course be outside but that it should be kept out
of direct sunlight (that can skew the temperature reading) and out of the rain
and, by extension I would think it should also be kept out of the snow.

I just brought my rain gauge inside today since while it may still rain a bit
in the next couple of weeks and occasionally throughout other winter months,
for the most part it will snow from now until the end of March and it will
often be below freezing and I just can’t see how it would be good for the rain
gauge if it had mosture inside which would then freeze, thaw, freeze again and
so on.

RE: Netatmo update fixes outdoor minimum/maximum temperature issue

2014-05-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jan,

There is some sort of forecast, but that part of the app is not accessible.
There are also some graphs and such when you turn the phone to landscape.
The basic readings are what is accessible, i.e. outdoor temperature, minimum
and maximum temperature from Midnight to Midnight, felt temperature,
humidity and pressure. Also the indoor modules measures indoor temp, minimum
and maximum, humidity as well as CO2 levels and it gives you a air quality
indicator for the room the station is in.

Currently this information is not logged so you would have to record the
readings as you are doing now. I was going to check with the developer to
see whether having a history of the readings is something they might
implement down the road.

I do know that a wind sensor is coming at some point, not sure about UV, but
I could see them adding that as well.

Hi

Thank you very much for this. What a very interesting setup? It might not
be cheep, but sounds worth every bit of money. Does all of the weather
station data get logged somewhere, so one can check it after a time? To me
this sounds amazing, and the kind of thing I enjoy using. At one point I
read something on forecasting, does it have some weather forecasting
abilities, or does this happen in conjunction with official weather
services? Thanks for answering all of this, making me more determined to
somehow get a station of my own.

Hi Jan,

That is no problem for the Netatmo Weather Station/rain gauge. The rain
gauge uses the so-called tipping bucket design and can measure from 2mm to
900mm rainfall per hour. Note, that's per hour not per day. 120 mm in a
day is a lot of rain, but the Netatmo rain gauge can handle it no problem.
Below is a link to a review which explains the tipping bucket design, the
rain gauge also shows how much rain was measured per hour over a 24 hour
period.

http://www.tuaw.com/2014/04/24/netatmo-expands-ios-friendly-weather-station-
with-rain-gauge/

The total investment is definitely not cheap. The main station with the main
indoor and 1 outdoor module costs $179 US and the rain gauge is $79 US. You
can also add up to 2 additional indoor modules which also cost $79 each. In
other words, the weather station with the rain gauge would be $258 and if
you added 1 additional indoor module it would be $337.

Hi

very interesting, this weather station. I was wondering about the rain
guage, would be interesting to know what happens when it gets full, before
the 24 hour period is up, when it empties itself. We had 120 mm (5 inches)
the other day within 24 hours, and of course I was not at home to empty my
normal guage. Will the guage empty itself when it gets full, or would you
miss the extra inch that could not be measured then? Just curious about
this, and would like to hear all your findings on this. I don't own a
station myself here, a bit difficult to get this here in South Africa, but I
am somehow wanting to get one, as weather always interested me. I keep a
very basic spred sheet with temperatures wind and rainfall for each month,
and a station measuring all of this by itself would be a great tool to have.

Hi

Thank you very much for that. Well, the important things are being done, and
that's what it is all about. No problem to keep on recording my data. The
wind sensor will certainly be a plus, as long as we can read all the
information on this. Would be interesting to hear your findings once you have
your rain gauge. Was wondering about the accuracy thing, was it 1 mm per hour?
So, would that mean that, should it rain for 5 hours, you could in theory have
5 mm to much or to little then?

Thanks all the same for a interesting topic.

Re: Netatmo update fixes outdoor minimum/maximum temperature issue

2014-04-30 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi

Thank you very much for this. What a very interesting setup? It might not be
cheep, but sounds worth every bit of money. Does all of the weather station
data get logged somewhere, so one can check it after a time? To me this sounds
amazing, and the kind of thing I enjoy using. At one point I read something on
forecasting, does it have some weather forecasting abilities, or does this
happen in conjunction with official weather services? Thanks for answering all
of this, making me more determined to somehow get a station of my own.

