I've never used a CMS before, so I'm wondering if anybody could relieve
my fears (or justify them). Can I create a web site for this client,
and then integrate Mambo into it, or do I have to think further ahead
and set things up in Mambo, then build a template for it? I'm sorry if
those are silly questions, but...well...like I said, I've never used a

Getting more to the point (and on-topic), does Mambo support web
standards? I'm obviously going to use CSS and XHTML on this, so I need
to be sure that I'm not getting into something that goes against my
design ethics.

Thanks for your help.

[WSG] excerpt:SitePoint Design View #9 - Small Screen Development

2005-05-13 Thread Neerav
Testing for Smartphones PDAs
So, you were won over to the 'standards compliancy' argument. You now build
your pages to HTML standards and sleep soundly in the knowledge that your work
is accessible and device-independent.
Ok, the reality isn't quite that easy, but it's a good place to start.
The most depressing part is that, with the proliferation of phone/PDA-based
browsing, there are now dozens of mobile browsers out there with viable
markets. The list of key players include AvantGo, Blazer, DoCoMo, EudoraWeb,
ftxBrowser, PalmSource, Nokia Mobile Browser, NetFront, OpenWave, Opera for
Mobile, Plucker and Xiino -- just to name a few.
The second depressing thing is they are actually getting harder to design for
as they become more 'advanced'. In the past you could rely on them to simply
ignore JavaScript and CSS. Not any more. Most now know just enough to get you
into trouble.
Fortunately, at this point in time, most of us aren't required to focus on
delivering content to mobile devices. However, with Tim Berners-Lee this week
announcing the W3C's 'Mobile Web Initiative', I thought now might be a good
time for you to see how your current code fairs.
So, assuming you don't own 50 phones, how can you find out? Here are a few ideas, listed from easiest to hardest in terms of setup and use.
to get the full article you'll have to subscribe to Sitepoints Design
View email newsletter http://www.sitepoint.com/newsletter/archives.php
But a quick summary is:
1. Opera's Small Screen Rendering Mode - www.opera.com
2. WinWap's free Smartphone Browser Emulator

3. Openwave's Phone Simulator 7.0 -

[WSG] Minimum browsers/OS tested for?

2005-05-11 Thread Neerav
Hi
I havent asked this for a while so it would be interesting to know what
the current trend in Browser/Operating system support is for the
freelancers/corporates on this list to see if there has been any change
in the last 6-12 months

Theoretical example 1: we used to design for 5.x browsers but recently
stopped doing so without charging clients an extra XX%

Theoretical example 2: we didn't test functionality on Mozilla before,
but the increasing usage of Mozilla in site statistics convinced
management to allow time for Mozilla testing

etc etc

Instead find other sites that achieve the same effect, compare and

[WSG] [Possibly OT] Conundrum between attribution VS disclosure for results of work

2005-05-02 Thread Neerav
Hi
I am in a conundrum at the moment and dont know which right is legally
stronger out of attribution VS disclosure

attribution = the right to be identified as the creator of material (ie:
my right)

disclosure = the right to determine if and when material is made public
(right of the companies I've subcontracted for)

Background: I do a lot of sub-contractual work, mainly using web
standards eg: converting invalid code to standards compliant code,
advising developers how to improve their practices, working from a
photoshop template to create an XHTML/CSS template etc

My problem is when I am being interviewed for a new contract postion,
interviewers ask for concrete examples this very second of which
websites I've worked on recently through my sub-contracting work.

They say eg: Anyone can say they worked for ExampleCorp
GenericITagency, we want specific URL's of your work to see what you can do

So far I've stonewalled and said they're free to call ExampleCorp
GenericITagency to confirm I've done work for them, but Im not sure im
legally allowed to reveal specific URL's. They respond saying other
interviewees are willing to reveal details so I should too, and I end up
disadvantaged :-(

Ironically I wouldnt be surprised if these same companies looking for
contractors make their staff sign NDA's prohibiting them from mentioning
what they have done to a new employer!

