Re: [AFMUG] Mikrotik vulnerabilities

2018-03-26 Thread Adam Moffett

What I found interesting is the SMB exploit is fixed in 6.41.3.

The only mention of SMB in the Changelog is this:
"*) smb - improved NetBIOS name handling and stability; "

So fixing a buffer overflow which resulted in arbitrary code execution =
"improved [...] stability" ?

Changelog is written by marketing dept maybe?

Same as the external-drive-file-sharing feature in home routers... it
makes a cheap NAS. The only way you'd have that exposed to the outside
world is through huge inexperience or foolishness, but I'm sure that
you've seen by now that those users exist.

That info is from January. If you have a MIPS BE or x86 mikrotik
on ROS 6.38.4 or lower and have the http service exposed to the
world then you could be hit by this. The remotely executable code
could be anything, even a remote shell which the attacker can use

show up as "unclassified" in Tool -> Profile. I plead the 5th on

Also on March 12 they announced a remote exploit in the SMB
service. I don't imagine most of us use the SMB service though.

Re: [AFMUG] Cambium LTE

Regardless if they call it LTE+ or 5g. Stuff gets faster, latency goes down and
more spectrum is used for increased capacity. And of course a marketing
buzzword is needed. In some places LTE is realy fast now already. This carrier
stuff is using spectrum very efficient.

There are some docs, they're hard to find. They're also not very pretty

There may be something unusual with timing pulses on the power that
is causing the surge suppressor to fire.
Forrest would know much more than I about that.

I honestly don’t know if anyone has tried my product with a Medusa
 before.
I have a 100% gas tube version that may solve the problem.

I did pull it from the rack and let it float, no change, however, I
didn't reboot it while the card was floating.

I cant understand why Cambium opens up another additional platform.
Why not develop 450 line further implementing some physical layer
goodies of LTE. I've seen this step with Wimax/PMP320 and all know
where this ended up.

Once they implemented LTE stuff it is outdated as 5G is moving in.

 Yo smart folks,

I put a gige APC HV rack mount surge suppressor inline with a
Cambium Medusa today. It booted up, got in about 20 pings and then the
Packetflux SyncInjector shutdown. Tried putting the Ethernet cable
 directly
in the SyncInjector and it worked, just like on the bench when I tested
Sync (via Aux Jr) and Power- Data. I never tested a surge suppressor.

It's real time enough; the result cached period for the website is like

Open up the injector. The jumper positions are printed on the board. Top
left I believe.

The default is -4/5 +7/8 and PowerA input on all four ports. So if you
just plugged it in without any jumper changes, then you're pretty much
trying to put ~1.5A on a single pair (one pair positive, the other
return). That's probably ungood.

Jumper the other two pairs so you get -4/5 +7/8 -1/2 +3/6. Try the SS
again and see if the port trips.

Yo smart folks,
I put a gige APC HV rack mount surge
suppressor inline with a Cambium Medusa today.
It booted up, got in about 20 pings and then
the Packetflux SyncInjector shutdown. Tried
putting the Ethernet cable directly in the
SyncInjector and it worked, just like on the
bench when I tested Sync (via Aux Jr) and
Power- Data. I never tested a surge
suppressor. Which ones work with the thing?
Chuck, What say you?

Well, since I don't have any spares of the *PowerInjector Plus Sync -
Gigabit Version,* I bought a couple as I have plans for other locations for
Medusas. In the meantime, please tell me how to make sure that the jumpers
are set correctly.

GPS is not physically connected to input of SyncInjector now daisy chained
from the other Syncinjectors, the AP is getting timing from Syncbox jr via
UGPS power setting on radio . Cat6 is 115' long.
I didn't even know that jumpering was an option. I guess I have to RTFM for
the jumper location on the syncinjector? Can you please point me to the

There may be something unusual with timing pulses on the power that is
causing the surge suppressor to fire.
Forrest would know much more than I about that.

I honestly don’t know if anyone has tried my product with a Medusa

I have a 100% gas tube version that may solve the problem.

I've started watching The Looming Tower, very good so far. Excited about
the new season of Silicon Valley, although I liked Erlich, going to miss
that character. Too many of these shows to watch and not enough time.
Still need to get caught up on Mr Robot, The Expanse, and new seasons
coming out of Handmaid's Tale, Westworld, and I believe Man in the High

Re: [AFMUG] florida bridge - check your harness

2018-03-26 Thread castarritt .
AvE did a youtube video with his community's theory/analysis. The original
plans for installation showed the temporary supports under the bridge in
different locations vs where they were when it failed. Also, you can see
one of the prestressing tendons sticking out of the collapsed structure
with the tensioning cylinder still attached. AvE thinks someone got the
math wrong when they changed the location of the supports during
installation. When they put too much stress on that tendon, it stretched.
Then, when sensors showed lower tension on that tendon, they tried to pull
it tight again, causing it to snap.