Regards

Jan

  Hi Jan,

That is no problem for the Netatmo Weather Station/rain gauge. The rain gauge
uses the so-called tipping bucket design and can measure from 2mm to 900mm
rainfall per hour. Note, that's per hour not per day. 120 mm in a day is a
lot of rain, but the Netatmo rain gauge can handle it no problem. Below is a
link to a review which explains the tipping bucket design, the rain gauge also
shows how much rain was measured per hour over a 24 hour period.

http://www.tuaw.com/2014/04/24/netatmo-expands-ios-friendly-weather-station-with-rain-gauge/

The total investment is definitely not cheap. The main station with the main
indoor and 1 outdoor module costs $179 US and the rain gauge is $79 US. You can
also add up to 2 additional indoor modules which also cost $79 each. In other
words, the weather station with the rain gauge would be $258 and if you added 1
additional indoor module it would be $337.

  Best regards,

  Sieghard

  Hi

very interesting, this weather station. I was wondering about the rain
guage, would be interesting to know what happens when it gets full, before the
24 hour period is up, when it empties itself. We had 120 mm (5 inches) the
other day within 24 hours, and of course I was not at home to empty my normal
guage. Will the guage empty itself when it gets full, or would you miss the
extra inch that could not be measured then? Just curious about this, and would
like to hear all your findings on this. I don't own a station myself here, a
bit difficult to get this here in South Africa, but I am somehow wanting to get
one, as weather always interested me. I keep a very basic spred sheet with
temperatures wind and rainfall for each month, and a station measuring all of
this by itself would be a great tool to have.

Hello Netatmo users,

For those who haven't noticed yet, Netatmo's update is now available in the
app store and as promised Voiceover once again reads outdoor minimum and
maximum temperature.

I am now looking forward to getting the rain gauge which shipped a few days
ago and hopefully will arrive next week. I'll post a review once I have it
connected to my Netatmo weather station and once it rains so I can test it!

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Netatmo update fixes minimum/maximum outdoor temperature issue and supports rain gauge

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marianne,

The Netatmo Weather Station is the product I have been posting about and it
is not a thermostat at all. I believe Netatmo also does make a WiFi enabled
thermostat, but it is only available in Europe, actually, I think it's
available in France where Netatmo is located and maybe in Germany and some
other countries, but not in all European countries. To my knowledge Netatmo
is not planning to introduce the thermostat to the North American market
where a number of WiFi thermostats already exist.

If you are looking for an accessible thermostat to control your heating/air
conditioning via an iOS app you should check out www.RadioThermostat.com. I
own 3 of their WiFi thermostats, they work great and I have had them for I
think at least 2 or 3 years now and they work flawlessly. The app is
accessible and you can buy the thermostat for $139 on the website, but I
have seen posts from others who own it and who say that in the States you
can often get it for $99 at Home Depot and of course it's also available on
Amazon.

The Netatmo weather station consists of an indoor and outdoor module which
measure temperature, humidity, air pressure and they also keep track of
indoor and outdoor minimum and maximum temperatures for the day (from
Midnight to Midnight) and the indoor module also measures CO2 level and
noise. You can add up to 3 additional indoor modules for $79 each to put in
other rooms in your house or the basement if you wish and the newest item
which is just now starting to ship is a rain sensor which keeps track of
aily rainfall. It is also $79 and the main weather station is $179, that's
your primary indoor module which has the WiFi connectivity built-in and the
one outdoor module.

A wind sensor is coming and while this is not a cheap device, it does work
well and Netatmo has done an excellent job to make the readings accessible.
As far as I know it is also the only weather station for iOS and you can
also access the information by logging into your account on the Netatmo
website. However, it's much easier and more accessible via the app.

Best regards,
Sieghard

No problem, just keep in mind that the rain gauge by itself won't do
anything, you do have to have the main weather station first, if you get
that and the rain gauge it would be a $258 investment and I think shipping
in the States is $8, so a total of $266.

Yes, in fact I just noticed it this morning. I thought maybe somehow my

Subject: Netatmo Rain Sensor has been released

Hello Netatmo Weather Station Users,

Just thought I let you know that the Netatmo rain sensor is now available.
You may have seen a recent update to the Netatmo app and if you checked the
What's New you would have seen that the main item was support for the new
rain sensor.

This means you can now have the weather station which consists of the main
indoor module and 1 outdoor module, you can add up to 3 more additional
indoor modules and now the rain sensor. The indoor module measures current
indoor temperature, minimum and maximum temperature for the current day
(from 12:00 AM until 11:59 PM), indoor humidity, CO2 level and noise (sound
meter is only on the main indoor module, it is not supported for the
additional indoor modules).

The outdoor module measures current temperature, Feels Like temperature,
minimum and maximum temperature, humidity and pressure. It also gives an air
quality value, but that is accessed from official air quality sensors so
depending where you are it may or may not be accurate.