Since this is Possibly OT, I'd appreciate any responses (with emphasis
on Australian experience) to be sent directly to my email address and
therefore not offend the moderators

thanks

Sorry, should have mentioned that. Yes, the page is UTF-8 (by both

Yep, the image does indicate the version. Good idea on the HREFLANG.
Haven't used that previously, I'll have to investigate

Now, if your design allows for a little padding of the a you'd have
the English title shortly displayed before the mouse hovers on the
image, so those without a proper font can roll back their mouse to the
link when their browser fails to display the alt text.
Unfortunately, these links are in a small sidebar. Not a lot of room for
spare padding - okay, none. I had to shrink the images a tad to get them
in there in the first place. Cool idea though, I might have to see if I
can work it in somehow if I can't get a better solution

Thanks for your suggestions, guys. Anyone else want to share?

I can verify that two Windows 2000 computers are involved, with exactly

Any ideas? Could it be CRT versus LCD monitors? The fact that one person

[WSG] Taming Your Multiple IE Standalones

2005-04-10 Thread Neerav
Multiple versions of Explorer for Windows on a single computer have
revolutionized CSS bug testing for websites, but sadly the different IE
browser windows appear identical to the eye, potentially leading to
confusion and testing mistakes.

Also, Microsofts proprietary Conditional Comments dont operate
properly on these standalones, making advanced usage of CCs a guessing
game.

These problems have now been resolved in a positioniseverything article

Its probably a symptom of the Sample Site and Sample Article being

Re: [WSG] Really strange results

2005-04-05 Thread Neerav
John
People use that method to try and stop people copying source code.
Unfortunately there really is no reliable way of doing so because:

1. the page is usually cached by the browser and you can get the source
code from there

2. browsers can be set to disable javascript to get around these kinds
of right-click disabling scripts

Basically, since HTML is interpreted by user agents (browsers etc) and
not compiled, its next to impossible to stop people copying content/code

I use the following technique, which works in every e-mail client that I
have tried. Have I tested every single one of them? No, of course not. But
Hotmail and Gmail I have tried and this technique works well for those two
as well as most e-mail clients.
The trick is to use NO part of the webpage above and including the BODY tag.
Hotmail and other web-based readers strip everything above the BODY tag, so
you lose all of that.
Take a look at my below example. (It's a bit wide in a browser, but in an
e-mail client window it's fine. Just narrow your browser window a bit.) Look
at the source to see the Trick:
http://www.nlgjany.org/e_mail_announce/
The trick is to put the whole page in 2 Wrapper elements, and then put the
CSS styles just inside the first Wrapper. No HTML tag. No BODY tag.
NOTE 1: Hotmail and Gmail both don't display perfectly; Hotmail doesn't get
floats correct sometimes, and Gmail doesn't display images by default - you
have to turn that on in each mail.
NOTE 2: That said, this mail technique will degrade nicely (as all XHTML/CSS
should) in mail clients that are set to Not Display Complex HTML, or Not
Display Images, or Not Allow Internet Access When Displaying Complex HTML.
At worst, the reader should display simple HTML, showing Headers, Paragraphs
and Lists, etc.

Hope this helps!

-moz-border-radius,
-moz-border-radius-topleft, -moz-border-radius-topright,
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft, -moz-border-radius-bottomright
Support: Netscape 7+, Mozilla 0.95+
Inherited: No
Allowed Values:
- Inherit: Use the value of this property from the parent element.
- [Length]: Specifies a length and unit of the border/corner radius.
- [Percentage]: Specifies a percentage. Not sure of what the percentage
relates to.

Purpose:
This property controls the curve radius of borders at the corners,
allowing corners to be rounded (otherwise, borders are usually squared
off.) The '-moz-border-radius' property is a shorthand method for
controlling this effect for each corner. If one value is specified, it
applies to all corners. If only two values exist, the first applies to
the top-left and bottom-right, while the second value applies to the
top-right and bottom-left. If all four values are specified, they
control, in order: [top-left] [top-right] [bottom-right] [bottom-left]

[WSG] Accessible HTML Tables article

2005-03-23 Thread Neerav
I've just written an article about Accessible HTML Tables and would
appreciate any comments/suggestions for changes:

excerpt from http://www.bhatt.id.au/blog/2005/03/24/accessible-html-tables/
table elements are often maligned by the web standards savvy developer
who equates them to the bad old days of table based layout.

