[WISPA] Billing Solution
What do we got out there for billing solutions? My current one is not working out. I've been using Freeside for a number of years now and I liked it but they don't have any support staff left and seem to be falling apart. I've been constantly requesting an SSL renewal for 45 days and they just can't get it done. It's beyond frustrating, time consuming and embarrassing try to explain to hundreds of customers why my payment site is not secure. I can't take it anymore. I need some recommendations on whats out there. I want good support. I need a solution with support. What's everybody using? What do you like and dislike about it? Re: [WISPA] Ubiquiti ERLite-3 3-port Router
I've contacted MT support once. It was a week ago. I had an old 532 running 3.x and it wouldn't upgrade. I went to the website, filled out the form, attached the sup file and sent it. I got a reply five minutes later with a new key. I upgraded. Life is good. :) Brian On 1/9/2013 5:15 PM, Scott Lambert wrote: On Tue, Jan 08, 2013 at 08:04:18PM -0600, Mike Hammett wrote: I've been using both MT and UBNT for many many years and I plan to use them both for many years. MT support in their forum is hit and miss. I get timely responses from supp...@mikrotik.com. I don't understand the people who complain on the forums that MT support is horrible and refuse to e-mail supp...@mikrotik.com. I am not saying that Mike is one of those guys. I don't know if his statement is based on experience with supp...@mikrotik.com or not. The east europe/western asia folks just seem to have a bit of a different take on things than we in North America do. I think that's just due to the culture and language differences. They tend to come off as being a bit brusk to us. I don't trust any newly shipping product in a production environment. They go into designated test environments. The Edge Router may be the best thing since sliced bread. However, the devices I've used the Quagga stack on have let me down more than the MikroTik routing stack. Of course, most of those Quagga devices were StarOS which had its own problems. Thankfully, we have completed our 100% StarOS to 100% UBNT AP/backhaul radios with MikroTik routers transition. When I get an Edge Router, I will play with it on the desk. Then it will be put a nearby but small tower site. If it behaves, I'll put one on a non-leaf node tower. I'm not in a hurry to get my first EdgeRouter. Until then, I really like my 493Gs running 5.21. We have not run any production MikroTik wireless gear. We just haven't. We picked up some Ubiquiti gear first. No other reason. I have 6.0rc6 on the MikroTik in the house. It has wireless. It works for my personal devices. I wouldn't consider using RouterOS 6 on customer use gear, yet. Not even when they are calling it the 6th release candidate. It's not a release candidate if you are still adding new features. If you are still adding new features, it is an alpha release... I have a couple of RB2011UAS units on the bench. They aren't in the field for the same reason I would not rush to put the EdgeRouter in the field. UBNT and MikroTik both have software QA issues. At this price point, we get to be the alpha/beta testers. C'est la vie. ___ Wireless mailing list Wireless@wispa.org http://lists.wispa.org/mailman/listinfo/wireless

Put the word GREEN in that grant app and you might just have a shot! Not too bad of an idea with those solar panels. Brian Christopher Erickson wrote: The right type of batteries could give you 15 to 20 years of service. And adding a pair of solar panels and an MPPT solar charge controller could increase your backup battery run time from a couple of days to a couple of weeks. And no volatile fuel issues to deal with either. And their PMI interval is a godsend too. And cheaper than a genny. Add another panel or two and you might even be able to drop your grid connection. Remember to eliminate as many power conversions as possible from your telecom power design. -Christopher Erickson Network Design Engineer 5432 E. To clarify our intent, in posting. From yr 2000-2008, our model was to 1) Have minimum 12 hour run-time of battery for core cell sites. 2) Have contingency plan for hooking up a mobile gasoline powered generator, in longer lasting Emergencies. (We have a couple hot spare generators) Why are we changing our view point? 1) Many of the batteries have now died, and need replaced. Batteries are still very expensive. Propaine Generators have come way down in price (aka Generac) In most case, the generator will be less expensive than the batteries, based on watt load at the sites. 2) Our network has grown, but our staff size has shrunk. We realize the challenge that more than one site can loose power at once, and harder to get to multiple locations at once with generators. Its hard to know when batteries will hold or not, when towards the end of their life, so its always a rush with the genrators. 