Now that the rain sensor has been added the weather station is another step
to being more complete, as far as I know Netatmo will be releasing an
Anemometer (wind sensor) later this year or next year.

The rain sensor, just like the additional indoor modules, is $79, shipping
to Canada was $17 and I think in the States it is $8. If you already own the
weather station and have the app you can order right from there. I
discovered a button one swipe to the right of the Last Updated field,
Voiceover reads it as PluvioMeterStation button. Not sure what if anything
this means, but if you tap it you are taken to a page which starts with
Rain Gauge for the Netatmo Weather Station, there is a Close button at the
top right and information about the rain gauge including a message that says
you can preorder it and that it will be shipped within 15 days.

It also then says that it is in stock, that you can add 1 rain gauge to a
Netatmo Weather Station and it gives the price and an Add to Cart button.

I went through the ordering and check-out process easily, everything is
fully accessible and you can pay via Amazon EasyPay, PayPal or credit card.

Now, the warning I should give is that I have not yet spoken to Carlos, the
head developer, as to whether the readings from the rain gauge are
accessible for Voiceover users. I have emailed him and once I get a reply
I'll of course report what he said. I also ordered my rain gauge and provide
more feedback once I have it and connected it to my station. I am quite
certain that given Netatmo's commitment to accessibility that the
information from the rain gauge is or will be accessible, but for those who
want to be careful it might be a good idea to wait.

Regards,

Sieghard

to your WiFi and also maintains a connection with the outdoor module. When
you get the 2 units the outdoor module is already paired with the indoor
module, so once the indoor module is setup and connected to your WiFi and
you put batteries into the outdoor module (it uses 4 Tripl A) it will
automatically connect.

The rain sensor is a new item and completely separate, obviously it has to
be out in the open where the rain can be collected in the tipping bucket
design which automatically empties every 24 hours. The outdoor module needs
to be out of the sun and weather but outside of course to obtain accurate
temperature and humidity readings.

You can also get additional indoor modules which are the same as the outdoor
module as far as the form factor is concerned, but they will only measure
temperature, humidity and CO2 level and they also work on 3 Triple A
batteries. This way you could have your main indoor unit in the say living
room and you could have separate indoor modules in the basement and bedroom,
if you wish to keep track of temperatures and humidity there.

This sounds quite interesting. Is the rain gauge part of the outdoor

buy an outdoor module plus the rain gauge?

Now that the rain sensor has been added the weather station is another
step to being more complete, as far as I know Netatmo will be releasing an
Anemometer (wind sensor) later this year or next year.

Now, the warning I should give is that I have not yet spoken to Carlos,
the head developer, as to whether the readings from the rain gauge are
accessible for Voiceover users.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

Hello Seighard:

I have ordered my rain gauge as well. I do have a question though. I have
updated Netatmo on my iPod, but not on my iPhone. On my iPod with the newest
version, it shows no data available for minimum and maximum outdoor
temperature. My iPhone with the older version of the app still shows these
two readings correctly. Have you noticed anything like this after your
update?

Re: Netatmo - successfully setup 2 additional inddor modules

2014-01-03 Thread Tom Frank
I, too, really enjoy my Netatmo weather Station. Since I heat with wood, I
have the base station at the other end of the living room, away from the stove.

There is one major problem with the weather station; it doesn't lie. The
outdoor temperature is now fifteen below zero. I can't wait until July and
see if it will hit 70.

(though Sieghard provided some useful guidance!).

I am quite pleased that I now can monitor 3 different locations within our
home for temperature, and the outdoor temperature as well. We only have 2
zone controls in our house, for 3 living areas, and it’s sometimes a juggling
act to try to figure out what’s going on when one person is cold, another is
hot, and yet another feels the temperature is fine. The information generated
by these independent monitors, and easily accessible on my iPhone 5, is
 really valuable to me.

Re: Netatmo Weather Station and Indoor Modules Black Friday 15% off discount through 12/2

2013-11-29 Thread Joanne Chua
I saw a similar promotion thru Apple Store Black Friday promotion. It isn't
discounted or such, but you get a $25Apple Store give card with it. That turn
out to be around 15% to 20% credit.
That was in Australia Apple Store. So, my guess is that, you will get similar
promotion on Apple Store or Apple online store around the world today.