This has the unintended consequence that such a developer won't know how
to best use a table for its proper purpose of displaying data. This
article aims to fix this problem by going through the elements and
attributes which can help make a data table more accessible, render
faster, and make it easier to interpret.

Hi
could a few people have a quick look at my newly constructed New Zealand

would scare off viewers/potential customers?

http://www.bhatt.id.au/photos/NewZealand/
I've already checked it with the W3C validators, Firefox 1.0, IE6 SP1,

FYI It's a heavily hacked version of http://singapore.sourceforge.net/

[WSG] ECMAScript collapsible Menu System

2005-01-23 Thread Neerav
There has been lots written about separating content from presentation,
and most developers see the benefit of this approach (cleaner, leaner
markup; faster download speeds; easier maintainability, etc). There is
also a fair amount written about separating behaviour from both content
and presentation, but it tends to be practiced less than separation of
content from presentation. HTML (or even XHTML) should be used for content
, CSS for presentation, and ECMAScript for behaviour.

All the time JavaScript was a Netscape proprietary technology, its use
could not be endorsed by the W3C. In the middle of 1998, the European
Computer Manufacturers Association (ECMA) created a public domain
specification based on JavaScript, but using a standardised Document
Object Model. The third edition of the ECMAScript Language Specification
was published in December 1999; Standard ECMA-262.

To illustrate using a completely separate behavioural layer, I'll
demonstrate a collapsible menu system. All of the examples are HTML,
but work equally well as XHTML, even when served with the correct MIME type.

I am debating with their designers about 2 things:
1. They want to use a full page graphic Splash Screen, which displays
the brand in all its glory before the user can enter the site.
2. They want to use images in the Navigation bar to give tight control
over the fonts, instead of text.
I do not want to use a splash screen, because it will just get in the
way, and could turn viewers away. I do not want to use images in the
navigation, not only for usability / accessibility / SEO reasons, but
because the site is dynamic and I want the Nav to be dynamically
driven.
I just wondered if any of you know of any websites which show solid
convincing arguments against these things, so that I can prove my
point. At this stage the accessibility argument isn't cutting it
(enough)!...
I can show them some stuff from Jacob Nielsen, but I found that they
essentially scoff at his comments claiming that he is too 'old

[WSG] -moz-border-radius

2004-11-14 Thread Neerav
Lindsay
I note that you're using the proprietary -moz-border-radius to achieve a
rounded look just like I decided to a month ago at www.bhatt.id.au after
evaluating the various rounded corner methods and finding them to be a
pain to implement

I contend that while it does make the stylesheet invalid, it shouldnt
cause parsing errors because its the last few lines of my CSS file, its
use is harmless and is OK for personal sites.

more details
www.blooberry.com/indexdot/css/properties/extensions/nsextensions.htm
http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/column70/

-moz-border-radius,
-moz-border-radius-topleft, -moz-border-radius-topright,
-moz-border-radius-bottomleft, -moz-border-radius-bottomright
Support: Netscape 7+, Mozilla 0.95+
Inherited: No
Allowed Values:
- Inherit: Use the value of this property from the parent element.
- [Length]: Specifies a length and unit of the border/corner radius.
- [Percentage]: Specifies a percentage. Not sure of what the percentage
relates to.