9/10 cases by the time we get generators onsite, the power gets restored within minutes. 3) Its easy to throw a generator on a Grant Application :-) We believe permanent onsite generators would likely increase uptime, and not necessarilly be more expensive, for some of our sites. (We'd of course still keep some patteries inline) The question is whether it will be more hassle than we realize to re-fill them and inspect them. Some people told me quarterly inspections are needed, or sometimes they do not start when needed. We are already connected to building generators, where we were allowed to, so we are looking at sites where our only option was to put in our own. I'm still uncertain what objections or preferences property management would have for this type stuff. For example, whether they would be concerned about it blowing up if a gas leak occured. I actually have one building in mind wher egetting a new electrical connector from the roof to the ground would be really a big pain. Would require Xray and drilling every floor of 20. There I'd like to put a roof mounted propaine generator. I was thinking maybe the best option is to just have a small external tank, and swap the tank after use? I would think where there is pre-existing riser space, I'd want to mount on ground level, and run thick gauge AC wire up. Mostly I was wondering if management companies look for specific features for the device, or if Generac would offer all standard features to meet the requirements of code and property managers. For our smaller watt sites, we'd of course stick with batteries. There are strict requirements such as sub 10 second startup times, routine testing, and fuel availability requirements. If you talk to the building engineer, you might be able to convince them to allow you a small amount of power from an emergency circuit. The buildings I am in do this for most of their tenants for phone systems, etc. Failing that, have an electrician run conduit to the parking lot and place a power inlet down there. Don't be afraid to get creative with your backup connection. Mine is a $60 a month 6 meg down and 768k up DSL line. Sure we average 12 meg on the bandwidth graph, but it's better than being off. When I have to use the backup I limit all connections to 56k up and 100k down. Brian Tom DeReggi wrote: Actually, I disagree with your example. You let your customer down, not Qwest. Did you let him know that you are trying to contact Quest yourself to get more information on an ETA, and influence a work around? Did he feel you were in control of the situation? Or did you leave him to fend for himself, even though you were the expert on the technology? Sending the message, "oh well, its down, not my problem, let all my own customers suffer, so what" is not taking care of your clients. If you had communicated with your client making him feel like you were working towards defending his interests, he never would have took action into his own hands and called Qwest directly to investigate further, and get false answers. So yes, Customers can be irrational, often unfair and unforgiving, but if you want to keep your clients its up to you to deal with it and take care of them. Who's faught it is, is irrelevent. Customer Service is about taking care of the customer. I just lost a customer 2 weeks ago. Power went out AGAIN! It keeps blowing breakers on electrical panels not under my controll or access. I can put UPSes there all day, but that does no good if breakers turn off upstream of my electrical Demarc. But DSL, CABLE, and Cellular EVDO didn't go out every time the property had power failures. It was my faught that I designed a business install to be behind an electric breaker that was outside my control to manage. If I did my job and took care of the client, I would have called the power company or property management and redesign an alternate solution, after the first couple of times the power went out. But I didn't. Yes, I lost the client, and yes, it was my fault. Blaiming it on the Power Company didn't work for long. Just keeping it real. Re: [WISPA] Ethernet Cabling
The only problems I have had in 5 years is cable wearing through because it was not tied on properly and power supplies and ends going bad because water dripped into then. I've never seen water hurt a cable, even a cut cable. It only hurts the ends. I have had cables get water in them so I make a cut at the bottom of the drip loop and then the water does not damage any more ends and power supplies, it simply drains out. Brian George Rogato wrote: Thats a good comparison Tom. Couple things I should note, which I thought about after I posted. I live in the Pac North West, not the South West, Arizona Nevada or Texas. Like on the underside of eves and the backside of the fascia board, behind down spouts and gutters. those places do not generally get much sunlight. And it's rare that I do an exposed roof run. I really can only comment on my experience. I'm sure things are different in other parts of the country. The goal here is enabling residential users to find the ISP's AP on their own. So my questions are 1. If a Horizontally polarized antenna is used at the AP, Is it likely the consumer will equally be able to find your AP, compared to if it had been verical pol'd? The idea being, horizontal pol's noise floor is much lower in the particular area, and more likely ISP will avoid the noise from consumer APs that ship with vert pol antennas, where end users by default will stick the antennas straight up in Verticle pol position. 