I have been Beta testing for them earlier this year and they made the

The setup process which was not very accessible at all at the beginning is
now also fully accessible. When I contacted them I was the first and only

One caution: if you still have a 3.5 inch device like an iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S

  Hi Sean Paul,

I think I'll make a little distribution list in Outlook with people I know
have the weather station or are interested and that way I can easily post to
the group as well as to that group of people which means it is less likely to
miss one of my posts. In any case, I will definitely let the list know when the
additional sensors become available although even now as it is the Weather
Station is very good, support for the additional indoor modules will most
likely not take long and I guess one advantage of buying a station with just an
extra indoor module is that you don't have to come up with all the money at
once, it's not a cheap accessory. On the other hand you can also spend several
hundreds of Dollars on a really good wireless weather station which only has
the outdoor sensors and an indoor station with a LCD screen which of course
isn't accessible and also is not accessible for a sighted person unless they
are standing in front of it.

I think Netatmo has a good thing going and as far as I know nobody else has
yet come out with a competitive product.

If anybody wants direct news about this let me know and I'll put you in my

Subject: Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules

Hello Netatmo users,

I just wanted to send a brief update for those who bought a Netatmo Weater
Station.

If you read my last message you are aware of the fact that Netatmo is now
offering additional indoor modules for $79. I received one of these which I put
in my basement after pairing it with my station. The pairing process was easy,
fully accessible and I am including a detailed step-by-step description at the
end of the message since this will only be of interest for those who have a
station and are planning to buy an extra module or modules.

I would like to point out that for the next couple of weeks the additional
module will not be of much use to a Voiceover user since the measurements it
provides are not yet accessible with Voiceover. I just received a message from
Netatmo's head developer, Carlos, and he said he will work on this and send me
a Beta version to check out what he has done shortly. If my past experience is
an indicator I would expect he will do this quite quickly and I will let
everybody know, of course after I give him my feedback he still has to release
an official update with those changes.

Neil had asuggested that it would be good if the Weather Station could
include pollen count and Carlos told me that this is something they will be
looking at further on down the road. I believe this year they are busy with
getting 2 more sensors released, a rain sensor and a wind speed sensor. Once
these 2 add-ons are available the Netatmo Weather Station will be as good as
just about anything that is out there but of course its other features like
being able to check the readings from anywhere in the world via the app make it
even better.

OK, here now the description/instruction regarding the pairing process:

Double tap on the Menu button at the top left, it becomes a Settings
button, double tap on that.

It will take a moment for the Settings menu to load since I believe it
accesses information online.

Now double tap on My Stations.

Double tap on Add/Remove a Module

On the screen that appears you will see a heading called Setup at the top
and a Next button to the right, double tap

What is meant by Plug in the Netatmo Station's big module? Does this mean to
USB connect the main station to the PC?

This info is very helpful. Once I hear from you the data from the accessory
module is read by VO, I'll be buying 2 modules.

Thanks. Keith

Hi Keith,

Sorry, it just means to make sure your main module is plugged in with USB
power to the wall adapter which is the suggested way to use it. It does also
have 4 Triple A batteries, but they are meant as backup power in case of a
power outage.

I also just realized that |I never did explain how the batteries need to go
in, well, I did actually explain it in one of my much earlier posts, but not
in this last one. I meant to open up the new indoor module just to make sure
I don't say it wrong and then add that in, but I sent the message and
totally forgot. I'll send another message with that information when I get
home a bit later.

I think I'll make a little distribution list in Outlook with people I know
have the weather station or are interested and that way I can easily post to
the group as well as to that group of people which means it is less likely
to miss one of my posts. In any case, I will definitely let the list know
when the additional sensors become available although even now as it is the
Weather Station is very good, support for the additional indoor modules will
most likely not take long and I guess one advantage of buying a station with
just an extra indoor module is that you don't have to come up with all the
money at once, it's not a cheap accessory. On the other hand you can also
spend several hundreds of Dollars on a really good wireless weather station
which only has the outdoor sensors and an indoor station with a LCD screen
which of course isn't accessible and also is not accessible for a sighted
person unless they are standing in front of it.

I think Netatmo has a good thing going and as far as I know nobody else has

RE: Netatmo weather station

2013-03-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

Sorry for the late reply, but in case you haven't figured it out already,
here is how the batteries should go in both in the indoor and outdoor module
of the weather station.

I assume you found the large round cover at the end of each module and that
there are 4 triple A batteries going into each, 2 openings with 2 batteries
in each. Since the modules are perfectly round, I'll describe this using the
clock face.

Turn the modules so that the 2 holes for the batteries are in the 6 o'clock
position (closest to you).