Purpose:
This property controls the curve radius of borders at the corners,
allowing corners to be rounded (otherwise, borders are usually squared
off.) The '-moz-border-radius' property is a shorthand method for
controlling this effect for each corner. If one value is specified, it
applies to all corners. If only two values exist, the first applies to
the top-left and bottom-right, while the second value applies to the
top-right and bottom-left. If all four values are specified, they
control, in order: [top-left] [top-right] [bottom-right] [bottom-left]

Re: [WSG] Site Check please

sure but the site is displaying the time in major cities round the
world, not local time for the user

eg: on my contact form http://www.bhatt.id.au/contactus.php the PHP code

This is because I am in NSW (with daylight savings Nov-Mar), and my
server is in Queensland (with no daylight savings Nov-Mar), and so I
have to add a 1 hour offet to the server time between Nov-Mar to ensure
it displays the correct time in Sydney

PHP always uses server time AFAIK and there's no way to adjust for time
zones since PHP cannot determine what time zone a client is in, at least in
the research I did a couple of years ago.
Javascript can use the client computer's clock time, but PHP cannot as it's
a server-side language.

What's the recommended practice with indentation?
You can use CSS to indent text with padding and whatever else, but
that's a pain if you have a sitewide CSS file, and the text to be
indented doesn't sit in any defining container
---
Example 1:
Just the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.
may be marked up as a single paragraph (as it corresponds to a single
stanza of a poem -- in this case, the first stanza of Louis Carroll's
The Hunting of the Snark, just for a random example.) as follows:
pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br /
As he landed his crew with care;br /
Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr /
By a finger entwined in his hair./p
---
As line break tags br / are self-closing elements, I don't *think*
it is possible to style with them (e.g. to indent the relevant lines) --
and, even if it were, it would be an ugly solution (assuming I'm even
thinking along the right lines, and that it would work at all):
---
Example 2:
pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br class=indent /
As he landed his crew with care;br /
Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr class=indent /
By a finger entwined in his hair./p
---
Assuming the style would apply to the following, and not preceding,
line. This example is untested, and would most likely not work at all.
I'm just thinking out loud.

One potential solution (albeit a hideous and bloated one) is simply to
use repeated non-breaking space characters:
---
Example 3:
pJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,br /
nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; As he landed his crew with care;br /
Supporting each man on the top of the tidebr /
nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;By a finger entwined in his hair./p
---
but that, of course, probably isn't the most desirable solution.
In terms of light markup (but of dubious semantic appropriateness), I've
seen definition lists employed to this end quite effectively:
---
Example 4:
dl
ddJust the place for a Snark! the Bellman cried,
dl
ddAs he landed his crew with care;/dd
/dl
/dd
ddSupporting each man on the top of the tide
dl
ddBy a finger entwined in his hair./dd

This renders without any problems in visual user agents without styling
required, and is apparently valid XHTML -- but it seems dubious to me.
It appears structurally better, at least to me (my eyes follow the
markup flow more easily than the other examples above), but that doesn't
deal with the issue of semantics.

Is it okay to have untitled definitions? Is it okay to use definition
lists like this at all? Or, better still, does someone have another
solution which I've missed completely?
Thanks in advance,

To fix the problem, change your option as follows:

The guidelines say all form elements need to have default text inside

I completely agree that automated accessibility tests are not efficient
enough to rate a website accessible. However, there are reasons why these
tests ask for default place-holders, which I do not want to plainly ignore,
just because they have been requested by Bobby.

2. what do you mean by password place-holder ?

If I put a default place-holder into a form field with the type=password,
it obviously appears as ***. That's the bit I would like to avoid,
yet for accessibility reasons it may be required to provide it.
There's a discussion going on whether default place-holders are really
necessary or not. Appearantly there are some browsers or assistive
technologies that do not find form elements if they don't have a default
text in them.

[WSG] heading background continues across container width

2004-10-02 Thread Neerav
Hi
Im experimenting with some techniques from dan cederholms book Web
Standards Solutions and found that setting a background image like so

h1 , h2 , h3 , h4 , h5
{
  text-align : left;
  padding-bottom: 14px;
  background: url(/img/under_heading.gif) repeat-x bottom;
}
caused the background image to continue across the whole container div
width, my guess is that this occurs because Hx tags are BLOCK elements,
so I added :

  display: inline;
Which seemed to fix the problem, and made the background display only
below the text in Hx tags,

Are there any caveats to bear in mind when forcing Hx tags to be inline ?