2. By the time the ISP's horizontal signal gets to the end user, is it received in multiple polarities, based on all the reflections in end users home and stuff? 3. Are laptop wifi cards typically "no polarity", and pick up Horizontal as good as verticle signals? 4. Laptops would appear to have Horizontal pol antennas in some cases, expecially if a PCMCIA card. Is this true? Or are most laptops starting to embed verticle pol antennas on the sides of screens? 5. Are End Users getting savy enough to move their laptop all around, when they first take it out of the box, to try and find Horizontal pol APs of ISPs Hotspots? In summary If doing Hotspot WAN deployment, and Verticle noise is significantly higher, will an ISP be doing a smart thing putting their sector on Horiz pol to avoid noise, or shooting themself in the foot because they'll be sending a signal cross pol to the average end user's verticle pol's Wifi card, taking a 20db hit off the bat? Sure Horizontal will be better, if the the consumer gets a professional install, or learns to put an external horizontal pol antenna on their laptop or PC. But most people may not know to do that, by default, for hotspot self subscription. (PS. recognize could use dual pol or 45deg off pol, but purposely avoiding that, to try not to interfere with others, to enable more people to play in the same spectrum) What have other's found? Re: [WISPA] How much to charge for a truck roll
I never used to charge for a lot of that stuff but then one day I said screw it. $75 for a service call. I had some complaints, started lowering the price for 5 minute repairs and decided on another change. I now do $50 service calls. I decided instead of getting complaints about $75 or lowering the price all the time because it's a quick fix that I'd be better off and have an easier time charging $50 all the time than $75 half the time. It has worked out nicely. No complaints and I don't feel like I'm screwing people (like $75 for a 5 minute job). Couple things to remember is my coverage area is pretty small. My office is in the middle so the drive time to any edge is not much more than 15 minutes. We're also mostly residental, so we don't need instant response. I can schedule a couple things in one area to make it efficient. Brian Kurt Fankhauser wrote: Oh my! We could never get away with charging anywhere near that! Hi All, I just got a notice that Quickbooks is going to REQUIRE an upgrade in order to continue to keep sending out bills via email. And we have all of 1 month or so to get it done I HATE Intuit and would like to replace them. Here's the work flow in our office. New customer calls in. Fill out signup sheet with all needed customer data. Assign static ip to customer. Enter customer billing info into Quickbooks. Enter all customer data into Access. Enter customer username and pass into RADIUS. Enter customer email account(s) data into email server. Enter customer data into Postini (if they purchase the filtering). Type customer signup sheet info into word doc and store in customer folder. Generate installation work order. Fill out check list showing what steps have been completed. This has worked nicely in the past and "only" takes about 30 minutes to accomplish. But now we're growing too fast and have gotten too big to maintain this. Between tech support calls etc. the office manager is having to bring in extra help. It's only a day per week and it's good for there to be two people there at least part of the time. No one should work alone all of the time. Plus, if she wants to take some time off she will have someone trained in the basics so we'll likely need to keep some extra help around no matter what. This mechanism also gives us a lot of double checks, redundant data points etc. With Access and Quickbooks we can run a very nice mix of reports etc. We do NOT have a customer trouble ticket mechanism other than the file on them. We don't track customers on a per call basis. That's not too bad because we're still small enough that we can normally remember problem customers. This would probably be a good time to change everything though. In my perfect world, I'd have a billing system (that handles all of the taxes for different communities etc.), trouble ticketing, auto server configuration AND deconfig. I'd want good reporting capabilities. I've looked at some of the commercial systems out there, but at $1 or more per month per sub for a full blown system I'd rather keep putting that money into the local labor pool. Freeside looks pretty good but I don't do programming or server admin work in-house. I don't mind hiring someone to set it all up etc. and to take care of the server. But it has to be an affordable solution too. What are people using? Do you like it? If you had it to do all over again, what would you do? Vendors please