The 2 batteries in the left hand opening go in so that the little knob on
the battery is facing up.

The 2 batteries in the right hand opening go in so that the little knob is
facing down (the smooth end of the battery is up).

The indoor module should be plugged in using the included USB cable and USB
Wall Adapter, the batteries are for backup purposes only in case there is a
power outage.

Did you have to use the convenient OCR feature in Jaws to read the screens
of the setup wizard or did Netatmo make this accessible now?

Sieghard, Thanks for the tips on the batteries. The outside
thermometer works now. I did have to use the Convenient OCR to use the
network wizard. Did you have to do something to get the weather forecast
to come up? I don't have anything to tap on for the forecast. I'm
wondering if it's not available for where I live.

I can't wait for the rain and wind meters that will be coming this year.

RE: Netatmo weather station

2013-03-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kevin,

I don't think the forecast is in an accessible format just like the graphs
sighted people get in landscape mode aren't. I don't really miss the
forecast feature since I prefer to use Degrees which is a weather app
pspecifically for Canadian weather and it's very nicely accessible and
detailed.

It's good to hear that you were able to set it up using Convenient OCR, I
was able to do so as well, but it's definitely a bit of a guessing game and
I will try to lobby Netatmo to make the setup wizard accessible.

RE: Netatmo weather station

2013-03-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marie,

Just to answer your question about the indoor and outdoor module, no setup
is necessary, they are pre-paired and as soon as you put the batteries in
the outdoor module and the indoor module is plugged in they will talk to
each other automatically. The indoor module also takes some batteries, but
they are only meant to be for backup in case the power goes away or there is
a power fluctuation. The unit comes with a normal I think it's a micro USB
cable and it also comes with a USB wall adapter like you get with many
devices nowadays. Just plug the USB wall adapter in an outlet, plug the USB
cable into it and the micro USB plug on the cable into the indoor module and
you are done. I'll also check how the batteries go in, they are Triple A and
come with the weather station, and I'll let you know.

Sieghard, thank you very much for the info, looking forward to what you will
have to say when you reconnect the unit to your new router using your

I've read all the details about the station on the site and will definitely
buy it if you find it easy to set up.

How about setting the connection between the indoor and outdoor unit? Is it
done via your I device as well? Is it totally accessible? I'd rather not use
a PC unless it's absolutely necessary to do any of the setting up as my
version of JAWS is not as recent as yours and I can't update it easily. but
we won't go into that!

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Anyone else using the Netatmo weather station? any comments?/thoughts?

RE: Netatmo weather station

2013-03-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi marie,

Initially I couldn't get the weather station to connect to my WiFi and
thought there was a problem, but it turned out to be a bug in their firmware
which wouldn't let it connect to the specific setup I had with a regular,
non Wi-Fi enabled router and an Airport Express which I used to create my
WiFi. I ended up buying a new router and it worked fine although the setup
process on the PC with their wizard is not very accessible. It can be done
if you use Jaws 13 or Jaws 14 by using the Jaws convenient OCR feature, you
basically have to do the OCR on several setup screens and use the Jaws
cursor to click on stuff, far from ideal and somewhat tricky. It is,
however, a snap if you have sighted help, takes all of 2 minutes.

Now, having said this, I am actually once again changing my router in a
couple of days and because of it I will have to reconfigure the weather
station to connect to my new WiFi network. I was told by Netatmo that they
improved this process on the iPhone since you don't have to use a computer
to connect your weather station. You can also do it via the app, but in the
past this was also inaccessible. I assume a few more days won't matter to
you, so let me check if this works and how well it works and I'll let you
know. This initial setup is something you won't ever have to do again unless
you change your WiFi in any way and, as I said, the app for daily
use/checking of weather related information is now very nicely accessible.

Talk to you soon,

Sieghard

One thing I can report is that my WiFi connection problems were definitely

Hello List,

Just a brief update regarding the problems I've been having getting my
Netatmo Weather Station to connect to my WiFi.

I just received the following message from Netatmo support after they told
me earlier this week they would try and reproduce the issue by setting up a
network similar to mine with a Netgear router and Airport Express:

From: Netatmo Support [mailto:contact-supp...@netatmo.com]

Subject: RE: WiFi connection problem

Hi,

This short email to let you know we have reproduced the Wifi issue with an
Airport been set-up behind a Netgear router. I hope we will be able to
provide a fix next week.