2004-10-02 Thread Neerav
thanks James you have confirmed my suspicion that by default h
elements are 100% wide

everyone else, thanks for the suggestions. I only had it set on inline
for a few minutes anyway as i knew it was not the best method, and I
know that As soon as you convert something to inline you allow other
inline elements to run up beside it

I think I like the effect of the image across the page anyway, so in the
end no changes are needed :-)

repeat-x makes the background image repeat across the whole width

no-repeat would ensure only one copy of the image appears. E.g. see

PS: inline worked because it made the heading shrink-wrap but you
were probably lucky that it remained on a line of its own. I guess it
was surrounded by other block elements.

Re: [WSG] Letterhead/footer using print style?

One way would be to set the 'hidden' letterhead and footer to
display:none;
in the screen media css, and to remove display:none; from the print
style sheet so they appear when printed.

note this means they will be visible in source code and to search engine

found a few useful tips while reading it on the train home.

* Dave Shea (http://www.mezzoblue.com) - of CSS Zen Garden fame.
* Doug Bowman (http://www.stopdesign.com) - who shopcased a lot of neat
yet simple CSS tips

Re: [WSG] doctypes, quirks/standards mode and positioning

2004-09-30 Thread Neerav
The rule of thunb is that if you're going to use XHTML, than you have to
get it 100% correct because XHTML is much more strict and unforgiving of
little errors than html 4

so go for html 4 transitional validation if the clients tables will

Hi all,
I've been trying to get my head around the use of doctypes and their
eventual influence on layouts via whether they force the browser into
standards mode or not.
What i've come to so far is if you use tables mixed with css for
positioning you're better off staying with an HTML 4 doctype (and in
quirks mode) rather than using an XHTML doctype and forcing the
browser into standards mode. The reason i'm asking is i'm working
contractually with a company who's using XHTML doctypes on their
templates and often improperly formed tables, (almost as far from
XHTML as you can get sometimes and still get something to appear on
the page) for their layouts and they're asking me for help to fix it.
I've read somewhere that one should only use an XHTML doctype if
you're using XML on the page or using css positioning exclusively.
Anyone have a take on this or a good reference to consult?
Note: i'm trying to be practical here - it's an urgent job, it's clear
the company doesn't have anyone who knows anything about css
positioning on board, and i'm a student of css positioning, not an
expert. So at this point i tend to use tables to position the chunks
and css to position the detail within the chunks.
thanks,
Nando :)

This is fairly typical of small-screen devices. Since most web developers don't use CSS

Hi Jonothan,
Yeah, I'd considered that for the future however right now as far as I
know Word 2004 on the Mac does not have the ability to save as XML.
Since one of the users is a Mac user (so am i in fact) that solution
will have to wait.

Thanks,
Nick
My recommendation would be to create an XML schema and then use a
product like infopath to export the xml (xhtml) to your CMS.

Hi all
Can anyone recommend a browser based editor (preferably written in PHP)
that will allow clients to update code themselves, but that outputs
standards compliant XHTML?

I am not interested in a full CMS, this is just for updating page
snippets etc.

I have come across WYSIWYG Pro which looks good.
Thanks

Thanks Neerav.
I think xstandard delivers XHTML 1.1 or strict. I'm using XHTML 1.0
transitional for most of my work. Any other ideas?

Re: [WSG] Unaccessible - NY Attorney General busts two big name sites

2004-08-20 Thread Neerav
The more salient question would be whether corporates can be forced to
do so in australia, as SOCOG was a government corporation. AFAIK whether
australian corporates can be forced to comply to W3C/accessibility
guidelines is untested in the courts.

Have you forgotten Sydney Olympics web site, it was 4 years ago the Human Rights
Commission awarded A$20,000 compensation in the Maguire vs. SOCOG case.
You can find it all here: http://www.contenu.nu/socog.html