I went to the FCC website and typed swx-ps2 into the search box and got no results. Must be it's not that easy. Can I get a little more direction on how to find something there? Explain it in simple terms (pretend you are describing it to someone like Marlon) *ducking*. Brian e...@wisp-router.com wrote: That is just pointers to regulation text. You need to look in the mfg's datasheet for antenna patterns. If that is not available from the manufacturer sometime you can find that in the FCC approval application filing documents available on the FCC id search database. Ubiquiti's FCC id is swx. Complete FCC id for say their XR2 card is SWX-XR2. The Powerstation2 is SWX-PS2 (same for NS2 and Loco2 actually since its a lower gain antenna there for approved for use by manufacturer choice as discussed on the list recently). /Eje Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile -Original Message- From: Brian Rohrbacher br...@reliableinter.net Date: Sun, 08 Mar 2009 13:55:45 To: WISPA General Listwireless@wispa.org Subject: Re: [WISPA] radio mobile WISPA Wants You! We try to hide all cable as much as possible, we ask for a vacuum to clean up any drillings, we do NOT leave the little ends from the cat5 crimps laying around - not even outside. Hell, until recently we always ran indoor WHITE cat 5 cable. People REALLY liked that, I have just gotten tired of cables with water in them. [WISPA] Mapping Effort. If you can't donate $$, donate time
I just spent three hrs mapping all of Michigan. I went to wispdirectory.com and visited the website of all 37 Michigan wisps. At each website I looked for a list of cities covered or a coverage map. I then put that info in google earth. If they had a coverage map with blobs, I would use lakes, rivers, and roads to draw the blob in google earth the best I could. If they had cities, I typed the city in google earth, and it flies to it. After it is done flying, I clicked the push pin button and then ok. It's quick and easy. I sent the earth file to Brian and he ran it through his process which draws the circle around every city. The info I just submitted accounted for 29,859 square miles. I urge others to step up and take a couple hrs to map their state. I plan on knocking off a few more when I can. Please post if you have done or are going to do one. Brian Rohrbacher WISPA Wants You! Couple yrs ago I bought a 1988 Jeep Comanche for $100 bucks, and then traded a customer a couple hrs labor for a utility topper with ladder racks. Drove it for about a yr and only had to work on it for one thing (fuel pump went out 2 times because of grounding issue). Worked great until the employee blew a stop sign and t boned an suv. It went end for end and rolled. Everyone recovered. Right now I have a 1996 2wd Chevy work truck V6. Steel rims, bumper, no air, vinyl floor, ect. Paid $3000 for the truck (100k miles) and $400 for the utility topper (guy said he bought the topper for $2400 2 yrs ago) We got strap on chains for the Michigan weather and can get out of anything you should have been in in the first place. In 2 yrs I have changed the oil, done a tune up, replaced alternator ($100), and blower fan ($75). Lately I have seen 2005 plain jane work trucks for 5k. 90-100k miles. There is a large amount of funding that will be made available for Broadband Providers to extend their networks. Re: [WISPA] 1and1.com
Just tried and all it did was yank all the inbox messages. Now I am sending those back to the imap account. It's didn't even try to get the folders. I will switch as soon as I wait 5 days to see if they have a backup. Brian Dennis Burgess - Linktechs.net wrote: I have a number of customers that switched from them because of this reason. What happens when you fall? Brian John Valenti wrote: Brian, Why would you want to add a safety cable to the cage? I'm on several legs with the cages and they seem great. I usually just lean back to take a break while climbing. It seems like an unnecessary bother, and something else to get in the way while climbing the ladder. Just curious what your thinking is, maybe I'm missing something. -John On Jan 6, 2009, at 9:20 PM, Brian Rohrbacher wrote: I have seriously thought about putting a cable going up the center of the ladders on all the elevator legs we're on. There is already one on the leg that has no cage. Then we could clip on a go, with either a belt or a light harness (unlike my big sit down elk river harness that is a little heavy). Anyone run these cable before? What is needed? WISPA Wants You!