Thanks for your patience

fred

I was hesitant to recommend the Netatmo Weather Station at first because of
the problem I have, but their support has been exemplary and somebody else
on the list also bought one and had no issues setting it up and I also
connected it to somebody elses WiFi easily (they were using an Airport
Extreme WiFi router). It is apparent that this only affects a small number
of users with somewhat unusual network setups and Netatmo is certainly doing
their best to fix that. Together with their willingness and promise to make
Voiceover improvements in their app I think this company definitely deserves
anybody's support. Of course not everybody wants a wireless weather station,
but if you do, Netatmo is currently the only one I know of that can be
accessed on your iPhone with an app.

And please, before you ask what the Netatmo Weather Station is, please
search the archives for Netatmo it's a unique name and all my posts were
in the last 2 or so weeks, so it should be very easy to find and I explained
it all before. You can, of course, always go to www.Netatmo.com and read up
about it on their website.

Sieghard

RE: Netatmo Weather Station WiFi connection problem

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

Most people I think have a router which nowadays also has the capability to
create your WiFi network. I have a router which does not have integrated
WiFi, well, at least I do now, next week I get new routers for my business
and home and they will also have WiFi. Anyhow, because my routers currently
don't have WiFi, I use an Airport Express which is plugged into the router
and which in turn creates the WiFi network. You can think of it like when in
the old days people had stereo amplifiers and separate radio tuners for AM
and FM radio. You had an amplifier and connected to it was a separate tuner
with a cable. Nowadays just about everybody has either a stereo or home
theatre receiver which is an amplifier that has an AM/FM tuner built into
it.

Similarly a WiFi capable router has the WiFi radio/component built into the
router, it's all in the same box whereas mine is a router and separate WiFi
unit (the Airport Express). Sorry for the long explanation, but I can't help
it *smile*.

Anyhow, if you have a router with WiFi at home which most of us do because
we have iPhones, you should have absolutely no issues with the Netatmo
Weather Station to connect to your WiFi. As I said, when I took it to the
store in my town where they sell all the Apple stuff, they connected it to
their WiFi and it was all done in 2 minutes. Just keep in mind that the
setup wizard is currently not accessible, so you would need sighted help,
but once it is connected the information is stored in the unit and you will
never have to do this again unless you change the name or password of your
WiFi network.

The iPhone app is mostly accessible, a bit cluttered and you currently can't
get the minimum and maximum temperature readings from the previous day, but
as I said before, the company is awesome and have told me they are looking
into making Voiceover improvements in an update in the next 4-6 weeks.

I will continue to report about the progress and will become one of their
Beta Testers although I won't be able to post much about beta versions of
the app officially as developers don't want that. I have, however, a good
feeling about these guys, they are responsive and willing.

Regards,

Sieghard

The iPhone app is mostly accessible, a bit cluttered and you currently can't
get the minimum and maximum temperature readings from the previous day, but as
I said before, the company is awesome and have told me they are looking into
making Voiceover improvements in an update in the next 4-6 weeks.

I will continue to report about the progress and will become one of their Beta

RE: Netatmo Weather Station WiFi connection problem

2012-11-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
home or office, you'll need to buy two full sets, each with an indoor
and an outdoor module. This is because, as noted above, the two modules are
pre-paired. A Netatmo representative told Macworld that the company is
considering offering outdoor modules separately in the future.

The only downside to this device is that you cannot see the current
temperature without using an iOS device (or a website). The system would be
a bit more useful if it included a small LED display somewhere on the indoor
unit that could display basic conditions, so you don't have to use your
iPhone or iPad just to check the outdoor temperature.

Bottom line

The Netatmo Weather Station is a bit pricey, but it's a very slick device.
With modern design, good accuracy, and an easy-to-use iOS app, it makes it
simple and fun to check the current weather, as well as to record and view
weather data over time. If you're a weather geek, you'll want to check this
out.

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for this. Have you become aware of any stated guidelines in the
instructions for how near the outside unit needs to be to the indoor unit to
establish and maintain that connection?

Thanks in advance. Keith

Hi Keith,

Here is what they say on the website:

Wireless specifications
Wifi 802.11 b/g/n compatible (2.4GHz).
Supported security: Open/WEP/WPA/WPA2-personal (TKIP and AES).

Wireless connection between modules:
915 MHz or 868 MHz long range 100m.

If you actually get 100 metres (330 feet) is something you would have to check,
but I'm sure in most situations you would have the outdoor unit between 5 and
20 metres away from the indoor unit and in any case, it sounds you have plenty
of range to place it anywhere on a standard town property.