Yes, the single blink seems like an overcurrent on port one. The

 Sorry you are having difficulty.

I would pull it from the rack and see if the interruption of the ground
 fixes the problem.

The issue is either noise to/from the ground.
 or
Transverse impulses getting clamped. Could be something about the new
timing stuff that I don’t understand.
Forrest is probably better versed in thinking about this than I am.

Perhaps the server got launched by Elon Musk and the time delay is just

 Yo smart folks,

I put a gige APC HV rack mount surge suppressor inline with a Cambium
Medusa today. It booted up, got in about 20 pings and then the Packetflux
SyncInjector shutdown. Tried putting the Ethernet cable directly in the
SyncInjector and it worked, just like on the bench when I tested Sync (via
Aux Jr) and Power- Data. I never tested a surge suppressor. Which ones work
 with the thing?
 Chuck, What say you?

I would like to share some solid stats with the
group. Please see those below. The comment about a
decline is hard to address without looking at
stats. Kind of like the user that calls you and
vaguely says “My internet seems slow” when you have
stats that show they are getting more than they are
paying for. We have hired a number of new people
recently because we have grown and have added a new
office but as Justin said this is a slow time of the
year so we also took advantage of this time to get
rid of some of our weaker performers. Here are the
company wide stats for the past week with some
comments about them, I would stack these up against
any call center in the world. Sorry if I come on
strong, but as you all know this is my baby and I
care a lot about it just like you do about your
networks. I know we are not perfect, out of 6000
calls I am sure we made a mistake or two and I am
happy to address any individual issue directly, but
I am pretty proud of what we do.

Re: [AFMUG] Serverplus

2018-03-26 Thread Adam Moffett
I think there are maybe two different points being argued here, and
they're both right.

It's unquestionably cheaper to outsource one tech support person versus
hiring one tech support person.

In a tiny outfit it's also true that you don't hire a person for a
single role. There are a million functions to perform in a company, and
if you hire someone for one function you are still left with 999,999
things to do, and probably too much labor devoted to the one function.

You're missing my point.

Support calls are maybe 2-4 a week.

But there are minimums with SP. Plus there are the calls that are
mis-directed that I would end up paying for, or "Is Matt there?".

BUT... by bringing my sales in-house ($300-$400/month) plus the support
(around the same amount) I'm now part way to just hiring someone -- who
I can now use for other things.

drop all traffic from the suspended list as well, but redirecting to a
portal is preferable in my view.

Re: [AFMUG] SSH or Telnet script to check when a radio/sm is up?

2018-03-26 Thread Cameron Crum
Here is a MT script to set up the web proxy redirect. Obviously you will
need to change the urls in the last section under /ip proxy address. This
script takes anything in the 'suspended' address list and redirects port 80
traffic to whatever you put in place of myportal.com. You also need to
match the ip range at the bottom to whatever ip range you are handing out
to your customers. You can add as many of that last rule as you need to
cover all your ranges. As for the ssh script, it should be easy enough to
write a simple script to ssh in and launch one of these:

 /ip firewall address-list add address=x.x.x.x list=suspended

and to remove

/ip firewall address-list remove [find address=x.x.x.x]

The web proxy set up script is this (only run this one time, then move all
the rules to the top of their respective firewall sections):

add action=accept chain=input comment=\
"Allow Proxy - redirect suspended users - this and then next five rules
should be at the top of the filter list" disabled=no dst-port=16099 \
protocol=tcp
add action=jump chain=forward disabled=no jump-target=Suspended \
src-address-list=suspended
add action=accept chain=Suspended disabled=no dst-port=443 protocol=tcp
add action=accept chain=Suspended disabled=no \
dst-port=53 protocol=udp
add action=log chain=Suspended disabled=no dst-address-list=!PaymentGateway
limit=5/1m,10 log-prefix=""
add action=reject chain=Suspended disabled=no reject-with=\
icmp-admin-prohibited

/ip firewall nat
add action=redirect chain=dstnat comment="Redirect Nat Rule for suspend
users - put this rule at the top of the list " disabled=no dst-port=80 \
protocol=tcp src-address-list=suspended to-ports=16099

