Red headed woodpecker was calling by snackbar between area 1 and 2. Also had an
almost adult COMMON LOON. There were plenty of CASPIAN TERNS. There were many
COMMON TERNS too, one that had almost an entirely red bill. There was a small
touch of gray at the very tip but only from the right side
Went kayaking today through the Cayuga Inlet to the red lighthouse andthere
were 6 CASPIAN TERNS next to the lighthouse. They were all adults. I presume
they are non-breeders since it is a bit early for fall migration??

Had a chance to stop by Montezuma for a few hours on the way back from
Rochester around midday with my girl friend. Unfortunately, this is the
worst time for scoping because of heat shimmer. Wildlife drive has dried
out a lot. We were able to pick out
a distant breeding plumage DUNLIN and
I did a quick trip to Montezuma and vicinity today. Notable birds... wildlife
drive to the left of Larue's in the main pool there arelikely hundreds if not
more shorebirds all very distant. I was able to ID the following species...

Last night there was decent (for early spring) bird echoes on the radar. That's
2 days in a row now. We have had several new arrival species down here in the
Binghamton area as well. Eastern Phoebe, Bonaparte's Gulls, Tree Swallows, lots
of Rusty Blackbirds, yellow-rumped warblers all have

Got the TUFTED DUCK on my second trip to south end of Cayuga lake. Tried
and failed Wednesday. Anyway, bird was first seen by the buoy with Mark
Miller and then we lost it for a bit. It reappeared by the docks off rte 89
as seen from Hog Hole. There were plenty of scaup sp and REDHEAD flying
back
Counted 63 TUNDRA SWANS from Ladoga point. Also one CACKLING GOOSE. Nice
variety and numbers of aythya dabblers coots etc. good viewing conditions too!!

Dipped on Tufted Duck this morning from Hog Hole with terrible viewing

Went to K-M marsh this morning on Towpath Road (its really bad by the way).
I got there around 830 am and parked close to the dike and almost
immediately I got on the 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS found by Dave Wheeler the
night before. I was soon joined by fellow birders Bob McGuire and Dave

Since I was last at K-M Marsh on the 18th, the numbers and diversity of
shorebirds has increased. However, after reading Dave Nutter's email its
all relative. Birds that have increased markedly since the 18th are both
LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. There were a few large flocks and even a

Began on wildlife drive this afternoon (Friday) and came across a small
group of shorebirds in the canal on the right before Larue's. This is
typically the solitary sandpiper spot and indeed there
were 4 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS present with 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 1 SPOTTED
SANDPIPER in basic plumage and

southbound shorebirds present. or left over spring migrants? Had 5 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 2 PECTORAL SANSPIPERS. The birds are in and out of the weeds by

Gorgeous EURASIAN WIGEON in fall plumage with nice rufous head present with

Went with my birding pal Melissa Penta to Knox-Marcellus Marsh and viewed
from East Road. We arrived around 5 pm and stayed for a little over 2 hours.
The viewing conditions were good with little if any heat shimmer. Lighting of
course was very good. The mosquitoes however were brutal!

Finally got a chance to view K-M Marsh from East Rd in the evening. I was there

The weather was perfect, light breeze, no bugs, and comfortable temperatures.

Planned a trip to Montezuma days ago for today given that it would be the best
weather day and got lucky with the late report of the AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN last night.
So got up early and made it to East Road overlooking K-M Marsh Montezuma
before 9 am. I was literally seconds behind Jay and
I have noticed radar echoes blossoming some after sunset more so than the last
couple weeks.
At altitudes of about 3000 to 5000 feet AGL the echoes were moving from north
to south, below that;
the echoes are moving more west to east suggesting maybe some of these are
insects?? Or maybe
some are
White rumped.2 larues 1 main pool mudflats.

The weather today was not ideal for a major hawk movement but the winds were
light northerly (around 5-10 mph), and with full sun it was not that bad out

Northern gannet immature flew north and out of sight seen well from long
point. Also 2 long tailed ducks close. There was a major feeding frenzy of
gulls. Waited for some time but nothing unusual showed up. Gannet was long gone
by this time. Did have red breasted merganser with some common
We struck out on the evening grosbeaks but heard 1 red crossbill (not sure
which type). Single call note. Repeated often. Much slower than white winged .
Also heard at least one (probably more)white winged crossbills flyby with their
more mechanical like calls repeated rapidly.