Here is a review I found which I thought explains the device well and gives a
balanced summary about it's positive and negative aspects, keep in mind that
Netatmo only released this product a few weeks ago and I get the impression
they will follow through with what they promise which, among other things, are
additional sensors for measuring stuff like rainfall, windspeed etc. I should
also point out that what the reviewer said about the outdoor unit having to be
within range of your WiFi network is not correct according to what Netatmo says
on their website. It actually makes sense that it doesn't have to be in range
since the indoor unit is what connects to your WiFi and the outdoor unit is
prepaired with the indoor unit using 915 Mhz, this is a band that was used with
older cordless phones and I always found that these older 900 Mhz phones had
much better range. Here the review:

The Netatmo Weather Station is described as the first personal weather station
for iPhone iPad.
The Weather Station itself consists of two pieces of hardware, and the company
provides a free iOS app for accessing weather data from these devices.
Like a standard weather station, the Netatmo Weather Station has an indoor
module and an outdoor one. Each module is a sleek-looking aluminum and
white-plastic cylinder; the indoor module is six inches tall, with its outdoor
counterpart about four inches tall. The indoor module needs to be plugged into
a power outlet, while the outdoor module uses four AAA batteries. Though the
battery power means you can place it anywhere, you must position the outdoor
module in a location that's in range of your Wi-Fi network.

To set up the Weather Station, first you connect a USB cable from an iOS device
(running the Netatmo app) to the indoor module; the app transfers your
Wi-Fi-network settings and credentials from your iOS device to the indoor
module so it can access your network. The outdoor module is pre-paired with the
indoor module, so after tapping a few setup buttons and screens, the entire
weather station is up and running.

The Weather Station gets your geographic location from your iPhone, so the
system is able to determine your exact altitude for calibrating its
barometric-pressure sensor. In addition to pressure, the Weather Station
measures temperature, humidity, and, for the indoor module only, CO2 and
ambient noise level.

Once I set up the Weather Station, I found that it took a few days for readings
to stabilize. I already own a standard weather station, and there were fairly
large differences in temperature and humidity readings at first. But after the
initial-literal-acclimation period, the Netatmo's readings were close to those
of my existing weather station, which, thanks to recent professional testing, I
know is accurate to within 1/2 a degree.

To view current readings, you launch the iOS app, which shows all collected
data and, when you rotate your iOS device to landscape orientation, shows
graphs of data over time. The Weather Station takes automated readings every 5
minutes, so these graphs can show you detailed information if, for example, you
want to know what the temperature was at a particular time during the night. If
you want to take an instant reading of current conditions, you just press the
top of the indoor module.
A screen in the Netatmo Weather Station's iOS app
The iOS app is very well designed, letting you see all of the available data in
a glance. If you drag the horizontal bar (in the middle of the screen) upward,
you see more information, including the latest indoor CO2-leel and sound-level
readings; dragging the bar downward shows you weather forecasts for the next
three days, and you can swipe to the left to see an additional three days.
These forecasts-obtained over the Internet from weather-forecast sources-are as
local as possible, since the iOS app uses the precise location of your Weather
Station, and are updated every three hours.

You can also use multiple Weather Stations

will be able to run on your
iPhone or iPad previews of our application before they are actually released
on the App Store. This could allow us to have your feedback on the voiceover
implementation before we make the formal submission of the app on the Apple
Store. To allow multiple devices to run our preview applications, the
“testflighapp” procedure shall be run individually on each test device (for
instance, on an iPhone and on an iPad). If you have time for this we would
appreciate to have your feedback on our first implementations as they arrive
in the next few weeks.

Thanks a lot for your patience. I’ll come back to you as soon as possible
with a feedback on the Wifi setting issue once we have reproduced it here…

fred

10 minutes later I received a separate message from Carlos, one of their
software engineers, with instructions on how to setup a TestFlight account
so I can become a Beta Tester.

Needless to say, I am very happy about the level of support I am getting and
Netatmo’s willingness to make Voiceover improvements. This stands in stark
contrast with Neil’s recent post about Sonos who has been asked for years by
Neil, myself and a few other users to make a few minor improvements to their
app like labeling some buttons and who can’t be bothered despite promises
and the fact that in other ways they seem to be a good company with a
definitely excellent product.