/ip proxy
set always-from-cache=no cache-administrator=webmaster cache-hit-dscp=4
cache-on-disk=no enabled=\
yes max-cache-size=none max-client-connections=600 max-fresh-time=3d
max-server-connections=\
600 parent-proxy=0.0.0.0 parent-proxy-port=0 port=16099
serialize-connections=no src-address=\
0.0.0.0
/ip proxy access
add action=allow disabled=no dst-host=mywebsite.com
add action=allow disabled=no dst-host=www.mywebsite.com
add action=deny disabled=no redirect-to=myportal.com src-address=\
x.x.x.x/24

Re: [AFMUG] mccowntech rack mount surge suppressor with Medusa

2018-03-26 Thread chuck
OK, so grounds are related to the problem.

There may be something unusual with timing pulses on the power that is causing
the surge suppressor to fire.
Forrest would know much more than I about that.

I honestly don’t know if anyone has tried my product with a Medusa before.
I have a 100% gas tube version that may solve the problem.

The issue is either noise to/from the ground.
  or
Transverse impulses getting clamped. Could be something about the new timing
stuff that I don’t understand.
Forrest is probably better versed in thinking about this than I am.

Perhaps the server got launched by Elon Musk and the time delay is just

[AFMUG] wbmfg APC Surge Suppressor with Cambium Medusa?

2018-03-26 Thread Sam Lambie
I sent a request to the list last week, but I think it got eaten but the
list monsters.
Last week, I installed a Cambium Medusa at one of my sites, replacing a 450
AP. I removed the APC surge suppressor and put in a gige HV model for the
Medusa. It fires up, pings for about 20 seconds and then the whole
SyncInjector looks like it shuts down. I get a 1 blink error code.
When I take the SS out of the equation, it works fine. The only thing that
I can think of is that the switch is a 2960 Cisco 10/100 and it can't
handle the auto negotiation?

Basic layout of Network back to Switch is this:
Medusa > Cat6 100' (Tested at 1gig) > WBMFG APC SS > Packet Flux Gig
SyncInjector powered by Traco DIN rail PSU > Data out to Cisco 2960.
Medusa is getting Sync from Sync Box Jr at Antenna location via Aux port
(UGPS power enabled)

Thanks!
Sam

[AFMUG] Does anyone Service the Greater Wilmington, NC area?

2018-03-26 Thread Nate Burke
A radio station engineer we've worked with for years is moving somewhere
around Wilmington, NC and was wondering what his WISP options are for
his house (which is not located yet), but most likely will be rural
probably 20-30 min away from Wilmington. This appears to be a somewhat
mountainous area, he is well familiar with how the RF Propagates and
will depend on where towers are at if he can get connection. Apparently
there is a 'Wisp Salon & Spa' in Wilmington, so Google is skewed with
those results.

Let me know if you're around there, and I'll send your info over to him.

Nate

2018-03-26 Thread Matt Hoppes

You're missing my point.

Support calls are maybe 2-4 a week.

But there are minimums with SP. Plus there are the calls that are
mis-directed that I would end up paying for, or "Is Matt there?".

BUT... by bringing my sales in-house ($300-$400/month) plus the support
(around the same amount) I'm now part way to just hiring someone -- who
I can now use for other things.

His point is that he doesn't have dedicated support staff, but staff that do
other things while not taking support calls. Your ServerPlus agents aren't
going to be unboxing radios or whatever when calls aren't coming in.

That said, I still prefer ServerPlus.

Large corporations I have worked for in the past have always put at least a
1.5x multiplier on employees. Many would do 2. I'm talking big companies
like Flour, Lucent, and Agilent. You can bet they have that stuff down. If
you think a $10/hr guy, for example, is only costing you $400/week, I think
you are in for a surprise.

Re: [AFMUG] Cambium LTE

2018-03-26 Thread Adam Moffett
You have a point there. LTE comes with a lot of baggage that nobody
wants. I don't want "LTE" specifically, I just want it to work with few
trees in the way.

I'm sure they thought of that and have their reasons.

I cant understand why Cambium opens up another additional platform. Why
not develop 450 line further implementing some physical layer goodies
of LTE. I've seen this step with Wimax/PMP320 and all know where this
ended up.

Once they implemented LTE stuff it is outdated as 5G is moving in.

Billions

Barry

Silicon Valley

Any others?

Of course Homeland.

And if like Homeland, you will probably also like The Looming Towers.

I read the book years ago.  Book was dry and academic.  The TV
show is pretty good.
