Morgan, I would say that this instructor is sort of right. Those four-spreader racing noodles are designed to have a main on...and that sail probably won't have a reef, even. The main does support the mast to a large extent. Those boats shouldn't be going out in strong offshore conditions.

The wheels on Peregrine ran on the bronze plate under the donut bushing you're showing. Over the years they had worn a slight dip in the plate, so I installed the bushing by propping up the rudder from beneath and removing the wheels and the bolt that holds them. All were in good condition on

I think the 36 will be fine if you set it up right. On my 40 I have a Tides Strongtrack, which allows me to haul the main up almost all the way before I have to resort to a winch. I sail with a number three on the furler, which is easy to roll up without having to use a winch and easy to tack