The Netatmo weather station consists of an indoor module and an outdoor
module. The indoor module is what connects to the WiFi and the outdoor
module connects to the indoor module by I think 2.4 Ghz radio frequency
which means it can be placed a considerable distance away. It should be kept
out of the rain and direct sunlight and I was already told that Netatmo is
working on coming up with an anemometer (a sensor that measures windspeed)
and a gauge for measuring rainfall amounts. All Netatmo stations report
their data back to Netatmo as well and it is their goal to create a super
network of everybody’s Netatmo weather station so that anybody can see the
data from stations that maybe near them because especially in very large
cities micro climates often form and an official government station 5 miles
away may not report conditions correctly. Both units are made from aluminum
and are in the shape of a tube approx. 2 inches thick, the indoor module is
maybe 6 inches long, the outdoor module maybe 4 inches. The outdoor unit is
run by 4 Triple A batteries and the indoor unit can be plugged into an
outlet with a micro USB cable and a USB wall adapter (both included). It can
use 4 Double A batteries as backup in the case of a power outage.

I should mention that apart from indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity
the weather station also measures CO2 levels in your house as well as noise
levels both indoors and outdoors and you can set up alerts for various
events like when certain temperatures are reached, the CO2 level is too high
etc.

The Netatmo weather station can be ordered on their website for $179 and
more information is available at www.Netatmo.com.

For other Canadians who maybe interested, shipping to me here in British
Columbia was $19 and I paid $31 to Canada Post when it arrived, approx. $22
was HST and $8 or 9 for the brokerage). This makes it a moderately expensive
gadget, but if you enjoy having access to accurate weather information
inside and directly outside your house this should work well and will
probably work even better in 4 to 6 weeks when the promised Voiceover
improvements hopefully become reality.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi Cieghard.

Your issue on connecting your weather station to your Apple router reminds me
of one of the issues a friend of mine had a while ago:
He couldn't connect any of his computers wirelessly because his router was set

YOu could try to make some research on that to see if it solve any issues.

Hi.
Thanks for your review. I am sorry .to hear that you have not had
success with the unit thus far. I hope you will keep us posted on ans
because I am sure there are quite a few members in the commu

 Hello List,

A couple of weeks ago I briefly mentioned that I found a weather station
which is designed to work with the iPhone. The company is called Netatmo
 and
their website is www.Netatmo.com for those who want to read more about it.

The basic idea is that you get a wireless weather station which consists of
2 sensors, one for indoors and one for outdoors. The outdoor sensor
 connects
to the indoor unit and the indoor unit connects to your WiFi. You then use
the free Netatmo app to access the information provided by the sensors
 which
includes outdoor temperature and humidity, indoor temperature, humidity and
carbon monoxide levels as well as indoor and outdoor noise levels which is
 a
bit unusual for weather stations, but I guess it could be interesting if
 you
live in a big city and are curious as to how much noise there really is.

Currently the station does not measure windspeed and precipitation, but I
was told that they are working on that and I assume this may be added later
in the form of additional sensors you can buy. The 2 sensor units consist
 of
a perfectly round tube which is made from aluminum, both are exactly the
same diameter (about 2 inches), the outdoor unit is maybe 4 inches long and
the indoor unit is maybe 6 inches long. Each unit has a plastic lid on one
end with a large slot you can use ith a coin and this is where you put the

 Wizard or something like that.

I used the Convenient OCR feature in Jaws and was able to read the welcome
screen which basically says Thanks for buying the weather station and there
is a next button which I was able to click. Then the OCR gave me a list of
available networks and I tried to click my WiFi which was there, but I did
not get into the edit field where I could enter my password or maybe I did
and Jaws didn't say it because when I repeated the procedure with sighted
help Jaws said nothing like edit field but my friend told me I could type
 the password.

So I finally typed in my password with sighted help and was looking forward
to getting this connected to see if the app would give me information
Voiceover could read, but the Wizard then told me the station could not be
connected to my network and to manually enter static Ip information. I
 tried
everything I could think of and I'm not exactly a beginner when it comes to
technology and networking, but no luck.

I then took the unit to work and we tried to connect it to my work WiFi
 both
using the PC wizard as well as the app always with the same result; it
 could
not connect. I am using Apple Airport Express WiFi access points and rarely
have a problem with other devices, my Radio Thermostats both at work and at
home connected just fine. At this point I can only conclude that the
particular unit I received has a faulty WiFi radio or that the product
 which
has only been released very recently is the equivalent of the waste a male
member of the bovine species produces. The sensors actually do have the
 feel
and look of a very well-made product and are packed beautifully, but I
 guess
 that doesn't necessarily mean much.

I am quite disappointed of course because I have been searching for a
weather station that talks to my iPhone for at least a year or more and was
