like SEE-Mish. So I'd say your spelling is a phonetic representation from
way back when.

I just checked my few really old photographs and found one, taken probably
around 1919, of my mother's family with my grandfather

church during Lent, from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday.
I think someone who had to marry was married in the rectory. The pastor was
Portuguese so that may have had something to do with the practice.
